Holywood clinches ‘Best Kept Medium Town’ at 2023 Best Kept Awards NI
Holywood is celebrating winning the Best Kept Medium Town Award at the 2023 Best Kept Awards NI, which took place at Mossley Mill, Newtownabbey recently. The judges were greatly impressed by Holywood’s charming High Street with attractive buildings and meticulously maintained commercial properties making it a welcoming destination for visitors and an exceptionally appealing place for residents to call home. The annual event
organised by the Northern Ireland Amenity Council (NIAC) and generously sponsored by George Best Belfast City Airport, honours the unwavering commitment and tireless efforts of volunteers, Improvement Groups and Councils all who have significantly contributed to enhancing
their community’s environment. Now in its 66th year, the Best Kept campaign attracted participants from all corners of Northern Ireland. NIAC Chairman Doreen Muskett MBE praised the town’s approach roads, lush plantings, exquisite paving and outstanding street
furniture. Commenting on the award she said: “All of these major efforts reflect the diligent work of a rejuvenated Community Group, kudos to everyone involved in this achievement.”

Bangor pupils get a head start in Athletics NI League
The Flahavan’s Primary School Cross Country League has officially kicked off for another year with young athletes from Bangor taking to Portstewart Strand to put their best foot forward.
Marking the 13th consecutive year of the Flahavan’s sponsorship, the 2023 Squad – the top placed girls and boys from the 2022 League, including local Bangor pupils
Carter Rolston from Towerview Primary School and Sebastian Mair from St Comgall’s Primary School- took to the beach for the first training session of the season, which was
attended by Hannah Gilliland, who is the new ambassador for the 2023-2024 League. The 2023-24 league is set to attract approximately 4,000 competitors from 400 schools across Northern Ireland bringing together young runners aged between 9 and 12 years old. The format for the 2023-24 season will consist of three rounds across the six regions in Northern Ireland, with the first of the rounds due to take place on Friday 20th October 2023 at Portadown Rugby Club, with schools competing in two out of the three rounds to qualify for the final in February 2024. A keen crosscountry runner hailing from Ballynahinch, Hannah has competed at various local and national competitions. Watching from the sidelines, Hannah provided some words of inspiration for the squad: “It is incredible to see the dedication, hardwork, and talent shining through from these
young athletes at such an early stage of their athletic careers. I have no doubt that the Flahavan’s Primary School Cross Country League produces the best up and coming talent in Northern Ireland and I’m excited to see how each of the athletes’ progress throughout the league. “With any sport, it’s vital to stay focused and motivated on, and by your goals, as well as maintaining a consistent training routine to achieve your potential. £200,000 GRANTS SCHEME RETURNS TO TACKLE MARINE LITTER
The civic-pride campaign, Live Here Love Here, has announced the return of the highly successful Marine Litter Grant, an initiative funded by the Waste Prevention Branch of the Department of Agriculture, Environment, and Rural Affairs (DAERA). The initiative will support ideas that prevent litter from entering waterways in Ards and across NI, including oceans, coastlines, rivers and lakes. The scheme aims to protect our blue spaces, improve marine biodiversity, and support the health of our communities with aquatic spaces a key contributor to wellbeing. Community groups, organisations and businesses based anywhere in Northern Ireland can apply for a share of the £200,000 fund available this year. Ruth Clarke, Waste Prevention Policy Branch DAERA said, “We are proud to support the Marine Litter Capital Grants Scheme for the third year, and look forward to seeing the varied and innovative projects come to life as a result of this funding.” According to the European Environment Agency, 80 per cent of marine litter originates from land-based activities with 85 per
cent of this content plastic that permeates for up to 500 years. Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful’s most recent Marine Litter Report, published in 2022, shows that an average of 762 items of litter were found per 100 metres of beach surveyed, double the 375 items recorded the previous year. Chris Gourley, Waste and Pollution Solutions Strategic Lead at Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful, said, “We are committed to the ongoing and complex battle against marine pollution and delighted to deliver this grant scheme once again with support from DAERA. In the last three years we have identified a diverse array of projects that tackle the problem of marine pollution from both land and sea. These projects span a wide spectrum of creative solutions and approaches, but all share the common goal of safeguarding our aquatic spaces, proving that together,
we can make a real difference to pollution levels, but also leave a legacy of environmental stewardship for generations to come.” The Marine Litter Grants Scheme has already made a significant impact on marine conservation efforts across Northern Ireland with funding provided for over 50 innovative projects with a combined value of £550,000.
Eligible projects include ideas that could minimise waste generated by events such as disposable items which can enter our waterways. Another route is to submit an idea that reduces the impact of shipping and vessel operations such as discarded fishing gear, cargo packaging, and other materials that can contribute to marine pollution. Also considered are ideas that
can prevent or reduce urban and rural litter, such as rubbish and debris found in streets and parks, which is often carried by wind into rivers and oceans. Applications for the Marine Litter Grant are open until November 9th. Special recognition reception for Bangor and Portaferry Coastguard Rescue Teams North Down DUP MLA Stephen Dunne has held a special recognition reception for the Bangor and Portaferry Coastguard Rescue Teams at Stormont. Mr Dunne commented: ‘I was delighted to welcome both the Bangor and Portaferry Coastguard Rescue Teams to Parliament Buildings for a special recognition reception. The event was an opportunity to give a big thank you for the tremendous work carried out by this dedicated group of individuals who are part of His Majesty’s Coastguard and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency alongside Councillor David Kerr. Being able to speak with the team about their experiences emphasised the wide range of incidents they attend as well as just how multi-skilled each team member is. From mud rescues and water rescues to missing person searches both teams work tirelessly 24/7 365 days a year to help keep the public safe, all while balancing their

Free training for future female leaders in Ards and North Down
Ambitious women working in the Ards and North Down area are invited to apply for a new Female Leadership programme, which will boost business skills and deliver a management qualification. Fully funded through Ards and North Down Borough Council’s
Economic Development Department, the Female Leadership programme
will be delivered by South Eastern Regional College (SERC) over six weeks from 20 November. Participants will benefit from five hours one-toone mentoring - face to face or online - to address business and individual needs and challenges, and online tutoring towards achieving a Chartered Management Institute (CMI) qualification at Level 3, Level 5 or Level 7. Carla Hodgson, a selfemployed artist who gained the CMI Level 5
on last year’s Women into Leadership programme at SERC, says the programme has had a big impact on her working life: “I wasn’t sure about returning to study, but the teacher was incredible and got me through. It’s helped me think differently: I take my business seriously and I consider the bigger picture. I can see the structure of what I am doing, and I have a better understanding of the language of business – and have the confidence to use it! Getting the qualification was amazing – I had a huge sense of achievement.” Angela McAllister of Ards and North Down Borough Councils’ Economic Development Team, adds:
“The Female Leadership programme has been designed to help address many of the barriers that women must overcome in order to pursue their ambitions in leadership and management roles. The course structure aims to minimise disruption to day-to-day business and home commitments, whilst giving local women the opportunity to drive their career progression for those leadership and management roles that will help drive our local economy. “Supporting more women into senior roles will not only make our businesses more representative, but it will also improve the products and services they deliver. The mentoring on offer
through the Women in Leadership programme is invaluable. I would encourage anyone eligible to sign-up for this initiative to help take their career and business to the next level.”

The events which highlight the importance of conservation education within schools, aim to inspire the next generation to care for and protect green spaces through a range of fun activities. From bug hunting to den building, seed planting, nature-based crafts, and outdoor games, Wild Days Out also support young children to learn new skills, become more adventurous and grow in confidence. As part of its ongoing
partnership with TCV, Hughes Insurance is inviting schools to win one of two action-packed days through a provincewide competition. Open to all Primary 5 classes, schools must submit a poster and 100 words on how they could benefit from the experience and why they should be chosen to receive a visit from TCV. Ireland with plans laid to grow 50,000 to 77,000 native trees at TCV’s Tree Nursery at the Ulster Folk Museum in Cultra. The funding provided will enhance local biodiversity and protect local species by providing food and shelter for small birds and mammals including the much-loved Red Squirrel. The Hughes Insurance funding is part of its Action for Impact initiative – a £100,000 commitment to various
charities and organisations to deliver on its Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance (ESG) agenda in 2023 and beyond. The initiative, designed to support communities, also improves employee wellbeing with up to 250 employees delivering over 3,500 hours of volunteering across the province over the coming months. Facts About Reindeer
Despite what popular mythology might suggest, Reindeers do not fly - however, they do sometimes have red noses. The image of Reindeer pulling Santa’s sleigh around the globe accompanied by the sound of bells and trampling hooves have graced the dreams of children worldwide for generations. They are as much a part of Christmas as the decorated tree or even the turkey dinner, but what do you know about the animal itself? Reindeers are part of the deer family – or Cervidae – which also includes similar animals such as the elk and the moose. All of these animals share various features ranging from long legs and hooves to antlers and snouts. The name ‘reindeer’

refers only to the Eurasian populations of the species, with the North American equivalents being named Caribou. Reindeer differ from their biological cousins in that both males and females grow antlers; however they also lose and regrow these each year. A male reindeer’s antlers can grow up to 130cm long and weight up to 15kg. The female equivalent is slightly smaller, growing up to approximately 50cm. Male reindeer tend to lose their antlers in November, but females keep theirs for a significantly longer period. This means, in theory, that all of Santa’s reindeer must

He tells us about the commissioning process. “Commissioning an artwork involves a client asking an artist to create a bespoke piece of art based on their particular requests, often to make a statement in their own home… especially if they are finding it difficult to find an existing piece that resonates. I find that many also use the commissioning process to source gifts for special occasions such as weddings, retirements and birthdays,” explained Adrian.
“I work with the client to explore various size options to suit their space and budget. I also work with them to determine the desired colour palette and style. I have a few contrasting styles and normally the person commissioning will have a preference. I find it useful to show examples of previous work that might help steer the commission. I mainly paint landscapes and cityscapes so most of my commissions involve capturing a special place that has significance for the commissioner or the person receiving the piece as a gift. The client often supplies me with
images of the scene from the particular perspective they would like captured and I can follow up by taking more photographs if necessary. Occasionally I add figures to the landscape…perhaps a family grouping for example…to add another layer of personalisation,” enthused Adrian. Changing wall covering can happen as often as the seasons, but it is still important to get it right. Whether you choose paint or wallpaper, there is a lot to consider. Firstly, which room is it? What You Should Plant In Your Garden This Winter
This Helleborus is quite simply a must have for any winter garden. Helleborus are incredibly popular for gardeners in the winter months on account of the fact that they flower in the depths of winter when most other plants have faded away. It is for this reason that they have been dubbed ‘Christmas roses’ and are a favourite at this
time of the year. There are approximately 20 species of this perennial, providing a variety of colourful choices. The plants are easy to grow, making them the perfect choice for amateur and experienced botanists – with the added bonus of not having to be worried about them dying. Make sure that the soil is rich and not too dry or waterlogged to ensure optimum growth. They can be planted roughly 35-45cm apart, however some will need more space. Once planted, be sure to layer mulch
around the plants to prevent the soil from drying out – however you must keep the areas around the stems clear of mulch to prevent rotting. These winter buds are great companions for other Christmas bloomers such as snowdrops, primula and pulmonaria – bringing some much needed colour into any garden during the winter time. Snowdrops can be the first flowers to open in the New Year and happily grow under trees, shrubs and can liven up the base of your garden displays.
