Welcome to the 13th Inverness Film Festival For the 13th year of our festival I decided we would take a look at people who are brave enough to move away from their comfort zones and embark on an adventure, whether that be by choice or circumstance.

We open the festival with the Scottish premiere of Brooklyn which sees Saoirse Ronan leaving her home in rural Ireland in the 1950s to begin a new life in America.

Malala Yousafzai was forced to leave Pakistan after being the focus of a Taliban attack after speaking out about the right for young girls to be educated, her journey to Nobel laureate is told in He Named Me Malala. Viggo Mortensen plays a French teacher in Algeria during the revolution with France who is made to transport a Muslim prisoner across impossible terrain in the powerful Far From Men. In Pawn Sacrifice a troubled Bobby Fischer (Tobey Maguire) takes on the might of both Cold War superpowers in order to challenge the best the Soviet Empire has to offer at chess, a wonderful analogy of the Cold War itself. There are many other human journeys in the festival too, I hope that you enjoy travelling with them Something a little different and a first for us is a screening that requires blindfolds and headphones. Carnival of Souls is an experimental horror 3D binaural audio experience which creates a sense of intimate proximity that immerses you in the drama. It was inspired by the experiences of blind cinemagoers and promises to be really interesting.

Designed by Hebrides based artist Steve Dilworth, we take great pride in knowing that a little piece of our festival has taken up residence in all corners of the globe.

HE NAMED ME MALALA

From the age of 10, Malala Yousafzai has campaigned for the rights of girls to receive an education. Using a pseudonym, she wrote a blog for the BBC detailing her life under Taliban rule and her views on promoting education for girls. In October 2012, the then 15-year-old Malala was targeted by the Taliban and severely wounded by a gunshot while traveling home on her school bus. Miraculously she survived.

Malala, who turned eighteen this year, is now a Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and the Co-Founder of The Malala Fund, a non-profit organisation whose work around the world focuses on the rights of girls to quality education. He Named Me Malala is an intimate portrait of this extraordinary young girl’s life.

The beautifully-shot second feature from the director of Shell (2012 Inverness Film Festival) is an intense family drama set against the stunning backdrop of the Hebridean island of Iona.

Named after her birthplace, Iona, returns to the island with her teenage son to seek refuge from a violent crime in Glasgow. Her return to the island exposes her tormented son to a way of life she rejected, and sends a shockwave through the family she left behind.

Bucharest; 1959. Anti-Semitism is on the rise. During a New Year’s Eve party in a whorehouse, five high-ranking Jewish members of the Romanian Communist Party decide to form a gang and pull off an audacious act of political agitation.

Posing as a movie crew, they manage to pull off the crime of the century – holding up the Romanian National Bank by making it look like they were shooting a film.

But what comes next is even more unbelievable when the group is handed down a punishment more absurd than the crime itself. Based on a bizarre true story, this dark comedy drama is a breath of fresh air.

OUR LITTLE SISTER UMIMACHI DIARY SCOTTISH PREMIERE

The latest family drama from Japanese master Hirokazu Koreeda (I Wish, 2012 Inverness Film Festival), Our Little Sister sees the veteran director revisiting familiar subjects of family, love and cooking, all delivered in his tender and understated cinematic style.

This beautifully crafted family drama tells the story of three sisters who live together in a large house in the city of Kamakura. When their absent father dies, they travel to the countryside for his funeral. There they meet and take under their wing a teenage half-sibling they never knew.

All told, the patience of the filmmaking is pretty remarkable, a feat of embroidery slowly taking shape, and it inspires a corresponding faith in the willing viewer – it’s an invitation to sit back and settle in for one of Koreeda’s loveliest films.

FAR FROM MEN LION DES HOMMES SCOTTISH PREMIERE

Algeria, 1954. While the rebellion rumbles in the valley, Daru teaches kids in a tiny schoolhouse high in the Atlas Moutains.

In the midst of an icy winter, French soldiers bring him local Algerian man, Mohamed, who has confessed to killing his cousin, and ask Daru to escort him to the court a day’s journey away. Daru refuses on the grounds he would be walking Mohamed to his death. But when the soldiers leave and Mohamed refuses to run he finds he doesn’t have much choice. The two men decide to confront the unknown and fight together to gain their freedom, forming an unexpected bond along the way.

This adaptation of the short story The Guest by French-Algerian philosopher Albert Camus features an atmospheric score by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis.

October 1944, Auschwitz-Birkenau. Saul Ausländer is a Hungarian member of the Sonderkommando, the group of Jewish prisoners isolated from the camp and forced to assist the Nazis in the machinery of large-scale extermination.

While working in one of the crematoriums, Saul discovers the corpse of a boy he takes for his son. As the Sonderkommando plans a rebellion, Saul decides to carry out an impossible task: save the child's body from the flames, find a rabbi to recite the mourner’s Kaddish and offer the boy a proper burial.

László Nemes’ stunning debut received a rapturous critical reception at Cannes 2015 where it was awarded the Grand Prix.

In 1992, following the collapse of the Soviet Union, war broke out between Georgia and the autonomous region of Abkhazia, killing around 20,000 people and displacing more than 250,000. An uneasy ceasefire was agreed upon.

The Enguri River forms the border between Georgia and the breakaway Republic of Abkhazia. Every spring the river brings fertile soil from the Caucasus down to the plains, creating a tiny island. The island might exist for years, or might be swept up any minute. United by hopes for a better future, 70-year-old Abga and his teenage grandaughter Asida decide to take the risk to escape poverty and try to cultivate the land. They even build a wooden cottage which protects them from the hot sun. But when Asida one day discovers a young man on the island, their new idyllic world is threatened.

Güeros is a road movie in which the travellers barely manage to leave town.

A coming of age comedy which pays homage to the French New Wave.

Being a somewhat unusual film, Güeros begins with a rather different kind of explosion: a water bomb bursts in a baby stroller. It is thrown by teenager Tomás from a block of flats. Since the lad is clearly too much of a handful for his mother, she packs him off to stay with his big brother who is studying in Mexico City. Tomás brings a cassette along with him; the tape is part of his father’s legacy and contains the music of Epigmenio Cruz. When the trio learns that their idol is in hospital fading fast and alone, they set off in their rusty heap of a car to pay their last respects to this one-time rock star.

Dépardieu and Huppert play an estranged couple that reunites in California’s Death Valley as per the instructions in their son’s suicide note. He gives them specific sites to go to on certain days and at certain times. If they do so, he writes, he will meet them there.

Uncertain of what it all means, they go along with it, fuelled by guilt and a hope for a sense of closure.

In the late 1970s, from a tenement flat in Edinburgh, Bob Last and Hilary Morrison operated their record label Fast Product. A predecessor to Rough Trade and Factory Records, Fast Product quickly became the hub for a group of ground-breakingly talented musicians. STEVE MCQUEEN: THE MAN & LE MANS In May 1970, Steve McQueen, one of Hollywood’s biggest stars as well as being arguably the coolest man on the planet, flew to France to begin work on the film that meant more to him than any other... Le Mans.

He began by filming in and around the actual race, capturing priceless footage.

Visually it all looked amazing but coming up with a compelling narrative around the racing SCOTTISH PREMIERE action proved to be less Steve’s thing and the production began to encounter many difficulties.

Steve had wanted this to be the greatest racing movie of all time but the end result was a commercial and critical flop and his career was never quite the same afterwards.

This fascinating documentary is the story of how one of the most volatile, charismatic stars of his generation, who seemingly lost so much he held dear in the pursuit of his dream, nevertheless followed it to the end.

When you're racing, it's life. Anything that happens before or after is just waiting.

Featuring colourful footage of 1960s Inverness, join curator Shona Thomson for a fascinating look at how Scotland’s ‘touns’ have been portrayed on the big screen since the early 1900s, with a unique selection of films from the National Library of Scotland Moving Image Archive. The event includes a panel discussion with special guests around the issues raised by the films, many of which were commissioned by development corporations and tourism associations. How has the vision of a Scottish city changed for those of us who live in urban communities today?

CLAVEL James Robert Sinclair was born in 1930 in the ben (the 'good') end of the croft house at Clavel on the South Mainland of Shetland. He has lived there all his life. As he grew older the crofthouse fell into disrepair. Following a stay in hospital, James Robert reluctantly moved to sheltered housing in the nearby village of Bigton, but James Robert needs to be at Clavel to be happy.

Following him through the ‘sheep’ year this film is a study of a man, his way of life and those who help him live it. The music was written and performed by Shetland musicians Alice Mullay and Jonathan Ritch. The song Dagalien was sung by men from Bigton who have known James Robert all their lives.

Following Clavel Shona Main will introduce screenings of A Crofter’s Life in Shetland and Jenny's Arctic Diary by Scottish film-maker Jenny Gilbertson – on whom Shona is currently researching a book.

CABAC: NEW MOVING IMAGE FROM SCOTLAND UK PREMIERE

CABAC is a touring programme of artist's moving image developed by Luke Collins for LUX Scotland. It presents recent work by six exceptional artists who are shaping the form and content of experimental film and video in Scotland: Rob Kennedy, Duncan Marquiss, Charlotte Prodger, Dennis and Debbie Club, Kari Robertson and Stina Wirfelt. Their work draws relationships between a deep history of moving image culture and our contemporary technologies of capture and display.

The title of the programme CABAC is the name of a type of encoding used in digital video and reflects on how this selection represents us, represents our contemporaries, and represents the intimate connections between our local and our global Scotland.

A new, unique adaptation of director Herk Harvey’s 1962 experimental horror film oddity, Carnival of Souls has been stripped and adapted to become an audio-only experience inside a darkened cinema, inspired by classical adventure radio serials and sensory deprivation methods.

Commissioned by Film Hub North West Central with an advisory group of blind and partially sighted audience members, the broadcast is relayed across wireless headsets incorporating binaural audio – a technique that creates the illusion of the action happening to and around the listener. From approaching footsteps to whispered breath, you will be fully immersed in the unfolding drama.

Everyone who attends a Festival screening this year is invited to vote for their favourite film.

How to vote To vote you will be given a slip of paper before each screening, you just need to give the film you’ve seen a rating (by marking, or tearing the slip) and then hand it back to a member of Eden Court’s staff to ensure that your vote will count.

TICKET DEALS Any 5 films (excluding Opening/Closing) for £25/£40 for two people.

RESERVATIONS Tickets may be reserved in person or by phone up to one week in advance for any performance at Eden Court. We will hold reserved tickets for three working days. Please note that all reservations which are not paid for in full within three working days will be released for sale.

REDUCED RATES Reduced price seats are available for most performances. Only one reduction applies per ticket.

Reductions generally apply to under 26s and all full-time students, people over 60, people claiming unemployment benefit, people with disabilities, people on income support and parties of 10 or more. We may ask to see proof of reduced rate status. People with disabilities may bring an escort at a reduced rate price if assistance is needed. Eden Court is a member of Highland Council’s Plus One scheme. For further details please contact Highland Council.

POSTAGE CHARGES We can post your tickets to you for just £1.00 per transaction. You can of course collect your tickets in person at any time, either from Box Office or from our Sales Desk.

BOOKING FEES The following Booking Fees apply per ticket to phone reservations and all online and phone sales: 50p for tickets up to £9.99 £1.00 for tickets £10.00 – £19.99 £2.00 for tickets £20.00 and over Classes and other education activities will not attract a fee.

GIFT VOUCHERS Gift Vouchers make an ideal present and are available from the Box Office in any denomination.

Please note that we do not accept Theatre Tokens. When using a voucher when booking online please omit the dash between the voucher number.
