Thriving through uncertainty

An adaptation from the book Thriving Through Uncertainty Life is the art of facing what you don’t want, on the way to creating what you do want. The moment you chase the blue butterfly of desire, it’s likely that you will move through the wastelands of disappointment, rage and self-criticism. It’s just the nature of transition. You are always passing through uncomfortable territory on the way to expansion.

I’ve also noticed that the more conscious I’ve become, the more sensitive I am to pain. In the past, I might have been numb or unaware.

But now, no such luck. It’s like when your foot falls asleep. As you wake up, you suffer the pins and needles of becoming more alive.

So, let me tell you this, my precious, conscious chickadee. How you deal with pain will determine your success and joy in this life.

PROFOUND WAY Years ago, I discovered a courageous and profound way to deal with myself when I’m in pain. It does not involve tequila, Percocet, or bingeordering cubic zirconia jewelry from the Home Shopping Network. Nor does it rule anything out.

This happened some years ago, but it’s not like I’ve never dealt with pain again. I’d been “triggered” again by a nasty bout of self-comparison.

“It’s not fair!” some part of me cried over and over. I slid into a funk of deprivation and frustration.

Let’s just say I’ve been here before.

It’s the same sorry broken record of “I will never get to where I want to be.” I don’t want this agony to return.  see THRIVING on p. 22

Trusting the flow of life

by Lynn Koll A new story is being created on planet Earth, and it’s starring You as the main character! Each of us on our planet is part of the puzzle, and part of the web weaving us all together. Humanity is on a direct trajectory towards ascension, where our higher vibrations will catapult us into 5th and 6th dimensional living, but sometimes I wonder if we will actually make it? Our natural evolutionary impulse is towards oneness and singularity, yet if we look around, duality and separation seems more prevalent than oneness.

Much of what we see in the news propaganda instigates anger and fear.

What arouses in your Soul when hearing about mass shootings, political lies, racism, declining health, and sexual harassment stories? Or about hurricanes, drought, fires, GMOs, chemtrails and the mass vaccine agenda? It’s pretty easy to get caught in the spiraling loop of fear, anger, and negative thinking…Until We Don’t.

Not long ago, I found myself going into that downward spiral of doom and gloom.

what could be done to save the future generations! I want for myself and everyone else to feel safe and protected from the dangers of toxic food and medicines, poisonous EMF radiation, depleted resources, polluted air and water, and horrendous climate disasters.

Then one day while feeling rather depressed, I went to our Medicine Wheel in the woods and performed a simple ceremony, talking to the elements, the four directions and my Higher Self. I was told to stop the doom and gloom thoughts. Being aware is one thing, but I needed to trust that the Universe and all its “events” are fully unfolding in perfect timing and order.

I needed to surrender to the chaos, and realize that transformation comes from change. I made a conscious decision to shift my thoughts and energies to being more positive. We are a free-will planet, and everyone learns, evolves and wakes up according to their own lessons, opportunities, karma and genetically encoded DNA. After shifting to positive attitude mindset, I felt quite a load lift off my shoulders!

As I learned to more fully integrate this new mindset and become more conscious, I started to see my life and the world through new eyes. Instead of looking at what was wrong with everything, I started to see what was right and felt immense gratitude. I chose to open my heart, and found it easier to smile at strangers, feel compassion for the sick, and be more willing to lend a helping hand. Life started to flow more easily and magically, and I lost interest in the need to fix, save, change or figure out “why?”

Sometimes, everything just is.

With the Minnesota winter cold and clouds settling in, it’s easy to slip into a “funk.” To quickly shift my attitude and raise vibes, some advice I have taken from friends is to perform some body movement or yoga, apply essential oils, get outside into Nature, and affirm the perfection of “All is Well.” As I take small movements towards living my passion and purpose, connect with supportive friends and practice self-care, life becomes a beautiful stage of magic, mystery, oneness and awe! a LYNN KOLL is an Author, Personal Evolution Coach, DNA Energy Healer and Ordained Minister. Healthy Life Expo features strongman competition, martial arts As if the Super Bowl isn’t enough excitement for downtown Minneapolis this winter, Healthy Life Expo will showcase the U.S. Strongman Winter Assault Competition on Saturday, March 3, at the Minneapolis Convention Center.

The 29th expo will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on March 3 and 4. Admission is $6 at the door, or free with the donation of a nonperishable food item to the Golden Valley Family Center Food Shelf.

On Sunday, March 4, Healthy Life Expo will host its 3rd annual Martial Arts Show inside the Expo Hall. The show is free to attend for all attendees to the Healthy Life Expo and all proceeds to the Martial Arts Show will be donated to the Wounded Warriors Project.

Healthy Life Expo will showcase 200 local and national exhibitors, including doctors, clinics, nutritionists, healthy cooking chefs, in-home fitness products and authors. Three stages of speakers will hold demonstrations and seminars every hour on the hour, and attendees will be able to sample tons of products and healthy foods throughout the show.

Goodie bags will be handed out to the first 100 people through the gates on both days.

Incorporated in 2002, we opened our brick-n-mortar store on Samhain 2003 (10/31/2003). Our first location was too small, our second location was too big, and our third location is just right!

What is new and different at Eye of Horus for those of us who may not have visited you for a while?

We also have a beautiful collection of “Witch Balls,” which are used to capture negative energy. Hand blown in Poland, each one is a unique piece of art. No two are alike. My favorite story is of two people who happened to be shopping in our store, at the same time.

month, but don’t overextend yourself physically; connect with others around the process of healing, their health and yours, and the health of the society around you. Put relationships on the front burner after February 18; become fully present to the people you love.

Libra (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)…Make this a playful month; takes social risks and keep a twinkle in your eye. Reach into the creative community nearby and hug an artist. Just practice the Golden Rule and keep interactions clear and clean. This can catalyze personal healing towards the end of February.

Weaving connection MERCURIAL MESSAGES THROUGH THE ZODIAC

What will it take to strengthen the fabric of our community? This month let’s converse over the fence, meditate with our Sangha, volunteer, and find like-minded people to work with and those we disagree with intensely — and find a bit of common ground.

February begins with the Sun, Mercury and Venus all in collective, political Aquarius and encourages us to see our interconnection and put that to good use.

But we may be temporarily far-sighted, more able to see far horizons that the needs of those closest to us, unless we choose to look.

Mars in Sagittarius can keep us upbeat and moving forward but we might be a little impatient with complications. After February 10, the focus shifts towards a balance between our community and more intimate connections. Venus enters Pisces on February 10 and softens our heart. A new moon/partial eclipse on February 15 asks us to take responsibility for our place within the group. The sun enters Pisces on February 18 as Venus conjuncts Neptune, and encourages imagination and intimacy, but can raise expectations on relationships.

Activating the Resurrection Essence A PLEIADIAN MESSAGE

Beloved Ones, we greet you. The winds of change have been flowing freely, creating new patterns of light, birthing multidimensional openings across your Earth plane since the New Year. The higher frequencies of God held within the Sun’s rays have been flowing within your energetic systems and reviving, rejuvenating you on a cellular level.

These expanded rays have created a realignment within your body through an activation of what we call a “resurrection essence.” This frequency is now flowing throughout the physical body and energetically opening pathways into other dimensional aspects of your heart chamber. These new patterns of light are creating revelations from the pure form of love emanating from the sun, reopening an access to your divine light consciousness.

Your light shines brighter within. You hold a unique illumination and within the action of these reopenings you are being revealed to your Self. Doorways that have been closed within you can now be accessed. You are becoming a beacon of light, which shines forth from your heart outwards to humanity.

Now is the time to be willing to let go and move forward, not necessarily knowing or understanding your process. This is a time to simply trust and become that which you are in each moment. Not looking ahead or behind you. Not trying to work out what is going on. Instead, being willing to align within this extension of your own heart chamber and witness what is right in the moment.

NATURAL HEART ENERGY There is a destiny call going out to each one of you to step forward, and allow the vastness of your natural Heart energy to flow within your world. There is to be an interweaving of “the love” that you naturally carry within your multidimensional heart to flow outwards, to emerge into humanity.

The “New Dawning” prophesies tell us that this is the time for the illusion of separation to be over. This transformational process, of becoming, begins within your heart. It is designed to first unfold within you, and then love will naturally transmit out to others.

The internal wars you have created within your self, through self-judgment and self-condemnation, have perpetuated the illusion of separation, keeping it firmly in existence in your world. then you have extended this separation out to others in your world.

MASS TRANSFORMATION The energetic transformation on your Earth plane through the repositioning of the sun at the time of New Year holds a new frequency design for the mass transformation, lifting the illusion of separation on your planet. Each one of you on a conscious path has an important role to play within this transformational phase. You have each made a series of pre-agreements to hold “energetic platforms” that carry a series of templates containing aspects of love. This is held in an energetic design that will begin to activate, shifting the illusion of separation within the Earth plane at this juncture of transformation.

This journey of building the “platform” begins with you holding a space of love for yourself, one moment in time. This platform, which is destined to be energetically constructed and then held within your heart, will automatically carry a mirroring.

This can be likened to you creating a pathway for others to follow, enabling them to more easily move through their own process of transformation, of self-acceptance and ultimately self-love.

You are being asked to begin this first step of the process by initially developing within you a moment of compassion and patience for your human traits of imperfection. Through self-introspection, look at one aspect from your journey where you hold a judgment against your self. Review the experience from the perspective that you have done the best you could in the moment. Open into the truth, that in reality there have been no wrong choices made, that each choice has led you into a perfect learning experience.

AUTHENTICITY OF TRUTH There is great significance to opening into this authenticity of Truth. It aligns you into the full potential of each moment: every choice you make opens up the needed experience. You cannot condemn yourself for any decisions you have made in your life!

Another Truth: As a human being you are “perfectly imperfect.” Understand that it is not possible for you to always do things perfectly, for you are always going to make mistakes! Mistakes create the needed learning experiences!

As you open up to these truths, hold yourself with love and compassion for the suffering caused by your self-judgment.

Then breathe with your conscious breath (in and out from the mouth) and let go of the

old judgments within. As you hold yourself with compassion for all the suffering, for just one moment in time, every cell in your body will carry the imprint of that moment.

Each moment you allow the letting go of the judgment, the “letting go energy” becomes accumulative within the cells. A strong base of self-love will develop within you, and this will move you into an even deeper experience of releasing moments of the judgment.

You will begin to build the “platform” for ending the separation within your heart.

This process is an essential role for you to play for yourself right now, accelerating your enlightenment process. The new patterning of light on the planet carries the energy to support you in this resurrection process; it holds the design steady for this next unfolding within you.

A SACRED DESIGN Remember that this is your journey, a sacred design that will be a step-by-step unfolding process. There is no requirement for it to be done perfectly. You will have moments where you can hold yourself with acceptance and other moments where you will move right back into a place of selfjudgment. This is a natural component of your makeup of being human.

What is important is to witness the times when you move into separation with yourself. Observe, “Oh look, I am judging myself right now.” When this is actually happening, don’t move away from yourself. Simply hold yourself with love, knowing you are not perfect within your human self. Know that you will never do things perfectly! Each time you acknowledge your separation, you change an aspect of the powerful cycle of separation, because you are doing it differently through the recognition.

Your journey has never been about getting it right and doing everything perfectly. The true journey is about selfacceptance of your own imperfection!

Self-acceptance is self-love. Self-love naturally ends your separated state within and moves you towards enlightenment. Know that through self-acceptance there will be a building and arising of this element of self-love.

As you progress on this path, you will hold this developed “platform” of selfacceptance steady within your own heart cells. You will then activate another level of your self-realized path by carrying an anchored aspect of this “platform” steady for humanity. Between all of you activating these pathways, there will be the strong forging of this “platform,” which will  see RESURRECTION on p. 14

MISPERCEPTION OF EGO Remember, there is always going to be a misperception of illusion held within your ego mind. The ego misconstrues what is truly taking place within the moment. This misperception creates a state of separation within you at that moment, taking you away from Truth and bringing you into a place of suffering. When you are in this state of separation, you believe that you need something other than what is taking place right in that moment. The ego mind’s story tells you that somehow you are a victim, and in that moment, you are moved away from owning your own creation of the experience.

These misperceptions of the ego move you away from taking full responsibility for your creation. Instead of opening up to what is there for you to learn and understand about your own human vulnerability, you disconnect and are caught in the illusion held within your ego mind. These misperceptions actually separate you from your heart, from Truth that exists.

This is the plan, which is already underway: the gradual development of self-acceptance, which is initiated through the love of holding and embracing your own humanness. This will be achieved through the conscious action of first accepting all that you have experienced and lived in your lifetime up to this moment — and then being willing to explore the depth of what you have endured, emotionally experienced, through the many scenarios you have created and the choices you have made in this lifetime.

STATE OF SEPARATION Separation is one of the main illusions being staged within your human experience on Earth. The process of shutting down as a result of criticism is a dominating factor playing out within your family groups, communities and between individual countries on your Earth plane. This state of separation has become a basic characteristic of your human persona.

An aspect of the transition underway on Earth is a further building of the “platform” to release this element of separation within community. Your heart can become the stabilizing anchor within your day-to-day life, and you become a witness in your interactions with others. The ego mind moves quickly into judgment. The judgment might even be a subtle thought about another person. (For example: “Look at what they are wearing.

They are so loud.”) As you make this judgment, however small, there is an immediate separation process activated in you own heart.

of judgment closes down the love and closes out the joy within you.

Witness yourself with others, how your mind begins to break down your communication and communion with others through this judgment. Become aware of how swiftly the ego mind wants to break down the connection to close off to others in these subtle ways.

There is never a reason to shut down your own heart to another. You personally need your heart to be open to allow the love to flow. With your heart fully open, you access your True inner power and vulnerability.

Vulnerability is strength and this resides within the vastness of your own heart.

No one has the power to hurt you. Only your ego mind can choose to be hurt by another. The ego mind is not aligned to Truth or your heart. The ego mind holds the misperceptions of the illusion. Your heart holds your authentic power. The heart is the one pathway to Truth and love.

by Tim Miejan AS A YOUNG GIRL growing up in São Paulo in southern Brazil, Jurema Silva was exposed to an eclectic blend of spirituality that went beyond the borders of her family’s Catholic Church parish. Yes, on Sunday millions of Brazilians attended mass, but during the week, on Wednesday nights and Friday nights, centers focused on spiritualism and African religions helped the locals explore their gifts of intuition and mediumship.

The openness of her society to myriad forms of spirituality allowed Jurema to feel comfortable connecting with her family’s lineage of mediums, even though it wasn’t spoken about or advertised. As a young teenager, Jurema’s mom pulled her out of Bible School and supported her personal research into the supernatural. Jurema’s older sister introduced her to books that assisted her personal exploration.

That curious young girl matured into the Jurema Silva that we now know as a naturally gifted psychic/medium, spiritual counselor, inspirational speaker and guided energy healer practitioner, who supports the personal growth of Minnesotans and people throughout the world. We spoke with Jurema to learn more about this hidden treasure within our midst.

First of all, let’s introduce you to people who don’t know who you are. How would you describe who you are and what you offer the world?

I am a psychic, a medium, and I am also a healer, and what I bring to the world is my ancient knowledge of healing and also my education on spirituality. I consider myself a woman of the Universe. I learned so much about many religions and also about human behavior and human pain and suffering, the challenges that we go through when we are living in physical form on this planet here.

I offer the insights of my spiritual connection with people, such as solutions for the challenges they face. It’s a healing session actually, not as much of a divination session.

You talk about helping to relieve suffering and say that a lot of people are living with suffering. Tell me a little more about that.

The main reason that we reincarnate, and keep reincarnating, is because we suffer. It’s pain and suffering, those things we cannot release. We cannot move forward because of fear.

Most people act as if they are blind to the purpose they are here as human beings. The reality of the purpose of a human being is not to work for decades and raise children.

You’ve got to have a purpose, and society brings a lot of fear and negativity to our lives, and that causes even more pain and

suffering. We don’t talk about the pain, what we are going through and the challenges we face, because we are not supposed to.

We are supposed to keep everything to ourselves.

If somebody wants to find their purpose, but they don’t have a clue where to begin, what do you recommend?

Everyone, from very young children to my clients in their eighties and nineties, ask, “What’s my purpose here?” The purpose of your life here is to learn and to give, to share your wisdom, really.

It doesn’t matter if you are sharing your knowledge and wisdom within the family by helping and educating your children, or if your purpose is to excel in your job or become a healer. I consider a healer to be a doctor, a nurse, a caregiver, a caretaker, social worker, a psychologist, a professor, a teacher, a writer, a painter, an artist, a musician, a dancer. All those people came to enhance and transform other people’s lives.

That’s the purpose. I ask my clients and students, “What are doing to help others, to enhance others with your own knowledge, with your capability, with your empathy?

What are you doing to help others in need?”

That’s the purpose, really, of us being here.

Your website states that “Jurema guides us to the path of peace, harmony, and confidence by assuring we are not and will never be alone in our divine and yet mysterious life journey.” Please elaborate on what this means?

Yes. Let’s take an example. Let’s say there is a war, and on both sides there are soldiers and captains and commanders. A battalion will not send one soldier to fight alone. It is the same thing with us. It doesn’t matter if you believe in a divine light, a Christhead, Buddha, God — it doesn’t matter what you truly believe. We were not sent back here to this planet alone. We were sent with a battalion of angels, of mentors, spirit guides. Catholics, for example, believe in saints. Yeah, they are here. They are always helping us.

What most people don’t do is to ask for help. We are being helped and influenced daily by the spirit world and what we forget to do is to ask them for help. We keep everything to ourselves, and we feel like it is a burden to ask God for help. In reality, He sends all of those guides and mentors and angels to help us, and they don’t mind helping at all. To the contrary, that’s a part of their spiritual evolution.

On February 24, you will speak at the Psychic & Healing Symposium. What are the key lessons all of us can learn to create a more uplifting life for ourselves?

Everyone wants to know what to do about negativity — and they end up finding out

that negativity starts with their own selves.

We live and we grow up in a society that is very negative from the beginning. It’s coming from our parents, the parents of our parents, because that negativity is passed on.

It’s almost like society unconsciously wants us to fail. The news is negative, the weather is negative, everything around us is very negative. What I’m trying to teach in my lectures is for the person to be alive, that negativity comes from within, and that it is rooted in our society. The key is being able to perceive the negativity from within and also the negativity around them: in work, at home, school, just by going out into society to shop. There is negativity everywhere. The lesson is how you repel it and how you learn how to identify it and change your vibration to a positive one, instead of reacting to negativity.

So, the first key is to identify and become aware of the negativity and then work on yourself to rise above it?

Exactly! You rise above it. The life of anybody will be so much better if there is a constant wave of positive feelings and thoughts. Even if the person is in the midst of a challenge, you have got to turn around and see the result of the challenge as a positive experience. Everything is an experience here as human beings. If we like our own experience or not, if it’s traumatizing, if it’s tough, or not, it is an experience for your own learning, for your own growth, and you’ve got to turn that into a positive.

That’s what is very hard for all of us here. We are constantly negative. We wake up in the morning and we are already negative. We don’t appreciate our faces in the morning, for example. We are our own worst critics.

In reality, most people are perfect. We walk, we breathe, we move our legs, we move our fingers and arms, we use our brains to work, we are intelligent, we can breathe, we can see, we can talk, we can smile. So, we are in the perfect physical state and we forget to appreciate that every time we wake up in the morning. We are breathing, we are walking, we are thinking.

That’s already a blessing and that’s already very positive. To the contrary, we torture ourselves because of our image.

What will people experience at your talk at the Psychic Symposium?

I am a very funny speaker. I bring the public into my lectures, asking them questions and kind of a pushing them around to encourage them to speak up. I want to hear their own experiences. For example, in this lecture coming up, I’m going to give them examples of negativity by using their own body, by using a muscle testing, kinesiology. If there is time, I’m going to use a group to help explore negativity and posi-

tive energy to help to realize what is going on with themselves and society. It’s going to be a very exciting, fun talk.

What were you like as a child? Did you have intuitive insights?

My first experience, when I was probably 4 or 5 years of age, was seeing this image in front of me of a very bony, skinny man with a very warm, nice smile. He was always around the house or in my bedroom, especially at night, communicating with me through my mind. I shared that experience with my mother. I told her twice, three, four times, I don’t know, probably ten times, and she was wondering, wait a minute, she is seeing this image very often.

So she asked me to describe this man.

I described to her the very skinny, bony man with a big brown robe, and he had a cord around his robe, and he wore leather sandals. My mother actually thought at first that it was Jesus, because she is still very Catholic. When I mentioned the birds flying around, animals that were lying blissfully around him, and some birds on his shoulders, she realized that I was seeing St. Francis of Assisi. She told me who he was, but I had no idea who the saint was. But her reaction to that was to buy a huge statue of St. Francis of Assisi and have it at home. She still has it. She is 86 years old, and she lights a candle every Tuesday for him because she believes that he protects me, I guess.

That was my first experience. I wasn’t sharing that experience with others, and my mother didn’t share it so much with the family, because events like that within the family were very common in Brazil, but at that time you didn’t advertise so much. It wasn’t a big deal, especially on my mother’s family side, because there are some mediums there. It runs in the family.

So, my mother didn’t have to advertise. It was something special that she appreciated, but it was not like, “Oh, my God! My daughter has a problem!” No. It wasn’t like that at all. It actually was very smooth.

When did you have your first experience with seeing somebody from the other side?

Oh, I was probably 10 or 11, maybe before, but I don’t remember the exact time when I received messages from a person to give to a friend in school. That was my first time. I remember that clearly, it was her grandmother who passed away. I would say it was not even a year since she passed, and she came with a message to give to my little friend.

How did your friend respond?

Psychics and mediums I have interviewed have said that at some point in school you become ridiculed for being different. Did you withhold some of your intuitive abilities as you were growing up?

I had to because of society. At the same time, I was blessed to grow up in a country where Christianity was, what’s the word, synchronized with African and spiritual religions, so I was not judged so much for having my gifts.

Of course, I did not advertise and I didn’t use it all the time in public or with strangers or even friends and family. But I was blessed to be born in a country that is a lot more open society than the United States of America.

In Brazil, at least when I was growing up there, people were going to a Catholic church for a mass every Sunday morning, but on Wednesday nights, Friday nights, they were in a temple or a spiritual center.

What led you to begin doing what you are doing now full time?

When I was 5 years old I told my parents that I wanted to become a neurosurgeon, and they looked at each other and I obviously figured out that there were no funds for that.

Financially, they could not afford to send me to medical school, so I decided to become a reporter, a journalist, to write and travel all over the world interviewing people.

The main reason was because I was turning my back on my gifts. I didn’t really believe that I was gifted. I didn’t think it was for myself.

Yeah, there are great mediums and psychics in Brazil, but that was not for me. Yeah, I have cousins and aunties who are mediums, but that’s not for me. I needed to figure out who I was, what I was here for, and the challenge was for me to go out there and interview somebody new every day. That’s what I really wanted, so I just turned my back on my gifts.

I tried to ignore them for many decades.

What led you to choose the way of living that you have now?

Trauma, first of all. A terrible experience that I had years ago made me feel…it’s hard to explain, but I’m going to use those words… feel like the layers of my own self were coming apart. The layers were peeling off of me.

It’s almost like a veil came off — and there was so much pain. Then I started seeing the world in a totally different way. I start seeing people’s vibrations, people’s feelings of happiness and joy, and pain and suffering, and all the issues that we human beings go through.

The vibrations and the energy were around everywhere.

I was seeing and sensing a lot more after I experienced this trauma, and the messages were so much clearer. The main message

was to turn around and fulfill my mission, which I already knew since when I was a very young child,. That’s what I did. I closed a half million dollar business that I owned here in Minnesota to become a professional psychic and medium.

What insights can you share related to what we’re now experiencing on this planet?

Transformation. It feels like it is a huge storm that we are experiencing. Remember after a strong summer storm, after the dark clouds go away and the sun comes back out, that the birds are singing again, and the animals are out. It’s almost like we need this storm, spiritually, to shake things up, for a shift of energy to ascend the consciousness of the planet of human beings to a positive and harmonious level, for us to start respecting ourselves and respecting each other and respecting the planet again.

So, for the people who are being shaken up internally during this time, what message do you have for them on how to respond to this chaos?

The healers are feeling this shift a lot. There are a lot of people, I think, who are literally losing their minds, because they can’t handle what is going on.

Most people cannot accept what they perceive because it is contrary to what they believe. Nobody listens to other human beings anymore. It is not a matter of whether you accept other people’s opinions and beliefs, it is just a matter of sitting down and listening.

We are in constant resistance to what is out there.

We have got to fight with love. We’ve got to sit down and listen.

What final message would you like to leave with our readers on walking this journey that we’re on right now?

First of all, we have to exercise patience, selflove and respect. Human beings are more and more isolated from their own selves and from society. I see more and more people disconnect from themselves and disconnect from others. We need to come together and work together. We are spirits. What we aim for is union and love, and that’s not happening.

We need to exercise love and union. That’s very important. From union comes peace.

From union comes resolution. From sitting together and expressing yourself — and I’m not just talking about the world, this could be at home, too, with your spouse and with your children — comes resolution, and that’s peace, that’s love, that’s care. I wish that every single human being will just have some patience and express love for others, and union. FEBRUARY ANGST SPIRIT LEAVES

by Janet Michele Red Feather Inspiration for this month’s column came from a work colleague. Poised at the threshold of my office door, a brilliant but beleaguered educator shared some reflections upon the overwhelming anxiety that encroaches in winter months. Following two January full moons and frigid temperatures, faculty and students alike seem to require extra doses of comfort. My fellow instructor brandished her cell phone to reveal a photo of her cat sprawled on its back, impaled on an electric heating pad.

The cat was smart: he discovered his own form of stress reduction.

Animals, as well as plants, find ways to adjust to changing conditions intuitively. People, on the other hand, seem to experience an adverse mood affect in winter. Around them they see only a cold, stark, dry, desolate landscape, and they quickly become depressed. Experts opine that reduced sunlight and indoor living provoke episodes of SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder).

“Traditional Native people,” Cedric Red Feather reminds me, “look at the seasons

differently. They don’t favor one season over another. They see them all as part of a cycle of change, part of the balance in Nature. You’ll hear an elder say, ‘I have lived 68 winters.’ Why does he say that?

It is because it is a good thing to have survived those winters.”

If you’re in transit when anxiety strikes, get closer to nature. Trees are great energy transformers. Even the open sky can be an assuaging parent. Native Americans refer to the Earth as their Mother, and the Sky as their Father. While the popular culture has rendered these names kitsch, they can be reimagined and more deeply experienced with just a little original thinking and focus. Address them silently, from inside your heart as something sacred. That connection can be calming and healing.

Request comfort and counsel, and await visible signs. Answers appear as forms in clouds, waving tree branches, or acronymical license plates.

Anxiety is a 21st-century reality, but we are not “stuck” with it. For some, angst is a sudden undertow, pulling us into a dizzying whitewater ride. Our lives spiral out of control, and we feel helpless.

Breathing becomes shallow; the heart rate increases. Now we have somatic correlatives, physical validation for the intractable notion that something is very, very wrong.

How do we address the monumental sense of uneasiness that brings to her knees even the most perspicacious among us?

We can begin by weaning ourselves from electronic devices. Technology can be a friend, but it must not become a co-dependent partner. Harvest moments of silence as golden opportunities for introspection. We lose the precious ability to be philosophic and self-reflective, and this breeds anxiety. Read, reflect, write in a journal. Journaling is great tool for understanding. Writing out our inner stream allows access to unconscious places in need of support and illumination.

Attempting to resist a negative state is counterproductive. Just let it go. Let it happen. Everything has a purpose, even  see ANGST on p. 22

Yoga: A Sacred Practice

Yoga is a sacred practice. And the more I mindfully practice, the more immersed I am in my spirituality. I step onto my yoga mat every morning, because yoga balances my whole being and helps me to be centered.

Yoga touches my ancient spirit. I believe that people pick up where they left off in their previous life. I was a yogi, and I will always be a yogi. I envision my eternal teachers showing up in my current life, encouraging and supporting my lifelong study of yoga.

I took a study abroad trip to India in 2015. India is the spiritual capital of the world, and yoga originated there. I remember my first day of yoga classes, sitting in the expansive yoga hall, listening to the angel-like chanting. I felt mystical and timeless. It was the universal energy that I could feel in the smoky air that made my yoga practice in India so special.

I was mindful and connected with everyone and everything.

Like quantum physics, I could tap into the unified field. I felt a great joy to be alive, and I understood that my life has a purpose.

One of the spiritual paths of a yogi is through service (karma yoga). Pujya Swami Chidanand Saraswati, a guru in India, says, “Let your selfless service be your prayer and your meditation.” Yoga isn’t about the ego; it’s about sharing your wisdom and skills with the world.

As a yogi who practices karma yoga, I volunteer at a mindfulness center. I teach yoga once 2 0 W W W. E D G E M A G A Z I N E . N E T

a week and teach yoga during the meditation retreats. Also, a significant part of my selfless service is working with the dying as a hospice massage therapist. Yoga and meditation help me to stay calm and remain in the present moment with my patients. I honor each patient with silent prayers as my hands gently bless the body and soul.

Yoga helps me control my mind and body. B. K. S. Iyengar, a renowned yoga teacher, states, “Yoga is the method by which the restless mind is calmed and the energy directed into constructive channels.” These channels are the chakras. Iyengar continues to say in his book, Light on Yoga, that “chakra means a nerve center, the fly-wheels in the machine, that is human the body.” My recent exploration is working more intensely with yoga and the chakras.

The chakras are like the strings on a violin and yoga is the tuning fork. Yoga balances all the chakras in the body. When I balance my chakras, I feel in rhythm with life. Life is challenging, but I find solace when I step onto my yoga mat. Yoga is a blessing, and I dedicate myself to the sacred practice. a GINA M. I was raised Catholic, although, because my father is Lutheran, I always knew and honored other spiritual paths.

In 1992, as I went off to graduate school out East, I decided that one of my personal goals for this time period would to be explore, develop and strengthen my spirituality. This decision led me on a wonderful path of fully embracing Christianity, singing for my church in a gospel choir and opening my heart wider and wider to the oneness and holiness of humanity.

In 2001, I realized that another spiritual teacher of mine was beckoning me, and in April 2002, I met my guru, Great Master Dechan Jueren, 49th lineage bearer of the Chinese Esoteric (Hanmi) Buddhist school. He was teaching to a large conference of more than 2,000 people in Mount Shasta, Calif., and yet, when he spoke, my heart opened. I knew then that I wanted to become his student.

Over the years I have heard Great Master Dechan Jueren teach many times, often reiterating basic principles that I refer to as Hanmi Buddhist guiding tenets. They are: Expect the best from yourself; respect all, as if they are your mother and father; forgive all; help all, without expecting anything in return; and give others the easy and happy path, take the difficulty for yourself.

When anyone follows these tenets, it is as if one is planting wonderful vegetables and beautiful flowers in one’s garden of life. One’s luck improves. One’s health is better.

Simply, one’s path is smoother, lighter, easier.

When we are born into this world, we have received the most wonderful gift of human birth. It is a precious gift, because it is the only realm in which we have the possibility to transform spiritually. It is the only realm in which we have the opportunity to awaken our Buddha-natures, to become a Buddha. Because we have received this wondrous gift of birth from our father and mother, it behooves us to respect and to honor them all of their days. Following this tenet is a holy act. Also, when we respect and honor others as if they are our father and mother, we have seized the opportunity to create sacred ground among us.

As we go about our lives, invariably we make mistakes and hurt others. Others also make mistakes and hurt us.

When we can forgive others for the mistakes, we release ourselves and we release them from our endless karmic cycle of suffering with them. Actually letting it go, forgiving, even when “they were wrong,” is a holy act.

Helping others without expecting anything in return is also holy. It is through these many small and large kindnesses to others that we can not only make our larger world a better place, but we can make our own worlds better, our own paths easier, our own bodies healthier. When we are able to focus on others’ happiness and wellness, ours invariably improves, as well. Importantly, it is in helping others

without talking about it, without wanting to get noticed for it, without fanfare, that the greatest spiritual blessings are received.

Humility transforms our service exponentially.

The final tenet, to allow others the easy and happy path and to take the difficulties instead, is another way of helping one another. Perhaps it is a simple choice to let the car pull in ahead of you on the freeway, even though it will slow you down. Perhaps it is giving up your seat for someone on the bus and standing, so that they can sit.

Perhaps it is any one of the many ways most parents do this all the time for their children, and how children could learn to do the same for their parents. This way of going through life creates many holy moments for all involved.

It is amazing how simple these spiritual practices are, and yet they are often not easy. If we are also practicing Hanmi Buddhist dharma meditation, we are able to use the practice of the Hanmi Buddhist tenets to transform ourselves, purifying ourselves. As we transform and purify ourselves, our actual meditation practice improves, and gradually we are able to awaken our own Buddha nature. a VAJRACHARYA ZHICHAN, CHARLOTTE M. Yoga balances my Spirit

by Maria Lisa Polegatto I have fond memories of being a child practicing yoga with my mother. We sat on the floor and bent ourselves in many poses to strengthen our minds and bodies.

It has served to balance my spirit as life unfolded over the years.

Yoga has always helped to ground my feet to the Earth, allowed me to feel balanced, and assisted me in strengthening my core. It is a way of life that has allowed me to stretch outward and upward and reach for the sun illuminating within.

Waking up in the morning and stretching while breathing in life revitalizes my spirit. Exhaling throughout the day releases the stresses of life. Evening yoga relaxes into a deep meditation, rewarding with a peaceful slumber of dreams that dance through my mind until the morning sunshine gently awakens for another day. Yoga is that complex, yet so simple, to carry with you in life.

Yoga weighs nothing while allowing you to feel the lightness of spirit that soars like an eagle to the top of the mountain to rest on the highest tree top to meditate into the world within you and be at peace in the stillness, knowing all is well. It is empowering and allows me to set flight with dreams, reaching far and wide, coming inward with compassion for struggles and providing tranquility as the breath of life instills peace and calmness into my spirit. I am at peace. I am compassion. I am a warrior of love.

I find myself instinctively doing yoga at the ocean, taking in the beauty with

arms outstretched, being thankful for all that life has blessed me with as I take in the spiritual aspects of being outside in the miracles that nature bestows upon us and the love that animals so freely offer us. The feeling of gratitude, compassion and understanding that yoga provides allows me to connect with the Earth and be thankful for all it provides, while balancing my spirit into a sense of inner freedom to break free of the confines of humanity and allow love to flow deeply within me.

Yoga has never been just an exercise for me. It is an awareness we are one with the world, the very dirt we walk on that fills us with nutrition, the sun we reach up to that warms our spirit, the body we occupy that allows us to carry out our life purpose.

The quieting of the mind allows us to hear that which comes forward to share with the world. Yoga assists us in being a better person each day, going forward with love in our hearts. It offers the love that Spirit so freely offers us to experience and then share, coming forward to unite humanity as we stand and reach forward into our inner reservoirs of love.

Maybe it’s the soul, signaling a need for greater insulation.

Fold the hands together as in meditation, and create a mantra. I like the one from the film, Safe: “I am one with the power that created me.

I am safe. All is well in my world.”

Perhaps mind and body want you to slow down and pay closer attention. They want you to nurture yourself, to engage in self-care. Do something to change the energy and atmosphere around you. Light some incense, turn on the aromatherapy mister, open a diffuser bottle. Drop some essential oils into a hot bath.

Add some mini-marshmallows to a cup of cocoa; cover up with a throw blanket.

Warm your feet by a fire.

Winter should be a time of cozying in. Thoughts turned inward may yield just as much peace and grace as gazing at a sparkling snowy landscape. Anxiety can be a prompt for educating the self about its need for attention and cultivation. We could respond with self-love instead of reproach to create sanctuary when life seems to rise around us like a blazing blizzard. We can strive to become more like our Traditional Elders by understanding that absolutely everything in life is temporary, and Sacred. a

It has come to my house so many times and broken the dishes and kicked in the walls. But when it comes I feel as though I have little say. All my years of therapy, spiritual practice, and even teaching do not protect me from this vulnerability — which really, really makes me want my money back.

I know some spiritual leaders say that this pain is “optional.” Well, let them walk on water in stilettos; I’m drowning. My pain is the only dish on the menu — the only menu in the only diner. Basically, it’s what’s for dinner. You may find yourself here sometimes. You’re hurting. Yes, you know you’re making yourself miserable by what you’re thinking. But you are so far beyond finding that helpful right now. You just want a helicopter out of your despair.

Ironically, I was at a beautiful retreat center when this experience happened. Yes, life does have a sense of humor. There were ongoing workshops on meditation, yoga, and healing taking place. I paused by a still pond blossoming with water lilies. Barefoot and bald meditators walked by me, smiling with serenity. I wanted to trip them as they passed. I am not well, I tell you.

POWERS OF THE HEAVENS Heal my mind, I pray to any God who will listen.

Take these thoughts away. I stomp my foot, a princess calling upon the powers of the heavens as though they are disobedient maidservants.

Nothing happens. Evidently, in this pain I cannot even pray right.

That night, I talk to Nancy, a woman I have just met. Nancy is a healer by trade. But more than that, she is a healer by the way she looks at me. I am hoping she will give me some Sanskrit mantra or insight to make it instantly disappear.

I am hoping she has some kind of talisman tucked up her sleeve. But she says something I am not expecting. When I ask her, “What should I do?” she says quietly, “I guess there is nothing to do — but feel the pain.”

I guess there is nothing to do but feel the pain.

These words slow down time.

Part of me wants to say, “Come again?”

But the wise part of me, the one that instantaneously recognizes truth, wants to giggle and toss jelly beans at her feet. That part understands and claps its hands.

TO FEEL SORROW I feel her recognize my sorrow and suddenly I recognize it — and I recognize that it’s okay to feel sorrow. The moment Nancy says, “Feel the pain,” I don’t feel lonely or separate from my life anymore. I feel as though I can be in this exact moment, in this exact state of mind. I feel as though she is asking me to allow Divine Genius, the eternal lover of the present moment, back into my heart. I’m being asked to allow myself to experience the medicine and message of the moment.

Suddenly I realize I don’t need Spirit to take

away the pain. I only want Spirit to sit with me while I feel the pain. I need to sit with this part of myself. She needs to be heard. This is maitri, a Buddhist practice of loving-kindness.

With acceptance and love, the poison will move through. This frightened part of myself will know how to move forward from here.

In the end, pain opened my heart to myself.

It’s always that way. I feel the love of the Infinite when I feel my own love. I feel that love when I stop running away from any part of myself or any experience I am having. I am willing to feel my pain. I am willing to feel my love.

RESISTANCE TO PAIN An inspired life is not a life of avoiding pain.

It’s not negative to feel pain. No feeling is ever wrong. I am not weak or limited for feeling pain.

This life is one of impermanence and change and demands a great deal from all of us. My spirit remains invulnerable. Which means it’s safe for me to feel vulnerable. It’s not pain that makes me feel isolated and frightened. It’s my resistance to pain that closes my heart to myself and my experience.

I invite you to sit with yourself in the middle of a feeling that is uncomfortable — and bring in self-compassion. You deserve this grace. Feel the pain.

I have faith in your ability to heal yourself.

I have faith in your ability to allow and absorb and find comfort with the truth of exactly where you find yourself in this moment.
