3 Welcome to your September Eden Local I started last month by saying it’s raining outside and considering the fantastic weather we have had I can’t believe I’m once again writing this opening. And it’s raining again! It’s been another manic month, much of this for good reasons though. Away from work on this magazine and Eden FM I have had to drive 1000’s miles and I am so looking to having a quiet few months ahead and some quality time to catch up and plan. Where has 2022 gone? Meanwhile, whilst waiting for some last minute changes to come over for this addition to complete this 185th edition of the Eden Local, I’m thinking we have just three more months of Eden Locals until Christmas. Looking back I’m thinking where did August go? Talking to people generally and a lot customers specifically, there seems to be a feeling out there that 2022 wasn’t the year people thought it was going be. As if some expected a lot more... I said to one person go one year back, then two years and then think again. My thoughts however repeatedly on this is I do agree that we have possibly wished for more. Sometimes it’s too easy to get caught up on those things that pull you back or distract you and we lose that precious time and ability to look ahead. On a positive when I start looking forward in my diary beyond 2022 I’m seeing lot more local events returning. On reflection of this month in my work on the magazine and based on my notes it’s been non-stop, calls, emails, I A Snapshot of what we’re got We have a number of new and returning businesses/organisations to the Eden Local this month, plus our existing we’ve also hit almost 40 organisations across our 32 pages. So what have we got, well following on from so much interest in the Eden FM Guinness World attempt at Appleby it’s taken more than just a page to explain the process (p 6, 8 and 10.) 4 met possibly 100 more people than last month. Phone calls coming in have doubled! It’s been an all-round busy month but we must all make time for some moments of rest. When you work for yourself, sometimes you struggle to have those moments. So probably my shortest welcome to an Eden Local but I have left sufficient space for Rex Di UntilNoci. till next month, I’ll leave you with one Howquestion…manytimes does the word Penrith feature in this issue of your Eden Local? Rightmove’s most recent price index reports that the North West saw an 0.8% rise in house prices and an annual year on year rise of 11.2%, and that the number of available homes for sale is still 40% down on where it was in 2019. Here Kate Patrick, Head of Estate Agency for H&H Land & Estates, discusses the supply and demand situation and the property market for the Penrith and Eden Valley area. “We continue to experience extremely high levels of demand for property, and currently there are no signs of this abating. Prices year on year have risen in the region of 10 to 15%, with demand from both locals and people from outside of the area. Most properties we are bringing to the market I would describe as lifestyle properties, and since the outbreak of Covid these are more highly sought after. Many people’s priorities changed during the pandemic, and those purchasing are wanting to change their lifestyles, either by moving to the countryside for a slower pace or making family a priority and choosing to move in with or to be near them.

Demand for property in Penrith & the Eden Valley remains high despite economic and political uncertainty

There are many reasons for deciding to sell a property. The main reasons we are hearing from our clients are that they want to downsize, to relocate closer to town, depending on their needs and lifestyle, or they want to move closer to Currentlyfamily. here in the Penrith area, we are experiencing some considerable buoyancy as many, particularly older homeowners, are looking to downsize or move before winter comes. They are looking to move to houses and areas with increased accessibility for them as they become either unable to drive or need to be closer to amenities. So, with buyer demands still up 26% on June 2019 levels if you are considering selling, now is a good time to bring your property forward and capitalise on the current market.” Our team are here to offer advice to anyone looking to buy, sell, or let a property in the area. Where were you on 18th August 2022 when this article was published? What about if we go back even further from this date to 32 months ago, 992 days ago, which was 85,683,460 seconds ago? Well, that was Saturday 30th November 2019 and the day of the Penrith Christmas light switch on. Team Eden FM didn’t know then that it was going to be the last time they would be out in the community away from the studio, broadcasting live in the centre of Penrith. Since that day, as a team of volunteers, much has changed in how it works, its dynamics as a team and its direction for the future as an organisation. This could probably relate to a lot of local voluntary organisations who were there on that day. Clearly what we are doing now is quite different from our days of being studio based presenters in our premises in Penrith, which as a mobile team, we attended regular events with our outside broadcasting vehicle throughout the year, which sadly we could not afford to keep. Moving forward as Eden FM sets out its six year plan, this includes its application for a third, five year community radio licence. It also includes the long awaited increase to the area of its transmission, taking the FM reach to Appleby and Kirby Stephen whilst also improving the transmission in Penrith.

Importantly, after not being seen in the community for over 2 ½ years, a couple of members of the team returned to Frenchfield Stadium, now the newly renamed Leo Group Stadium. As they did in 2017, it was the traditional first Penrith AFC home match fixture of the 2022-2023 season. Behind the scenes a live broadcast for a 3pm kick off, its two volunteers loading up the equipment at 10am and getting home at 6pm to broadcast for two hours. This event was also a test for the new Eden FM outside broadcasting unit, in preparation for its Appleby Show debut.

In the immediate future, should Eden FM get the funding, the mobile studio would double up as a backup studio 2 and portable studio on wheels. At present, both studio one and two are in Penrith but studio 2 could be in any location in Eden. Since 2016 Eden FM has also developed pop up studios. This generally consists of a laptop,

It currently has seven presenters who can, with a simple setup, broadcast from home, which the station switched on during lockdown. It’s a studio that all fits into a standard flight case. In 2017 Eden FM did a live football match commentary in Sunderland on a Penrith AFC away match, with this equipment relaying a signal via a mobile phone that was then broadcasted live here in Penrith. It was also used to do eight live broadcasts from Carlisle in 2017/18. The test went well at the stadium. Unfortunately for the home team, it was a 1 – 2 result on the day. 11th August 2022 was a much bigger test into an area where wifi was scarce and power was via a generator. For some of the Eden FM team, it was setting off at 6.30am for the Appleby Show. The team of volunteers that day included radio members and friends of Eden FM, which made a team of 15, they came from areas across Cumbria. It was going to be a bit different from the last time Eden FM went to the Appleby Show with the flight case and the pop up box. The task in the making was about 500 voluntary hours. Just the hours on the day would be in excess of 150. The preparation in the two weeks leading up to the event had been over 200 hours, and on the day and after that day, a total of 150 hours. In the August issue of the Eden Local, Eden FM announced Continued on page 10

it was attempting its first Official Guinness World Record (GWR) previously scheduled for the Skelton Show. Now with alterations and reprints of all documentation and new signage its banners and posters, its plan as announced in the Eden Local was to beat the existing record of ‘The most radio DJs presenting one radio show simultaneously’. As it was then for the Skelton Show, the target to beat was On108.the regular check made weekly on Tuesdays to the Guinness World Record website, on Tuesday 2nd August there was a new world record for ‘The most radio DJs presenting one radio show simultaneously’ which was 144. This was achieved in April 2022. As a short insight to GWR, it takes at least 16 weeks to register a GWR attempt and have your application checked. After the attempt, you have to submit two sets of camera footage and a recording of the radio transmission. These have to be matched along with the adjudicator forms that also have to be completed. All of this is then loaded up via the GWR website and it takes 16 – 20 weeks to find out if you have broken the initial record. We found out just in time, 10 days before we attempted it at Appleby Show about the new record. Had we been at the Skelton Show and hit our target of 140 that would have been quite a knock for everyone. So for now Eden FM, Friends of Eden and 176 new friends on the day at the Appleby Show have completed a world record attempt, which will now be subject to internal checks by the team before it can then be submitted if everything is in order. Should we get through the first stage of the process, it might not be until January or February 2023 that we know the final outcome of our attempt. To everyone at the Appleby Show, the team would like to say a huge thank you for having us and for all those who stepped up to the mic. It’s a first for many of us in getting this far and there is a lot to follow.

In 2014 they moved into Bishop Yards, opposite St Andrews Church, by the Parish RecentlyHalls.Ihad an email from Joan, who is the founder of the business and a few weeks later, three days before printing I met Joan and Pam who would be your points of contact and discussed some ideas. The Wishing Well is an alternative Gym in Penrith where you can experience the joy of exercise at your own pace. No matter your age and physical abilities, they’ll help you to improve your health & fitness, lose weight, reduce aches and pains, and feel great. Two days later I was lying in the SlimWell 360° Thermal Wellness Pod, this Pod is the ideal healthy lifestyle system FOR EVERYONE, as featured in the pictures you now see. You can choose 1 of 22 programs, anything from a power nap, weight management, relaxation and more, pick a temperature and pick a theme. It offers heated massages of varying intensity for all occasions. A Comfortable and ergonomic, heated bed to ease those joints, as well as a cooling face fan for comfort. It’s there serving a number of purposes which you choose to help relax, de-stress refresh and so much more. I’ve never done this before; I was tempted and 30 minutes later I was then discussing that experience with Joan. Everyone is different on the inside and the outside, sometimes like Make a wish,

Evolution Vibration Plates. 20 minutes on a Vibration plate will give you the equivalent of a full 60+ minutes workout. You’ll also find the Spa Capsule, which can benefit the following conditions using 28 jets of water massage: Fibromyalgia, Arthritis, Premenstrual symptoms, and symptoms of Postpartum and menopause. Also, can boost your weight loss program. And finally, unlike the standard terms for a lot of Gyms, you get to choose, you can have ad hoc appointments, after a trial session you can try a month or three months, subject to what time you have.

13 me, you’ll want to switch off and on what was my printing day there I was relaxed and enjoying quite a different experience which I will now continue through September. Of course I’ll let you know in October. I am one of those people that has joined a traditional gyms in my life at different stages. At the gyms I’ve made it through maybe a month maybe three then stopped. I use to always be active outdoors in several sports. Running or swimming a long distance, playing football, tennis and squash but I did slow down. Then 2 years ago I had totally stopped. You might be at a time in your life when you are just too busy with home, work and other commitments and you may have lost focus on you. Well, I have, and 30 minutes later after thinking just this and after trying every diet that exists I’ve made a start. What’s 30 minutes or an hour in a week when there’s 168 hours available? Are you thinking, what is an alternative Gym, well if you can spare 30 minutes at the very least you could make an appointment and pop in and find out. This isn’t a sweat and grunt, weight lifting, tread mill, cycling Technogym. If you don’t know what that is don’t worry. As basic as I can describe this, the Wishing Well alternative Gym, is like an alternative to peddling a bike it’s an electric bike, its power assisted exercise and you wear whatever is comfortable for you. It’s not fashion it’s about feeling good. So get surfing, not on board but on line and have a look at the website you’ll find the Vibrogym So what’s next? THACKA BECK FIELD ENHANCEMENTS

It was the first Appleby Show to be held since 2019 and what a day it was! A cloudless sky and roaring temperatures set us up for a fan tastic show day. A relief for the committee after all the hard work put in to make it all happen.

APPLEBY SHOW 2022

In the main ring we had Astral Circus perform, dog agility, Cumberland and Westmorland Wrestling and the always well attended dog show. A highlight of the day had to be the Eden Young Farmers who entertained with their obstacle course antics.

Now the planning begins for next year and we hope to make it just as good, if not better than this year.

Amy Titterington, Appleby Show Secretary.

Held again on The Hanging Shaw Fields kindly loaned to us by the Winter Family.

In the afternoon we had a glorious grand parade where our President Arthur Slack pre sented trophies to their lucky winners.

Entries were as good if not better than in pre vious years meaning we had a good show of exhibitors on the field even with the high tem peratures. Along with this we had the public support us by coming through the gates. This led to a busy show field with everyone enjoy ing the numerous trade stands in attendance including Eden FM Radio in the pursuit of a Guinness World record.

Tradition, routine and the things we’ve missed –Lee Quinn Eden FM were out and, on a mission, as you may have read earlier on in this Eden Local. Radio aside The Appleby show from the first time I attended with my family it has been one of our favourites. I will confess there are a quite a few that I haven’t, or we haven’t attended. Just being at that show as described by Amy on a day like that was another turning point and a mile stone in sensing that we of getting back to a routine we once had. On this day in 2022 it was as we have expected it to be, the setting, the localness of it and that community feel. On this occasion due to the Eden FM task in hand of engaging 100’s possibly more than 1000 people I also mentioned to the show secretary that we met lot of visitors from around the UK and the world who had dropped in. As I understand some credit for this is due acknowledgement of the hard work put in by the Appleby Tourism team Well done to all and thank you to the Appleby show committee for such a fantastic day out and wonder ful representation of a traditional Cumbrian family show. My thanks also to Martin Wemyss for these wonderful photos that I will share with you now Where else would you see in the show results Class 191 - Dog the Judge would like to take home. Class 193 - The Best Biscuit Catcher. But my favourite from the first time I read it at my first Appleby show and it always will be Class 192 - Dog with the Waggiest Tail. I’m yet to see a wagometer!

Hilda May Lee tragically died in a house fire on January 24th this year. Prior to her untimely death, Hilda was a well-known business woman in the town. She was a State Registered Chiropodist for over 45 years and involved in many organisations including the Soroptimists and local Art Clubs. It was only later in Hilda’s life that she was able to focus fully on her love for art, for which she had undertaken from a young age but had not had the time to fulfil. Hilda would spend hours painting, using watercolours and latterly oils. Painting scenic views of well-known places and incorporating some animals into them. Hilda had owned two black Fell ponies that meant the world to her, until they sadly passed away. These Hilda depicted in a snow scene looking over a wall which is one of the still missing paintings. It was apparent only after Hilda’s death that many of her possessions along with her artwork were noticed missing from her home. Although Hilda had made comments about things disappearing, the family were not aware to what extent until that fateful day. Hilda’s precious artwork is of great sentimental value to her family and is priceless and irreplaceable. There are at least five further framed original paintings, most signed H.M.Lee or Hilda M Lee. The family put out a heartfelt plea for the return of the outstanding artwork, any information can be passed on via Crimestoppers quoting Crime number ‘CRI 00137091’, Cumbria Police or Hilda’s daughter Margaret Lee. Mr C also mentioned that he had concerns that they would lose some of the light, but he added, with the existing roof light was restricted by debris and moss and the new celling actually improved the light. Well, we’ve experienced a hot summer so how is it now? What was a difficult room to use all year round is now a nice ambient temperature. Mr C added it was about 4 degrees lower and it was noticeable compared to other parts of the house, especially the glass ‘hot house porch’ to the rest of the house. Then Mr C also spoke about the savings he hopes to see with his heating, which in the current climate will be a huge benefit with the radiator in his new conversion.

Project - flat conservatory roof - Customer - Mr C of Penrith, who shared the following: The price was competitive and couldn’t be beaten like for like. There were no delays with dates in booking in, the job took just two days to complete, and it didn’t interrupt with Mr C working from home. It also included a bank holiday day in June.

Con s er v a t or y Conver s ion s A regular customer of the Eden Local serving their new customers across Eden. Marshall Conservatory Conversions debut was on the back page of the Eden Local in June 2018. As a business they have supported your community magazine and radio station now for over 4 years. It’s been a while since I caught up with the team and like many of our advertisers, some of them I do see out and about some more than others. On this occasion Joe and his team were almost on my doorstep, so it was a good opportunity to meet the customer and discuss the job as it was happening. I then contacted Mr C of Penrith a few months later to see how the job had gone. As I don’t climb on roofs and take pictures, the ones I’ve taken are of a similar job, however, the importance of what we have been advertising for the last 4 years, includes gathering information after the job is complete and checking on the service and how the project has gone. On that basis, we’ve used the line - ‘be cool and unlock the potential of your Conservatory this Summer’, and the question - ‘is your conservatory too hot in the summer and too cold in the winter? Put a roof on it’.

Some employers receive lots of CVs, so you really want yours to stand out from others. Your CV is likely to be the first thing an employer sees and reads in relation to you, including your skills, knowledge and experience. You want them to invite you for an interview, so it needs to be a well-written summary that is both informative and Whilstprofessional.levels of unemployment are still high, I often hear from individuals that they are not getting invited for interviews having submitted a CV. Perhaps their CV isn’t standing out from others or perhaps they aren’t tailoring their CV sufficiently to the job they are applying for?

The type of job you are applying for may dictate the style of your CV, for example, creative, technical or academic roles may require you to showcase certain skills or knowledge in a particular way. I am, however, going to focus here on the more traditional style of CV writing. There are certain things you should include in your CV, however, the order of these is up to you. My preferred layout, however, is the following:

1. Name and contact details – start with your name and include your contact number(s) and your email address. You may also wish to include your home address.

2. Professional/personal summary – write a few lines that introduce you to the employer, stating who you are and what you can offer.

3. Specific Achievements over the last 5 years – this section is optional, however, if you are applying for senior roles, it’s good to highlight significant achievements – perhaps 6 bullet points.

Q

HR Recruitment (part 1) – What makes a good CV?

Welcome to the September edition of your local community magazine! Over the next few months, I thought I’d focus on different aspects of recruitment, starting this month with what makes a good CV. Nowadays many employers require applicants to complete application forms, however, CVs are still requested by some employers, either in addition to or instead of an application form, along with a covering letter explaining why you think you are the best person for the job! Over the years I have seen a variety of CVs – some much better than others, and although this article only details my ideas of what makes a good CV, I hope you find it helpful if you are planning to create or update an existing one.

Why do you need a good CV?

by Quinn HR

It’s probably going to be the first chance you have to promote yourself to a potential employer, so make the effort to create something you’re proud of, and get others with experience to help if you can.

What should you include?

• Send a short covering letter with your CV, even if you’re not requested to do so, outlining why you are the best applicant for the job!

• Ask others to share their CVs with you to get ideas

• Tailor your CV to the organisation you’re applying to – find out about the Company

Quinn HR – Here to Help Whether you’re an employer or employee, should you need any advice on CVs or any other employment matter, Quinn HR is only a call or an email away! We can advise on a whole range of employment matters and have access to additional, professional HR expertise should it be needed. Email: Tel:charlotte@quinnhr.co.uk0176886239407732556315

• Ideally keep your CV to 2 sides of A4 (3 pages at most) as it should be a summary, not an essay!

Tailoring your CV Make sure you have a good read through the job advert and any associated documents and information, such as a job description. It’s also highly recommended to find out about the organisation you’re applying to. Tailor your CV to what the employer is looking for, ensuring your CV covers as much detail as possible that has been included in the organisation’s job advert and job description. You can also cover some of this in your covering letter. You may just need to alter the layout of your CV to ensure the right elements of it stand out.

Other Hints and Tips You’ll probably only get one chance to make a good first impression with your CV, so consider doing the following when creating it:

4. Employment/career summary –start with your most recent role first and include all jobs whether paid, unpaid or voluntary. For each role, include the name of the employer, the job title, the dates you were employed and a short summary of your main duties.

• Use bold headings, bullet points and spacing, so that your CV is visually appealing and easy to read

6. Hobbies & interests – this section is optional. I would only include hobbies and interests if you believe they are relevant to the job and add value to your application. If you don’t have much work experience, you may want to lengthen this section to demonstrate relevant skills and experience you have gained through any hobbies and interests.

• Don’t waffle – it should be clear and concise

• Ask a friend or colleague to read your CV and tell you what they think

5. Education & qualificationsprofessional – if you don’t have much work experience, you may want to lengthen this section, however, if you have plenty of work experience, keep the education section to a minimum. Always detail your professional qualifications.

Until next time...

• Use an appropriate font such as Arial or Tahoma and ensure it is size 11 or 12

• Late blooming perennials such as asters for example Aster x frikartii ‘Monch’ has purple daisy-like flowers and keeps on going. Asters vary in height and like sunny or partially shaded spots; plant in groups for effect.

• One of my favourites for leaf colour is the burning bush shrub, a spindle called Euonymus alatus. It comes into its own in autumn with spectacular crimson leaves and extra appeal of corky ‘wings’ on its branches.

• Choose cornus shrubs (the trusty dogwood) with vibrant stem colour such as Cornus alba ‘Sibirica’ for red or Cornus sanguinea ‘Midwinter Fire’ for bright orange and plant them in groups for striking winter effects.

Top picks for autumn appeal Autumn is a great time for colour changes; not just leaves but fading flowers and seed heads.

• More diminutive plants like winter flowering heathers are lovely in pots or use heucheras, with a hellebore and some ivy and you should get a stunning seasonal display.

Changing Seasons

• I am a big fan of coloured bark and stems. Acer griseum – the paperbark maple – has utilisbirchestheattractivedistinctive, barkandwhitebarkoflikeBetulavar.jacquemontii can really stand out. Always check the ultimate height of trees before you plant though.

Now it’s September we will start feeling and seeing the effects of autumn. As the seasons change it’s a good time to reflect on how your garden will look in autumn and winter.

Tips for winter interest

• Evergreens are an easy win but think of those that might flower in winter months. The shrub Viburnum tinus ‘Eve Price’ is a favourite with pink buds opening into white flowers in late winter.

• Hydrangeas of all types but particularly the spherical or paniculate shaped flowers give added interest with their fading flower heads. Consider perennials too; if you can bear to leave them a bit before cutting back you’ll be rewarded with a tapestry of seed heads. Eyecatching ones include the globe thistle Echinops ritro or achilleas. They provide a habitat for wildlife and food for birds from seeds and berries of plants.

The essential autumn tree, the Horse Chestnut may not be native to these islands, but has provided groups of children with many a fun filled activity collecting and playing conkers on a crisp autumn Joinafternoon.meagain in October for a look at another familiar tree and some new facts that may interest and surprise you. By Pam www.projectbritain.comwww.woodlandtrust.org.ukReferences:Waggott

The World Conker Championships are held in Northampton every October with players attending from around the world and thousands coming to spectate.

Large hand-shaped leaves, sticky red buds, candle like flowers and glossy conkers in spiked green cases – it can only be the Horse Chestnut that is being described! Aesculus hippocastanum is very easy to recognise and is found in parks, gardens and on streets all over the British Isles; however it is not native to this country originating on the Balkan Peninsula and introduced from Turkey in the late 16th century. But have you ever wondered how it gets its name? Well, when the leaf falls from the twig it leaves a scar that looks like an upside down horse shoe complete with nail holes! Ground up conkers were also fed to horses to relieve them of coughs; hence the possible origin of the tree’s Aname.mature tree can grow up to 40m (46ft) and can live for around 300 years. Bees particularly enjoy the rich nectar and pollen of the tall, pink flushed white flowers while the caterpillars of the triangle moth feed on the leaves. In turn blue tits enjoy the caterpillar of the horse chestnut leaf-miner moth. In the autumn the fallen conkers provide a rich source of food for deer and other mammals. The horse chestnut has a number of uses. The wood is soft and finely textured so although it is not of any commercial use it is ideal for carving and its pale creamy white colour is attractive in decorative pieces. The conkers, which contain saponins (soap like chemicals), are used as an additive in shampoos and who remembers the advertising slogan that ‘…things happen after a Badedas Bath’; the horse chestnut enriched Bath Gelee that is still available today! Even the Vikings are said to have made soap out of soaked and crushed conkers! The chemical aescin, which can be extracted from conkers, has anti-inflammatory properties and is a good remedy for sprains and bruises in humans. The theory that placing conkers in the corners of rooms to repel spiders though is not proven! However placing conkers in your wardrobe to deter moths will work as a specific chemical is released as they dry out. Because the tree is not native there is little folklore attached to the horse chestnut but of course there is the well-known game of Conkers! Britain is thought to be the only country in the world where conkers is traditionally played. The first recorded game was held on the Isle of Wight in 1848 and has been played by thousands of children (and adults) ever since. Conkers for conkering are best collected from the ground where they will be ripe – those knocked from the tree could still be soft in the centre: not the best for a conker battle! They should be hard and round without splits or dents. To test their suitability pop them in a bowl of water – hard firm ones will sink and they are your prime weapons. In some areas they are known as ‘cheggers’ ‘cheesers’ and ‘obblyonkers’ and enthusiasts will have different approaches to preparing for competition. Purists will say that any artificial hardening of the conker is cheating but others merely consider it getting your conker matchready! Tactics include painting with clear nail varnish, baking in the oven at 120c for two hours, soaking in vinegar for two days then baking or for the more patient player storing your prime specimens in a cool dry place for 12 months.

Red squirrels

While this was good news for those keen to stay on-trend in rodent fashion, it was very bad news for the native reds. They were already struggling due to loss of woodland habitat, but now they had competition. Greys don’t attack reds, but are bigger, more aggressive and breed faster. To make matters worse, the greys carry squirrel pox, a virus that doesn’t affect them, but is fatal to reds. The invaders have yet to take over all of Cumbria, leaving some pockets of reds. Try to do your bit to help Squirrel Nutkin and chums survive, for instance by submitting a sighting to a local red squirrel group or Red Squirrels Northern England (see below), to help them track numbers. And

Here in Cumbria we are lucky enough to have one of the few remaining populations of one of Britain’s best-loved animals. The red squirrel is, without doubt, one of the cutest of all our woodland creatures and, when watching or photographing them, you sometimes get the feeling that they know it. Their ability to strike that upright pose, nibbling daintily on a nut, suggests a seasoned pro when it comes to wildlife modelling. The icing on the cake is the huge fuzzy tail that gives them their name. (‘Squirrel’ comes from Greek meaning ‘shadow tailed’ perhaps because it follows them everywhere!) It’s as if they know that they need to make a good impression if they are to survive. Britain was once home to perhaps 3 million red squirrels, but that number has dropped to about 140,000 and keeps falling. They were found all over Britain but are now restricted to a handful of small areas. In England, Cumbria is one of the few places that has any red squirrels left. Their decline is due to a competitor from abroad. In 1876 a landowner in Cheshire decided to import some grey squirrels from North America and let them roam around on his estate. For some unknown reason, a bit like those tiny dogs that live in handbags, this became a fashionable thing to do. The Victorian Brits loved the grey squirrels and the grey squirrels loved Britain, so much so that within a few years they were everywhere.
