Chairman’s Report With the introduction of two new clubs namely Deer Park and St Albans, the league expanded its Senior Men’s Competition to 30 teams over three divisions for season 2023. The staggered introduction of these two new teams meant that Division One had 12 teams in season 2023, and will have 11 teams in season 2024 and 10 teams in season 2025. The competition in each of the three divisions was particularly strong during the season and demonstrated an improved level of competition over each of the three Senior Men’s competitions. Season 2023 saw a continued growth in the Senior Women’s competitions as the competition continues to rebuild after the enforced competition recess due to Covid restrictions. The competition culminated in an outstanding day of finals football at Windy Hill involving all three divisions with five clubs competing. The reports by Adem Saricaoglu (Senior Operations Manager) and Patrick Moloney (Junior Operations Manager) set out in more detail the results across the respective senior and junior competitions. Our Premiers in the Senior divisions are as follows: Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division: Keilor Airport Toyota Women’s Premier Division: Oak Park Rookie Me Division One: Deer Park Airport Toyota Women’s Division One: Essendon Doutta Stars Strathmore Community Bank Division Two: Oak Park Airport Toyota Women’s Division Two: Airport West Participation Our football competitions continue to rebuild after Covid and the league has had a successful year culminating in wellattended final series in juniors and seniors. Your Board acknowledges the enormous effort each club and its volunteers and players have made to participate in this past season which is a credit to you. One has every confidence that all our clubs will compete in season 2024 and I do urge all clubs to continue their efforts in the development of their junior bases and to expand women’s football within the club as well as improving the competitiveness of their senior teams. One does accept that for clubs there will be the perennial challenges of retaining volunteers and meeting the increase in costs of football clubs.

2

It should be noted that the league will not be increasing its affiliation fees nor player registrations for season 2024. EDFL Finances Financially we have had a sound year and continue to have a strong financial base. In one sense, the unexpected size of the surplus is a bonus and the league will be able to provide some relief to the clubs with a rebate covering each club’s initial instalment of affiliation fees in season 2024. Thanks to the work of Greta May, our Treasurer Andrea Tacono, and the support provided by the other Finance Sub Committee members Andrew Johnston, Ian Price, and myself. EDFL Partners Again, a special thanks to all our corporate partners and sponsors (as outlined in our CEO Report) for their continued support and in particular to the number of new sponsors that came on board this year. A special thanks to our major sponsor Strathmore Community Bank, its Chairman Peter Brown, the Board and its staff for its continued support and confidence it continues to show in our league and our ability to promote the Bank and the services it offers to the broader community. EDFL Umpiring As a league, while better placed than most other leagues, we have struggled to fill all umpiring positions in season 2023 and this has placed extra workload on our umpires, our umpiring department, and club umpires. To every umpire and club umpire who umpired a game this year, thank you for your contribution to help us make the season a successful one. A special thanks to our umpiring department led by Michael Willcox and Senior Coach Brett Pallini, who worked tirelessly to address the above situation. EDFL Staff A special thank you to Andrew Johnston and our committed staff for your work during season 2023. The league has engaged two new staff this year namely Eli Duxson (our Media Manager) who has performed a power of work handling an ever increasing workload, and Erin Heane (Adminstration Assistant) who in a limited period provided much-needed support to our administration operations. Jimmy Ainsworth Awards It was pleasing to announce at the Annual Presentation Night that the nominations of John Penaluna and Michael O’Dwyer

2023 Essendon District Football League Annual Report

(both from the Airport West Football Club) for the Jimmy Ainsworth Award for more than 25 years of service to the Club had been approved by the Board. Future Developments The League continues to work constructively with the new administration at the Essendon Football Club on the changing nature of the Windy Hill Development Project to ensure that the EDFL will remain a vital and viable part of that future. To the immediate north, the league is working with the City of Hume on retaining the Jacana Reserve as an important Australian Rules facility for local teams, umpiring, interleague training, and overflow games. The welcome news is that in season 2024 there will be at least two junior underage teams playing at Jacana and an Auskick Centre will also be there. This is no small achievement, and the league is indebted to the work of AFL Victoria (Shannon Gore) and a small dedicated group headed up by Nabil Yassine who was awarded a National AFL Diversity Achievement Award. The Merrifield Football Club will be entering junior teams in season 2024 in our competition. Thank You A thank you for the continued commitment of my Board colleagues Ian Price, Andrea Tacono, Steve Webb, Jan Chantry, Gareth Hanlon, and Nick Condos and to all Presidents, Secretaries, and club volunteers who have all played an important role for our league. Bernie Shinners Chairman

Chief Executive Report With 2023 being my first year in the role as CEO of the EDFL, it has been a very enlightening and enjoyable experience. The acceptance and support from all stakeholders were gratefully received. Season 2023 demonstrated the growing diversity and breadth of EDFL competitions and, therefore, the increasing requirements on our organisation. To be a part of the many successes on and off the field was pleasing to witness. Growth and change bring challenges which we will continue to embrace and work closely with our stakeholders to find the best solutions to make this the best league in Victoria. Growth With the introduction of Deer Park, St Albans, and the return of East Sunbury, the EDFL saw another year of growth for the league which is pleasing. Female participation continues to grow and it’s fantastic to see the positive impact our female players are having at their clubs and throughout the EDFL. In 2023, female teams represented 21 per cent of EDFL football teams. In senior football, eighteen clubs fielded senior women’s teams. An area for concern has been the continued struggle in the number of teams competing in our Under 18.5 men’s competitions. For 2024, there are indications that this trend will reverse with several clubs that weren’t able to get an U18.5 team up in 2023 very confident of having a 2024 team. A social EDFL Netball competition was managed in 2023 and the league is looking to do further investigations into managing a competition 2025 onwards. Umpires To the EDFL umpires, many of you went above and beyond the call of duty to make sure each game went ahead. I cannot thank you all enough for your commitment to the EDFL and I look forward to seeing you all again next year. Match Day Conduct Players, officials, and spectators form a great a part of our game. For a large majority I thank you. However, the conduct of some individuals, on match day, continue to provide many challenges. I appreciate the club support in the implementation of the three match day actions and the success of the trial that was implemented. These issues we experienced, at time this year, is shared across all leagues and there is still a lot of work to be done in this space, it will take everyone to buy in and share consistent standards for improvement to occur. Strategic Plan A key activity for late 2023, early 2024 is

to review the current five-year Strategic Plan for the EDFL. The EDFL Strategic Plan 2020 – 2024 provided important direction for all parties and part of this review will be to update it and then develop the next Strategic Plan for the EDFL. Development of this has already commenced with input from our stakeholders, mainly clubs, and will involve all other relevant stakeholders as well. Many people will be asked to give up their time and thoughts by attending workshops, completing surveys and attend meetings, which will be valuable and much appreciated. We all enjoy being part of the EDFL and care about the future progress of our clubs, the league, our partners, and all people involved. Infrastructure & Clubs As the league looks to continue to expand our competition, this is creating more pressure on club infrastructure. We have already seen several projects being undertaken this year with more to be undertaken soon. Developments, including new and upgraded change rooms, social facilities, lighting, amenities, and grounds, are all vital to ensuring we continue to deliver the best possible community sporting opportunities. The five Local Government Areas where EDFL clubs are based, Brimbank, Hume, Melton, Moonee Valley, and Merri-Bek City Councils, are critical to the ongoing success of the EDFL. We thank them for their assistance in our club operations and with these infrastructure projects. While welcoming new clubs to the EDFL, supporting our existing clubs wherever we can will always remain a high priority for the office and the Board. In 2023, we saw 27 different clubs make a grand final, with 20 different clubs winning a premiership across senior or junior competitions. These figures are good indicators for the EDFL and the diversity of clubs whose teams play in grand finals. This further reflects the quality of people involved with our clubs, and the benefits of running divisional-based competitions across senior and junior football. EDFL Partners The Strathmore Community Bank again made a massive contribution to our competition through their support of the EDFL. The amazing support of the Strathmore Community Bank also benefits the wider community. We enjoy the support and friendship of chair Peter Brown and all the directors and bank staff. We must also acknowledge the continued support from Airport Toyota, Rookie Me, AGA, Shearasun Brewery, and iFLY as the naming rights sponsor of the various EDFL

competitions and other awards. Thanks to our suite of other sponsors, which includes Sherrin, Gameday Apparel, Grashan Sportswear, Sportsmoves, MCAP, Ascot Vale Sports & Trophies, Brad Teal Woodards Real Estate, Club Warehouse, Club Connect, Cluch, Elastoplast, Essendon Football Club, Glenroy Bakery, SEDA, Liquex Logistics, Love Me Love You, Nena and Pasadena, Pat Cronin Foundation, Premier Data, SG Print and Paper, Red Onion, Sportscast, TAC, and The Valley. We are extremely appreciative of your support and look forward to continuing those relationships. Appreciation The EDFL is indeed fortunate to have a committed Board of Directors, who are dedicated to the growth and development of our league. Led by Chair Bernie Shinners, the Board has been a great support to myself and all staff and I thank them for this support, particularly in my first year. A huge thank you to the EDFL staff, who once again managed our competitions professionally, efficiently and with enthusiasm. This made and my job a lot easier to manage. Greta May, Erin Heane, Patrick Moloney, Adem Saricaoglu, Ken Waters, Eli Duxson, Michael Willcox, Darren Flanigan, and Shannon Gore (AFL Vic) – thank you all. Lastly, thank you to other important stakeholders who have assisted the EDFL this year including the EDFL Umpires Association, our tribunal and appeals board members, and the Essendon Football and Cricket clubs. Again, I am fully appreciative for everyone’s contribution to a fantastic year and l look forward to 2024 and beyond. Andrew Johnston Chief Executive Officer

Senior Operations Report Senior EDFL football enjoyed significant growth in a number of ways in 2023, and hopefully that trend will continue moving forward. While there remains plenty to work on, the 2023 season provided a solid base from which to grow our league. Men’s Football We welcomed two new clubs into the fold, with both Deer Park and St Albans Football Clubs successfully transitioning into the EDFL. The transition process was long and arduous, but eventually both clubs landed in our Division One competition and immediately adapted to their new surrounds. Both clubs, along with fellow recent newcomer Rupertswood, qualified for finals in 2023, signifying a new dawn for our growing league. I’d like to particularly congratulate Deer Park on winning the Division One premiership and we now look forward to watching the Lions take on the EDFL’s best as part of our Premier Division competition in 2024. In Division Two we welcomed the return of East Sunbury, however we unfortunately did not get to see Jacana take the field. The overall numbers are solid, especially considering our Thirds competition grew from 12 clubs represented in 2022 to 15 taking part this year. But while our senior men’s program remains strong, we did see a slight increase in forfeits at Reserves level, including four in Premier Division. We collectively need to monitor this trend and find ways to help clubs develop their depth of talent in the open-age ranks. Women’s Football The EDFL community should be proud of the ongoing development of our senior women’s competition.

It was evident through the games I attended throughout the year that the onfield standard is getting better, but what was also clear was that the work has only just begun. Several minor changes in open-age and Under 18.5 competitions, including moving to 16-a-side and making white shorts optional for away teams, were positive steps forward. However, we still have a fair portion of our clubs that have not yet embraced women’s football. While we did retain all existing clubs from 2022, no new clubs entered teams in our open-age competitions this year. I‘d like to acknowledge Jan Chantry for her work in establishing the EDFL Female Football Advisory Committee, which was established to look into all aspects of female football in the EDFL and comprises several members from across our clubs and league administration. This committee is passionate about growing and improving our female competitions. I look forward to taking part in future sessions and hopefully facilitating further change for the betterment of our league. Under 18.5 Football The retention of footballers through our Under 18.5 ranks remains one of the biggest challenges not only for the EDFL, but the entire football industry across the country. Despite the ongoing challenges, our clubs bucked the trend in 2023 and our overall team numbers grew encouragingly. On the men’s side of things, across the three divisions, our U18.5 team total rose from 25 to 28, while our women’s competition grew from eight teams to 10 – an overall increase of 15 per cent across the league. This is an outstanding achievement in the current climate and clubs should be congratulated for their hard work. Some significant issues were presented to the EDFL throughout 2022 that we looked to address in delivering our Under 18.5 program this year, and with some improvements made to our fixturing and structural processes, hopefully clubs and participants enjoyed a better Under 18.5 experience in 2023. That said, so much more work needs to be done to help every EDFL club field an Under 18.5 team in our men’s and women’s competitions. The Under 18.5 pathway is so important for every club in bridging their junior and senior programs, and we’ll continue to assist clubs where we can to provide a healthy and viable Under 18.5 competition. Finals Series With Men’s Division One expanding to 12 teams and a top-five format, the 2023 EDFL Finals Series was bigger than ever and I’d like to thank all clubs, participants, officials, and volunteers who took part and helped

4

2023 Essendon District Football League Annual Report

deliver a successful series. Of particular note was our return to Coburg City Oval for the first time since 2019. With restricted access to Windy Hill, Coburg Football Club stepped up to the plate and hosted four finals events this year, including the Men’s Division Two Grand Final Day. Our return to one of our more historic and traditional finals venues was well-received, with larger-than-expected crowds attending Coburg City Oval. Another significant change was hosting senior finals games in Sunbury for the first time in league history, with Rupertswood hosting two finals events in front of decent crowds. After taking the brave decision to reduce our entry fees in the face of rising costs, our overall crowd numbers improved significantly and credit goes to everyone who helped facilitate our finals series, including host clubs and league personnel who all made my job that much easier. Acknowledgements The EDFL staff are a solid unit who are committed to the collective growth and progress of our league, and I’d like to thank the entire team for their ongoing support. Then there are others who volunteer their time throughout the year who need to be acknowledged. I’d like to thank Allan Taylor for his endless commitment to our league, chiefly through his tireless work in assisting during tribunal nights and finals events, as well as the work he continues to do with our umpire department. We also thank Peter Jeffs and the entire Tribunal Panel, as well as our Appeals and Investigations personnel, for their contributions in 2023. Season 2023 was both challenging and rewarding, and we now look forward to a bigger and better 2024 season. Adem Saricaoglu Senior Football Operations Manager

Junior Operations Report Season 2023 saw major changes sweep the Essendon District Football League, with many new initiatives being rolled out, not only on field but also off it. Club buy in was fantastic this year, especially for our ‘Don’t Be That Parent’ campaign, which encourages supporters to celebrate all of the fantastic skills and tremendous spirit that is demonstrated by players in the league. I encourage all clubs to sign up to this campaign, to support our umpires firstly, and because it is influencing how supporters are behaving at junior football, I have seen this firsthand. As a league we want a safe and supportive environment for all our stakeholders, this starts with respect for all from behind the fence to on the field. Interleague The 2023 AVMJDS interleague carnival was in full swing over the Kings Birthday weekend. We staged matches for both girls and boys programs against the WRFL, RDFNL, NFNL, SMJFL, and YJFL. This year’s series was a little different to previous versions with the introduction of an Under 14 girls competition, to which we submitted two teams. This competition is crucial for our development as it helps introduce girls to the interleague program and should ultimately improve our Under 15 girls program the following year. This year we also made the change to have a sole boys team and a sole girls team in our Under 13 interleague carnival (previously we have had two mixed teams). The girls held their own against predominantly boys teams from the RDFNL and WRFL, which was pleasing to see. Special thanks must go to Darren Flanigan, who helped make this program

a success. We also thank the players, parents, and coaches involved – without you we simply cannot run this series. Junior Pathways More EDFL juniors will join the AFL with Jordan Croft and Hugo Garcia finding new homes at the 2023 National Draft. Jordan joins the Western Bulldogs after being selected with pick 15 as a fatherson prospect after playing 98 games with Maribyrnong Park, making his senior debut as a 17-year-old. Hugo was drafted by St Kilda with pick 50 after playing 67 games with Taylors Lakes and 52 with Greenvale. We also give our best wishes to all AFLW Draft hopefuls for late December. More recently, Monique Conti was awarded the AFLW’s highest honour after winning the AFLW Best and Fairest. Monique started her football journey with Essendon Doutta Stars before playing with Melbourne University and Aberfeldie. Junior Premierships Congratulations to all teams that won premierships. We had some outstanding games of junior football played and all were played in tremendous spirit. All hosting clubs were fantastic in managing the games and we thank them for their support, along with the various councils who support the league. Thank you to all our EDFL and club umpires for their support in helping us get games underway in 2023. I know at times this is a thankless task but please know that you are appreciated by all at the EDFL, as we all know games simply do not go ahead without the umpires.

Acknowledgements Thank you to all our club committees, club volunteers, and parents for the tireless hours you have put into junior football. We hope you have enjoyed the year, and we hope to see you back around the grounds in season 2024. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the EDFL board and fellow staff members for their unwavering support and tireless efforts throughout the year. Special thanks must go to Ken Waters for his commitment to the EDFL over many years, and his guidance and support for me has been instrumental. Enjoy the off season and see you back at the footy in 2024! Patrick Moloney Junior Football Operations Manager

Club Development Report As with most things in football, subtle changes were made to the role of a club support manager into community leagues. With clubs and leagues back into full football mode post Covid, assistance to clubs became more targeted with a more needs-based approach. Clubs were once again regularly notified with information around grant writing, grant availability, child safety, coach education, liquor licensing, and volunteer support across season 2023. Child Safety The increased focus on Child Safety due to the Victorian state government requirements at a club and league level was one of these areas requiring intervention. All clubs now have a child safety officer and a child protection policy and with the assistance of external consultants, clubs have an opportunity to be fully compliant in this space. Coaching Coach education was highlighted by clubs as an area in need of help. Training sessions and coaching in-services were offered to clubs to assist their club coaches. A total of 68 sessions were conducted by the EDFL with a range of club sessions, individual coach mentoring, training sessions, and Level 2 mentoring conducted. Aiming to continually improve the standard of coaching in the EDFL, a coaching coordinator workshop is planned along with 12 face-to-face new and inexperienced coach practical workshops for the 2024 preseason.

Rookie Me Rookie Me returned as a league sponsor and once again conducted a series of skill acquisition and mini game sessions during the school holidays with over 300 EDFL junior players attending. The Rookie Me Coach platform was also rolled out to clubs as part of the attempt to introduce new technologies and skills to our club coach cohort. Grants & Funding The AFL Victoria SCIF Grant scheme was utilised by 11 EDFL clubs, making 17 successful applications and the clubs received a total of $112,213.25 for a range of items including scoreboards, defibrillators, Point of Sale technology, new teams, female development forms, and more. EDFL Clubs were active in the AFL Toyota ‘Good for footy Raffle’ with 19 clubs involved and as a collective receiving $22,200.00 in ticket sales with 100 per cent of sales going directly to the clubs involved. Interleague The 2023 Metro Junior Champs were conducted in conjunction with the junior football department which saw the EDFL enter 10 teams across three age groups with five boys and five girls teams playing. The EDFL was the only metropolitan competition to enter girls only teams in U15, U14, and U13 competitions. A huge thank you to all the coaches, assistants, team mangers, and trainers from EDFL clubs that assisted with the teams.

A special mention to Patrick Moloney and Ken Waters for their outstanding help with the teams. Darren Flanigan Community Club Support Manager

Umpiring Report The EDFL would like to thank every field, boundary, and goal umpire who umpired in the league in 2023. Your commitment, dedication, and desire to improve continues to contribute to the EDFL product. Every umpire plays a significant role in keeping football going and your contributions are valued by the EDFL team. I would also like to acknowledge the support of umpiring by EDFL clubs as they have a unique platform to assist us with recruiting and retaining more people in umpiring so it would be great to see more junior clubs getting involved. There are ever increasing possibilities as to where umpiring can take people so I would encourage anyone that is interested to take up the challenge. Now more than ever, getting more people involved in umpiring is vital to the ongoing success of football. Coaches I would like to extend the appreciation from the EDFL to all the coaches, mentors, and volunteers that assist with umpiring in the EDFL. There are a lot of passionate people involved in umpiring and your support makes the world of difference, especially to our younger umpires. The work of these people continues to allow umpires to develop themselves in their on-field performance, while also developing valuable lifelong skills. Senior Coaches Brett Pallini continued as senior coach for season 2023 with Alex Turner and Jack Gordon as his assistants. Their knowledge, experience, and passion were extremely valuable for the EDFL umpires. I would like to thank boundary umpire coaches Shane Mallia, Howard Campey, and Angus Drenen, and goal umpire coaches Tom Ennis, John Bladen, Bill Dale, and Jenna Green for their commitment and the countless hours that they dedicate to umpires in the EDFL. A special mention to Tom Ennis who is finishing up as the goal umpire coach with the EDFL. Tom has been involved with football for over 40 years, is an EDFL and EDFLUA life member, and has made a massive impact on the umpiring group. I am sure that we will still see him around the grounds but would like to pass on the thanks of the EDFL for all his work across the years. Bill Dale is also going to step back from his coaching role next year. We wish Bill all the best for his next pursuit and thank him for his great work coaching in the EDFL. Academy Coaches • AIA Academy – Lachlan Daly • Craigieburn – Steve Marrari and Rocky Tranquillo • Delahey – Ethan McCall and Howard Campey

• Ilim College – Lachlan Daly • Jacana – Nabil Yassine and Gavin Dovey • Moreland – Lachlan Daly and Angus Drenen • Sunbury – Daniel Wardley I would also like to recognise the work that Nabil Yassine and Adam Nahal do at Ilim College and AIA Academy. The partnerships we have with these schools are extremely valuable to the EDFL and we hope to continue to build these and hopefully work with additional schools in the coming years. Junior Coaches I would like to thank Lachlan Daly and Ethan McCall who stepped up as junior training coordinators in 2023. This was a great opportunity for them to develop their leadership skills and help impart their knowledge to the younger generation of umpires. Junior coaches Michael Knight and Matt O’Connor brought a high level of passion and knowledge to the program and must be thanked for their time and commitment. Opportunities for EDFL Umpires • EDFL umpires involved in AFL Vic matches throughout the season. • EDFL umpires umpired junior interleague matches. • AFL and VFL umpires attended senior training at Windy Hill for all three disciplines. • EDFL umpires participated in AFL Auskick during the season. AFL VIC Academy It was a different year for the Academy program with a lot of uncertainty as to the structure and operations of the program due to changes at AFL Victoria. As a league, we think it is vital to have a pathway program for young umpires who have aspirations to make umpiring a career. We are hopeful that there will be more certainty in this program next season. The EDFL had six representatives at the V/Line Cup which is a great recognition of the talent of the young umpires in the EDFL. Main Awards Hayden McDonald received the Ian Coates award as the best junior field umpire. Lachlan Cullen was awarded the EDFL Rising Star Award as the most promising young umpire in the EDFL. Jack Gordon was awarded the Umpire of the Year at the EDFL presentation night. Thanks It was fantastic to finish the first full season in the role and I would like to acknowledge the support of the EDFL staff and board members. There has been

significant focus and support in recruiting umpires and creating a more positive environment for umpires. The support of AFL Victoria has also been beneficial to umpire recruitment. I would like to particularly thank AFL Umpires Steve Piperno and Jamie Broadbent for giving up their time to come to EDFL training on multiple occasions to pass on wisdom to our umpires. Patrick Moloney and Ken Waters have played important roles in ensuring that the administration side of umpiring runs smoothly. Their work is often behind the scenes but is the reason that our umpires can get on the field and umpire every week. We continue to work with the EDFLUA, led by President Brendan Dye, to ensure that EDFL umpires are provided a positive environment where they can succeed and develop. A special thanks to the Cities of Hume, Moreland, Moonee Valley and Brimbank Councils, AFL, AFLVIC, Brad Teal Woodards Real Estate, 460degrees, Personal Graffiti, and most importantly our EDFL Clubs. Without the assistance of all these bodies we would not be able to operate effectively. I urge clubs, players, and spectators to continue to work with us to help get more people involved in umpiring. The environment and attitudes towards umpires are so important in trying to continue to grow umpiring numbers. Umpires are a big part of the football community and there are more pathways for umpires to make it a career pursuit in the future. We continue to look at ways to innovate and make umpiring more enjoyable. Michael Willcox Umpires Coordinator

Media Report Following a full season of footy and an ever-increasing media and communications output in community sport, the 2023 season was an exciting time to join the league. I’d firstly like to acknowledge my predecessor Adam Russell who left a strong media platform to build on and contributed an enormous amount over his time with the league as the Media Manager and contributor before then. With big shoes to fill, 2023 provided a learning curve as to how the media landscape continues to evolve at a rapid rate, while also utilising a fresh perspective I could bring into the league having not been involved with the media team before. Online Content The content delivered throughout the season remained consistent with some additions along the way as I did not want to take on too much with fewer volunteers in the written content space. With the increasing reliance on social media as a primary source of information, social media growth was a big focus in delivering informative and engaging content. All platforms experienced large amounts of growth with Instagram enjoying the largest increase in followers the league has had between January to November. The platform’s followers increased almost 13 per cent to eclipse the 10k mark in September reaching 43 per cent more accounts than January to November 2022. Facebook (6.8 per cent increase) also continued its steady online presence and is the biggest source of website traffic outside of organic reach.

The League’s Twitter / X account following also increased despite the shifting landscape and difficulty many accounts like the EDFL have in driving engagement. The EDFL Live App, powered by Stack Team App, provided an invaluable resource again for EDFL Media in season 2023 giving EDFL fans a convenient and user-friendly platform to access live scores, ladders, fixtures, and news on matchdays and throughout the week. The app received over 320,000 hits from the EDFL community within the season from April to September. The platform saw 300 new members joining the app as the EDFL team continues to strive in engaging with the EDFL fanbase. With many users accessing their news and information via the social media channels of the EDFL, website traffic dipped from 2022 numbers, but still received almost two million hits throughout the year. Filming & Match of the Day Broadcast Creating engaging and informative content is not possible without the action we see on the weekend. We were again fortunate enough to capture each of the 15 senior men’s games every weekend thanks to the extraordinary work of Andrew McLeish and the team at Sportscast Australia. Through rainy days and in every corner of the EDFL community, Sportcast operators brave it all to capture the action which is not only an invaluable media tool but also critical to coaches, players, clubs, fans, staff, and the tribunal as all aspects of the league review what took place on the weekend and start preparing for the week ahead.

From the ‘NXP Highlights’ to the ‘iFLY Melbourne Mark of the Week’ to the ‘Goal of the Week’ highlight packages, the content Sportscast produces are among the highest drivers of engagement on our online platforms. Cluch TV again worked with Sportscast to present the Nena and Pasadena Match of the Day each weekend, providing a user-friendly and easily accessible way for EDFL fans to watch the Match of the Day broadcast live via their smartphone or PC. The EDFL broadcasted 39 games in 2023 with 257,601 total minutes consumed by 12,800 avid EDFL fans in 32 countries. A particular highlight for Nena and Pasadena Match of the Day was the first ever standalone in-season women’s

Shearasun Brewing Company Thirds Grand Final

broadcast between eventual grand finalists Aberfeldie and Oak Park. It was incredible to see the viewing numbers soar beyond many of the men’s broadcasts and set the platform for more women’s games to be covered in the same capacity in 2024. Furthermore, the league also enjoyed another blockbuster festival of football at Windy Hill for Airport Toyota Women’s Grand Final day which attracted over 1600 views across the three games on top of an immense crowd in the stands at Windy Hill. And for those who couldn’t watch live, EDFL fans could always reliably tune into 98.9 North West FM to hear the call. Thank you to John Dosen and the North West FM team that got us to air every Saturday throughout the season, they are truly the heroes behind the scenes. Travis Poznachowski led the commentary team again this season in his ninth year with the EDFL media team, and was supported superbly by Todd Morris in a more prominent and regular play-by-play role during his second season with the team. A big thank-you also goes out to Patrick Morrow, Tara Murray, Tom Yore, Cole Harvey, Adem Saricaoglu, Brad Swain, and Ian Robinson who all made appearances on the broadcast throughout the year. We also thank Nena and Pasadena once again for their support of the Match of the Day broadcast and providing one of local football’s most sought out player of the match prize packs. The Match of the Day broadcast was also supported by iFLY Melbourne, Airport Toyota, and Sherrin in season 2023.

Podcasts The EDFL Tonight Podcast entered its eighth season in 2023 and started with a bang at the EDFL Season Launch. It sounded a little different from seasons gone with me trying to step into the big shoes left by Adam Russell’s omnipresence on the podcast for a number of years. Tara Murray stayed on as a co-host with Patrick Morrow returning for a number of episodes and Todd Morris adding valuable entertainment and insight. Budding podcaster Brandan Muhtari from St Albans also co-hosted a show and displayed some incredible broadcasting qualities for a 13-year-old. We made an effort to make the podcast a more player-driven show with as many guests as possible, while it was a pleasure to catch up weekly to talk about all things happening within the league. Overall, the EDFL Tonight Podcast featured 42 different guests totalling 8562 listens across 29 episodes. The NXP Post Game Show Podcast also received a strong listenership from those unable to tune in between 5:00-5:30pm on a Saturday evening thanks to 98.9 North West FM. With over 4600 hits across the season, we thank our senior coaches for the access and insight they give us each round, no matter the result. We thank all the loyal listeners of the show as we look to make some exciting changes to the show’s format in 2024.

the role as the league’s photographer at the start of the season and was a pivotal member of the EDFL team. Shaun captured awesome moments with images that feature prominently across all EDFL media streams and assist in telling the story of our great league. He was a pleasure to work with and engaged in an extraordinary amount of work with an extraordinary output, making my job a lot easier. Acknowledgements It’s fair to say my first year in the role certainly provided its fair share of challenges in the media and communications space, but the support of the EDFL staff and board certainly made a significant impact – especially former Media Manager Adem Saricaoglu who assisted greatly in my transition to the role and was a big ongoing support. I’d also like to thank all the clubs for being so easy to work with and supportive with all media endeavours. Of course a big thanks goes to the EDFL community who are the reason we continue to deliver engaging and informative content – I can’t wait for the exciting content in the pipeline for 2024! AFL Victoria Development Report In 2023, AFL Football was well a truly back around the state. It also saw the return of AFL Victoria-led programs. The year kicked off with a few new initiatives across the region. Term 1 Auskick was introduced as a way for new participants to give the game a go. Across the region we held five T1 Auskick Centres. They were Aberfeldie All Girls, Ilim College At School, Broadmeadows and Surrounds, Hillside and Surrounds, and Kalkallo and Surrounds. Across all five we had 89 new participants to the game. This was a huge start! We also ran several ‘Come and Try’ days across the region to help clubs recruit new players for their junior programs. Schools 2023 saw a massive target put in front of us. The message was strong, and it emphasised the importance of getting football into schools. Our target was to reach 100 per cent of schools aligned with the EDFL region from Term 4 2022 through to Term 3 2023. Our relationship with schools is very strong, which ultimately allowed us to run many programs throughout the region involving face to-face interactions with over students across schools. Our offering of ‘Primary Play’ has once again proven to be quite popular with us visiting a few schools on multiple occasions. This year also saw Essendon Players make in-school appearances for the first time since Covid which gave the kids a great experience. This is off the back of our Community Camp which was held in Castlemaine and Bendigo this year. It has been great seeing the players out in the community, as it’s a great opportunity for the kids to see their heroes up close. Our overall result for this year was 77 per cent, just shy of the 100 per cent target, but we will look to shift the focus in 2024 to schools who need a program, rather than just go into a school to run a program. We will shift our focus and still deliver football to every school – it will just look a little bit different. We are excited to see how this develops in the coming months.

clubs and helped foster the connection between the two. We will continue to drive this each year moving forward. Alternate Formats This year, we have changed our Term 3 offerings. We have introduced ‘Auskick at School’ which sees us going out to schools after they have finished and running an hour of Auskick games for students while they are still at school. We feel that it is a great way to engage with new participants as we are in a safe environment and we are bringing football to them, as opposed to them coming down to a local oval and travelling. We had four Term 3 centres across the region at Holy Cross PS, Roxburgh Rise PS, Sirius College, Fawkner PS as well as an All-Girls supported by Coburg Districts and Essendon FC. This saw an additional 127 participants. This is a huge result! Term 4 has been a quieter Term for us as we start 2024 planning. We are still running programs in schools along with after school Auskick’s. We are looking at returning to Ilim after the success of not only their Term 1, but also their Term 2 community programs. Plans are to build that out into a Junior Football Club soon. We are also running a program at Aitken Hill Primary School in Craigieburn. This school is typically a heavy soccer school in terms of participation, but so far, we have 21 children interested in playing! Our final initiative that we are rolling out in 2023 is our rebranded Junior X. It is still our Summer Hub; however, we have broken it down further and launched our Superkick Program. This is still a modified version of the game which targets 8-12-year-olds. They take part in a fun training-based program for five weeks with modified games at the end of each session. Each week they focus on a different skill, then follow up with nine-a-side games on a rectangular grid style grounds 80m x 40m. This is like Junior X, just with a bit more of a training focus. The games go for 45 minutes with

a 15-minute lead in. It is all done in 60 minutes. Alongside our Superkick, we have a 60-minute Auskick program. This is targeted at our 4–7-year-olds, who are new to the game and just want to have some fun! We will introduce Superkick into Community Centres in 2024, with the hope of preparing the top-aged participants for Juniors in 2025! We have had great uptake on both programs at our Summer Hub and we look forward to watching it grow in 2024. Appreciation Congratulations to everyone and thank you for your support in 2023. We hope this year was great for you all & I look forward to seeing how we go in 2024! Please have a restful break over the summer and we will be ready to kick start 2024 with you all soon! Shannon Gore AFL Victoria Participation Coordinator

Auskick Auskick in 2023 saw 2755 kids participate across the region, this is up on 2022 numbers. Once again, our Auskick coordinators and helpers put together a massive effort to ensure that the kids stayed engaged and that their sessions were fun! Well done to those volunteers for their effort. Post-Auskick season saw the introduction of our new transition initiative – Under 7s. This program was targeted at top-aged Auskickers who are ready to transition into Junior Football and U8s in 2024. We saw over 227 boys and 21 girls across 26 teams and two venues compete in U8 style rules wearing club jumpers. Having several junior clubs in attendance and providing those club jumpers gave the kids the chance to experience what juniors would be like moving forward. This is a massive win as we have created a solid pathway for our Auskickers into Junior

2023 Essendon District Football League Annual Report

Grand Final Review Keilor capped off one of the more dominant Strathmore Community Bank Premier Division seasons with a well deserved premiership to cap off their perfect season.

McGuane said both sides had periods of control in the Grand Final and he felt it was the third quarter that would prove to be the difference in the end.

“You get to work with the group at your disposal,” he said. “This is the way you should train, quick entry, embracing imperfections and the group we had in front of the ball.

Undefeated throughout the regular season, the Blues had an average winning margin of more than 50 points.

“I thought we cracked them and I thought it would take a very good team to beat this team, playing the hard contested brand we play.

They smashed Pascoe Vale in the Semi Final, with Strathmore doing the same thing to the Panthers in the Preliminary Final.

“We are a very good running side. When you have high octane type performances like we have, we want to play chaos, play quick, if the ball is alive a lot you have to get from contest to contest which we are good at.

“We kept kicking winning scores. We averaged 133 throughout the year for that to stand true in a final, it does get tough and it does get hard to hit the scoreboard, goes to show what we put in 10 months ago.”

The Mores were full of confidence having had a strong second half of the season in their quest for back-to-back titles. The Blues hit the scoreboard early as they made the most of their forward entries.

“I thought we had a number of winners right across the board which is why we ran out quite comprehensive winners at game’s end.“

The margin was 11 points at quarter time and three goals at half time in favour of the Blues . The second half however, would be all Keilor. They led by five goals at three quarter time, before their running ability came to the fore in the last.

Matthew Clark kicked five goals for the winners, while Kane Barbuto kicked four and Christos Kosmas and Nathan Colenso kicked three each.

The margin blew out to 61 points, before the Mores kicked a couple late. The final score was 20.7 (127) to 11.9 (75) showing the difference between the Blues and the other teams this year.

McGuane said it could have gone to a number of players.

Keilor coach Mick McGuane said what they had achieved this year was pretty significant. “They’re a great bunch of boys,” he said. “I don’t think a lot of people in the footy industry realise how difficult it is to go through undefeated. “I thought our back half of the year was really strong and solid. We had to step up against a team that was in fantastic form and match hardened. We had one game in about 28 days, I think. “It was a testament to the players’ discipline, the way we worked and what we worked on in that period, without playing games.”

Barbuto won his second Reg Rose Medal for the best player in the Grand Final, after winning it in 2019.

“I thought [Nick] O’Kearney was stiff,” he said. “I loved the way that Kane went about it, we isolated him with the right match up early. “O’Kearney finished with close to 40, Clark kicked five. Colenso replaced [Damien] Cavka and kicked three and did what he did in front of the ball. “Kosmas, is the brother in law of Cavka, and he had a lot to play for.” The result is a long way from the start of preseason when the Blues had a number of more experienced players either retire or go to lower levels. McGuane said it would have been easy to sit back and look at who they lost, instead of making change.

For nine of the group, it’s the second time they have been part of the premiership that capped off a perfect season. For Barbuto, it was premiership number three for the Blues. For McGuane, number four. “You don’t go down that path of how many you can get,” McGuane said. “A person reminded me today, post game, that you’ve been to Tassie and coached premiers and championship [undefeated] teams and you’ve done it twice in the space of four years [at Keilor]. “It’s something we couldn’t do in our 137 year history, doing a lot right and we believe in what we know and what we do, to give these young boys a taste of what victory is like at the pointy end of the season, pretty proud of the work we’ve put in.”

2023 Essendon District Football League Annual Report

Grand Final Review Deer Park has added their first senior EDFL premiership cup to their trophy cabinet after a 21.14 (140) to 6.8 (44) thumping against West Coburg in the Rookie Me Division One Grand Final. The Lions were coming into the game as the favourites after handing the Burgers their first loss of the season in convincing fashion in the Semi Final and were quick out of the gates. Lachlan Smart bagged the first goal of the day after a nine-minute stalemate to begin the game. A second 50-metre penalty sent Deer Park to the goal square as Luke Goater opened his account and kicked Deer Park’s second. Todd Elton was collected high inside 50 and duly dobbed the set shot to round out their three first-quarter goals. West Coburg were held scoreless in the first quarter and trailed Deer Park by 22 points heading into the second quarter. Damian Galofaro got West Coburg on the board eight minutes into the second quarter as the Burgers kept the contest relatively even with just one point added to the margin at the main break. Deer Park threatened to burst open the dam wall at times in the third quarter, but did so emphatically in the fourth quarter piling on 11 goals.

It was party time for the Lions as they neared the 100-point margin before eventually taking out the premiership by 96 points. Nash Holmes was awarded the David McWilliam Medal for best on ground honours for a superb performance in Deer Park’s engine room, complemented by powerful midfielders Jack Dorgan and Wade Lees who shut down the dangerous Thomas Baravi. Kier Bol was staunch in defence keeping Omar Saad goalless, while Bailey Morrish was pivotal in setting up a lot of the Lions’ drive from their back half. Goater was available from VFL duties and continued his finals form with six goals, while Elton (four goals), Scott Greenhough (two goals), and Smart (two goals) each kicked multiples. It was a complete team performance from Deer Park and the culmination of a season of hard work. Coach Heath Scotland told Star Weekly they were confident they could get the job done on the biggest stage. “We didn’t really settle with our best side for most of the year,” he said. “We knew every team rose to play us during the year. For us getting the runs on the board and getting a system, the confidence come that pointy end of the season that our game style matches and stands up.

“I’m just pleased for the boys that they executed what we were rehearsing all year and extremely disappointed for some of those guys who have got us here and we couldn’t fit in the side.” While the celebrations will continue on for a few days, the club will quickly turn its attention to next season in the top flight. “We’ll get over the celebrations and try and maintain our playing list. Hopefully all those will go down a point or two and we can target and recruit. “We have to build from grassroots. We can’t keep adding players in and be on the points threshold every year.”

Grand Final Review Oak Park has emphatically booked their return to Division One with a dominant Grand Final display capping off an incredible season. The Oakers led at every change and stormed home with the flag well in sight to run away 20.15 (135) to 8.8 (56) victors. The first half of the contest was more of an arm wrestle than the scoreboard might have suggested with the game played between the arcs for the majority of the first half. Sunbury Kangaroos were able to score the first goal of the game with Jack Vivian slotting a set shot from just inside 50 three minutes into the contest. It’d be another 10 minutes before the next goal was scored and it took some Zachary Graham magic to break through for Oak Park. We’d enter time on in the first quarter as Oak Park started to muster repeat entries and score a pair of goals through breakaway efforts from Danny Rajab and Anthony De Lorenzi. As Oak Park started to find space in their forward half, they would bang home two late goals to hold a 25-point lead at the first change. Sunbury Kangaroos had to respond first and they did after Rhys Magin was awarded a 50-metre penalty for an easy shot on goal bringing the margin back down to 20.

Despite their response, neither team was able to gain the ascendancy with the game continuing to be played between the arcs.

Ryan Smith was immense through the midfield breaking lines with his foot speed and enjoyed the first use Hirsi Twomey provided in the ruck.

Oak Park were unable to capitalise on a few looks at goal before Dylan Cunningham pounced on an opportunity to send the ball goal bound and finished a delightful dribbler to bring the Sunbury Kangaroos back to within 17 points.

The Oakers boasted 11 goal scorers with seven kicking multiples led by Lachlan Ronaldson and Graham with three each.

Clayton McCartney kicked one of the goals of the day to halt Sunbury Kangaroos’ run and extend the margin back out to four goals as we entered time on. McCartney stayed in the game with a bit of brilliance to set up Travis Anderson in front of goal for back to back majors. A goal either way rounded out the quarter which saw Oak Park take a 32-point lead into the main break. Sunbury Kangaroos have made a habit of fighting back all season, but it wasn’t to be with Oak Park powering away to kick six unanswered in the third term and finish with 12 goals to four in the second half to earn the premiership and promotion. Jedd Taylor was adjudged best on ground by the umpires and awarded the Ian Price Medal kicking two goals and impacting the game all over the ground with his utility capabilities.

For Sunbury Kangaroos, Team of the Year forward pockets Brody Watts and Rhys Magin kicked two goals each, while Mitch Kook never stopped providing run out of their defensive half. Oak Park has gone one better than 2022, won both the Senior Men’s and Women’s flags, and after dropping just two games this year will be back in Division One!

2023 Essendon District Football League Annual Report

Grand Final Review Essendon Doutta Stars took out their second Airport Toyota Women’s Division One Grand Final with their eighth win on the trot. Greenvale and Essendon Doutta Stars were evenly matched coming into this contest with the Jets gaining the advantage in their first two matchups, but their most recent contest was a comfortable win for Douttas amid their winning streak. It was a chess battle in the early stages of this game with Greenvale unable to capitalise on their chances and control of the game. The Jets kicked four behinds in the opening term and held Douttas scoreless, but it’d be a role reversal in the second quarter. Neve Crowley booted the first goal of the game with a well-timed forward foray that led her into an open goal square. Douttas’ intensity was sky high and they were able to get the second goal of the game on the back of a Jessie Hulett crumb.

response of their own and who better to provide it than Hulett who kicked two goals in a couple of minutes from set shots.

Zoe Hardiman and Terira Fry were pivotal in Greenvale’s midfield playing big parts in their dominance through various stages of the game.

Restoring that 10-point lead at the final change, Douttas piled on the next three goals to run away with a 27-point victory and the flag.

For the second time, the Division One Premiership cup will be heading to Nipper Jordan Oval!

It was going to take a team effort to ground this Jets outfit that had been dominant for so much of the year, and that’s exactly what they got. Crowley turned in a wonderful Captain’s performance and took out the best on ground honours with a big day in the ruck, displaying a high level of mobility to set up well behind the ball and continually make each contest. Hulett was another standout with four vital goals and a looming presence in the forward 50 for Essendon Doutta Stars.

They had all the momentum and took a 10-point lead into the main break with Greenvale held goalless. Troy Newton’s side needed a lift after the break, and that’s exactly what they got with a beautiful finish from Nicolette Paschalis on the boundary opening their account. Less than a minute later, Greenvale’s hero from a couple of weeks ago Talia Motta won the contest at ground level and handed the Jets the lead five minutes into the second half. With the game in the balance, Essendon Doutta Stars needed a
