This summer people across Ards & North Down are being encouraged to continue to leave their car at home and take part in the Active Travel Challenge in a bid to be more sustainable, save money and to boost physical and mental health.

From a short trip to the shop to the commute to work, the Active Travel Challenge recently encouraged participants to switch up their usual routine and try walking, cycling or taking public transport as a cleaner, greener way to travel.

The joint initiative was free to sign up to and ran

Council’s Event Recycling Stations a Huge Success

Ards and North Down Borough Council is celebrating the success of its newly implemented recycling stations at Council-run events, demonstrating its commitment to recycling and sustainability.

During the recent Sea Bangor Festival, which took place recently, almost 4 tonnes of waste was collected at the supervised recycling point put in place by the Council, of which an impressive 98.5% was sent for recycling into new products.

This marks a massive increase in the amount of recyclable waste being diverted from landfill at Council events.

The Mayor of Ards and North Down, Councillor Jennifer Gilmour, said:

“This new initiative is proving to be a great success, not only for our ratepayers but for the environment too. It also helps place Ards and North Down firmly on the map in terms of its sustainable tourism offering. It will appeal to people from far

and wide, people who are likely to be attracted to our events because of our strident efforts to promote recycling and the wider sustainability agenda.” A full breakdown of waste disposed of at the Council’s Sea Bangor recycling station during the two-day event is as follows:

• 1,632kg dry recycling waste

• 1,782kg organic waste

• 420kg separated glass

• 60kg landfill waste

To encourage members of the public to use the recycling stations at events, the Council is discouraging the use of the nearby public bins. Instead, they are being directed to dispose of their waste at the specific recycling stations where staff are on hand to provide advice on which bins to use.

for the entire month of June.

Participants logged their ‘active travel’ journeys on the online platform for a chance to win a of range prizes, including vouchers, travel tickets, gym passes and rewards with national and regional retailers.

The Active Travel Challenge is a partnership between Sustrans, Translink,

the Department for Infrastructure, the Public Health Agency (PHA), Belfast Health and Social Care Trust, and Belfast City Council, with the popular annual challenge open to individuals and organisations of any size across Northern Ireland to take part and help create habits for a

cleaner, healthier, and more sustainable lifestyle. The Challenge was also a great way to stimulate a little friendly competition between organisations and indeed amongst teams and colleagues.

Ali McKay-Geary, from the Level 2 Traineeship NI in Hospitality & Tourism Team Member (Food and Beverage Service) said, “My placement was at Arena Suites, a local hotel, and my role as part of the front of house team involved setting tables for breakfast and lunch as well as preparing cocktail drinks at the pool bar area. I loved the work and the whole experience, and I would love to go back. I was offered the opportunity to go back out to work there again which would be fantastic.”

New shelter to be built at BARN, thanks to Lambeg community store

BARN Animal Rescue are planning to construct a new shelter to house pregnant dogs and new born puppies that need extra care and attention, thanks to fundraising by SPAR Lambeg.

To raise the muchneeded funds, the team swapped out their usual uniform for a dress up day, raising over £900 for the charity.

BARN Animal Rescue is a Newtownards based charity which promotes animal welfare, rescuing those in need, providing care and rehoming when they are ready. Some dogs have also found a permanent home at the BARN.

Glenn Ford from BARN commented, “Our charity relies solely on donations, so support like this from SPAR Lambeg is vital for us to continue what we do. We want to extend our thanks to the team and their shoppers for such generosity. All money the team have raised will go towards the construction of the new shelter.”

West Winds community garden gets growing

A community garden project in West Winds, Newtownards, is helping residents of all ages get to grips with gardening.

Locals have the chance to develop their green fingers at the West Winds Community Office thanks to a community grant worth £4,000 from the Housing Executive.

Eileen Thompson, Area Manager for Ards and North Down at the Housing Executive, said: “It is fantastic to see this funding being used for a project which brings the whole community together.

“Work has already started to transform the courtyard area of the community office into a space where people can gather and socialise, with the addition of a new seating area and a shelter.

“West Winds Development Association have made a real commitment to creating a garden which can be enjoyed by everyone.

“This has been achieved with things like raised planters, creating a space which is accessible and welcoming for all.”

Billy Sproule, Chair of West Winds Development Association, said: “Our courtyard is an area which is frequently used by residents as a space to

socialise.

“This joint project with West Winds Community Church has helped us improve the courtyard and ensure it remains a busy community hub for the area.

“Our new accessible garden means older people in particular can get involved in the project. We hope this will encourage more people to take part and help to combat social isolation.

“We now have a workbench and pergola installed with hanging baskets, which has transformed the courtyard into a much more attractive place to sit.

“Three raised planters have been installed and these will be used to grow vegetables and other plants.

“Our produce will be grown by the community and for the community with the ingredients

harvested used for social lunches throughout the summer period.

“A barbeque area is also being planned for the whole community to enjoy.

“We are delighted to receive this community grant from the Housing Executive which has really helped enhance the area and create a garden that brings the community together.” For more information visit nihe.gov.uk.

LETS GO TO LES GETS!

Our roving reporter samples summer season life off piste at Les Gets

When you think of the Alps your mind is immediately transported to tree-lined slopes covered in the most perfect white snow but that’s not all this stunning location has to offer.

The magnificent playground of Les Gets is the European leader in mountain biking with over 128km of marked trails for all levels.

During the winter the network of lifts serves

skiers and snowboarders but in the summer they serve both hiking and mountain biking. My visit to Les Gets in the heart of the Alps was an experience I will never forget. There are times in life when you think “wow this is once in a lifetime” and Les Gets was exactly that for me.

I arrived into Geneva airport and got my transfer which took just over an hour to reach the

it!

resort and the beautiful Chalet Valambrun, hosted by Jack and Jill Holidays.

The chalet is close to the centre of Les Gets and boats 5 ensuite bedrooms, an additional bunk bed room, a hot tub, swimming pool and best of all, a cinema room! Yes, that’s right your very own cinema room to unwind after an active day on the slopes is just what the kids and grown ups will love, I know I did!

Jamie and Mary from Jack and Jill Holidays are the the perfect hosts who go and above and beyond to make sure their guests needs are catered for.

Their attention to detail is exceptional and if you choose to book one of their chalets with catering included you will not be disappointed with the culinary delights that are served up.

Chalet Valambrun can sleep between 10 to

15 people with prices ranging between £5,000 and £7,000 during the Summer months.

While there I partook in a few cycling activities which I am a novice at. Yes I know how to ride a bike but I never thought I would be taking on part of the route from the world famous, Tour de France, but boy did I love it.

Our first day was a road cycle with Buzz Cycling up Mont Caly. In total it was about 4km to reach the top which sounds quite moderate but in 27 degree heat we definitely worked up a sweat.

Taking a few pit stops for water we took in the breath-taking views of the Alps and got a good workout while doing it. Our guide, Amelia Pearson, who is a former professional triathlete was considerate to our fitness levels and thoroughly encouraging

as we made our way to the top.

Once there we stopped at Les Chevrelles restaurant for some mouth-watering French bread and cheese and a glass of white wine to wash it down. With a view of Mont Blanc I was literally feeling on top of the world in that moment.

After some chats and laughs we made our decent (which I actually found more challenging than the ascent!) back to our chalet for some R&R in the hot tub.

The next morning we were booked in for E biking, another first for me. We picked up our rented bikes from The Hub in Les Gets and set off with our tour guide, Lionel.

From the start I did find the biking quite challenging but my fear was hindering me. Once I started to let go a little and embrace the speed then it started to come more naturally. On our circuit through the Alps on the e bikes was one of the most special experiences I have ever had on a holiday. The views were like nothing I have ever seen before, showcasing the worlds beauty at its best. I was struck at how such a simple activity like cycling could be so therapeutic and good for the soul. I’ll never forget

I couldn’t finish this review without mentioning our favourite haunt in Les Gets, L’apres Ski bar. With outdoor seating, live music, exquisite food and top notch service it was a perfect stop off for a cold beer after our fun filled morning of activities. Throughout my four days there we just seemed to keep going back and I have no doubt on my next visit to Les Gets a beer will taste just as good in the snow.

In Les Gets, there are a number of hotels as well as numerous chalets and apartments. There are around 40 restaurants to choose from, both on and off the mountain. For more information on spectacular accommodation in Les Gets check out https:// jackandjillholidays.com

Heatwave caution – experts highlight garden furniture’s hidden fire risk this summer

Experts have warned that Brits should prepare themselves for potential fire hazards in their gardens and on their patios as the UK faces the possibility of another scorching summer.

The warning from GB Foam, a UK furniture component expert, comes after the UK faced a staggering 28% increase in fires in 2022, with 185,437 incidents reported according to GOV UK. The unprecedented dry weather of last summer caused by record-breaking heat helped fuel the alarming surge.

Alongside commonly acknowledged fire dangers such as barbeques and fire pits, the experts have highlighted how garden furniture is an often overlooked aspect of outdoor fire safety.

Incidents last year demonstrated that some furniture may not be capable of withstanding extreme heat, as Kirsty Gawne from Stockbridge village discovered during the hottest day ever on UK record, when her £400 outdoor rattan sofa from Homebase set alight, causing significant damage to her home. Also last year, Aldi announced that certain garden furniture it had sold posed a fire risk due to an issue with the cushion covers, and would therefore need to send replacements for the items.

As we prepare for another summer of high temperatures, the experts at GB Foam have provided their top tips to mitigate the risk of fires in outdoor

spaces:

• Check for fire safety labels on furniture: Look for fire safety labels that indicate legal compliance with UK standards. If uncertain, consult your furniture supplier for clarification.

• Remove glass tops from furniture in extreme heat: If possible, some manufacturers advise removing glass tops from tables, as they can intensify heat in direct sunlight, leading to melting or burning.

• Exercise caution with garden mirrors: When mirrors reflect sun rays, they concentrate energy. This could be enough to cause combustion when directed at flammable materials.

• Maintain a safe distance around BBQs and fire pits: Keep flammable materials at a safe distance from BBQs and fire pits and have an appropriate fire extinguishing source at hand.

• Extinguish cigarettes responsibly: Smokers should ensure cigarettes are properly extinguished and disposed of in designated containers. Refrain from discarding them on the ground or in vegetation.

• Maintain vegetation: Trim and water trees, shrubs and grass in your outdoor areas regularly to minimise the risk of fire.

Clear away dry debris which could fuel potential grass fires.

• Install and maintain smoke alarms: Make sure to have working smoke alarms not only throughout your home but also in outdoor spaces like sheds or garages. Test them monthly and replace batteries as necessary.

• Avoid leaving your phone in direct sunlight: Prolonged exposure to heat can cause a chain reaction in your phone’s battery causing it to set alight. To prevent this, keep your phone away from direct sunlight for long periods of time as well as away from potentially flammable surfaces like cushions and throws. Power banks can cause a similar reaction in high temperatures, so charge your phone in a cooler environment.

• Source replacement cushion filling responsibly: If replacing the filling for your outdoor cushions, ensure the materials are obtained from a reputable supplier.

Fillings should comply with relevant fire safety standards to help reduce the risk of ignition and improve the overall safety of your outdoor space.

Addressing outdoor fire hazards, GB Foam has unveiled an outdoor cush-

ion foam with fast-drying properties and enhanced fire protection, which shows significantly re-

duced flammability when compared to a sample of reticulated foam widely used throughout the UK.

Gilmore Funeral Directors Ltd strives to offer peace of mind at family’s time of need

Like the premises themselves, Gilmore Funeral Directors are constantly evolving to meet the needs of their community.

Alongside offering traditional life celebration and contemporary online streaming services, the family-run business based in Comber and serving all areas also offer direct cremation with or without optional extras.

Gilmore Funeral Directors recently expanded their Comber premises to include the Bank Building at 1 Killinchy Street. Reuniting the former Danske Bank with Gilmores’ original premises has not only created a beautiful space to serve families’ needs, it has sympathetically restored one of Comber’s most iconic properties. The renovation has considerably increased Gilmores’ capacity to provide a bright and tranquil resting and celebration space in the heart of the town.

Since its establishment in 1987, GFD has become integral to community life on The Square in Comber, a principle central to the vision of founder Ken

Gilmore, Dip NAFD, his staff and his children who support him in serving the community.

“Our desire has always been that our family is there to look after grieving families when they are in greatest need,” says Ken Gilmore. “We understand that the loss of a loved one is the most difficult experience we endure in life. As an independent, family-run business, we are ideally placed to offer a bespoke service and accommodate all the wishes of those who need our assistance.”

In the 35 years since Ken, assisted by his father Melville, established GFD, he has seen much change. Keen to provide a nondenominational space in which services could be held by those of any faith or none, Ken built a service room which seats around 120 people. Alongside catering for traditional church services, Gilmores now facilitate many services in their own premises. You can also count on the compassionate and

dedicated team at GFD for gracefully designed memorial and head stones. Whatever your requirements, they can assist you in selecting a fitting memorial for your loved one.

In addition, Ken provides a range of funeral services that include bereavement support, repatriation from any country, cremation and burial, along with facilitating traditional requirements such as service sheets, flowers, organising donations and transportation.

Ken has also noticed throughout his career the increase in those taking out funeral plans

to reduce the emotional and financial burden on loved ones after they’re gone. A range of funeral plans, offered through Golden Charter, can be tailored to the specific desires and requirements of the individual, suiting every budget. Further, by investing in a prepaid funeral plan, you can have complete peace of mind knowing your funeral will take place according to your wishes. If Gilmore Funeral Directors Ltd can help you at all, or if you’d like more information, please call 028 9187 2949, visit the website at www. gilmore-funeraldirectors. co.uk or find them on Facebook.

The S T ory of Sun S creen

invented and developed over the centuries.

Ancient Sun Protection

Here is a brief overview of how sunscreen was

The earliest evidence of sun protection comes from ancient civilizations, such as Egypt, Greece, and India, who used natural ingredients to shield their skin from the sun. For example, ancient

Egyptians used extracts of rice, jasmine, and lupine plants, which had anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and skinlightening properties.

Ancient Greeks used olive oil, which had moisturizing and soothing effects. Ancient Indians used sandalwood paste, which had cooling

and antiseptic effects.

Modern Sunscreen

Before you slap on the spf this summer spare a thought for the story of a genius product. Sunscreen is a product that we use today to protect our skin from the harmful effects of the sun’s rays, such as sunburn, premature aging, and skin cancer. But did you know that sunscreen has a long and fascinating history?

The first modern sunscreen was invented in the 1930s by different chemists in different countries. In Australia, H.A. Milton Blake formulated a sunscreen with salol, a chemical that absorbed ultraviolet B (UVB) rays, which cause sunburn. In the United States, Benjamin Green created a sunscreen with cocoa butter and red veterinary petroleum, which formed a physical barrier on the skin. In Switzerland, Franz Greiter developed a sunscreen with benzyl salicylate and benzyl cinnamate, which also absorbed UVB rays. He also introduced the term sun protection factor (SPF), which measures

how long a sunscreen can protect the skin from UVB rays.

Broad-Spectrum

Sunscreen

However, UVB rays are not the only type of radiation that can damage the skin. Ultraviolet A (UVA) rays can also penetrate deeper into the skin and cause wrinkles, sagging, and skin cancer. Therefore, in the 1980s, sunscreen manufacturers started to add ingredients that could block or reflect both UVA and UVB

rays, such as zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. These sunscreens are called broad-spectrum sunscreens, as they offer more comprehensive protection from the sun.

Future Sunscreen

Today, sunscreen is widely available in various forms, such as lotions, sprays, gels, sticks, and powders. Sunscreen is also regulated by various authorities, such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the United States and the

European Commission in Europe, to ensure its safety and efficacy. However, sunscreen is not perfect and still has some limitations and challenges. For example, some sunscreen ingredients may cause allergic reactions or environmental issues. Some people may not apply enough sunscreen or reapply it frequently enough. Some people may also neglect other forms of sun protection, such as clothing, hats, sunglasses, and shade.

Therefore, researchers are constantly looking for new ways to improve sunscreen and make it more user-friendly and eco-friendly. For example, some researchers are exploring nanotechnology to create smaller and more effective sunscreen particles. Some researchers are also investigating natural sources of sun protection, such as algae or coral. Some researchers are even trying to create edible or drinkable sunscreens that can protect the skin from within.

Sunscreen is a product that has evolved over time to meet the needs and demands of people who want to enjoy the sun without harming their skin and its use has saved many lives and prevented many diseases. Sunscreen is a product that we should appreciate and use wisely and well!

CLEAN CUT

Want your green to look professionally manicured? Get mowing with our top tips!

Alternate your mowing route. Lawns that are mowed the same direction every time develop unsightly stripes that may grow back irregularly.

Mow early in the day when the grass is dry. Wet grass can clog your mower and make it harder to get a clean cut. Take your time and mow slowly. This will help you get a more even cut and avoid scalping the lawn.

Adhere to the onethird rule. Never cut more than one-third

of the grass blade at once. This will help keep your lawn healthy and prevent damage to the grass roots.

Don’t cut your grass too short. Cutting your grass too short can weaken it and make it more susceptible to

disease and pests. Keep your blade sharp.

A dull blade can tear the grass instead of cutting it cleanly, which can lead to

NI Water is appealing to the public to take care of their dog and take the lead when visiting any of its beauty spots.

NI Water is proud to host visitors to many of these sites. However, visitors are reminded that the policy across all NI Water sites is to keep dogs on leads at all times. This is to ensure the safety of both your pets and local wildlife.

Many sites owned by NI Water, such as areas of the Mourne Mountains and the Garron Plateau, are also used by local farmers to graze livestock.

Rebecca Allen, Catchment Officer explains: “Often the presence of a dog is enough to spook a sheep and cause it to harm itself in an attempt to get to safety. If a dog is found to be worrying sheep, its owners may face a fine of up to £1000 if found guilty of the offence.

“Dogs can also worry cattle and unknowingly carry bacteria into the area, which affects cattle health. We ask that all visitors to NI Water lands follow the Countryside Code for Northern Ireland and keep dogs on leads at all times and bag and bin all dog waste. Unfortunately, in the past week there has been a tragic incident of a sheep dying as a result of a dog attack on our land, and this is just sad and unacceptable.

“Our countryside areas also provide important habitat for a diverse range of wildlife including rare breeding

birds. Keeping your dog on a lead keeps our wildlife safe and your dog safe and happy too.”

What Fruits are best for dogs to eat?

Here are some safe options.

Apples Remove the core and the seeds and you’ve got a great fruit snack ready for your dog to enjoy. Apples are high in vitamins A and C, and there’s a good amount of fibre in each serving, making it one of the best types of fruit to offer to your dog.

Do bear in mind that apple seeds contain a tiny amount of cyanide which is toxic to your pet (and to humans, but the quantity is too small for us to worry about). Make sure you remove the seeds and cut the apple into small pieces your dog can easily handle. It’s important not to feed too large chunks, as they could be a choking hazard for your pet.

Bananas

When we’re considering what fruits are good for dogs, many of us think of bananas straight away. Containing a fantastic range of nutrients from potassium to fibre and vitamins,

bananas make a great treat for humans and dogs alike. However, they’re also high in sugar which means it’s best to only give your pet a little bit at once, and just very occasionally as a reward for those really good deeds. Keep the banana peel out of their reach though, as it can be difficult for canine stomachs to digest. Chop the fruit up into bite-sized pieces for your pup to enjoy.

Strawberries

These red little berries are a favourite in many households and if dogs are present, they might develop a fondness for this summer fruit too. The good news is that strawberries have no toxic substances that dog owners should worry about. But their sugar content can create health problems if this fruit ends up on your dog’s menu too often. Particularly if your dog is small, it’s worth cutting these fruits up into little pieces to minimise the risk of choking. Find

out more about how to feed strawberries to your dog in our guide.

Watermelon

Watermelon, minus the rind and the seeds, is another fruit you can safely offer to you dog. Plus, it’s over 90% water, making it a tasty

source of extra hydration in those hot summer months. Did we mention it’s also packed with potassium and vitamins?

Offer watermelon to your pet in two or three bite-sized chunks and watch them enjoy this refreshing treat.

Always remember that if you’re in any doubt over what fruits your dog can eat, it’s best to check with your vet, especially if your dog is overweight, suffering from diabetes or a particular digestive problem.

Planning to landsca P e your garden?

When landscaping your garden, there are several things you should consider. Here are just a few of them:

Begin by defining how your garden will be used. Common uses for outdoor spaces include entertaining, cooking and dining, playing and relaxing

It’s important to analyse the site before you begin landscaping. There are many key elements that could affect your design, such as slopes, peaks, drainage patterns, and the

type of soil. The ideal soil is 40% sand, 40% silt, and 20% clay. Some people choose to build towards the ideal over several years and develop their garden plan in sections Design - You may have a good head for design- you may not, you may even have something drawn up already! Know your garden: Think about your own little micro-climate, drainage and the sun position at the times of day when you will want to use your garden most. You will also want to consider the topography of your site, and your soil type when planning your landscape. Who will be using your garden?

Is it just you or will children or animals be sharing the space? What about access and also security of the space –both when you are at home and when you aren’t? Think about themes, how to create zones and link spaces. You will want to

them - through placement, reflection (in a water feature for example) or with lighting.

Structure - When designing a landscape garden, it’s important to consider what structure you are going to use.

Consider your products and materials in terms of affordability, function, investment value and longevity. How will your lawn be edged? Do you want to have flowers or shrubs in borders, beds and/or containers. Would you like an outdoor kitchen? Is artificial grass a good option?

Soft landscaping is the process of designing the elements of a landscape that do not involve construction. These elements include trees, shrubs, and flowers, as well as container gardens, potted plants, and hanging baskets. Perennials and shrubs (which flower year after year) may lack

1st year impactbut will build and bulk out for the future.

When considering soft landscaping for your garden, you should think about the following:

The type of soil in your garden, The amount of sunlight your garden receives, The climate in your area, The amount of maintenance you are willing to do.

If you are a gardening novice check out which types of plants thrive in your neighbours gardens as this can make choosing your own plants easier! Above all know when to call a professional, they will be able to handle and develop your project with your vision in mind!

Summer Bar B eque Guide relax out-of-door S into the evenin G

With the sun beating down and heat slowly rising, it is clear to see that barbeque season has finally arrived. However, if you are thinking of investing in a barbeque, there is a great deal to consider.

Prices for barbeques can range from £10 to the multiple thousands and the extensive range has something to cater for every possible need.

Depending on the number of grills, number of additional features and quality of its production – there is a lot to consider when choosing your perfect barbeque.

The timeless debate which has been had over many a family barbeque once again raises it’s head on this occasion – gas or charcoal?

In many cases your budget might well dictate your choice for you as charcoal

barbeques tend to be significantly more cost effective. For those barbeque stalwarts, nothing will compare to a traditional charcoal barbeque and using a gas equivalent is as good as cheating.

It is also widely held that the taste from cooking on a charcoal barbeque is distinctive and cannot be reproduced by a modern gas counterpart.

Charcoal does, however, take a considerable length of time to heat up whereas with gas, you can begin cooking almost immediately –providing an obvious advantage. For the

sheer convenience of instantaneous cooking, gas barbeques are hard to beat.

In terms of running costs, with gas barbeques you will often ‘rent’ a cylinder

and pay for each refill of gas that you require - With charcoal however, costs

approximately £15 for a 10kg bag which will serve up to three medium barbeques.

Beat the evening chill and relax out-ofdoors into the evening

Summer nights can be chilly, especially here in NI, but that doesn’t mean you have to give up on enjoying your outdoor space.

There are many patio heating methods that can keep you warm and cosy while you dine al fresco, have a drink, or relax with a book. Whether you prefer electric, gas, or solid fuel heaters, there is an option that suits your budget, style, and needs. Here are some of the best patio heating methods for summer nights that you can try.

Electric Patio Heaters

Electric patio heaters are convenient and efficient, as they can be turned on and off when required, saving costs and electricity. They also produce directional heat that targets the people around them, instead of wasting heat in the air. Electric patio heaters can be mounted on walls or ceilings, or used as free-

7 budget ways to transform your home

You don’t need to spend a fortune to transform your living space.

1 Paint your stairs

A staircase is a great place to splash out with colour. Whether you decide to paint a simple runner in one solid block up the middle, or do something really adventurous such as painting each step a different shade, the key is to prime first and then apply at least three coats.

2 Say it with flowers

The quickest of fixes has to be flowers. A freshly picked bunch of blooms will provide an instant pickup, but for a longer-lasting effect, fill a container with flowering bulbs such as hyacinths or narcissi. Not only do they look great, they smell divine too – and all for under a tenner.

3 Shed-u-Like

The humble garden shed scrubs up surprisingly well if treated to a little TLC in the form of an attractive coat of paint. Plant a climbing rose or two around the door for extra chocolate box charm.

4 Box clever

Discovering a new storage solution is a simple pleasure. Something as effortless as these cubes, one for each member of the family, is pure genius. Keys and phones can be left or retrieved with every

coming and going. Ikea does Drona boxes like those pictured in pink, blue and black for £2.93 each

5 Below stairs

With a little imagination, that dead space under the stairs can be transformed into something both stylish and useful. Instead of bunging your wine under there, why not open up the space as much as is possible, hire a carpenter to install some simple seating with concealed storage beneath (for the wine), paint it a cool contemporary white, and then lie back and relax.

6 Make the most of it

When money’s tight, you’ll want to get more bang for your buck, so spend on objects that you’ll use and that will give you pleasure every day. Such humdrum “micro pleasures” as a new set of mugs or a fruit bowl can gladden the heart on a daily basis.

7. Front door chic Good-quality ironmongery and a beautifully applied paint finish can transform the plainest door. Recent trends for softer shades of paint, particularly greys, in matt or eggshell finishes, work well

standing units that can be moved around. They use short wave lamps that produce heat in bodies and objects, which means they are not affected by wind or temperature drops.

Gas Patio Heaters

Gas patio heaters are more environmentally friendly than ever, as they use liquid petroleum gas (LPG) that burns cleanly and produces low emissions. They also come in various designs and

styles that can enhance the look of your patio, such as wall heaters, heating lamps, and parasol heaters. Gas patio heaters can create a warm and inviting atmosphere for your outdoor space, with a range of sizes and outputs to suit different needs.

Solid Fuel Heaters

Solid fuel heaters are the most traditional and natural way to heat your patio, as they use wood or charcoal

to create fire and warmth. They can also add some charm and character to your outdoor space, with a variety of materials, shapes, colours, and patterns to choose from.

Solid fuel heaters include fire pits, fire bowls, chimineas, and fireplaces. They can provide a cosy and romantic ambience for your summer nights, with the crackling sound and flickering light of the flames.
