In this month’s publication, we take to the world stage at Lowther Estate with the World Sheep Dog Trials, Food and Country Festival, following a string of stories and updates which first started back in January here in Eden Local. The last update is on pages 4 and 5. Since I finished the August edition in mid July, I have been out visiting more locations in Eden Valley, discovering businesses and places that I haven’t been to before. Some of these are covered this month and some I will return to. I had a few days down in Appleby, which included meeting Maurice Walton at the Appleby Creamery. This began after I bought some organic Brie from Cocklakes Farm Shop Follow us and it was fantastic, so I called Maurice and went to Appleby on facebook the next day. I also linked this with a trip to High Cup Wines World Sheep Dog Trials, Food and Country Festival 4 - 5 at Townhead Farm, Keisley, Murton, where I met with Ron and Angela Barker and yes, I had a sip and a sample and I Come On Girls 6 picked up some wine to go with that cheese. Winning numbers Penrith Lottery 7 The find of the month for me, however, was when I met R & S Plant, Monumental Locksmiths 7 Karl Phillips, the proprietor of the Sweet Briar Restaurant, Local fruit and veg now ready to order online 8 which is in the Wild Rose Park at Ormside. The menu was How many reasons do you need? 9 a discovery, but I really thought about the wine when I saw the wood pigeon on the board. The product that really House of Fairy Tales 10 inspired me was one created through inspiration, the Going Mediterranean in Temple Sowerby 10 range of Ruby’s Relishes, Chutneys and Jams made by Wave of challenge to tradition 11 Karl. 15th-18th September 2011 “Come and see some of the great trade stands, entertainment and craft taking part in the World Sheep Dog Trails, Food & Country Festival” To open this fantastic event we have a parade taking place in Penrith on Wednesday 15th September around 5pm. This is an opportunity for local people to see all the competitors from around the globe and their dogs. Come and see George Bowman leading the procession, which includes a brass band. The parade may cause a short delay to your journey home, so please stay in town and come along and watch. There are in the region of 70 trade stands including Made in Cumbria, attending the event, with a live craft village demonstrating skills from rope making, leather work, weaving and rug making to name but a few. Please come and see what’s on offer.
Here are a few examples of what’s happening on site over the four days: There will be a full programme of events in the display arena to entertain all, these will include: Duck herding, Circus skills, Lurcher racing a display from the Fell Pony Society, Sheep racing, Jive Pony, a display of Alpacas and Katie Cropper on horse back working her sheep dog. Thursday also welcomes some of our local schools, so lets hope you have a great day. The highlight of Friday is a visit from Matt Baker, Strictly Come Dancing Champion, Countryfile & The One Show Presenter. See Matt in action running a dog at the event. Come and join us each evening from Thursday 15th September for some quality food and entertainment. Everyone is welcome. Sunday see’s the crème de crème competing for the World Sheep Dog Trial Champion, so make sure you have a good seat and enjoy the great presentation. Come On Girls
It’s the article I’ve been waiting to do for some time and with us almost approaching a complete year of covering the farming year with the Hodgson family at Carleton Hall Farm, Penrith, it was time to write the story that is somewhat different to the crop articles. You get to read and see many documentaries on dairy farming. Neil’s set up is a ‘micro’ dairy I suppose. Since I’ve known Neil, which hasn’t been long, the future of the dairy set up has been debatable. Running a herd of 35 Friesians isn’t that cost effective when you add in the bills and the standards you need to maintain. The commitment means that every morning at 8 o’ clock the cows are milked. They then walk down from the shed, which is at the farm on the A686, opposite the shop and walk down the road, through the underpass to Frenchfield. The day’s grazing field sits between the River Eamont and the A66, not far from Brougham castle. I joined Neil and the all round helper, Rachel, who you generally see in the shop at weekends. Being a Sunday afternoon and the shop was now closed, Rachel was going to help with milking and the feeding of the calves. A ritual performed every day around 4- 4.15pm, is that Neil drives down to the field in his white van and rounds up the cows. ‘The girls’ complete their end of day routine EdenLocal
by walking back under the A66, up the hill towards Carleton via the road that leads to Frenchfield and runs alongside Hunter Hall School. Then just at the top of the hill before the Cross Keys, ‘the girls’ all turn left into the field at the farm. Rachel was at the top waiting for them and opened the gate. The bull’s enthusiasm was noted as he strolled over to welcome them with a 3 minute outburst of mooing! It’s a good three quarters of a mile walk before they finally form an orderly queue at the door to the shed and they can take that weight off their hooves. It’s so routine, the way they just walk in the door, look up and down for an empty slot in the line and one by one, step up to be milked. Then when they’re done, they step out and walk out of the other door. So simple, so natural, so routine and 45 minutes later it was all done! This is the nature of the business that the Hodgson family have undertaken twice a day for over 30 years. As the tradition of this everyday established routine hits head on the costs of the current day and the effects of prices being driven up by supermarket chains, small dairy farms could become a part of history. Maybe it will become a case of something that we refer to, as once there was, as opposed to there is a small dairy farm at Carleton.

We have to go back to February 2011, when I first sat down with David, his family and business partner Mark, to discuss their business and the concept of how a locally established business has over the last 20 years been delivering its fruit and veg to local catering companies, restaurants and hotels.

The regular customers would and still do go into the shop in Angel Square. They select what they need and David or one of the Starfruits team would drop shopping off whilst doing their rounds. In the April issue of Eden Local, Starfruits decided to go to the next stage, offering what it does best, delivering to your door. Behind the scenes a lot had to start changing if the business was to move forward in home deliveries and still maintain its services in delivering quality and freshness. The progress would need to be gradual.
Do try this at home! Many of you will not want to, but for some it is long overdue. Some things have to remain the same, just like the other day when I was in the Starfruits Cumbrian call centre. This is the cupboard like space to the left of the counter where David, or whoever is manning the phone, or the fax waits like a praying mantis, but with cat like reaction pounces on the phone when it rings. Anyway, there were two calls whilst I was discussing the logics of logistics with David. The first call was requiring fresh tomatoes and fresh basil for soup. I can’t remember the main but the dessert was for local Victoria plums for a crumble. Salvation for local food or was it salivation at the thought! The next call, testing that cat like reaction once again, was another regular customer with a request that started with, ‘What do you have in that’s local today’. This to me says it all. I was only just recovering from the plums. When was the last time you had this conversation with a local greengrocer? Anyway the conversation obviously moved to David reeling off a list. The answer came back, ‘Can I have some courgettes?’ David’s response was, ‘What colour green, yellow or both?’

To achieve the new directions and keep the existing customers happy, the concept agreed was to add and give the Starfruits existing customers and new customers the choice. My task was to help David review and assist him and his team with a plan. The resources were there and the capacity was there. With a fresh delivery arriving everyday Monday to Saturday, the delivery vans would still be on the road every morning. The addition since that first meeting and subsequent meetings that followed is that now there is an additional van and an additional driver. David’s wife Jane is now back in the shop and Kirsty their daughter has been coached in the art of building on her IT skills and setting up www.starfruitsonline.co.uk .

Six months on, the vans are out all day everyday, the new shop is now open. The new shop manager is Kirsty, working on a computer developing the new online shop. The Wave of change challenging tradition Last month working with Frank Jackson, we re-traced the history of his heritage as a local family butcher, which started back in 1873. I moved to Cumbria from a town where the local butcher, greengrocer, fishmonger and independent grocer were only represented by the town museum. In the Eden Valley, the landscape in Penrith has changed forever, like a strong wave coming in, we either ride it or we drown in it. We are on the eve of supermarket wars. The wave, as it builds, it sucks up momentum and energy, then it crashes on the shore. So far inland, who would have thought we are in danger of potential erosion? We can’t stop the tide of change but we can ride it. Jackson’s are one of many thinking ahead, who will be competing for the Eden Valley pound and will continue to for years to come. Tradition, quality and family are the roots of the business. They are a link in a ‘community’ chain that leads to sourcing products in the Eden Valley and Cumbria, which means that as a business, they are a part and an important link with other local businesses in that chain. Will the anchor hold? You only have to look at the chalk board on the counter in Jackson’s and you’ll recognise local names, producing local meat, supplied to Jackson’s and other butchers. It’s time to put out the stall, the sea defences. There won’t be any packaging stating that the products are Cumbrian, or that they taste traditional. These things are as they were in 1873, so Jackson’s won’t need to state what you already know. At the time of this short update and at its point of release, we’ll all be coming back from holiday and the focus for many is saving for Christmas. From the chopping board to the table We have covered almost 12 months eating our way through the signature dishes on the menu at Indiagate. My thanks to Abu for sharing the passion behind the dishes and inviting me to research the origin behind the ingredients and how the food has evolved over the centuries. Our closing dish Abu explained to me, can account for 50% of the Indian diet and is one of the healthy options associated with Indian cuisine. This ingredient is generally very healthy. Our final dish in our series of from the chopping board to the table is Tawa Michely, which reads on the menu as Pan Fried Salmon with coriander, turmeric and onions served with traditional medium strength sauce. Tawa is a flat pan and Michely means fish. Why salmon? Well Abu raised the point that eating with your fingers is common in India and boney fish is not easy to deal with, so staying with this, the best substitute is salmon. It’s close to or the nearest you’ll get to the types of large fresh fish in the rivers of India. Although salmon wasn’t the catch on the Brahmaputa, that is one of the major rivers of Asia, there are around 200 species of fish. This was the river that Abu referred to and he did name a few fish and described a gold fish with barbs, which I searched for. I then discovered fly fishing in India, which included the Golden Mahseer and then in the north, brown trout and rainbow trout! The Brahmaputra’s source is the Chemayungdung Glacier, which covers the slopes of the Himalayas about 60 miles (100 km) south east of Lake

So this is where it starts and it flows some 1,800 miles (2,900 km) from its source in the Himalayas to its confluence with the Ganges (Ganga) River, after which the mingled waters of the two rivers empty into the Bay of Bengal. Along its course, it passes through the Tibet Autonomous Region of China, the Indian states of Arunachal Pradesh and Assam, and Bangladesh. For most of its length, the river serves as an important inland waterway; it is not, however, navigable between the mountains of Tibet and the plains of India. It is an important river for irrigation and transportation. The average depth of the river is 124 feet (38 m) and the maximum depth is 380 feet (120 m). The question is can you be tempted from the norm and try the Indiagate Tawa Michely? Abu would welcome the opportunity to introduce more fish dishes. Over the year, Abu and the Indiagate team have had some great feedback about the featured dishes and would like to thank all those customers for trying the different options. A walk on the wild side
As a local person living in Penrith or the surrounding areas, would I visit the Wild Rose Caravan Park at Ormside near Appleby? Would you? Are you ever having a taste dilemma, in search of a restaurant that can give you that something different, that something special, that doesn’t come with a price tag from a different world.
To live in the Eden Valley is to enjoy the Eden Valley. I met up with Karl Phillips who is the chef and heads up the family business at Sweet Briar restaurant, which is based at the Wild Rose Caravan Park. He is a man with a passion for food, drive and enthusiasm, which when put on a plate gives you the taste of the wild side of Cumbria. Freshly selected foods, cultivated from the farms around us, it is special and a taste I’ve only found here in Eden, but here I was talking relishes, jams, pickles and chutneys made by hand, using any and every ingredient possible and sourced locally. From hedgerows and from the fields and fells situated around the restaurant, Karl’s favourites are wild mushrooms and wild garlic. I couldn’t help but notice that wood pigeon was on the specials board. Karl goes out with his young daughter, Ruby, in search of what can be sourced from the land. In their family vegetable garden, Ruby plays a big part and in the walks with her dad, she spends many exciting times in search of local produce for the restaurant, the wild way. This is a long way from the Pizzeria in Marske by the Sea, a small town on the North East coast, just south of Redcar. Originally Karl was helping out, but he then ran the restaurant for 4 years. An up and coming chef on the move, he had developed a talent, a taste and a love for Mediterranean techniques and cuisine, but his other passion was the Lakes camping and walking at every opportunity. This is where Karl’s career got serious, starting as a trainee comis chef, he worked his way around and up the ladder in the kitchens to second chef and then finally became head chef. This was all accomplished in Cumbria and he is living the dream of having his own family business in a place where he always aspired to live. I believe this is one of the best experiences you will have in Eden Valley, of wild food on a plate. Karl has been working for over 20 years, establishing his tastes, perfecting his recipes and his innovation continues, with his team and his family in their business at the restaurant. Dispelling the Myths that surround Solar PV
Over the last 4 months I have been covering various aspects and areas of solar energy with Ewen Estill the managing director of Love Solar, This month we look at solar PV and try to dispel some of the myths that surround this exceptional green growth technology and look at the potential of solar PV in taking the UK towards its commitments to source 15% of its electricity from renewable sources. In 2008, the total UK CO2 emissions were 533 million tonnes. 27% (144 million tonnes) of those emissions came from the energy we use to heat, light and power our homes. The average household creates around five and a half tonnes of CO2 a year. Just one 1Kwp of PV installed, saves approximately half a tonne of CO2 per year. MYTH: Solar is a marginal tech FACT: Solar is the fastest growing energy generation technology in the world MYTH: The UK is cloudy and wet and not suited to solar FACT: The UK has a similar solar resource to Germany, the world’s largest PV market which last year installed more than double the capacity the UK plans in total to 2020. While systems in Mediterranean countries produce more solar power, they do so less efficiently due to higher temperatures and you might be surprised to learn that ‘in the summer months performance is only marginally better as longer day lengths in more northerly latitudes compensates for the lower light intensity in the UK’. Source: PV MYTH: Solar pv is happening on a small scale FACT: More solar capacity was installed than any other renewable technology across Europe last year. Solar pv now powers around 10 million EU homes. The UK has the lowest plans for solar of all the big EU economies – and even less than Belgium! MYTH: Solar power is expensive FACT: The cost of solar has dropped faster than any other technology
over past decades with each doubling of capacity resulting in a 20% drop in technology cost. Solar has the potential to be the cheapest power generation source in the world. All commentators expect solar to reach grid parity (same price as grid electricity) in nearly all countries in most market sectors before 2020. MYTH: Solar can’t deliver much power in the UK FACT: South facing roofs and facades alone could deliver around a third of UK electricity supply. The technical potential using other roofs and ground-mounted systems goes well beyond total UK electricity demand. Note that even flat roofs receive 90% of an optimum system in the UK. MYTH: All the PV is Chinese so there’s no point FACT: The UK manufactures 4% of global solar cells, 19 companies are involved in UK solar cell manufacture and R&D, over 60 UK companies are involved in the manufacturing supply chain, over 2000 companies supply solar PV. Asian cells can be remanufactured into UK building integrated products. While new manufacturing is important, 80% of jobs are in installation.

Peaks and Pathways by Nick Wells
Easedale Tarn Easedale Beck across some meadows, then headed up towards Sour Milk Ghyll, which derives its curious name from its white, swirling waters, flowing out of the tarn and descending through a series of waterfalls, which are impressive after heavy rain.
This is one of the larger Lake District tarns, situated close to Helm Crag and lies high in a Lakeland valley about two miles from Grasmere. After parking up in Grasmere village, we walked up Easedale road for about half a mile to a footbridge over the beck, which has a sign for Easedale Tarn. We followed
Soon we arrived at the tarn, enclosed by Tarn Crag, Castle How and Blea Rigg. The Tarn fills a vast hollow which has the appearance of a crater, draining water from the surrounding hills. Water lilies decorate the surface in some areas, on what is said to be 70 feet deep in places, and contains brown trout, perch and eels. This is a very busy place in the summer, due to it’s easy access for
tourists with no equipment. Very much worth a visit, this was also a regular haunt for Wordsworth and his sister Dorothy. For the more serious walkers, there is a trail that leads from the tarn taking you to Helm Crag (one of Wainright’s favourite fells), which I will be writing about soon. We returned to Grasmere by the way we came. This walk is four miles in all, and takes about two and a half hours. I would rate this walk as easy. Your voice in the community is growing louder Setting up a community radio station is the hard part. Running a community radio station 24/7 from 25th November 2011 will be a challenge. At the time of writing this report, we have a growing team of volunteers but there is still much to do. Thanks to the Pride of Penrith Lottery as we now have the funds for the licence application and the 4 week transmission licence (RSL), should the application be accepted by Ofcom. Thanks to local businesses, we have almost secured sufficient funding to purchase the outside broadcasting vehicle. We still need more help as it’s not all about money, hands in pockets and begging bowls out.

We need materials. We need dark, heavy weight curtains to line the studios, batons of timber to fasten the curtains to and yes we need a lot of equipment. In the short-term, we’ll be aiming to cover the basics of what we need. If you are business in the Eden Valley, please consider joining CA Business. For the first year it’s just £100 to subscribe and Eden FM will get £25 of this subscription and it all goes towards the funding of the equipment. If 200 local businesses sign up, it will make a big difference to the equipment budget, but as a business it will make a big difference to you. Full details about CA business are on page 30.
What can a local community radio station do for local business? The radio cannot run without financial support from businesses, but Eden FM can deliver affordable advertising to local businesses . CA Business is just one revenue stream and businesses in CA Business will be promoted on the radio as part of the CA package. Eden FM is a limited ‘not for profit’ organisation. If it is successful in achieving full-time community broadcasting status, its advertising revenue will be capped. Only 50% of its revenue can be through on air advertising. Part of the financial planning for Eden FM is to set up a variety of revenue streams. In the immediate future, these will be used to purchase equipment as well as pay for licencing. In the long-term these revenue streams will be the base line for its continual revenue. Here are some costs, which we hope local businesses may be tempted by. In the space of 28 days, we have 672 radio hours and we are selling a concept called ‘Dedicated hours’. To buy a dedicated hour is subject to the time of the day and programming. It will cost £10.00 to £15.00 per hour. That hour is your hour. It’s community radio, it’s your voice in your community. As a business you can buy one hour. You can come onto the radio and tell us about your business, where it is, what it does, why you did it, when did it start and let the community know more about your business. Is it a birthday celebration or an anniversary or has it been a special year? Scheduled at the right time, in the right programme , it’s your dedicated hour, a EdenLocal

special hour, which could be a special present, the music from that year or some clips of news, a trip back in time. You help produce your dedicated programme. There are some standard advertising packages. All of these are on www.edenfm.co.uk. We won’t be playing advert after advert, after advert, after advert. We will be playing six 20 – 30 second ads each hour at 20 minutes past the hour and 20 minutes to the hour. From 25th November to 22nd December the rates are higher for our 28 days transmission, but we will also be streamed on the internet from the 25th November, so if you have a computer, at the click of a mouse you’ll get Eden FM. The first advertising packages we have are for 4 months. We have around 4032 ad slots per 28 days. We need 28 businesses to purchase 4 months of radio advertising for £280. These do not have to be 4 months in a row, but every business signing up, will feature in the first transmission, then the continued transmission on the internet through 2012. Your ad played 5 times per day, is less than 50p per play. Eden FM your voice in the community will be on a radio or on a PC near you soon.

Bringing the world into Penrith classrooms Cumbrian youngsters thoroughly enjoy growing up in Eden and Penrith, but also quite like to learn more about cultures in other parts of the world. Queen Elizabeth Grammar School, along with a number of other schools in Eden, is recognised as an “International School” for its work in celebration of the diversity of cultures around the globe. Thus QEGS students have recently visited Taiwan on the Cumbria-wide British Council-led “Connecting classrooms” scheme which allowed two student delegates and one teacher to attend a Citizenship conference, leading to cooperative work in Hualien province in Taiwan. Others enjoy cultural variety closer to home, for example at the school’s annual Dance Evening, when each year group works on a specific theme, exploring the culture behind a dance and then learning and adapting the appropriate dance steps. For years 8 and 9, these are the national dances of countries from all over the world like France, Portugal and Bavaria, whilst the whole of year 10 this year concentrated on “Mayim, Mayim”, a dance from Israel. QEGS’ link with its Ugandan partner school is gathering
further strength since a recent teacher exchange. The Uganda club, run by year 13 students, acts as a steering group and works on whole-school activities throughout the year. The club plans and develops one activity at a time, for example a “tea dance” used as an opportunity to inform parents about the link, or a hilarious “Teachers got Talent” event to raise funds for Bupadhengo School. A year ago, the school was able to send an entire shipping container full of educational goods to Bupadhengo. It took from to July until December to get there, with many stops at customs and with huge amounts of bureaucracy, but it arrived between Christmas and New Year, almost completely intact. It has already made a massive difference to QEGS’ partner school. Year 9 Geography students explore issues around the differences between developed and ELD countries. They focus on Japan and, again, on Uganda, studying the history and culture of both countries, with particular emphasis on QEGS’ partner school and its students as examples of ordinary Ugandans. QEGS pupils study both French and German in Key Stage 3, and thus all of year 7 are invited to

Penrith Girls Triumph

Penrith Cricket Club’s under 13 girls team were triumphant in the first round of the Lady Taverners under 13 Girls Club Competition. The competition is organised on a county basis with each county winner progressing to a regional final, the winner’s of which go through to a national final.
however was a warm up friendly against Threlkeld which they won comfortably as they did their two pool games. The Threlkeld girls recovered well from their opening loss and also won both their pool games to reach the final.
The Cumbria round was held on Sunday at Threlkeld cricket club with teams entered from Caldbeck, Carlisle, Keswick/Braithwaite, Netherfield, Penrith and Threlkeld. The teams were divided into two pools of three with the winners of each pool meeting in the final.
In the final Penrith batted first and as in their previous games their batting proved decisive as they topped 100 for the third time in the four games they played. Threlkeld’s reply was an improvement on the total they made in the first game between the sides but accurate bowling and excellent fielding from the Penrith girls ensured the win. The Penrith team who were represented by Polly Bell, Charlotte Cousin, Karin Dixon, Holly Hardy, Zoe Hullock, Poppy Scholefield, Ella Telford and Libby Telford now go on to the regional finals where they will meet teams from Cheshire, Durham, Lancashire, Northumberland and Yorkshire.
The competition format is an eight a side game played over ten overs using a “semi hard” inter cricket ball and gives girls who have little or no cricketing experience a chance to play competitively without the need to wear pads and helmets. Penrith were drawn in the same pool as Carlisle and a joint Keswick/Braithwaite team. Their first game

participate in an annual trip to the Black Forest in Germany. There are also exchange visits to a German and a French partner school for GCSE students. Many educational study trips abroad bridge the gap between learning in the classroom and studying places and events at first hand. Every year the school hosts an “International Afternoon” which allows all students to participate
in workshops ranging from playing handball and lacrosse, learning international circle dances and Bollywood dance moves, painting landscape motifs in Chinese style, hearing many presentations on a variety of countries, exploring Japanese animation, making Italian food, and creating South American worry dolls. Penrith classrooms are clearly open to the world.
