Jayantha Chandrasiri

Jayantha Chandrasiri Is a well respected veteran in the field of performing arts. Debuting with stage drama titled “Saraswathi”, he has seen many of his stage dramas, tele dramas and films being awarded and appreciated continuously, both locally and internationally.

His stage drama “Mora” showcased at the 1987 National Drama Festival was so successful by winning seven awards, including those for best production, script, actor and actress. His stage drama “Ath” received many appreciations for innovative techniques that were used.

“Weda Hamine” tele drama that was produced in 1989 and subsequent “Dandubasnamanaya” and “Akala Sandhya” were extremely successful.

So were the cinematic creations of “Agnidahaya” that swept the boards with many awards in 2002, “Guerilla Marketing” and “Samanala Sandhwaniya”.

Though limited in number, Jayantha Chandrasiri has a string of successful productions owing to sheer talent, perseverance and commitment to creativity, quality and originality.

How did your foray in to the world of performing arts happened?

In 1978, I was fortunate to meet Actor-Trainer, Dr. Norbert Jan Myer from Germany, the then President of World Drama Association, who was invited to Sri Lanka by the Goethe Institute. I was selected in to a team of 25 young aspiring actors, out of about 800 who showed interest. Some others who were with me in that group included Kamal Addararachchi, Sriyantha Mendis, Udaya Rohan de Silva and Chitra Kalubowila.

The workshops were intense and we had to dedicate ourselves to the task. We learnt drama techniques for 7 days a week. The first production that was born out of this training and exposure was ‘Aney Abilick’. From the techniques and ropes I learnt during those three months, I was empowered to do more dramas.

Professionally, I started my career in journalism as a Sub Editor of “Irida” newspaper in 1980. Later, I joined the “Nawaliya” newspaper, associating with its cinema pages.

How did you get trained to excel in many different forms of performing arts?

I believe I was interactively nurtured by different fields that I got engaged in. Through journalism, my stage dramas were enriched and vice versa. It is a big challenge and I think time management is a key.

Through the training I gained from Dr. Norbert Jan Myer of Germany, I was able to showcase my talents and capture the attention of audiences and veterans of the field.

After showcasing “Mora” in 1987 which was a turning point in terms of recognition, I won a scholarship to Berlin, in East Germany. I also received another scholarship from Somalatha Subasinghe to study about children’s drama in Sweden and Norway.

I was also offered another scholarship to the United States of America by Dr. Klaus Fidler. This gave me ample opportunity to view many dramas in 6 states and freely meet the cast and crew. This was a

golden opportunity for me as a youth to interact with producers, directors, actors and actresses.

Those opportunities came my way, because of talent I displayed and recognition earned. What I received as gifts from those who were proficient in drama, I developed. I was persevering and I did more and more.

What is the difference in usages among journalism, stage dramas, tele-dramas and cinema?

Mass communication that includes journalism is not a performing art. Others, stage and tele dramas and cinema are three different mediums of performing arts.

They differ from one to the other, but are connected through artistes and audiences by threads of performance, artistry and ingenuity.

Stage drama still is the best mode of performing arts. Though there was a debate on usage of tele drama as a performing art, through my own productions I have proven its value.

Cinema is a form that provides many opportunities to create. For example, “Agnidahaya” was catalyst in bringing out a plethora of emotions, dark themes and societal situations.

What characteristics do you attribute your success to?

I study and research well on all my productions. I do not undertake two or three parallel productions at a time and there is a good time gap, may be two or three years among each of them.

When engaging in a production, those concerned must delve deep in to facts and not indulge in myth alone. Research is vital. This is especially so in productions with a historic perspective. Poetic license is permissible for comedy or farce.

For example, for my latest upcoming movie, “Maha Raja Gemunu”, I read all possible sources to elicit facts. These include historical writings such as Mahavamsa, Choolawamsa, Rasavahini and other books that shed light on different perspectives of King Dutugemunu’s life.

Is there a lucrative career for youth in performing arts?

There is, if the youth take it seriously. A career can be carved from it.

There are careers that can be financially satisfying, for those who can excel and possess right skills.

This depends on each youth and the ambition that each youth has. They have to take this form of art seriously and pursue it to uphold the industry, rather than being detrimental.

Even in my case, more I indulged in performing arts and produced dramas and tele-dramas in a genuine way, as I gained recognition, local and overseas opportunities came my way to expand my horizons and I received scholarships and even prize money at national awards.

There is a flurry of activity in all three mediums. Tele dramas see the light of day regularly. Television is popular among youth. In the movieworld, technology lends an added impetus and wizardry.

What would you describe as being more conducive to bring out the talents of youth?

The television industry, as there are is a lot of talent. There is always an opportunity for fresh faces for new roles and also in terms of smart talent. Recently I met a youth who had done 35 tele-dramas within a short span of time. I have only done 12 to date spanning my entire career.

The world of film also has potential. The themes are generally common-place like love, hate, jealousy and heroism.

What message would you deliver to the young people?

Do not take performing arts lightly, make it a way of life and stay committed. Read more books, even e-books. There are easy and faster modes of gaining knowledge through internet than our days. Study and preparation is necessary to gain success in any field.

Performing arts is about acting, singing, playing music, dancing, telling jokes or otherwise entertaining the public by amusing, provoking and generally delighting them.

While certificates of passing various examinations are useful, the real test of one's capability is to demonstrate the level of performing skill possessed.

Actors master the ability to be people other than themselves, via skills such as vocal dexterity and control over their physical actions.

Instrumentalists and vocalists express emotions through music and try to achieve precision, harmony and an attractive or interesting tone.

Dancers interpret and convey a narrative or abstract idea or emotions through movement.

Although their fields of expression are different, there are many factors they share in common such as:

Auditioning - unlike in academic skills, auditioning enables establishing the true level, quality and capability of the skills possessed.

Training - all performing artists need to undergo significant training to learn the skills required.

Practicing- only repeated practice will hone the skills to acceptable performance levels.

Rehearsing- preparing for a specific event for a specific audience.

Performing - the challenge of facing an audience and impressing their managers, directors, conductors or choreographers

Is it worthwhile?

Opportunities for performing artists are expected to be plentiful in coming years. This is true worldwide including Sri Lanka due to a greater public awareness through TV and video presentations as well as expansions in cable networks and internet.

Salaries of performing artists vary tremendously. Those who make it to the pinnacle of their profession can command immense remuneration as for instance successful Hollywood and Bollywood performers. In addition, there can be significant

income through advertising and public appearances.

However, there are those who just perform for their own enjoyment and to get a thrill from entertaining people.

Will you succeed?

Talent alone is not enough.

Performers who succeed spend years learning the nuances of their medium of expression. Those who do well are creative, expressive individuals who are passionate about their craft.

In addition to talent, they need patience, perseverance, stamina and determination. For example, they will need to repeat a scenario until it is perfect, perform roles or play music that does not excite, get accustomed to criticism and rejection and learn to put on a show regardless of being exhausted or in a bad mood.

How to proceed

There are several specialized educational institutions in Sri Lanka that provide information, offer courses and connect artistes to each other and performing organizations.

Some of these include University of Visual & Performing Arts, Sri Lanka Performing Arts Association, David Academy of Performing Arts and Centre for Performing Arts (CPA) Sri Lanka. Schools are located all over the country so those interested can access these resources within their locality.

A degree from a specialized institute can launch you toward a performing arts career or show you if you are really suited to this profession.

However, while a formal education is recommended, it is not essential in many of the performing arts.

Once training is completed, having contacts can help. As you get more experienced and get to know more people, more opportunities will open up. Networking skills will serve you just as well in performing arts as they do in other careers, but continuing success will depend on public appreciation of your performances.

At the higher levels of these professions, you'll probably need to become a member of an appropriate performers' union.

Challenging a commonly held perception that there are no careers paths for youth in dance, Prof.

Kaluarachchi said “performing arts is about how you present yourself. Therefore, it is important to network at every opportunity and keep your finger on the pulse of industry. There may be an opportunity for employment at the most unusual places, and by keeping your mind open and body ready, you will be able to make the most of your individual talents.”

Instances are there when even before graduating students get offers to perform commercially and earn more as dancing troupes. He was quick to add that attending auditions, collaborating with other artists and putting on one’s own shows are all part of a performer's lifestyle.

Prof. Ariyarathne Kaluarachchi, former Dean of Faculty of Dance and Drama at University of Visual and Performing Arts, shares insights in to different ‘drum-beats’ and enigmatic stage of drama, as youth tread the stage in life searching for better pathways, trying to carve out a career.

Having just relinquished his post as Dean, now spends more time promoting dance and drama in performing arts. He joined the University of Visual and Performing Arts in 1980 as a drama teacher, from where he went to Calcutta for his post graduate studies on a Commonwealth Scholarship.

According to Prof. Kaluarachchi, Bhartha Natyam is one of the classical forms of dance in Sri Lanka.

There are also Kandyan dances (Uda Rata Natum) that include Ves dance, Naiyandi dance, Udekki dance and Pantheru dance. There are many other forms of dance such as low country dances (Pahatharata Netum), Sabaragamu dances (Sabaragamu Netum), devil dances and folk dances. Each has a distinct style and elements that distinguish one from the other.

“Among many careers available are to become an actor, a dancer and theatre director. With further qualifications, they can become arts administrators, broadcast presenters, lecturers, teachers and theatre stage managers.

Most common employers of performing arts graduates include the government, arts oriented organizations, education institutions and voluntary organizations,” he further stated.

Prof. Kaluarachchi is of opinion that while drama schools help to improve techniques, a degree in drama covers topics such as scriptwriting and theatre design in a more theoretical approach, giving graduates a thorough grounding in the subject and widening their career options in a highly competitive field.

New frontiers “Even for those who don't make it to the stage or big screen, a degree in drama opens doors to equally rewarding careers such as an arts consultant, set designer or visual artist,” he added.

Kaluarachchi said, “techniques in both Oriental and Western ballet are taught. Students can study an either discipline. Forms of dance include ‘Mudra Natya’, first performed by Rabindranath Tagore in 1943 which is performed with variations that incorporate local dance moves. Students try to emulate the grand master and audiences are shown different versions. Those who performed this dance include Chitrasena and Panibaratha, my gurus. Ballet Opera is classified as ‘Geetha Natya’ and ‘Mudra Natya’.”

Dancing to camera “We introduced a new technique is 2013, to train dancers to perform to camera. This means that every move and nuance has to be synchronized with the camera. We have observed that most performances are lost when a dancer is not focused accurately and expressions are not captured accordingly. These techniques facilitate a television viewer to experience real essence and meaning of a dance. These trends and styles are in line with international dance standards that give audiences the best in terms of talent, technique and technology,” he further described.

Negative experiences enrich drama Crammed in to a small classroom, and eager to learn the fine art of drama, first and second year students of the Tower Hall Drama and Theatre School have higher aspirations to make it ‘big’ in the larger stages of life.

Dressed in uniform t-shirts and pants the young men and women are fully engrossed in what their lecturer, Jayantha Bandara has to say. Jayantha incidentally is the principle character in Professor Ediriweera Sarathandra’s stage drama “Sinhabahu” and is sharing his expertise with the students.

Students are taught interesting subjects such as Greek and Roman theatre, Sanskrit theatre, theatre practices, modern Indian theatre and Far East, trends in the 20th century, play writing, direction and production, ancillary theatre arts, appreciation and criticism.

“These students not only learn the theoretical part of drama and theatre, but also engage in practical activities. They had the privilege of staging a drama at Al Ariyas theatre in the city of Cairo in Egypt,” states Douglas Siriwadana, Director General of Tower Hall Theatre Foundation.

Hailing from the war-torn Vavuniya area is 21 year old Sudharshana Pradeep Samaranayake. He speaks eloquently about his lifeexperiences, how the war milieu has made him resilient, yet dream of better things.

“I experienced the bitterness of war that ravaged Sri Lanka for the past 30 years. We grew up living a nightmare. And now the dream of having a new life and new opportunities has dawned and has become a reality. Drama is now my life” he enthuses.

“The dark-side of life was ever present when I was growing up.

I have learnt only a few subjects in school as teachers were always absent. Sinhala, Political Science and Drama were three subjects I managed to learn. I developed a passion for drama during those volatile days. After learning about opportunity to study drama and theatre, I came all the way to Colombo so that I can pursue drama as a profession in future,” he says.

He also wants to take drama to Vavuniya and make the youth there

love it as much as he does. He is happy that a drama workshop was held recently in Vavuniya, making his dream of sharing drama with the rural youth a reality.

“One day I hope to be a Director,” he says.

Thilini Kaushalya, 21, wants to be a drama teacher. For her too, the war-torn background was the stage setting in her childhood and teen years, whilst studying at Ampara.

Public performances Two of his works “Sakkaya Dhitti”, and “Bera Handa” were staged as guest performances at the State Drama Festival in 2012 and 2013, respectively. These drama festivals gave students valuable exposure whilst opening them to discerning audiences.

Students of this higher diploma course can opt to continue their education another two years and obtain a Bachelor of Education (Drama and Theatre) degree from the Open University of Sri Lanka through its Faculty of Education. It is recognized as the only specialized course in Sri Lanka in the field of drama and theatre.

“Our aim through this Higher Diploma is to make sure these students become worthy members of society who can creatively use their talents, skills and qualifications in drama, theatre and education. People do not really know the hardships of these students who come to this school from all parts of the country. They somehow find money to pay and have a lot of expectations in life.

Society should ideally champion students like these who have talents and whose skills can be honed to keep alive the rich traditions of drama in Sri Lanka,” he opined.

Sitting beneath a gigantic painting at his office, surrounded by interesting artefacts and designs, well-known sculptor and artist Prof. Sarath Chandrajeewa, Dean of the Faculty of Visual Arts, University of Visual and Performing Arts, shares some views on avenues open for youth.

“During the 1970s when I was a student at the Institute of Aesthetic Studies, ceramic design was a subsidiary subject. At that time, I was boarded at Ja-Ela. Those days, Ambalammulla in Seeduwa, along the Colombo-Negombo main road, was a potter’s village. The vision of rural village earthenware while passing daily held a certain attraction for me.

Due to this reason, I used to go during the week-ends to help native potters on their turning wheels and kilns. It inspired me,” he recalls.

Many years later, he heads an institution that tries to bring out the inherent creativity of youth and to guide them to make use of such talents in a productive manner. The University of Visual and Performing Arts is as a ‘kiln of creativity’.

For many students at school level, Visual Arts is simply drawing and painting. At University it encompasses more.

“We teach the design elements, theory, art and the history. It is up to the students to engage in all classroom sessions and benefit from the wealth of expertise of lecturers and derive inspiration from their lives and milieu,” said Prof. Chandrajeewa.

The creative industry The industry that a student of art steps in to is classified as the creative industry.

“Our aim is to produce creative artistes and even writers with practical knowledge, who can critique works of art. We want Sri Lankans to be equipped with knowledge and expertise, so that they can be on par with their peers on a global platform,” he added.

Elaborating on career opportunities available, Prof. Chandrajeewa said “there are a host of interesting jobs that a graduate qualified in visual arts can get in to. There is the dynamic field of advertising and design, which has a host of interesting areas such as design of furniture, jewellery and also the fashion industry itself. Then there is beauty culture, which we call wearable art. Teaching art also offers good career opportunities. Writing about art to become well known art critiques is also a good career path, as there is a dearth of good writers at present. Many global publications such as magazines and newspapers retain the services of designated writers to critique art. There is also a lot of scope in packaging and interior design.”

“In pottery, a student can become a studio potter or an industrial potter,” he further added.

Paths to take In our society there are a host of creative minds that can be nurtured.

They need to be well moulded to bring out their inherent talents and skills. It is then that the local creative industry also will grow in strength.

“The students who wish to enter the university must complete their A/Ls and be successful at an aptitude test.

The Z score applies in accordance to UGC regulations and this sometimes is a barrier for the inherently talented students to enter. There is a lot of output in terms of talent stemming from hand craft, but the essence of creativity is in the mind,” he opined.

Some of the courses on offer at the visual arts university include painting, sculpture, visual communication design, advertising, typography, illustration, visual formats, photography, multi-disciplinary design, furniture design, interior design, multimedia art using computer software, web design, film making, textile and variable arts and garments.

Excerpts from an interview conducted with Mr. B.R. Dassanayake, former Dean of Faculty of Music at the University of Visual and Performing Arts and his successor, Mr. Kumara Liyanawaththa the incumbent Dean.

University of Visual and Performing Arts enrols student from across the country, even providing hostel facilities. The university conducts four year degree programmes in music to which the minimum entry requirement is 3 passes at the GCE Advanced Level examination, including music as a subject with a credit pass for it. Selection is based on the marks obtained at the practical examination conducted by the university and Z score marks. Each four year programme culminates with a research dissertation during the final year, upon which students graduate with a Bachelor of Performance Arts (BPA) degree.

Popular career options for those graduating with a degree in Performance Arts include the teaching profession at government and international schools, media institutions such as television and radio networks as well as government institutions involved in cultural affairs. In addition, graduates can also develop their own careers as free-lance

performers, instrumentalists and composers in the field of music.

The university boasts of a distinguished alumni that include artistes like Victor Ratnayake, Sanath Nandasiri, Gunadasa Kapuge, Prof. Amara Ranatunga, Rohana Weerasinghe, Bandula Wijeweera, Edward Jayakody, Indika Upamali and Nelu Adikari, to name a few.

Special degree programmes in North Indian music and South Indian music, separately, are designed to meet the demand of those seeking a career in North Indian or South Indian classical music (vocal/ instrumental) with specialisation in accordance with existing disciplinary studies in Performing Arts.

A special degree programme in Western music has been introduced with the prime objective being to impart on to undergraduates practical and theoretical knowledge, awareness and professional training including Symphony and Opera.

Applied music in mass communication performs a vital task as cinema, radio and television

information and communication technology are interlinked with mass communication. A special degree programme in applied music has been designed to facilitate them, by developing applied music and communication skills by creating various types of novel compositions.

There is also a BPA degree programme in Ethno music. It establishes identities in diverse cultures and their integration with the Sinhalese culture. It is a programme that also entails extensive field research and other studies.

The scientific study of music and comparative study of music are included in a special degree programme in Musicology.

Students at the university have the option of selecting any one of such six degree programmes.

Apart from the University of Visual and Performing Arts, students who wish to pursue a career in music can also obtain recognised qualifications from other educational institutions, including Belwood, which offers Diplomas in music.

A proper understanding of the scope of mental health issues, westernization of our country, breakdown of traditional family system, emotional scars visible to all as a result of a brutal war and a more conscientious younger generation concerned about others wellbeing has led to this increased interest. At the same time to say “I’m studying Psychology” does sound impressive and many misguided youth enter this field for the wrong reasons. There also are a group of people who are unhappy with their lives and believe that studying psychology will help them sort out their inner demons!

It is definitely a very fulfilling career. Helping someone in emotional distress brings great satisfaction. Boredom is never an issue considering how diverse people’s problems are. However, it’s not all rosy and sometimes dealing with constant problems of others can lead to mental fatigue of Therapists themselves. So make sure that you have the right personality of being caring and compassionate, yet mentally strong enough to handle tough situations.

Whatever the reasons for deciding to pursue this area of study the common characteristic of all who aspire to do so is the need to help someone. Therefore, a proper framework for these wellmeaning individuals to further their career in the proper way and not be misled by false pretences and fads is a necessity.

Counsellors Someone who lends a kind ear.

A person to whom you can spend time with and share your problems in confidentiality. More importantly someone who will provide sound practical advice and guidance. Many schools, universities and organizations have counsellors and non-specific nature of their task means that their qualifications are sometimes vague or in most cases non-existent. This is not to say they are bad counsellors, as anyone who is kind, patient and practical can fulfil this role to some extent. When considering those who work as counsellors you will realise that most are either experienced teachers or similar professionals with an aptitude for the job rather than being properly qualified. Some have diplomas in related fields.

Many institutes provide diplomas in counselling or diplomas in counselling psychology. Although these will provide a foundation on which to base your work, always inquire as to what practical component there is, as many so called “counselling” diplomas only provide lectures as a form of teaching.

This is akin to attending lectures to learn to swim!

Psychologists This is a more exact science than counselling. Psychologists go beyond the realm of a counsellor and provide “Psychotherapy” or talking therapies. There are different schools of psychotherapy including Psychodynamic psychotherapy popularized by Sigmund Freud which is losing popularity and “Cognitive Behaviour Therapy “ which looks at present circumstances rather than childhood experiences as being the cause of problems.

To become a Psychologist you would have to initially complete a BSc in Psychology which is a degree lasting at least three years. Thereafter, you can choose a career path in various sub specialities of Psychology. If you wish to practice as a Clinical Psychologist with actual patient care, moving in to an MSc in Clinical Psychology with a lot of practical experience is ideal.

However, if you wish to enter into Educational Psychology, Business Psychology or even Sports Psychology reputed Universities will be able to provide post graduate training programmes. Many top Psychologists have PhDs in their respective subspeciality and this should ideally be your long term goal.

It is sad to see that due to Sri Lanka’s lax regulation in this area, many with diplomas in Psychology or a BSc in psychology are seen practicing as “ Clinical Psychologists “. This is unlikely to be allowed in future with more and more concern on patient rights.

Therefore, you should make sure to become properly qualified if your dream is to become a Psychologist.

Psychiatrists These are Doctors who have decided to pursue matters of the mind rather than body. Commonly known as “Shrinks”

they are trained in Psychological aspects of patient care as well as pharmacological (medicinal) care. To put it simply the difference between a Psychologist and a Psychiatrist is that a Psychiatrist in addition to providing counselling and psychotherapy can prescribe medication for mental health problems. This is an oversimplification and certainly not the only difference and depends on the individual therapist who will bring a different set of skills to help patients with mental health issues.

In real life situations it is not uncommon for a Psychiatrist to seek the help of a Psychologist to help with talking therapy for a patient and for a Psychologist to consult a Psychiatrist if they feel medication is needed for a patient. For those of you who wish to become a Psychiatrist remember that initial enrolment in a good medical faculty and obtaining a sound medical education is the start.

As a last piece of advice, it must be stressed that one shall not get fooled by a fancy banner or impressive name of a course but look into the course content, number of practical hours within a course and whether your future goals will be met by enrolling into that particular course of study.

If Thomas Alva Edison did not think up of a long lasting electric light bulb lighting up the dark nights, the convenience we enjoy while studying till late in the night or having a good time visiting friends for dinner or even watching a T-20 match played under lights from home may not be there for us.

What were unthinkable a century and half ago have become matter of fact things today.

Simple yet great Some ideas like those of Edison may have required a lot of technical knowledge, experiments and skill to deliver the final result but simple ideas too, can go a long way if thought creatively, innovatively

and cleverly, addressing needs that may not be visible at once but may result in changes to lifestyles in a big way.

This is exactly what happened 10 years ago when another small but innovative idea developed into a highly successful lifestyle changing service which is now a multi-billion dollar enterprise named the Facebook.

Look around The need to socialize with friends and family, to know what they are doing, to share photos, videos and lots of other things with friends are all provided free of charge to millions of users every day, 24 hours uninterrupted on a global scale. But it all emerged as a small idea to a group of university students who understood that with change in lifestyles, people were finding it difficult to do social visits to friends and family and thus, there was a need that could be filled through an innovative service.

What matters is not how big the ideas is but how big it can change your society, lifestyle or the world you live in. It need not be a global innovation and it need not be something for all Sri Lankans. It can be an idea that would help your

istening is perhaps the most critical element in language and language learning, as it is the key to speaking and beyond that, reading and writing. At workplaces, listening is perceived as crucial for communication at all levels from entry level to managerial.

How well you listen has a major impact on your job effectiveness and status of relationships with others. Clearly, listening is a skill that we can all benefit by improving on. By becoming a better listener, you will improve your productivity as well as your ability to influence, persuade and negotiate. What's more, you'll avoid conflict and misunderstandings. All of these are necessary for workplace success.

Listening Vs Hearing

Don’t interrupt

Hearing refers to capturing of sounds that you hear, whereas listening requires more than that. It requires focus. Listening means paying attention not only to the story, but how it is told, use of language and voice and how the other person uses his or her body. In other words, it means being aware of both verbal and nonverbal messages. Your ability to listen effectively depends on the degree to which you perceive and understand these messages.

This sounds so obvious, yet it is amazing how often we talk over others.

It’s not only rude but it can also cripple true communication. There is perhaps no greater gift you can give to another person than by paying attention and let them know that they are being heard.

Focus on both verbal and nonverbal messages Listen to each and every word of a speaker instead of preparing for your response. Watch for body

When you don’t understand something, of course you should ask the speaker to explain it to you. But rather than interrupting, wait until the speaker pauses. Then you may ask plenty of questions

language signs that are congruent or in contrast to what is being told. Concentrate on the speaker’s tone of voice, eye contact, facial expressions and feelings to aid your understanding of a message.

Be attentive, but relaxed Mentally screen out distractions, like background activity and noise.

In addition, try not to focus on the speaker’s accent or speech mannerisms to the point where they become distractions. You don’t have to stare fixedly at the other person.

You can look away now and then and carry on like a normal person. The important thing is to be attentive.

Be curious and not defensive Sometimes we hear things we don’t agree with or are offended by and this is when it is hard to avoid becoming defensive and stop listening.

Recognize when you are triggered by such and try to stay calm so that you can continue to hear the entire message before responding. Keep an open mind to fully understand the speaker’s perspective.

Put aside judgment Fact is, we can all absorb and process words spoken by other people much

faster than they can verbalize the information. This leaves lots of time for us to analyze, evaluate and anticipate the speaker’s thoughts.

This should be avoided as the ability to truly listen and reserve judgment is crucial for all matters to be given full consideration.

Listen for ideas not just words You need to get the whole picture, not just isolated bits and pieces. Maybe one of the most difficult aspects of listening is the ability to link together pieces of information to reveal ideas of others. With proper concentration, letting go of distractions and focus this becomes easier.

Take notes if necessary Keep a notepad and pen on hand to take notes at meetings or presentations. Write down important points to help reinforce them. When you think of a question, write it down

and move on. If you keep focusing on your question in an effort to remember what you want to ask, you may miss what the speaker is saying in the meantime.

Ask questions; but wait until the speaker is ready to answer When you don’t understand something, of course you should ask the speaker to explain it to you.

But rather than interrupting, wait until the speaker pauses. Then you may ask plenty of questions. While you may be tempted to fill in the blanks yourself with your existing knowledge, asking questions is a much more effective way to improve your listening and comprehension skills. Repeating the information you just heard and combining it with a question may yield more detailed information reinforcing what you learned, making it easier to remember.

Filling out forms for raffle draws, registering on various websites, subscribing to e-mail newsletters, buying video games online, downloading android and other mobile applications and the list goes on and on.

In all these instances there’s one common thing that we do. We give out information about ourselves. The persons who collect these data about yourself will be in a position to know things such as age, contact number, where you live and even financial information relating to you.

Have you ever thought about what will be happening to the information given by you about yourself or your family to third parties? How secure will your data be? What is the guarantee that information about you will not be passed on to other parties or misused in any other way? How securely do they store your data in their systems?

You can always ask as to why someone needs your personal data and verify how secure the data will be by asking them about their policies on data security

These are the questions you should ask from yourself as well as from people who collect such data from you. Today information means money.

There are lots of people who try to steal personal information and make gains out of it. There are those who trick us into revealing information and then pass these to others at a profit.

Sure sign

If you are receiving a lot of unwanted emails relating to new products or promotions from parties you have not contacted this means your email has been misused by someone who used your trust to exploit you for commercial gains.

So how do you safeguard your personal data? The best way to protect your personal data is to be mindful on to whom you pass your information and whether it’s necessary to disclose such details. If sign up for a promotion or a news letter or a raffle draw etc requires you to disclose data that’s not relevant to the cause then you need to be careful.

Some are safe There are companies such as banks and other reputed organizations that protect the information given by way of a formal policy on data security and non disclosure. However other less known entities may not have such policies in place. You can always ask as to why someone needs your personal data and verify how secure the data will be by asking them about their policies on data security.

You also can give away personal information through social media sites. If you have kept your profile public so that anybody who visits your page has unlimited access to what’s displayed in the page your information would fall into the hands of unwanted people. There are privacy settings where you could control the amount of information you share with your friends, friends of your friends or with anyone who visits your page.

Make use of such settings to secure data, share information only with trusted parties and avoid publishing sensitive information such as your phone number and address especially on social media sites.

Cyber crime and identity theft is on the rise. Be aware and protect yourself and also educate your friends and family, too. Don’t let your information be at the fingertips of unwanted people.

When we are young our parents discipline us. As we grow up our teachers discipline us. At work, the operational environment disciplines us.

Nowadays, some parents do not discipline children partly because they themselves do not know what it is or its importance or have no time. At some schools, teachers do not discipline students when they misbehave, partly because they don't know how to do this and partly because 'authorities' do not support them. When we leave school we have to discipline ourselves as there is no one to oversee, correct or advise us.

This means taking responsibility for our own actions. It is difficult at this stage to start disciplining ourselves if we did not know what it is about from our early days.

What is 'discipline'?

Discipline means understanding and following established patterns of behaviour specific to the environment in which we live. All youngsters 'misbehave' at some time partly to find boundaries and limits of accepted and appropriate behaviour. It is known that children need the security of knowing rules and boundaries of behaviour; without which they feel at a loss. So parents and teachers need to help youngsters develop self control, a sense of limits, experience consequences of their behaviour and learn from mistakes.

Discipline is a key factor in the progress of human society and communities which include home, school, work environment, sports and social activities.

Discipline does not mean punishment or conflict.

Lack of discipline can lead to failure in life. In the work place, many people work together to achieve common objectives and deliver desired performance. Here, discipline is of paramount importance as its absence can disrupt the smooth flow of work.

This means understanding and following te 'rules' of the environment, similar to â&#x20AC;&#x2DC;rulesâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; or standards of behaviour at school. Let us compare them as follows:

addictions, procrastination and laziness.

The possession of this skill leads to self-confidence, self esteem and consequently, to happiness and satisfaction in life.

If you keep getting into trouble, think if the reason is that you are not disciplined enough. Realisation of this fact is the first step towards becoming disciplined. Look around.

Notice other people's reactions to you. Decide to make a difference.

Start with small steps. Nothing valuable can be achieved in a flash, it takes time and perseverance.

On the contrary, it means self control - a sign of inner strength which helps to govern actions and reactions, give power to stick to oneâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s decisions and help overcome

In a report published recently by the World Health Organization, Sri Lanka has been ranked number four in terms of suicide rates, in the world. Suicides among teenagers in Sri Lanka is on the high. Stress, anxiety, failures, pressures are some of the multitude of factors that contribute towards teen suicides.

Many young people who face problems or harassments at home, schools or universities can be vulnerable not only to suicide but also seek a way out through use of drugs and smoking.

Life challenges Growing up can be challenging and understanding and coping with ups and downs of life may not be easy to young people in a very competitive environment, even academically as well.

We all bear a responsibility to give a helping hand to any person we come across, who may be having suicidal thoughts or who may be vulnerable to drugs. At this moment one of our friends at school or university may be faced with a challenging situation which may lead him or her towards a wrong path in life. If you are a truly caring person you will have the qualities to identify and help such a friend in need.

Giving a helping hand at school to your friends is a good quality you can develop easily. For example, if one of your friends finds it hard to master the sums in mathematics you could help him or her to improve by helping out on doing sums. If a friend is weak in English you can encourage that person to talk in English with you privately and help build his confidence. By helping friends to their school work you will also be improving on your understanding of the subject and it will help to remember what you have learnt more clearly for a longer period.

If you notice a sudden withdrawal of a friend he may be suffering from some intense emotion and helping him by engaging and encouraging him to speak about his troubles will be useful to protect him from having suicidal thoughts or developing bad habits like smoking and taking drugs.

If you are not sure on how to approach and help him it is best to confess your fears about your friend to an adult or any other responsible person and act as a facilitator in helping your friend.

In Classes there can be students who are backward and socially not mixing with all. But once they are appreciated and helped in building their confidence, hidden talents will appear and you would see a completely different person. So if you notice any such student in school or at university be friendly with them and help them overcome any fears of social interaction. Many such students are loners who often become a target of bullying at school so your friendship will definitely help and protect them.

School and university years are the foundations on which we build our careers and those years will define who you will be in the future. By helping a colleague to overcome stressful situations you will be helping an individual who otherwise will fail to complete his education, become a burden to the society by becoming an addict or throwaway their precious life to the grievance of loved ones.

As a maturing young adult, it is your duty to put an effort, give a helping hand and do a service to the society. We all can be such caring persons by ourselves.
