EAST TOO STRONG FOR THE WEST

The fifth annual U16 East v West Intraleague match was played on a cool, dry Wednesday night at Yarragon Recreation Reserve. In a historic result, the East claimed its first victory in the fixture with an emphatic 50-point win. The ledger now stands at three wins to the West, one to the East and one draw in the inaugural 2022 match.

The West team comprised players from Bunyip (1st on the ladder), Catani (7th), Ellinbank (8th), Poowong (3rd), Lang Lang/ Nyora (10th) and Longwarry (9th). The East team was represented by Buln Buln (2nd), Nilma Darnum (4th), Trafalgar (5th), Neerim Neerim South (11th) and Yarragon (6th).

The East dominated from the outset, produced a constant stream of attacks and if not for poor conversion in front of goal could have gone into the quarter time break with far greater than a 27-point buffer. The West struggled to contain the presence of East CoCaptain Jake Dinsdale who kicked two goals in the first team while Ayden Frost chimed in with another after a crafty left foot snap.

In the second quarter Dinsdale steered through this third major before the West gained a foothold in the game and reduced the deficit to 15 points thanks to goals by Coby Hoult, after a strong mark, Reid Collins from an angle and captain Kade Zealley with a fine snap after a smart assist from Jordy Mackin. A late six-pointer by Rylee Johnson put the East team 21 points to the good at the main break.

After half time the West pegged back the

margin to 15 points once again when Collins drilled through his second goal from close range but for the rest of the term the East asserted its control and with goals to Ayden Frost, his second, Campbell Moore and Dinsdale, his fourth, the East led comfortably at three-quarter time by 36 points.

In the last term the West showed some early resistance when Noah McCaughey kicked the first goal of the quarter but from then on the script was similar to the previous term with the East too slick and it extended its lead to 50 points at the final siren due to the last three goals of the match, these kicked by Lachlan Gringhuis, Tyler Wakefield and Lenny Heatley. The East showed better teamwork, unity and purpose throughout.

After the match, EDFNL Junior Interleague Co-ordinator Stephen Pratt asked coaches Joel Norton and Gerard Bongiorno to present their respective teams with best-player medals. The East award was taken home by its Vice-Captain and Nilma Darnum’s James Midgley, who showed good aerial skills, positioning and ground coverage across the entire game while the West medal went to Ellinbank’s Riley Davidson, who was central figure in and around the midfield.

For the East, in addition to James Midgley, it had a good spread of contributors led by Jake Dinsdale, who impressed all over the field while midfielders Corey Smith, Noah Tweddle and Koby McLeish fed the forwards often and forwards Ayden Frost and Lenny Heatley presented well. defender Will Tuck defused several threatening attacks.

In addition to playmaker Riley Davidson, others to impress for the West were Co-Captains Kade Zealley and Aiden Kane, both who contested strongly while defender Spencer Patterson stood up to be counted with some timely spoils. Ruckman Samuel Blackley caught the eye quite a few times and forwards Coby Hoult and Noah McCaughey often looked a threat.

The league thanks all coaches: for the West; Joel Norton, Sam Pratt and runner Tom Burgess; and for the East, Gerard Bongiorno, Steve Tweddle and Brett Tonkin. It would also like to acknowledge trainers Alan Massaro and Jamie Olierook, photographer Jeff Tull, Yarragon Football Netball Club for providing the ground and facilities, the Gippsland Umpires Association for officiating the match, and Roger Gwynne for his assistance with all the errands in the lead up to the match.

LONGWARRY ROUND 12 | MENTAL HEALTH ROUND

Today we head to Traf for Round 12, proudly supporting Mental Health Round alongside Mindful Aus.

Across our senior football and netball grades, we’ll be wearing special guernseys and dresses to help raise awareness for mental health – an important reminder of the value of looking after ourselves and each other, both on and off the field.

A special shout-out to two of our own celebrating major milestones today. Tiarnee Browney brings up a remarkable 250 games in club colours, while Braydo McHugh reaches 150 senior games. Both have been fantastic contributors to our club and these milestones are a reflection of their dedication, loyalty and passion. Congratulations Tiarnee and Braydo – we hope it’s a day to remember!

Last Saturdays clash against Ellinbank was played in awful weather conditions, making things tough for players across both the football field and netball courts. Despite the weather, our teams showed plenty of determination and fought hard all day.

A Grade came away with a fantastic one goal win, 35-34, while our U17s also secured a strong victory. The U15s battled hard to finish with a draw.

In the football, our U16s and U18s continued

their impressive seasons with convincing wins. While the Reserves and Seniors couldn’t get the points, both sides stuck at it against quality opposition in difficult conditions.

A huge thank you to our players, coaches, volunteers and supporters who braved the weather and represented the club with pride.

Today we head to Catani for another important round as we continue the second half of the season.

Round 12 – we welcome Yarragon at home this week, as we begin to meet teams for the second time around.

Our seniors have come off a tough run but continue to work hard and show some great tenacity for a very young side.

Our u16 footballers and u15 netballers are both sitting comfortably in the top 3 after playing everyone once, so will be looking to keep the form in the back half of the season.

There are plenty of A Grade sides in the running for 4th and 5th spots on the ladder, so hopefully our girls can find the form we know they are capable of to have a crack at finals this year.

But overall, it is so pleasing to see the development of all our

teams over the season – both on the field/court and off.

This progress doesn’t happen by accident. Our coaches across football and netball put in countless hours – planning sessions, developing players, supporting individuals, and fostering team spirit. Their commitment, as well as a huge number of other volunteers, is what makes Poowong such a great community to be involved in.

This week we welcome Nyora to the Kennel for another big day of football and netball. We look forward to seeing plenty of supporters around the grounds as our teams take on the Saints.

Good luck also to our Junior Club, who take on local rivals Longwarry on Sunday. These matches are always fiercely contested, and we know our junior Bulldogs will represent the club with pride.

UMPIRE CODE OF RESPECT POLICY

• All players will display total respect towards umpires and always abide by their decisions and directions.

• Supporters are asked to treat the umpires with respect and to accept their decision and also ensure that any comments made during the course of the game do not become personal or offensive.

• The Ellinbank & District Football Netball League will take a strong stand against any player or supporter who fails to consider the umpire code of respect policy

NETBALL UMPIRES COURSE OPPORTUNITY

As the game of Netball continues to evolve, the emphasis on player safety is paramount. To ensure our umpires are equipped with the appropriate tools to maintain control of a match, the EDFNL is hosting a Game & Match Management workshop.

This workshop aims to give umpires an improved understanding of Rule 18 – Game Management and Rule 19 – Foul Play of the Rules of Netball.

Topics covered include characteristics and skills required for effective match management, breaking down the game management actions and protocols, and clarifying what is covered by foul play.

We also discuss match management techniques and how these can work effectively alongside the game management procedures with the hope of increasing umpire’s knowledge and confidence when it comes to the application of game management.
