North Collins School Spirit Week North Collins Central School held its Spirit Week and Homecoming the week of September 26 through October 1. Each day of the week had a theme, starting with ‘Merica Monday, where all students were encouraged to dress in their best patriotic garb. This was followed by Twin Tuesday, Worldly Wednesday, Disney Thursday, and finally, Color War Day on Friday. An annual favorite, Color War Day features students dressing in a color designated by their grade (7th graders: yellow, 8th graders: green, freshmen: red, sophomores: blue, juniors: black and seniors: white). This makes for an especially colorful Pep Rally in the afternoon, featuring games like turkey bowling, Hungry Hungry Hippos and the elephant walk.

Later that day, the Homecoming Parade marched down Main Street in North Collins, showcasing parade floats created by each grade according to their designated country. Poland, Spain, Ireland, Italy, and France were all represented, with the juniors taking first place for their Egypt-themed float. The North Collins combined junior/ senior high marching band also made a triumphant return to the streets, keeping the beat with their Bahamas-flavored percussive instruments. Once back at the high school, students, parents and community members enjoyed a bonfire and filed into the gym to watch a game of Bubble Soccer.

On Saturday, October 1 our high school turf was kept busy with games all day long, including our annual Alumni soccer game featuring odd graduation years pairing up against even. All sports contests on the turf that day won their respective games, giving North Collins a lot of be proud of. Finally, Homecoming Week was capped off by our annual Homecoming Dance, which featured a Fire & Ice theme. Nathan Turnbull and Angela Filkov were selected as Homecoming King and Queen, while Tyler Jimerson and Megan Wittmeyer were elected Prince and Princess. It was a perfect way to round out a wonderful week of Eagles Pride!

Southtowns Catholic School Field Trip to Harvest Happenings On Tuesday, September 27, Mrs. Ross’s Kindergarten Class, Mrs. Johnson’s Grade 1 Class and Mrs. Hills’s Grade 2 Class visited “Harvest Happenings” in Forestville, New York. Students had the opportunity to celebrate fall while visiting a grape farm! Their field trip included tasting grapes and a variety of grape juices, building a scarecrow, a hayride through the decorated vineyards and a visit with farm animals. The students also were able to take home a small pumpkin. Pictured: Mrs. Hill’s Grade 2 Class.

Little Free Library Coming To Boys and Girls Club of Eden Little Free Library is an international organization that promotes literacy and the love of reading by building free book exchanges. Bob and Kelly Grimaldi, of Derby, are the stewards of a registered Little Free Library, which will stand in front of the Boys and Girls Club of Eden starting October 8th. The Grimaldis hope that the library will contribute to Eden’s sense of community and foster a “pay-it-forward” attitude. They invited anyone and everyone to the grand opening of the Little Free Library on Saturday, October 8th at noon.

7th Annual

3 Due to unfavorable weather on the weekend of September 17th, the 7th annual Brian Galfo Memorial Softball Tournament was canceled after a few hours of play. However, the always anticipated Memorial Benefit Party at Mickey Rats - Captain Kidd’s was a major success. The numerous raffles, donations and the Chinese auction baskets provided by all the local individuals and businesses helped ensure our goal, which is to provide scholarship opportunities for Lake Shore School Senior athletes.

From all of us involved with the annual event, we would like to provide a special thank you to Richie & Tommy Alberts, Mickey Rats - Captain Kidd’s & Certo Brothers Distributing for making this memorial benefit possible. In addition, we would like to thank our family, friends, community and surrounding businesses for your generous support, baskets, donations and volunteered time. Fall is a great time to enjoy the great outdoors. Beautiful fall foliage coupled with great weather compel many people to spend ample time outdoors before the arrival of harsh winter weather drives them back indoors. The following are a handful of actvities that are tailor-made for fall. * Raking Leaves: While raking leaves might not jump out at you as a great way to spend a nice fall afternoon, families often find raking leaves together soon turns into a fun day in the yard. Build leaf piles and let the kids jump in! When raking, encourage kids to collect some colorful leaves for homemade crafts. * Hayride: Hayrides are another fall tradition, and many farms offer relaxing hayrides throughout fall. Younger children who may tire if asked to patrol an apple orchard for apples might find a hayride is more their speed. Some farms may even allow customers to walk the grounds and visit the animals on the premises. * Hiking: Hiking is a fun activity that can be enjoyed nearly year-round, but it’s especially enjoyable in the fall. Instead, fall temperatures tend to be mild and comfortable, allowing hikers to fully enjoy their often beautiful surroundings. * Fall Mazes: Visiting a corn maze or straw maze is another activity that many people instantly associate with fall. Some farmers transform their cornfields into corn mazes once the temperatures dip, and such mazes can be fun for adults and children alike. Though adolescents can often be trusted to find their way through mazes, younger kids should be accompanied by an adult. * Pumpkins: Go pick your future jack-o’-lantern from a nearby pumpkin patch or find one at a local market. Let your youngsters pick out their own pumpkins and then spend the rest of the day carving them at home. And don’t forget to save those seeds, which can be roasted over an open flame to make a delicious snack.

Flexovit Hosts Congressman Collins for Reopening Tour

Eden Students Attend National Tour Load-in at Shea’s

On September 21st Eden students Merrick Allen, Kristen Pszonak, and Adam Rakiecki were invited to attend Shea’s load in of the Tony award winning musical Finding Neverland along with Mrs. Tylock. This load in consisted of over 20 tractor trailers of lighting equipment, sound equipment, set pieces, props, and costumes that were being installed in the main theater for the length of the musical’s run. The Eden students were able to watch from the balcony as over 30 crew members installed all the technical equipment on Shea’s main stage. Students were also given the opportunity to have a question and answer session with the CEO of Shea’s Performing Arts Center, Tony Conte, as well as the Production Manager of Finding Neverland, Jason Jeunker. Both of these theater professionals were able to give the attending students a backstage look at how you fund, coordinate, and execute a multi million dollar production. Both Merrick and Kristen were also interviewed by Channel 4 News about what theater meant to them, how bringing these large productions to Buffalo would help the local economy, and about their experience attending the Finding Neverland load in. On October 5, 2016, U.S. Congressman Chris Collins (RNY-27) joined representatives from Flexovit USA Inc. to tour their recently reopened Angola manufacturing facility and discuss pressing rail and manufacturing issues with various rail stakeholders and local officials. The Railway Engineering-Maintenance Suppliers Association (REMSA) coordinated the event.

The tour was led by Tom Calabrese, CEO, Flexovit. The group toured Flexovit’s manufacturing facility, which was severely damaged by excessive snowfall in 2014. Flexovit has since been working around the clock to repair the facility and bring production back online. They are proud to, once again, provide high-skilled manufacturing employment opportunities in their reopened 100,000 sq. ft. facility.

“We are honored to be joined by Congressman Collins and our local officials to share in this proud and emotional moment for us,” said Calabrese. “Our business and employees were pushed to the brink, but we pushed through adversity and never gave up on our community. We have called the Angola-Evans area home for almost 40 years and could not be happier to share in our reopening with our community and elected officials.”

Founded in 1977, Flexovit USA specializes in the production of high producing abrasive products for portable power tools. Their grinding and rail cutting products serve the rail industry and were demonstrated as part of the tour. Flexovit manufactures exclusively in the United States and employs approximately 80.

Congressman Collins focused his remarks on encouraging economic development in Western New York, and ensuring a strong, efficient, and safe freight rail system to connect New York’s agriculture producers to the global market.

“A strong and efficient railroad is crucial for getting Western New York’s goods to market,” said Congressman Collins. “It was a honor to learn more about Flexovit and witness their commitment to our region firsthand. We look forward to working with our local businesses to continue to support policies that provide high-skill and high-wage jobs.”

The rail stakeholder group discussed the bipartisan and bicameral Building Rail Access for Customers and the Economy (BRACE) Act, which would make the Short Line Tax Credit permanent. This effort will allow the nation’s small, local freight railroads to increase their reinvestments to upgrade and expand the “first and last mile” of their transportation infrastructure. The bill has garnered over 180 bi-partisan cosponsors in the House, including Congressman Collins. The group also discussed recent regulation initiatives issued by the Surface Transportation Board (STB) on reciprocal switching and commodity regulation. These efforts risk creating major inefficiencies in the national freight network and artificially creating government-mandated price caps. These efforts would lead to reduced capital investment in freight rail which is critical to supporting high-paying rail supply jobs throughout the United States.

Also in attendance were: Robert Biondi, President, Evans-Brant Chamber of Commerce; Pierre Hawkins, Director of Sales & Marketing, Flexovit; Supervisor Mary Hosler, Town of Evans; Bob Riehle, Director of Manufacturing and Human Resources, Flexovit; Starr Torres, Marketing Coordinator, Flexovit; Sean Winkler, Grassroots Coordinator, REMSA. In New York, 39 freight railroads operate and maintain over 3,400 miles of track and support over 3,400 jobs.

REMSA is a non-profit trade group representing over 350 railway engineers, contractors, and consultants and maintenance-of-way suppliers across the country. The $5 billion railroad maintenance-of-way industry supports over 35,000 jobs nationwide. Ten REMSA members maintain operations in New York.
