Director : Satyajit Ray - India Cinema Obscura has chosen Satyajit Ray’s masterpiece as its tribute to the 100th birthday of Indian cinema. A film star (Uttam Kumar) is forced to travel on a train to an awards ceremony. He finds the company of the attractive editor of a new women’s magazine (Sharmila Tagore) a welcome distraction from the attentions of the other passengers. Her lack of “awe” draws unguarded disclosures from the star, providing her with the scoop which would launch her magazine. Shot in stylish black and white, this film shows Ray’s debt to classic French cinema.

Director: Abderrahmane Sissako - Mali The International Monetary Fund and World Bank are put on trial in a courtyard close to the home of a Malian couple. The marriage of lounge singer Mele (Aissa Maiga) and husband Chaka (Tiecoura Traore) is similarly on the rocks. In the “court room” ordinary Malians explain how their lives have been shaped by the crippling debts the African continent can never repay. This satiric comedy creatively tackles world debt from an emerging world perspective.
