e have a lot to celebrate! The past few months have been a whirlwind of excitement and changes. We are coming off our spring release featuring Lisa Vanderpump, and the support from the community has been overwhelming! We were sold out at many of our local newsstands before April even began, making the spring 2015 edition our top seller to date. I cannot begin to express how grateful I am to every person who picked up a copy. In March Lisa Vanderpump held a fabulous event at PUMP for the magazine release in West Hollywood. Over 150 people came out to show their support for the publication and it was incredible to see so many of our advertisers and readers who attended the celebration in true luxurious fashion, many of them driving several hours to be there. CHERYL ENSOM DACK Cheryl is a copy-editor, mixed-media artist, blogger and mom. In addition to editing for CVLUX, she edits for a small publishing house, teaches sewing classes, and sells her art on etsy, some of which have been featured in Somerset Memories and Somerset Quilting Studio. Her favorite things to do are doing art with her family, thrift store shopping, and creating heirlooms for both family and customers.

MARJAREE’S MARDI GRAS BIRTHDAY BASH Marjaree Mason Center’s annual fundraiser, “Marjaree’s Mardi Gras Birthday Bash,” was held on Saturday, March 14, 2015 at TorNino’s Banquets. More than 400 guests came together to celebrate the life and legacy of the late Marjaree Mason. CVLUX caught up recently with Greer Grammer, daughter of Kelsey Grammer & Barrie Buckner. Following in the footsteps of her famous father, Kelsey Grammer, known for playing Dr. Frasier Crane of Frasier, and Greer’s half-sister, Spencer Grammer, of ABC’s Family’s Greek, Greer is starring in the hit MTV series, Awkward. This highly popular show is entering its fifth season. In 2014 Greer graduated from University of Southern California with a degree in Theater Arts and in 2015 the Hollywood Foreign Press announced she was Miss Golden Globe. This Summer’s viewers will be able to see Greer on Awkward (MTV), as well as Melissa & Joey (ABC). CVLUX: So tell me about your first name. GREER: Well, my Mom loved movies of the 40’s & 50’s. One of her favorite actresses was Greer Garson of the celebrated movie, Mrs. Miniver and Good Bye Mr. Chips. I was named after her. CVLUX: Did you always want to be an actress? GREER: I always wanted to be an actress and to perform. I love watching old movies on Turner Classic Movies, with beautiful actresses whom I admire like Grace Kelley and Audrey Hepburn. I really need to get back to that… I really do love singing and music. CVLUX: You always look stunning when on the red carpet, or wherever. Do you have a stylist or make up person to help you and do you have a favorite designer you like to be seen wearing?

GREER: I have done my makeup and hair for a long time, but now, yes, I do have professional people who help augment my look. I really like the clothes of Allison Ollivier and Ted Baker. CVLUX: What’s the best advice you can give? GREER: Don’t compare yourself to others. There are so many times when I scroll through my Instagram and look at girls in magazines and think, “I’m not pretty enough; I have this; what’s wrong with me; I have that,” and that’s something that I’ve really tried to stop. I used to be a very, very insecure teenager, but I feel like you have to get to this place where you’re okay with who you are… You don’t need to be like everyone else. CVLUX: Is there one person who had the biggest impact on your life? GREER: My parents of course had a huge impact on my life, but honestly, I’d say it would probably have to be my friend who was the nicest, kindest, genuinely good person I’ve ever met and passed away a couple of years ago. It had a huge effect on my life and just really made me realize that I need to live every day, not even to its fullest, but just in a more positive light. CVLUX: What do you think would make the world a better place? GREER: I believe the world would be a lot better if people had more tolerance for one another. Everybody is different… but it’s about toleranceunderstanding that we’re all people at the end of the day, and that that’s all right.

When it comes to celebrity-endorsed products, you can’t help but wonder how legit any of their claims are. Could Katy Perry really be using Covergirl mascara every day in real life, and how often has Sarah Jessica-Parker been leaning over her bathtub rinsing out her Garnier Nutrisse hair dye? Many of us, as consumers, go ahead and take our chances and try a new product if we like the celebrity promoting it. Chances are, however, we’ve probably all learned by now that there’s not always the promised results behind the glowing reviews.

The beauty industry is especially guilty of this marketing tactic, and who can really blame them? How many times have we admired Blake Lively’s hair and wished we knew her inside secret, or been fascinated with the porcelain perfection of Nicole Kidman’s complexion? When these women put their flawless face on a product and claim it really worked for them, it’s not surprising at all to see why these contracts sell products so easily. A few smart celebrities seem to have caught on to this trend. Some of the most beautiful women in the world are taking a more entrepreneurial route, however, rather than simply collecting an easy paycheck from an already-existing skincare company, or signing a complicated contract. Self-produced celebrity cosmetic lines have been on the shelves more than ever lately, so we’ve researched which ones might actually work for you, and which ones you should avoid being fooled by this summer. Cindy Crawford’s relationship to beauty needs no explanation. In 2005 the retired supermodel teamed up with Dr. Sebagh, a French skincare specialist, and formulated her skincare line, Meaningful Beauty. This extremely affordable line of anti-aging products is based around a selfdescribed “Youth Molecule” that Sebagh discovered (named Superoxide Dismutase) that they draw out from what the website vaguely refers to as “a rare melon.”¹ Sebagh tells customers, “It’s been a very difficult process to extract the enzyme from this melon, and we’ve been the first ones to use this melon extract in a very high concentration, which is exclusive to Meaningful Beauty.”¹ The line operates similar to the way Proactiv does; customers are shipped 3-month supplies of five to seven products ranging from cleansers and sunscreens to décolleté treatments. There are promo codes and special offers and even a 60-day money back guarantee, which is comforting, given the highly-mixed reviews from customers who ordered Meaningful Beauty through Amazon. While Crawford says she’s used this anti-aging melon extract for over 20 years, she’s admitted to using Botox and fillers to maintain her appearance, which seems just a little deceptive to us. We suggest you enter your credit card information at your own risk. Another superstar who appears to be an exception to the inevitable effects of aging is Christie Brinkley, the brains and face behind Christie Brinkley Authentic Skincare. Just the fact that she put “authentic” in the title suggests that she understands the consumer who has been duped by celebrity endorsements in the past. Brinkley says on her website, “Authentic skincare is not just another celebrity endorsed skincare line; this is my own brand. I’m personally involved in every step of the process and I proudly stand behind every single product.”² Christie currently offers eight products that are reasonably-priced at a range from $32.95 to $79.95 USD. Unlike other independent ventures Salma Hayek chose to team up with CVS pharmacy in 2011 to create a line called Nuance Beauty. The diverse product line has been wildly popular with drugstore beauty shoppers and to the La Mer-loving woman, it almost seems too good to be true. The products in Hayek’s line are of higher quality than their outdated Neutrogena drugstore counterparts that may have pushed you to try a more expensive product in the first place. Some of her best selling products are a dark cacao and coffee “Firming Body Cream,” “AM/PM Anti-Aging Eye Serum,” and a “Blackcurrant Intense Hydration Hair Mask.” With names and ingredients like that, who wouldn’t want to try them out? 24 CV LUXURY

In contrast to partnerships celebrities form with already-existing cosmetics companies, Salma insists she’s taken a leading role in its creation from start to finish. She told USA Today, “I’ve been working on this for years. I burn my face, my eyes, trying this ****. I have very sensitive skin. The stuff is really, really, really good.”³ How can you not love Salma’s sincerity and dedication to her product? With a wide variety of options (skin, body, hair, and makeup) and an insanely low price point ($2.99-$19.99), we’re ready to reconsider the notion that you always get what you pay for. If any American star could release a trio of skincare products launched exclusively in Japan and be a success, it would be Madonna. Marketing Japan’s dual obsession with skincare and the original Material Girl, it’s no surprise that MDNA was a smart product to put into existence,released with an edgy and mysterious launch video featuring the one and only queen, of course. Madonna and her team worked with Japan’s leading beauty company MTG to create three separate products to form a system that promises results. And no, they are not even close to your average cleanser/cream combo. The skin rejuvenator is actually an electronic device which uses magnetic force to draw out impurities while simultaneously using what they call “deep derma induction” to enhance beauty nutrients. You can own this experimental invention if you happen to be shopping in Japan for 58,000 yen, which is roughly $482 USD.



The kit comes with their second product, the “Chrome Clay Mask.” Made with clay found in an Italian spa town, Montecatini Terme, the mask promises “even textured, flawless and glowing skin,” according to the company.4 Sold separately is a serum which is made from vitamins, botanicals, and... you guessed it... the very essence of Madonna herself. Priceless, no? If you shop at Sephora then you’ve probably seen or heard about the Argan-oil line, Josie Maran. What most people don’t know is that founder Maran was a former actress and model for companies such as Guess, Glamour, Sports Illustrated, and one-day competitor, Maybelline. While Maran doesn’t name names specifically, she says on her website, “I worked with some of the world’s best makeup artists. The more I learned about toxic chemicals in most cosmetics, the more I wondered: did beauty have to be bad for us?”5 In 2007 Maran made her curiosity a reality and her company was up and running. The company now offers a wide variety of products, always with a similar baseline: 100% organic fair trade Argan oil as the main ingredient. From cleansers to lipsticks, her products are not made for those who typically opt for oil-free products. However, Maran insists that even those with oily or acne-prone skin will benefit from the effects of Argan Oil. Celebrities make the best spokespeople for a ton of reasons, but in the beauty industry their looks play a huge role in just how persuasive they can be. With photo editing programs and cosmetic procedures available, it’s important not to take any claims too seriously or to project celebrities’ experiences onto yourself. Regardless of who you are taking your beauty suggestions from, something important to look at is the lifestyle of the person giving advice. Great skin reflects a healthy way of life and celebrities can’t afford to fall off their game. They have an advantage simply because they’ve had to pay close attention to their beauty routines their whole life. I hate to say most celebs are probably much more self-disciplined then we are ... so let’s indulge ourselves and test their products out, but also follow their lead in working toward an increasingly healthy and balanced lifestyle.

Like most women I know, I’ve been ridding myself of body hair since junior high and no matter how flat my stomach gets at the gym, or how amazing that little sundress looks, it would be an absolute waste if I paired it with… wait for it… furry legs. This year I decided to be more proactive, and at least knock one of the most time-consuming portions of my Summer hygiene out. This year, I would say goodbye to follicular growth, shaving incidents and hot strips of wax… permanently. Laser hair removal isn’t new to the market, but it’s permanent and involves hot lasers, so clearly it is unnerving, and if you haven’t experienced it, you’re likely to have a few questions to ask. First and foremost, does it hurt? Is it really going to leave you hair-free forever? How do you go about getting it— a doctor’s office, or an at-home device? If the goal is to be unchained from your shaving routine this summer, now’s the time to start, and this should help you decide if laser hair removal is an option you’d like to consider.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW Laser hair removal is a treatment that uses heat to destroy the roots of hair underneath the skin’s surface. It takes a series of treatments to accomplish the feat and even then the FDA has pointed out that manufacturers are not allowed to claim that laser hair removal is neither painless or permanent.¹ What? Isn’t that the point… to rid yourself of the problem forever? The answer is, for the most part. Of course there a variety of reasons, but it’s not an exact science. The general consensus seems to be that you’ll eliminate a significant majority of hair growth but whether it is from aging or hormone changes, years down the road, new hair can pop up, and periodic maintenance treatments may be needed. Why then do you still see spa’s marketing the procedure as “permanent?” That would be because the FDA did give a green light to qualifying laser manufacturers to use the word “permanent”, but only in conjunction with the word “reduction.” “…manufacturers may not claim that laser hair removal is either painless or permanent unless the FDA deter mines that there are sufficient data to demonstrate such results. Several manufacturers received FDA permission to claim, ‘permanent reduction,’ NOT ‘permanent removal’ for their lasers,” says the FDA. Further, they explain how to find out if any device that you might be considering for purchase has been approved by the FDA.¹ WHAT EXACTLY LASERS DO Laser hair removal, according to The American Society of Plastic Surgeons, is described as: “… a non-invasive technique that uses highly concentrated light to penetrate hair follicles. The intense heat of the laser damages the hair follicle to inhibit future hair growth.”² Sounds scary, but it’s not. Hallelujah… technology has come light-years since the first hair-removing laser. New machines can effectively remove hair with minimal pain, even utilizing cooling features and the newest technology works on all skin tones. PROFESSIONAL VS. AT-HOME There’s a reason why they are called professionals. I have a philosophy in life—leave the specialties to the specialists. To be fair, I do know plenty of healthy people ready for the challenge of some DIY experimenting, but personally speaking, I get a little apprehensive when it comes to wielding a hot beam of light at myself. I can see it becoming like a piece of at-home gym equipment: admired from afar. Unfortunately though, like most dermatological procedures, going to a med spa for laser hair removal has that not-so-appealing

part: the Neiman Marcus-esque price tag. Sessions are typically divided into areas, which in turn can cost hundreds per spot— per visit. Holy moly. Enter: at-home laser hair removal. Bringing the results of office visits at a much cheaper price, at-home laser hair works in the same way—an ultramodern looking device emits a hot light, targeting your hair follicle, calling off new hair growth. That part is pretty black and white. Unfortunately though, there are no real studies out there comparing the effectiveness between the two. If you chose the “do it yourself” method, make sure you take the time to research the products out there and remember—you do have to do it to yourself. Consistently. There are a couple options to keep in mind when you start looking for your device. First of all, it goes without saying that Tria® has to be the most recognizable name. It’s a little more pricey but it’s the only FDA-cleared DIY hair removal system that uses a diode laser, which happens to be the identical laser your med spa would use. Other options might be the Remington i-Light Pro which uses IPL (Intense Pulsed Light similar effects, but not a real laser) or the Silk’n Flash&Go Freedom Hair Removal Device, which uses HPL (Home Pulsed Light), and the product’s website explains the benefits, which include a wide spectrum of wavelengths, larger spot size, and lower pain levels.³ DOES IT HURT? How do I put this? Most describe it as being snapped with a rubber band, which is pretty annoying but tolerable. From my experience I can tell you that it 100% depends on the area. The general rule of thumb is the less fatty the area, the more sensitive. The good news is patients can apply numbing cream beforehand, or like I tried, a little ice-application. After the treatment slap on a little hydrocortisone cream or aloe, and you’re good to go. The laser may leave the area pinkish, which should go away after an hour or so. Bottom line, ladies: if you can handle waxing, this should be a piece of cake. HOW OFTEN Did I not mention that this is a long term commitment? Every person is different, but for in-office visits you can expect to need a package, maybe two. Packages usually are a series of between six and eight treatments to get rid of most of the hair; the more hair you have, the more treatments you’ll need. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons explains that because laser hair removal only affects actively growing hair follicles², it may take several laser hair removal treatments to provide significant hair reduction. Most professionals recommend scheduling visits every six to eight weeks, and while it’s not going to disrupt anything if your schedule varies once in a while, it will help you get better results by hitting the hair in the growth cycles.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Of course there is prep, but thankfully, it’s easy. There are just a few rules to follow when starting this process:

You should start noticing a reduction of hair growth after a couple treatments. In other words, your razor is going to be entering a dry spell. Just keep in mind that even though old hair removal techniques are becoming a distant memory, if you want to see complete results, it still takes dedication. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons note that because hair grows in cycles, it typically takes three to four laser hair removal treatments to provide significant hair reduction.²

-Sun exposure and sunless tanners are off limits when you are using laser hair removal systems. The laser tar gets the follicle more effectively when there is a contrast between your hair and skin. -No waxing once you start the series. The hair follicle has to be intact in order for the laser to work -Shave the day of the procedure, as close to laser time as possible. The less hair that is on the surface of the skin, t he better the laser can focus on finding the follicle.

IS IT WORTH IT? Really?!? A life-changing experience freeing you from hair that we should have evolved past growing? I would trade in shaving and waxing for a few zaps any day. Can I get an amen?

At 23, Ugo Mozi is one of the top stylists in the world; I say this because when he’s not busy hanging out in Dubai with Balmain designer, Olivier Rousteing, and vacationing with supermodels, he’s styling Justin Bieber full-time. His resume is pretty impressive for only being 23: he has styled and worked with the likes of Chris Brown, Beyoncé, Larry King and wife, Shawn King, just to name a few. No stranger to mixing textures and fabrics within one outfit, Ugo knows all about luxe fabrics, fur, suede, and leather, which sheds some light on Bieber’s new street luxe look.

CVLUX: Didn’t you used to model? How did you make that transition from being a model to a stylist?

When I reached out to Ugo and quickly received a reply back, I was shocked. After all, I wasn’t sure this world-renown stylist and designer would even see the email, but his response time surprised me even more. Lucky for me, my email caught his attention, and he agreed to allow me to interview him. I must admit that I was a little nervous at first; I mean, this is the stylist of some of the most influential celebrities in pop culture and social media stars on “Man Crush Mondays.”

Ugo: I love Thierry Mugler, Maison Martin Margiela, and Gareth Pugh. Although my favorite designer list changes periodically these three inspire me on a daily basis. And I love their aesthetics, and besides producing amazing fashion shows every season, their originality is undeniable.

Ugo: I originally started out as a model/actor, which made me appreciate that side of the industry and also gave me my first insider perspective on how things are done. Although my modeling career was short, I learned a lot about the production side of fashion and also got bit by the styling bug. CVLUX: Who are your favorite designers, and why?

CVLUX: What fashion trends DON’T you like?

CVLUX: How long have you been a stylist?

Ugo: I DON’T like any fashion trends. I love to see originality and personality in the streets. I understand trends are cool and sometimes you don’t even know you are following a trend. But overall I appreciate when I see people embodying their own character and personality, allowing it to show in their everyday wardrobe.

Ugo: I’ve been styling for about 7 years now.

CVLUX: Do you have any favorite brands?

CVLUX: How did you become a celebrity stylist?

Ugo: Myself. I am my own favorite brand. I have so much more confidence and appreciation for my ensemble when I design and create it myself.

CVLUX: Where are you from? Ugo: I was born in Nigeria and reared in Los Angeles and Texas.

Ugo: My intentions and focus was never to be a stylist, and a celebrity stylist as that. Although I enjoyed fashion-editorials and high fashion work, I didn’t consider it until my first celebrity client reached out to me for a job and more job offers came in.

CVLUX: Do you have any one who you look up to or admire in the fashion industry? Ugo: Karl Lagerfeld. CVLUX: Do you have any fashion icons? Ugo: Michael Jackson is the number one fashion icon! No need to add anything after. CVLUX: What are your favorite vintage pieces? Ugo: My mink trench coat. CVLUX: Any style advice you follow or can give? Ugo: I would advise everyone to do their research before embarking on anything. There are so many things in this industry you have no clue about. Master the business side as well as the creative side because they go hand in hand. CVLUX: What inspired you to start a clothing line? Ugo: Quinn Aston and I created Aston Mozie six years ago. We began by making clothes for ourselves, to be different, and we eventually ended up selling some. We showed our first collection during New York Fashion Week in February 2010. We were both really influenced by our childhood. Growing up in the suburbs, there weren’t many options in shopping or fashion, so we had no choice but to create our own clothes.

CVLUX: How was your experience when you did Fashion Week in 2010?

CVLUX: Where is your favorite place to travel to and Why?

Ugo: It was phenomenal. After being in New York for only six months, the line was received very well. Although I have grown so much from February 2010, that experience was life-changing for me. I realized that people were really interested in seeing what I had to offer. It was surreal.

Ugo: Nigeria- I love everything about there. It’s incredibly refreshing. The lifestyle, fashion, and the people always take my mind places it can never go if I was anywhere else.

CVLUX: If you could be an animal, what animal would you be, and why?

Ugo: A perfect day for me would begin with taking my little brother and sisters out to a theme park early in the morning, and coming back home in time to take my mother shopping and watch sports with my dad. CVLUX: What’s something that would surprise most people about you?

Ugo: I would be a white lion. I feel like I can relate a lot to them. Such a physically strong and beautiful animal. The rare white symbolizes its innocence and purity. They can kill in an instant and go after what they want. CVLUX: If you could meet anyone (dead or alive) who would it be? Ugo: Michael Jackson. CVLUX: What are your favorite genres of music? Ugo: Soft rock, Pop, R & B, and Rap. CVLUX: What do you do for fun when you’re not working?

CVLUX: What would be the perfect day for you?

Ugo: I’m a very shy, non-confrontational person. If it comes down to it, I let people have it. But I usually have my manager do all the yelling for me on sets. CVLUX: Any questions you wish we would have asked? Ugo: Nope. I enjoyed the interview. Definitely a pleasure!

“ I have had a dream since I was a kid to bring commerce back to Ohio...”

Whatever your definition of success, Monica Potter has achieved it. From humble beginnings in Ohio, Monica has become a Hollywood actress, producer, entrepreneur, designer, decorator, wife, Browns fan, homemaker and (very) amateur bowler. She also tells CV Lux about her favorite title— “Mom”—and her days on the beloved sitcom, Parenthood. CVLUX: You were simply amazing in Parenthood. How much are you missing your television family? MP: I miss them so much every day. I told my husband the other day I had dreams about everyone—I think it is starting to hit me now because we are not seeing each other. Also, being so busy traveling for my company, and now that I am able to hand things off to my girls in Ohio, I just miss being with them, chatting with them and working with them. We really are a tight, close-knit family. CVLUX: The relationships within Parenthood were so real, and so many people could relate to their own families, if not wish for a family like the Bravermans. The conversations seemed so real and authentic. Were they all scripted or did you ever get to improvise? MP: Yes, it was scripted, but we always ad-libbed everything, which was so great. As I am developing a new show, everything is so different. I am still going to try and bring the Parenthood style into our new show, if they will let me. In the big family scenes, after a few seasons, even if I had dialogue, I would sort of sit back and be quiet and eat because it was so hard to get a word in edgewise. By the end of Season 3 when I was pregnant on the show (not in real life), I had gained 12 pounds because I was eating in every scene! CVLUX: Since Parenthood ended, have you managed to stay in touch with any of your cast mates? If so, who? Who are you closest to? MP: We all sort of stay in touch, but I am really in touch with a lot of the kids. My daughter, Molly, has play dates with them on weekends or they come over to the house. Savannah, Tyree, the twins—Mia and Ella—Mae and Miles, and I text Peter and Lauren often. Craig T. Nelson and Bonnie Bedelia just sent me a beautiful letter, so yes, we do all stay in touch in some way.

Tyree, who played Jabbar on the show, will be playing my son on my new half hour pilot for NBC! I said to the other producer (as I am also producing), do you think that will help or hurt? We agreed that it didn’t matter as we thought he would be the best fit to play my son with second ex-husband, Donald Faison. It should be very fun and interesting, with a little Parenthood magic, as well. CVLUX: With so many family shows on primetime TV, what made Parenthood so magical? MP: Everything you saw on screen was really happening; nothing was ever forced and the cameras were just an afterthought. Even when the director said, “Rolling,” we didn’t even pay attention— it was very natural. CVLUX: Your diagnosis with breast cancer was definitely such an important performance and message. Did the writers create that storyline, or did you suggest it? Did you know the outcome of your disease while playing the part? If so, how did you stay in the moment? MP: I went for my first mammogram at 39, and they saw something on the screen. I had to wait and in that time I was freaking out. I immediately called our Creator/Producer/Writer, Jason Katims, because I was worried that if I might go through this in real life, maybe we should bring it to the screen. He told me he couldn’t believe I was saying this, as they were just going to announce the story line of Kristina getting breast cancer. Jason’s wife had gone through breast cancer, so a lot of things that you saw on the show happened in his life. At the time of playing the role, I was offered a lot of information, but I purposely didn’t want to know anything and I did not know the outcome as I was playing the role. CVLUX: What is your favorite Parenthood moment, and why? MP: There are so many, but there are two that really stick out. One was with Max, when he asked Kristina how to dance. The other was when we picked up Max from his camping trip and I got in the back seat with him. These were scenes with no words, nor did they need any.

CVLUX: After appearing in Con Air and Patch Adams, as well as doing a six-year TV series, what is your heart’s desire to do in the future? MP: This is going to sound so corny, but in the job that I have, I just want to relate to people, as I do in my real life. Whether it’s through being emotional or happy—to just tell stories and feel, express and connect. Just as in Parenthood, in my new show, I want to make sure there is a connection that’s grounded, with a foundation and a real core of being aware of yourself in your real life and the acting world. But I also want to have FUN! I like laughing and that is why I am so excited about this pilot. I want to laugh! CVLUX: Who is co-producing your new pilot? Can you tell us anything about it? Is it family-friendly? Comedy? Who is in it? MP: Ellen DeGeneres and I are producing it together, and I hope it’s family-friendly! The network is NBC and the studio is Warner Bros. When I started taking meetings last June, I sat down with 10 groups of writers, executives and big powerful people and I said, “Here’s what’s missing on TV: a show like Parenthood in the half-hour world.” The shows I really miss watching are the shows that my daughter, Molly, and I could watch together, like Full House, All In The Family, Good Times, or Roseanne. My biggest fear is that I am not a “sitcom girl” and I don’t talk really fast. I said to the writer, we need to discuss what your thoughts are because she speaks very quickly and I don’t. A good friend of mine who is an actor gave me some very good advice. 46 CV LUXURY

She said you cannot fit into the mold they want because you might be doing it for 10 years and you will be miserable. However, the writers that we do have know my voice so well and they keep telling me to stop worrying! The funny part is that I have three ex-husbands, so that alone is funny: Eddie Cibrian, Donald Faison and Rory Scovel. CVLUX: Growing up in Cleveland, Ohio, what led you into acting? MP: I wanted to be an actress since I was three, or a nun. I grew up in a Catholic family and went to a Catholic school—I liked the order. I have three sisters and I liked the “sisterhood.” I loved their outfits. It was easy and sensible. You go to your closet and you pull it out and you are done. My parents were my biggest support and my dad always told me that he wanted me to go to Hollywood and become a big star. I didn’t know exactly what that meant, but I knew I wanted to do it. I was a weird kid. I liked to be alone a lot and pack a lunch and sit by this lilac tree that was in our field in the summertime and just dream. I was a dreamer. I did take the bus downtown and do modeling and local commercials. At 18, I got married and had my first son, Danny. We moved to Chicago, then Miami and, in 1993, we moved to LA where I got a job on a soap opera, The Young and the Restless. Actually, Eddie Cibrian was on with me, so we are both coming full circle. On that soap, I was horrible! You really have to know what you are doing and it is the hardest thing in the world to do! I was so bad—I got fired, and then found out I was pregnant with Liam at 23 years old. We were poor and used WIC to buy groceries, but that time also holds the best memories for me.



CVLUX: You were inspired to open your first store in Cleveland that sells handcrafted goods for the home and body. What are some of the products? MP: It didn’t matter where we lived: when my boys were little, I always wanted to make a house a home—even if we were travelling, or in a hotel room. I wanted them to have a sense of comfort and to feel warm, protected and taken care of. All of the products in our line convey that message. I’m so proud that we work with local artisans and crafters and I design most of the products with them. We are also moving into wellness for the body that I am very excited about! It’s all natural and the wellness line will be organic One of the products we will feature is “Molly’s Dream Cream,” which is a very rich lotion that is mixed with lavender and Vitamin E. I make it at home myself to use on her, and when the boys were little, I made them “Dream Spray,” that is lavender-based. We also have a lavender hand-aid, which is one of our top sellers! We have bath sachets, Epsom salts, Himalayan sea salt, soaks... luxury things that I use every day. CVLUX: How exciting was it to return to your hometown and create new jobs? MP: We have family and friends that are helping run the business. I have had a dream since I was a kid to bring commerce back to Ohio, because we didn’t grow up with abundance. I can remember my dad taking us out to buy a Christmas tree and he didn’t have any money. He tried to give the guy his Swiss Army knife so that he could get a tree, and the guy said no. We went home without a tree. The next day, our church found out and brought us a Christmas tree. I’m so happy that I can now give back in the way of jobs in our community. CVLUX: Now that you are living in LA, what are some of your favorite things to do on the weekend? MP: I like to hike at Fryman Canyon in Studio City, and then go to the beach. CVLUX: What is your favorite restaurant right now? MP: “Antonio’s” Italian restaurant, in Studio City. They have a pasta dish named Pasta Monica that has any pasta you want with a meat sauce that has garlic, onions, basil and oregano. Just awesome and it reminds me of a sauce that my grandfather made. CVLUX: Do you have a guilty pleasure? MP: The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and Ru Paul’s Drag Race.

I arrived at Malibu Colony around four p.m. and was greeted at the entrance by a very serious security brief. After finding parking in the colony among an array of exotic car imports I walked up to the hidden entrance to the house and entered into a different world, far away from the typical Malibu image I had held in my head. In the kitchen I enthusiastically helped pound chicken breasts for the picatta we would all later enjoy, while other family friends set the table and poured each other more wine. At a table set for 15 we talked enthusiastically over each other about politics, Los Angeles, and the heyday of the Film industry that Frank helped pioneer. Speaking about a love for entertaining, we can’t imagine spending a summer in Malibu without throwing a few parties to be talked about for the rest of the year. Frank’s daughter Betsy was born on the Fourth of July and the family has thrown a massive celebration on the holiday ever since. Malibu is noted for it’s outrageous Fourth of July parties in general and it’s not unlikely for celebrity neighbors to let the parties mesh into one large party on the beach. Betsy’s favorite celebrity guest was Jim Carrey who made her birthday unforgettable one year, although we won’t say how. No matter how stunning the house, the most important asset is beach access. Davis’s home is directly on the beach, so much so that you could throw a rock into the water from half of the rooms in the house. The patio is the most spectacular feature of the house which was built with two levels and two different viewpoints of the Pacific Coast sunset. Adobe clay tiles and native succulent plants fit the down-to-earth family perfectly and align with the overall attitude of the city of Malibu: being at the top without trying too hard.

Oh, let me sing the praises of cool and crisp leafy greens on a hot and sultry summer’s day in the Central Valley. When the temperature soars–as it surely will–the thought of cranking up the oven and warming the kitchen can feel cruel and unusual. The perfect solution lays in building a fabulous salad as the backbone of your meal. The combinations and creativity are endless. The payback is a bowl of color and healthy goodness to tame that summer sizzle. I am a salad kind of gal. In fact, a dinner without a bowl of chilled, crisp leafy greens, studded with a few salad fixin’s, all pulled together with a vinaigrette just isn’t my idea of a meal. Salad shines at my dinner table nearly 365 days a year, and most times it’s on the menu at lunch, as well. It’s a good time to be a salad lover. Once upon a time–and not all that long ago–a salad started with a shrink-wrapped globe of iceberg lettuce, which was the popular green choice in the produce aisle. It was destined for a dousing of pickledominated Thousand Island dressing, a nubbin of a canned beet, some sprinkles from a can of good, old-fashioned Bacon Bits, and garnished with a smattering of packaged croutons. Salad lovers rejoice! Today’s produce aisle or farmer’s market is a virtual cornucopia of greens, vegetables, fruits and nuts, all must-haves in building nutritious, delicious salads. You will always find the old standards like romaine, butter and iceberg lettuces, but the array of available greens is ever-expanding. The once humdrum “lettuce” selection now stars nutrient–laden, and even organic, varieties of escarole, watercress, arugula, chicory, kale, chard, mache, purslane, beet greens, to name just a few.

There isn’t much sacred territory when it comes to add-ins for a salad, so my advice is to be as fearless as you dare. Tomatoes and cukes are obvious additions to any leafy greens (yawn!). Resolve to turn over a new leaf, and resist the rut.

until you make a salad, the rot may well have spread throughout the head.

Some of my finest salad moments have come from scouring my produce bin and then making good use of some leftover steak cooked to medium-rare perfection, or spontaneously adding a strip of cold, delicately-poached pink salmon. First think inside your produce drawer. Experiment with fresh raspberries, diced jicama, ruby red grapefruit sections, shaved fennel, sliced pear, halved grapes of any hue or some roasted beets.

Dirty and gritty greens are huge salad spoilers. Wet greens will ruin a salad, as well. Your carefully-made dressing will slip right off the wet leaves and taste diluted. A salad spinner is the best kitchen tool you can use in preparing the ideal salad.

Part of rethinking salads as meals is to begin thinking outside your produce drawer. Try crumbled (real!) bacon, artichoke hearts, toasted or sliced almonds, raisins, black beans, salty pepitas, diced hard-boiled eggs, toasting yesterday’s baguette into crispy croutons, flaky Italian tuna or (one of my favorites) grated frozen Gorgonzola cheese. This is a chance to be creative, use what you have, and learn what you most enjoy. Begin with fresh and fabulous greens, add some creative additions, and your salad is halfway to the table. That said, dressing a salad can be the danger zone. There is nothing worse than soggy greens swimming in a pool of viscous and artificially-flavored salad dressing. No pretense here; I am a dressing snob. Homemade is the way to go, and preparing your own dressing is inexpensive and much healthier. My everyday go-to is a formula, not a recipe. I use a ratio of 3 parts oil to 1 part acidic-based ingredient, such as cider vinegar or citrus juice. A classic start to vinaigrette is some finely minced shallot, a couple of teaspoons of Dijon mustard, a pinch of salt and a grind of the pepper mill. Then add the acidic-based ingredient of your choice. Let the vinaigrette “starter” and the acid rest for a moment. This will mellow the shallot and dissolve the salt. Then slowly add in the oil–using a fork or a whisk to mix–gently coaxing the acid and oil to mix. With a light hand, pour the dressing around the outside of the salad bowl. Use a pair of tongs and gently toss. Just as in life–it is better to underdress! Beware the pool of dressing at the bottom of the salad bowl, and keep in mind that properly-dressed greens should just glisten. You can always add more vinaigrette after you season with kosher salt and freshlyground pepper. Preparing a show-stopping salad isn’t at all difficult, but there are a few overall guidelines that will guarantee your mastery of the art of salad. SHOP WITH CARE Keep in mind that most greens have a short shelf life, so choosing this building block of your salad should be done carefully. Pick healthy greens with stems and roots if you can. They will stay fresher longer. Skip over any that show signs of decay, as it tends to spreads quickly. Pre-washed greens in convenience packaging have the shortest life of all. If you see any decay when you get your greens home, pick out the offenders immediately. If you wait

To store the greens for up to a week, roll them in paper towels and place them in a large, zippered plastic bag in the refrigerator. Greens should be stored in the crisper drawer of your refrigerator, where the humidity is highest. LAST-MINUTE IS GOOD Washing and drying lettuce in advance is a great idea. Tearing lettuce in advance is not. Tearing the leaves too far ahead leads to oxidation and browning in delicate greens. Bite-sized pieces are best; salad should not be a fork and knife challenge. Gather all the wonderful elements for your salad and put them on the countertop. Pull your greens from the refrigerator right before you intend to serve them. I like to use a very large bowl to toss my salad, insuring all of the elements are “well-dressed.” The best salad “tossers” ever invented are a pair of clean hands, but a big pair of tongs is a close second. Lightly dress your salad and toss. Season with kosher salt and freshly ground pepper and toss again. A few of my favorite “go-to” summer salads, and directions for some of my favorite toppings, should help you get started, but feel free to substitute other ingredients. Taste and fine-tune to taste… remember, your perfect salad awaits.


STEAK SALAD WITH ARUGULA AND BLUE CHEESE (for 6-8) A sophisticated-tasting, but simple salad, delicious when paired with your favorite wine 1 flank steak, trimmed (room temperature) Kosher salt and freshly ground black pepper 16 oz baby arugula 1 pint (2 cups) cherry tomatoes, halved Pickled red onions (recipe follows) Mustard Vinaigrette (recipe follows) 4 oz blue cheese, crumbled Liberally salt and pepper flank steak. Fire up your BBQ and grill for 3-4 minutes per side. Another option is to slip steak under the broiler on a foil-lined half sheet pan, broiling 3-4 minutes per side and turning steak at the halfway point. Let rest for 10 minutes and then thinly slice against the grain. Set aside in the refrigerator. When ready to serve, toss arugula and tomatoes with 1-2 tbsp. of the vinaigrette, and salt and pepper to taste. Arrange dressed greens on each plate, top with steak and drizzle with dressing. Top with a few pickled red onions and crumbled blue cheese. Serve with additional dressing, if desired.

Mustard Vinaigrette 1 tbsp. coarse ground Dijon mustard 2 tbsp. red wine vinegar 1/2 tsp. Worcestershire sauce 1 tsp. honey 1/3 cup extra-virgin olive oil Whisk ingredients together in a small bowl. Season to taste with salt and pepper. Pickled Red Onions 4 tbsp. red wine vinegar 2 tbsp. honey 1 ½ cups water 1 tsp. kosher salt ½ tsp. freshly ground black pepper 1 medium red onion, halved and thinly sliced Bring vinegar, honey, water, salt and pepper to boil in a small saucepan. Remove from heat and add onion. Let cool, cover and refrigerate 3-4 hours. Drain before serving.


SPICY CHICKEN, AVOCADO AND MANGO SALAD (for 6-8) A salad rich with zesty flavors and textures: perfect for a light summer meal 2 tbsp. brown sugar ¼ cup fresh lime juice 1 - 2 tbsp. chili-garlic sauce ¼ cup vegetable oil Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper 2 tbsp. mayonnaise 1 tsp. Dijon mustard 3 large skinless, boneless chicken breasts* 1 ripe mango, peeled and cut into ½ inch chunks 1 ripe avocado, peeled and cut into ½ inch chunks 3 green onions Spring Mix or Baby Spinach With a whisk combine brown sugar and lime juice. Whisk in chili sauce, oil, salt and pepper. Heat a gas grill to medium high. In a mixing bowl, combine the mayonnaise, mustard, 1/2 tsp. salt, and 1/4 tsp. pepper. Add the chicken and toss to coat. Over indirect heat, grill until wellmarked and cooked through, 4 to 6 minutes per side. Let cool and shred. HEIRLOOM TOMATOES WITH GREEN OLIVE TAPENADE (for 4) Go wild with the fabulous colors and tastes of summer’s tomatoes. This vibrant salad is about eye candy and flavor. Tapenade ½ cup green olives with pimentos 1 clove garlic ¼ cup Italian parsley 1 tbsp. each of fresh thyme and fresh oregano ½ cup extra-virgin olive oil 4 tbsp. white balsamic vinegar Juice of one lemon Process olives, garlic and herbs in the bowl of a food processor. Add olive oil, vinegar and lemon and blend until smooth. Can be made ahead and refrigerated. Salad 3-4 ripe heirloom tomatoes 15-18 yellow pear tomatoes 1 English cucumber, seeded and cut in small batons ½ red onion, thinly sliced, soaked in icy water and drained 1 tbsp. good extra-virgin olive oil Kosher salt and freshly ground pepper ½ cup basil leaves, chiffonade 1 cup cubed feta Arrange tomatoes on salad plate along with cucumber and onion. Drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with salt and pepper. Lightly sprinkle with olive tapenade. Scatter feta and basil leaves over the tomatoes.

In a large salad bowl, mix the chicken, mango, avocado and green onions. Add greens and toss gently. Add dressing (you will have some leftover), adjust seasonings to taste and serve. *Really hot outside? No need to raise the temperature. Pick up a whole roast chicken at the grocery store. Remove the skin and bones and shred.

Outside of the craziness of Coachella and Stage Coach, Ritz Carlton Rancho Mirage has some of my favorite California views. The beautiful juxtaposition of desert and mountains affords a unique and distinct sunset that I never get tired of. Speaking of being tired, after a long day of golf, my favorite thing to do while at The Ritz Carlton is to visit the spa, which embodies the pure essence of Palm Springs, with its natural rock terraces and tranquility pool. RANCHO VALENCIA

PELICAN HILL

Rancho Valencia is the perfect destination for an array of clientele. I would love to go on a girl’s getaway here, where we can utilize the perfect spa, a session in the yoga pavilion and cocktails in The Pony Room (the staff outfits are amazing!). But I would prefer to travel with my significant other and enjoy lounging in our stunning casita with private patio and Jacuzzi. There are too many options for this romantic, subtle, fairytalelike oasis in the picturesque canyons of Southern California.
