Perched atop the rugged basalt cliffs of County Antrim, Fairhead Glamping Pods offers a rare blend of wild isolation and modern comfort Situated on a historic working farm that has been in the McCarry family for generations, these two luxury pods provide a front-row seat to the raw beauty of the North Coast.

The Glamping site is on Fairhead (Benmore) and is located just past Coolanlough, which is a clachan (small group of old cottages) and looks out over one of three lakes at Fairhead. Lough na Cranagh has a crannog (a manmade island) in the middle of it. The crannog in the lake dates back to approximately the 1600s and, reportably, was built by one of the McDonnell chieftains who apparently had a house and land on Fairhead

From your private balcony, you can watch the mist roll over the water or look across the North Channel toward the Mull of Kintyre in Scotland and Rathlin Island It is a place designed for slow mornings and fireside evenings, where the only neighbours you’re likely to encounter are the local livestock roaming the fields Unlike traditional camping, this experience is defined by underfloor heating, private en-suite bathrooms, and kitchenettes that make the Atlantic breeze feel much more inviting.

For those seeking adventure, the surrounding landscape is a playground of dramatic heights and cinematic views The Fairheadcliffs themselves are a world-class destination for climbers and hikers, offering 600-foot drops that provided a moody backdrop for Game of Thrones A short drive leads you to Murlough Bay, a hidden coastal gem where the steep, winding road reveals some of the most striking vistas in the country

CONSTRUCTION BEGINS ON FIRST £20M STAYCITY

IN NORTHERN IRELAND

Construction has officially begun on a landmark new aparthotel in Belfast, as Lotus Property secures the city as the launch location for a new brand concept from Staycity Group.

The 98-key development, due to open in May 2027, will see the transformation of the former Beaufort House office building on Wellington Place into a modern ninestorey aparthotel The project marks Staycity’s first move into Northern Ireland and will introduce a fresh design concept to its growing portfolio of 36 locations across Europe

Once complete, the aparthotel will feature a mix of studio and one-bedroom apartments, alongside a range of amenities including a gym, reception area, bar, restaurant and retail space. Designed with flexibility in mind, the new concept aims to blend contemporary style with the convenience of apartment living and the service standards of a hotel, appealing to both business and leisure travellers.

The development comes at a time when demand for overnight stays continues to rise, with visitors increasingly choosing longer, experience-led trips. Its central location positions the scheme to benefit from Belfast’s thriving tourism and events calendar.

Killowen Contracts has been appointed to carry out the construction work, and the project has been backed by Danske Bank, which provided funding to Lotus Property to support the transformation of the landmark city centre building.

With work now underway, the development is set to play a key role in shaping Belfast’s evolving hospitality landscape when it opens its doors in 2027.

Travel Health Concerns Addressed

As more people embrace travel later in life, a common but often unspoken concern continues to surface: what happens if youfallillwhileabroad?

For many older travellers or those managing ongoing medical conditions, the idea of being away from the familiarity of the National Health Service (NHS) can feel daunting. However, experts say that with the right preparation and support in place, there is little reason to let health worries overshadow travel

A growing number of travellers are turning to over-60s travel insurance policies, not out of expectation that something will go wrong, but for the reassurance that help is available if it does According to guidance from NHS and GOVUK, having comprehensive travel insurance is strongly recommended for anyone heading overseas.

TOURISM NI URGES ACCOMMODATION

PROVIDERS TO GET CERTIFIED AHEAD OF FLEADH 2026

Tourism Northern Ireland has launched a new certification campaign aimed at accommodation providers ahead of this summer ’ s Fleadh Cheoil na hÉireann.

Set to take place in Belfast from August 2–9, the world’s largest celebration of Irish music, song and dance is expected to attract around 700,000 visitors, including events across regional areas. With demand for accommodation set to soar, Tourism NI is reminding property owners that certification is a legal requirement for all visitor accommodation, even for short-term or ad-hoc rentals

The campaign highlights the importance of maintaining standards, ensuring fair competition, and building visitor confidence. Operating without certification could lead to legal consequences and damage the wider tourism sector’s reputation.

The certification process includes a property inspection and offers guidance on operations and marketing. The initiative is supported by the Northern Ireland Fire and Rescue Service, which is also encouraging providers to meet fire safety requirements.

An upcoming webinar will provide practical advice, including responsible pricing to keep the event accessible while supporting local businesses.

Tourism NI says early certification is key to ensuring visitors enjoy a safe, high-quality experience during what promises to be a landmark cultural event.

‘Magical’ lodges overlooking a historic Fairy Hill in County Derry have been awarded a four-star rating by Tourism Northern Ireland as part of its Quality Grading Scheme.

Fairy Tree Lodges offers three beautifully designed units, each featuring private garden space, a covered hot tub and modern interiors. Inspired by local folklore, the lodges take their name from a ‘Guardian Fairy’ and six fairy trees believed to watch over the site.

Assessors praised the “superb” personalisation of each lodge, highlighting the “exceptional” outdoor areas, complete with fairy lighting and all-weather facilities, as well as the “excellent” interior finish and décor.

Located beside Friels Bar and Restaurant, the lodges enhance the long-established family-run hospitality offering. Owner Dermot Friel welcomed the recognition, describing it as a proud milestone reflecting their commitment to quality, comfort and memorable guest experiences.

A spectacular programme of events is set to return to Mourne Gullion Strangford in 2026, as the much-loved Giant Adventures Series unveils an exciting lineup celebrating the region’s mythology, landscapes, food and music.

Organised by Newry, Mourne and Down District Council, the series features three immersive events running from August through October. The programme begins with Wake the Giant in Warrenpoint on August 1–2, followed by Eats and Beats in Newcastle on September 5–6, and concludes with Footsteps in the Forest at Slieve Gullion Forest Park from October 21–27.

Council Chairperson Philip Campbell said the series highlights everything that makes the destination unique, offering visitors the chance to reconnect with nature, heritage and community through authentic experiences.

Wake the Giant will once again bring the legend of Fionn mac Cumhaill to life, with the introduction of a new “Giant’s Trail” featuring interactive installations and storytelling חרב Warrenpoint.

The event promises family-friendly entertainment, local food and a vibrant festival atmosphere.

In September, Eats and Beats returns to Newcastle, set against the stunning Mourne Mountains. The festival will showcase top culinary talent, artisan produce and live music across multiple stages.

The series concludes with Footsteps in the Forest, a Halloween celebration inspired by Samhain traditions, blending folklore, performance and eerie encounters in a magical woodland setting.

Together, the three events offer a unique opportunity to experience the culture, creativity and natural beauty of the region across the seasons.

Caravanning and camping in Northern Ireland offer a wonderfully relaxed way to experience its dramatic coastlines, peaceful lakes and rolling countryside but planning ahead is key for a smooth summer escape. Popular council-run sites along the Causeway Coast, such as Benone, Juniper Hill and Carrick Dhu, are already seeing strong demand, while private parks in hotspots like Newcastle and the Fermanagh Lakelands fill quickly for July and August. Securing your pitch early will give you the best choice of locations and views.

Across the region, there’s a growing trend toward more immersive outdoor experiences. The Sperrin Mountains continue to attract stargazers thanks to their Dark Sky status, while Fermanagh remains a favourite for waterside breaks. With some campsites closed this season, areas like Castle Archdale and Kinnego Marina are expected to be especially busy.

Before setting off, a little preparation goes a long way. Check your tents, caravan or motorhome for damp after winter, and ensure your vehicle is road-ready for coastal routes and mountain roads.

Sustainable travel is also on the rise, with many sites encouraging low-impact camping. Choosing eco-friendly options, such as solar power or off-grid pitches, adds flexibility to your trip while helping preserve Northern Ireland’s stunning natural landscapes.

Hydration should be a top priority, especially for children who may not recognise early signs of thirst. Keep drinks appealing by adding fresh fruit like strawberries, mint or cucumber to water, or offer chilled bottles throughout the day. Seasonal snacks such as watermelon and berries are also great for boosting fluid intake while providing essential nutrients.

Protecting skin in the sun is just as important. Choose a broadspectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, apply it before heading outside and reapply regularly, particularly after swimming. Planning outdoor play for mornings or early evenings helps avoid the strongest midday sun, while hats and light clothing add extra protection.

Even with lighter summer schedules, sleep remains essential. Longer daylight hours can disrupt bedtime routines, so maintaining a consistent wind-down each evening helps children rest properly. With a balance of fun and a few mindful habits, families can enjoy a happy, healthy summer together.

This is the first time the city has hosted the "World Cup" of Irish traditional music, and it is expected to transform the city centre into a massive, family-friendly carnival. You can expect the streets to be alive with sessions, pageants, and plenty of free outdoor performances Just before the Fleadh kicks off, Belfast TradFest runs from late July into the first week of August, offering a perfect warm-up with world-class concerts and workshops that are surprisingly accessible for younger listeners If you need a break from the music, the Ulster Museum in the Botanic Gardens remains a reliable refuge, offering everything from Takabuti the mummy to dinosaur exhibits, and it is conveniently located right next to the park for a post-museum picnic.

Coastal Adventures and Maritime Magic

Heading north, the Foyle Maritime Festival in Derry~Londonderry returns in late June to celebrate the city’s seafaring history along the River Foyle It is a fantastic spot for children who love ships, street performers, and the inevitable excitement of a fireworks finale. Further along the Causeway Coast, the Red Sails Festival in Portstewart takes over the promenade in mid-July. It is a quintessential local festival featuring Irish dancing, live music on the waterfront, and sandcastle competitions that bring out the competitive streak in even the most relaxed parents For those who prefer a bit of speed, the North West 200 in May often kicks off the summer vibes early, but for a family day out later in the season, the Ulster International Rally in Ballymena this August celebrates its 50th anniversary with plenty of high-octane spectacle.

Festivals in the Fields: Arts and Nature

For a more laid-back, "boots and grass" experience, the Stendhal Festival in Limavady remains the gold standard for family-focused music events. Taking place in early July at Ballymully Cottage Farm, it offers a dedicated family programme that manages to be cool enough for teenagers while keeping toddlers safely occupied with arts and crafts. If you are looking for something closer to home in County Down, Down Time Summerfest in Downpatrick provides a quirky mix of horse racing, BMX displays, and live music in the heart of St. Patrick’s country. It is the kind of event where you can watch a high-energy stunt show and then wander over to a quiet heritage workshop within the same hour.

Thrills, Spills, and Indoor

Backups

We all know the Northern Irish summer can occasionally involve four seasons in a single afternoon. When the clouds turn grey, W5 at the SSE Arena is still the champion of indoor entertainment, with over 250 interactive exhibits that make science feel like a playground. For the older, more adventurous kids, The Jungle NI in Moneymore offers llama trekking and tree-top adventures that are perfect for burning off excess energy Alternatively, the Exploris Aquarium in Portaferry allows for an immersive look at the local marine life of Strangford Lough, providing a great educational hook that doesn't feel like a school lesson. Whatever the weather, the key this year is to keep a rain jacket in the boot of the car just in case.
