would've thought the sequel would be just as good as the original?"

Oak Park claimed back-to-back Airport Toyota Women’s Premier Division premierships winning a one-point thriller over Aberfeldie at Windy Hill.

It was a rematch of the 2023 grand final with Oak Park this time entering the match with winning form over Abers

Conditions at a picturesque Windy Hill were perfect for footy and the stage was set for an evenly poised decider.

Play stayed between the arcs in the early stages with neither side able to find much space in a high-pressure contest.

It was Oak Park who drew first blood through repeat Emily Findlay efforts ending with a lovely left-foot snap six minutes into the contest.

Taylor Moss would equalise after a free kick a few minutes later making it a goal for her in both grand finals against Oak Park.

Star forward Alex Quigley stamped her authority on the game with a strong mark

lead at the first change.

Tamsyn Kirk provided headaches for Aberfeldie, looming dangerously inside 50 for the Kangaroos.

Kirk kicked two goals in the term and created contests, while almost adding a third to her tally

Stephanie Normington-Dickens was crafty to slot a third goal for Oak Park to make it three goals to one in the quarter.

The Kangaroos took a three-goal lead into the main break leaving plenty of work for Abers to do.

Remarkably, the Kangaroos would not score for the rest of the game with Aberfeldie dominating the second half

The two blues controlled the territory, were well set up defensively, and peppered the goal face.

With just a minute left in the third term, for all their dominance, they hadn’t affected the scoreboard in a major way with four behinds added.

Chloe Rafferty proved to be a difference maker in the game when thrust forward and after being awarded a free kick at the top of the goal square, she kicked a goal right before the three quarter time siren.

Eight points was the margin heading into the final quarter with the Kangaroos wanting to defend the crown, and Abers hoping to break through after consecutive grand final defeats.

Neither team was giving an inch to begin the term before Trilby Sheppard was caught holding the ball in front of goal, with Emily Heaney slotting it to bring the margin within a kick with less than 12 minutes to play.

The ball was camped inside Abers’ forward half but they couldn’t break through for a major, a behind to Lyra Veniegas with a minute and a half left the only score.

It was a tale of two halves as Oak Park hung on to go back to back, the first senior women’s side to win consecutive EDFL grand finals.

Aberfeldie’s Rafferty was awarded best on ground with a strong second half helping turn the tide for her side after moving from defence to attack.

It was a strong team performance for Oak Park with skipper Maggie Styles named their best.

Mikayla Barnes, Shanel Camilleri, Kirk, Normington-Dickens, and Rhianna Nunn were also among the best with each Oak Park player winning key moments when they had to.

Veniegas was important for Aberfeldie on a wing, with Lily Bateman, Emily Smith, Danielle Angley, and Emma Tatti also named in their best

Abers made some moves to get back into the game with Smith moving up to a wing and Erica Markesich around and behind the footy, but Oak Park were able to outlast their onslaught.

Greenvale have booked their spot in the finals, defeating Aberfeldie by 35 points at Clifton Park.

Going into the game, the Jets needed the four points to guarantee their spot in the finals and the win now sees them finish fifth and return to finals action.

After an early stalemate which saw Abers take a two point lead into the first change, the Jets dominated the final three quarters kicking nine goals to Aberfeldie’s three to run away with the victory.

Daniel Micevski and Callum Di Pietro did the damage up forward for the Jets with three and two goals respectively, while Will Madden put in a solid performance.

Despite not having much to play for, Jack Middleton and Luke Davis fought hard all day and were both among Abers' best

The two sides will now face off again next Sunday to keep their season alive

y

season with momentum defeating East Keilor by 110 points at Lebanon Reserve.

Despite not holding any ramifications for finals, Saturday’s game was the perfect tune up for next week and showed that Nick Ash’s side will take some beating in the final month of footy.

The game was over inside the first quarter with the home side piling on nine first-quarter goals to open up a 49-point lead, before finishing with 11 second-half goals to cruise to another comfortable victory.

Amin Naim's stunning form continued with the youngster kicking five goals for the third time this year, while Kyle Weightman and Callum Clinnick starred with three goals each

Despite another difficult day, Peter Barbopoulos backed up last week’s performance with another two goals while reigning Reynolds Medallist Matty Dennis finished the year strongly

Strathmore will now gear up for a qualifying final against Pascoe Vale on Saturday, with Keilor awaiting the victor.

Pascoe Vale have come from behind late to defeat Airport West by two points at Raeburn Reserve.

Despite needing a win and other results to go their way, the loss now means the Eagles won’t feature in finals footy and will finish the year in sixth spot on the ladder with seven wins.

The game was evenly poised for most of the first three quarters with scores level at half time, and Pascoe Vale with their noses in front by four at the final change.

The Eagles dominated the early stages of the final term with five behinds and two goals inside the first 10 minutes to open up a 13point lead.

The Panthers got the margin back to a single point with two goals in as many minutes before Airport West extended their lead to eight points when they goaled at the 17minute mark.

Another three behinds for the Eagles followed before Pascoe Vale kicked two goals at the 28 and 30-minute mark of the game to seal the victory as Airport West were left to rue missed opportunities with nine behinds in the fourth quarter

Ahmed Saad continued his fine form with six goals, while Adam Figliola and Matthew Watson starred once again with two goals each to help their side snatch victory

Despite going down, Anthony Aloi and Luca Muratore finished the season strongly with two goals each while Flynn Gentile was dominant in his first game of EDFL footy for the year.

Pascoe Vale will now go into a blockbuster qualifying final against Strathmore next Saturday with the winner to take on ladder leaders Keilor in two weeks' time.

Keilor have recorded win 17 for the year, defeating Essendon Doutta Stars by 61 points at Nipper Jordan Oval.

The win caps off an almost perfect home and away season for Mick McGuane’s men with

the Blues picking up 68 of a possible 72 premiership points.

Surprisingly, the Stars jumped out to a fourpoint quarter time lead, however it was oneway traffic from then on with Keilor kicking five goals in the second and third terms to record another comfortable victory.

Corey Ellis made a successful return for the Blues while Chris Kosmas and Matthew Bartlett both finished the regular season on a high with strong performances.

Despite going down, Douttas fought hard all day with Liam Ryan, Darcy Runting, and Angus Murray all showing plenty of positive signs heading into 2025.

Keilor will put their feet up and will wait for the winner of Strathmore and Pascoe Vale on Saturday week.

Deer Park have ended their season on a high defeating Avondale Heights by 116 points at Canning Reserve.

Saturday’s win was Jamie Madigan’s side’s seventh victory for the year and sees them finish seventh on the ladder in their first season in Premier Division.

The win was set up in the first quarter with the visitors piling on seven goals before quarter time before finishing strongly with 10 goals in the last term to cruise to a triplefigure victory

Jackson Barling’s superb end to the season continued with the forward kicking five goals for the first time this year to back up his bag of four from last week, while Nicolas Aleksovski and Jack Dorgan both had solid games with four goals each.

STRATHMORE COMMUNITY BANK DIVISION ONE

West Coburg recorded an outstanding win over Hillside in the qualifying final by 20 points to set up a date with Maribyrnong Park.

The Burgers started off slowly trailing by 10 points at quarter time and three points at

half time, before a strong second half saw them secure a hard-fought victory following a tense final quarter

Ibby Taha was once again crucial for West Coburg up front kicking four goals, while Patrick McCallum and skipper Dane Lucas were also immense.

Hillside’s star forward Josh Covelli provided one of the highlights of the day when he slotted goal 100 of the season, finishing the match with five majors.

Hillside led during the last quarter but some late West Coburg goals pushed the lead out. Ultimately though, it was a strong effort for Hillside who have the double chance next weekend and will know they're not far off.

Hillside play St Albans in a semi final next week, while West Coburg takes on Maribyrnong Park for a spot in the decider.

St Albans claimed a hard-fought victory over Oak Park on Sunday by 14 points to keep their season alive, and win their first senior men's final in 14 years.

It was Oak Park who started strong to take a lead into the first change, but St Albans kicked into gear from there.

The Saints' inaccuracy kept the door open for Oak Park who only added 14 points through quarters two and three.

With 52 seconds left in the third quarter, the forecasted storms swept through and players were forced off due to lightning.

Play resumed 38 minutes later with the fourth quarter to play out as usual.

Trailing by 21 points upon the restart, the Kangaroos had to come out swinging and that's exactly what they did kicking the first three goals to be within a kick.

The game went back and forth before the Saints sealed the game.

Bol Kolang was huge up front scoring four goals, three of which in that final term.

Victor Micallef put in a huge performance alongside Josh Klaromenos and Matt Gundry

STRATHMORE COMMUNITY BANK DIVISION TWO

Taylors Lakes claimed an 11-point victory over Burnside Heights in a high-scoring thriller to book their spot at Windy Hill.

The Bears were running hot to start the contest kicking five unanswered to quarter time.

A brilliant second quarter from the Lions, however, saw them steal back the lead by half time, which they ultimately had by the end of the game.

It ebbed and flowed all day despite the Bears losing some key cogs early in the game.

It was Burnside's third loss against Taylors Lakes this season and once again there wasn’t much to separate the two sides.

The Bears looked to have the Lions' measure early on, but a spirited Taylors Lakes fightback proved too strong for Burnside in the end.

Burnside lives to fight another day and will take on Westmeadows in the preliminary final, while Taylors Lakes head straight to the grand final.

Westmeadows won a one-point nail biter against Northern Saints to continue their season another week.

The Tigers were down by 42 points at quarter time with the Saints maximising the breeze, but fought their way back across the four quarters to claim one of the best wins of the season.

It was all Westmeadows after quarter time and although a lightning delay temporarily halted their momentum, it didn't stop the Tigers from claiming their first senior men's finals win in 14 years.

It was a heartbreaking result for the Northern Saints who looked to be in complete control at quarter time but fell away across the remainder of the game culminating in a shock one-point loss.

In 2019, Oak Park was relegated from Division One after a one-win season.

For a club that qualified for the Premier Division grand final in 2011, it completed a dramatic slide to the Essendon District Football League's third tier.

But under the leadership of premiership player, flag-winning coach, and former Williamstown VFL assistant Todd Clark, the Kangaroos have bounced back with vigour

After claiming the Division Two flag last year, Oak Park – like all promoted clubs – set survival as its top priority this year.

But after a patchy start in the hotly contested Division One competition, the Kangaroos rallied to finish fifth with nine wins in the home-and-away campaign, two-and-a-half games clear of sixth-ranked Craigieburn. They enjoyed a six-game winning run between rounds 11-17 to emphatically stamp their spot in finals, toppling Moonee Valley, Craigieburn, Roxburgh Park, Keilor Park, Tullamarine, and Rupertswood

Oak Park's season ended with a plucky 14point defeat to St Albans in Sunday's elimination final, but a quick glance at history underlines the enormity of their achievement.

The Kangaroos are the first senior men's side to contest Division One finals the year after promotion since the EDFL reintroduced three divisions over a decade ago. Airport West achieved the feat in Premier Division in 2013.

Clark, who had no hesitation in declaring his team had exceeded expectations this season, said the club was determined to avoid a dose of "second-year blues" and get busy over summer.

"We've seen that and we've been very wary of that If we don't get out there and are bullish to get the players we want, then it's a danger certainly," Clark said.

"You're never going to get everything you want, but hopefully we can get some (players) in. The core is there and that's the beauty, and we said after the game obviously on Sunday that we were proud of the season and we were brave.

"But we're not going to hang our hat on that. "The players are really driving it and saying, 'We need some people coming in '

"If we sit back on our heels, we're kidding ourselves."

Clark said Oak Park had assembled the right group to take them forward.

He said his players were hungry to continue to improve as the Kangaroos look to add depth to their list, while also bolstering their keyposition stocks.

"Getting out of Division Two, there was a couple of hurdles along the way with COVID (2020), the season being cut short (2021), and then Keilor Park just dominating (2022)," Clark said.

"Last year, we were pretty much thinking if we can't move up this year, then players start thinking if they want to improve their footy somewhere else so that (winning the Division Two premiership) was tick number one and now they want to keep growing and keep playing against these good sides to measure themselves as a team.

"Our focus is, as with most off-seasons, just a couple of key posts to support – down back and forward and potentially a ruck.

"But they're not cheap, those guys. So you've got to try and manage your group to see if it can work."

Oak Park's impressive season has already had a positive impact on its bid to strengthen its list

"Probably your best recruiters are your players. The one thing for us moving forward is because of the showing we did this year, we're starting to get people (coming) our way, asking, 'Can we have a chat' versus the other way," Clark said.

"That's one of the advantages of being able to make the finals and show that we weren't just in there to survive.

"It's bloody hard to recruit Division Two footballers, so we need to keep pushing through with that.

"They're as close off the field as on the field, which is pleasing to coach."

The Kangaroos landed an influential set of recruits.

Clark described them as "good club people" and added: "If you get on your own pedestal, you get knocked off it pretty quick "

Oak Park was forced to make changes after losing several members of the previous year's premiership-winning team, but it appears in good shape with stars Max Gleeson, Taylor Hotchkin, Jedd Taylor, and Lachlan Ronaldson also at their disposal.

"The essence of our group is local. Probably 60-70 per cent of them have played under 12s at Oak Park and all the way through," Clark said.

"Even getting Kane O'Halloran (65 goals in 2024) and Rory MacGregor from Therry, they played juniors with these guys at Oak Park as well You can't buy 60, 70 games of playing together."

While Maribyrnong Park, West Coburg, Hillside, and St Albans – the predicted top contenders pre-season – remain in the flag race, the Kangaroos proved themselves as the clear fifth best team and have laid a platform for future success.

"For a lot of our players, it wasn't that daunting for them," Clark said.

"Obviously there's bigger bodies and the speed of the game and so on, but I think they all adjusted well

"We knew that the first half of the year was going to be finding our feet and we always thought we'd have a better second half, again with the draw opening up. The top four sides were pretty hard to get, which has been proven.

"In the second half of the year, they kept going and our injury list wasn't too bad. Missing Lachie Ronaldson for the final, he'd been in superb form, so he was a bit of a loss But otherwise we were pretty much where we were at

"No one looked like a fish out of water playing their role. They really, really enjoyed the challenge of it, coming from Division Two, where you can dominate and get some lazy habits and so on.

"They relished the contest and they were the ones who were really confident that we could push (teams)."

OAK PARK: EMBRACING

PREMIER DIVISION

Pascoe Vale will take on Strathmore with Keilor awaiting the winner when they face off in a blockbuster qualifying final at Greenvale Recreation Reserve.

The two neighbours once again find themselves at the pointy end of the ladder, however it was the Panthers who had the better home and away season notching up 15 wins including two against the Mores, while Strathmore managed 13 victories for the year.

Earlier in the year, Pascoe Vale scored two big wins against the rivals winning by 30 points back in Round 2 and 60 points in Round 11.

Matthew Watson did the damage for the Panthers in both of their games against Strathmore this year with the veteran kicking five goals across the two games and will be one to look at for at Section Road on Saturday.

Fortunately for the Mores, youngster Matthew Foley has qualified for finals and will take on the Panthers this weekend.

The 20-year-old has had a year to remember aking out Essendon VFL’s rising star award

black.

After not featuring in his side’s two games against the Panther’s this year, the young gun should provide a huge boost that could see his side come away with the win.

Aberfeldie will take on Greenvale in a do or die elimination final at Piranha Park on Sunday.

The Jets only just scraped into finals, while it's been an up and down year for Abers who've done enough to return to September action.

When the two sides met back in Round 11, it was Abers who claimed the four points winning by 25 points at Section Road, before the Jets got their revenge last weekend winning by 35 points to secure a finals berth.

For Greenvale to get over the line on Saturday, Josh Porter will need to play a huge role once again.

The forward has been in fine form throughout 2024 and was dominant against Keilor and East Keilor kicking six goals in both games

After a relatively quiet game last week, the sharpshooter will be hoping to make amends this week to ensure his side’s season extends.

For Abers, vice-captain Ben Ronke will need to lead from the front once again if Abers want to come away with the win.

The prized recruit has stood tall and has had an excellent season kicking at least one goal in every game bar one.

Another dominant display should ensure Abers feature in the second week of the finals.

STRATHMORE COMMUNITY BANK DIVISION ONE

Maribyrnong Park takes on West Coburg in a qualifying final at Joe Brown Oval this Saturday to book the first spot in the grand final.

The two sides have faced off twice this year during the home and away season.

The first occasion was back in Round 1 and was a 16-point victory for West Coburg, while the second and most recent meeting was in Round 17 in a match that Marby Park convincingly won by 79 points.

Alex Barba, Matthew Gaul, and Lachie Plowman were all instrumental in Marby’s victory in that game and will be players West Coburg will want to keep quiet this weekend.

West Coburg are coming off a hard fought 20-point victory over Hillside in last week's qualifying final.

The game was close all day but the Burgers held firm to push away late.

They will be tested once again this weekend against an opponent who well and truly had their measure last time out, so they'll need to be at their best if they're to head to a third straight grand final

Hillside takes on St Albans at Joe Brown Oval this Sunday in an elimination final, with the winner set to head to a preliminary final

Hillside are coming off a 20-point loss to West Coburg in last week's qualifying final and will be looking to avoid a straight sets exit

St Albans are coming off a 14-point victory over Oak Park in the elimination final last week

where inaccuracy nearly came back to haunt them.

St Albans will need a much improved effort in front of goal if they are to defeat Hillside.

The two sides have faced off just the one time so far this season back in Round 12, in a match that Hillside were victorious in by 29 points.

Captain Anthony Prestia was huge in that encounter scoring three goals and gathering plenty of the ball and will be someone St Albans keep a close eye on this week.

STRATHMORE COMMUNITY BANK DIVISION TWO

Burnside Heights will take on Westmeadows for a spot in the grand final at Salesian College with Taylors Lakes waiting for the winner at Windy Hill.

It was a dramatic first week of the finals for both sides with Burnside going down to Taylors Lakes by 11 points after leading during the early stages of the fourth quarter, while Westmeadows came from behind late to knock off Northern Saints in the lightningdelayed elimination final.

When the two sides met earlier in the year, it was the Bears who convincingly won their first match by 59 points, before the Tigers turned it around later in the year to defeat the Bears by 16 points

The battle between the forward lines looms as the deciding factor on Saturday

For the Bears, Daniel Hovey (expected to return) and Nick Gregson have been in fine form all year with 95 goals between them, while for the Tigers both Aaron Evans and Rex Hickman have had fantastic years with 33 and 32 goals respectively

Both defences will have their work cut out for them on Saturday

Burnside Heights were depleted in last week's final and will have to make some changes, but they proved last week they're not to be counted out.

Local footy has been quite the journey for Brodie Holland.

Since hanging up the boots back in 2008 after 11 seasons at the top level, the former Collingwood and Fremantle small forward has just about done it all at suburban level.

It all started when the Tasmanian was fresh out of the AFL system and played a key role in Maribyrnong Park’s two premierships in 2009 and 2010 as a playing coach.

After another four years at the Lions, Holland decided to take a break from football at the end of 2014 before being sounded out by the EDFL three years later to coach the senior interleague team for the 2017 season.

Following a successful stint with Caroline Springs, when Ben Hart moved to an assistant coaching role at GWS at the end of the 2022 season, Holland was at the top of President Whitlam Malkoun’s list to lead the Northern Bullants in 2023.

Soon enough, Holland wanted to get back to suburban level and Marby has always felt like home.

It seemed like the obvious choice to move back to a club that he’d had a great deal of success with and fortunately, they were

looking for a coach after they’d just been relegated.

“I always had Marby in mind to come back to,” Holland remarked

“I just had such great memories and a great experience at the football club.

“I had a really challenging year at the Bullants last year, finishing second bottom winning only two games.

“I was pretty keen to do something a little bit more relaxed in the footy industry from a coaching point of view.

“Marby’s job was coming up, so I just thought it was a no brainer, I live three minutes around the corner, the kids play juniors there."

At the end of 2023 when Holland walked through the doors at Marby for the first time since 2014 as coach, there was an overwhelming sense of optimism

Despite a difficult year that saw them finish on the bottom of the ladder and their stint in Premier Division come to an end, Holland knew the club was still in a really good position.

“I was really surprised that they got relegated based on the games that I watched because I.

BRODIE HOLLAND: LEADING THE CHARGE

thought that they were really competitive for three quarters against really good teams.

“They were a really young group that probably just needed to be tweaked a little bit defensively from a playing point of view and some experience needed to be added in just to help those kids.

“I was really excited that we would be more competitive in Division One and the team I came and watched was unlucky with injury and the younger players just didn’t know how to win.

“I thought even with the current group, without even recruiting we were potentially going to be in the top couple of teams in Division One.

When Holland took over, exposing youth to senior footy was something the club was always going to do

While some might have found it a challenge to sacrifice winning games in the short term over giving opportunity to youngsters, the veteran coach has been able to play the kids without the fear of costing them valuable premiership points.

“There were a lot of good quality kids that had already had experience at Premier, so coming back and playing a role in Division One is something that they’ve stepped back in and done fairly well

“It’s given me flexibility and freedom to go and play those kids knowing that I can win games of footy with youth in the team and give them three or four games and see if they are up to it.

“There’s a couple of guys that have come in late in the year like (Sam) Calleri and Jai Brinkkotter that spent most of the year in the twos and still qualified for the twos (finals) this weekend, but they’ve been an integral part of the team in the seniors and kicked seven goals between them last week against Hillside.

“Max Griffin has had a great season to date, he’s done incredibly well, Zach Coughlan has come in as an Under 18 player and is improving

every week in the back line as a rebounding intercept marking player.

"Will Ryan and Ned Ryan have been rock solid and Will especially seems to be getting better every week.

“That’s what a lot of people don’t realise – I think we’ve got six or seven players every week that have an average age of 20.”

Even though 2024 has seen Marby’s resurgence to the top of the Division One ladder, the year certainly hasn’t been without its challenges.

The side lost two of its first four to formidable opponents with questions being asked if the side would be able to challenge for the premiership in its first season in the second tier competition, but have since won 12 on the trot

“I thought we were just really off against West Coburg early and we didn’t adjust to the size of the ground well.

“The St Albans one was a funny one because we’d had the bye leading into that. It was something that I’d never done before, I gave the players two sessions off leading into that game as a bit of a trial.

“I just like felt we didn’t train well coming back the next week after the bye

“I think that game there was a bit of a turning point for us. We said, 'We’re not training well enough, we’re not committing to certain aspects of our preparation' and we tweaked a few things and the leadership group had a strong chat to the playing group and our training standards went through the roof.

“I reckon it was the best thing that happened to us this year losing that game If we had've won it, maybe we would’ve kept sailing and doing things the same way

With a month of footy left to play, the signs look good at Marby and Holland certainly has to take a lot of credit for their resurgence.

A pair of victories will be the ultimate reward for a proud club looking to return to the top flight.
