MEN’S DIVISION ONE & TWO FINALS THIRDS GRAND FINALS
August 23-25, 2024
y finally claimed the Airport Toyota Women's Division One premiership
After winning the minor premiership the past two years before falling short in the grand final, the Jets were hoping history wouldn’t repeat itself this year.
Like the last two years, the Jets were the first team through to the grand final and had a week off before the game
Their opponent in the grand final this time round, was minor premiers Burnside Heights, which was also aiming for its first ever women’s premiership.
It was a high scoring women’s grand final with both teams having some really good patches of play in a tough contested game.
The Bears led by a goal at quarter time before the Jets kicked the first four goals of the second quarter.
A goal after the siren to the Bears made the margin 13 points at half time.
It was goal for goal in the third quarter. y quarter before the Bears kicked a goal after a 50 metre penalty nearly 11 minutes into the quarter to reduce the margin to a goal
The Bears tried everything to get a goal to leave the scores, but with no success.
A point with a minute to go for the Jets was enough to seal an 8.4 (52) - 7.3 (45) win and the premiership.
Jets coach Troy Newton said he couldn’t be prouder of the group
“We had to work for it,” he told Star Weekly. “It was a tough game, a hard game and the players just never stopped.
“One of our mantras during the week was playing every contest and every second and that is what it took, couldn’t be prouder and happier for the players the way they played and they played out the full game ”
The game was set up in the second quarter when the Jets kicked four goals to one.
Newton said it was the type of football they want to be playing on a consistent basis.
“An awesome quarter and I think I said to the side that it’s probably the best quarter we’ve played all year,” he said.
“That’s the sort of brand of football that you know, we want to play and we know we can play at times
“It’s very hard to play it against such a good side in Burnside but it was the difference and it was awesome to watch.”
Newton said there were a few nerves in the last quarter as the Bears came hard, but he had the confidence in his group to get it done.
“We trained a lot, we trained for this situation,” he said “I had confidence we could do what we needed to.
“It probably got a bit close for my liking, but again the players are just so good and they deserve all the credit.”
Talia Motta and Alisa Magri kicked three goals each for the Jets. Magri took several big hits in the game, but continued to fight on until the end
“Sometimes she just gets judged on goals, but she has a lot more than that for our side,” Newton said.
Kiara Delia had a strong game in the middle of the ground and set up a lot of the Jets forays forward and was one of the standouts on the ground.
Having been an emergency for North Melbourne’s Victorian Football League women’s premiership team, she’s had a big few weeks.
“She’s an awesome player,” Newton said. She’s had a bit of a tough season with North Melbourne.
“She comes back down to Greenvale when she needs to and she’s just awesome around the group and she puts in like that every game
“You can never question her effort and desperation, she was inspirational.”
Teaghan Brand had a number of good marks late in the game, Sophie Pettman provided
plenty of run forward, while Grace Matser had a good battle with Holly McGregor in the ruck.
Bears coach Michael Davis said they didn’t take their chances when they were there
“In the last quarter we had enough inside 50s and we didn’t take our chances,” he told Star Weekly.
“I’m extremely proud of them. To get within seven points of winning the whole competition, is something to be proud of.
“That second group of players have gotten better and the stars have been phenomenal ”
Kayla Ravanello kicked three goals for the Bears, while Bella Negri kicked two.
Krissy Trang, Holly McGregor and Payton-Ani Ozols were named the best.
Trang was awarded the best on ground medal after getting her side going in the middle of the ground in the second half
Davis said Trang, who has won two league best and fairest awards, keeps getting better.
“She is an inspirational leader and person,” he said.
“She started the season slowly before getting into her groove
“She works harder than everyone else from her team and the opposition.”
The win means the Jets will be promoted into premier division for next season.
Newton said they weren’t worried about that at the moment.
“I just want to celebrate it with the players because some of them have been through the heartbreaks with the losses and that’s why this one is so special.”
g g p battle of the lions winning the Airport Toyota Women’s Division Two premiership.
Districts and Sunbury Lions were the top two sides all season and were destined to meet on the big stage
With both teams looking for maiden premiership success in the EDFL, there was bound to be plenty of emotion and determination expelled across the afternoon and a tough, contested game is what ensued.
Sunbury controlled territory for the majority of the opening term but couldn’t capitalise on the scoreboard.
Just one behind was added to Sunbury by quarter time with Coburg Districts scoreless
Jacinta Brew broke the stalemate 13 minutes into the second quarter turning on the jets and running into the open goal for the first major of the afternoon.
Both sides threatened the scoreboard to end the first half but to no avail with Districts leading by a straight kick at the main break.
pp y
the second half before Sunbury’s Jessica LaFontaine reduced the two points with a goal midway through the third.
The stage was set with the margin just one point heading into the last
Districts had fought through finals heartbreak in years gone by and Sunbury had battled through injury.
It was Districts who stood up in the final quarter and controlled destiny kicking the first goal five minutes in through Maria Carbone.
The next score would come from Helena Katsios after a 50 metre penalty which put her on the goal line and all but sealed the win
Sunbury had some chances late but couldn’t convert in a major way.
Districts skipper Liv Woods was awarded the best on ground medal for a dominant display in the ruck capping off yet another outstanding season.
Amanda Thompson and Giuseppina Tarantello were among the best, as well as Harmoni Chivell and Chiara Chiavaroli.
Sunbury skipper Emily Taylor fought valiantly through a broken finger sustained in last week’s preliminary final, while young gun Emma Quarrell was important for her side.
Matt Tremellen and the Sunbury Lions will go again next year as they look for more continuity with their side.
It was success first up for Gavan WrayMcCann who’ll be looking for more as Coburg Districts head into Airport Toyota Women’s Division One.

GRAND FINAL PREVIEW
By Tara Murray
It’s round two for Oak Park and Aberfeldie as they do battle in the Airport Toyota Women's Premier Division grand final for a second straight year.
After an absolute thriller last season, neutral fans will be hoping for the same this Saturday
For much of the season, it didn’t seem like we would see the same teams back again
Hillside was the team to beat and got wins on the board against both sides, but Abers showed the Sharks were beatable late in the season.
Both the Kangaroos and then Abers had impressive wins in the finals against the Sharks to set up another grand final clash.
For the Kangaroos, their only two losses this season came against the Sharks, the last of them in a Round 10 thriller.
In the front third, the Kangaroos had the best scoring rate in the competition, scoring nearly 200 more points than the next best team.
While Alex Quigley still leads the way for the Kangaroos, the side has been able to add some more depth and other options in front of goal.
They’ve had more of a spread of goal kickers, which has seen them score 252 points more during the regular season than last season
In the middle of the ground the Kangaroos got stronger with Chiara Guarino crossing from Strathmore.
Already one of the best players in the competition, she has added a point of difference to the Kangaroos group.
Leah Spargo, who was at Keilor, is another that adds flexibility and depth to what the Kangaroos want to do.
Defensively, only Hillside conceded less goals. Only four times this season has the Kangaroos conceded four or more goals in a game.
Two have been against Aberfeldie, but they’ve been able to do enough offensively to still get the job done on both occasions
There’s been real stability in the group this season. Majority of last season’s premiership team returned.
Fifteen players from the premiership side played in the side’s semi final win against Hillside. This will help with nerves and standing up under pressure and they know how to get the job done
For Abers, they continue to show why they have one of the strongest women’s programs in the competition.
They won in 2019, before losses in 2022 and 2023. Four players from that 2019 premiership played in last week’s win.
Abers are yet to beat the Kangaroos this season, but we know that meant little last year when the tables were turned.
The first of the match ups was in Round 1 when Abers was finding their feet, the other had plenty of scoring which was different from the match ups last season.
The side took a while to get going this season. A number of players had gone and played VFLW, while there was a focus on giving some of those younger players an opportunity.
About 10 players from last season’s grand final side played in the preliminary final team this year, showing how vastly different the group is
The group started to settle and their VFLW players then came back into the mix.
Coach Rob Green said you could see the extra confidence in the likes of Ellie Huggard, who had won last season’s league best and fairest award, coming back into the side.
She has been named in Abers' best in all six games, having been in the best all but one game last season.
As the group came together, it meant Abers' last loss was back in Round 8 against the Kangaroos.
They’ve built from that moment on and were impressive in both their finals.
Former Collingwood player Emily Smith has embraced the culture at Abers and has been one of their stars.
She kicked three in the preliminary final and can play in a number of different positions
Ashleigh Gunn is another who has fitted into the side.
It’s been a real team effort for Abers. Their reserves side is playing off in a second grand final, while the under-18.5s are playing in their third grand final.
For the grand final, it is one of those games which is a genuine 50-50
Oak Park will go in favourites having not lost to Abers this season, but both sides have a lot of pros in the pros and cons list.
The first grand final was a brilliant game of footy, expect this one to be as well.

DIVISION ONE
The finals start with West Coburg and Hillside kicking off Strathmore Community Bank Division One action at Greenvale Recreation Reserve this Saturday.
The Burgers go into the finals series in good form having won their final regular season match by 108 points and four out of their last five by over 60 points.
The two sides faced off twice in the season, once in Round 2 where Hillside were victorious in a thrilling match that was decided by just three points, and also in Round 13 where West Coburg got revenge, defeating Hillside by 33 points.
From these past games it is clear that if both teams are at their best, it will be a cracking contest
Hillside will go into the qualifying final having lost their last game of the season to Maribyrnong Park by 50 points.
While this doesn’t sound great for their form and confidence, they did a better job against
prior.
Josh Covelli will be the one to watch for a number of reasons with the star forward two goals away from triple figures, but he was also the one to break the game open in the first meeting between these two sides.
He proved unstoppable in the final quarter and lifted the Sharks to a stirring win.
The winner will meet Marby for a spot in the decider, with the loser to face the winner out of the eliminator
St Albans will take on Oak Park in an elimination final at Salesian College Oval on Sunday.
St Albans go into this weekend's final with a far superior home and away record as they lost just the four matches across the season and have won four of their last five leading into this week's match.
The two sides faced off twice in the home and away season with St Albans coming out on top both times.
First in Round 5 by 39 points and more recently last week where the Saints won by 22 points.
In both those games, Josh Carter scored four goals and is someone Oak Park will need to pay close attention to this weekend
Oak Park head into the match as underdogs as they finished fifth on the ladder after the regular season and are yet to defeat a team ranked higher than them.
However, the Oakers have won six of their last seven games and head into the finals in good touch despite a loss to the Saints last week.
STRATHMORE COMMUNITY BANK DIVISION TWO
The Division Two finals kick off this Saturday with Taylors Lakes taking on Burnside Heights at Salesian College Oval for a spot in the grand final.
Taylors Lakes finished the season in first place with an almost flawless home and away record which saw them lose just one game, while also drawing another.
The Lakers' success has been down to their incredible offensive abilities as they are the highest scoring team in the division.
The two teams have faced off twice during the season, the first time was in Round 11 where Taylors Lakes were victorious by four points in a thriller.
The second time was just last week and was a 15-point win for the Lions.
Luke Nappi scored four goals for Taylors Lakes in their most recent meeting and will be one Burnside will look to keep quiet this weekend.
Burnside Heights have enjoyed a great season so far as well finishing in second place with just the three losses
Unfortunately for them, two of those losses came against Taylors Lakes and they remain the team they will have to overcome if they are to win the premiership.
The replenished tall stocks have been damaging for the Bears this year and will need them to fire again and stretch the Taylors Lakes defenders.
Bears leading goal kicker Daniel Hovey was held goalless last week, and will be one Cole Harvey will need to stamp his authority on the game.
Westmeadows and Northern Saints will battle it out in an elimination final at Greenvale Recreation Reserve on Sunday for a place in the preliminary final.
Westmeadows head into Sunday's final as the higher ranked team having finished third.
However, due to a shaky finish to the season they aren’t as firm favourites as they may have looked a few weeks ago
In their last four games before finals, the Tigers recorded just one win as well as two losses and a draw.
Both teams have faced off against each other twice this year with Westmeadows winning the first encounter in Round 4 by 39 points, before the Northern Saints hit back in Round 11 defeating Westmeadows by 24 points.
The Northern Saints' last four games of the season were enough for them to secure a finals berth but were not without some shaky moments as well
The Saints won two of their last four while also drawing their last match of the season against Glenroy.
Rain played a factor in their last meeting with tough, contested footy playing more in the Saints' favour with Westy damaging when able to run, carry, and use efficiently by foot.
Section Road will be conducive to that footy but with rain potentially around, we'll have to wait and see how this one plays out!
