LETTER FROM THE EDITOR I
get nostalgic every September. It’s crazy to think that three years ago CVLUX was merely a dream, and here we are going into our fourth year. Over the past three years I have met so many amazing people who have left an indelible mark on my life and our company. When I look back at the first edition of CVLUX, I see how much the magazine has grown. We are constantly adding editors and contributors to elevate the content of each edition. One of my most favorite photo shoots comes from our very first issue. The High Flying Adored shoot was shot at Fresno Chandler Executive Airport by my dear friend and photographer, Nikki Gruenstein Tibbett. The stark contrast between the desolate airfield and the over-the-top fashion makes for stunning cinematic images. Not only has our content continued to evolve, but also, so has our mission. We are leading the way on the digital front with our blog the LUX daily, which we launched at the beginning of 2015. This platform allows our readers and advertisers to connect on a daily basis. At the beginning of 2017 we will be launching an additional feature to our site to incorporate the demand for e-commerce. There are lots of things to be excited about this coming year!

Our circulation continues to grow and I am pleased to announce that this fall, CVLUX will be distributed in over 75 luxury resorts and hotels. For a complete list of our distribution locations visit www.cvlux.com. Donna and I are so happy that all of you have chosen to be part of our journey. Without the support of the community none of this would have ever been possible. Each day is a celebration for us and it warms my heart to look back and think that we’ve accomplished something that no one else in the Valley has ever done before. I am extremely pleased with this most recent edition of CVLUX. One of my favorite articles is our cover story (page 44) featuring the charming and talented Yolanda Hadid. This candid conversation brings a breath of fresh air to this edition. Yolanda was photographed by our dear friend, Jim Jordan, in conjunction with White Cross Productions. To see additional images from this stunning shoot go to our website. Finally, it is time for the Luxury Awards! This year we have assembled a list of all the businesses and individuals who are offering unparalleled service to the community. I encourage you to take the time to log on to our website. com and cast your vote. A portion of the proceeds will benefit the Saint Agnes Center for Women. Let’s make this year’s event one for the record books, and keep an eye on social media for all the latest Luxury Award news and updates. So take a little time, stop what you are doing and thumb through the pages of this edition; who knows what you might discover? Cheers,

ome of the hottest beauty products are from notable fashion designers. Even if the products are not those you use every day, the end result and packaging make it all worth the buy. For those who can’t afford designer fashion shoes, handbags, or a dress, it makes sense to turn to beauty products to feel fabulous. Some of the biggest iconic fashion designers have beauty brands, such as Burberry, Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, Dolce & Gabbana, Dior and Giorgio Armani, to name a few. The fashion industry and its fellow designers seem to have discovered that dabbling in beauty products will help to establish a successful consumer brand. CVLUX caught up with a few designers who exude grace and class in their beauty products.
Prada On the rack, their leather handbags, travel accessories, shoes and ready-towear apparel is modern and simple in design, while their fragrances are soft and playful. Les Infusions de Prada, Mimosa, joins the collection of Prada’s six other iconic scents: Iris, Iris Cèdre, Fleur d’Oranger, Amande, Eillet and Vétiver. Each Infusion is a poetic interpretation of a single, emblematic natural ingredient. Les Infusions de Prada fragrance bottles are represented by the institutional codes of Prada, the vintage flacons with the classic Prada heritage crest. Mimosa has the smell of summer in a bottle, with sweet floral accents.
Viktor & Rolf Viktor & Rolf is an Amsterdam-based company with 42 perfumes under their fashion house. Their newest fragrance, launching this September, BonBon Couture, is a fragrance and hair mist. The fragrance is a new adaptation of the caramel note; the latest eau de parfum from the designer duo is an opulent, intense, fashionforward interpretation of fragrance. The bottle is dusted to look like organza and satin duchesse, while the juice itself deepens its caramel base, layering mandarin, orange blossom and vanilla. Bonbon Hair Mist comes in a silky, frosted, 30 ml bottle reinterpreting the iconic Bonbon bow. Thanks to its innovative pump, it can be delicately sprayed on hair like a perfumed cloud, a delicious caress at any time of the day. Bring it with you, wherever, whenever.

For a full list of sponsors please visit www.nyxfaceawards.com We sat down with Kandee and asked her a few beauty questions for CVLUX. CVLUX: How were you influenced growing up? KJ: Oh, the good ol’ days! Back then, all we had as far as being influenced in the way that social media now influences others, was pretty much just TV, magazines or books!
CVLUX: What do you think is the biggest issue for women in the profession? KJ: I think women don’t get the same respect that a man does, but that just means we work harder, think smarter and really impress everyone; then they’re like, “Wow! Look what she did!” CVLUX: Which other female influencers do you admire and why? KJ: All of these girls are my friends and I have great admiration and love for them. I love Lilly Singh (iisuperwomanii on YouTube); she has a tireless work ethic and she’s humble, sweet, and hustles hard, from grueling tour schedules, to filming a documentary, to becoming friends with her hero, The Rock. I admire people that work hard and are kind and humble. I always say I barely sleep from all the work I do; then I’ll see Lilly is just as sleepless as me! Lilly and I are like spirit animals of each other. I also admire Colleen Ballinger (Miranda Sings on YouTube) because not only does she continue to film YouTube videos while on her Miranda tour, but she’s sweet, she’s built a brand and loves to make people happy. She’s worked with so many big names and has accomplished so much, it just makes me so proud and happy for her. Lindsey Stirling is another woman I have a lot of admiration for because not only is she adorable, a sweetie pie, and an incredible violinist, but she is always working to be an even more amazing violinist. That to me is a sign of true greatness, always striving to become even better! She’s an author and when I saw her book when I was walking through an airport one day, my heart just burst with joy from being so proud of her!
CVLUX: How has your background (makeup, styling, etc.) made you the influencer you are today? KJ: Well, I don’t think I would have started YouTube, had I not been a makeup artist. Since I was a makeup artist, when I saw Lauren Luke (panacea81 on YouTube) using YouTube to teach makeup, I thought, “This is brilliant! Now I can teach all the women who’ve said they wished I could teach them makeup right in their own homes!” There weren’t tutorials on how to contour your nose or apply false lashes or any of that, so I just shared all the tips, tricks and makeup basics that I thought everyone would love to know. I really have always loved inspiring, teaching and encouraging people, so I hope that comes across in my videos, whether I’m teaching how to get the perfect brows, look like a Barbie doll, make your own teeth whitening trays at home, or how to handle a bad day. I love when I hear people came for the makeup but left inspired.
Jenna Marbles is another woman I look up to because she is so real, kind, funny and thoughtful, and is just a truly humble and wonderful person. She became the most followed woman on YouTube, but her genuine spirit and kindness is something that you feel. She has made me laugh and encouraged both on YouTube and just in real life. Her success and fame has not changed her in any way; she’s real, she’s got a great balance of work and life, and I just love her.
CVLUX: Can you tell us about the process of launching your YouTube channel from concept to reality? KJ: Well, my first challenge was that I didn’t own any filming equipment. My grandparents (and may I repeat that, my grandparents) had a garage sale and no one bought their antiquated video camera, which still used tapes, not even a memory card. They asked if I wanted the old video camera and I said, “YEAH!” That camera, in all its squeaky, taping, twisting glory, was what I used for my first videos. And I just got really excited at the thought of teaching my makeup tips and tricks and I went full force. I’ve always had a really great work ethic and I’d upload 1 to 3 videos a day, every day. Then I started doing the makeup transformations like Jessica Rabbit, Edward Scissorhands, Snow White, the Queen of Hearts and people really loved those! I didn’t think too much about what I was doing; I just did it. If you overthink or wait for the perfect time to start anything, you’ll never do it. Once I get into something, I just go! Start where you’re at, with what you’ve got. And eventually, I got a video camera that didn’t squeak.
CVLUX: As the host of the NYX FACE Awards 2016, can you tell us more about the event? KJ: It is the world’s biggest makeup competition that draws people from all over the world to enter and compete to make it to the finals. It is a huge honor to be in the running and really showcases the contestants and can really draw attention to and grow their YouTube or Instagram channels to new levels of success.
CVLUX: What advice can you offer to women who want a career in your industry? KJ: Ask yourself why you want to do it. When your reason is beyond yourself, and when you want to create, entertain, teach, inspire, help or benefit others, that’s when what you’re doing is going to have the greatest meaning. And if it is in the YouTube, blogger or social media realm, always talk, write and speak as if you’re talking to your best friend. CVLUX: What is the most rewarding aspect of being a female influencer? KJ: Being able to reach people all over the world with hope and encouragement and to make them feel that they are not alone and loved. Getting emails saying, “you saved my life,” or, “you helped me through a battle with cancer," or, "the loss of a loved one.” There is no greater reward than hearing that.
36
cvlux.com @cv_luxury
CVLUX: How do you maintain a work/life balance? KJ: That’s really hard to find balance when the very platforms you use never stop; 24/7 there are ways to engage and ways to share your content all the time. That is something that I struggle with. So I have to really work hard to shut down, even though I have lists of things that need to get done or worked on, hundreds of emails that need me to look at them, or videos that need to be edited, all the time.
CVLUX: Why did you initially want to get involved with the NYX FACE Awards? KJ: I love NYX and have been a fan and friend of everyone at the NYX team for years. I’m honored to get to be a part of a competition this big, to help to inspire up-and-coming makeup artists and those who just love makeup, to see what they can do with makeup and to showcase their work in such a huge way. CVLUX: What makes the 2016 NYX FACE Awards different from other awards shows? KJ: It is the biggest makeup competition of its kind! There is no other makeup competition like it. It brings people from all over the internet, striving to be in the running and to see who is winning. Many of the contestants are self-taught but have incredible talents with makeup. To see what they do is really amazing. And to know that it’s the biggest award show of its kind makes it a real honor to be a part of. The NYX FACE Awards were held August 20th and the results are in! Laura Sanchez was named Beauty Vlogger of the Year for 2016.

beginnings AN INTERVIEW WITH YOLANDA HADID Features Editor Logan Guntzelman Photographed by Jim Jordan
Y
olanda Hadid is no stranger to the unexpected. The proud Netherlands native turned runway model, turned loving mother, turned reality TV star, turned Lyme disease advocate has worn so many hats, it’s certainly good that fashion modeling was one of them. Otherwise, how could she make wearing so many hats look so good? Born Yolanda van den Herik in Papendrecht, Netherlands, Yolanda credits her small European farm town upbringing for giving her the tools she needed to navigate the life she has now. “I am extremely thankful for my humble beginnings,” she says. “It was a much more simple life than my blessed California lifestyle.”

Yolanda’s young life was quaint, but not without hardships. “Unfortunately, my father died when I was seven years old and my mother raised us alone.” When thinking back on her childhood, instead of dwelling on tragedy, Yolanda chooses to focus on the positive relationship she built with her mother. “She gave me a strong foundation with unconditional love and discipline. She empowered me to have self-worth, strength, integrity and honor.” Even in her early days, Yolanda displayed the kind of boundless gratitude most practiced yogis struggle to find. As you’ll see, this is something Yolanda does a lot.

Yolanda dreamt of becoming a professional equestrian until a chance encounter at a fashion show changed the course of her life. Dutch designer, Frans Molenaar, asked the naturally-beautiful Yolanda to replace one of his models in a show—a show that Ford Models founder, Eileen Ford, just happened to be watching. You know Ford Models, the famous agency that brought us all supermodels like Twiggy and today represents talent like Bar Rafaeli? Yeah, that Eileen Ford. Most of us would be shaking in our boots (or heels) if asked to perform in such a high-stakes situation. But Yolanda’s grace and her admitted ignorance about the world of fashion allowed her to pass that first modeling test with flying colors. “I honestly had never seen a VOGUE magazine until I was sixteen … but when I was discovered I left Holland to model all over the world.” Yolanda had vastly different plans for her life, and suddenly new opportunities meant drastically readjusting. To some of us, that would be the most stressful situation as in a “let’s hope I’m modeling antiperspirant because I’m gonna need it to get through this” kind of thing. But not Ms. Hadid. She just went with it. “Life took a different turn,” she reflects. “Destiny took me to where I am today.” After years of posing and strutting her stuff around the world, Yolanda married real estate developer, Mohamed Hadid, and moved to sunny Santa Barbara. If Yolanda Hadid’s last name sounds familiar to you or your Instagram-obsessed teenagers, that’s no coincidence. Yolanda is mother to models Anwar, Gigi and Bella Hadid. Even though her children have ended up very much in the spotlight, Yolanda made sure that their early lives were as conventional as possible. “We lived a very private life on a horse ranch in Santa Barbara,” she remembers. “The majority and most defining years of my children’s childhoods were very normal, as it was focused on school and sports.” And she isn’t lying; Gigi became captain of her high school volleyball team and Bella had plans to become a professional equestrian. But then a little combination of destiny and genetics stepped in, bringing change— yet again—to the life of Yolanda and to the lives of her daughters. “Gigi and Bella moved to New York City and started their modeling careers, which really changed their visibility in the world.” Two young women moving to a big city after growing up on a secluded ranch? Some moms might not be so thrilled. But, as you can imagine, not Yolanda. Instead she says, “I love watching my children grow and thrive in their lives as they become who they desire to be.” And they certainly are becoming people that a lot of people would want to be. Gigi has appeared on the cover of VOGUE, walked the runway for designers like Versace and Chanel, and performed in music videos for DJ Calvin Harris and bestie, Taylor Swift. Bella could be spotted walking for Chanel and Givenchy at Paris Fashion week this year and posing for photoshoots by the likes of Marc Jacobs and designer, Karl Lagerfield. Maybe the reason Yolanda didn’t stress her daughter’s east coast move is that, much like she did in her own life, Yolanda chose to focus more on the tools she gave her children as opposed to worrying about the possible challenges they might encounter.
“The most important thing I like to remind them of is to always follow their intuition, stand strong in their shoes and remember who they were as a human being before the world told them who they should be.” At the same time that her daughters were coming into their own, Yolanda chose to add to her already successful career with a new role as a reality TV star, joining the cast of Bravo’s Real Housewives of Beverly Hills alongside her second husband, musician and producer, David Foster. While most reality shows are a series of fake arguments in front of a camera, Yolanda went through some pretty harrowing experiences on Real Housewives. She was documented going through the diagnosis and treatment of Lyme disease. “Chronic Lyme is a silent killer that slowly takes over every part of your body,” Yolanda says, adding that, “Uncovering the mystery of this disease was a long and hideous process.” Long, hideous, and caught on film. Fans of Yolanda’s show could watch as she saw over one hundred doctors and experimented with, as she puts it, “every western and holistic protocol available.” Yolanda’s sickness got so bad that in 2015 she had lost the ability to read, write, or even watch TV. But as you’ve probably realized, Yolanda is never one to reflect negatively without finding something for which to be grateful. “I am very lucky … for the phenomenal medical team that has guided me to eighty percent improvement in the past two years.” Not content with simply expressing gratitude, Yolanda Hadid has decided to do something about her battle with Lyme disease. “It would be easy to walk away from this journey and forget it ever happened, but I feel compelled to speak up and share.” So Yolanda wrote a book, adding the profession of author to her already impressive resume. “Plenty of treatments were a waste of money and time, most of which are not covered by health insurance … I hope my book will educate and shine light on the dark maze I had to travel to restore my health.” Set to be released in February of 2017, “Believe Me: My Battle With the Invisible Disability of Lyme Disease,” is Yolanda’s way of using her hardships to empower others. “I am a voice for those who can’t be heard. Millions of people around the world suffer from this disease without answers.” As you probably noticed, time and time again, reading this interview, Yolanda has the incredible ability to lean into change while also finding a way to be thankful for that change. Now that we’re barreling into fall, change is more apparent than ever. The days get shorter, the kids go back to school, and the weather changes (kind of). As we are confronted with all these changes, it’s pretty clear that we would do well to take a leaf out of Yolanda’s book. “The only thing constant in life is change,” Yolanda says, “so embrace it and relax.” Relax. The California lifestyle definitely rubbed off a little on this Dutch model and mother of three.

Wet Your Winter Whistle: Stocking Your Bar for the Colder Months As the air acquires a chill and the days get shorter, our home lives adapt to the cooler months. Out come the faux fur throws; we stock up on candles and cozy firewood; our dinners change from light al fresco meals to cozy home-cooked stews and roasts. Our liquor cravings change too—no longer do we long for fruit-infused margaritas or crisp gin cocktails; instead, we find ourselves reaching for all things autumn. Who doesn’t want to snuggle up with a rich red wine, nurse a smoky single malt, or indulge in a warm Toddy as the months get colder? Here’s my guide to stocking the ultimate bar for fall and winter. Rich, Spiced and Full-Bodied. Gone are the summer months of white spirits and light cocktails—winter is all about brown liquor and rich flavors. I always think it’s essential to add a Cognac to your winter bar. It’s classy, traditional and yet surprisingly unusual in homes today. There’s nothing better than sipping a snifter of Cognac, wrapped in a blanket under the stars. It’s also a great staple for some fantastic winter cocktails like Sidecars, Stingers or Brandy Alexanders! My other winter basic is whiskey. I love a great Rye, like Bulleit or Templeton. It’s perfectly wintery on its own, while being slightly spicier and edgier than a Bourbon. Plus it tastes amazing in classic autumn cocktails like Manhattans. One thing a lot of people forget for their winter bar is rum. I always add either a lightly-spiced or aged rum. It’s vital for your holiday eggnog or a cozy Hot Toddy, and can be used in a plethora of other exciting cocktails! ***Don’t forget to warm these up, too! The above liquors can transition you from
classic rocks cocktails in the crisp, cool autumn, to toasty warm fireside beverages through the cold winter. A Hot Toddy, some mulled wine, a rich Irish coffee … there’s nothing better than something heartwarming on a cold day!*** Fall Flavors. Who doesn’t love the relaxed, welcoming, memory-invoking flavors of fall and winter? Spiced apples, hot chocolate and pumpkin pie: they can all apply to your bar as well. Your mixers and cordials are where you can really have fun when stocking your seasonal bar. I have 3 or 4 liqueur essentials: Crème de Cacao (perfect for everything from Chocolate Martinis to Brandy Alexanders) and Godiva Chocolate Liqueur (it’s rich and chocolaty and so decadent it hurts), Kahlua (for all the wintery after dinner drinks and the perfect Espresso Martinis) and St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur (for spicing up your Champagne with a classic winter wonderland flavor). Holidays. When deciding on your go-to liquors, remember that Thanksgiving’s just around the corner and Christmas is slowly creeping up on you. If your holiday schedule is usually based on the theme “the more the merrier,” then you might want to go with a large amount of affordable staples. If you tend to be more low-key and celebrate with just close family and friends, then invest in some wonderful sippers that will foster conversation! Bubbles. This is a last-quarter essential for me. The colder months always bring with them cocktail parties, holidays and events, and bubbles are the perfect way to celebrate. Not only does Champagne fill the space left by all those light summery cocktails, it can also be used for fantastic wintery drinks like a traditional Champagne Cocktail or a French 75. Enjoy! Cozy Up: Embrace Fall 2016’s Favorite Fashions Luxe Texture. Nothing says autumn like rich, luxurious textures and this fall is no exception. Velvet and faux fur should be some of the most popular items in your wardrobe as it gets colder. Don’t stick to the classics either; the runways were teeming with statement faux fluffies in various colors and patterns. Chokers. Whether it’s a statement choker, a simple black velvet ribbon, or a silk scarf casually wrapped around your throat, high-neck adornments are peppering every collection this fall. Try it peeking out from beneath a button down shirt or let it be the center of attention paired with a chic off-the-shoulder top. Capelets & Embellished Gloves. These retro staples are a great way to add just a touch of pizzazz to a classic outfit. The perfect way to keep warm in the fall, capelets have made a major comeback. From bejeweled stunners to more structured additions to pantsuits, capelets can go with any outfit this all. Embellished gloves are another flashback we love — the blingier the better! Neutrals. As usual, this autumn is the perfect time to showcase your neutrals. Dark navy is keeping its top spot, especially in overcoats and layers — it’s impossible not to look chic! However, the pros are gravitating to an unusual but striking combo: tan and grey. Opt for lighter grey patterns like a pale dove pinstripe or plaid and pair it with a neutral tan in a decadent, soft fabric. Metallic Gold. Gold metallic accents (think: stitched embroidery, gold lamé, metallic lace) are hugely popular on dresses this season. Can’t find anything you like? Hand-stitch some glittering gold appliqués to the lapel of a blazer!

Caramelized Onion & Bacon Tart with Fresh Thyme Growing up in France, a caramelized onion tart was our goto lunch when we felt like something decadent. You don’t see these as much in the U.S. but trust me, once you’ve made it once, you’ll never go back. The sweet caramelized onions combined with a flaky, buttery crust, salty bacon, fresh thyme and bubbling Gruyère cheese … there’s nothing better! Pair this with a simple green salad and a glass of wine —it’ll soon become your go-to for a cozy fall meal! Ingredients 1 sheet puffed pastry 8 bacon slices, roughly chopped 1 tsp brown sugar 2-3 large onions, sliced thinly into ½ rounds 1 large egg ¼ cup heavy cream ½ cup sour cream 1 tsp salt 1 tsp ground black pepper ½ tsp garlic salt 1 tbsp butter, softened 1 cup Gruyère cheese, grated 1 tbsp goat cheese 6 thyme sprigs Preparation 1. Preheat oven to 425°F. 2. Sauté the bacon in a large skillet over mediumhigh heat until crisp. Spoon out the bacon and put it on a paper-towel lined plate. 3. Drain all but 1 tablespoon of the bacon fat from the skillet. Add the onions to the bacon fat along with the leaves from 2 of the thyme sprigs, and sauté over medium heat until onions are very tender and slightly brown, about 15 minutes. 4. Add the brown sugar and cook for another 3-5 minutes until lightly brown and soft. The aim is for your onions to be golden but not dark. 5. Let the onions and bacon cool. 6. Thaw out the puffed pastry and roll it into a square large enough to cover your pie dish. 7. Butter and flour your pie dish and line it with the puffed pastry. Fill with pie weights or dried beans. Bake for 13-15 mins until the edges are lightly golden. Remove from oven, remove weights/ beans, and let cool slightly. 8. Meanwhile, whisk the egg with the sour cream, heavy cream, salt, pepper, and garlic salt in large bowl. Add in the goat cheese, Gruyère (reserving about a tablespoon), leaves from 2 sprigs of thyme and softened butter and mix until smooth. 9. Mix your onions and bacon together and pour ½ of it into the pie. 10. Top with ½ the cheese mixture, then repeat with another layer of bacon and onion, then another layer of cheese mixture. 11. Sprinkle the remaining Gruyère over the top and some more black pepper. 12. Bake for 30-40 minutes until the onion custard is set (a little wiggle is ok) and the crust is dark golden brown. 13. Remove and let rest for 10 minutes to finish setting. 14. Garnish with the remainder of the thyme leaves and some more black pepper. 15. Enjoy warm!

Wild Mushroom & Goat Cheese Crostini These are such a great appetizer and can be made very easily. The wild mushrooms and pine nuts combine for an earthy, woody taste, complemented so nicely by the sweet, creamy goat cheese. I also love them as an open-faced sandwich for lunch, alongside a butter lettuce salad. Ingredients 3 cups wild mushrooms, cleaned and cut into chunks ¼ cup red wine 2 Tbsp salted butter (in 8 pieces) Garlic salt Salt and pepper to taste French or rustic bread, sliced 1 package creamy goat cheese 6 sprigs of fresh thyme, leaves removed Pine nuts to garnish Preparation 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. An Entertaining Essential: Sumptuous Cheese Boards One of the best staples for entertaining in the fall is a killer cheese board. Cheese plates are such an easy way to get creative and make a display that is not only delicious, but visually stunning, as well. They’re perfect for a light lunch as the weather gets cooler, a little nibble during a cocktail party, or a late night around the fire. Here are some fun ideas to get you started. Cheeses Opt for cheeses with fabulous colors or something interesting about them. Bright yellow cheddar goes perfectly next to a delicious truffle goat cheese, a cheese stuffed with cranberries, or a bright blue-veined Gorgonzola. Try different textures for a wellrounded platter: creamy bries, hard Gruyères and crumbly goat cheeses. Crackers There are some gorgeous and decadent crackers out there, so look around for something you love. We love crackers that have nuts and dried fruits pressed into them —the perfect, decadent little treat to pair with your cheese.
62
cvlux.com @cv_luxury
Meat Thinly sliced prosciuttos, delicious spicy salamis and freshly sliced country ham are all the perfect way to make your cheese board more substantial if you’re having it as a main part of your meal. Layer them in loose, sexy piles for a fabulous, rustic effect. Fruit & Sides There are so many fruits that pair perfectly with meats and cheeses and they taste light and fresh on a board that’s usually quite heavy and rich. Try fresh pears, apples, grapes, figs, raspberries and strawberries, and couple them with some savory options like marinated olives!
Preheat oven to 400˚. In a baking dish, add the mushrooms, garlic salt to taste, wine, leaves from 2 sprigs of thyme and mix to combine. Top the mushrooms with 6 pieces of butter. Roast mushrooms in oven for 20 minutes, or until the mushrooms soften. Remove from oven. On a baking sheet, lay out the bread slices and brush with remaining butter. Bake for 5-6 minutes until crunchy. Spread slices with goat cheese. Spoon mushroom mixture over bread and top with remaining thyme and salt and pepper. Garnish with pine nuts.

A Taste of Bayou by Michelle Peranich
B
radley Bayou is multi-disciplinary designer whose career spans fashion, fine art and interiors. Since establishing Bradley Bayou Design in 2010, an interior design and development firm based in Los Angeles and New York City, he has developed a portfolio that has garnered acclaim from publications including Architectural Digest, The Wall Street Journal, Elle Décor and Dwell. The Bayou House is a masterful, contemporary architectural achievement sited prominently in the “Bird Streets” of Los Angeles, CA. It is a ground-up new construction designed by Bradley Bayou. Every detail of this property was created using Bradley’s World Modern aesthetic, sophisticated materials and unparalleled craftsmanship. I took Bradley’s advice when creating a dinner party for one of his clients in his newlybuilt, modern home. Bradley believes that you “create a figure that looks beautifully proportioned and that gets attention in all the right places.” In this case, less was more. For the table design I kept to the surrounding color palette. I found metal chairs with a burlap pad, which were the perfect choice; it turns out Bradley loves burlap! It’s always great to brand the client within an event. The color of the logo was the perfect opportunity: a deep, crimson red, which was a great pop of color for floral arrangements. They noticed. I created the menu the same way: a formed, chopped salad stood still, but showed texture and depth. The dessert was a warm chocolate truffle cake with raspberry coulis, which reinforced the trademark splash of color. When planning an event, I’m always searching for the elements that will capture the look and feel of my client because that is the Art of Entertaining!

MOUNTAIN MODERN JAY JEFFERS CONTINUES TO REDEFINE RUSTIC WITH THIS MODERN VERSION OF MOUNTAIN DESIGN
MIKE RAGAN INTERIOR DESIGN BY JAY JEFFERS WRITTEN BY
PHOTOGRAPHY BY ARCHITECTURE BY
MATTHEW MILLMAN RYAN GROUP ARCHITECTS
A
-list San Fransisco based Interior Designer, Jay Jeffers, was given the task to create a home that was move-in-ready for his clients, a busy Bay Area couple with three kids. They love getting away to the mountains throughout the year and wanted a vacation home that could easily entertain family and friends. Located in a beautiful spot in Martis Camp, the home is nestled among pine trees with a view of the golf course. Jay’s favorite room in the house is the Great Room with soaring ceilings, ample dining space and a large living area, all centered on a terrific steel fireplace and a wellappointed kitchen. It all flows easily, and the large glass doors open fully to include the outdoor living space with an outdoor grill and beautiful view of the Carson Range in the distance. The Great Room draws on a classic Tahoe palette with blue, greys, and a hint of red in the dining chairs. Vintage French leather lounge chairs, concrete-top coffee tables, and an ebonized oak dining table update the classic colors to insure the “collected” feel Jay loves. His biggest challenge? “Leaving after we were finished! These were such fun clients; the hardest part was saying good-bye.”
The furnishings are clean, simple and a chic neutural backdrop to the clients’ fantastic art collection.
Embracing Autumn
by Mike Ragan
Welcome to the cozy, colorful days of fall by warming up your surroundings. Tones of amber, spruce, cinnamon and curry are colors that the soul instantly recognizes as familiarly comfortable. This is the season of layers and textures, whether outside with leaves, pinecones, sweaters and scarves or inside with fireplaces, candles, lush throws and intimate family dinners. It is so important to take a deep breath after the activity of summer and create a space that is a haven for you and your guests to share during the holidays and festivities to come.
