Grounding: Why we need it

by Patrice Connelly First of a 3-part series Grounding is a word and a concept that gets bandied about in yoga, Pilates, exercise programs, consciousness trainings and spiritual programs, but what is grounding?

The definition of grounding I was trained and have taught for close to 35 years is this: Grounding is our connection to and with the Earth. It is the energy streaming from the Earth into our bodies, particularly our feet, legs and into our lower chakras. This Earth energy is there by “right of body.” It is an energy we all use whether we know it or not, and we have access to it whenever we want: it can be increased at will.

Why would we want to increase grounding energy? When we are grounded to the Earth, the grounding actually allows our souls to come in closer to our bodies or physical fields. We can then access our own solutions to problems we face. It brings up our own life force for creating and manifesting what we want. Most of all, it allows us to be in ownership. When we are truly grounded, we cannot be knocked off balance on any level: physically, emotionally, mentally, psychically or spiritually.

This, however, is not a one-way street. In exchange for this abundance of unlimited energy, we each have a contract to give back to the Earth in our own particular fashion. We give back in song, dance, art, growing things, tending children, speaking, writing, loving — in short, demonstrating our affinity with the Earth. And the Earth gives this life force energy back to us, nourishing our bodies and meeting our Soul energy in our hearts.

Learning to ground From the time they are born, children have grounding energy, but they learn how to ground themselves — or not — from their parents and the adults around them until, ideally, around the ages of 5 to 7. In our culture, it may take much longer. do not believe we have access to. That doesn’t work — not for the person seeking grounding and not the grounded person who’s own grounding is then interfered with. Much of this happens on an unconscious level but, conscious or not, it happens.

The great good news is that we can learn to ground ourselves at any time, in any place, at any age and in any physical condition. It requires intent and a willingness to practice daily — sometimes hourly, if it is a stressful time, in the beginning. In these days, with the world news being what it is and worries for our safety, finances,health and well-being, grounding can offer a sense of calm and ownership within ourselves. All it requires is intent, and a few minutes.

Grounding practice Find a quiet place to sit with your feet on the floor when you know you will not be interrupted. Breathe gently and release your grounding cord from the base of your spine, allowing it to go through the chair you are sitting in, through the structure and substructure of the building you are in, allowing it to pass freely through the crust of the Earth.

Take it down through the granite layer, the first fire layer, the conglomerate layer, the second fire layer and hook it securely into the core of the Earth. Invite the Earth energy, by right of body, to come up from the core of the Earth in through your feet, your ankles, your knees, your thighs and into the base of your spine. Let it mingle with the energy already present from the day. Then run the energy back down as you invite more energy to immediately come up all the way into the base of your spine once again.

A continuous loop of grounding energy then flows between the core of the Earth and the base of your spine. That’s all it takes. You can check in throughout the day to see if that energy is still flowing and if not, repeat this practice.

Some people feel sensations as the grounding is happening, others don’t. As you continue to practice with intent, your body will begin to  see GROUNDING on p. 9

Healer Russell FourEagles will lead March workshop Noted shamanic healer and author Russell FourEagles of Wisconsin will lead a workshop on Original Medicine from 2-6 p.m. Saturday, March 25, in the downstairs Fellowship Hall at Lake Harriet Spiritual Community, 4401 Upton Ave. S., Minneapolis.

The four-hour workshop is sponsored by the Minneapolis Theosophical Society as part of the group’s series of lectures and workshops on ancient wisdom and ancient mysteries.

New book studies linguistic patterns of the dying A person’s last words often take on an eerie significance, giving tantalizing clues about the ultimate fate of the human soul. Until recently, however, no one had systematically studied end-of-life communication by using examples from ordinary people.

Linguist Lisa Smartt changed all that with the Final Words Project, which she established in conjunction with worldrenowned afterlife expert Raymond Moody. The project, which chronicles the linguistic patterns and themes behind the words people speak as they leave this world behind, is described in the new book, Words at the Threshold (New World Library).

A quick, go-to bean dish for protein, fiber Food First

by Nutrition Julie Are you looking for some new inspiration for dinner? This is a simple, quick, go-to recipe (based on a recipe by Marco Canora/A Good Food Day) that works great as a main dish or on the side! It’s a tasty combination of beans, greens and herbs that will satisfy even your fussiest customers.

Beans are such an excellent source of protein and fiber that I try to work them in to my weekly meal plans. Traditionally, this would be served with sausage, but I think it is delicious on top of slightly wilted arugula with a drizzle of olive oil. Enjoy!

UCCELETTO BEANS

1/4 cup olive oil 5-6 thinly sliced garlic cloves 1 - 28 oz. can whole peeled tomatoes, roughly chopped, with juices reserved Sea salt (or Himalayan salt) and fresh pepper 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh sage 2 tablespoons finely chopped fresh thyme 1 tablespoon finely chopped fresh rosemary 3 15-oz cans Cannellini beans, drained and rinsed 1/4 - 1/2 cup water (or stock/broth) 2-3 ounces of Arugula (A couple of handfuls) • Start with a cold, high sided skillet, combine olive oil and garlic and heat over high heat. As soon as the garlic starts to turn just even slightly brown (about two minutes), stir in the tomatoes and their reserved juices. Add a pinch of salt and cook for about 5 minutes to reduce the liquid. Add the sage, thyme, rosemary and a generous grinding of fresh pepper, and cook until the herbs are fragrant.

• Add the beans and the water or stock/broth. Cook until there is no longer any liquid pooled on the bottom of the pan, and the sauce sticks to the beans (about 5 minutes).

Humanity’s awakening to Truth A Pleiadian Message

You are being called to open up consciously to the bigger picture that exists in the reality outside of the 3rd dimensional restraints that are on your Earth plane. And you’re being called to open your awareness outside the limitation of planet Earth to where there is the existence of a limitless experience within the Universal realms.

Within the collective consciousness higher realms, where you also reside, you are being summoned to align more fully into your place, which is in a space of creation, held and anchored by your Higher Self. This energetic setting is called “the home space,” and this is where each one of you naturally resides. This can be likened to a jigsaw piece in a puzzle. Each one of you have own your unique frequency place within the puzzle.

Alongside the full Universal Community, we are committed in supporting your individual energetic transition so that you can consciously open up to take your full place within the collective energies within your resident Universe. We hold an energetic space, like an open doorway, to enable you to begin to consciously realign to a higher dimensional aspect of Self so that you can begin to channel this Higher Self energy through your heart and anchor it within your world.

Consciously engage Many changes are taking place on your Earth plane. You are being called to open up and begin to consciously engage and align to your own expanded multidimensional form that has always existed in your place within the Universal realms. This conscious choice action by you will support your planet in this time of transition.

Humanity has a huge role to play in this final transformation of the Earth plane. In truth, mankind’s conscious choice actions ultimately will complete the self-realization of your entire civilization. By embarking on a conscious reconnection to your place within the higher realms, you will be able to accelerate your awakening to another selfrealized potential. This action of opening up and accepting this reality of your Higher Self connection will allow you to move into alignment with the new flow that has been opening up and is operating on the planet.

This completion phase that is to take place on Earth is closer than you realize.

dream. A full remembering process will be activated within all individuals, and in that one moment all that “you are in reality” will be revealed. The veils of illusion will simply lift at that time!

Energy of home What is important at this juncture of your evolution is to first understand, and then to open up consciously to the energy of Home, which does currently exist. Your unique divine frequency signature is anchored beyond the Earth plane, and is held within the collective consciousness realms. Your multidimensional aspect of Self holds a strong, steady anchor to enable you to fulfill your mission here on Earth.

This sacred aspect of you is now actively engaged through your heart center. It is working through a higher dimensional setting that exists beyond the ego mind, so it has no earthly limitations and restrictions. This Truth needs to be fully accepted and directly experienced by you.

You have been anchored and held by your own sacred connection to your Higher Self.

This has created a strong catalyst, enabling you to fully play out this 3rd dimensional experience as a human being, and you have begun a transcending process into a deeper awareness of your higher existence.

Through this connection, you have been enabled to take the steps to moving back on your sacred path, and slowly recognize aspects of your spiritual nature. You have emerged through the veils of illusion and experienced moments of remembering aspects of the Sacred that you are in Truth.

Awakening process Through your whole awakening process, you begin by glimpsing a moment of Truth, which resides beyond this illusion here on your Earth. Then you embark upon a deeper awakening into the unlimited multidimensional realms that link you into your unlimited creation potential that exists as a natural aspect of you. These step-by-step reconnections will allow you to begin drawing from the Higher Self to work through your own natural creation element. This element channels through your heart center from your higher realm energy of Self and will allow you to experience deeper moments of your sacredness.

Every one of you has an innate guidance through your Higher Self through these higher dimensional openings. You may not be fully aware of the full existence of this guidance. At first it may feel like “a knowing” or that something simply feels “right.” The more you act on this “feeling or sense,” the more deeply you will experi-

ence this communication.

Your inner guidance is being accelerated now. This has been made possible through the expansion of multidimensional light that is constantly being anchored on deepening and more expanded levels throughout the planet this month of March. An aspect of the plan is to allow this accelerated unfolding and deepening reconnection to Self.

New dawning Remember: this is the time of the “new dawning” activations. The sun rises each morning, heralding in this happening.

The sun’s rays carry this new potency, a frequency of love consciousness that expands out to all life force, rippling across the planet. Held within this life force energy is the declaration of Truth. This essence is carried within the rising light, which emanates outwards and interlaces within your heart, bringing waves, layers of new consciousness within you and moving outwards across the planet.

This refined energy, which is flowing in layers daily, holds the imprint of awakening for the planet. Know that this “happening” has been pre-ordained. This is a sacred event of creating monumental transformation for the planet and for the entire Universe. There is a new vision for the Earth plane, and each one of you is playing a pivotal role in fulfilling this vision. In reality, you each hold an aspect of this energetic vision within your hearts.

The new heartbeat/pulse that was activated at the time of the New Year has been instrumental in birthing a frequency current that is carrying the essence of this vision of renewal and resurrection.

This energy is currently being activated throughout your world and each one of you has been energetically aligned to the flow of this current within your heart cells.

There is a nutritional component held within this flow as it connects through your heart, deepening the alignment to your Higher Self. This nutritional aspect carries the energy of a deep self-fulfillment and quality of self-love. This action opens the door for you to consciously access another level of alignment within your Home space.

This opening within you is going to allow you to participate more deeply in forming new community groups. Each member of the group will be able to anchor a more complete aspect of their unique divine essence that will form a strong communion base and bond between you.

This communion energy will enable the community group to hold a platform of

the completed vision creating an energetic mirror for all humanity.

Collective mission Each one of you has come to the Earth plane to fulfill a mission, a collective mission.

Know that it was a great gift to have chosen to be here during this transitional time of the “new dawning.” Each individual is having their own experience that they have personally orchestrated to play out their part of this full design. One role is not more important than another. Each role is uniquely played and equally contributes to the whole.

We are here to bring to your awareness the essential role that you are to play on the planet during this period of great diversity and upheaval.

This time frame brings a great challenge within your human communities. Understand that humanity will rise up and meet what has to be resolved in the moment. This is part of your destiny.

People will come together and move into a different rhythm of connection because of the diversity that is currently playing out on the planet. Much will unfold through common goals set between individuals and formed groups coming together. Many new bonds are to be initiated with others, and new understandings of this time will be reached and forged by the energy of Truth.

It is imperative to remain fluid in your thought patterns, opening into a willingness to

play your role simply by letting go. Choose not to move into any fixed ideas or opinions, only to remain open and fluid.

Celebrating differences There needs to be a celebration of the differences between diverse groups to allow a coming together of the full community design. It is the time for this change, which can be accomplished by working together as a collective group.

As you open up and let go, you will move into a full understanding of the importance of what these differences can bring and create within your community design. Through the drama and upheaval taking place in your world, these shifts in consciousness within humanity will continue to take place. Hold this knowingness within your heart that these shifting patterns are to be a vital and necessary dynamic of the new communities. With all birth there is intensity, and then peace and calm can follow.

March Horoscope: melting ice Mercurial Messages through the Zodiac

by Heather Roan Robbins Fire and ice — throughout March, melting snow creates sloppy conditions and a changing, moody world can leave us on uncertain footing. As the month begins, clear priorities can help us stay on track, and a deep connection with spirit helps us walk through the confusing fog as both the sun and Mercury conjunct intuitive, confusing Neptune. The two emotional planets, Venus and Mars in fiery Aries, keep the heat turned up and old emotional ice melts along with the winter snow. Heart rocks from my Angels How my ethereal helpers gave me proof of their presence

by Terri Horsmann It was a sunny day last August when I stepped onto the shore of Lake Erie in Western New York and was thinking about “my” angels and spirit guides. I’d come for an intensive week-long class in advanced mediumship in Lily Dale, NY. Although brimming with excitement, I was a bit nervous about some of the challenges I would be taking on.

Prior to my travels I asked my angels, “Is this right? Am I ready? Will you be with me?” They answered during a meditation and enthusiastically promised, “Have fun!

Enjoy! We’ll be with you every step of the way, every second of every day!”

Stepping onto the beach strewn with layers of rocks, I was feeling like I wanted assurance that they were indeed with me.

A thought popped in my head to ask them for proof by helping me find heart shaped rocks. Something I’d never looked for. This specific request seemed bold, but knowing angels love to have fun, I said, “Let’s play.”

I picked up a few rocks from the surface. None were a clear heart shape or were barely close. I thought to my angels, No, sorry; the shape isn’t defined enough. I could sense them chuckling. I was guided to reverse direction toward a group of other rock hunters and squat down nearby. My angels instructed, “Pick up that little stick and start moving rocks away.” While I did this, I heard from my helpers, “Sometimes you have to dig for the greatest treasures!”

My eyes were drawn to a tiny corner of a rock — less than a quarter inch. I felt nudged to pull it. Suddenly, water ran into the hole, over my fingertips, and rinsed off the surrounding sand and pebbles. Low and behold, there was a nearly perfect heart shaped rock less than an inch in diameter! Stunned, I smiled from ear to

ear and heard them say teasingly, “Does this suffice?”

Amazingly, this was followed by more incalculable experiences and rock finds.

My angels weren’t done playing. A woman stopped to look at the rock I’d just found.

She was thrilled and wanted to take a picture because she posts “heart stuff” on Pinterest! When led to a spot to lay out a towel and sit for a break, I caught site of a white spot on a stone no larger than a cell phone. The spot was a two inch heart someone had scratched or drawn onto the rock!

While sitting on the towel, I absentmindedly ran my hands through the sand and felt a smooth rock the size of a silver dollar. Nudged to pull it out, I saw it had a layered texture and heard, “Put your nail on that layer you’re looking at; gently, peel

it back.” I peeled carefully, as if removing the fragile top off an Oreo cookie. A layer no thicker than a leaf came off and I heard, “Look at the shape.” You got it! A nearly perfect heart shape! I was awestruck.

Leaving the beach, my eyes were drawn to a rock I nearly ignored, but heard, “Check out that one.” I gasped as I picked up a six-inch long narrow rock that looked nearly like a perfect heart-shaped exclamation point! What a finish! I laughed with joy. My angels sure showed me!

I’d learned enough in my college statistics courses to know that the probability of all this happening was about 0 in ubergazillion — without help from a higher source, that is. I was completely assured I was surrounded by these celestial beings.

I felt so clearly what they often want us to know: believe in yourself, you are one with All That Is, you are unconditionally supported and loved, and we are always with you.

It turned out my angels were right, of course, about the upcoming week of intense training. I was ready. There had been no reason for doubt. It was an incredible week of learning with several milestones, and my abilities were right in sync with fabulous classmates. How a Naval Commanding Officer became a Messenger of Hope An Interview with Medium Suzanne Giesemann

by Tim Miejan It’s when the unexpected happens that we learn the most about ourselves. That was no different for Suzanne Giesemann, a retired U.S. Navy Commander who served as special assistant to the Chief of Naval Operations, and as aide to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff on 9/11.

And as difficult as 9/11 was for all of us, what proved even more daunting personally was the unexpected death of her stepdaughter Susan, a sergeant in the Marine Corps who was struck and killed by lightning along with her unborn son.

“I could no longer deny that I needed to get some answers to why do bad things happen to good people, that sort of thing, and that’s what started me on the path,” Suzanne said in a telephone interview with The Edge.

“It was after taking my husband to a medium, and not even knowing that he did not know what a medium was at the time because I certainly had no inclination towards that, that we knew that a greater reality existed because that medium brought to us Susan, with undeniable evidence. I was the biggest skeptic there was, but there was no denying she had tapped into our Susan’s consciousness.

“So, I wrote a few books about mediumship and in the process discovered that I could connect with those on the other side, as well. I started meditating the week that Susan died, and I didn’t realize that in the whole time I was writing these books I was also training my mind to be quiet, so everything just kind of fell into place.”

Suzanne, now an author of 11 books, a metaphysical teacher, and an evidential medium, captivates audiences as she brings hope, healing and comfort through her work. Suzanne’s gift of communication with those on the other side is touted as “a breath of fresh air” with “a quality that is so different from others that it is difficult to describe.” She brings messages of hope and love that go straight to the heart.

that a big leap of faith for you to go to that experience?

SG: It was a huge leap of faith, and I knew

that that medium needed to tell me things about Susan that she could not possibly know. If she had just given me generic messages, I would not have been a believer, but the information she brought through absolutely changed my entire worldview. It took me days to process what she shared, because I could no longer deny that life goes on.

That’s what I seek to do now. When I do a sitting with people, I want them to leave there saying, “Oh, my God! This is real!”

Did your husband, Ty, go through a similar experience as you, in terms of processing what the medium told you?

SG: Absolutely, but, again, he did not know

The following is our conversation with Suzanne about her intuitive gifts — and much more.

How was a former by-the-book Navy commander transformed into a medium and a messenger of hope? I understand that 9/11 played a big role in that transformation for you.

Suzanne Giesemann: It did. That’s what started

me asking the spiritual questions that most of us do when something happens that really gets your attention. I had not been raised with any religious background at all and I started to ask the deeper spiritual questions, but I put them aside after a while. What really started my wake-up call was the unexpected and sudden death of my step-daughter, Susan.

At the time you went to the medium with your husband, I’m guessing that both of you were probably skeptical about the experience. Was

what a medium was, so he was really caught off guard. This woman was sitting with us and she didn’t know who we had lost, and she brought through his daughter with amazing accuracy and things that only we would know. He also did not know how to process that, but it was quite a gift.

How did that experience transform him over the years?

SG: Well, I spent 20 years in the Navy. He

spent 26, retiring as a captain. He was captain of the destroyer and was equally by-the-book. After every one of my readings over the years, as I share with him the evidence that comes through, he knows me and he knows my integrity and so he has been on board the whole time, because he also cannot deny this connection with the other side, based on the evidence.

Prior to starting meditating and getting calm in your mind, did you have any inkling at all that you had intuitive gifts yourself, even as a child?

SG: None, whatsoever. That’s why it was

such a surprise to me, but I also think it is what makes me a good teacher of mediumship now. I take nothing for granted. I have really analyzed what it is that helps to make that connection more and more clear. I’ve used my left brain to my advantage, in that regard — to say this works, that doesn’t work, this is how and why the connection is possible.

What led you to take the big step of doing this work professionally?

SG: Oh, my gosh! It was the healing that

who brought Susan through. The thought that I could bring that kind of life-changing healing to even one other person. I couldn’t not do it! That’s exactly what has resulted over and over in people saying, “This changed my life.” And, it’s so rewarding. I wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.

I tell people I served my country for 20 years, but now I serve humanity at a whole different level — and it’s awesome!

I imagine you have received some positive feedback from your former colleagues in the Navy?

SG: Oh, I have! It’s surprising. Most of them

are blown away, because they knew me then and they’re surprised at the work I’m doing now. I haven’t kept in touch with a lot of my military folks. We’ve just gone off in our own directions, but those who do hear about it are thrilled. If we’re honest with ourselves, most people want to know that there’s more to this life, there’s more after this life, and so to have somebody that they knew and trusted validate for them is wonderful.

All the world’s religions speak of the eternal soul and yet, in our day-to-day lives, many of us do not really believe it to the point where we accept when a loved one passes that they are still with us.

SG: Yeah, we want to. We have hope, but I’ve

gotten to the point after bringing through thousands of souls with such amazing jawdropping evidence that, to me, it is a given and I don’t try to change anybody’s life. I just share the evidence and their jaws drop, and so I try to encourage people to make that connection themselves. Nothing can match the personal experience.

There is so much pain that we feel when a loved one passes, I’m wondering about the purpose of that separation and why our reality is such that the truth about death is obscured for most of us?

SG: I think it’s all part of the system that

we agreed to, that we’ll forget through our belief system where we came from. It’s that beautiful path of discovery. Being human, at times, is very painful, and that leads us to this reawakening.

I know, personally, that I would not be in the beautiful state of awareness that I find myself in daily now — knowing that love is the essence of all that is — had I not had the most painful of all experiences, the loss of my stepdaughter. So, unfortunately, it does take pain to wake us up sometimes, and that’s why I pray daily that my lessons here on Earth school be as painless as possible, knowing that those lessons lead to the greatest learning.

From your work, what have you learned about the nature of the afterlife?

SG: Truly, that love is the essence of All That Is, that no matter what we do here, we are met with love. We also feel how our choices were in alignment or out of alignment with that love. We all immediately ascend to the level that we achieved here, to the level of vibration of energy, of awareness, of that love. You truly do reap what you sow, so that makes it so important for us to learn to love each other in the here and now.

If we don’t do it now, we do it later, right?

SG: Exactly! I tell people that you don’t

automatically sprout angel wings when you get to the other side — you grow them here.

For those who may not wish to visit a medium and, yet, still want to reconnect deeply with a loved one who has passed, is there a way for them to do that?

SG: Absolutely. I talk about meditation, and

immediately some people’s eyes glaze over.

They say, “I can’t quiet my mind.” I teach a method called Sitting In The Power, where you sit with the intention of making that connection, and I teach specific steps that help you to set the human mindset aside.

That’s just one method. There are so many, if somebody’s interested enough. It’s just a practice of seeking to find that part of us that is beyond the human identification.

For those who know the afterlife exists and know that we are immortal souls playing a role as human beings, and yet still they struggle day-to-day in their lives, what can they do to restore the passion and sense of unlimited opportunity that existed when they first came into their bodies?

SG: The greatest answer I can give you is to

study your thoughts. Study your thoughts and question them. What am I telling myself that is keeping me stuck or holding me back? What is this pattern of thinking that says I’m less than I am, which is absolute magnificence? It’s our thoughts that hold us back. We don’t have to change our thoughts. We have to get beneath them, to the very essence from which they emerge.

I understand that you channel Sanaya, a collective consciousness of minds with both a feminine and masculine energy. Can you explain how that whole process began for you?

SG: Yes. I had not studied trance medium-

ship, which is also called channeling. I just sat with a couple of friends one evening hoping to connect with the spirits of loved ones and, suddenly, I became aware of this presence that wanted me to speak. I said mentally, “About what?” And the voice said, “Just speak.”

I opened my mouth and this voice came out, and my friends said later they about fell off their chairs. That was another lifechanging moment for me. After we heard what came through, we wanted to hear more. That was about seven years ago. On my birthday in 2010, this group of spirits

presented themselves to me and I said, “What do I call you?” And they said, “You will call us Sanaya, and you will write and write as Sanaya.” It turns out I have been speaking and speaking as Sanaya, as well.

I can’t deny that this is wisdom and helpful information for us, coming from a level way beyond my pay grade! They speak to me every morning and I write their messages and post them. I have learned to surrender my human identification, my ego, enough that when I get out of the way and let them speak through me, the love that exists is palpable. People who sit in that presence feel it, and we’ve even had some amazing spontaneous healings just by being in their energy.

So, I’m a believer, and my destroyer captain husband who knows me sits in their presence. I just keep doing it as long as it’s helpful, but I do admit that it’s one of the more unusual things that I’ve had to grow into my comfort zone with.

How these sessions have assisted you personally?

SG: Well, listening to their teachings has

taught me how to become a more loving human being. As I run my energy with theirs, I have just had so much more peace in my life. I’m very even-keeled these days, and I truly do love everybody. I might be in dissonance with people’s thoughts and beliefs at times, but I can release that now, thanks to Sanaya and their teachings. Truly, I could never go back to the way I was before, getting so much more identified with the human drama.

Today I just see things from a different level, and it’s a gift beyond my imaginings — all because of Susan’s passing. That’s why I say that what to us may seem like a tragedy when it happens eventually can form itself into a gift.

When you knew her in life you had no clue that she was going to be such a gift to you, did you?

SG: No, and the beauty is that she is now one

of my helpers. It’s fun being an evidencebased medium, because every time she shows up I ask her, “Give me something I don’t know that’s going on with somebody here so I can prove to them it’s really you.”

I could say to her dad, “Hey, Susan showed up this morning.” And he might say, “Yeah, that’s nice, Suzanne.” But Susan will tell me things like, “Well, dad has a toothache.” And, I’ll say, “Ty, you have a toothache?” And, he says, “Yeah, I didn’t tell you about that.” And I can say, “Well, Susan knows.”

People don’t realize that you can communicate with these guides and these loved ones who show up and ask them for evidence. Ask them for signs. They love to give us those things, because they want us to know, “This is real. We are here.”

It’s really well suited for anybody at any level, from someone who does not have a clue to those who have been connecting for years. I just let my team of spirit guides guide the syllabus, and it’s been a very rewarding class for everybody.

What do you want to leave with participants by the end of the class?

SG: First of all with the sense of the awe for

the spirit world, that it is here, that those on the other side are with them, and it’s a cooperative engagement with them. I also want them to leave with a sense of reverence for this work and to truly raise the bar of mediumship, to never settle for less than the most awesome, jaw-dropping evidence we can get. That is what will change minds and show the world that this connection is real, that mediumship is real. It’s all about raising the bar and asking more of ourselves, because we can get that when we push ourselves.

You’ve written a number of books. Do you have anything in progress?

SG: I do! It’s a book about four couples who

just experience a voyage together. All four of us have lost a child, and yet, we’re all in this place of knowing that our kids are with us — and they were even with us on that trip. The messages in the book are that you do not have to remain stuck in your grief forever when you realize that your loved ones who have passed continue on with you, side-by-side with you, in your lives, even though they have their own life going on across the veil.

Hopefully it will be out in about a year.

How has your husband’s relationship with his daughter grown over the years since her passing?

SG: It’s such a blessing for him to know that

she’s here. Like I said, it’s that personal experience that changes everything. He’s heard the evidence from Susan over and over, but last year he was hiking on a trail where they used to hike together. He was thinking about her when he felt two fingers press on his arm so hard that he turned to the side to see who was there with him. Of course, there was no one, and it stunned him so much he had to sit down and wipe away the tears. Finally, he had that personal experience of her presence — and now he really knows. Yeah.

This month, you will be presenting a two-day “Serving Spirit” class on evidence-based mediumship. For whom is your class presented?

SG: It’s for anybody who wants to learn

how to make the connection across the veil. I offer it as a class in mediumship, but I would say that not everybody who comes plans to be a working medium. I have mediums who have been working for years who say they have learned more in my two-day class than they did in years of studying as a medium, because of those nuts-and-bolts tools that I share. by Kris Groth Do you ever find yourself stuck doing the same old things, day in day out, and long for something that lights you up? You are not alone.

In this age of distraction and busyness, we have so many activities going on that we often don’t stop to ask ourselves what it is that we really want. We keep doing what we have always done because it is easier than asking the tough questions or making changes.

Eventually the soul gets so uncomfortable with the same-old that it starts to nudge us toward something better. Those feelings of discontent, restlessness and emptiness are all signs that your soul wants more.

It wants you to find what makes your soul sing, your passion!

Connecting with your soul through healing work or meditation can be very helpful in identifying what your soul is looking for.

How do you do this?

Close your eyes. Imagine the very center of you, and follow this center down through your legs and feet into the Earth. Allow the Earth energy to ground you and also bring you more light up to the center of your body. Then allow the energy to continue upward through the top of your head connecting you to

We fill with an indomitable sense we could accomplish anything. If we watch closely, it is possible to become attuned to when the water surges toward its zenith, or else plunges inevitably into a dark nadir of numbing lethargy.

Everyone wants happiness in this life; but that joy springs not from pursuing the more elevated state; rather, it is found in traversing the entire spectrum of emotions attendant upon the pursuit of what we love.

Doing what we love and loving what we do is more than a bumper sticker mantra. In my twenties, I did everything with passion. I was living spherically, Fellini-style, in every direction, maintaining a childlike wonder and enthusiasm. I pursued life drawing, theatre, poetry and music. I loved freely and often. I followed the flow of a tide that never stopped to muse upon the possible exhaustibility of its oceanic pull.

A child of the ’50s now in her sixties, it’s not simply that I have “slowed down” a bit; I have slid into a torpid, sluggish pace. My energetic engine needs a major overhaul at times. Some mornings, I arise with a fatigue that pulls me like an incessant undertow back toward sleep. How, then, does a creative but somnambulant individual overcome inertia, and as this month’s prompt demands, “ReIgnite [her] passion” for life?

No simple formula will work for everyone.

Each of us has creative areas wherein we excel.

We must figure out how to use them to catapult us out of torpor.

As an artist and spiritually oriented person, I connect with Stones. I have crystals and stones of all colors and kinds — mostly clear, light blue and pink — in beautiful angel trays. They raise my vibrational level both through their visual presence and the invisible, energetic connection they afford.

With my love of language, books are mood elevators. I have shelf-upon-shelf of books.

sion and enrich my life.

I love music. The word “dulcimer” came up as we read a poem in my British Writers 2 class.

A student announced she had a homemade dulcimer, and I persuaded her to bring it to class.

Two days later, I opened my classroom doors to an antic sound, with students laughing and chatting amiably in the background. True, verisimilitude was not served: we were studying the Romantic Era poets, and instead of a period piece, the musician offered her rendition of “Smoke on the Water.” Still, mission accomplished: the resonant plinking as her fingers lighted over frets on her homemade dulcimer ignited the students’ passion for learning. I, in turn, as their instructor quietly savored the experience: a magical, alchemical moment that lifted my spirits and reminded me why I love academia.

As a ceremonial singer, it gives me joy to hang drums around the house, ready to use whenever I feel like it. I have a deer hide drum with a beautiful flower burst pattern from walnut staining its surface, a gift from Cedric. I also have a bear hide drum from a taxidermist. Seeing the drums reminds me of my purpose and keeps me inspired: my purpose is to sing the sacred songs.

Writing, editing, teaching, singing or creating — these ignite my love of existence. Bringing the more creative parts of myself together within the more wizened, experienced self helps me refocus momently. Everything is better now. I love this decade of life. I treasure every inspired breath.

I rejoice in the years that have brought me to integrate so many seemingly disparate abilities and make beauty out of fleeting impressions.

I have become a veritable psychic sculptor, culling and combining materials both melancholic and radiant into new forms that give voice to all the unexpressed things I harbor in my heart.

I’m like those dreary but splendid poets of the Romantic era, caught up in an anomalous net of a perpetual melancholy mingled with a zeal for beauty. A spark of variety

by Lisa Severson When we were children, we saw possibility in everything. Every object could be a toy, and everything we saw contained wonder and sparked ideas and dreams. Every child can be more fascinated with the box a toy came in than with the actual toy, because the box could be anything: a car, a fort, a rocket ship, anything at all.

As we grow up and take on responsibilities, things become more literal. A box is a box. You put things in it.

That is its function. As we grow older, we tend to lose our sense of wonder. Perhaps it’s trained out of us. We are taught to focus on test scores and tangible results and things get more serious. Many “grown-ups” feel like there is something missing in their lives. They don’t feel that spark in their heart and mind any more — or if they do, it’s only on a rare occasion so they try to ignore that feeling of lack and fill it up with something like binge watching TV or surfing social media.

We have become a society of watchers and consumers.

Many people spend more time watching videos about great adventures other people are having than actually having an adventure themselves. We stop believing we have the time or energy to do something other than just what needs to be done, but we all have certain needs that we need to get met.

By looking at the six human needs model, you can see where you are lacking that spark in your life. Certainty, variety, love/connection, significance/importance, growth and contribution are the basic needs we all need to meet on some level in our lives. We want to feel like we are safe and secure (certainty), we need to feel loved and connected to other people, we need to feel like we matter and our lives are important (significance), we need to have variety and fun.

If we have those needs met on some level, the next things we tend to strive for are growth or learning and contributing to something outside ourselves.

Variety as a human need is interesting, because it can come in many forms. Some people get it by choosing a new movie, cooking a new dish or buying a new shirt, while others may get it from bungee jumping or racing cars. You can meet any of the needs at a high level or a destructive level — it all depends on whether how you meet that need is sustainable and healthy.

Variety often is the very “spark” that we feel is missing from our lives. When we get into too much of a routine, it can dampen our enthusiasm for our lives. Have you ever taken an afternoon and gone somewhere completely different and found that you feel energized and full of ideas and enthusiasm? That’s your need for variety getting met at a high level. Everyone needs variety in some way or another in their lives. It can be something big or something small.

Take some time to look at where you get variety in your life. If you see that it’s been lacking lately, make a commitment to change things up a bit.

Find a couple of hours a week to try something different.

Take a community education class, go for a walk somewhere new, take a different route home and look at new scenery.

It can help exercise your creativity and help you see more possibilities in your life.

the Divine (whatever terms you prefer) and bringing Divine light back down through your crown to that center again. Now this center is shining brightly. This is where your soul lives.

Connected to above and below, it is the center of your being. Practice connecting here and get used to what this sensation feels like for you.

What does it feel like when you are connected to your soul? Ask questions and sense the answer. What does it feel like when your soul is saying yes? What does it feel like when it is not in alignment, or when it is saying no?

Practice connecting with your soul by asking simple questions, like “Is this cake good for me to eat?” Feel if your soul is saying yes or no. If deciding between two choices (going for a walk, or watching TV) ask one at a time and discern which one feels in alignment and brings you peace, and which ones brings more tension or anxiety. When you get confident in understanding the answers you are receiving, you can use this to ask tougher questions about your life and your direction.

While connected to your soul, you may receive images, messages or ideas that can guide you to your next step. Synchronistic events start to happen — maybe you feel drawn to harp music, have the idea that you’d like to learn to play the harp, then the next day meet someone who gives harp lessons. Pay attention to all of these opportunities that start to line up for you. You always have the choice whether or not to act on them, but your soul is helping you out by providing these options.

In trying out some of these ideas or inspirations, you will find some that are just for fun, interesting to try once, but there might be something you discover that really lights you up. This is the ultimate goal, to find what ignites your passion and let your soul soar.

When you are in alignment with your soul and living your passions, anything is possible.

Finding my most authentic voice

by Theresa Nutt The other day during my voice lesson, the experience took me to a whole new level. Two years ago when I started working with my voice teacher, I was terrified. And I had a few questions for myself. Who was I to be singing again after 20 years? And how could I spend good money each week on voice lessons when I had no interest in performing? In a moment of clarity, the answer to those questions showed up: I am finding my most authentic voice.

My voice teacher and I found a song that was such an incredible fit for my voice, and I loved singing so much that I was on fire. I found myself humming and singing the tune all day long! It’s a classic jazz song by Ella Fitzgerald, “Cry Me a River.”

The groove was right, the key was right, the arrangement fit my voice perfectly, and the sentiment was perfect for what I have experienced in my life. Singing it was magic and easy! And I just felt a huge “Yes” throughout my entire body.

Obviously, this experience around my singing voice is just the tip of the iceberg.

And it left me thinking of all of the ways I have been cultivating my authentic voice in my life.

More than anything, I want a life that feels like singing that song felt, where the important ingredients that make up my life create the deep feeling of “Yes!” in every cell of my being.

As I continue to call in my heart’s desires, I can become impatient and feel like nothing is happening at times.

Then I am reminded that all of the “No” answers I have been experiencing lately are helping me gain a ton of clarity about what the big “Yes!” looks like. In voice lessons, I have spent two years singing mostly vocal exercises to smooth out the rough patches, train my ears to hear the subtleties better, and strengthen my voice overall. Most days I just wanted to have a voice that sounded good and it seemed like that would never happen!

When I had the pleasure of experiencing what sounds best fit my voice, all

of the hard work to strengthen my voice paid off. I realized that all of the preparation and all of the constantly feeling like I was “getting nowhere fast” was part of this important journey. My persistence in “sticking to it” is finally creating some magic in my life.

If you are like me at all, you learned early on that you shouldn’t trust your most authentic voice. So you spent a lot of time trying to be more like everyone else.

And slowly, over time, you squelched the creativity that was uniquely yours. And when that creativity was squelched, your heart and soul took a hit. Because your unique spark is required in the world.

Expressing it is mission critical to your well-being.

A quote by e.e. cummings leaps to my mind: “To be nobody but yourself in a world which is doing its best, night and day, to make you everybody else means to fight the hardest battle which any human being can fight; and never stop fighting.”

Today I am inviting you to reclaim the authentic voice that is uniquely yours.

Not just your speaking voice, but everything about how you show up in the world. Think about the words you use to express yourself, the way you dress, what you like to spend your free time doing, and any other areas of your life.

It’s about walking a journey one step at a time that allows you to gain clarity about what is uniquely you and letting go of everything else. For me, I am realizing there are some things I need to stop doing in my life to be more authentic.

Trust that how you see things, and how you want to express yourself in your life, are pure magic! You don’t need anyone’s permission or approval. I am giving you full permission right now to just be you.

The Passion of the Heart

by Dr. Patrice (Alethea Sophia) I came to know in a very profound experiential way that the heart was at the center and source of all true knowledge and is the direct link to the Creatrix. That it was the wisdom of the heart that created the sacred dance — this embodied heart consciousness — it was the heart that created the beauty of the internal dance and the interplay of the minutest exchanges within the body and mind. Health, in fact the mental health of a person, emanates from the Heart, Kardeeah in Greek. It is the heart that embodies the blueprint for our divine health and sacred connection.

The experience I speak of above awakened the passion of the heart, and in that, there was nothing else. I was no longer the “me” I knew in this lifetime, in this consciousness. There was another consciousness, of the heart, that saw and understood far more — an ecstatic, passionate, joyful consciousness. I knew things I did not know from this lifetime. The conscious mind, full of its thoughts and internal chatter, had shut down. The heart’s voice was all that was heard…was all that spoke…was all that saw. How fundamentally different this heart wisdom is from that of the conscious, waking mind. Control through our will or mind cannot summon this life-changing, mystical experience.

It is purely an act of Divine grace.

Much of our current spiritual language and practice revolves around stilling the mind and moving from head to the heart, but what does this really mean? In the early days of my spiritual practice, I did different meditations with hands over my heart and visualizations quieting the mind and entering a place of deep peace within.

I felt I was mastering a deep resting in the heart, and to a level I was, but the Great Mystery is just that — a deep and unfathomable mystery. The true heart dwells in that Great Mystery and is just as unfathomable.

As the Great Mystery bestowed its grace upon my heart, I experienced the passionate heart filled with a deep wisdom. In most cases as the love and light/shakti flows through, any unresolved emotions or trauma that dwell there are brought to light. When this occurs, no matter how painful, we need to be receptive, acknowledging and forgiving of ourselves and others as things are brought into the full light of awareness. When the grace of love touches us, most of us will go through turmoil, resistance, and in some cases, grave upheaval. Do not be ashamed or afraid of anything that arises, and I also pray that you don’t turn away from these feelings even if they are painful — for this is a profound gift of healing that has been initiated in your life. Like the great Sufi mystic Rumi says, “The wound is where the light enters you.”

Some spiritual practices seek to control and force this divine energy — known by some as shakti, kundalini or umbilini — up certain

pathways seeking to open the heart and crown.

However, these methods follow a more patriarchal, controlled methodology. It is really the practice of receptivity, with consistent awareness on any resistance we may have, that is critical in aligning our hearts with the Divine Creatrix. This planet has long been under a patriarchal influence, and some of our spiritual practices have been generated under that influence, but the Divine Creatrix is on the move.

Deep heart healing and the fire of a passionate heart is her hallmark. Dance, move, hula and shake to open yourselves up to this beautiful mystery. The ancient bushman of the Kalahari know this secret.

If you find it easier to help others and give extensively of yourself, but cannot receive what is offered to you, then we must look to the heart so it can be healed. As women, mothers, caretakers and healers, we often fall into this pattern.

Even some men can exhibit this pattern, but mostly as it pertains to their work environment.

We care far more for others or for our jobs than we do ourselves. We do not take time to nurture ourselves, and we are very often resistant to accepting or receiving assistance — and more often than not feel insufficient if we do. If we have been hurt in our past, then we will be resistant to love and will find it difficult to receive.

As I wrote in my article in the February 2017 edition of The Edge, resistance is what occurs when we don’t want to let something in — be it love, light, help, nurturance, a new idea, or even allowing or creating change in our lives to save our lives. We remain stuck, and a passionate life remains elusive.

I encourage you to stick with the healing process of feeling and integrating your difficult life passages. Receptivity is the hallmark and the pathway of the Divine Feminine Creatrix.

If the Divine Creatrix has blessed you with this awakening, trust that there is much magic and blessings on the other side of any pain you may be experiencing. The healing and igniting of your passionate heart has begun and your world will never be the same again. The deep magic held in the passionate, ecstatic heart will open heretofore unknown worlds.
