SHAKE + STIR The Lime Lite A Galentine’s Day Destination Feature Editor Elisabeth Ross Photographer Don Dizon

—32— FEB

G

alentine’s Day is the perfect excuse to get together with your gal pals, so step into The Lime Lite for girl’s night! Whatever may be the occasion that draws you in, Lime Lite offers some of the best food and drinks in town with an atmosphere that begs patrons to sit and stay awhile. For this latest installment of Shake+Stir, CVLUX’s Editorial Director Lauren Barisic was accompanied by Kathryn Marziliano, Erin Melkonian, Tracy Kashian, Jess Counts, and Laura Thompson for a tasting of five menu items and three cocktails. Out first was the Lime Lite Martini, which Tracy enthusiastically professes, “This is my favorite drink in town!” “It has cilantro, which I like because it gives it more punch,” Jess seconds. A pale green concoction of Tito’s vodka, freshly squeezed lemon-lime juice, house-made simple syrup, and speckles of chopped herb with a sugared rim make it as fun to look at as it is to drink. The Lime Lite’s Beet Salad makes a convincing argument even to non-beet lovers. Jess keenly points out, “The whipped goat cheese beautifully compliments the earthiness of the slow-roasted beets,” which are topped with local greens, sliced seasonal fruits, toasted pistachios, and a champagne vinaigrette. “It’s all about the texture here,” states Erin, who notes that in addition to incredible flavor, “it’s packed densely with nutrients.” A crowd favorite year-round, the restaurant’s Surf & Turf never disappoints. “I almost always order this,” confesses Kathryn. “It’s the perfect dinner with a side salad.” Impossibly tender seared ponzu steak is topped with crispy battered siracha shrimp, both of which rest in a pool of grilled scallion ponzu sauce and are finished with just a sprinkling of greens and paper-thin pickled Fresno chili for a bit of heat. If you aren’t an ahi fan, this Seared Tuna Tataki will be your best bet at liking the fish. But if you are into it, this dish will tantalize your taste buds. Nori-crusted tuna rests on spicy ponzu sauce with a dainty dollop of wasabi-avocado salsa and a sliver of Fresno chili on top. Black sesame tempura and honey cashews dot the plate. “I’d enjoy this dish any time of the year,” Erin admits. “It’s so satisfying but not too filling, so it’s a great starter, and I just love how the different flavors come together so seamlessly.”

B

lush and rouge colors are synonymous with the Love Month, making the translucent pink Velvet Underground an ideal libation to order. Its tinge of lavender is due to the addition of Empress Indigo Gin, which Kathryn loves since it’s so versatile. “It was well-balanced with citrus and sweetness to soften and enhance the Empress 1908 botanicals,” she shares. “A lovely drink no matter what time of day.” Freshly squeezed lemon-lime juice, Giffords Wild Elderflower Liqueur, and a champagne float truly embody all that a Valentine sipper should include. Thanks to the abundance of produce in the Central Valley, one of autumn’s favorite squashes can be enjoyed even into the New Year. Here, Butternut Ravioli is stuffed with ricotta and mascarpone. A medley of maitake mushrooms, kale, crispy sage, toasted pine nuts, and brown butter pair brilliantly together, allowing this dish to transcend the seasons. “I really appreciate how the fresh veggies make this pasta feel like a lighter dish,” comments Laura. Arguably, no V-Day dining experience would be complete without lobster. This drool-inducing Lobster Mac is served in an iron skillet. Homemade pasta is cloaked in cheesy sauce and black truffles and then topped with herb-roasted lobster and brown butter breadcrumbs. “Who does not love lobster macaroni and cheese?” Tracy questions enthusiastically, “And when you add the truffle, it is a trifecta of goodness!” Lime Lite’s House Cosmo is probably unlike any Cosmo you’ve ever had. “Of all the signature cocktails here, the consistency of this drink is what makes it a top pick for me,” Laura imparts. Tito’s Handmade Vodka, Curaçao, and limoncello are mixed with house-made cranberry-raspberry jam, which is key to the potion’s velvety texture and rosy hue. A lime wheel nods at the inclusion of the freshly squeezed lemon-lime juice, which is featured in many of the restaurant’s cocktails, including this one. The Lime Lite may be a Galentine’s Day destination for this feature, but frankly, it’s always a great pick no matter if you’re single, coupled, somewhere in between, or simply meeting up with friends and family. Interestingly enough, prioritizing quality time with those we love was a hot topic of conversation amongst the ladies at this sitting. February may be the month of love, but love for great food, drinks, and company never goes out of season.

ROME Editorial Director Lauren Barisic Photographer Nakutis Photography

here are destination weddings, and then, there are destination weddings. The nuptials of Francesca LaRocca and Wilson Ashford are decidedly the latter. Held in Italy, overlooking the “Eternal City” of Rome, and unarguably the wedding of the summer of 2023, it’s the stuff dreams are made of. Yet, this Italian fairytale began once upon a time in Fresno, California. Well, the main characters of this story met in Hawaii, in 2018, at a mutual friend’s wedding. This is an example of time being everything. “We had been neighbors our whole life and never met until Hawaii. I always knew who Pat [LaRocca] was, but I never knew he had daughters,” Wilson explains of the pair’s proximity while growing up. “We ended up hitting it off at the wedding, and the rest is history,” Francesca seconds. The road to Rome was a few years in the making, and the proposal had its own set of curve balls. Wilson had planned to propose to Francesca on a hot air balloon ride, but when the date approached, in May of 2021, it was too windy to fly. Wilson was determined to ask Francesca to marry him that weekend, so with her sister Isabella’s help, the plan moved to Shaver Lake since the couple would often go up there alone during COVID. “We always have impromptu trips to Shaver, so when Wilson asked me if I wanted to go up the night before, I didn’t think anything of it. I barely packed anything.” “Francesca always told me that whenever I was going to propose, the only thing that she wanted was to be completely surprised.” When he finally popped the question, “I definitely was surprised,” Francesca affirms. “We woke up Sunday morning and did our normal routine, walking the dog around our neighborhood. Next thing I knew, Wilson was down on one knee, and my parents and sister were hiding in the woods behind a tree.” For Francesca, Italy was love at first sight. Ever since she visited there for the first time at age seven, she had always wanted to get married in the land of her ancestors. “I always talked about how special it would be to get married there,” Francesca recounts. “I definitely would tell Wilson before getting engaged that if it were up to me, we would get married in Italy. Sure enough, when we got engaged and everyone was asking where we wanted to get married, and I told them ‘Italy!’ My parents were excited but a little hesitant because it seemed like a lot of work to plan a destination wedding. We also wanted to make sure Wilson’s family was on-board, which they were. So, I reached out to my cousin Dena, who lives in Rome, for help, and she sent me a list of venues in Rome, Tuscany, Sicily, and Sorrento, and we went from there.” After narrowing down that list to two places, one in Sorrento and one in Rome, the couple decided upon an unseen venue. “I wanted a venue that spoke for itself, and both venues were absolutely stunning,” admits Francesca. “I had wanted to get married on the water, so Sorrento seemed perfect, but it was more challenging for our guests to get to,” Wilson concedes. Dena toured the Roman venue, Villa Miani, and sent them videos and photos. “It was breathtaking from her videos, so I could only imagine how spectacular it was going to be in person,” Francesca reminisces. “The grounds were immaculate, and the view was absolutely incredible. From the venue, you can see all of Rome—the Vatican, colosseum, etc.” That’s all it took for the two to book the venue about a year and a half before the wedding. Yet,

this was only the first step. Considering that planning a wedding abroad is challenging alone, doing so in post-COVID times and without speaking Italian added to the task at hand. “We had a wedding planner from Italy, but honestly, thank goodness for my cousin Dena because she really helped make the whole wedding come together.” The Big Day was set for Saturday, July 8th, 2023. When you invite 400 people to a destination wedding and 215 RSVP “yes”, the event is much more than a day-long celebration. The couple arrived in Italy on Sunday, July 1st. “We wanted to get there early to finalize any wedding details and have time to hang out with our family and friends who traveled so far to celebrate with us,” Wilson recalls. “It was nice because some of our family and friends vacationed before our wedding and some after, so we wanted to make sure we spent time with everyone!” shares Francesca. On the Thursday night before the wedding, the couple had a welcome party at The Waldorf Astoria for those who made the transatlantic trip. “It was our chance to mingle with everyone before the wedding and thank them for traveling so far,” she says as Wilson reiterates, “Thursday was a fun night and the weather could not have been more perfect.”

F

rancesca and Wilson’s siblings stood by their sides as they took their vows. “My brother, Trenton, was my best man. I had eight groomsmen in total, but two couldn’t make it because they had just had babies,” explains Wilson. “My sister, Isabella, was my maid of honor,” and Francesca also had eight bridesmaids altogether. The bride wore Monique Lhuillier and carried her mother’s wedding purse, while the groom sported an Armani tuxedo. Both donned matching rings. Because of the legalities involved with a wedding taking place in another country, Francesca clarifies, “We got married in Fresno at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in May before because we wanted a church wedding.” Since they legally had to get married in the United States before going to Italy, she got two rings: “One for our church wedding and then matching rings for our wedding in Italy,” which they incidentally found while walking the streets of Rome in the days leading up to the wedding. This laid-back nature is another trait that both Francesca and Wilson share, and this approach is readily apparent in their wedding aesthetic. It was of utmost importance to her that their venue spoke for itself and didn’t need any extra fluff. “The view was stunning, so I didn’t want to take away from that. I definitely have more of a romantic style, I would say, so I wanted a lot of candles and not an overwhelming amount of flowers,” Francesca elaborates. Above all, Wilson echoes, “We wanted good food, good music, and our family and friends to have a great time.” With a desire to embody simplicity, timelessness, and understated elegance, the couple sought to create a moment that they could look back on 20 years from now and still be in love with their choice of location, aesthetics, and outfits. At the end of the day, “Our family and friends really made this wedding magical. We had A TON of food. Italians love to eat, so my dad wanted to make sure no one left hungry,” Francesca laughs. “We also had violinists greeting our guests as they arrived, three tenors that surprised our guests during our first course, a live band performing as we danced in between meal courses, and a DJ for the after party which was upstairs in the villa.”

W

edding food isn’t often memorable, but in true Italian style, the LaRocca + Ashford wedding is an exception to this norm. At the cocktail hour, there was a large appetizer spread overlooking the entire city of Rome, featuring a fresh mozzarella station, Italian antipasti buffet, assorted marinated fish, and an Aperol Spritz cart. A three-course meal of eggplant parmesan, trofiette pasta with caramelized tomatoes, stracciatella cheese, and pesto and veal loin with crispy potatoes and vegetable ratatouille was served. “A lot of our family and friends said out of all the dishes they ate during their trip, our wedding food was one of their best meals,” reveals Wilson. “Everything was amazing, but my favorite was the eggplant parmesan appetizer. I told Francesca if she didn’t finish hers to not let the waiters clear her plate and of course, she didn’t finish but let them take it.” “Oops!” she acknowledges while going on to talk about the main dessert event. “We also had a big traditional Italian cake called a millefoglie. It was so big, we had no clue how to cut it.” As if that wasn’t impressive enough, the dessert spread was a spectacle in and of itself, “but we never made it to the table,” Wilson regrettably confesses. “Our friends videotaped it and said it was unreal.” “Apparently, there was a dessert that looked like spaghetti.” The night was pure magic, but the party didn’t necessarily stop there. For some guests, their Italian vacation culminated with the wedding night, but for others, this evening was merely the kick-off. “After the wedding, my parents rented a charter bus and about 60ish people went to my dad’s hometown of Pacentro, Italy,” the bride says. “Unfortunately,” Wilson follows up, “we didn’t go because we left that day for our honeymoon, but we heard it was a blast.” The couple honeymooned in Sorrento, where they stayed at the same hotel at which they were also looking to get married. “It’s called the Belleuve Syrene,” shares Wilson. “We also took day trips to Capri and Positano.” Friends and family were vacationing in Sorrento and Positano, so the new Mr. and Mrs. Wilson Ashford relished the opportunity to hang out with some of their guests following the celebration of their marriage. The entire ordeal, from California to Italy, was truly the embodiment of the best of both worlds. When in Rome, do as the LaRoccas and Ashfords do.

SERVICE THE 411 ON GETTING YOUR LIPS DONE Editorial Director Lauren Barisic

In the crusade to achieve the perfect pout, one might wonder where to start. So, if you’re new to medical spa lip treatments, this article is for you. Kiss Me Med Spa’s Karen Tesi, RN, Director of Nursing, is here to introduce and explain the professional practices for those seeking different services to make your pucker all the more kissable. There are many factors to consider when treating lips—age appropriation, filler formula and its amount, picking a provider, desired effects, maintenance, and even treatment-style inclinations. Whatever your preference—from injectables to non-invasive treatments—you’ll be amazed at the various options for lip gurus and novices. Lip filler is perhaps the most universally familiar treatment in lip enhancement, but not all formulas are created or perform equally, as thickness varies greatly. Thus, selecting an age-appropriate filler is the key to natural-looking results. “When we choose a particular brand or type of lip filler, we always look at the rest of the person’s face to see which one is going to be balanced with what we’re already starting with,” Karen explains. For example, for a 75-year-old who has never had any procedures, a less robust product is ideal so that their lips blend into their face. Thicker fillers tend to be well-suited for younger people whose skin and lips are naturally plumper and can support a firmer product.

—49— FEB

I

t’s also vital to use an appropriate amount of filler, which varies from person to person. “It all just depends on the finished look that the patient wants and what we think would look good on them as well.” For the older person just described, as little as half or a third of a syringe may be used. “You definitely don’t want to overfill,” Karen warns. “You can always add more after two or three weeks when it settles in.” Overfilling can lead to problems, such as migration, where the filler extends beyond the lip and winds up settling in the area around the mouth. “There’s no magic border that keeps the filler inside your lips. If you overfill them, they’re going to leak out into the surrounding tissue.” But, filler isn’t the only injectable option for lip rejuvenation. “There’re new products as well that aren’t actually fillers,” Karen shares. “They are considered injectable hydrators, and we can use those in an off-label manner for someone who just has, say, wrinkly lips and doesn’t want filler but would like to do something about those wrinkles. We can inject an injectable hydrator that does a natural plumping.” This is a great solution for anyone with wrinkles or fine lines on their lips. “Even some young people have a lot of wrinkles in their lips and they’re wanting their lips to be smooth—it’s just the texture that they were born with,” Karen reasons out. “Somebody like that might be a good candidate for either one of the very thin fine fillers or even an injectable hydrator.” When you go for a lip consultation, your lips should not be the only part of your face that’s analyzed. Providers must assess all your facial features, such as volume loss, wrinkles, and texture, with due consideration. “We need to take that into account if we are doing some sort of lip augmentation because when we’re finished, we want it to blend with the rest of what you have going on,” Karen says. “And then, of course, what we would want to do, in a perfect world, is get you going on restoring the volume you’ve lost, and get you going on wrinkle treatments and building more collagen so that you look younger instead of just going straight for the lips.” Slow and steady wins the race with all fillers—be patient and accept that it may take a few visits to achieve your desired look. Every person is a special case that must be approached uniquely for not only aesthetic but also health reasons. No two lips are the same, so when determining how much filler to use, it’s tough to give a straight answer. “The young girls who have the big, plumpy, full, overfilled lips, oftentimes they have up to two syringes in there,” Karen details. At Kiss Me, “we will never do more than one syringe at a time because there is a risk to the tissue if you overfill it, such as the possibility of a pressure occlusion, which means that you put so much filler in the lip that the filler makes the lip tissue so tight that it pushes down on the blood supply, basically squishing the veins and the arteries, which can compromise the lip and cut off its blood supply. Safety is number one, and quite frankly, the lip can only handle so much filler.” Then there’s the question of how one goes about selecting a provider. “Reviews are very important and experience—it’s hard for the general public to pick a provider because they don’t know the background, they don’t know how long they’ve been doing it, they don’t know if they’re even good at it,” Karen emphasizes. “At Kiss Me, we do many lip treatments on a daily basis. I think one of the most important things for an injector is to have great mentorship. This will hopefully ensure that treatments are done safely and effectively. Some people tout themselves

as ‘master injectors’. I personally have been injecting for 20 years and have mentored doctors and nurses in the process, so I would be considered a master injector. But I am not aware of a test that you can sit for that gives you that designation. Therefore, oftentimes that title is a self-appointed title.” Generally, the cost of a lip filler procedure differs based on its complexity, but you can expect to pay $450 to $650 for a lip filler session at Kiss Me Med Spa. The cost associated with returning for another session depends greatly on how much filler is needed, but it could be as little as $200 for something like a minor touch-up. Think of it like how one would approach going blond from being brunette—there’s the initial appointment that begins the process before you eventually wind up with the color you want, and then you have to go back to the salon periodically for regrowth touch-ups. “Maintenance is a lot less labor, it’s quicker, it’s less material. It’s the same kind of thing with aesthetics,” Karen explains. “You would do your initial treatment and then you could do your little mini touch-up maintenance every few months.”

T

here are three factors to be aware of when preparing for filler. “Typical preparations are you want to avoid anything that thins your blood, like fish oil, aspirin, ibuprofen or Aleve, alcohol, anything like that, for at least three days before because when your blood is thinner, you have a tendency to bruise more,” Karen advises. “We also like to avoid any kind of dental cleaning or drilling from the dentist 30 days before your filler and also 30 days after your filler. If you have a history of getting cold sores on your lips, or perhaps if you’ve had shingles around your mouth, we would pretreat you with antiviral medication for a few days before getting your lips done as well.” Patients are given topical numbing before injections begin. Even with these precautions, swelling and/or bruising may occur but usually subside within a few days, which is the same estimated timeframe for full recovery. Your provider typically will want to see you two to three weeks later. At that time, “we can tell if there’s a lump or a bump. We can tell if you have a little flat spot that needs to be touched up because when you’re working on the lips, sometimes they start to swell before you’re even finished. And if there’s swelling, it’s kind of hard to continue on. So sometimes we might have to finish up at your follow-up depending on either how much you’re bleeding or how much you’re swelling.” It’ll take two to three weeks for the filler to integrate into the tissue. “So, in our opinion, we always tell people, ‘let’s not judge anything for at least two weeks, preferably three,’” Karen adds. How long do lip fillers last? “The body breaks down filler just like it does calories,” Karen imparts. “Some people have a fast metabolism, and they break down their calories much faster than someone else. It’s the same way with fillers, and it has nothing to do with your weight, how large you are, how skinny you are—your body will just break down the filler at whatever rate it chooses to do.” That’s why providers give an average time when asked how long it lasts. “If you have a complete full lip done, the average is six months. Some people are going to burn through it in four months. Other people are going to burn through it a year or two later. It all just really depends on how fast your body breaks it down and absorbs it.”

U

sing a plumping gloss on your lips is a great way to help maintain your filler results. “You can also come in for a non-injectable lip enhancement with our laser, and it’s called LipLase!” Karen suggests. “This treatment can be a way to maintain by building collagen. It will leave lips plumper regardless of whether you do filler or not, or it can be an alternative to injectables.” LipLase is ideally suited for people who can’t have fillers, anyone with a fear of needles, and those who are wary of foreign substances in their bodies. “If someone is more of a holistic, organic kind of person, then the LipLase treatment is perfect for them.” All things considered, Karen believes, “we have more than one way to get lip goals achieved.” LipLase can be performed with or without topical numbing—it depends on pain tolerance, but a little numbing cream never hurts and only takes about 20 minutes to take effect. The treatment itself takes just a few minutes. The laser passes feel like hot water droplets landing on your lips. You’ll be asked to keep licking your lips between passes since the saliva helps make the laser a bit more comfortable. “It’s a quick little treatment—about 15 minutes,” Karen affirms. “We just laser the inside of your lips and also the outside of your lips. The third step would be to define your vermilion border, which is the area where you would put lip liner. So, if we can strengthen that, we’re building collagen, the lips are naturally being enhanced, and we also help combat vertical rhytids, or smoker’s lines.” Building this stability in the lips helps delay said smoker lines, too, especially when performed in a series of six treatments one month apart. The treatment comes in a package of six, though a single session runs at $250 each. Perfecting your pout is something that takes time, patience, and dedication. Fillers offer more instant and obvious results, while treatments like LipLase help develop lip beauty from the inside out. Then there are the little things anyone can do without going to a medical spa office, such as investing in a great plumping gloss or implementing a home lip routine with scrubs and masks. Whatever your preference and commitment level, don’t be afraid to ask questions. Professionals like Karen at Kiss Me Med Spa are eager to help you look and feel your best at any age. The combined efforts of filler and laser can make anyone appear younger when done correctly, making the road to uber kissable lips only an appointment away. So, pay yourself a little lip service.
