Finding Your

CORE

A Fresh Introduction for Newcomers & Returners to Pilates Health & Fitness Contributor Audrey Barrington Photographer Danielle Lacey

In a wellness world bursting with trends, Pilates remains timeless. Equal parts elegant and intentional, it’s the kind of movement practice that meets you exactly where you are—whether you’re brand new, easing back in after a hiatus, or simply craving something more mindful than your standard fitness routine. Today’s Pilates blends classical foundations with modern technique, making it more approachable, more sculpting, and more restorative than ever. If you’ve been curious about starting—or restarting—Pilates, consider this your invitation.

Pilates Then & Now

Pilates traces its origins to the early 20th century through the work of Joseph Pilates, a German-born innovator who believed that true health came from uniting the mind and body through intentional movement. Originally called “Contrology,” his method was developed during World War I, where he used breathwork, precise muscle engagement, and rehabilitative exercises to help improve strength and mobility in injured soldiers. After immigrating to New York in the 1920s, Joseph and his wife Clara opened their iconic studio near the dance community, where dancers and athletes embraced the method for its ability to build deep core strength, refine alignment, and prevent injury. Over time, the practice evolved beyond its rehabilitative roots into the dynamic and mindful movement system we know today—one that continues to honor Joseph’s foundational principles of control, concentration, and purposeful breath.

The Essence of Pilates

At its core, Pilates is the art of controlled movement. Rather than chasing exhaustion or speed, Pilates focuses on alignment, breath, balance, and deep strength. The result? A body that moves with intention and a mind that feels more centered. Sessions are designed to leave you both energized and grounded—elongated through the spine, rooted through the core, and more aware of how your body carries you through everyday life. Intention and presence fundamentally guide Pilates’ core practice, believes Stephanie Lacefield, owner of CORE. Pilates studio in Clovis, California.“Our classes are unique to the individual clients in real time,” she explains while acknowledging that even with group classes, teachers must recognize that everyone has individual needs. “We realize the importance to meet each client where they are. Challenging them and encouraging them along the way while keeping the foundation of Joseph Pilates method present in each class.”

Pilates’ Modern Renaissance

Pilates has found its place again—this time not as a trend, but as a lifestyle. It has become the go-to movement for those seeking longevity and mindful strength.

Low-Impact, High-Yield

It’s perfect for beginners and “it’s-been-awhile” returners. The low-impact nature of Pilates makes it accessible for those rebuilding strength, recovering from inactivity, or simply seeking a gentler reentry into movement.

Universally Flattering

The functional, flattering results make it ideal for most every body type. Because Pilates trains the deep stabilizing muscles, you’re not just getting stronger—you’re moving better, standing taller, and carrying yourself with more ease.

Focused on Quiet Focus

This is a fitness routine that embraces the luxury of quiet focus. Unlike high-intensity workouts, Pilates invites presence. It’s a rare wellness moment that feels both indulgent and restorative. Many people arrive to Pilates as beginners or return after years away. When it comes to people reconnecting with their bodies, “We want them to allow themselves to be beginners,” Stephanie encourages. “We offer a layering approach, which allows all clients at all levels to focus on their strengths not their weaknesses, allowing faster progression.”

What Today’s Pilates Looks Like

While the classical method remains the foundation, modern studios have elevated the practice with contemporary elements that enhance—not overshadow—the original work.

Layered, Intuitive Instruction

Classes now often include “layers,” offering variations so every student—from brand-new to seasoned—can work at their level with confidence.

Thoughtful Fusion Formats

Expect sculpting sequences enhanced by props such as light weights, resistance bands, or balance tools. These additions reflect today’s desire for strength, endurance, and full-body engagement.

Core & Breath as the Anchors

Let Curiosity Guide You

“We connect clients to their bodies, mind and body,” Stephanie explains. “The foundation and principles of Pilates are present throughout our entire class and is the most important at CORE. We work the body from the inside out. Modern day or contemporary Pilates should still represent control, concentration, centering, precision, breath, and flow. It should not just be about aesthetics and trends—it is mindful movement.”

Pilates is often described as a practice that evolves with you. Hence, it is vital to honor the changes, seasons, and stages each body moves through. Stephanie encourages students “To listen. To be intentional. To be consistent. Throughout every season, our bodies have strength. The level of that strength may vary season to season but if you are intentional and consistent it makes it easier to stay committed. You have one body; you should direct your energy towards nourishing it both inside and out.”

You’ll see more emphasis on opening the body, improving range of motion, and supporting long-term joint health.

Some studios incorporate gentle infrared heat to deepen flexibility and elevate the experience into something spa-like and indulgent.

No matter how modern the class becomes, the essence remains: purposeful breath and a deeply engaged center.

Returning—or Beginning—with Confidence

Whether your last Pilates class was last week or last decade, the re-entry is simple and elegant, inviting you to return at your own pace with a sense of ease, grace, and renewed curiosity.

Choose Foundational Classes First

Introductory or Level 1 offerings are designed to refine alignment, breathwork, and functional movement—the pillars that elevate every future class.

Remember, Slow is Powerful

Pilates rewards those who approach it with patience. A controlled, wellaligned movement does more for your body than rushing through advanced exercises.

Let your instructor know if you’re returning after a break or managing limitations. Today’s teachers are trained to modify intuitively and supportively.

Two or three sessions a week create noticeable improvements in posture, core strength, mobility, and mental clarity.

Each session is an opportunity to rediscover your body’s intelligence and potential.

What You’ll Experience in Your First Class

A good Pilates class feels luxurious in its intention. You’ll move with control, connect breath to motion, and engage deep muscles that often go silent in daily life. Expect a sense of refreshing alignment and an energized calm that lingers long after class ends. Pilates offers an approachable elegance—an invitation to feel both strong and centered, sculpted yet balanced. It’s a practice that lives with you beyond the studio. “Don’t wait for the right time, just get started,” urges Stephanie. “We all start somewhere. Pilates is an incredible way to support you wherever you are in life, no experience necessary. There is space for everyone. With the right educated teacher, the session should be more than just a fitness class. It is life-giving, energizing, inspiring, engaging, and encouraging. Clients always say, ‘I wish I started sooner.’”

Pilates isn’t just a workout—it’s a return to yourself. “Pilates is truly magical how it can come alongside you and support you wherever you are,” Stephanie assures. Whether you’re stepping into the studio for the first time or easing back after time away, each breath, each controlled movement, and each moment of mindful alignment brings you a little closer to finding your core—both physically and in the deeper, figurative sense. Consider this your invitation to rediscover strength, curiosity, and confidence from the inside out. After all, your core has been there all along—it’s just waiting for you to find it again.

Dr. Behr Introduces Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy Dr. Kathleen Behr is thrilled to introduce bioidentical hormone replacement therapy (BHRT) at her Central Valley offices! “Many of the symptoms of hormone decline and deficiency are mistakenly attributed to ‘normal’ signs of aging,” she explains. “With bioidentical hormone replacement, most patients feel so much better and have much more vitality. As a 62-year-old woman, BHRT has changed my life by increasing my well-being, energy, mental clarity, and libido. I brought BHRT into my practice to help my patients’ overall wellness. Because hormones directly influence skin health, collagen production, energy levels, and muscle tone, BHRT beautifully complements our aesthetic, wellness, and body treatments by helping patients feel their best from the inside out.”

four times a year for woman and three times a year for men. This leads to a consistent level of hormone release with the least fluctuations.”

For those new to the concept, “Bioidentical hormones are structurally identical to hormones our bodies naturally produce,” Dr. Behr elaborates. “Bioidenticals—typically sourced from plants like soy or yams—have fewer side effects and offer optimal results. Synthetic hormones, on the other hand, are man-made or derived from animals and are chemically different from our natural hormones. We prefer pellet administration of BHRT because it provides the most consistent hormone levels, customized dosing, improved safety, and best overall results. The testosterone and/or estrogen pellets are inserted into the fat on the outer hip or buttock area

The evaluation process for determining if BHRT will be a good avenue to pursue is relatively straightforward. “We begin with a one-on-one consultation to review symptoms, medical history, and any contraindications, such as hormone-sensitive cancers,” begins Dr. Behr. “We then order a comprehensive blood panel focused on hormone and thyroid levels. By combining lab results with how the patient is feeling day-to-day, we determine the appropriate dose. Most people over the age of 40 can benefit, but the key is truly understanding each individual’s biochemistry and needs.”

There are many common, often overlooked signs of hormonal imbalance. “Many women assume hormonal symptoms are simply part of aging and don’t realize how much better they could feel. Joint pain, poor sleep, brain fog, mood swings, low libido, weight gain, and even changes in bone density are all common signs of decreasing hormone levels,” she clarifies. “After treatment, we often hear, ‘I didn’t realize how bad I felt until I finally felt better’, which is a powerful reminder of how impactful hormone balance can be.”

Speaking from Experience Both women and men benefit greatly from BHRT, and couples often find it enhances their shared quality of life. After 35 years of marriage, my husband and I both began BHRT and have felt a renewed energy in every area of life. When both partners feel strong, rested, and vital, it elevates their relationship. Common Misconceptions Many people assume BHRT is the same as older synthetic hormone therapies—it’s not. Bioidentical hormones administered by pellets are much more effective and with fewer side effects. It is also important that patients are aware that a “normal” hormone levels are not optimal levels to achieve the best results. Another misconception is that therapy is only for getting through menopause. This is false—patients start benefiting during perimenopause all the way into their 80s. It’s never “too late,” and you don’t have to be postmenopausal to benefit. Another myth is that all hormone therapy is the same or that hormones inherently cause cancer, which are both untrue. Tailoring Your BHRT Plan Customization is essential. We evaluate symptoms, blood levels, lifestyle, and activity level—each influence how quickly the body metabolizes hormones. Some individuals are more sensitive to medication than others, so we use a personalized approach and a six-week follow-up to fine-tune dosing. Our goal is always to optimize hormone levels to give patients the highest degree of vitality and balance. Safety is the Priority Studies show no increased risk of breast, uterine, or prostate cancer with BHRT, and in 2025 the FDA removed black box warnings related to cardiovascular disease, breast cancer, and dementia. Regular monitoring—like mammograms and PSA levels—is still essential. But, research now demonstrates that BHRT may actually support cardiovascular health and help protect against Alzheimer’s and osteoporosis. Safety and oversight remain central to our approach.

What Patients Notice First While every patient is unique, many notice improvements in sleep, energy, mental clarity, and sexual desire early on. Some feel a difference within a week of pellet placement, with the most significant results typically appearing around six weeks. These early changes often spark a renewed sense of vitality that continues to build as hormone levels stabilize. Fast-Acting, Long-Term Benefits Many patients begin to feel a difference within the first week, with peak improvement around six weeks when we repeat labs and determine whether an adjustment in dosing is needed at the next pellet insertion. We offer a year-long treatment plan to maintain optimal levels without fluctuation. Throughout the process, we stay closely involved to monitor progress and address any side effects. Maximizing Patient Results We encourage habits that support long-term vitality—balanced nutrition, higher protein intake, reduced processed foods, and regular fitness. At Behr Body, we also offer weight-loss support with GLP-1 therapies, which pair beautifully with BHRT. Hormone optimization improves muscle building, sleep quality, and overall resilience. We maintain ongoing communication to help patients manage stress and integrate wellness practices into daily life. Be Empowered to Try it Education is truly empowering. A personalized consultation allows us to review symptoms, answer every question, and help patients understand their options with clarity and confidence. The moment people realize they can take charge of their vitality at any age is transformative—and often the beginning of a healthier, more energetic chapter of life.

Juicing for Radiance A Fresh Start for a New Year Editorial Director Lauren Barisic

As we step into a new year, the desire to refresh, reset, and nourish from within feels almost instinctive. While the wellness landscape is always evolving, one practice remains timeless in its appeal: juicing. Equal parts beauty ritual and nutritional therapy, juicing offers a direct, invigorating way to flood your body with micronutrients, energize your system, and reveal a glow that begins deep beneath the surface.

Why Juicing Works

Fresh-pressed juices deliver an ultra-concentrated dose of vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, and plant compounds your body can absorb quickly and efficiently. Many people notice improvements in energy, digestion, and skin clarity within days. Because juicing removes most of the fiber, the nutrients move rapidly into the bloodstream, giving your cells the raw materials they need to support repair, immune resilience, collagen production, and metabolic balance. Juicing also gives your digestive system a break from the constant work of processing whole foods. While this isn’t a substitute for long-term balanced eating, short periods of reduced digestive load can support detoxification pathways and help you reestablish a more intentional relationship with food.

Choosing the Right Juicer

A juicer can be an investment, so look for something that fits your lifestyle and commitment level. Centrifugal juicers are fast and user-friendly—ideal for beginners. Cold-press (masticating) juicers extract juice more slowly but preserve more nutrients and yield more from leafy greens. Blenders can also be used for whole-food juices or smoothies if you prefer to keep the fiber intact. If you’re unsure where to start, borrow a friend’s machine or try a week of local cold-pressed juice deliveries to see what resonates.

Begin Gently

For anyone new to juicing, the best approach is ease and consistency. Start by adding one fresh juice to your morning routine a few days a week. Think of it as hydration with benefits—like your daily water, upgraded. Begin with simple combinations. Green Glow: cucumber + celery + lemon + green apple. Radiance Root: carrot + ginger + orange. Citrus Energizer: grapefruit + mint. These blends offer bright flavor, balanced nutrients, and steady energy without the intensity of deeper detox formulas.

When to Juice

While there’s no single “perfect” time, most wellness practitioners recommend juicing in the morning, when hydration and nutrient absorption are highest. A green juice on an empty stomach can help reset your palate and fuel metabolism for the day. Juicing can also be used strategically: after holidays when your system craves simplicity; during seasonal transitions in spring and fall; before or after travel to support immunity; or during stressful periods when digestion and skin tend to reflect internal overload. Sometimes, a few fresh juices are simply what your body needs to get back on track.

Optimizing Your Efforts

A juice can be as powerful—or as gentle—as you make it. Keep these tips in mind to maximize your results. Balance natural sugars by pairing fruit with greens, herbs, or celery to avoid blood sugar spikes. Add boosters like turmeric, ginger, parsley, aloe vera, chlorophyll drops, or spirulina to elevate nutrient density. Stay hydrated throughout the day—juicing complements water, not replaces it. Support detox pathways with light movement, Epsom salt baths, sauna, and dry brushing. Keep ingredients cold and fresh, and drink your juice within 20 to 30 minutes when possible to minimize oxidation.

Juicing with the Seasons

Seasonal produce doesn’t just taste better—it aligns beautifully with your body’s needs throughout the year. In-season ingredients are fresher, richer in nutrients, and naturally support your shifting physiological rhythms. By rotating ingredients, you diversify your nutrient intake and stay in harmony with nature’s cycles. Winter citrus, carrots, ginger, turmeric, pear Goals: immunity, warmth, hydration Spring celery, cucumber, herbs, berries, leafy greens Goals: cleansing, de-bloating, skin clarity Summer watermelon, mint, pineapple, melon, kale Goals: cooling, mineral replenishment, sun protection Fall apple, beet, fennel, pomegranate, sweet potato Goals: grounding, digestion, antioxidant repair

Listen to Your Body

Juicing isn’t one-size-fits-all. Some days your body will crave something energizing and green; other days, something grounding and root-forward. Women may notice shifts based on hormone cycles—greens for follicular vitality, iron-rich beets during menstruation, or anti-inflammatory ginger during stress. Men may gravitate toward performance-focused blends that support muscle repair, mental clarity, and cardiovascular health. The key is tuning in. Your body will tell you what it needs—you simply need to listen.

A Ritual, Not a Race

Juicing isn’t meant to be a strict cleanse or an all-or-nothing regime. It’s a ritual of nourishment—a small luxury you can give your body in the midst of busy days. It’s beauty from within, felt first and seen soon after. With each glass, you’re not just feeding yourself—you’re energizing your glow, refreshing your mindset, and stepping into the year aligned, vibrant, and ready to thrive. In the end, juicing for radiance is more than a wellness trend—it’s an invitation to meet yourself in a brighter, clearer, more energized place. Each glass offers not only a fresh start in this new year, but also on any day you choose to slow down, listen inward, and nourish intentionally. Think of your juicing ritual as a return to your natural glow—one that builds quietly, sip by sip, until you feel it in your skin, your energy, and the way you move through the world. As you step through 2026, let your juice be your reminder that renewal can be deliciously simple.

Health Redefining Women’s

Essential Treatments that Transform Care at Every Stage Health & Fitness Contributor Audrey Barrington Photographer Don Dizon

Women’s healthcare has long been overdue for transformation. For many women, the experience has felt rushed, transactional, or disconnected from their real lives—appointments are brief, symptoms are minimized, and complex concerns, especially those tied to hormones, intimacy, or chronic gynecologic conditions, often go unresolved. Today, however, women’s medicine is undergoing a meaningful shift toward deeper listening, individualized care, and long-term wellness. In the Central Valley, The GYN Lounge is at the center of this evolution. Led by board-certified specialist Dr. Adanna Ikedilo, MD, FACOG, the Fresno-based practice is redefining care through a suite of evidence-based treatments designed to address often under-recognized needs in women’s health—each thoughtfully tailored to support confidence, function, and quality of life across every stage of womanhood. At The GYN Lounge, the emphasis is on care that honors each woman’s story rather than forcing her into a standardized protocol. This philosophy moves away from rushed, one-size-fits-all medicine and toward thoughtful, collaborative care—an approach that allows women to feel seen, heard, and supported across every phase of life. “At The GYN Lounge, personalization restores trust,” Dr. Ikedilo explains. “When women are truly heard, care becomes more precise, adherence improves, and outcomes follow. The biggest impact is empowerment. Patients understand their bodies, participate in decisions, and experience care that actually fits their lives.” That level of personalization is made possible in part by the practice’s cash-pay model, which removes many of the constraints that can limit traditional care. For women whose concerns have been dismissed or deprioritized—particularly in areas like hormone balance or intimate wellness—this structure creates space for deeper evaluation and more meaningful solutions. “A cash-pay model gives us time and flexibility,” Dr. Ikedilo notes. “We can individualize care without insurance constraints, address concerns often dismissed in traditional settings, and support women through perimenopause, menopause, and beyond with thoughtful, comprehensive plans that prioritize quality, dignity, and long-term wellbeing. A cash-pay model gives us time and clinical freedom. It opens access to evidence-based treatments, medical innovations, and patented therapies often excluded by insurance.”

O

ne area where that freedom has been especially impactful is intimate wellness. Decreased sensitivity, urinary incontinence, and vaginal dryness are common concerns, yet they remain stigmatized or brushed aside in many clinical settings. At The GYN Lounge, these issues are treated as essential components of women’s health. The O-Shot directly addresses these concerns through a regenerative, non-surgical approach that uses the patient’s own platelet-rich plasma (PRP) to enhance tissue repair and rejuvenation. By stimulating collagen and elastin production, encouraging new blood vessel growth, and improving circulation, the O-Shot can improve sexual pleasure, reduce mild urinary incontinence, and restore natural lubrication—benefits that are particularly meaningful after childbirth, during menopause, or with age-related collagen loss. That evolution also includes state-of-the-art, hormone-free options like the MonaLisa Touch, a minimally invasive laser treatment that stimulates collagen production and supports natural tissue regeneration. Designed to address symptoms associated with genitourinary syndrome of menopause—such as dryness, irritation, burning, and painful intercourse—the procedure is quick, performed in-office, and requires little to no downtime. Many women notice improvement after their first session, with continued benefits as tissue health is restored. Hormonal health is equally central to long-term wellbeing. Hormone imbalances can affect mood, energy, sleep, libido, metabolism, and overall quality of life, yet many women struggle for years without clear answers. Hormone therapy at The GYN Lounge is tailored to the individual, addressing symptoms related to perimenopause, menopause, or other hormonal shifts with precision rather than generic prescriptions.

“When women are encouraged to ask questions and participate in decisions, the doctor-patient relationship becomes a true partnership. Care shifts from directive to collaborative, leading to better understanding, trust, and follow-through.” — Dr. Adanna Ikedilo, MD, FACOG

D

r. Ikedilo sees these innovations as part of a larger shift in how women’s discomfort has historically been normalized. “I’m most excited about the convergence of regenerative therapies, advanced hormone optimization, and minimally invasive technologies that restore function, not just treat symptoms,” she says. “These innovations exist so women no longer have to ‘just live with it.’ For generations, women were told to accept discomfort, loss of function, or diminished confidence as normal. Treatments like vaginal laser therapy and regenerative injections allow us to address sexual health, tissue integrity, and quality of life in ways that were previously unavailable. This shift restores not only physical well-being, but dignity, confidence, and quality of life in ways women were never previously offered.” “Women’s health is expanding beyond reproduction into longevity, quality of life, and function,” Dr. Ikedilo points out. “With U.S. women now living into their 80s on average, decades beyond childbearing, medicine must evolve to support health across aging. Priorities now include hormonal balance, metabolic health, sexual wellness, bone and brain health. Treatment standards are evolving toward proactive, preventive, and individualized care that supports women not just through fertility, but through decades of healthy living.” Fertility care is another deeply personal area where individualized attention makes a significant difference. Trying to conceive can be joyful, but it can also be emotionally taxing. At The GYN Lounge, infertility services begin with comprehensive evaluations—including detailed history reviews, ovulation tracking, hormonal testing, and imaging—to help clarify underlying issues and empower women with a clearer understanding of their reproductive health. This thoughtful, step-by-step process emphasizes compassion and partnership, allowing patients to navigate their options with confidence rather than confusion. For women living with chronic gynecologic conditions like endometriosis or fibroids, the stakes are even higher. These conditions can cause significant pain, heavy bleeding, infertility, and daily disruption—yet they are often minimized as “normal.” At The GYN Lounge, they are taken seriously, with treatment plans that may include medical management, minimally invasive surgery, or a hybrid approach tailored to each patient’s goals. Empowering women with knowledge and options helps reduce the long-term burden these conditions can impose. Underlying all of these treatments is a commitment to open dialogue and shared decision-making. “When women are encouraged to ask questions and participate in decisions, the doctor-patient relationship becomes a true partnership,” says Dr. Ikedilo. “Care shifts from directive to collaborative, leading to better understanding, trust, and follow-through.” She emphasizes that while clinical expertise is essential, listening to a woman’s lived experience is equally critical to achieving the best outcomes.

“I bring medical knowledge, how systems interact, and how to keep care safe, but a textbook can’t teach me a woman’s lived experience. That requires conversation. The best outcomes come from collaboration, where patients share their goals and concerns and we build care together. My advice to women is this: your symptoms are valid, your concerns matter, and your voice belongs in the room. Your needs are unique, just like your DNA. You deserve care that reflects you, not a generic template. You deserve explanations that make sense and options that align with your values and goals. Speaking up isn’t being difficult, it’s being an informed, empowered participant in your own care.”

L

ooking ahead, Dr. Ikedilo sees the future of women’s medicine as both expansive and restorative. “The future of women’s medicine is integrated, preventive, and deeply patientcentered,” she explains, noting that gynecologists are reclaiming their role as leaders in comprehensive women’s health. Rather than episodic visits focused solely on acute issues, care will increasingly address menopause, fertility, metabolic health, sexual wellness, and chronic conditions together—optimizing not just longevity, but quality of life. “In recent years, OB-GYNs have been stretched thin by workforce shortages, forcing a focus on pregnancy and reproductive volume, often at the expense of comprehensive gynecologic care. As a result, gaps formed and others stepped in without the depth of training women deserve. The future is a reclaiming of that space.” Dr. Ikedilo sees gynecologists re-establishing themselves as leaders in women’s health, expanding beyond insurance-limited models to offer evidence-based, innovative options. “Gynecologists are uniquely positioned to lead this shift because we understand hormonal health, reproductive physiology, and how these systems affect the entire body over a woman’s lifetime. Care will move beyond episodic visits to proactive strategies that address menopause, fertility, metabolic health, sexual wellness, and chronic conditions together. The goal is not just treating disease, but optimizing long-term health, function, and quality of life through collaborative, evidence-based, and individualized care models.” Women deserve more than a diagnosis and a routine treatment plan. At The GYN Lounge, the goal is something deeper: care that validates experiences, restores trust, and empowers women to take ownership of their health. Through evidence-based treatments and a philosophy rooted in listening, collaboration, and respect, Dr. Ikedilo is helping shape a future where women’s health is no longer minimized, but meaningfully supported at every stage of life.

“Wellness and beauty when I was younger wasn’t the forefront of my priorities,” Mackenzie Cota, RN admits. “I’ve come a long way from cleanser, running stadiums, and the tanning bed five times a week.” Today, her definition of beauty is quieter, deeper, and far more intentional—rooted in nourishment, consistency, and self-respect. Counting protein intake, committing to a thoughtful skincare routine, and prioritizing sleep are no longer afterthoughts, but non-negotiables. That evolution—from hustle and surface-level habits to holistic wellness and inner alignment—mirrors Mackenzie’s personal and professional journey, one shaped by grit, growth, and a deep desire to help others feel confident in their own skin. Born in small-town Medford, Oregon, Mackenzie’s family relocated to California due to her grandfather’s work, eventually settling in Fresno where she attended Carden School. After graduating, she chose a path far from conventional. “I didn’t go the traditional route,” she admits. “I waited on school to pursue modeling, signed with a modeling agency in Los Angeles and had jobs throughout California. I eventually moved to San Francisco.” Despite her fast-paced lifestyle, Fresno remained a frequent stop—home base amid constant motion. “I remember going from San Francisco to San Diego on a train for a six-week job, but that’s just how modeling was back then—it was a grind. Instagram wasn’t the monster it is now. You had to prove yourself by being really available.” That availability often meant sleeping in her car to secure early casting calls before driving hours back to bartending shifts in San Francisco or Fresno. “That was the hustle and I honestly loved every bit of it.” Modeling in 2009 bore little resemblance to the influencer-driven industry of today. “Now we have Instagram, followers, content creators, and photographers that love collaborations with each other and even YouTube. It’s amazing how much exposure someone can get in the modeling industry now or the level of collaboration that can happen today without consistently sitting at those tables and have those meetings.” Back then, success required headshots submitted in person and countless auditions walking “in what felt like the skinniest, tallest heels to prove yourself, every time. Doing that all with zero online presence—it was amazing, but also a very humbling experience.” A pivotal influence in Mackenzie’s life was her grandmother. “She raised me half the time,” Mackenzie shares. “She was an esthetician herself before having children. She was very consistent about her skincare routine, always had healthy glowing skin, and prioritized her health.” Her grandmother’s sudden passing from cancer left a deep imprint. “She passed away from cancer a few weeks after it was discovered, and as a 16-year-old, that grief was hard. So finding a career outside of modeling, esthetics felt like the only thing that made sense. I really wanted to help people feel better about themselves.”

Returning to Fresno wasn’t part of the plan, but it became a turning point. Mackenzie enrolled in beauty school, earned her esthetician license, and began practicing chemical peels and eyelash extensions. Quickly, she realized her clients’ needs extended far beyond the surface. “I actually bartended my way through esthetician and nursing school at multiple restaurants in Fresno/Clovis for years,” she recounts. “After becoming a licensed esthetician, I worked at a salon and spa until we had our first daughter.” Today, she and her husband Dustin are raising three little girls: Kensington, Madelyn, and baby Autumn. Pregnancy and childbirth deepened Mackenzie’s fascination with the body’s complexity. “During my final year of nursing school, I worked in labor and delivery (L&D) at Clovis Community Hospital, and also at Dr. Bautista’s functional wellness office. At Dr B’s office is where my passion for hormones really began.” She now balances ER work at St. Agnes while growing her career in medical aesthetics at Brilyn Health & Anti-Aging. Each chapter of her career contributes to her comprehensive approach. “My esthetician background helps me guide patients on skin health, my L&D and functional medicine experience helps me explain hormone changes from childbirth and aging, and my ER background keeps me grounded, cautious, and safety-focused with every procedure.” Even bartending played a role. “It taught me how to connect with all kinds of personalities and make people feel comfortable, which is such a big part of aesthetic care.” One hallmark of Mackenzie’s practice is her emphasis on blood work. “I’m huge on listening to your body. Not only does your body ‘keep the score’ but it is always telling us what we need or do not need,” she explains. “Treating patients’ issues from the inside out is a priority. If there is something we can do naturally, let’s do that first.” Education anchors that philosophy. “Are your hormones at an optimal level? How’re your vitamins and supplements? What deficiencies might you have?” she asks. Many patients, she notes, are unaware of underlying imbalances. “Referring them to a provider I know and trust to go over their blood results with them has been sometimes life-changing for them. Then, let me help supplement you. I love an IV or vitamin injections for deficiencies.” Her personal wellness mirrors her professional values: hydration, skincare (including retinol), regular hydra facials, and movement. “Currently, breastfeeding is my cardio these days,” she laughs, “but usually hot yoga, reformer Pilates, and weight training are my perfect balance.” Protecting her peace is non-negotiable. “I’m very intentional now about who and what I allow into my life, and creating those boundaries has made me a much better mom, wife, and provider. I also prioritize my internal health just as much as the aesthetic side—like hydration, hormones, gut health—because when those are supported, everything else feels better and can make literally every aesthetic procedure look better.”

“Then, of course, there are the little things, like going to bed early or taking five minutes in my car after school drop-off to myself. It sounds funny, but those small pauses are like a reset button for me. They help me show up with more clarity and softness in every area of my life.” Every day, Mackenzie looks forward to helping people look and feel their best. “I truly love that people are putting a spotlight on their unique features instead of over filling like they used to. I’m noticing that more and more, people in this industry are realizing there is so much beauty in their natural features. I hope I speak for most of the injectors when I say this—tell us what you love and let us help you complement it.” Mackenzie champions a conservative, enhancement-focused approach to aesthetics. “I think women often feel like they need to change so much about themselves when most people just need small tweaks and some support with the things you can’t see, like vitamin deficiencies, hormones, sleep, hydration, gut health, or stress,” she suggests. “I never want someone to walk out looking overdone or feeling like they need to chase perfection. I’m very honest with my patients about what’s not necessary, and what will actually support their natural features. For me, aesthetics is about enhancing—not transforming—while also focusing and supporting overall wellness.” Her goal is alignment, inside and out. Motherhood has sharpened that lens. “Experiencing pregnancy, postpartum, and all the changes that come with becoming a mom made me so passionate about understanding hormone shifts, healing, and how a woman’s body evolves over time. It shaped the way I approach aesthetics, too—not as a way to ‘fix’ someone, but caring for yourself, honoring your body, and feeling good in your skin. It reminds me why wellness matters and why confidence is such a powerful part of a woman’s health.” Raising daughters in the age of social media has reinforced her commitment to authenticity and boundaries. Authenticity is essential. “This industry is beautiful, but it can also lean toward comparison and pressure, and I never want my daughters to grow up feeling like they need any of it to be enough. That awareness has really shaped how I show up both at home and at work,” she shares. “Over the past three years, I’ve become very intentional about the energy, people, and influences I allow around us. The boundaries I have today are almost unrecognizable compared to what we accepted three years ago and that’s definitely been one of the healthiest shifts for our family.” This trickle-down effect enables Mackenzie to meet each client where they’re at. “Working with clients every day, I’m constantly reminded that people are genuinely so beautiful in their own ways. When we’re younger, it’s easy to fixate on the things we don’t love about ourselves, and I see how deeply words can impact someone’s confidence. Because of that, I’m mindful about how I speak to my patients, my clients, and especially my children,” she says. “This career has definitely taught me so much about people, but motherhood has really taught me even more about purpose. Bringing those together has shaped me into the woman—and the provider—I am today.”

Even Mackenzie will admit: “Looking and feeling your best with multiple children, specifically with a newborn, are two entirely different things—most days you really do have to choose one. Every mom who has walked through this season knows that balance kind of just becomes a moving target for a while. Some days, ‘looking my best’ simply means I managed to wash my hair, while ‘feeling my best’ means I got five consecutive hours of sleep, (but probably have spit up on my shirt),” she chuckles. “What keeps me really grounded right now are the small rituals that help me feel human again. We’ve been doing slow Pilates sessions—my older girls even join me—then we get our post-workout smoothies, having date nights with my husband, an ‘everything shower,’” she laughs, “and, most importantly, giving myself grace in this beautifully chaotic chapter.” The year 2025 ushered in more than one major life moment for Mackenzie. After being together for over a decade—not to mention four years of friendship prior—Mackenzie and Dustin celebrated their 10-year anniversary with a vow renewal-style wedding in Hawaii surrounded by a small circle of friends and family in February. “Our original wedding plans were actually set for 2020, but like many others, the pandemic shifted everything! Between the pandemic and a very challenging chapter of life, we were tested in ways we never imagined, our plans were put on hold. But through the grace of God, we made it through those seasons. Coming out the other side, we felt incredibly grateful to recommit to one another with the people who truly know our hearts. Shortly after, we welcomed our rainbow baby, Autumn, a blessing that made that season of renewal even sweeter.” A couple years ago, Mackenzie went through a season where she was truly struggling. “My hair wasn’t just thinning,” she divulges. “I had actual bald patches—60% of my hair was gone. I was getting fitted for wigs and using color spray to cover them. My girls watched me walk through that, and they also watched me change my lifestyle, address my health, and really rebuild my boundaries and my health. It was really tough, but going through it truly made all of us so much more aware of what we put in/on our bodies and who/what we allow around us.” That experience taught her that wellness isn’t perfect, and it’s not always pretty. “It’s showing up for yourself even when you’re discouraged. It’s choosing healing over hiding. And truly letting my kids see me fight for my health so they learn to fight for theirs, too.” Mackenzie Cota’s story is not one of perfection, but of presence—choosing intention over excess, wellness over pressure, and grace over comparison. In both her life and her practice, she embodies a modern definition of beauty: one rooted in health, honesty, and self-respect. “I want my daughters to know that their true beauty comes from who God created them to be—kind, confident, and grounded—not from how they look on the outside,” she says. “I want them to see that confidence and grace come from within, and that caring for yourself is an act of gratitude, not insecurity.” By living that truth daily, Mackenzie isn’t just caring for bodies—she’s shaping a quieter, more empowered future for women to feel at home in their own skin.
