Justine Damond

WHY?

Australian native Justine Ruszczyk Damond, 40, was shot and killed at 11:30 p.m. Saturday, July 15, while speaking to police officers who responded when she called 911 after witnessing an assault in the alley behind her Minneapolis home.

Officer Mohamed Noor allegedly fired his weapon from the passenger seat of the squad car, shooting through the driver’s side open window, striking Damond.

Justine was an experienced yoga instructor, personal health and life coach and meditation teacher who led classes at Lake Harriet Spiritual Community.

She was engaged to be married this month to Don Damond. The shooting sparked an international outcry for answers and renewed anger over senseless shootings by American police.

Who hasn’t seen this glorious picture of a beautiful young woman exuding confidence, joy, and a message about changing the world hidden in her eyes?

Well, she’s changed the world all right — just not in the way the rest of us wanted it to happen. On the night of July 15, Justine Ruszczyk Damond was shot and killed by a policeman. She had called the police to see about an altercation in the alley behind her home. Instead of helping, she was killed. Justine was set to be married in three weeks. In fact, she took his name early in anticipation of the event. Don Damond has been a friend of ours for 20+ years. When Justine came into the picture a few years ago, it was as though she had always been at his side. They were together — at last. She gave up her life in Australia for love — it was something she would do. Getting to know Justine wasn’t hard.

After the first five seconds, she was your friend. From then on, she’d refer to you as “lovey,” “dearest darling,” “precious one.”

She was, well, pure love. Yet grounded in her wisdom. Ridiculously funny. Yet serious in her concerns for everyone, for animals, for the planet. Justine and I had a cat connection. I would take care of their cat (Miss Kitty) when they were traveling.

In turn, she offered energetic insights about our cat Bodhi as she was about to make her transition to “kitty heaven” — insights that have stayed with me two years later. The question on all our minds is why would someone destroy such a light being? Couldn’t he see that light? Couldn’t he see her vulnerability as she stood in her pajamas? Her need to reach out and help? We are all asking that question as we hold and support her was-to-be husband Don. Let us hope we can get to a place of forgiveness and have an open heart. It’s what Justine would have wanted.

Justine was a loved and respected member of the Lake Harriet Spiritual Community in Minneapolis. She was a gifted speaker, meditation leader, teacher and transformation coach. Her message is of love and peace and non-violence. She inspired us by the example of how she chose to live her life. Justine was dedicated to helping others make transformations in their lives, through teaching and coaching.

She was an amazing leader for bridging the gap between science and spirituality in a way that was easy to understand and fun. She had a great joy for spiritual growth that inspired those around her. Much of her work is based on the work of Dr. Joe Dispenza, a national cutting edge leader of science and spirituality. Originally a veterinary surgeon, she had a deep love for animals and volunteered at Second Hand Hounds. While this is a tragic event, Justine would want us to use this opportunity to develop greater love and compassion for each other, and look to find solutions

by thinking differently. We ask that you respect the Damond and Ruszczyk families while we all grieve and try to make sense of this tragic event. We choose to remember her as the love and light that she is.

Civility & Decency Hallmarks of personal & social cultivation

I

t takes little effort to notice the frequency of low-level behaviors demonstrated individually and societally these days. Regardless of whether they stem from matters of politics, social decorum, religion, gender, race or innumerable kindred topics, they all get rendered into a kind of perverse fuel that is disseminated through sensationalistic social media and press outlets. These, in turn, become converted to equally toxic reactive outrage.

In fact, one can’t turn on a computer or read a news site without being inundated by an appalling glut of boorish anecdotes, deviant crimes or sad demonstrations of humankind’s capacity for inhumanity — topics subsequently regurgitated by anyone boasting an opinion and means to express it.

We’re almost conditioned to seek evidence of social and global improvement yet, upon finding so little, bemoan its lack and await the string of inflammatory responses sure to follow. Such behaviors, rather than being corrective or solutionoriented, merely promote cyclic patterns of negativity that generate further corrosive practices and incendiary attitudes.

Leading by example Lamentably, the concept of leading by example appears to be losing valuable traction. Many fail to recognize how their actions impact others or, if they do grasp this, they don’t care what kind of activities they put forward.

People manifest base attributes when they suffer from cause-effect blindness, ethical ignorance, or when those wielding social influence fail to exhibit common courtesy or basic decency. Standards for such seem to lack relevance and are wistfully mourned by those yearning for more civilized times.

This engenders an almost rhetorical question: Why teach children self-control or rules of respectful engagement when adults in all strata of society increasingly fail to evince those qualities themselves?

We’ve become afflicted by a dearth of highminded deportment and substituted it with quasi neo-apocalyptic, Mad Max modes of violent expression.

Devolution, not evolution appears to be the trend.

Why? In part because our current president acts like a bad grade-school child.

But his actions find significant resonance because mean-spirited, regressive attitudes are quick-fix, fear-based responses to the complexities that arise from an emerging global society. The challenges evoked by shifting populations and cultural diversity have rocked the foundation of previously familiar nationalistic stability — and not just in the U.S.A. Multiple countries are pressed to address the repercussion of technological, environmental and social changes.

The world is in flux — and people either expand to embrace it wisely or contract to contain it in a death throe. The truth is, however, this process can’t be denied. We are not going backwards.

Empowered to create No one person can stop wide-spread negativism by themselves; fortunately, everyone can do so individually and collectively.

How? By being willing to behave correctly and doing so as often as possible. What does this entail? It means recognizing that each of us is empowered to create.

What we do, say and think does impact us and the world around us. We must be mindful, then, of our power and how to exercise it. The equation is not complicated: If you want a better society or world, then act, speak and think in ways that beget harmony and uplifting benefit. Not doing so elicits the unenviable opposite.

Sadly, we often fail to see how we unconsciously create the very things we wish to avoid. For instance, when we strive for peace angrily, or when we seek social equity

through blame and shame, we foster the very adversity we sought to eradicate. Therefore, we must exercise the universal precepts of doing no harm, being kind, and treating others as we’d wish to be treated. Sounds simplistic, but confronting base instincts is seldom easy.

Doing as suggested doesn’t require anything sophisticated. It can be done simply by shifting how you interact with others. If you aren’t doing so already, learn to pay attention, be kind, exercise courtesy, and engage thoughtfully. In other words, be respectful. Replace autopilot mode with sympathetic listening and amiable interchange. Develop the ability to commune with others, not just communicate.

This can change the world one person at a time.

Consider this: Listening is more than just hearing words. It requires understanding — tuning in to the tones, expressions, thoughts or feelings that exist behind words. These must be weighed to grasp the full picture of what’s going on. Next, respond after considering how your thoughts, speech or actions could be delivered and what their impact might be. Strive to speak when the time is right; act from a place of truthful benevolence.

If this seems too unwieldy, just be kind — doing only that which won’t harm others or oneself. Like any skill, this becomes easier with practice and the results are so worthwhile.

EMBRACING UNITY Personal and cultural development have many features but, at their core, require embracing unity. We’re all in this together.

Literally. There is no escaping the actuality that everyone, consciously or not, contributes to how the world is shaped. Again, if you wish to see a better society or planet, behave properly wherever you are. Refuse the influence of those who spread ignorance and defile virtue.

Be a light in the world — even if it’s just a tiny corner. Model civility, demonstrate decency. Be polite, be kind, be thoughtful, be courteous, have manners. We each have the obligation to be mindful stewards of our lives, as well as the planet. Since the divine dwells in all, your honorable behavior not only elevates yourself, but it makes this world a finer place to live in and, subsequently, serves The Creator favorably. a

Spiritual Intimacy: What you really want from a mate

hen two people resonate at the same frequency, it does not matter what they do. It feels good, and it is fun. In this relationship, the couple is more interested in the vibration of God than their problems. Problems become opportunities. They rise above the system of obstacles. There is a feeling of cherishing going on.

They are a cheerleader for each other’s evolution.

The frequency of chemistry can truly be felt when one is combining the wonderful energies of sexuality and friendship with the desire to use healing energy toward each other. In this combined frequency, the couple can heal each other; whereas in the old paradigm, couples could destroy each other.

A couple should cultivate their capacity to enjoy. There needs to be the intention of feeling good. Keep asking: • Are we ascending the ladder of holiness or are we descending?

• Is what we are doing lifeenhancing or life-depreciating?

are going to be feeling bad. If what you are doing is ascending the ladder of holiness and is life-enhancing, you are going to be feeling good.

Relationships viewed from the soul level (holy relationships) are very different from those viewed at the personality level (unholy relationships). A relationship that is soulmated has a lot of passion naturally.

One that is not soul mated may be lacking in passion, so that couple might create a lot of drama to get a rush. How will you ever get out of your karma that way? Your karma can bury you.

We must appreciate our intimate relationship because it inspires our heart to open and at the same time brings up our patterns left to be healed. An intimate relationship draws us out of ourselves. It can help us bring forth our finest qualities.

t the heart of Leo season, it’s time to express our heart’s bounty and express ourselves in our full glory. Summer romances, music festivals, and braggadocio abound as the Sun and Mars run conjunct in Leo for the first three weeks of August, turning up the amplifier on all expression.

This month brings a lunar eclipse on the August 7 Full Moon at 15° of Aquarius, and an unusual visible complete solar eclipse on the August 21 New Moon at 28° of Leo. Eclipses occur when the sun, moon and Earth all line up exactly, creating a focused energy, like an acupuncture point. If we have been avoiding a truth, or ripening some fresh understanding, but have not yet manifest the decision, or if we have been holding on to some illusion tenaciously, we might be surprised. Like ripened fruit that falls from the tree, eclipses precipitate action that is long overdue, whether we like it or not.

uring a prolonged potentially fatal illness, I lost 35 pounds and 50 percent of my energy. My legs were getting weaker each time I walked. I felt like I was on that slippery slope nearing the end of my life, wondering, “What

Simple, Cool Treats for the Summer Heat Food First

ooking for some cool treats as the summer heats up? Look no further than these two simple recipes that are easy for anyone to make! The Cherry Vanilla Sorbet is a fruity, non-dairy treat and the Nutty Banana Bites are great to have on hand when you just want a little bite of something sweet to eat.

Bananas have a number of great health benefits! High in potassium and low in salt, bananas are officially recognized by the FDA as being able to lower blood pressure and protect against heart attack and stroke. They are high in iron and help strengthen blood and alleviate anemia. They aid in digestion, help protect against muscle cramps and help overcome depression due to high levels of tryptophan, which is converted into serotonin — the happy-mood brain neurotransmitter. Here are a couple easy sweet treats made with frozen bananas!

CHERRY VANILLA SORBET 3 frozen and peeled bananas 1 cup fresh or frozen sweet cherries, thawed 1/2 tsp vanilla extract or vanilla powder

1/4 cup unsweetened almond or coconut milk Put all ingredients in blender.

Blend low and then switch to high, pushing ingredients down if necessary. Blend 30-50 seconds to keep sorbet texture. Do not overmix as it will liquefy and melt.

Scoop into individual ramekins and garnish with fresh fruit, nuts or chocolate shavings. Serves 4.

Have fun making different flavors by using a variety of berries. This is a wonderful, non-dairy alternative to ease those ice cream cravings!

The Way of the Heart A Pleiadian Message

eloved ones, we greet you. During this month of August, your planet Earth will reach a destiny meeting point within an expanded multidimensional setting within your resident Universe. This will take place at a specific coordinate of time within your reality base.

There will be an activation set in motion, like a wave flowing across the planet creating this monumental birthing process. Ripples from this wave are going to infiltrate the entire consciousness of those of you who are aligned to your hearts. The frequency of light from this flow will impact and shift the entire energetic settings of your planet on another level, moving you into a different dimensional reality potential.

This activation is designed as a rebirthing process, opening up further adjustments by aligning you to another step beyond the 3rd dimensional illusion, and enabling your planet to be repositioned, energetically aligning you to a higher level of conscious communion within the Universe. Within the wave of this energetic flowing frequency, a pulse is opening up, giving access to a deeper communion. A new patterning of consciousness will arise because of these frequency openings, and this patterning will flow throughout the planet and align within the consciousness of the heart. These patterns will ultimately interact through all the multidimensional layers and aspects of the energetic field and cells of your physical body.

These frequency flows will create realignments that will naturally awaken your own conscious “knowing” on a deeper level. You will be repositioned to connect with your own unique, multidimensional potential of the sacred Self. It is essential to understand at this juncture that this process is simply a reconnection. natural realignment to that part of you that is awaiting you just beyond the veil.

This sacred part of you already exists, fully intact.

YOU ARE WHO YOU HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR Through the action of this profound frequency shift on your planet, your ability to align back to the sacred of Self is fully accessible. The new patterning is designed to deeply penetrate the psyche and consciousness of mankind. This time heralds in the realignment, the waking up to the higher potential of humanity through this flow of light frequency. Each one of you who is on the path will be able to consciously choose the action of Truth, which is your reconnection to the sacred.

As your sacred nature becomes naturally accessible, you are enabled to begin to consciously utilize the higher source of your Self. Part of the design for this time in this second phase on the planet is for you to individually begin a new journey of relationship with the human aspect of your self. The sacred part of Self can begin to hold the human part of your self with love and compassion. You can consciously bring to a close the internal separation that you have created by participating in the illusion. Up to this point you have been actively engaging in the process of selfjudgment of your human journey on Earth.

This time of our transition is about opening into the action of letting go of elements that have contributed to this separation. This action of love allows the human part of your self to be able to transform through receiving the Truth of your journey, through the love from your Higher Self. This love will allow a maturing of your human aspect. You will begin to move into a state of deeper understanding of your full journey as a learning experience in this lifetime. This natural process of healing, an unfolding of self-acceptance, will open up a new doorway of potential of you being able to let go of the past. There can be rest in this clarity, and a sense of being nutritionally fed on the love of the Higher Self. As the self-judgment is released and the internal separation comes to an end, there is liberation.

FREQUENCY OF TRUTH This frequency of Truth will allow a new focus to open up within your senses. This will enable you to suddenly understand this new perception of Self within your environment so that your experiences in your day-to-day life will begin to flourish, as your human element is able to let go.

25 Years on the Edge Grass Roots with a Marketing Plan A Conversation on the Founding of The Edge with Gary Beckman

I

n the 1970s and ’80s, Gary Beckman sold revolutionizing devices called the calculator, the cassette tape recorder, videocassette recorders, and the personal computer. By the time I met him, he was beyond selling devices. He was three years into promoting a communications tool. He was hungry. He knew his product was on the cutting edge and he wanted the world — well, at least the Upper Midwest — to know about The Edge.

But what inspired The Edge into manifestation? Perhaps it was meditation. Perhaps it was intuition. Perhaps it was the Harmonic Convergence.

“I remember going out into the field one morning with about 40 people,” Beckman said. “We were all like children out there. This was an interesting group. There were many self-employed people, practitioners, even a few lawyers, a couple teachers, some carpenters, guys like me, marketing guys.

It was one of the most spiritual things that I had ever felt or known in my life.”

I spoke with Gary Beckman about the creation of this publication and his experience as one of the leading change agents in the field.

What was your introduction to the spiritual community?

I was in the electronics business and, synchronistically, I got hooked into the Maharishi. The first wave of Transcendental Meditation (TM) started on the West Coast and it went all the way to the East Coast. Then it came to a big hall at the University of Minnesota and I joined a lot of other people in

taking up TM. That’s what introduced me to the spiritual community.

I had finally walked away from the computer business and was looking to find something else to do. I didn’t want a job. I wanted something to do that would make me a little bit of money and really have an effect on the population in the United States.

An interesting thing is that as I got into meditation, I found out that this was part of my agreement when I came to Earth — that I would do something to help introduce holistic living, meditation, the different healing modalities to people.

I also got into the mystery schools in the Blue Ridge Mountains.

Is that when the idea for The Edge developed?

Yes. One of the ladies at that mystery school came to visit me and she said, “You know, let’s pick up a New Age magazine.”

And, I went, “Oh, yeah?”

We looked. I called a couple of women I knew who were involved in the movement, but such a magazine did not exist. One had started, but it folded within a very short period of time.

That was a big, critical time when the woman I met suggested that I start a publication. I had never been around newspapers, so I figured I had to find an editor.

My capabilities were not there. So I turned to Lynn LaFroth, a woman I met when I was selling computers.

Then I found other people to round out the publication. Melissa May was very important, because this was before the days of digital and she was good at cutting and pasting the magazine into form.  see GRASS ROOTS on p. 22

Back in the last century, hope for global consciousness flowed through our thoughts and actions, not despair over the politics of meanness and greed. We felt there was so much momentum forward and upward.

Gary Beckman and I were studying with a master in a mystery school and Gary was inspired to create The Edge.

Knowing I was writing, he asked me to be a contributing writer. Thus began a many year time of interviewing the greatest minds in the world and offering those interviews through The Edge. My own growth was boosted, and we all were enriched. Since then, life has happened in big ways.

Divorce, remarriage. Death of my mother. Quit working at the large clinic I cofounded. Originated and ran a charity for Russian orphans for 10 years. Cancer just about won in a four-year tussle, but I survived to go on to work as an emergency room physician. Sold my precious home and land in Minnesota, waved a tearless goodbye to ticks and mosquitoes, moved to my stunning land and home in Washington state. Working in the ER here at age 72 — I just cut back to 10 twelve-hour shifts a month. Wrote a book in 2011 — Football Wife: Coming of Age With the NFL — about my first marriage to Minnesota Viking Karl Kassulke. Just published some of my poetry in a new book — In the Words of Olympic Peninsula Authors. Now playing with acrylics. I always wanted to do art, but I cannot draw.

Birthing The Edge

25 Years on the Edge talked about “what next” in those days. His work as vendor was ending, as well. He asked me if I wanted to do this with him and I was scared to death. I didn’t get back to him for a month as I processed facing my dream. From then on, it was all systems go.

used to work as the communications man-ager for the State of Minnesota’s Department of Human Services — for a project that was computerizing the welfare/Medicaid system. My role was to make palatable the change from paper to computer for all social service workers throughout the state: To keep them informed about what the change meant, what was involved, reduce fear, etc.

I produced a variety of newsletters, fact sheets, etc.

The wellness and spirituality community was nascent in the Twin Cities — just on the cusp of burgeoning in 1992. There were pockets here and there, but it seemed a little “sleepy” or maybe it was just keeping itself low profile. Gary Beckman and I founded The Edge with the thought it would be a metaphysical newspaper that was cutting edge, hence the name. We envisioned bringing spirituality into the mainstream where it wasn’t talked about in hush-hush tones. My sister, Dee, owned a holistic store in Stillwater that offered many healing services, metaphysical/spiritual products and classes — and this was my foot into the holistic community. The Edge got its advertising start with many of her vendors and clients.

I remember it was early June 1992 and Gary and I sat at The Dock cafe on the St. Croix River in Stillwater with the intent of finding the right name for the publication. We tossed around many names, and finally Gary zeroed in on the right fit: The Edge. From there, we asked Diane James, an astrologist, to chart the most advantageous time for its “birth,” when we would register the company with the State of Minnesota.

She did the chart and June 9, 1992, at 3:40 p.m. Central was The Edge’s birthdate. Obviously she was right on, because this has been a long-lived publication that seems to have weathered many ups and downs and has been flexible enough to meet the changing times.

LAUNCH OF THE EDGE IN 1992: Obviously there was some backlash with this “new” metaphysical publication, considered by some “the work of the devil.” But my work at the State of Minnesota led me to understand how change affects everyone and how to keep folks informed and educated to assuage fears; this helped me to deal with what was going on. Change is frightening— and also exciting. Gary and I had thick skins as we moved forward into an avant garde area of publication for this area. We were innovators at the time.

Pioneers must cut through dense thought and irrational fears to make it through to the other side. We did that. We are both very tough.

WORKING WITH GARY: Gary Beckman was a vendor who sold personal computers to the state for the project I was working on.

A friend at work introduced us because we shared the same bent toward all things spiritual. As the project wound down after many years, Gary approached me about starting a newspaper on spirituality. He knew this was a dream of mine, as we had

CREATING THE EDGE: The roles as co-founders were clearly divided. Gary was the penultimate salesperson and I was the writer, editor and designer of the publication. We also shared a good amount of marketing savvy, which served us in the early days in getting the newspaper known and established in the community. I was fairly new to PageMaker at that time, but I slapped it out as best I could. I was trained in journalism so writing and editing was my forte. It was exciting to see each issue come out, watch the company expand, and find out we had a loyal audience and advertiser base. Looking back now, I’m aghast that the first issue’s design was so poor, but people still supported us. We ultimately hired a couple of designers — Doug Bronson and Melissa May — who shaped The Edge into a more professional look. I was thrilled with the look and feel of the “new” Edge when Tim Miejan came on board in 1996 as the editor and designer. It was all fabulous — good articles, clean design.

Suzie Black and Michele Mayama were on the cutting edge of experiential spiritual practices, helping our audience to find a way to deepen their access to hidden worlds and depths within themselves. Their very popular lectures and gatherings seeded what is happening in the metaphysical/ spiritual community in the Twin Cities today.

INTENTION IN CREATING EACH ISSUE: Each issue was theme or topic-based. Each article (except for the monthly columns) was devoted to the topic of the month — always related to some aspect of spirituality or holistic health. These topics were sometimes very new and cutting edge in the Upper Midwest.

ON BIRTHING THE EDGE: The Edge was an expression of what I had studied, experienced and had a passion for since I was a teenager. I believed our society was on the cusp of a spiritual/cultural evolution in consciousness and I wanted to bring those ideas to a wider audience. We can now see we are in the midst of this foreseen change and, as uncomfortable as it is, it was on the horizon for many decades (or more).

I do believe I am a change agent in so far as I helped share information and education by publishing many writers and practitioners who were doing the work to assist in the birth of a new consciousness. I love that the current Edge continues with this work.

CREATION OF TWIN CITIES WELLNESS, NOW ESSENTIAL WELLNESS: As I evolved in my studies and in my work in the healing and spirituality community in the Twin Cities, I could see we were on the cusp — riding the wave of a huge explosion in the field of natural healing or complementary, alternative medicine. Gary and I had differences about the vision of our newspaper.

I wanted to evolve more towards the new healing methods and mega-changes in medicine and publish articles about that.

Gary believed we needed to stay focused on metaphysics and spirituality. You can see there was a market for both as our tandem newspapers grew in size from 1995 through the next decade or so. Proud to be on the Edge

hen I decided to open a metaphysical store, I did not know that The Edge existed until Gary and Insiah Beckman stopped by to check out the store.

I was so excited to discover that there was an entire community of like-minded people who were interested in healing and growing from within.

As soon as I began to advertise, I was introduced to so many incredible people in the community who also came to visit the store, and that was the beginning of a new journey for me. Later that year we became the bookstore at the first Edge Life Expo, and that was another wonderful experience. In just a few days, I met so many people who would come to impact my life for years to come.

One day Gary stopped by the store with a stack of papers in hand and asked me if I could help sell ads because his regular person was ill. I had some extra time, so I was happy to do it.

Again, more great people came across my path. I decided to work for The Edge part time and then, eventually, full time as a sales manager of the magazine and the expos. In December 2008 when the economy had taken a downturn and many magazines like ours were closing their doors, the announcement was made that The Edge would follow suit.

It somehow just didn’t feel right to me that The Edge magazine would come to an end, since it led so many people to the connections and healing that they needed, similar to my own experience Tim Miejan and I decided that perhaps we could be the ones to keep it alive, so by January 2009 Tim and I formed a business partnership and he and I did what we both always did best — Tim as the editor and me managing the sales/business side, plus a few more hats we had to wear!

We are very proud to be in this community in 2017, still able to provide this resource to everyone who needs it. Living on the Edge

by Tim Miejan It was 1994 and I had just purchased my first personal computer. I subscribed to America Online and paid outrageously high hourly fees to chat about spirituality and healing with strangers from across the country. Some of these people became friends. One became my wife.

At some point I realized that the same woman was in both my A Course in Miracles and Reiki chatrooms. Personal chats became long phone calls, and before long I found myself taking my first drive up Interstate 35 from Northwest Missouri to the Twin Cities.

I met Rachel and her 6-year-old son Kyle and the three of us spent a weekend exploring the area. Kyle always rode shotgun, and my earliest memory of him was as a passenger sitting behind him. He raised his arms and asked, “Can you help me, mister?” and I stretched my arms around him from behind and tickled him. Rachel served as tour guide, driving us from her Woodbury townhome to Afton, and then we followed the St. Croix Trail north all the way up to Taylors Falls, where I fell in love with Minnesota’s beauty.

The next day we explored St. Paul, visiting Mississippi Market at its former location at Randolph and Fairview. It was there that I picked up a copy of The Edge. Little did I know then that it was my destiny to take that Edge newspaper home with me. By that summer, I had decided to move to Minnesota, and that meant I had to look for work in the Twin Cities. As an experienced journalist, I mailed my resumé to three publications: the Star Tribune (received a rejection letter), the Pioneer Press (received no response) — and, due to my growing interest in spirituality, The Edge.

Two days after mailing my resumés, I received a call from The Edge’s publisher, Gary Beckman, who said his editor was leaving and did I want to talk to him about the position. I said yes. I hopped in my car without checking the weather forecast and was stalled for several hours in a blizzard north of Des Moines. After arriving in Woodbury around 4 a.m., I asked Rachel to call Gary in the morning to delay our meeting. About 11 a.m., still tired from the wintery drive, I met with Gary at his Coon Rapids home and got the job. And then I asked Rachel to marry me.

I moved to Minnesota in October 1995 (during another snowstorm) and my first work with The Edge involved looking over the final edition edited by Lynn LaFroth before it went to press. I was charged with taking over the helm as editor at the start of The Edge’s fourth year of publication.

FAST FORWARD As hard as it is to believe, The Edge is 25 years old this month. Already mature in magazine years, this publication has seen a lot in its 298 months of life. In the early days before email, contributors mailed in articles that needed to be typed, and faxes came in to me at all hours of the night. The publication’s cover, once only one color, became full color. Its size nearly doubled when we introduced the biannual Edge Directory. The original folded, tabloid-size newspaper in two sections transformed into an easierto-read stapled magazine. Its companion website became home to many articles we no longer had room to print.

The great change occurred in 2008 when print publications nationally began losing advertising revenue due to the growing footprint of the Internet. Some, like The Rake magazine in the Twin Cities, stopped printing and became digital editions. Others quit altogether. This is when Gary Beckman decided to sell The Edge to me and his lead sales person, Cathy Jacobsen, while continuing to produce Edge Life Expos & Events.

QUANTUM LEAPS In its life span, The Edge has witnessed the mainstreaming of complementary medicine. Integrative practices like acupuncture, homeopathy, hands-on healing and other natural therapies are now offered routinely to patients in local hospitals. Massage centers can be found in strip malls nationwide.

So, too, has The Edge seen a vast shift in how the public responds to spiritual practices. Mindfulness and meditation have become accepted ways to find personal harmony. Every other Sunday I join my wife, my mom and my two sisters in using colored pencils to personalize mandalas and nature scenes while listening to soothing, hummable songs from Iceland.

And quantum understanding continues to come to the fore through healers, teachers

There comes a time in a person’s life when they begin their journey of spiritual awakening, whether in this life or another. For me, that time came about 25 years ago, around the time The Edge was first published. The Edge was, and continues to be, an important, invaluable resource for me in my growing, healing and awakening journey. It was as if each 1 8 w w w. e d g e m a g a z i n e . n e t

and transformation agents. What was groundbreaking in 1992 is now the foundational bedrock for experiential processes in 2017. Light years seem to separate what we knew then and are coming to grips with now.

Study groups that once gathered to listen to the wisdom of angels now hear guidance by cosmic communities of beings who tell us to be in our hearts as we navigate these turbulent waves of change.

Throughout these past 25 years, The Edge has been here to share with you perspectives and insights offered by those who are leading us back to ourselves.

KEEP IT LOCAL Perhaps the greatest change in the past 25 years of publication has been the ebb and flow of local people who offers tools, practices and products to assist us in living holistically.

With its birth, The Edge gave businesses like Present Moment Herbs & Books, Tao Natural Foods, The Meditation Center and dozens of other small businesses a new, exciting way to be seen by people who embrace what they have to offer. Now, 25 years later, The Edge continues to do the same thing for those and other businesses who find it hard being noticed in a world in which googling is how people find what they are looking for.

The Edge has stayed vital much longer than the average life span of periodicals, in spite of the dire economics affecting all print publications. That is because of the support — and vibrancy — of the holistic community of the Upper Midwest, a group of people who are as dedicated to finding balance, exploring new ways of thinking and being, and staying grounded as anyone, anywhere.

I want to thank all those who helped sell and design this publication over the years. I thank all of our wonderful article contributors. I thank you, the reader, for turning to The Edge for inspiration and education — and I thank you, the holistic business owner or practitioner, for being in relationship with The Edge to communicate with your community. — Maria Lisa Polegatto, Nova Scotia, Canada I am delighted to tell others my deep gratitude for The Edge magazine. The work/ service I have been doing in the last five years — Kundalini Awakening System and Kundalini Radiance — as well as all aspects of my life are the result of the following.

In the summer of 2011 I first heard the word “Kundalini.”

I had no idea what it was. Late summer I picked up an Edge magazine and saw an article

on service, written by a man named Chrism. The article talked about Kundalini, and in the opposite page there was an ad for the showing of the Kundalini film in Dinkytown.

The ad also mentioned a coming seminar in September 2011. I attended the film; neither it nor the article itself presented anything compelling about Kundalini. I listened and considered doing the seminar, as a seeker of knowledge. I had no idea the impact that would have on me. In a Kundalini seminar one is given the option of receiving a Shaktipat, which I chose, and that was the beginning of my activation, a process that leads to

Kundalini Awakening. After the seminar, I stayed connected to the seminar leader, and my process continued deepening.

I learned that Kundalini is the 10,000-year-old word for the divine presence within us, coiled up in our tailbone, waiting for the right time to emerge and take us to the next evolutionary level. This is our birthright, and when this awakening happens we receive spiritual gifts from our creator, i.e. expressing the presence of the divine in its creation. I stayed connected to the teacher and in 2013 asked him to return and do another seminar. We have since had Kundalini Awakening Seminars in September 2014, February and November 2015, and July 2016. Our next is in October 2017 in Mankato. This has become my life service, and my life continues to deepen in the presence and impact of Kundalini within me.

I am eternally grateful for all I receive, for the Kundalini community in the Twin Cities that exists through these five seminars, for Chrism’s writings that continue to be published in The Edge magazine, and for people who continue to read them and find their way to a Kundalini seminar. Why, for instance, are you given knowledge of a death without benefit of a telegram or the usual phone call? “Accelerated logic” is how Professor S. McNeel defines intuition. An illustrated magazine is sent to emergency rooms nationally with the request, “Can you ID this unidentified person” when there are no loved ones. Diane Arbus photographed unidentified people bearing toe tags in a New York City morgue. Anonymous persons and indigents are rotated among mortuaries. Cemeteries used to be benevolent societies, and burials were funded by societies. Thomas Lynch, funeral director and author, cites some basic questions: How did we come to be who we are, where do we come from, where are we going to and where’s home? Tarot and horoscope try to answer, but I asked my attorney friend for advice. He said, “Try The Edge.”

and experience of remembering your sacred expression of Self, while simultaneously allowing an emerging of both aspects, your sacred Self and humanness, to work in unison.

Through this realignment within this expanded multidimensional realm that will be entering the planet, your perception will be further shifted through the repositioning of your consciousness.

Your DNA strands will continue to be realigned and you will be able to access a different perception of Truth through your heart, allowing you to further open into the multidimensional aspect of Self. This is the plan for your unfolding. You will move step-by-step, as you are ready.

There have been many misperceptions and misunderstandings regarding who you are in reality. Know that beyond the veil you are already fully complete within your sacred multidimensional Self. You are already fully self-realized.

There is nothing that you have to change within your “perfectly imperfect” human aspect to reconnect to the sacred aspect of Self. This is important for you to understand now, because it allows you to be able to move forward without hesitation.

You can move forward and consciously choose realignment and reconnect to that aspect to the sacred Self, that you are. This process is accessed through “the way of the heart.”

COME HOME Through your heart, you come home to Self. This is an undeniable Truth. You are being called right now to come home. Through the new frequency design that is about to enter your Earth plane, the doorway of your heart will be fully accessible like never before. The pathway home has always been accessible through your heart. There are no complex steps. There is no mystery. Your heart has always been your tool for reconnection to Self.

Your heart is a natural receiving station for reconnection to Self. However it does require you to consciously choose the path of your heart.

The simple step of conscious choice is a powerful moment of creation being set in motion. Through your activation, there is a frequency change in your heart’s pathway.

Let’s look at the energetic shifts that will take place on a multidimensional level as you bring your conscious choice action towards your heart/ home space. The cells of your heart begin to activate and open on a different frequency. They begin to pulse this higher frequency as you bring your intention forward to this realignment to Home. You begin to activate a powerful process of creation through this simple step of bringing your intention and focus forward into your heart.

You are naturally a powerful creative being. And when you bring your conscious energy forward into a focused point within your heart, you set in motion a huge wave of energetic creation light within your heart cells. action of reconnection towards home.

Your choice to utilize this opportunity of reconnection to Self through your own desire of your heart sets off this next phase of your reawakening process. This is what we refer to as a self-realization moment.

This is your time to build a series of self-realization moments towards your own awakening. The new energetic framework that will be anchoring on the planet this month has been designed to bring you to the place to be able to utilize this destiny moment towards self-realization. You have always been destined to set in motion your own self-resurrection process.

I see in my work that people really want spiritual intimacy. I see the joy in couples who are sharing that and communicating about that.

Every relationship is a spiritual training course. Ask yourself these questions: • Are you both choosing to be in gratitude, praise and generosity?

• Are you regarding any situation that comes up as your teacher?

• Are you helping each other wake up and become all that you can be?

• Are you consecrating your lives to something sacred and holy?

• Are you creating heaven wherever you are?

• Are you in tune with the frequency of the most high?

• Are you constantly putting yourselves in situations that evoke your higher nature rather than lower nature?

• Is your life together as a couple a shining example of what is possible?

• Are you here to deliver God’s vibes (vibrations)?

• Does the Christ presence within you commune with the Christ presence of your mate?

• Are you practicing unconditional love?

Unconditional love does not mean that you do not have to tolerate everything a partner does, but you don’t stop loving them even if there is something you don’t like. Conditional love is when you love them because they are fitting your personal needs, and if they don’t do that, you stop loving them.

When you experience unconditional love, your DNA actually gets more orderly.

There is a powerful intercellular resonance that takes place. There is a magic that can arise when two highly evolved beings begin to work together; there can be a strong electric current that flows between them and from them, especially when they are on the path of ascension.

THE FIFTH DIMENSION Ascension means raising your vibration and level of light. It is rising to a higher level or degree. It is a momentum, a gradual shift initiated by you. Ultimately, it is the transcendence of the third dimensional conscious awareness. It is a process completed with the merging of the physical body with the higher dimensional body, i.e., the Christ body — the light body.

The third dimension is about polarity, competition, containment, restriction, territorialism, thinking inside the box (or thinking within what someone else considers safe and established parameters), shunning responsibility.

The fourth dimension is about time, infinity, endless possibility, trying this and that, healing the wounds of the third dimension, new modalities, becoming what you think is needed, and self-love (but still conditional); however, it still lacks integrity and the answers are not there.

The fifth dimension is where you want to go with your relationship and yourself. It is about total integrity, understanding, living true, unity, unconditional love, respect, doing exactly what you say, easy rapport, perfect health, turning up the light, and miracle consciousness!

Ascension to the fifth dimension requires a great deal of prior purification and preparation. Ascending happens through feeling (the feminine approach); it happens by extending love, praise and gratitude to God and all life forms. As cells are filled with light and love, our consciousness rises to a higher degree. One is no longer controlled by the past. Make ascension attitudes a moment-to-moment habit and a way of life. The closer we are to the Source, the more responsive we are.

Path of ascension In reality, all of humanity is on the path of ascension as evolution carries us onward and upward, but there is a vast difference between those who are consciously on the path and those who are not. Those who are

conscious are functioning at a different and greater frequency. God realization is their reason for being. One becomes permeated with love, devotion, gentleness, compassion and joy! I feel that ascension is the ultimate goal of spiritual growth. Imagine your mate as your ascension buddy!

Most people are holding on to old hurts or the past rather than ascending.

But if your mate is your ascension buddy, he or she will help you let go of what is holding you back. I assure you, it is a lot more wonderful to have contact with the ascended masters than it is to block that relationship. You and your mate have to be willing to commit to changing any belief structure or situation that gets in the way of your growth or evolution.

The problem you have to face is that your ego will divert you with all kinds of problems to distract you. At the same time, things you have been attracted to may seem different to you. They may seem a bit heavy and difficult to maintain. Upon ascension, you may even start to change in your physical experience regarding what you eat and drink and so on.

The first priority of ascension is to be of service. You will be able to do more and transmit a lot more love on this path. You will be given more and more opportunities to serve. There is a lot of delight, and you can have a very enjoyable experience. Each will have their own unique experience.

Once your frequency stabilizes at the higher levels, you will have conscious awareness of a new level of understanding.

The Bible says that “Ye who are grateful for all things, your body shall be filled with light and ye shall comprehend all things.”

You can actually get off the wheel of rebirth and serve the masters at the highest level. Your goal is to become a spiritual master yourself. When you are on that path, you can manifest things more quickly. Ask your guides for help. Start now by living in a state of responsibility.

have I allowed it into my life? What is the lesson for me? Then do something about it. Whatever happens, you start playing with it and see how you can use what you learn from it to serve others. The response to everything is acceptance, compassion, and unconditional love.”

With spiritual intimacy, personal growth takes precedence, and the couples tend to live in solution consciousness. Solutions restore peace, and that is always a sign of spiritual intimacy, to be solving issues without conflict and to be ascending the ladder of holiness.

A Course of Miracles is constantly leading us to what Jesus calls the holy relationship. This is where both of you have consciously chosen the goal of peace. This gives you meaning and determines your experience. This gives two the experience of being one. The moment of sharing is called the holy instant. You have to disconnect from the past and be open to a new way of experiencing things. Joining must

A woman by the name of Della McGee was a good salesperson for us. And I was extremely active in marketing and selling it.

What were your personal feelings about the creation of The Edge at the time?

I knew it was going to be a winner. Here’s why this worked, Tim. There was no place for a person to find out about things like meditation, things like alternative medicine. That’s what was created. It coalesced the community.

Minnesota is relatively small in population, but this is one of the most respected spiritual, metaphysical communities in the United States.

What reaction did you get when The Edge came out?

Oh, boy! It was huge. But it could have been a folly. Many people who we wanted to sell advertising to, to help them promote their events, truly believed that you did not have to run a business involved in spirituality like a business. They did not know what a spreadsheet was. They didn’t know about profit-andloss statements. They had no 2 2 w w w. e d g e m a g a z i n e . n e t

come sincerely from the heart.

The meaning of this holy relationship is to transcend the separation. You are each other’s savior. When you are truly ready to join in a relationship, you will find others to join with you. When you really want peace, you will find other minds to join with who want peace. When you are ready for this holy relationship, you will definitely meet others who are ready for it. You don’t ever have to be alone.

The Holy Spirit If you have a relationship, place the relationship immediately under the care of the Holy Spirit. Invite in the Holy Spirit and his goal, then you will feel the spiritual presence guiding you in your relationship.

If you are trying to turn an old, unholy relationship into a holy relationship, however, there may be a period of discomfort when the old structure and the new goal are at odds with each other. Do not lose faith. God has his foot in the door.

In the holy relationship, you see your partner as sinless. You see his incredible

clue. They said you don’t have to advertise. They said they’ll just say a meditation and put it up in the air and then all the people would come to them.

Well, prior to this time no one turned around and mentioned to them that if they wanted to succeed in what they’re doing it would be quite wise if they would put in a structure and run it like a business. They didn’t know how spirituality and metaphysics could coexist with business. So it was really a growth period for a lot of people.

One of our first advertisers, the Minneapolis School of Massage & Bodywork had been around for a number of years and they were extremely successful, but there was no way to reach their community, their potential instructors & students.

That’s what we created.

We created a way — and still do — to bring people with needs together with people offering services. That is the biggest thing that this magazine does — along with the expo. Those are still two of the strongest parts of this holistic community in the Upper Midwest.

What were some highlights for you as publisher of The Edge?

value. Faith will solve every problem. If a problem comes up between you, you must immediately disconnect from the battlefield, rise above it, stop talking, and invite the Holy Spirit in. Realize that the conflict is not about you and your mate. You are never upset for the reason you think. The problem is always your own mind.

All it takes is one of you to accept the holy instant. The holy instant is when you shift from seeing someone as your enemy to that person being your savior. It is choosing to see them as innocent. You enter fully into the present with no reference to the past.

was a big deal. I had to bite a new bullet. We went color not long after you started as editor, in March 1996. That was big! Jan Adams had the interview with Earl Bakken of Medtronic who had moved to Hawaii to start a healing clinic, and we had an artist with a colorful photo of a volcano.

It all came together so fantastically so my decision was to go with it. It might be one of the smartest things I did to spend the extra money and increase the quality of the product.

A highlight for me overall was the quality of the people that we interviewed and the quality of the people who advertised in The Edge. Advertisers finally began to realize that people involved in spirituality and metaphysics, our readers, also needed things like food, medicine, car repair, a construction company to help them come update their house.

What did the experience of birthing and growing The Edge mean to you personally?

What I didn’t know when I started this is that I had agreed to be a messenger for the holistic lifestyle, the metaphysics factors, before I finished my life. I had the skills to run a business. I had the skills of

marketing and selling.

You know what I gained? I received the insight that there is really a lot more out there in this world beyond what our capitalistic society deems the most important — money. The only reason that the money is important is it gives you the ability to do and produce what you want to do. I think it made me a more balanced person, being around the people I met.

The magazine was responsible for birthing Edge Life Expos and Events. We were really bringing in some really good speakers to the Twin Cities at that time, people like Doreen Virtue.

All in all, I think we all worked hard. Got the thing done.

I’d like to think our goal when this all started was to reach over one million people — and I truly believe that we have exceeded that by a lot of numbers.
