Dear Residents and Businesses Once again welcome to your Eden Local magazine. This October issue marks our second anniversary and hence the 24th edition of Eden Local since our launch in November 2010. Originally set to offer a new choice to local businesses giving them an affordable vehicle to advertise and communicate themselves to the local community. We have also created a communication tool for local people to share their successes to the local community. Distribution was initially 5,000 copies per month back in 2010. It has risen steadily to 22,400 by October 2012 and there are many people to thank for this progress; there will be more to come about this in issue 25. Meanwhile, I have an enormous thank you for the many kind words received via telephone and by email following our expansion into the Shap area last month. Prior to the publication being released I had a great afternoon with the family and dog exploring the Abbey and Keld Chapel, following the route of Keith’s Walk on a sunny Sunday, to discover some of the many jewels to be found in this lovely part of Eden. It’s been a very busy September travelling and meeting people throughout Eden and additionally spending a few days in Keswick and Cockermouth working on the expansion of our sister magazine of Lakes Local. Carlisle has also been on the travel schedule as we look forward to launching Border City Times on 22nd October which will bring the total distribution of Cumbria Local publications up over 58,000 copies per month. Our dedicated, small local team are now able to offer the full range of skills from market campaign planning through to design and print to support the marketing campaigns for local business as well as offering a platform for local groups, societies, clubs and charities to communicate to a huge audience; read more about this on page 27. Writing about local businesses means more than just delivering an advert; my thanks to Martin Cowin for covering the Brough Foodival on Page 4. This month I also got to talk to the new proprietors of The Birds Bistro (page 6) and as I walk through the Devonshire Arcade most days I’ve been finding out a bit more about the people who work there-more details on page 8. A fantastic day was shared by many to help celebrate 160 years at John Richardson and Son, the full story is on pages 10 & 11. I also had the opportunity to find out more about Penrith Outdoor Pursuits (see page 25). In between this Eden Fm Radio continues to broadcast over the web and here at Cumbrian Publications Ltd we are preparing for a move to new premises in the heart of Penrith, to a building which historically has been all about advertising. And finally my congratulations to David Jessop who has just been awarded the Buy With Confidence Scheme issued by Cumbria County Council, who called me not just about an award but the positive response from a simple coloured boxed

ad, which he claimed was the most effective and rewarding advert he had ever placed. Thank you David. I’ll be back next month with your November Eden local, please drop me a line with ideas, or any questions you may have to lee@cumbrianlocal.co.uk

A large variety of local foods, producers, entertainers and families from Eden and beyond congregated in the field at Alderside Garth, Brough, on the morning of Sunday 26th August 2012 for the very first Eden Foodival. The Eden Foodival was hosted by Swanson House Restaurant and Guest House, the proprietors of which are Philip and Patricia Jones. Their daughter Emma was in London in the summer of 2011 and saw an event staged in one of the parks, which hosted food, drink and entertainment. The idea of the Eden Foodival was born. The word ‘Foodival’ was created by the Jones family themselves. Sunday 26th August was chosen as the date of the Foodival, so the event could showcase the best of the Eden Valley on the Bank Holiday weekend. An untried event here in Eden, it came together with help from Eden District Council, Brough Parish Council and Nurture Eden, to promote responsible tourism and a family orientated event. To start proceedings on the day, the Foodival was declared open by Cameron of the 1st Appleby Scouts, who cut the ceremonial ribbon. A parade of ‘popup’ restaurants were serving their signature dishes, including Swanson House and Lune Valley Smokehouse. Gemma and Martin of Westmorland Hotel told us much of the produce, ingredients and meats they use in their dishes come from their own farm at Orton, or the farm shop at Tebay Services. Sharrow Bay protégé James Cowin of Mrs Miller’s Culgaith told us about the menus he has prepared for autumn and winter. Wendy of Augill Castle told us about the experience of having afternoon tea in an old English castle! Love Food North Pennine Dales provided cookery demonstrations, including a demonstration by Fiona Lambert, the Leading Hotels of Cumbria Young Chef 2012. A former horsebox, converted into a mobile pizza oven, was supplied on the day by Serious Dough. Josie of Serious Dough told us about her visits to Italy for inspiration of making the perfect pizza. EdenLocal

Mums Who Bake presented The Cake Workshop – Design your own personalised finish for a cake! A well stocked Farmers Market promoted products from Loopy Lisa’s Fudge, Peaches & Cream and Winter Tarn Organic Farm. Cumberland Honey Mustard made their range of mustards available for tasting, including their seriously hot Vulcan mustard! High Cup Wines of Appleby had their wines available for tasting. Meat products were available from Deer ‘n’ Dexter; Phil of Bowland Pork Sausage, when asked what herbs and spices are used in his sausages said “That’s a secret. I could tell you, but I’d have to kill you!” David Knipe of Heartwood Free Range Poultry spoke passionately about the attempts of small, rural farms to get their products into the supermarket chains. Andrej of North Wall Charcuterie had a nice selection of cured meats. Brough Castle Catering brought not only their own brand of ice creams, but also a hog roast. Nine Standards Brewery and the Lakes Distillery provided the beverages. Eden Rivers Trust brought their converted ex-military vehicle, in which they were showing a short film about the River Eden. The 1st Appleby Scouts had a demonstration of campfire cooking. Entertainment on the day included face painting, a Teddy Bear’s picnic, a circus act and musicians, including Kirkby Stephen Grammar School’s Big Jam Band. Llama Karma Kafe brought some of the smaller animals in their care, including a snake and a tarantula! Transport was provided by Cumbria Classic Coaches, running one of their vintage buses. All those involved with the Foodival also contributed to the Eden Foodival Cookbook, supporting the Great North Air Ambulance. The Cookbook is available from the Foodival website (edenfoodival.co.uk) The Eden Foodival has provided a legacy of emphasising rural events, minimising food miles and encouraging local recycling. Up to 800 people on the day was an excellent start for what is hoped to become an annual event.

In the Mix at the Birds Bistro By Lee Quinn

Earlier this month, I met with the new owners of the Birds’ Bistro at Penruddock. I had already discovered that whilst many do know of this Eden based business, which has been established for 15 years; some did not and thought that it might be a new restaurant! What is certain is that as Cumbria’s Wild Bird and Red Squirrel feeding specialists, the Birds’ Bistro has the most tables across Cumbria to serve! Paul, our Eden Local Photographer and I met with Jonathan and Jackie Ashton-Taylor, who have recently taken over the business from Richard and Annelise Dyke who retired in August. Over a coffee I learned a lot about feeding the wild birds and about the preservation of red squirrels. We also talked about the conservation of bats, bees, butterflies, bugs, hedgehogs and ladybirds! The Birds’ Bistro sources its ingredients from all around the world and combines them on the premises to create carefully balanced blends. These mixes are designed to provide the widest choice of gourmet feed to attract and satisfy the variety of birds visiting our gardens. The mixes also cater for the different ways birds may prefer to feed, including tubes, tables and ground feeders. Getting the right mix is important. It’s about providing the right diet designed for the species of bird you want to attract. For example, the majority of small bird species

visiting our gardens don’t eat wheat as they cannot crack the husk, but it often appears in poor quality mixes because it is a cheap ingredient! The birds cannot tell you they don’t like it, but they leave the evidence discarded on the floor. At the Bistro, you will find wheat in only one out of 10 specialist bird food mixes on the menu (specifically for pheasants and doves). There are also a huge range of fat and suet products available and not forgetting the dried and live mealworms, yummy!

A visit to the Birds’ Bistro can only make your garden a better place for wildlife to dine. We will be hearing more from the Birds Bistro as we prepare for and are advised on helping wildlife through the seasons. The Birds Bistro will be working in partnership with the Penrith Co-op Society card Penrith Co-op Society membership scheme. Watch this space for Penrith Co-op card accepted future details MEMBERS PRIVILEGE CARD NUMBER 19014000

Visiting the Birds’ Bistro was an education in the variety of requirements of our wild birds and the conservation support provided for our red squirrels. What was clear from my visit is our native wild birds need our help and if we take a little trouble to get the right seed mix, you will enjoy the benefits as well as your birds. At the Birds’ Bistro shop, you will discover that as well as the mixes for birds and red squirrels, in sizes from 1kg to 25kg, there is also a huge range of products including the largest variety of bird feeders in the North West. Also a nesting box for just about every bird,

Devonshire Arcade by Lee Quinn

In a previous edition I have mentioned my regular morning stroll through the Devonshire Arcade. Most mornings on my walk to work, I cut through the arcade just as it is coming to life. The fresh foods, which include the butcher, the baker and the fishmonger are well awake before sunrise and the greengrocer is already half way through his day by time I pass through- I must remember to pop in for a Pumpkin soon. As we start to think about preparing for Christmas here is a little more about this group of local traders which are all located under the one roof. This month we’ll take a look at the shops situated on the left hand side of the arcade as you walk in from the main entrance on Devonshire Street. As we walk through first on the left, Andrew and Liane Dixon are just about to reach their first year in the Arcade at Twinkle Toes. They offer a range of children’s clothing and accessories from newborn to 13 years from everyday wear to outfits fit to grace any special occasion. They have just recently taken on board new brands which include Emile Et Rose, Joules and Sarah Louise. With clear aims to provide a friendly service selling top quality products at affordable prices, it’s congratulations to them on their first year. Pop in or have a look online at www.twinkletoesofpenrith.com Just along in unit 6 we have our very own the unique Gentleman’s Shaving Shop and Accessories. The proprietor Jumali Sen, has an established shaving and clothing shop, offering a great range of high quality, ‘Made in England’, shaving products, such as Geo .F.

Trumper, Taylor of Old Bond Street shaving cream, shaving brushes, aftershave and much more... The Barber’s art is thought to date back thousands of years with relics resembling razors having been found to date to as early as 3500 BC. Whilst shaving is an ancient art it can be an art that many men simply fail to master. Pop in to the shop to learn what are the steps involved in a good shave. Or visit the website www.cumbriashavingshop.co.uk, they have exclusive gifts to suit every mans wishes all year round. At the Sandgate end of the Devonshire Arcade, we have a food haven. One of the newest businesses moving into the arcade, established over the last 5 months is the Lemon Tree. I sat down and had a coffee with Henry Lynch and Helen, his wife, joint owners of this exciting new venture. The original cafe site has been re decorated throughout, creating a relaxing atmosphere for all, with a new menu and they are now licensed. Open normally from 8.30am to 5.00pm Monday to Saturday, later opening hours will be available for pre-booked parties by calling them on 01768 864110. Keen to use as many local products as possible for his new menu, Henry supports many of the businesses on his doorstep, including Little’s Family Butchers in the arcade and many others from around Eden. They are also proud to serve Geltsdale beer, brewed by Fiona Deal in Brampton. This excellent local brew is currently only available in Penrith from The Lemon Tree. Their new website will soon be available to visit at www.lemontreepenrith.co.uk So for this month here are three good reasons to visit The Devonshire Arcade, but there are many more which we will focus on when we return to the Devonshire Arcade next month, as we continue our build up Christmas.

Ring that Bell for 160 Years It has to be said, I do enjoy meeting people through my work at Eden Local. As a small local team of four, it is important that we are able to dedicate quality time to help and contribute to projects that are not just about advertising. This is just one of those stories and those moments, which isn’t about advertising but is an appreciation and a celebration. It was in November 2010 when I was first invited to discuss potential projects with John Richardson and Son and it was later, in March 2012, when I sat around the table with members of the team and was given the honour of working on the events to celebrate the 160th Anniversary of John Richardson and Son. After months of meetings, and many hours going through the history and the archive documents about this family business, a new marketing plan began to emerge. The history of the company written as “It Began in 1852” was published over three parts in the Eden Local from June to August. Whilst this was happening EdenLocal

behind the scenes focus was on the planning of the anniversary celebration, which in simple terms became a fantastic great “party in the yard”. My special thanks to Tracy Dudson and Matt Beevis, who should they choose to give up their day jobs of selling Kitchens and other home improvement products could well start out on a new career as party planners! You may remember from the history of Roper Street, that there was a bell that was rung at the start of the day which you could set you clock by it as it was heard across Penrith. Well, it was time to ring that bell again, this time to begin a day to celebrate and remember. It was a gathering of local people, new and existing customers, friends and families of past and present employees who came together on Saturday 1st September to celebrate a special day. The pictures, our thanks to Paul Whitterick of Whittwoo Photography, tell the story of this fantastic weekend. From the Friday Trade Day and Saturday Open Day suppliers and many local businesses helped raise the sum of £579.28 for John Richardson and Son nominated charity “Hospice at Home Carlisle and North Lakes”. Our thanks go to all those involved in this project and those that made it a very special day. by Lee Quinn

Phantom figures and Spectral sums (and how to avoid “going bust )

October 31 brings Halloween, a harmless (usually) fun evening for children to disguise themselves as ghosts, ghouls and such like and go knocking on residents doors asking “Trick or treat?, a modern version of an ancient Christian ritual - or so it is said. In the absence of a treat of course, the “trick holds the possibility of someone performing mischief – but in business there are opportunities for all sorts of mischief making all year round. Let’s take the absence of effective financial controls. It’s pretty easy to manipulate stock or create assets that don’t physically exist, make payments to a false supplier, or modify records to hide creditors. No witch or wizard is required, phantom records and ghostly transactions can be conjured up at the drop of anyone’s hat; so you see - there are spirits in the material world after all. We recently uncovered a similar situation to one of those described above, that would have been prevented if appropriate controls had been in place; we advised using such simple methods as separating staff duties and a regular cross checking of data, just two very effective solutions that can be applied easily and quickly to most businesses.

Full Circle can advise on and help implement simple business systems that will help detect and prevent fraud and error creeping into your accounts. There’s no need for any parapsychologists and we don’t need any special equipment. Your business will benefit from our advice –so “who you gonna call? Full Circle Accountancy on 01768 580058.

Renewables The summer is over and with winter fast approaching, we are all starting to think of preparations for the winter; getting the oil tank filled up; restocking the log pile, filling the coal bunker and maybe shopping around for a cheaper electricity provider. It’s an expensive business keeping our properties warm and cosy over the long Cumbrian winters and as the price of electricity, gas, oil and even wood and coal continues to rise year on year our bills look set to keep on rising for the foreseeable future. What are the alternative heat and electricity generation technologies out there to help reduce our bills in the future? 1) Solar PV (Solar Electric) is still one of the best investments that you can make. Solar PV saves on your electricity bills and generates a financial income guaranteed for the next 20 years; earning and saving up to £1000 per year. 4 KWp domestic system; Approx. cost; £7000 2) Solar Thermal (Solar Hot Water ) - depending on your hot water usage and lifestyle a solar thermal (hot water system) can provide between 60-80% of your total hot water demand; Approx. cost; £5000 3) Air Source Heat pumps; Air source heat pumps absorb heat from the outside air. This heat can then be used to heat radiators, under floor heating systems, or warm air convectors and hot water in your home. An air source heat pump extracts heat from the outside air in the same way that a fridge extracts heat from its inside. A well installed heat pump will give out 4 units of heat for every 1 unit of electricity put in. When replacing electric heating a saving of saving up to £800 per annum can be made; Approx. cost; £6000-£10000 4) Biomass & Wood Pellet Stoves; Wood-fuelled heating systems, also called biomass systems, burn wood pellets, chips or logs to provide warmth in a single room or to power central heating and hot water boilers. A stove burns logs or pellets to heat a single room - and may be fitted with a back boiler to provide water heating as well. A boiler burns logs, pellets or chips, and is connected to a central heating and hot water system. A wood-fuelled boiler could save you nearly £600 a year compared to electric heating. Biomass boilers for domestic application should be eligible for the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) in 2013; Approx. Cost £10,000- £15000 Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) The Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) is a UK Government scheme set up to encourage uptake of renewable heat technologies among householders, communities and businesses through the provision of financial incentives. Only commercial systems at present they qualify for the RHI. Domestic systems are due to be awarded the RHI in 2013. Rates are still to be set.

Leanne’s Tips Does my horse need a rug on this time of year? “If the weather is ‘wintery; but not wet and windy then no, your horse’s digestive system should generate enough heat, providing your feeding the correct feed”.

Gallop Equestrian Rugs. New in for the winter are these super value winter turnout rugs, with or without necks. From only £29.99

What feed should I be feeding this time of year? “This time of year, especially the end of October can see us have light frost. During the frost if there’s no grass available for your horse, be sure to feed good quality Haylage. Also to keep your horse in good condition a basic coarse mix and an chaff can keep the weight on, especially thoroughbreds or older horse as they tend to lose weight easily.

Grooming Your Horse. Horses which get groomed more often than others tend to have healthier and more attractive coats. Your horse should always be groomed before being ridden to avoid chafing and rubbing of dirt, which can course sores on your horse. Grooming is also an ideal opportunity to check your horse for any injures etc.

Winter Stable Boredom. Likit Boredom breaker. Designed to be hung is a safe area of the stable. Add large Likits to the holder and little Likits to the ball to keep the horse interested he searches for a reward

During winter, your horse may spend a lot of time in its stable. During this time he can become very bored. Its essential that your hoarse has a big enough stable so they can turn around and there is no hanging objects. A great way to stop boredom is have some sort of toy/treat for your horse to play with, ideally a lick of some sort.

Walking with Keith Wood

Grisedale from Patterdale

A delightful walk to explore one of the side valleys heading up from Patterdale, following the route of the Coast to Coast in parts and an ancient packhorse route between Patterdale and Grasmere 1. Park either at the George Starkey Hut or the main Car Park opposite the Patterdale Hotel. From here walk back along the road towards St. Patrick’s Church. Pass the church on the left and continue along the road with the Old Police House and Patterdale Mountain Rescue Headquarters on the right hand side. 2. Where the road passes over a beck take the side road up to the left, now keeping the beck to your right hand side. The road swings around to the right signposted ‘Helvellyn and Grisedale Tarn’. This narrow surfaced lane rises quite steeply, with Grisedale Beck flowing swiftly in the deep wooden ravine before opening out into Grisedale itself. 3. Very soon a T-junction is reached, to the right is the path to Helvellyn and the return route, but continue straight on the main track up the valley, through a gate signed Private Land – No Parking. A little further on where the track swings to the right leading to a farm, continue on the track up the valley with the wall on the left. At a small farmstead, now holiday cottages, with a range of outbuildings, pass through a five bar gate and continue along the level heading up the valley. Pass through a series of gates. St. Sunday Crag now towers to the left, to the right can be seen Dollywagon Pike, Nethermost Pike and Striding Edge up to the right. This path along the valley is following the Coast to Coast route which goes from St.Bees in the West to Robin Hood’s Bay in the East. 4. At the point where Nethermost Beck comes crashing down the fellside on the opposite side of the valley EdenLocal

are the remains of mine workings and below, crossing Grisedale Beck a wooden bridge. Leave the main track which now continues up to Grisedale Tarn and aim for this bridge through what can be wet and boggy ground. Once over the bridge pass through the gate in the wall follow the track up the fellside towards Eagle Crag, this is a wide well laid out track which once served the mines, whose spoil heaps can be seen directly ahead on the face of Eagle Crag. At the remains of a building turn right onto a cobbled path which marks the start of our return leg along Grisedale back towards Patterdale. Cross over Nethermost Beck on a wooden footbridge; Place Fell now in the foreground. This is now steady, easy walking undulating through glacial remains. 5. The path passes behind the farm seen on the outbound route, parallel to the intake wall, rising slightly up the fellside and then passing through an ancient cast iron posted gate. 6. When the path joins the route coming down from Striding Edge, take a right turn through a gate in the wall and head down the track which then meets the road leading to the kennels of the Ullswater Hounds. Pass through a kissing gate and onto the tarmaced road. Heading to the right, continue on that road until it meets the main route. Turning left, retrace the route back along the steep lane down towards Patterdale, turning right and the main road for the short walk back the car.

For full details of the route with map and photographs are in “ Boot up Ullswater”, which can be found in many local outlets including Penrith Outdoors, internet shops or directly from the author at: www.keithwoodphotography.co.uk

Fleece Lined Crocs

£34.99

As I periodically do, I step into Penrith Outdoor Pursuits with the changing seasons. As a local magazine we have been working with Janis and her team for almost two years.

With a sales area set on two floors Penrith Outdoor Pursuits, was established in 1992. The shop was officially opened by Mike Harding from BBC Radio 2. Today the company is still owned and run by three of its original founders. It is a family run business; Shaun and Jim who work in the store are both fell runners whilst Amanda and Ali are regular fell walkers.

As a business the team prides itself on delivering a great service in a friendly manner supported with a depth of local knowledge. As an independent retailer they sell what they believe is good value, functional, practical, good looking and long lasting outdoor clothing and equipment. As they very clearly told me; ‘they don’t do cheap tat!!!’ Being established and occupying a prominent corner site in Penrith located at 37 Middlegate on the corner of Queen Street, they have built an established following of local customers and visitors who return season after season, year after year, which also includes C2C cyclists and C2C walkers Whilst for the last 20 years Penrith Outdoor Pursuits have maintained a large stock, in the shop and online, of traditional and innovative outdoor clothing and equipment

the last few years has also seen the introduction of more lifestyle brands and more Country / Leisure wear, including in the last two years North Face, Joules, Weird Fish, Lazy Jacks, Craghoppers and Crocs. New for this winter they also have Jack Wolfskin, Animal, Jack Murphy and Target Dry. With their second store at Alston, which is more of a clearance and end of line outlet, the third option to purchase is via their new online site at www.cumbriaoutdooronline.co.uk Pop in, try it on, try it out; your local independent outdoor and lifestyle clothing shop. by Lee Quinn

The best distribution for the best price, with some tips and advice The best distribution for the best price, with some tips & advice Building on from last month’s details about the distribution figures for Cumbria Local publications: Cumbrian Local publications are not just delivered to every home by Royal Mail in CA1 1, CA1 2, CA2 5, CA2 7, CA3 8, CA3 9, CA4 0, CA 4 9, all of CA10, CA11, CA12, CA13 and CA16 but also to every business address, which of course, includes all those people working from home, including those people with a mobile business. As a business do you currently advertise in print? Do you know on a regular basis what the actual distribution is of the publication you have chosen to advertise in? Are the distribution figures for the publication you are advertising in based on sales? Always ask for the last three months actual sales figures, not the average! If the publications is distributed via collection points ask how many and how the actual distribution can be monitored or quantified. Cumbrian Local publications are free to the residents and businesses of Cumbria and free to read online outside Cumbria across the world. As each new letter box opens in the postcodes we cover, a copy of Lakes Local, Eden Local or Border City Times will be delivered. This will include holiday homes as well as full-time occupied properties. New people moving to the area may not buy or collect a local publication but they

will get a Cumbrian Local Publication through their door within a month of moving in. With our best intentions we support all that is local, however, we make it known that we do shop around the UK for the best printing prices for our own publications and the Cumbrian Local Publications customers, which is why you can advertise your business to 57,793 addresses (figures generated 15th September for Royal Mail Customer Finder) for a minimum of just £49.50 per month (As little as £10 per month in Lakes Local) The distribution includes 4,238 business addresses, so it is an ideal platform for business to business communication.

And Finally...... During September I received a few emails and have been stopped in the street by people asking the question; “Why is a local Cumbrian magazine being printed in Bedford?” The simple answer is that the savings made are significant and have allowed us to recruit our first apprentice and to introduce low cost design and illustration work to businesses and organisations across the Eden Valley and Cumbria. Furthermore this one instance of going away from our principles of shopping locally, which we first explored in May of 2012, has also given Cumbrian Local Publications Ltd, formerly Eden Local Ltd, the finance and ability to continue to expand, employ more local people and give local businesses the opportunity to get their message through some 57,793 doors per month, which includes 4,238 businesses for just £49.50 per month. In the week that the Eden Local, Lakes Local and Border City publications are distributed is any other local publication achieving this? As we prepare for the end of British Summer time once more the weekend of the 27th October, with many of the Halloween festivals sharing this same weekend, our booking deadline for the Eden Local November 2012 publication is 12pm Tuesday 9th October.
