GRAND FINAL PREVIEW
By Tara Murray
Another chapter will be added to the short rivalry between Greenvale and Burnside Heights in the Airport Toyota Women’s Division One grand final.
It’s only been the past two years that these sides have faced each other, but it has become one of the stronger rivalries in the competition.
The Bears were the only team to beat the Jets in the regular season last year before having one foot in a grand final in the semi final
A goal in the dying seconds from Talia Motta put the Jets into a second straight grand final, while the Bears were then knocked out in straight sets.
Not many people would have been surprised to see the two teams at the top again this time.
This year it was the Bears that lost just once during the regular season, and it was the Jets causing the upset
The Jets then stunned the Bears in the semi final to win through to a third straight grand final.
Burnside Heights joined them a week later with a win in the prelim to win through to its second women’s grand final.
Looking at the statistics, the Bears have been the clear best team all season.
They finished 10 points clear on top of the ladder and scored almost 200 more points than the Jets.
Kayla Ravanello, Bella Negri, and Holly McGregor finished second, third, and fourth respectively in the leading goal kicking and they had five players in the top 10.
The Bears need to make the most of their shots on goal, having been wasteful at times throughout the season
Defensively, they conceded just under 12 points per game
Only three times they've conceded three or more goals in a game and all three games have been against the Jets.
In the middle of the ground, they have the best player in the division in Krissy Trang, who has again driven the standards.
Five players from the 2018 grand final team played in the side's preliminary final win, among them some of the Bears biggest names.
Like the Bears, the Jets have a strong core group in the middle of the ground.
They build their game around them and then have options going forward, headed by leading goal kicker Alisa Magri
Magri hasn’t had the impact she would have liked in the past two grand finals kicking the only Jets goal in 2022 and not kicking one last season.
If Magri, who has won the leading goalkicker the last three seasons, can get on top then the Jets are hard to stop.
The group brings the experience of heartbreak to the match as well.
Thirteen players from last season’s grand final loss played in the semi final, while seven players from that semi final have featured in both grand finals.
Coach Troy Newton said they would look to approach the grand final differently this year after the past two and not getting the result they were after.
Last year illness ran through the club in the lead up to the grand final which didn’t help things against the red hot Essendon Doutta Stars
Newton said players would miss out this time round with the list good to go.
For the Bears, the loss in the semi final was a wake up call
It was the first time they had been beaten like that this season and didn’t have the answers when needed.
Bears coach Michael Davis said he thought the group was in a better mindset than 12 months ago, which showed in the preliminary final.
All the matches this season have been leading to this grand final clash, which doesn’t come as a surprise to many.
The key for the match isn’t likely to be the stars of each side.
We know what Ravenello, the Stevens sisters, Trang, Terira Fry, Haylea Cooke, and Magri can deliver week in, week out.
The match will be decided by that next group of players and who can step up in the big moments.
Which side’s bottom players will show something when most needed?
Whether it’s taking on a shut down role, laying a tackle at the right time, or kicking a crucial goal, it could be the difference.

GRAND FINAL PREVIEW
By Tara Murray
It’s the battle of the Lions in the Airport Toyota Women’s Division Two grand final.
The two top teams all year, Coburg Districts and the Sunbury Lions, have managed to hold off the challengers to make it to the final game of the year.
Both teams finished with 10 wins for the season with two losses, including beating each other once, with Sunbury’s big percentage earning the minor premiership
It’s been a journey for both teams to get to the grand final.
Districts has been building towards this since their first season in 2019.
It took them two years to get a win due to the pandemic and then in 2021, they were third when the season was called off.
The next two years they finished third and were knocked out in the first week of the finals.
This year they won their first final to win through to their first grand final
Maria Carbone is the only player from the club’s first ever side to be part of the semi final win this year.
For Sunbury, it’s been a journey as well. A successful club that’s had a strong junior program has had to rebuild the last few years.
They last played finals in 2018 before being relegated after 2019
Sunbury was flying in 2021 in Division Two before being promoted into Division One during the season, and after 2023 it was relegated back into Division Two.
This season it was the best team all season and won the minor premiership.
A slight hiccup and a number of injuries didn’t stop the side as it won through to the decider.
The grand final shapes up as an interesting match that could go either way as the three other matches between the sides have
Sunbury has been the best team both offensively and defensively this season but Districts has tested them.
Only three times this season has Sunbury conceded more than two goals, two of them in losses to Coburg Districts.
Offensively, Sunbury has been kept to just one goal in the losses to Districts.
How Sunbury shapes up in the front half will be one of the more interesting aspects heading into the game
Competition leading goal kicker Natachia Abela is suspended, while Bianca Pepper, who has kicked 13 goals for the season, hasn’t played since Round 6.
Amy Clendenning, who sits equal third for Sunbury, didn’t play in the preliminary final, while Emily Taylor, who is also in the top five for Sunbury, is under an injury cloud with a broken finger
Veterans Jaimee-lee Wilson and Krystie Dudley will play major roles in the set up come Saturday along with Brianna Spratling.
Wilson has played in all three of the Lions premierships, while Dudley was part of the 2015 premiership as well.
Districts' offence isn’t as potent as Sunbury’s but they have shared the goals around a bit more Liv Woods leads the way with 19, while Jacinta Brew is the only other player in double figures with 15.
Defensively, Coburg Districts has improved as the season went on.
In its last seven games, which includes two against the Sunbury Lions, it has conceded a total of four goals.
Woods is the key player for Districts heading into the grand final.
She was named best in Districts’ two wins against Sunbury She dominated the ruck early in the first final and is a danger up forward.
She’s surrounded by plenty of experience as well in all three sections of the ground.
Karla Tentonello and Jorja McKenna both fought back into the game in the second half in the ruck of the semi final, but neither played the preliminary final.
Eden Grant did the ruck work and was best on ground in the preliminary final, but is one of three Calder Cannons players set to return to Coates Talent League duties.
Sunbury's three Cannons players aren't expected to play, which will be a big loss with all three named in the best in the preliminary final.
The grand final will be won by which team can convert its dominance on the scoreboard when they have control
The first time they played, Sunbury did just that, while Coburg Districts did it the next two times.
Districts come in fresh after a week off, while Sunbury is banged up with a number of injuries.
Coburg Districts will bring plenty of confidence from its semi final win and will want to build on that performance
The team Sunbury is able to put on the park will be one thing to watch. The side will fight hard, but does it have the depth to overcome all its injuries and win a first EDFL women's premiership?

PRELIMINARY FINAL PREVIEW
By Eric Forman
Hillside and Aberfeldie will face off for the second spot in the decider in the Airport Toyota Women's Premier Division preliminary final at Lakeside Reserve
The Sharks enter the clash following a 32-point loss in the qualifying final to Oak Park, a contest they were chasing in from the start.
Hillside were slow to get going with coach Blaise Ferraro telling Star Weekly it wasn't overly unexpected.
"We didn’t come out to play,” he said “We’ve been a little bit flat for a couple of weeks and there was a little bit of inexperience there.
“A lot of girls were having their first crack at it. Everyone was a little bit fumbling.
“They were good and we were a little bit off.”
They'll meet an Aberfeldie side – who handed the
Sharks their only previous defeat – firing off an elimination final victory.
Abers were challenged in the first half by Essendon Doutta Stars who led by a point at half time, before kicking four unanswered goals in the third term to break the game open.
Hillside had separated itself as the favourite through dominant displays against every side, but had recently started to wane with that loss to Abers and last week's comfortable defeat
Abers, meanwhile, have won nine of their last 10 after starting the year 2-2.
For Ferarro, he's confident the finals experience as well as the previous loss to Abers will serve his side well.
League leading goal kicker Caitlin Sargent will again be a key focus for Aberfeldie after being held goalless in their last meeting
Sargent has scored 38 per cent of their goals this season, so the Sharks will be turning to others to impact the scoreboard if Sargent can't get off the chain
Up the other end, Erica Markesich is fresh off a fourgoal outing and is a key threat in the Abers forward half alongside Emily Smith and Maddison Wilczynski.
With last week an outlier, Hillside hasn't conceded any more than four goals in a game and will be hoping to keep the Abers forwards quiet
Can Abers keep Sargent quiet again? Will others step for Hillside if so?
Those are questions we'll find out when out grand final matchup is finalised.
Hillside are looking for a first grand final berth, while Aberfeldie want revenge on Oak Park
