Either way, Bumpfizzle’s confusion at Earthling behaviours, as reported in his diary and his frequent reports back to Plonk, are hilarious, and his adventures are ridiculous, from eating the cat’s food (it makes him throw up, always good for attention) to biting his teacher (to check if humans would make a good source of food for Plonkers) and attempting to sacrifice a goat (he soon discovers what goats’ horns are for).

This must be a very important number because they put it everywhere, even on their food. Not happy with that, they then made a ceremonial fire on top of the cake and sang to the number. Very strange.

Patricia Forde lives in Galway. She has published six books for children, and written two plays, as well as several television drama series for children and teenagers. She has worked as a writer on both English and Irish language soap operas. In another life, she was a primary school teacher and the artistic director of Galway Arts Festival.

Illustrator Biography Elīna Brasliņa (1988) is an illustrator from Latvia.

She has illustrated thirteen titles, most of them children’s books and young adult novels. Elīna’s work has been nominated for local awards and the Kate Greenaway Medal, and she has twice received the Zelta Ābele Award for Book Design, as well as the Jānis Baltvilks Baltic Sea Region Award (2017).

Ella and Johnny are distraught when Johnny’s horse Storm disappears from his field. Johnny knows that he has been taken by ‘the pound man’. The horse pound’s job is to round up neglected or feral horses and put them down, but Storm doesn’t come into that category. This is plain stealing, and prejudice against his Traveller family.

Paula Leyden won the Éilís Dillon award for her first children’s novel The Butterfly Heart, which is set in Zambia; its sequel, The Sleeping Baobab Tree, won the Children’s Books Ireland Judges Special Award. She lived in Kenya, Zambia and South Africa before moving to Kilkenny, where she now works extensively with the Travelling community and horses.

Ella, Johnny and Ella’s granny aren’t going to let Storm go that easily. They round up the evidence and set off to the pound, where they confront the officials with proof that Storm was not wandering the roads causing mayhem and endangering the traffic, but is a well-cared-for animal who was snatched from a field. The pound officials try to bluff their way out of the situation, but Johnny goes snooping about and discovers where Storm is being kept. Together, the children stage a dramatic rescue.

Esper and Starn are twin boys who live in a grim world that has been almost laid waste by massive volcanic explosions. When the boys discover an intriguing old manuscript in a locked room in their apartment, which tells of gold on one of the forbidden islands the people can see from the coastline, they determine to go on gold-hunt.

They manage to construct a glider that takes them far from their home territory, and so begins a whole new adventure for the boys, as they travel from island to island in search of gold. Their adventures are many and they come close to death. They do in the end, find the gold – but it is nothing like what they expected.

Author Biography Geraldine Mills has been writing for many years and is well established as a poet and short-story writer, with several books to her name. This is her first novel, and her first book for children. She lives outside Galway city with her husband.
