All the best to the teams that will fight for the ultimate prize across the three Division Two Grand Finals.
In the Rookie Me Division One Senior Men’s Preliminary final, West Coburg is looking to amend their first loss of the year last week as Rupertswood try to spoil the party.
a spot in the Grand Final, while Strathmore and East Keilor will be looking to keep their season alive. Keilor have had a flawless season to date and aim to replicate their undefeated 2019 season, while Pascoe Vale have established themselves as the next best and are hunting for their first Grand Final appearance since their 2011 flag in B Grade.
This weekend sees the Men’s Strathmore Community Bank Division Two Grand Finals being played. Congratulations to Oak Park and Sunbury Kangaroos on making it to this weekend’s decider at Coburg City Oval. Oak Park are looking to go one better this season after a disappointing end to 2022 but enter this week more refreshed than last season.
Congratulations to Deer Park who will play off in next week’s Rookie Me Division One Grand Final in their first season in the EDFL after a pair of strong performances to kick off their premiership dreams. Again, good luck to all Division One sides playing for a spot in next week’s Grand Final.
The Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division premiership is down to four sides and their path to premiership glory starts this weekend.
On Sunday, all eyes will be on Keilor and Pascoe Vale playing for
Strathmore have built well in the second half of the season and begin their premiership defence as East Keilor are fighting for their first A Grade flag since 1994.
Piranha Park has provided a wonderful venue for our finals series thus far and we thank Coburg Football Club and Merribek Council for providing the wonderful facilities.
Good luck to all teams, members, volunteers, umpires, and officials this weekend.

If we thought Deer Park made a statement last week, then we’re out of superlatives for their dominant display against the previously undefeated West Coburg.
The margin stood at 70 points at the final siren in a game that Deer Park controlled from the outset.
We were expecting a third thriller between these two sides but with the margin 27 points at quarter time, Deer Park looked a different
beast entirely.
They would build on that lead through the next two quarters and restrict the Burgers to just 2.7 at the final change, boasting 11.9 themselves.
Four West Coburg goals in the final term made the scoreline a little more respectable for the minor premiers as they now prepare to face Rupertswood in a Preliminary Final.
Lachie Smart kicked five goals for Deer Park with multiples also to Todd Elton, Jack Dorgan, and Captain Spiros Amarantidis.
Levi Greenwood returned to the side with a best on ground performance after missing their first final, while Dorgan and Nash Holmes stood out in a stacked midfield battle.
Rupertswood are through to a Preliminary Final after defeating Hillside in their first Senior final win since moving across to the EDFL.
After trailing by 11 points at the first change, Rupo put the foot down in the final three quarters to outscore Hillside 12 goals to two (79 to 21).
They started winning clearances, retained possession around the ground, provided their forwards with better service than the first quarter, and applied manic pressure on the ball to force turnovers.
Dean Galea returned to Joe Brown Oval with four goals after dominating at the venue in the top flight for so many years, as Jacob
Chahine (three goals) and Zak Saad (two goals) provided headaches for the Hillside defence.
Jackson Cardillo and Jordan Tentonello were standout performers for Rupertswood but were complemented by a full team effort in a strong bounceback from their loss the previous week.
Josh Covelli was well held by Aaron West finishing with just two goals, while Koby Young was named Hillside’s best in what was a busy day for him and his side in defence.
West Coburg awaits Rupo who’ll get another run on Joe Brown Oval in as many weeks, while Charlie Denaro has coached his last game for Hillside following his incredible service to multiple clubs across the EDFL.
Sunbury Kangaroos will feature in their second Strathmore Community Bank Division Two Grand Final after defeating Taylors Lakes in a five-point thriller at Salesian College.
It was a hot start to the game with seven goals kicked in the opening term seeing Taylors Lakes stretch out to a 19-point lead at quarter time.
The Kangaroos responded with four unanswered goals in the second term to wrangle back the momentum and take a two-point lead into the main break.
Each team put three goals on the scoreboard in the third term with the Lions’ accuracy waning from their first-quarter blitz to see the game tied at the last change.
With everything to play for in the final quarter, Taylors Lakes struck first before the Kangaroos responded with the next two.
A Taylors Lakes goal in the 22nd minute brought the deficit back to one point, but just two minutes later Jack Vivian slotted a set shot to extend it back to a two-kick game.
After some misses either way, the siren sounded 36 minutes into the final quarter to hand the Sunbury Kangaroos an astonishing Grand Final berth after their 0-5 start to the season.
Dean Halliwell was superb in the ruck with Brenton Sutherland unable to take part, and enjoyed the experience of John Corso playing a big role in their midfield.
Rhys Magin was at his usual silky best, while Mitch Kook played a commanding role in the defensive half of the ground.
Mitch Streiff joined Vivian with two goals, while Raaf Rachrache kicked two up the other end of the ground.
Chris Vulic, Jack Burns, and Mitch Jones finished off their stellar seasons with a strong performance in a Taylors Lakes outfit that can hold their head high after an outstanding season despite the unwanted end.
It’s the battle of the Kangaroos on Saturday at Coburg City Oval for the Strathmore Community Bank Division Two premiership.
Oak Park and the Sunbury Kangaroos have taken very different routes to the Grand Final, but that means little come the first bounce on Saturday.
Oak Park are the red-hot favourites heading into the game. Since coming back into Division Two in 2020, Oak Park has been one of the standout teams of the competition.
They were only percentage behind Moonee Valley when the 2021 season was called off, with the Fog getting promoted.
Last season, all three Oak Park sides made Grand Finals, but only the Under 18.5s could get the job done.
This year was a little bit of a slower start, but come the back end of the season, Oak Park entered finals clearly the team to beat.
The first quarter of the Semi Final against Taylors Lakes sent a statement, with a nine-goal lead at the first break.
Fourteen players from last year’s Grand Final side played in the side’s Semi Final win against Taylors Lakes.
Throw in Hirsi Twomey and Max Gleeson, who missed the Semi Final win through suspension, and Blair Cronin, who missed last year’s Grand Final, makes for a very stable line up.
The Sunbury Kangaroos on the other hand is a fairytale story.
After just one win last season, Sunbury came down a division with a new coach and a young playing group with an eye on the future.
It started the season 0-5 and finals seemed anything but plausible at that point.
While it hadn't won a match, Sunbury had been in all five games and could have easily had a winning record at that stage.
But as confidence grew, so did the results and the side put themselves in finals contention.
It would come down to the final round, with a win against Oak Park needed or an injury riddled Burnside Heights to pull off an upset against Coburg Districts.
A one-point win by the Bears was enough for Sunbury to sneak into the top four.
Then came two finals wins in similar fashion. A slow start before warming into the game and Sunbury is a side that never says die and has shown it can never be discounted.
Coach Shanon Carroll said the side’s unpredictability is its biggest strength and it has proven that way in the finals so far.
Just four players from the 2019 premiership team, Mitch Streiff, Mitch Kook, Matthew Leonard, and John Corso played in the Preliminary Final win last week.
The best on ground from the 2019 premiership, Brenton Sutherland missed the game but is expected to return for the Grand Final.
For the Kangaroos, it’s the young group of players that are the most exciting.
They fell agonisingly short last season of making the Division One Under 18.5 Grand Final by one point, but the bond of that group is telling.
Blake Tirchett, Brody Watts, Shawn Bowden, Zach Ploog, Jordan James, and Daniel Stubbs were part of that group and will form the nucleus for the Kangaroos going forward.
Looking closely at the two teams' seasons, Oak Park has the upper hand in most categories.
Oak Park was the best team offensively during the regular season, averaging 104 points per game to Sunbury’s 91 points per game.
Oak Park sat only behind Taylors Lakes defensively, conceding on average 64 points per game compared to Sunbury’s 76.5 per game.
The two teams played each other three times during the season with Oak Park winning on all three occasions.
In Round 2, Oak Park got over the line by two points having had seven more scoring shots. The Round 10 clash was all one-way traffic with Oak Park destroying Sunbury in their worst performance for the season.
The final round clash was another thriller with Oak Park winning by three points, but it had nothing on the line unlike Sunbury.
Come game day, expect Oak Park to try and exert some physicality early on Sunbury. It was what happened in Round 10 and both Northern Saints and Taylors Lakes did the same thing in the final series.
If Oak Park gets on the board early, it needs to get some reward for dominance on the scoreboard to put Sunbury out of the game.
Jedd Taylor will be one of the keys for Oak Park having kicked 12 goals in the last two meetings between the sides.
We know he can play up the ground, but I would expect him to play a fair chunk of time forward.
At the other end, Sunbury has Rhys Magin. The former Essendon player has been one of the best players in the competition having come across this year.
Whether it's up forward, where he finished second in the competition goal kicking, or in the middle, he can have an influence.
The ruck contest will be another big battle. Traditionally on Grand Final day, rucks have had a big influence on games.
With Twomey and Sutherland set to return for their sides, they will be big inclusions. Dean Halliwell is a wildcard for Sunbury in that area, coming off a best on ground performance in the Preliminary Final.
If Sunbury get a sniff, that’s when they’re at their most dangerous as they’ve shown in the two finals.
Sunbury keeps coming and coming and it’s an amazing thing what confidence and momentum can do.
While Sunbury has nothing to lose, the one concern could be if they’re spent before making the big day.
There’s been a lot of energy and excitement used the last few weeks, Sunbury is hoping it can take it one step further.
While it's the battle of the Kangaroos, there will only be one Kangaroo King come 5pm on Saturday.

A lot can change in a few weeks, as the Rookie Me Division One finals series show. Entering the finals, West Coburg was the team to beat having gone through the regular season undefeated, while Rupertswood had beaten Deer Park for a second time to enter finals on a strong note.
Since then Deer Park has dispatched both Rupertswood and West Coburg in impressive fashion to seal the first Grand Final spot.
Rupo were able to bounce back against Hillside in the battle of the Sharks, to earn a shot at West Coburg in the Preliminary Final. West Coburg will be favourites heading into this game, but what impact does the loss to Deer Park have?
It’s not the fact that they lost, but it was the manner that it happened.
Yes, Deer Park has loaded up with its stars and is starting to find form, but it’s not often you see an undefeated side lose like that in finals.
The final score flattered West Coburg with some last quarter goals once the game was over.
For West Coburg, it brought back in a number of stars who had missed the final round and ultimately hadn’t played for two weeks. Sometimes that can have an impact, so West Coburg will be better for the run.
Rupertswood showed perfectly how to bounce back from a big loss last week against Hillside.
In the same situation as West Coburg this week, the Sharks brought the pressure from the start and were able to take control once they lowered their eyes inside 50.
Dean Galea looked good on his old home ground and the young stars of Jackson
Cardillo and Jordie Tentonello were brilliant in the middle.
Aaron West shut down Josh Covelli and you could expect him to get the job on Omar Saad.
Saad only kicked two goals last time they met with Ibby Taha the star up forward that day.
The Sharks are only going to get stronger with the likes of Brent Swallow, Dylan Podolczak, and Ben Borg among those in line to return.
The teams only played each other once this season with West Coburg too strong on that day, winning by 48 points at Shore Reserve.
The Shoretress has been an unhappy hunting ground for many sides in recent times, including the Sharks.
The difference on this occasion was the first quarter, with West Coburg leading by 38 points at the first break.
The start will again be the key for this game. If the Sharks start well it puts the pressure back onto West Coburg and the mental demons could start to appear.
If West Coburg starts well, it will show that last week was just a down week and we could see more of the usual West Coburg style of football.
While the one time they faced each other was a blow out, don’t expect it to be this time around with a Grand Final spot on the line.

The top flight’s path to premiership glory commences this weekend after a refreshing pre-finals bye!
Both games will be played on Sunday with plenty on the line.
Keilor will be looking to replicate their incredible 2019 season as they face Pascoe Vale in their bid to remain undefeated and book the first spot in the Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division Grand Final.
Coburg City Oval will host the sides and what will be the third time these two have met with Keilor taking the two victories in starkly contrasting games.
The Panthers were able to stick with the Blues in their Round 2 clash which ultimately saw Keilor win by 12 points.
Pascoe Vale took a two-point lead into the main break as Keilor exited half time showing their propensity to get looks on the goal face, but weren’t able to capitalise kicking 4.7.
Their lead was 14 points at the final change which they would be able to maintain in the high-scoring affair.
Keilor had a range of contributors in front of goal with the newly reformed Nick O’Kearney, Corey Ellis, and Damien Cavka putting the league on notice with high-quality outputs.
Pascoe Vale boasted six multiple goal scorers on the day which would contrast their second meeting with Keilor in Round 10 where they only managed six goals for the game in a dominant display from the flag-favourites.
Keilor piled on seven first-quarter goals through torrential rain and would extend on their 41-point quarter-time lead to win by 59 points in a forgettable day for Pascoe Vale.
The Blues restricted Pascoe Vale’s transition which was already made
tougher by the conditions and finished with 19 more scoring shots.
Since that loss, Pascoe Vale had a horrid run with injuries and dropped games to Greenvale, Airport West, and Strathmore, but they were able to persevere and do enough to hold second spot as they had for much of the season.
With players returning from those injuries and two big wins to round out the season, you can expect Pascoe Vale to perform more like their first contest with Keilor and give themselves the best opportunity possible to reach their first Grand Final since their B Grade flag in 2011.
Over at Sewell Reserve on Sunday, the season is on the line for Strathmore and East Keilor who do battle in the eliminator.
Strathmore’s second half of the season has been similar to that of 2022 where they’ve started to play more consistent footy with as close to their best 22 out on the park.
East Keilor meanwhile, have been somewhat inconsistent with form and availability.
If the pre-finals bye was going to serve any side the best, it’d be the Cougars.
They made it pretty clear that there was a large amount of unavailability at Overland Reserve with a couple of Reserves
forfeits, but they’re expected to welcome back a number of key players into the senior side to take part in the finals. The two meetings between these sides have been split down the middle with East Keilor taking a close victory in Round 5, and Strathmore putting up a dominant display in Round 14. Their first meeting was a tight contest throughout the day as Strathmore would have been ruing their inaccuracy in front of goal kicking 8.9 in the second half compared to East Keilor’s 9.2.
George Nabbout and Frank Campisi kicked 10 of the Cougars’ 16 goals, while Mitch Purcell booted four majors for the Mores.
Strathmore looked like the reigning premiers we expected in their second clash controlling the game from the outset and disallowing East Keilor to make a run to get back into the game. Tom Condon returned for that clash and kicked a vital four goals in a day their forwards applied 13 more scoring shots than East Keilor.
While Strathmore seem to have the upper hand leading into this contest, East Keilor’s unpredictability with their exciting brand can’t be discounted.
If they can get their full side on the park, you can expect this game to be incredibly exciting to watch.
