The world came to a screeching halt. COVID-19 brought the world to a screeching halt. And despite hopes this would last only six months, maybe a year at the most, we have all come to the stark realization COVID-19 may be here to stay.

I closed my letter in the 2019–20 annual report with “COVID-19 forever changed our educational landscape,” and while I would have liked those words to be erroneous, they were, and still are, very true.

In 2020–21, we tried to find normalcy in a world that was anything but normal. The Division of Student Affairs at East Carolina University® became even more flexible, adaptable and creative than in any time in our 114 years as an institution. We created a drop-off process as part of our move-in protocol to allow more than 5,800 students to safely move into the residence halls over a two-week period.

However, fewer than two weeks later, ECU and hundreds of other residential college campuses realized normal operations wouldn’t work in a pandemic. The word I have come to really dislike — pivot — became part of our everyday vernacular. Only about 12–14% of our on-campus population chose to remain on campus and all academic instruction transitioned to an online environment.

For Student Affairs professionals, we became more flexible, adaptable and creative. Family Weekend, Homecoming and most other programs were still delivered in a virtual environment. Maintaining a connection between ECU and the thousands of students no longer on campus was imperative.

Student Affairs continued serving on-campus residence hall students, but also distance education (DE) students as well. Simply put, everyone was now a DE student.

It is hard to ignore the tremendous adversity we faced during 2020–21, but we did experience success, too. Virtual career fairs connected students with employers and helped line up interviews and job opportunities. Major student events like Barefoot on the Mall, our annual end-of-year concert, was successfully held as Barefoot on the Lawn where students engaged in a virtual concert on Pirate™ Vision at the Student Center Lawn. And by the time we got to May 2021, we were able to hold three in-person graduation ceremonies at the football stadium.

As summer moved into fall and fall into spring, we have focused on the task at hand and continue to hope upon hope that some sense of normalcy will return in the year(s) ahead. The unknown we face is a challenge in and of itself. The normal we once knew is gone forever and every month, every week, every day and, frankly, every hour, the new normal is taking shape.

There is one thing I do know. ECU’s Division of Student Affairs will continue to be flexible, adaptable and creative. We…Will…Be…Ready!

Our frontline teams, who never left campus when the pandemic hit, were forced to work days, nights, weekends and holidays. Student Affairs staff in Student Health Services, the Dean of Students office and the Counseling Center started facing burnout conditions before the academic year started and when the “pivot” occurred, it only got worse.

Financially, the university suffered tens of millions of dollars in lost revenue during the 2020–21 academic year, which resulted in hiring freezes, divisionwide

Club Sports did not begin in-person activities until January 2021. As a result, only 600 athletes were active in the program, roughly 50% of the normal participation level.

Center for Counseling and Student Development (CCSD) During summer 2020, the ability to serve students’ counseling needs were affected by: • Enrollment status (CCSD could only see enrolled students).

• Ability to pay for a Gold Card (if not enrolled, students had to purchase a Gold Card).

• Whether or not the student physically lived in North Carolina (CCSD counselors cannot provide services outside North Carolina without licensure in a particular state).

• Students living at home reported that their living environments were not conducive to receiving services.

Campus Living Residence Life

Mission Student Affairs provides programs and services that optimize student learning and leadership, builds a safe, supportive and welcoming campus community, fosters the emotional growth and personal development of students, and makes a positive contribution to the overall student experience.

• Pivoted fall 2020 move-in operations to an early move-in process while developing new COVID-19 policies in the residence halls.

• Moved 5,020 students over a 10-day period in a safe, healthy manner into the residence halls for the start of the 2020 fall semester.

• Less than two weeks later, 4,306 students moved out of the residence halls during two major move-out periods in August and September.

• All students granted an exemption to stay on campus for the fall semester were relocated from

Central and West End neighborhoods to the College Hill neighborhood during Labor Day weekend.

Dining Services • Operating under COVID-19 protocols, Dining Services continued to feed students in isolation and quarantine locations. This service included breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as operating the C-store (POD Market) to provide service to students for snacks, essentials and beverages.

• Dining Services instituted “to-go” meals and containers for safety reasons, which impacted sustainability efforts. Dining Services no longer engaged in composting efforts that were diverting significant pounds of trash from local landfills.

• Todd Dining Hall remained open to provide meal options for students living on campus, but the number of meal swipes greatly reduced to 47,034 (compared to second quarter fall 2019, which equaled 335,998).

Dean of Students (DOS) DOS staff helped lead the isolation/quarantine housing process, as well as communication regarding self-reports and faculty notification, while offering academic support and resources to students.

Disability Support Services (DSS) DSS proctored a much lower number of exams than in previous semesters due to the pandemic but continued with outreach to faculty to ensure that students continued to receive accommodation in the virtual environment.

CHALLENGES Greek Life • Virtual operations continued to negatively impact the ability to gather accurate information from chapters and individual members, particularly forms related to chapter rosters. This resulted in chapter rosters missing a significant number of members who joined in fall 2020 and spring 2021.

The ability to produce accurate membership and grade reports was compromised.

• Overall contacts via New Student Orientation decreased significantly. In 2019, Greek Life connected with more than 1,000 students and parents during in-person sessions. In 2020, the number greatly decreased to approximately 150 students and parents.

Student Rights and Responsibilities (OSRR) • OSRR created protocols for responding to COVID-19 related violations (face mask and gathering violations) and managed an increase of issues related to academic integrity violations (academic integrity reports, inquiries from faculty and students and academic integrity appeals).

• OSRR created a virtual environment related to educational sanctioning to ensure student success and/or organization success and to ensure equity and fairness.

Youth Programs and Camps The COVID-19 team partnered with University Counsel and others around campus to create a COVID-19 checklist and a Youth Programs and Camps Advisory Board subcommittee for reviewing COVID-19 protocols throughout the summer.

ECU Call Center Twenty Student Affairs staff members received 425 calls during the 30 hours of operation from August 24–28. The call center, along with a Facebook Live event hosted on August 23 (with over 21,000 views), were part of the divisional comprehensive

communication strategy related to ECU’s pivot to online academic delivery for the fall semester.

Unsung Heroes As the Return of Pirate Nation™ began, some staff at East Carolina University never left and paved the way for students and faculty to get back to campus. Every department on campus had workers take special steps to prepare campus for the fall semester.

Among those on the frontlines during the pandemic, director of Student Health Services (SHS) Dr. LaNika Wright and staff have been adapting to everchanging information and procedures from local, state and national health officials.

Wright helped create and update policies and protocols in preparation for the Return of Pirate Nation, while also planning for new ways to help keep students healthy.

“SHS has restructured our schedule and workflow to ensure we can keep our patients safe and provide quality care,” Wright said. “We added telehealth for some appointments and drive-thru testing to meet the needs of the students.”

Lauren Thorn, associate dean of students, started with organizing ECU’s Call Center and continued with email responses to concerned parents and students.

She helped with videos for virtual orientation and the creation of the plan for student isolation should they experience COVID-19 symptoms.

Student Engagement continues to grow on campus with 375* official student clubs and organizations.

*Many clubs/organizations temporarily transitioned to inactive status due to the pandemic.

Virtual Engagement Programming in 2020–21 shifted to a virtual format utilizing platforms such as Instagram Live, Facebook, Microsoft Teams, Webex and Zoom.

“I think part of the professional challenge is having to expedite processes on campus that typically would take us months to put in place,” Thorn said.

As an advisor for the Students’ Treasure Chest, Thorn helped with the distribution of $8.8 million in CARES Act funding to students, donations to the Student Emergency Fund and $500,000 in institutional and foundation funds that went to students.

Parent and Family Grant Program Provided by an engaged group of parent-donors, the Parents Fund Grant Program awarded $8,000 to supporting programs across campus working to support students.

A committee of parent-volunteers read applications and decided where the funds should be allocated.

STUDENT SUCCESS The success of our students is the ultimate measure of our university.

We will support excellence, expand opportunity and celebrate achievement.

SAB (Student Activities Board) offered a collaborative multi-campus concert for students. ECU led the planning committee comprising members from University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University that provided a threecampus virtual concert for thousands of students.

New Student Orientation hosted 16 virtual, synchronous sessions between June 8–July 1 with 3,984 students registering for these sessions.

Using Microsoft Teams, students and parents attended sessions that included a welcome, faculty expectations, academic advising and provided an opportunity to also meet in small groups with an orientation assistant twice throughout the day.

Various breakout sessions were held so students and guests could gain additional information in areas of interest outside the classroom.

CCSD staff and DOS staff collaborated to provide therapeutic support for managing stress for those in quarantine and isolation during the spring 2021 semester. This included short videos, handouts and information about available resources. Additionally, CCSD contributed mental health giveaway items to the “thrival kits” for students in quarantine and isolation.

Online Personal Training allowed CRW staff to provide services for the ECU distance education population, which also helped them feel more connected to the ECU community. #ECUKindnessChallenge week held in October was adapted from the Kindness Challenges created by Pirate Read author Jamil Zaki. Challenges designed to build empathy included Be Kind to Yourself, Spend Kindly, Disagree Better, KindTech and Be a Culture Builder. Each daily challenge included an action item for participants. Throughout the week, students attended a workshop entitled “Exercising Empathy and Cultivating Compassion” presented by CCSD; wrote letters to be shared with elementary school students and elderly in assisted living in partnership with Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement (CLCE); made donations to the Purple Pantry; and used technology to spread kindness by sharing notes of thanks and appreciation to Student Health for their work throughout the pandemic.

Student Workers Within the Division Polar Bear Plunge, held on February 25, 2021, saw 375 jumpers enter the pool during a seven-hour period. Following COVID-19 protocols for safety and social distancing, this was the largest studentfocused, in-person event held on campus since the start of the pandemic and was a huge success.

The Ledonia Wright Cultural Center (LWCC) held a COVID-19 vaccination panel to provide more information to the public regarding the disease and the importance of the vaccine. The goal of this event was to dispel misinformation regarding the vaccine.

Student Health Services partnered with Environmental Health and Safety to set up multiple COVID-19 vaccination clinics at Minges Coliseum to the ECU community and the Greenville community.

Youth Programs and Camps implemented some of ECU’s first sets of virtual youth programs due to the pandemic.

The Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement (CLCE) partnered with ECU Football to host a series of Civic Engagement Days to educate student athletes about the election process, their options for registration as a college student and assisted most of the team with their registration to vote.

At the beginning of 2021, the Purple Pantry established the first mini-pantry on ECU’s Main Campus near the Old Cafeteria Complex and Mamie Jenkins Building.

Campus Recreation and Wellness visitors

Campus Living, in partnership with University Wastewater Water-Based Epidemiology, represented one of a handful of universities using wastewater of residence halls to determine viral presence of COVID-19. The staff of Campus Living-Covid Operations participated in weekly meetings to review results with Brody School of Medicine.

The first-ever LGBTQ crowdfunding campaign was conducted January 30 through March 15 in celebration of the 10th anniversary of the Dr. Jesse R. Peel LGBTQ Center. The campaign set a record for the university, raising just over $36,000 (against an original goal of $15,000).

Program of the Year — DEI Virtual Discussion Series Student Involvement and Leadership (SIL) created a Diversity, Equity and Inclusion committee, in response to the unjust treatment of minoritized communities within the U.S., by developing opportunities for dialogue and discourse, accountability and increased visibility within the ECU community.

This program optimizes student learning and leadership, builds a safe, supportive and welcoming community and/or fosters emotional growth and personal development.

Additionally, this award recognizes a program that makes a positive contribution to the overall student experience.

SUSTAINABILITY and RESOURCE STEWARDSHIP The Center for Counseling and Student Development (CCSD) converted to a new online safety education module for first-year students called “MyStudentBody.” This program provided education to students regarding alcohol, prescription and other drugs and sexual violence prevention education. As a result of this change, CCSD and Student Affairs were able to realize a savings of approximately $50,000 per year due to the conversion.

DIVERSITY and

INCLUSION

Campus Recreation and Wellness partnered with Les Mills OnDemand to offer on-demand fitness programs and movement opportunities to the ECU community, providing access to more than 1,000 workouts across nine free programs for 30 days.

Utilizing an opportunity with an existing partnership, CRW was able to offer added value to their programs and services with no additional operational or personnel costs to the department.

The Dr. Jesse R. Peel LGBTQ Center marked its 10th anniversary with a virtual PRIDE 2021 ceremony on January 27. ECU first founded the LGBT Resource Office in 2011, and in 2019, the office became the Dr. Jesse R. Peel LGBTQ Center, which has grown to become the largest center of its kind in the UNC System. The Peel LGBTQ Center now hosts more than 7,000 student visits each academic year.

Pirate Media 1 partnered with the Ledonia Wright Cultural Center on a virtual panel discussion titled In Living Color: Journalism in the Age of Black Lives Matter. The event is aimed at fostering open dialogue and deeper understanding among communities of color and local and national representatives of the media industry. The objective was to highlight the importance of cultural competence within the media industry and media literacy among the public during this period of racial reckoning.

During resident advisor (RA) training, Campus Living offered “identity circles” where they coordinated a time for students to gather and talk. Three groups/ circles were created — one for students who identified as LGBTQ, one for students who identified as BIPOC and one for students who were allies for these two groups.

Hall coordinators provided time for the residence hall teams to have meaningful discussions about the racial climate of our country during a specific period in time as it related to social justice issues such as Black Lives Matter, white supremacy, immigration, etc. Talking points, suggestions and resources were provided during these discussions.

For the second consecutive year, the Peel LGBTQ Center participated in the national Jazz and Friends National Day of School and Community Readings in support of trans and nonbinary youth. Despite the event being held virtually, volunteer readers from campus and the community, including Peel LGBTQ Center student-volunteers, ECU faculty and community members, recorded their readings of children’s books.

COLLABORATIONS and SCHOLARLY ACTIVITY During the year, Student Affairs staff participated in more than 300 virtual scholarly presentations and publications with external professional organizations. This activity was performed at the state, regional, national and international levels.

Career Services partnered with the ECU Alumni Association to provide a digital feed of full-time positions that were posted within the alumni networking platform called ECU Connect. A total of 13,174 positions were posted, and 7,207 alumni viewed these webpages.

The Well-Being Team collaborated with Human Resources to create a “30 Days of Active Living” program that resulted in 344 faculty and staff receiving 30 days of programming designed to help them live an active lifestyle while working from home.

Dean of Students (DOS) Office • HOIST (Helping Our Students Thrive) partnered with the University Writing Center and the Office for Faculty Excellence in offering a series of workshops centered around creating a broader mental support network for ECU students.

The wastewater team partnered with those across the university who utilized available data to make decisions regarding student housing testing and monitoring.

Higher Education Emergency Relief Fund (HEERF) grants distribution partnered with the Cashier’s, Financial Aid and University Scholarships offices to create a process for distributing HEERF grants and generated a form for collecting relevant information.

The Women and Gender Office (WGO) partnered with the Office for Equity and Diversity and THRIVE@ECU to host a virtual keynote for Women’s Herstory Month and International Women’s Day. The virtual keynote, titled “Anti-Racist Feminism is the Medicine for Our Survival,” was presented by Lutze Segu, a Black feminist thinker, practitioner and scholar.

The WGO also partnered with THRIVE@ECU for an in-person screening of the documentary Picture a Scientist, followed by a panel of women faculty who discussed the realities and challenges of being a woman in the STEM fields.

Student Affairs and Eastern AHEC partnered on a face mask project for campus and the Greenville community utilizing a large grant received from the state of North Carolina to promote wearing masks.

Short videos were developed and distributed to a variety of ECU media platforms as well as locally to the community through television, social media and streaming services

LOOKING AHEAD — NEW INITIATIVES Wellness Hubs The ECU Financial Wellness Hub provides financial education, coaching and resources that empower our students to make better decisions, foster better relationships and build better communities.

The ECU Well-Being Hub allows students and staff to discover the five elements of wellbeing (career, social, financial, physical and community), explore resources to help one thrive, and live a healthy lifestyle full of purpose, resilience and vitality.

Center for Counseling and Student Development Expands Services The Center for Counseling and Student Development is expanding services through My SSP to increase counseling support and resources for students.

Call. Chat. Anytime. Anywhere. My SSP connects students with free, confidential mental health and well-being support, conveniently available 24/7 via the My SSP app, telephone and web. All services at ECU CCSD are confidential and free of charge for ECU students.

ECU renamed two campus buildings in honor of former chancellors Steve Ballard and Richard Eakin during a ceremony November 5 at the Main Campus Student Center. The Student Recreation Center is now the Richard R. and JoAnn M. Eakin Student Recreation Center. Gateway Hall is now Steve and Nancy Ballard Hall. Both Ballard’s and Eakin’s namesake buildings are significant to their time at the university, where they served as chancellors for 12 years and 14 years, respectively.

First-Generation Students ECU has received the First-gen Forward designation, a national honor for commitment to first-generation student success. The Center for First-generation Student Success, an initiative of NASPA and The Suder Foundation, recently announced the 2021-22 First-gen Forward cohort. Selected institutions receive professional development, community-building experiences and a first look at the center’s research and resources. Through this opportunity, ECU will continue to improve experiences and outcomes for first-generation students.

Dr. Philip Rogers became the 12th chancellor of ECU in March 2021.
