ACES Speaker Whets Appetites for the Mediterranean Diet
Passenger Train Trips on the Buffalo Southern Railroad
The BC&J Scenic Railway Co. is focused on developing and operating excursion steam and diesel-electric passenger train excursions in the Western NY area. Passenger Train trips on the Buffalo Southern Railroad can be run between Buffalo, NY and Eden, NY and trips are subject to track & crew availability. On October 1st and 2nd, 2016 the steam locomotive Visco 6 owned by Scott Symans will depart from Zittel’s Country Market, 4415 Southwestern Blvd., Hamburg, NY and travel to Water Valley. Future passenger’s trips for Fall Foliage, Polar Express will run later this year if there is enough interest. If any group, business or individual wants to charter a trip for any occasion we will consider it and can be contacted by email at bcjscenic@gmail.com or by regular mail, BC&J Scenic Railway Co. Inc., PO Box 292 Eden, NY 14057. Submitted by BC &J Scenic Railway Co. Inc. ___________
What do we, in the United States have, that Crete and other Mediterranean countries don’t have? To Jennifer Johnson, wellness coordinator for Blue Cross and Blue Shield of WNY, the answer is heart disease, of course. And the best strategic weapon against heart disease, she explained during a presentation at the Eden Public Library at the invitation of ACES (Active Citizens for Eden Seniors), is the Mediterranean diet, and it’s easily available to us all. Cholesterol- lowering drugs, anti-inflammation medications, and, say, a well used gym membership, can reduce the risk of heart disease for many on traditional diets. But Johnson sees the Mediterranean diet, based largely on whole grains, fruits and vegetables, fish and seafood, healthy fats such as olive oil, along with beans, nuts and moderate amounts of poultry, cheese andy yogurt, as something like a nutritional “magic bullet” against heart disease, diabetes and other illnesses. In the 1950’s Dr. Ansel Keys, a University of Minnesota scientist studying heart disease, looked at thousands of men in seven countries. He found that the men of Crete had the lowest rate of heart disease. Besides eating a typical Mediterranean diet, the Crete men led highly active lives. “They worked together and grew food together, foraged for food, sat down and ate together,” Johnson said. “they had a respect for their food that we don have.” Taking a page from the Crete diet, Johnson stressed the importance of eating lots of vegetables- in salads, soups, stews and even on pizzas- and lots of fruit as well as smaller amounts of meats, also beans, fish- fresh or canned- twice a week, along with whole grains, healthy fats- especially extra-virgin olive oil and nuts- and maybe a vegetarian meal once a week. “Be active every day,” She added. “Take more steps.” And in advice that no doubt encouraged the Eden ACES senior citizens who have been campaigning for a community meals program, she added” “Don’t eat- DINE! Enjoy meals with other people.” Submitted by ACES ___________
Eden Chamber Hosts SCORE Outpost for Mentoring Business Operators
SCORE is America’s premier small business assistance organization. The Buffalo Niagara Chapter, one of the oldest and best of some 300+ SCORE chapters across the country, serves 8 WNY counties. To make this work more conveniently there are 11 outposts in WNY. Our Eden Chamber is sponsoring a new one, with mentoring sessions in the Chamber office (8226 N. Main St.) starting in October. SCORE volunteers, seasoned business people (some retired and some still “at it”), want to share their decades of hands-on, real-world business experience. They know what it takes to start, run and grow businesses AND know how to access a variety of helpful local resources. Let SCORE help you (or someone you know) start up your business or get your new business up and running successfully. Take advantage of this free and confidential opportunity to pursue your business ideas, find paths to success, avoid pitfalls, create better business plans and improve odds of finding business funding...Experience matters! Regular mentoring appointment times, typically one hour duration, for the Eden outpost are at 4pm, 5pm, and 6pm on the first and third Wednesday of each month. You can ask questions, learn more about it or book an appointment by calling SCORE at 716-5514301 or visit the website at www.BuffaloNiagara.SCORE.org. Just for perspective, SCORE consists of 11,000 volunteer business professionals nationwide and in it’s 52 year history, has helped more than 10 million clients all across the country. Submitted by M. Brant Farnham Historical Socety Collects Signatures on the Farnham Elementary School Photos
As a project for our historical society and in preparation for Farnham’s 125th Anniversary, we have been collecting Farnham School alumni signatures on two photos. We have a photo of the “wooden” Farnham School, a beautiful building built in 1892 but destroyed by a fire in 1946, and a photo of the more “modern” Farnham School (1948-1977), which was built to replace the school that burned. This “modern” school no longer in use, was demolished in 2013. Both Farnham Elementary (Grammar) Schools were located where the Dollar General stands today. Representing the Brant- Farnham Historical Society, on the 27th of September I was honored to pay a visit to our oldest Town of Brant citizen Mr. Angelo S. Militello Jr. The initial purpose of my visit was to request that he sign the mat of the historical society’s framed photo of the “wooden” Farnham School. Angelo was 6 years of age when his family moved from Buffalo, N.Y. to Farnham, N.Y. He attended the “wooden” Farnham school for grades 1-8, graduating from the 8th grade in 1932. Upon graduation he had the choice of attending Angola High School or Silver Creek High School. He chose Silver Creek. What is interesting to note is that in order to attend the high school - he (along with the other students) traveled to and from high school by train! He boarded the train at the railroad train station on Railroad Avenue in Farnham, and arrived at the railroad train station in Silver Creek, N.Y. (Once located near whereTops is today). From there, he would walk to the High School which was (and the building still is, although since closed) located on Main Street. He of course reversed the trip to come home. 82 years ago, Angelo married the beautiful Mary Falzone who was born in Farnham, in the house at the corner of Detroit and Perry Streets. Mary had also attended the ”wooden” Farnham School and Silver Creek High School. Sadly, Mary passed away in October 2006. Together, Mary and Angelo had three children, Mary Ann (Ball), Larry, and Cindy (Miller), and each were able to visit with me this day as well. I was excited to learn that Mary Ann attended the “wooden” Farnham School just as her father and mother once had. She recalled that the wooden school burned when she was in the 5th grade. In 1948, Mary Ann graduated from the “modern” Farnham School, although she never actually attended classes in the new building. Classes were held elsewhere until the construction was completed. She was a student in the last graduating 8th grade class from the “modern” Farnham School and she was pleased to be able to sign both photos. Larry and Cindy, both attended the “modern” Farnham School and were happy to sign as well! Larry was a student in the last graduating 6th grade class of the “modern” Farnham School. Today “Ange” is 98 years old, and will be turning 99 in this coming December! He was honored at this year’s Brant Summer Festival for being our Oldest Citizen in Brant, N.Y. He has wealth of knowledge regarding Farnham and Brant’s community life and the multitude of businesses that once inhabited the village of Farnham through the years. The rest of our visit was spent with various reminisces about how Brant and Farnham used to be, sprinkled with the many interesting stories of Ange’s life and his countless accomplishments. He has enjoyed a remarkable life and has a terrific memory. The time flew by! I look forward to stopping over again as there is still so much to learn about the history of the Farnham community, of which Ange and his family played key roles. The Brant-Farnham Historical Society is grateful to have gathered signatures from Mr. Angelo S. Militello Jr. and all his children, and I am grateful for their welcoming hospitality. The Brant Farnham Historical Society now has seven names on the mat of the “wooden” Farnham school photo and we look forward to adding many more! Pictured: Angelo S. Militello Jr. and his daughter Mary Ann Ball, both signed the Farnham school photo for the Brant Farnham Historical Society; Angelo S. Militello Jr., Brant’s oldest Citizen at 98 years, is shown signing the “wooden” Farnham School photo, which he attended and graduated from in 1932. Submitted by Patty Friend ___________

“There is that speaketh like the piercings of a sword: but the tongue of the wise is health.” - Proverbs 12:18 It is possible to say the right things the wrong way. Some people’s words jab like a piercing sword. Their words wound others deeply. When someone is wounded over and over again the spirit is often broken. They may avoid that person to escape any more harm. Others bring health by their words. They are encouraging and kind. They are a delight to be around. They build up others and do not tear them down. It was said of the Lord that those who heard Him “wondered at the gracious word which proceeded out of His mouth” (Luke 4:20). To be like the Lord we need to know Him. Then show charity at home, church, neighborhood, workplace, etc. with words that bring health to people.

A Few Must-Do’s for your Car This Fall
Welcome Fall
• Protect your car’s exterior from winter salt and sand by having a protective coating applied. • Have the battery and brakes checked and replaced if necessary before the cold weather hits.
PREPARE AND BE READY FOR THE COLDER WEATHER! Automotive • Commercial Agricultural • Motorsports
• Take a serious look at your tires. When the tread depth gets low, it is time to replace. Also, check your pressure regularly as the weather changes. • Get your coolant system flushed. A freshly flushed compartment with fresh antifreeze can help keep your car working well in extreme temperatures.

“Delicious autumn! My very soul is wedded to it, and if I were a bird I would fly about the earth seeking the successive autumns.” -- George Eliot The calendar may say it’s fall, but we’ve been blessed this year with many warm, lovely days that seem more like summer. But soon we’ll see the leaves burst into color, the geese forming their aerial graphics, the last blooms in the garden. Already the sun sets earlier and earlier and it’s dark long before we’re ready for it to be. We have to remember that there are many people who never experience our lovely autumn days. Those who live where it is always “summer” have no idea of the joys the season can provide.... a drive just to see the colors, picking the perfect pumpkins, apple picking, a football game, a hike in the woods with the crunch of leaves beneath your feet. Enjoy each day because we all know what comes next!
