have always enjoyed this time of year. I’m not sure what it is about the holiday season.

Maybe it’s the change in weather, the festive decorations, or anticipation of the inevitable indulgence in retail therapy and gift-giving. Whatever it is, each year seems to bring its own special nuances and memorable experiences.

Within this issue we tried to capture the spirit and unique energy of the 2017 holiday season. One of my favorite articles can be found on page 67. Once again our Lifestyle Editor, Michelle Peranich, gives us a glimpse of what it takes to make a memorable holiday soirée that you won’t want to miss. Included in this spread is a plethora of her favorite things, to make your season that much more magical. Featured on the cover of this edition is the multi-talented, Erika Girardi, from the hit Bravo show The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills. Erika was a delight to work with on set. ARTofFREEDOM 2017 Made For Them held its annual ARTofFREEDOM event on September 30th to raise awareness and resources supporting programs and services for survivors of human trafficking. Hosted by Fresno Chief of Police, Jerry Dyer, and award-winning news anchor, Liz Harrison, this annual event allowed participants to hear survivors' stories, better understand the realities of law enforcement, support Made For Them by shopping their clothing line and survivor-made products, participate in silent, dessert and live auctions and enjoy live music. The night ended with an engaging, hands-on art experience.

“PRETTY BUSY” IS HOW ERIKA GIRARDI— KNOWN TO MOST OF THE WORLD AS HER ALTER EGO, ERIKA JAYNE—WOULD DESCRIBE HER LIFE, BUT THE 46-YEAR-OLD WOULD ALSO SAY SHE IS LIVING A DREAM THAT SHE DOESN’T TAKE FOR GRANTED. “I always grew up in the arts, but I never thought I’d be on reality television and I didn’t think it was possible for a woman of 46 years to gain this level of success in an industry that’s very youth driven,” Girardi explains to me. “So to be identified as ‘pop culture’ now, which is what Housewives is … no, I never thought it was the way it would come about. I could not have foreseen it.”

Housewives, of course, is the Bravo reality show, The Real Housewives, a franchise that documents the lives of several wealthy housewives living throughout the United States. In 2015, the show’s sixth season, Girardi joined the Beverly Hills edition and quickly became a household name, thanks to her boisterous, eccentric and over-the-top personality. And like most reality shows, being thrust into the spotlight so quickly was a learning curve.

“I always say that the most important thing you need to do when you’re on a Housewives show is remember everything you said, because you’ll be called on it,” says Girardi. “Whether it’s on-camera, offcamera … it’s always going to get back to whoever, so you need to be very clear about the conversations you’re having and the words you’re using. I think that Housewives has taught me a lot about myself.”

Erika goes on to explain that being on the show has revealed a new level of strength and tenacity in herself. “It’s not for everyone,” she tells me. “The reality about reality television is that you’re seeing a certain part of people’s lives, but there’s also part of the cast members' lives that you don’t see … there’s just not enough time.”

And as Girardi tells it, though the average viewer only sees part of their lives, there’s a behind-the-scenes connection between the cast members.

“All of the cast members are bonded by this unique experience of sharing our lives on television, so it is something that brings us all together. We all speak a certain language only we understand. In some ways, we all look out for each other and help each other. We share a special bond.”

"Whatever you are, there’s always the polar opposite living inside. We’re not all the same. It’s like a social chameleon in a way … it’s just mine is on steroids."

Onscreen, she’s Erika Jayne: loud, boisterous and fun. Off-screen, however, she’s Erika Girardi: grounded mom to son, Tommy, and wife to husband, Tom Girardi, who she met while she was a cocktail waitress.

“Erika Jayne is just that: a performance persona,” Girardi explains. “I go to work as Erika Jayne and have a great time. My work is a lot of fun, but it’s also a lot of stress, physically and creatively. You have to work double hard to keep it going. But here’s the thing: I don’t think doctors come home as doctors. And I’m not walking around as my on-stage persona in my hair and in my makeup; I’m definitely leaving Erika Jayne in her space that she lives in.”

That space is everywhere the camera is, but as Girardi points out, “I don’t need to be her 24 hours a day. I love being able to embody that persona, and I also love putting her to bed because that’s a lot of energy.

I don’t want to work that hard all the time. I want to be with my family, with my friends, with those who love me. Reality is talking with my son, walking my dog, being with my friends and being with people that I love and care about.”

While Girardi coyly tells me that “Erika Jayne is a fantasy come to life,” that term could be used to describe the trajectory of her own life.

Born in Atlanta, Georgia, she attended a performing arts high school and left home at 18, moving to New York with the hope of making it as a singer and actress. Life didn’t quite work out the way she hoped in her 20s, and after two years of marriage, a divorce and a son, she moved to Los Angeles, where she met her current husband, Tom—32 years older, and a famed client attorney. Celebrity soon followed in the form of music (she made her Billboard debut in 2007 with her single, “Rollercoaster”) and, of course, reality television. It’s not the way she would have planned out her life, but she likes it that way.

“I think that we have to relieve ourselves of age,” she says. “People have individual journeys. It’s very easy to go to school, get a job and do the right thing, and that’s a path maybe most people take. But just because yours is different doesn’t mean you’re not going to end up in the same place, and you’re not going to be richer for it. And I wouldn’t change anything about my journey. It’s definitely different than others, but I’d much rather enjoy this level of success now than … in my 20s.”

When I press her about how being older has played a role in adapting to fame, she responds with both confidence and pride. “I’m much more appreciative, I understand it and I know how to take advantage of it,” she says. “So I think for me, everything has turned out beautifully.

And who’s to say that you blossom in your 20s? I feel really f***ing fabulous at 46, and I think people have a lot of worth, a lot of strength, a lot of knowledge and a lot to give in their 40s.”

Erika’s positive attitude is a big piece of this. She tells me that she believes that if you don’t wake up each day, grateful and looking forward to what you have going on, your future is going to look “bleak.”

“I don’t care how old I am, I have a lot of experience and I have a lot to offer. But that’s me, and that’s how I live my life,” she adds.

So far, Girardi is living up to her own mantra, and not just as a reality television star. Other projects include an appearance on Dancing with the Stars, as well as a musical career, which has garnered its own attention for its extravagant videos and titles.

“You’re supposed to have a good time with it,” Girardi explains of her music. “I’m not making political statements. That’s really what my music is about. I can only talk, sing and write about what I am, and those are the things that are personal to me—the people in my life and the personal experiences I have,” she says. “And it’s my job to reflect that back out, and also make it entertaining and on a level that everyone can identify with.”

Never one to sit on the sidelines, she’s currently writing new music and she tells me an EP will be out next year. And in January of 2018, she’ll release a book under her alter ego’s name, called Pretty Mess, the same title as her 2009 debut album. The book is a tell-all memoir that recounts her beginnings as a performer and details her journey to stardom and fame.

Despite Girardi telling me “it’s very busy over here,” it’s safe to say that neither she or Erika Jayne are going anywhere anytime soon.

“One can’t exist without the other,” she explains. “They kind of go hand in hand, and that’s why I say there’s a little Erika Jayne in everyone; she’s just trying to get out. Whatever you are, there’s always the polar opposite living inside. We’re not all the same. It’s like a social chameleon in a way … it’s just mine is on steroids.”

Erika recounts a story about meeting soap star, Susan Lucci, who played Erica Kane on the long-running ABC soap opera, All My Children, and how Lucci told her, “there’s a bit of Erica Kane in every woman.” It’s exactly the mindset that Girardi takes when she thinks about her two different personas.

Erika Jayne never quite appeared during our conversation, but it was easy to find hints of her in Girardi’s responses. So it’s no surprise that when I asked who Erika is (Jayne or Girardi) “in five words or less,” Girardi had no problem describing herself. “I’m fun, I’m loud, I’m snappy, I’m compassionate and I’m tenacious,” she answers.

Asked about her ride to success, she becomes more somber and reflective.

“I don’t think anyone in any business can succeed alone,” she tells me. “A team is most important, and fortunately for me, my team is the closest people to me besides my family, besides my mother, my husband and my son. I can’t do it without them. They know that and I tell them every day.”

It’s clear that Erika doesn’t take the success she is enjoying for granted, either, and that she recognizes that she’ll look back at this part of her life as “an incredible journey.”

“What’s happening right now is once in a lifetime, and it would be stupid of me not to acknowledge how special it is,” she tells me. “This is what it’s all about.”

Or, in the words of Erika Jayne: “Next year’s going to be utter, fabulous chaos.”

invited a group of Valley women to an invitation-only, afternoon Shake + Stir, which for this issue, was held in a private dining room at Ruth’s Chris Steak House in the River Park Shopping Center in Fresno. The group, which included Karen McCaffrey, Carol DeFendis, Rema Koligian, Cortney Snapp, Kathy Stypula, Linda Penner and Donna Kaczmarski, sampled a delicious variety of appetizers, cocktails and desserts, personally selected and presented by the Ruth’s Chris Steak House sales and marketing manager, Haley Wagner.

Donna greeted each of the invitees in the bar, which is just steps from the front door of Ruth’s Chris Steak House. As each member of the group arrived, bartender, Brandon Cobarrubias, was busily hand-squeezing dozens of lemons, limes, oranges and grapefruit, in preparation for creating the fresh-squeezed juices for the afternoon’s cocktails, filling the air with a delicate citrus aroma.

Haley ushered the women into a private dining room and refilled their glasses of champagne. The room was quietly elegant with a warm, cozy feel, perfect for the Shake + Stir group. Everyone remarked on the exquisite floral centerpiece created by Mariah Walton of Simply Flowers. Tangerine orchids, blood red tulips and cabbage-hued hydrangea were artfully arranged in a round mercury glass bowl.

Fittingly, the first Ruth’s Chris appetizer the group tasted was the mouth-watering Steak Sandwich, a sliced filet prepared with Béarnaise sauce, served with lettuce, tomato and onion on freshlytoasted garlic bread. Haley explained that though Ruth’s Chris Steak House is known for their “perfect steak,” their menu is bursting with something to please every palate; they serve everything from chicken to seafood and even offer lighter vegetarian options.

The first cocktail the group sampled was the Ruby Red Greyhound, a concoction consisting of a Belvedere pink grapefruit vodka, StGermain elderflower-flavored liqueur and (literally!) just-squeezed ruby red grapefruit and lime juices (Donna’s favorite of the cocktails offered that afternoon!).

The next appetizer, Crab Beignet, is a brand-new menu item, and proved to be more than one of the women’s favorite. It consisted of Jumbo Lump crab meat, fresh jalapeño, cream cheese and herbs, and was fried to a golden brown and drizzled with spicy cream sauce, topped with green onion and served on a bed of cucumber salad.

“The crab had a smooth flavor with a pop of spice, and paired perfectly with my buttery Chardonnay,” said Carol about the Crab Beignet, and Rema added that that fresh jalapeño was what made the dish stand out. Linda said that if she had to pick a favorite, it would be the crab.

Donna asked the women to introduce themselves and tell the group a little bit about who they each are while they enjoyed Ruth’s Chris’ offerings. Introductions led naturally into conversation about everything from careers to motherhood, but no one could help noticing that both Carol and Karen’s eyes lit up when they talked about their grandchildren.

As the group continued to talk, Haley presented the next cocktail and appetizer, a Blueberry Mojito, followed closely by the Spicy Shrimp. Cruzan aged light rum, fresh lime juice, simple syrup, muddled blueberries and fresh mint leaves were combined to make the slightly tart but refreshing Blueberry Mojito, which was beautifully garnished with fresh blueberries. The succulent shrimp, lightly fried and tossed in a spicy cream sauce, and served with a tangy cucumber salad, was Cortney’s favorite.

“The pairing of the zestiness of the shrimp with the drinks helps you forget the woes of the day,” she said, “and after a long day of work, this is a great place to meet in a centralized location.” Linda agreed, calling Ruth’s Chris Steak House “the best happy hour in Fresno.”

The last appetizer, Seared Ahi-Tuna (Kathy’s favorite), was seasoned with blackening spice, seared, sliced and perfectly complemented by a spirited sauce. “I loved the spicy mustard sauce. It made my taste buds dance!” Kathy raved.

The Blackberry Sidecar, a combination of Rémy Martin VSOP cognac, Cointreau, fresh lemon juice, Fee Brothers plum bitters and muddled blackberries was the perfect final cocktail and an excellent transition into the unexpected dessert variety that Haley offered the group.

The group sampled a decadent crème brûlée topped with fresh berries, a rich cheesecake and the “Chocolate Duo,” which consisted of a molten chocolate lava cake with a Belgian chocolate center and a cup of chocolate mousse topped with fresh whipped cream on the side. All the guests agreed that every one of the desserts they sampled was incredible, though Rema called the cheesecake “divine.”

Donna said, “It's the best cheesecake in Fresno.”

While the women exchanged business cards and prepared to leave, Donna put each woman’s name on a slip of paper in a bowl; Karen’s name was drawn as the lucky recipient of the autumn-themed floral arrangement.

There is no better time to indulge in “luxury” food and beverages than during the holidays. I’ve chosen my favorite fine food, what drinks to pair them with and how to choose the best quality of each to offer and impress your guests.

T

ruffles are one of the most expensive and highlyprized foods in the world, but it is in Piedmont, Italy that we find the king of all truffles, the White of Alba. This winter white truffle has a far more intense aromatic profile than the summer white truffle. The Alba may be the king of all truffles, but due to their high cost, it’s challenging to be as luxurious and generous with your portions.

That’s why you might choose black truffles such as French Périgord or Australian Manjimup truffles, which can be enjoyed in relatively greater abundance relative to cost.

Showcase black truffles on a simple pasta, pizza or potato dish for a light country-style. Versatile and incredibly aromatic, these expensive mushrooms are at their best when paired with equally earthy wines such as old white Burgundy, old champagne, old red Burgundy or old Nebbiolo from Piedmont, which all work brilliantly. Detect a theme here? Yes,“old” is very much the key when thinking about wine and truffles.

Caviar has always been the delicacy of aristocrats and sophisticated gourmands. There are more than 400 species of sturgeon in the world, but only three of them—Beluga, Oscierte and Sevruga—are used to obtain caviar. When it comes to taste, higher grade caviar will feature a flavor with more depth and strength. It will also have a firmer texture and larger eggs for a bolder mouthfeel. Higher grades of caviar are typically lighter in color.

There is no “better” or “worse” caviar; it’s all a matter of personal preference. Some caviars have a more robust “taste of the sea,” however, such as Siberian or Shassetra caviars.

Others have a milder, nuttier flavor, especially Ossetra and Transmontanus. If in doubt, choose a well-known, high-quality brand and make sure it is well-chilled.

A few things to remember when shopping for caviar: paying more doesn’t guarantee good quality, don’t be afraid to start from the low end, buy enough and most importantly, eat it fast.

Oysters are another one of the world’s ultimate “luxury” foods. There is no more intimate encounter with the sea than eating a raw oyster. Just as soil gives wine its own unique flavor, subtle differences in waters and farming techniques give oysters a “merroir” of their own. What holiday party would be complete without a huge platter of these briny delicacies on the half-shell, along with lemon wedges and tiny bowls of mignonette? Wines that are brisk and refreshing are typically great with oysters. I suggest Muscadet, Fino sherry, chablis, Sancerre, dry Tokaji or champagne.

Contrary to what you might think, the best way to get fresh, high-quality oysters is to order them directly from the growers. They’ll FedEx them to you overnight or second-day delivery. This way you’ll know they’ll be fresh and a maximum of three days out of the water.

Oyster connoisseurs have their own lingo. Here’s a quick cheat sheet to brush up on and use the next time you visit the raw bar: Brine: simply put, an oyster’s saltiness.

Creaminess: Oysters gain a more buttery or creamy taste as they approach spawning in the summer.

Crispness: Cold waters slow down an oyster’s metabolism, leading to crisper, sweeter bivalves. As waters warm down the coast, oysters become meatier and brinier.

Finish: Kumamoto oysters from California and Washington, for example, leave a faint taste of honeydew melon on the tongue. Olympia oysters on the West Coast are slightly smoky, metallic or coppery.

Liquor: This refers to the delicious natural juices inside the shell, the essence of the sea. A true oyster connoisseur always slurps the liquor with the animal itself.

Merroir (pronounced “mare-wáh”): This refers to the flavors found in an oyster due to the particular waters and conditions in which it grew.

Naked: Some may need to dip their oysters in cocktail or mignonette sauce, but the purists will either use a squeeze of lemon, or prefer it “naked,” with nothing accompanying it at all.

The oyster world may seem overwhelming, but there are only five species of oysters in the world, and it’s easy to tell one from another. Here’s how: 1. ATLANTIC Smooth shell ridges, uniform in color and tear-drop in shape. Generally crisper, brinier and more savory (not sweet) finish.

2. PACIFIC Fluted, pointed shells that are usually rough and jagged. They’re creamy and finish with fruit or vegetal flavors.

3. KUMAMOTO Small and deep, like a little cup. Everyone loves them.

4. OLYMPIAS Tiny … even smaller than Kumamotos, and more shallow. They have a bit of a coppery flavor.

5. BELONS Sharp, intense, metallic flavor reminiscent of anchovies that some people don’t like, and like most things that are weird and rare, they are costly. This oyster's flavor tends to linger.

Jamón Ibérico is the jewel in the crown of Spanish cuisine. It is the ultimate cured ham, with a decadently rich, nutty flavor that evokes the countryside of Spain. Ibérico ham comes from an ancient breed of pig found only on the Iberian Peninsula and are known as Cerdo Ibérico, or “Pata Negra.” This exceptional ham is cured for up to four years, resulting in an intense flavor with a unique note of sweetness. For the highest quality jamón, look for the black label: this signifies the ham is 100% “Ibérico de Bellota,” which means the meat comes from a pure-bred, Iberian pig fed only with acorns.

J

ude Lanfranco came in with a big bang on New Year’s Day, 1954, to her parents, Dolores and Harold Landon. This Capricorn baby knew exactly what she wanted to get out of life from early on, making goals she has worked tirelessly to attain. If you know Jude Lanfranco, owner/designer of Jude’s Fantasy Land in Northwest Fresno, you know there is definitely something special about her. She is fun, believes in big ideas and is extremely creative.

Jude met her future husband, Eddie Lanfranco, when her brother invited her to make her famous potato salad and go hang gliding with him and a friend (Eddie), and the rest is history. Jude and Eddie Lanfranco married in 1975 and together raised three children. For many years, Jude was a busy mom, raising her children, cooking, going to soccer, football and baseball games, master gardening and all the while, enjoying the holidays with her family and friends.

Today, their son, Brad, is a politically-active professional who owns “It’s a Grind,” a coffee shop in Castaic, California, their daughter, Angelia, is a pediatric nurse/photographer and their son, Anthony, is a pulmonologist.

Since childhood, Jude has had a love for Christmas and the warm feelings this time of year brings. As an adult, she discovered a passion for design and décor, which is evident in every space she inhabits.

When it comes to the holidays, Jude makes sure that you can feel the warmth of fall and the spirit of Christmas in every room in the house. While living in their custom home in Shaver Lake, Jude was often referred to as “Mrs. Claus,” and for good reason. From decorating the town to hosting formal gatherings and casual get-togethers, Jude always paid special attention to every detail: wreaths on every door, beautiful place settings and coordinating serving pieces, fingertip towels, gifts wrapped in gorgeous paper and exquisite bows, and the aroma of smelling soaps in the powder rooms.

Jude brought her talents and passions with her when she and Eddie moved back to Fresno to care for her mother. She opened Jude’s Fantasy Land in August of 2012 at West and Bullard Avenue in Fresno’s Pavilion West Shopping Center, where her trademark attention to detail and ability to create warm, welcoming spaces make this store so unique.

Her inspiration? She loves bringing joy into others’ lives and smiles to their faces. She also says she admires the late Walt Disney, who inspired her philosophy that, “if you can dream it, you can do it.” It was after years of dreaming and some major encouragement from Eddie and her dearest friend for over 30 years, Maggie Kanawyer, that Jude opened the store. “Stop talking and start doing,” they both said, and that’s exactly what she did.

Jude hasn’t stopped dreaming, either. What started out as Fantasy Land has grown into a fine gift, home décor and design store for all seasons and all occasions. The store has recently expanded, adding 2,000 square feet into the neighboring space, which will create even more room for a growing custom floral design center, a bridal department, unique home décor, decorating and design assistance, event planning and one-of-a-kind fine gifts.

When you enter Jude’s Fantasy Land, you walk into another world where you will always be greeted with a warm welcome and a smiling face. Jude and her staff will help you with whatever your needs are. Whether it’s selecting that perfect something for a special occasion, choosing a unique gift or even finding something to splurge on for yourself, she will have it for you! Currently Jude’s biggest supporter, Eddie, works at B&L Mechanical, a design, building and mechanical business. Both Jude and Eddie have been very involved in the community through organizations such as Hinds Hospice, St. Agnes Medical Center, Fresno Rescue Mission and Terry’s House at Community Regional Medical Center, just to name a few.

When Jude isn’t creating magic at the store, you can find her working out five days a week at Synergy or traveling somewhere along the coast or to Mexico with Eddie, indulging in delectable foods and divine desserts. After all, life is not just about moderation and balance, but also about giving people the “wow factor” she is so well-known for.

MY HAPPIEST PROFESSIONAL MOMENT This year in March of 2017, in Honolulu, Hawaii at the Four Seasons. It was a magical place. My husband and I once again made President’s Club and I was so happy to see him on stage, accepting our award. I was truly proud, especially because we earned the award even though I was pregnant with my son for most of 2016, and I knew how hard we had to work to get there.

MY BEST ADVICE Work with a reputable lender. You really want someone who is going to take their job seriously and give you the best advice possible. All too often, I have seen a client disappointed after being misguided by a less than honest loan officer and subsequently losing out on a purchase. It is truly important to know exactly what you qualify for before you go house shopping. That way, there are no surprises and you will be able to successfully obtain the house you really want.

HOW I WOULD SPEND EXTRA TIME IN A DAY This is easy. It would most definitely be with my son, Giovanni Maximo Delgado, taking him to the park and the zoo. He is a year old and I am amazed by him every day. He is truly a blessing.
