2026 THE FOLLOWER FINALS

NETBALL MATCH REPORT 2nd SEMI FINALS

The road to the EDFNL Grand Final continued at Catani on Saturday, with six Second Semi Finals played in ideal conditions for netball. Despite overcast skies, there was no wind to contend with, allowing for some great netball in front of a large and vocal finals crowd.

With a direct passage to the Grand Final awaiting the winner of each match, the stakes were high. For the losing sides, the double chance means their season remains alive, with a Preliminary Final next weekend providing one last opportunity to earn their place in the big dance. The 13s opened the days action, with undefeated Buln Buln taking on Yarragon for the first place in the 2026 Grand Final. The Lyrebirds made the stronger start, with their defensive pressure and ability to rebound the ball helping them establish a 9–5 quarter-time lead. The contest was played with plenty of intensity, with Yarragon working hard to challenge the competition leaders. Buln Buln’s ability to stay composed, apply pressure across the court and make the most of their opportunities ultimately allowed them to build the decisive advantage. The Lyrebirds finished the match strongly to secure the 12-goal victory, 37-25 and direct passage through to the Grand Final. Buln Buln Centre Macy E was named Best on Court for an excellent performance through the midcourt. Poowong booked their place in the Grand Final after holding off a determined Buln Buln side to record a thrilling 25-22 victory.

PAGE 12

The Lyrebirds started strongly and led 7-5 at quarter time, with their defensive pressure making Poowong work for every possession. The Pies responded in the second term, settling into the contest and turning the two-goal deficit into

an 11-9 half-time lead. The pressure lifted again after the main break. Buln Buln scored the opening three goals of the third quarter and the match became a genuine arm wrestle, with neither side prepared to give an inch. With the game on the line, the minor premiers showed their composure. Poowong produced an eight-goal final quarter to Buln Buln’s six, finishing three goals clear and earning direct passage through to the Grand Final. Poowong Centre Mia W was named Best on Court after an outstanding four-quarter performance. Catani came out with tremendous intensity to start the 17s match, combining team defence with confident attacking play to establish a 14-9 quarter-time lead against minor premiers Yarragon. The Panthers responded in the second term and continued to apply pressure, but Catani maintained their composure and took a 23-19 advantage into the main break. Yarragon lifted again after half time and closed the margin, but Catani continued to answer every challenge. The Blues held a narrow two goal lead at three-quarter time, setting up a huge final quarter between two sides that had been separated by just one goal in Round 2 before drawing in Round 16. Yarragon threw everything at Catani in the last, but the Blues refused to surrender their advantage. In a gripping finish, Catani held on by two goals, 40-38 with Catani Centre, Miley W, named Best on Court after a brilliant performance in the middle. The opening quarter set the tone for the C Grade game between Lang Lang and Ellinbank, with both sides applying strong defensive pressure

with neither able to establish a decisive break. Ellinbank repeatedly pushed ahead, only for the Tigers to respond.

Lang Lang made their move in the second quarter, levelling the scores and then capitalising on a turnover to take the lead going into half time one goal ahead, 19-18. Both teams made changes through the third term in an effort to gain control, with the Tigers extending the margin slightly to lead 27-25 at the final change. Ellinbank struck first in the last quarter, but Lang Lang answered with composed connections in attack and maintained control in a high-quality finish. The Tigers prevailed 36-32 to earn their Grand Final berth, while last year’s premiers will head to the Preliminary Final. Ellinbank Centre Kristi Brinksma was named Best on Court after an outstanding performance through the middle. Minor and reigning premiers Ellinbank continued their strong season with a 47-34 win over Bunyip to secure their place in the Grand Final. The opening minutes were fiercely contested, with both teams going goal for goal and applying pressure across the court. Ellinbank eventually created the first break and finished the quarter strongly to lead 16-10. Bunyip continued to fight hard in the second term, but Ellinbank’s defensive pressure made clean possession difficult and the Eagles stretched their advantage out to nine goals by half time. The Bulldogs refused to go away after the long break and continued to compete strongly, particularly in the defensive circle.

edfnl.org.au

Reigning premiers Neerim South booked their place in another Grand Final with a comprehensive 18-goal win over Ellinbank, extending an extraordinary unbeaten run that now stretches back to the 2024 Grand Final. The contest opened with plenty of intensity and strong defensive pressure from both sides. Neerim South’s circle defence created early opportunities and the Cats capitalised, stringing together six consecutive goals on their way to a 13-7 quartertime lead. Ellinbank responded strongly in the second, increasing their pressure across the court and disrupting Neerim South’s normally settled structure. The Eagles matched the Cats both with 10 goals for the quarter. Ellinbank came out firing after half time, briefly cutting the margin to just three as every possession became fiercely contested. Neerim South steadied under pressure, however, rebuilding their advantage to lead by seven at three-quarter time and setting up an intriguing final term. The Cats then showed exactly why they remain the competition’s benchmark. A decisive run early in the fourth pushed the margin into double figures, and from there Neerim South took control, producing their highest-scoring quarter of the match with 17 goals to six, winning comfortably in the end 50-32. Neerim South Goal Attack Kimberley Edwards was named Best on Court.

PAGE 13

Bunyip produced their best scoring quarter in the last with 10 goals, but the Eagles had already

established the decisive advantage to take the win and direct passage to Grand Final day. Ellinbank Vice Captain and Centre Cassandra Charles was named Best on Court for an influential four-quarter performance.

2026 THE FOLLOWER FINALS

NETBALL MATCH REPORT 1st SEMI FINALS There was no room for error as the EDFNL First Semi Finals took centre stage at Longwarry, with six teams keeping their premiership hopes alive and six seeing their 2026 seasons come to an end. Across the day there were tight contests, momentum swings and plenty of finals pressure as teams fought for a place in next week’s Preliminary Finals. Lang Lang and Bunyip 13&Under teams produced a hard-fought opening to the day, with both sides applying strong defensive pressure and making every possession count. The Tigers were able to settle first and gradually build an advantage, while Bunyip continued to challenge and create opportunities through the middle of the court. Lang Lang maintained their composure as the game progressed, continuing to work patiently in attack and making the most of their opportunities to secure a comfortable win by the end fo the match 33-13 and progress to the Preliminary Final. Lang Lang’s Obie K was named Best on Court, having an impact through the midcourt across the match and contributing to the Tigers’ strong four-quarter performance.

PAGE 14

Lang Lang and Bunyip played out another tight First Semi Final this time in the 15&Under age group. Little separating the sides throughout the opening half, both teams brought excellent defensive pressure and worked patiently in attack, with Lang Lang

231F20

taking a narrow 16-13 advantage into the main break. Bunyip continued to apply pressure after half time and remained within striking distance, but Lang Lang kept chipping away and showed great composure when challenged. The Tigers held firm in the final term to record a 31-26 victory and progress to the penultimate week of netball. Best on Court honours went to Lang Lang Goal Shooter, Poppy M. Poowong ended Lang Lang’s winning run for the day, holding off the Tigers in a terrific 17 & Under match to claim a 41-37 victory. The Pies started strongly to lead 12-8 at quarter time and, despite plenty of defensive pressure from both sides, maintained that four-goal advantage at the main break. Lang Lang then came firing out of half time, producing a 13-goal third quarter to close the margin to just one, setting up a huge final term with Poowong leading 31-30. Lang Lang hit the front during the final quarter, going goal for goal, with people questioning the rules around overtime. Poowong, however, responded under pressure and finished the game strongly to secure a 41-37 victory in a great game for junior aged netball. Poowong Goal Defence, Brooke O, was consistent all game and made the most of opportunities to be named Best on Court. edfnl.org.au

F04F23

Neerim South started strongly in the first of the Catani Neerim match ups in C Grade, taking a narrow 9-7 lead into quarter time before Catani responded with an excellent second term. The Blues lifted their defensive pressure, created turnovers and moved the ball cleanly through court to edge ahead 16-15 at the main break. With little separating the sides, the contest was well and truly alive at half time. The Cats took control after the break, producing a decisive 13-4 third quarter to turn the game in their favour and all but end the Blues chances. Catani continued to battle through the final term, but Neerim maintained their composure and extended the margin to record a 39-26 victory and progress into next week. Playing coach Mia Chandler was named Best on Court after an influential performance through the midcourt. Take two for Catani versus Neerim South, who were the team to settle the quickest after an even opening few minutes. The Cats using strong defensive pressure and accurate finishing established a 15-8 quarter-time advantage. Catani continued to compete hard through the second term and found more opportunities in attack, but the Cats remained composed with ball in hand and stretched their advantage to 12 goals at half time.

edfnl.org.au

A Grade was set up to be a great game between two emerging teams ready to take on the more established finals contenders. Buln Buln made the stronger start of the two, capitalising on early turnovers and converting their opportunities to establish a 12-6 quarter-time lead. Longwarry responded well in the second, finding greater fluency through court and matching the Lyrebirds goal-for-goal for much of the term. Buln Buln remained composed under pressure, however, and carried an eight-goal advantage into the main break. Longwarry continued to challenge after half time and closed the margin to five at one stage, but Buln steadied with an even 12 goal term. The Crows refusing to go away, fought hard in the final quarter, but the Lyrebirds absorbed the pressure and finished with a 45-36 victory to set up a mouthwatering match against Ellinbank. Buln Buln Coach and Centre Renee Cook was named Best on Court for the second consecutive week after another influential matching winning performance.

PAGE 15

The Blues produced a stronger quarter than their previous two after the break, scoring 11 goals and continuing to apply pressure across the court, but Neerim answered with 15 of their

own to maintain control. Catani finished strongly with a 13-goal final term, their best of the game, however the Cats had done enough to secure a 56-41 victory booking a Preliminary berth. Neerim South Goal Attack Brooke Stevens was named Best on Court after an outstanding fourquarter performance.

CATANI Hello Catani Army! No games for us today as our 17 & Under girls have booked themselves a ticket straight to the BIG DANCE! Speaking of last weekend… what a weekend it was! Saturday saw us host the Semi Final at Catani, and what an incredible day it turned out to be. The crowds came out in force, and even more of the Catani Army put their hands up to help volunteer and make the day happen. To everyone who helped set up, worked throughout the day, cooked, cleaned, supported and everything in between… THANK YOU! It simply wouldn’t have been the success it was without you. As they say, many hands make light work, and the Catani Army certainly showed up! Then it was time for our 17 & Under girls to take on Yarragon with a one-way ticket to the Grand Final on the line. And wowee… what a game!

It was stressful. It was tense. There may have been a few very nervous coaches and supporters on the sidelines! But our girls held their nerve, dug deep and came away with the win! GRAND FINAL BOUND! A huge congratulations to Miley Warde, who was awarded Best on Court by the umpires. What a performance! SUNDAY | LONGWARRY The following day, we had three teams back on court at Longwarry. A huge congratulations to our Under 18 footballers, C Grade and B Grade netballers on an incredible season. Unfortunately, their finals campaigns have now come to an end, but we couldn’t be prouder of what each team has achieved. Getting this far is an incredible effort, and the commitment, determination and fight shown throughout the season has been nothing short of fantastic. You should all be incredibly proud. LET’S GO BLUES!

PAGE 34

The Catani girls came out firing, taking a five-goal lead into quarter time. Yarragon came charging back after half time and levelled the scores, turning the game into a nail-biting, goal-for-goal battle. edfnl.org.au

LONGWARRY

A massive congratulations to our Reserves and Seniors, who both came away with incredible wins on Saturday and have officially booked their spots in the Grand Final! Both sides have earned themselves a well-deserved week off before turning their attention to the big one next weekend. Unfortunately, our A Grade girls’ season came to an end on Sunday in the 1st Semi Final. While it wasn’t the result we were hoping for, we are incredibly proud of the season they have put together and everything they have achieved along the way. Hold your heads high, girl, you’ve done yourselves and the club proud. A huge thank you also goes to everyone who helped us host Sunday’s finals. What an incredible day it was for the club, and thanks to so many people putting their hands up and chipping in, everything ran so smoothly. Thankfully, the weather looked after us too and helped make it a great day all round. There may be no Crows taking the field this weekend, but all eyes are now firmly on what lies ahead…

GRAND FINAL WEEK!

Our Reserves and Seniors will both be playing for a premiership next weekend, and we cannot wait to see the Longwarry community get behind them. Enjoy the week off, Crows. Next week, we go one more time!

GO CROWS!

TRAFALGAR Preliminary final day and we are down to 1 team, our Seniors, as our last chance for a spot on Grand Final day. Although we couldn’t quite get the result we were after in the semi, by performing strongly through the year gave as the double chance and here we are today up against Neerim again. We can’t wait to get back on the park and bounce back with a solid performance and hopefully get another crack at Longwarry in the big one. Good luck to Punky and the boys. Unfortunately our U16’s couldn’t quite get the job done last weekend but they certainly gave it their best shot. From a team with only 15-16 players before the season, they banded together and recruited a few more boys to make finals - well done on an outstanding season and congratulations to Beno, Liam, Heath and all the support crew. As mentioned last week we halos had our Reserves and Under 18’s reach the finals so to have all 4 footy teams involved at the business end of the season is a fantastic effort.

What a year 2026 has been for the Yarragon Football Netball Club! This season marked an exciting new chapter for Yarragon Football Netball Club, as the Club enjoyed its first full year in the new clubrooms and facilities at Dowton Park. After many years of planning and hard work from so many people, it has been fantastic to see players, members, supporters, volunteers and the wider community making the most of the Club’s new home. On the football side, Yarragon welcomed Senior Coach Troy Hemming to the Club for the 2026 season. The Club is incredibly grateful for the contribution of Troy, along with all football and netball coaches, assistant coaches, team managers and support staff across every grade. The time, effort and commitment that goes into preparing and supporting teams each week is significant, and their contribution has played an important role in the season. There have been plenty of achievements to celebrate throughout 2026. The Club recognised an incredible 18 player game milestones across football and netball, celebrating the commitment and loyalty of those who have continued to proudly represent Yarragon in the black, white and teal.

edfnl.org.au

The Club is especially proud of its Under 17 and Under 13 netball sides, who earned their places in the 2026 finals. Their finals appearances are a fantastic reward for the hard work and commitment shown by the players, coaches and support teams throughout the season, and the Club looks forward to seeing both teams proudly represent Yarragon throughout their finals campaigns. While wins, milestones and individual achievements are always wonderful to celebrate, community football and netball clubs are about so much more than what happens on the field and court. Volunteers continue to be at the heart of Yarragon Football Netball Club. Countless hours are contributed throughout the season, both behind the scenes and on game day, to ensure the Club can continue to operate and provide opportunities for its players and community. From the canteen, bar and gate to timekeeping, scoring, setting up, packing up, cooking, cleaning, team management and events, the contribution of volunteers across every area of the Club is invaluable. Yarragon FNC is extremely fortunate to have such a dedicated group of people who continue to give their time to

the Club. The ongoing support of the Club’s valued sponsors is equally important. Their generosity provides vital support to Yarragon’s football and netball programs and assists the Club in continuing to provide opportunities for junior and senior players while maintaining a strong and welcoming environment for members, supporters and the wider community. The Club is incredibly appreciative of the businesses and organisations that continue to get behind the Panthers each year. One of the greatest strengths of Yarragon Football Netball Club continues to be the people behind it. From the youngest junior players through to the senior teams, coaches, volunteers, sponsors, members and supporters, there is a strong sense of community that extends well beyond the scoreboard. As the Club reflects on 2026, there is certainly plenty to be proud of. However, the end of one season also signals the beginning of preparations for the next. Behind the scenes, planning for 2027 is already ramping up, with work underway across football, netball and the broader Club as Yarragon looks to continue building for the future. Bring on 2027. Go Panthers!

PAGE 43

Another highlight was celebrating four Senior Football debuts throughout the season. Providing opportunities for players to step into senior football is an important part of the continued development of Yarragon’s football program and

an exciting achievement for each of the players involved. There was also plenty to celebrate on the netball court, including two outstanding individual goalscoring achievements. One Senior netballer and one Junior netballer each reached the impressive milestone of 500 goals for the season.
