Keeping the Past Alive

Ellsworth Nolan Recieves Proclamation From Brant Town Board As is standard protocol, the September 13th Town of Brant Board meeting was called to order and the Pledge to the Flag recited. The very first item on that night’s agenda, was to pay tribute to an exceptional Town of Brant resident - Ellsworth Nolan. Town of Brant Supervisor Lenny Pero announced that Ellsworth Nolan, who has lived his entire life in the Town of Brant, and through the years has served the community as a Farnham Volunteer Firefighter, Fire Chief and also as Superintendent of the Farnham DPW, is a hero within our community. Ellsworth Nolan saved the life of a drowning child.

Earlier this year Ellsworth received from the New York State Assembly, a certificate of merit as a 2016 Fire Fighter of the Year for his heroic action and a 2016 Fire Fighter of the year award from the Southwestern Association of Volunteer Firemen for his saving of this child. Supervisor Leonard K. Pero and the Brant Town Board also wished to recognize Ellsworth for saving this young life. Supervisor Pero read a proclamation he had prepared for this occasion, which in part stated the following: ...“WHEREAS, The Brant Town Board recognizes a special resident of our town, that of Mr. Ellsworth Nolan, who through his actions, courage, heroic skills and selfless determination saved the life of a drowning child…. ...WHEREAS, Ellsworth Nolan through his life saving action has brought about a great honor not only upon himself but for our entire community…. ...FURTHERMORE, The Town Board and residents of the Town of Brant will applaud you for all of your achievements and Forever Thank you for all of your devoted years of service that you have unselfishly given to honor your community.”…

A motion was made by Supervisor Leonard K. Pero and seconded unanimously by all board members that “Wednesday, September 14, 2016 be recognized in the Town of Brant as: ELLSWORTH NOLAN DAY! All Town residents will honor this day for your dedication to our community.”

In addition to the supervisor and town board, also in attendance to witness, congratulate and proudly applaud this most special recognition were Town of Brant Clerk Barb Daniels, Police Chief Don Hepkins, Ellsworth’s wife Jamie, his mother Ellen, his father Jim, his son Josh, his brother Allen, his nephew Jeffrey and over 25 friends, neighbors and members of the Brant Community.

A couple months ago during a late-summer afternoon, Calvin Henry of Sisson Highway in Eden received a surprising visit from a young boy. They sat on the front porch as Calvin shared stories about when he was young. He showed an old newspaper clipping of a mail cart powered by a horse delivering mail to his father Albert D. Henry in 1905. Calvin explained the old mailbox was eventually retired to his barn somewhere. After seeing the picture and hearing the story the young boy was intrigued enough to ask permission to locate it. The young boy emerged minutes later eyes riveted to a oblong metal object creased, dented, and rusted. With purpose in his heart. The young boy asked if he could take it home. With a deadline of fourteen days. He worked feverishly, gently pounding, reforming, sanding, and painting the newly refined relic, with custom black letters articulately placed on with a fine paintbrush. A new flag was also hand fabricated out of sheet metal to replace the missing one. Exactly fourteen days later. The young boy returned and presented Mr. Henry with his original mailbox from the early 1900’s. He was then asked to look inside.

Upon opening the lid, Mr Henry’s eyes began to water as he reached in and read off a card “Happy 90th Birthday.”

(The past was kept alive thanks to fourteen year old Jimmy Keller. Jimmy is the grandson of Marie and the late Frederick C. Keller of Eden). ___________

Buffalo State Graduates Buffalo State is pleased to congratulate the following students, who completed the requirements to earn their baccalaureate degrees in summer 2016.

Grace Ohmit of Eden earned a degree in art history. Brandon Luther of North Collins earned a degree in earth sciences. Maria Carr of North Boston earned a degree in fashion and textile technology. ___________

Senator Gallivan at Eden Library State Senator Patrick Gallivan visited the Eden Library on September 13. Through his office, the library has been the recipient of Bullet Aid funds which have been used to purchase additional technology items. Bullet Aid funds have helped to purchase additional laptop computers for the library and a new flat screen TV that can be used for audio/visual presentations as well as to show movies. The Eden Library is grateful for this funding.

Few items signal the fall harvest season more than the bright, orange pumpkins that dot fields and liven up displays outside of homes and businesses. Come fall, many pumpkins are turned into grinning jack-o-lanterns just in time for Halloween. But there are many other uses for pumpkins as well.

Pumpkins are believed to have originated in North America. Early Native Americans relied on pumpkins as a source of food that helped them survive long winters. Pumpkins could be roasted, baked, boiled, and dried, and they were eaten and used as medicine. Pumpkin blossoms were added to stews. The shells of the pumpkins could be dried and used as eating and storage vessels.

While pumpkins may now be symbolic of Halloween, the following are a handful of additional ways this versatile fruit can be put to use.

Beauty regimen: Pumpkins contain a number of essential vitamins and minerals that can help replenish the skin. Pumpkin purée can be mixed with honey, aloe vera gel, olive oil, and a bit of cornmeal to create an exfoliating mask for the face or body.

Pumpkin also can be used to rejuvenate dry or tired skin from cold weather. Honey, pumpkin and yogurt can be mixed together and used to condition hair. Let the mixture sit for 15 to 20 minutes, and then wash it out and shampoo.

Foods and beverages: Pumpkin purée is the basis for many tasty, pumpkin-infused treats. Purée can be used in pies, cakes, muffins, breads, and many additional foods. Pumpkin purée also may be found in certain beverages, such as smoothies and shakes. A bit of spiced purée may appear as flavoring in teas and coffees. Roasted pumpkin seeds make a healthy treat. Foodies suggest using the seeds from “sugar pumpkins” or the ones best for making pies. Boil the seeds for a few minutes before draining. Spray a baking sheet with non-stick spray and put the seeds in a single layer. Bake at 400 F for 20 minutes. Allow to cool and serve. Pumpkin wines and beers are popular as well. There are many recipes for developing sweet, fermented beverages, which tend to be especially popular in the fall. The “guts” of the pumpkin can be simmered along with aromatics and other vegetables to create a vegetable stock perfect for soups and broths.

Decorations: Pumpkins can also add to one’s home décor during the fall. Pumpkins can be carved for Halloween displays, hollowed-out to hold tealights or simply left on tables and used as centerpieces. Larger pumpkins may be used as natural flower pots for mums or other seasonal floral displays. As the Native Americans once did, pumpkins can be hollowed-out and used as bowls to serve favorite soups and dips. Use a hollowed, small pumpkin as a natural aromatic candle holder. Cut holes in the sides to vent the exhaust. Rub aromatic spices, such as cloves, nutmeg, allspice, cinnamon, and vanilla bean, on the inside of the pumpkin. Insert a beeswax candle in the bottom of the pumpkin and let it send inviting aromas into the air.

Pumpkins are a versatile fruit that can serve many purposes beyond just jack-o-lanterns and pies.
