Greenvale. All games were played in good spirits and were contests worthy of a grand final day.
We thank all players, club officials, volunteers, umpires, supporters, and host clubs for the way they conducted themselves on the biggest day of our female football calendar.
Two taking place at three venues over the weekend. Finally, I extend my congratulations to all our iFLY Junior grand finalists from last Sunday. Well done to all teams who tasted premiership glory as well as our runners-up, officials, umpires, and host clubs who all conducted themselves in superb fashion.
It was a festival of women’s football last weekend at Windy Hill, as we saw all three Airport Toyota Women’s premierships awarded for season 2023.
I extend my congratulations to Airport West, Essendon Doutta Stars, and Oak Park on their victories and commend Aberfeldie and
We also thank Airport Toyota for their unwavering support of female football in the EDFL as naming rights sponsor of the competition. We have seen our women’s competitions continue on an upwards trajectory as we welcomed higher participation rates and additional teams join the competition in 2023. Our senior men’s finals also commence this weekend with the Under 18 Men’s, Reserves and Seniors in Rookie Me Division One and Strathmore Community Bank Division
Heading into the weekend, the EDFL once again urge all supporters, club officials and players that they set the example with their behaviour on and off the field. The EDFL will not tolerate any kind of misconduct and are willing to act in the firmest ways possible.
Good luck to all teams, members, volunteers, umpires, and officials this weekend.

Oak Park completed the final hurdle to secure the Premier Division flag in a stirring performance at Windy Hill on Saturday.
Aberfeldie were heading into this one with just one loss to their name, while Oak Park’s three blemishes were at the hands of the Two Blues.
Despite that, we knew Oak Park’s best could stand up and a riveting showpiece of women’s footy is what we saw in the final game of the day.
Aberfeldie flexed their muscles with the only two goals of the opening term thanks to Elisha Wain, as the Kangaroos were held to just one behind.
Resilience has no doubt been instilled into this Oak Park outfit and they were able to reply back with two unanswered of their own in the second term.
Alexi Kateliotis opened their account with a hail mary from the centre square looking for a teammate that bounced past everyone and through for a goal.
League leading goal kicker Alex Quigley produced a bit of individual brilliance with a snap out of a pack to hand them a lead of two points at the main break.
Neither team gained a significant edge in the third quarter with Oak Park carrying all the momentum early in the fourth.
The Kangaroos however, were unable to break through for a goal registering four behinds to stretch the lead to seven points.
Aberfeldie continued to fight back and after a high free kick inside forward 50, Taylor Moss cut the margin to one point with 10 minutes to play.
Contested footy was the name of the game with tiring legs and high pressure before the Kangaroos hopped into space and gave Quigley a task one out.
With everything at stake, their sharpshooter trapped the ball inside the boundary, fired off a dribbler, and produced one of the more incredible finishes you’re likely to see in the final moments of a Grand Final to lift her side to a seven-point lead, and ultimately provide the dagger.
Abers would push on but fell short to Oak Park by six points who secured their first flag in women’s footy.
Tafa Malumu was a brick wall in defence and was awarded best on ground with the Oak Park defence holding Aberfeldie to just eight points after quarter time.
Quigley’s two goals led the charge for Oak Park with Sam German playing a notable role in the forward half with her pressure and presence around goal.
Emily Findlay and Mia Briedis ran hard up and down the wings all day and were solid link players, while Mikayla Barnes showed her experience with ball in hand.
Erin Graham and Trilby Sheppard complemented Malumu down back with good defensive efforts all day.
Marlo Zambelli and Ilaria Akers worked hard in the Aberfeldie engine room while Aarzu Mavi created good width at various occasions.
After missing out last year, Oak Park’s redemption arc is complete.
Essendon Doutta Stars took out their second Airport Toyota Women’s Division One Grand Final with their eighth win on the trot.
Greenvale and Essendon Doutta Stars were evenly matched coming into this contest with the Jets gaining the advantage in their first two matchups, but their most recent contest was a comfortable win four Douttas amid their winning streak.
It was a chess battle in the early stages of this game with Greenvale unable to capitalise on their chances and control of the game.
The Jets kicked four behinds in the opening term and held Douttas scoreless, but it’d be a role reversal in the second quarter.
Neve Crowley booted the first goal of the game with a welltime forward foray that led her into an open goal square. Douttas’ intensity was sky high and they were able to get the second goal of the game on the back of a Jessie Hulett crumb.
They had all the momentum and took a 10-point lead into the main break with Greenvale held goalless.
Troy Newton’s side needed a lift after the break, and that’s exactly what they got with a beautiful finish from Nicolette Paschalis on the boundary opening their account.
Less than a minute later, Greenvale’s hero from a couple of weeks ago Talia Motta won the contest at ground level and handed the Jets the lead five minutes into the second half. With the game in the balance, Essendon Doutta Stars needed a response of their own and who better to provide it than Hulett who kicked two goals in a couple of minutes from set shots.
Restoring that 10-point lead at the final change, Douttas piled on the next three goals to run away with a 27-point victory and the flag.
It was going to take a team effort to ground this Jets outfit that had been dominant for so much of the year, and that’s exactly what they got.
Crowley turned in a wonderful Captain’s performance and took out the best on ground honours with a big day in the ruck, displaying a high level of mobility to set up well behind the ball and continually make each contest.
Hulett was another standout with four vital goals and a looming presence in the forward 50 for Essendon Doutta Stars.
Jayla Rutley worked hard through the middle of the ground with Megan Runting who kicked the sealer, while Kiara Jones was stringent in defence.
Zoe Hardiman and Terira Fry were pivotal in Greenvale’s midfield playing big parts in their dominance through various stages of the game.
For the second time, the Division One Premiership cup will be heading to Nipper Jordan Oval!
Airport West completed their perfect season to hoist the Division Two Premiership Cup high above their heads after a dominant showing at Windy Hill on Saturday.
The Eagles entered the game red-hot favourites winning all of their games by significant margins bar a drawn result of a game which was called off early.
After experiencing the heartache of last year’s Grand Final loss, the Eagles were primed to go one better in 2023. They quickly showed why they earnt the right to be the favourites with a dominant opening term kicking five unanswered goals.
Rachel Lorenzon opened the game with the first goal, just her fifth of the season before the league leading goal kicker Emily Gipp chimed in with their second a couple of minutes later.
Two brilliant goals from Chey Macumber and Gipp had the Eagles soaring approaching the first change, before Georgia O’Donovan matched their efforts to provide their fifth goal of the opening 20 minutes.
It was going to be an uphill battle from there for Aberfeldie who had only registered three goals against the Eagles in their previous three matchups.
Star Two Blue Lily Robinson did all she could to lift her side as she streamed down the centre of Windy Hill taking three bounces, selling some candy, and running into an open
goal to kick their first of the game.
The deficit at half time stood at 35 points, a margin that Aberfeldie did well to keep in check when the final siren went, the second half score 14-7 in favour of Airport West. Despite the Aberfeldie fightback, Airport West were far too strong and continued their dominant run in the final game of the year and took out the Premiership with a 42-point victory.
A number of performers stood up for the Eagles with Natasha Campbell named best on ground with a hardworking performance through the middle of the ground, willing herself to contest after contest and getting first hands on the footy.
Edyn Grubisic fought hard in the ruck to supply the Eagles mids with first use while the Airport West forward half was as potent as ever.
Marking options in Gipp and O’Donovan ended up with three and two goals respectively, while Lorenzon (two goals) and Macumber (one goal) were dangerous at ground level.
Antonietta Parisi was hard at the contest, while Captain Shae Montrose was a steady head behind the ball for the Eagles.
For Aberfeldie, Jacqueline Wade joined Robinson as their other goal scorer, while Amelia Liberato and Briana Marino had solid days out.
Fifteen wins and an average score of exactly 100 points, the Eagle landed in the nest at Hansen Reserve with the flag.
Finals footy was on the line for Greenvale over the weekend with a win keeping them well within reach of a finals berth, but a two-point loss against Essendon Doutta Stars will see them working uphill to feature in September.
The two teams were evenly poised all game with the margins at the main and final break within a kick either way.
The Jets peppered the goal face in the final term but were only able to manage 1.7 with two goals from Douttas earning them the victory.
It’s been an incredibly positive end to the year for the young Essendon Doutta Stars group with a couple of wins on the trot and the future of Barry Prendergast in the head coaching set secured.
Greenvale on the other hand will be disappointed they couldn’t come away with the victory and will now need to comfortably win and rely on Aberfeldie to beat East Keilor by plenty to reduce the percentage differential.
Rupertswood and St Albans drew first blood in the finals previews with Deer Park and Hillside respectively.
We’ll see these matchups next week with a lot more on the line, but both victors will take some confidence into those contests.
Rupertswood especially will, having secured their second win against Deer Park.
Deer Park will rue their inaccuracy in front of goal kicking 9.17, but it mustn’t overshadow a five-goal final term from Rupo to hand them the four points.
St Albans enjoyed a 19-point win over the Sharks in the Elimination Final preview.
The Saints held the final margin lead at the main break and fought off a Hillside fightback to extend the lead. With survival on the line next week, you can expect the contest to heat up drastically at Coburg City Oval on Sunday.
Keilor Park have held their spot in Rookie Me Division One for 2024 after holding off a rampant Westmeadows outfit fighting for their spot.
The Devils flew under the radar for much of the season picking up a few wins and remaining competitive and have thoroughly deserved to hold their spot.
Westy needed to win by around the seven to eight goal mark and were unable to take any advantage at the breaks, the four-goal deficit at the end of the third all but sealing their fate.
It was a valiant fightback from the Tigers who saw a lot of talent go through the door last summer, but they’ll join Glenroy in Division Two in 2024.
A finals spot was still up for grabs in the final round of Strathmore Community Bank Division Two with all eyes on two games: Burnside Heights v Coburg Districts and Oak Park v Sunbury Kangaroos.
Sunbury Kangaroos had to either win or pray a depleted Bears outfit got the job done against Coburg Districts, and their prayer was answered when Burnside Heights led by a point at the final siren.
They got out to a 20-point lead at the first change and maintained it into the half, before the Lions fought back with a five-goal third term.
The Bears held on and afforded Sunbury Kangaroos a finals berth after their 0-5 start to the season.
Sunbury Kangaroos almost didn’t need to rely on that result coming close to a win of their own against Oak Park, three points was all that separated them from their guaranteed finals spot.
The disappointment would have quickly turned into euphoria once learning of the other result as they prepare to go again against Northern Saints in an Elimination Final.
Speaking of Northern Saints, special shoutout to Khoder Taleb for kicking a whopping 16 goals to steal the leading goal kicking crown from Rhys Magin, what an effort!
The top five finals structure for 2023 will see the undefeated minor premiers West Coburg enjoying a well-deserved week off with the two finals games entering their second consecutive bouts.
Kicking Rookie Me Division One finals action off on Saturday at Coburg City Oval is Deer Park and Rupertswood in a Qualifying Final.
Both teams ended the season on the same amount of points with percentage the only major difference following a sublime month of footy from the Lions where they registered 181 scoring shots.
That run was part of a five-game winning streak that was ended by Rupo in the final round when the Sharks enjoyed their second win of the season against Deer Park by less than a goal.
Rupertswood powered home to kick five goals in the final quarter and take the two-point win.
Their two wins is made even more impressive by the fact that the venerable Dean Galea has been absent from Rupo’s lineup in both games with the Sharks finding other avenues to goal.
Zak Saad and Fraser Phelan-Smith booted three goals each among nine goal scorers in their one-point triumph back in Round 6, while Clayton Bonello kicked five in their most recent win along with four from Saad. Team selection for Deer Park will be a curious factor with the VFL wildcard games on this weekend.
In both games, they’ve been heavily reliant on Todd Elton and Lachie Smart who have well and truly delivered, but would love a greater contribution from Nicolas Aleksovski and Luke Goater if he’s named to create more headaches for the Rupo defence.
That said, creating shots on goal has not been an issue in their two meetings with their most recent effort of 9.17 last week against Rupo down significantly on their 51 per cent conversion average in front of goal (296.287).
Outside of a comfortable loss to the undefeated West Coburg, Rupo’s biggest loss has been just 15 points back in Round 1 so they’re a fighting side from Salesian College.
Brent Swallow also now has a month of footy under his belt after missing a few games, and with the addition of Galea into their forward line, this one is poised to be a third classic between the two sides.
St Albans v Hillside III will take place on Sunday at Coburg City Oval in a do-or-die clash.
This Elimination Final will be the second week in a row that these sides have met with the Saints taking a 19-point victory in the last contest at Shark Park.
Hillside fought back after St Albans held a comfortable lead at the main break, but the Saints were able to hold on and secure the win in their first completed match against Hillside.
Their first meeting was abandoned at three-quarter time which saw Hillside leading by 18 points.
St Albans are marginally stronger at both ends of the ground in terms of points for and against, but team selection could also play a factor in this one.
Hillside were without Zak Wunhym, Anthony Prestia, and Josh Covelli last week which could bolster their lineup significantly with the full-time availability of Bailey Ryan.
St Albans welcomed back Andre Srour, Ajdin Elkasovic, and Stephen Heppell but were without Victor Micallef and the suspended Jarrod Tuppen who’ll again miss this week.
In what was an expectedly placid affair last week, you can expect the intensity to kick up a notch with the season on the line.
The finals structure wasn’t confirmed until the final siren of two games went last week which added to the growing excitement of the finals series for one of the more open competitions in the EDFL.
A Grand Final spot is on the line when Oak Park takes on Taylors Lakes on Saturday at Salesian College.
The Kangaroos have had an incredible season dropping just two games on their way to the minor premiership, while Taylors Lakes have bounced back from a five-win season under the tutelage of Steve Burns to secure their double chance.
Oak Park are ranked first in scoring and second in defence, while the Lions take the defensive crown and second spot in scoring.
Two of Taylors Lakes’ three losses have come at the hands of Oak Park who have enjoyed comfortable 55 and 30-point victories against the Lions, but both sides will look a little different from their last meeting.
Jake Toa returned to Taylors Lakes late in the season and has created a solid one-two combo with Andrew Gallina in the ruck/forward rotation.
Jack Burns, Chris Vulic, and Josh Vassolo were also missing from that side and should feature this Saturday.
For Oak Park, dominant ruck Hirsi Twomey’s absence compounds the presence of Toa, while half-back Max Gleeson will also miss.
The Kangaroos have had the upper hand on Taylors Lakes and the competition for much of the season and have shown solid depth rotation at times this year, but Taylors Lakes have found their form and best 22 in recent weeks to provide a good challenge.
Northern Saints and Sunbury Kangaroos are fighting for their seasons in this do-or-die clash at Joe Brown Oval on Sunday afternoon.
The Kangaroos scraped into the top four in the final round with Burnside Heights defeating Coburg Districts by a point and have had an incredible run since starting the season 0-5.
Out of their eight losses, five have been by nine points or less so this Kangaroos outfit is certainly better than their last minute entry to the finals suggest.
Northern Saints on the other hand split their last 12 games after winning their first four games.
Tamer Abdallah’s men were in the box seat for a top-two finish for a large portion of the season and have shown a high level of offensive potency throughout 2023.
Khoder Taleb has led the charge on that front finishing as the season’s leading goal scorer with 62 goals following a whopping 16 goals in the final round.
He overtook Rhys Magin in that game who currently has 57 goals, while Brody Watts (30 goals) and John Corso (22 goals) have also provided solid avenues to goal for the Kangaroos in 2023.
The season series between these two have been split down the middle with Northern Saints winning by 23 points the first time around, and Sunbury Kangaroos winning by 20 points the second time around.
