No one knew when the 2019–20 academic year

started in early August that we (WE at East Carolina University® and the collective WE across this nation) would be facing the most difficult and challenging times in higher education in nearly a century. COVID-19 has stretched, stressed, tested and demanded more from our leadership, faculty, staff and, of course, our students and families.

This pandemic forced an unprecedented halt to oncampus operations in March and canceled major events such as spring athletics, Barefoot on the Mall and spring commencement. We were forced to create a virtual world that would provide some semblance of “normal” for Pirate Nation™ all the while knowing COVID-19 created a world that was anything but normal.

During my 30 years in higher education, I have witnessed amazing teams in action, especially when faced with adversity (e.g., hurricanes, winter storms, elections, etc.), but I feel compelled to recognize the herculean efforts

by Student Affairs educators during 2019–20. We were forced to close our residence halls and convert Student Health Services to a fully operational triage facility serving hundreds of students daily for several months straight. We have transitioned programs and services from face-to-face to virtual environments in pretty much every department in the division, from Counseling to Student Activities and Orientation to Campus Recreation and Wellness.

With a volatile political season leading to an election and the constant presence of COVID-19, our future remains uncertain. Our financial health is facing epic uphill challenges that have already included furloughs and hiring freezes. The loss in revenue, largely from housing and dining, for one semester has been in the tens of millions. The mental health strain on our divisional staff is high, and the mental health impacts on our students are skyrocketing to all-time highs for counseling appointments including new and returning clients. And this is even as we transitioned our counseling services to primarily teletherapy.

We recognize our staff must focus on flexibility, adaptability, cooperation and collegiality in the year ahead. There will be more challenges ahead. We stand strong against COVID-19. We seek new and better ways to deliver our programs and services to our students. The obstacles appear to be daunting, but we continue to rise to every occasion.

In this annual report, we will showcase some of the impacts from the pandemic, but it’s important to spotlight the successes and accomplishments from the first seven months of 2019–20 before COVID-19 forever changed our educational landscape.

COVID-19 seemed to define much of spring 2020, but we also faced other global challenges such as the civil unrest and demonstrations following the killings of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor and too many others. And even in a virtual world, ECU and Student Affairs were able to host multiple social justice discussions about systemic racism and how it has impacted our campus community. We started the conversations, and it’s imperative that Student Affairs leads the way to help the dialogue continue and ensure positive actions are taken.

COVID-19 RESPONSE The COVID-19 Call Center was operational from 8 a.m.–4 p.m. for nine straight business days in March to answer questions from students, parents and families about the impacts to campus. Receiving more than 2,100 calls, Student Affairs staff did an amazing job with customer service during very challenging times.

Transitioning Services Campus Living

Campus Living responded in an era that included a shutdown, two move-outs, and emergency housing for a small group of students. We planned, communicated and executed a shutdown and extended move-out for over 5,000 residents. Students either moved out in March or left their belongings in place to move out in mid-May. Campus Living then worked with the cashier’s office and finance teams to provide a prorated refund to those students who moved out. During summer school, Campus Living housed a limited number of student-athletes. All summer conference operations were canceled. Staff left campus on March 26 and returned in late June to prepare for an early fall 2020 semester start.

Center for Counseling and Student Development (CCSD)

Center for Counseling and Student Development staff transitioned to remote phone counseling services for students within hours of having to close the office for staff self-isolation due to a potential exposure to COVID-19. Staff completed trainings in ethical provisions of teletherapy services, and our clinical coordinator converted all forms and procedures to a virtual format allowing video services to be available to students within approximately two weeks.

CCSD collaborated with Athletics on screenings they were using to touch base with their student-athletes and in making referrals for students in need of immediate assessment. CCSD also provided web-based/practical strategies and education to Athletics regarding coping with stress, anxiety and change during COVID-19.

Disability Support Services (DSS)

During the third and fourth quarters, coaching was provided by our Disability Support Services staff and graduate assistants, both in person and online, to students who struggle with executive function.

Coaching supports student success through time management and study skills instruction and was essential for students during the transition to online learning. We also created a new resource page on the DSS website for students and faculty during the transition to online learning.

COVID-19 RESPONSE

Hospitality Services

Four programs converted their youth programming efforts to an online platform during the summer of 2020. Their commitment to creating new and safe online opportunities for minors has been astounding.

Purple Pantry

Purple Pantry pivoted in-person operations to a pop-up pantry during move-out at the end of March and to mobile pantry operations during the remainder of the spring semester.

To help reduce barriers to student success by addressing students’ unmet financial needs such as food insecurity, Purple Pantry transitioned operations and distributed Pirate Pack emergency kits to provide students with food, hygiene items and household supplies.

Student Health Services

One of the greatest successes for Student Health Services this quarter was the implementation of telehealth in such a short period of time. Within one weekend, we had a plan in place and were able to maintain continuity of care. Our staff also implemented drive-through COVID-19 testing for outreach and for clinic spaces.

Student Media

Despite the closure of campus and the inability to work together onsite, Pirate Media 1’s online publications were able to provide students and the surrounding community with consistent updates and developments on the local impact of COVID-19 as well as the protests and unrest resulting from the killing of George Floyd. The East Carolinian produced more than 200 COVID-19-related articles from March–June.

Transit

Transit employees helped move students out of their dorms amid the COVID-19 crisis. ECU Transit also participated in the Purple Pantry drive alongside the College of Engineering and Technology, where 815 pounds of food was donated.

OF CARES ACT FUNDING WAS DISTRIBUTED IN THE MEANS OF 7,841 AWARDS Student Veteran Services awarded over $13,000 in emergency funds to 21 students in need due to COVID-19.

The average award was $649.

Programming New Student Orientation

New Student Orientation transitioned to being delivered fully online instead of the on-campus two-day program. The online version became a multistep process, providing an opportunity for incoming students to learn about ECU and the programs and services offered to aid in their success.

A series of online modules and live events using social media platforms, WebEx and Canvas were held throughout June, July and August. Incoming students were able to connect with current ECU students to answer questions.

Career Services

As a response to the current state of our world and ECU graduates facing an uncertain job market, ECU Career Services created two events to help students — specifically, ECU seniors — cope with and manage their job search.

The Just-in-Time Job Search Workshop was held virtually in April with a total of 29 participants.

The Senior Resume Drop allowed ECU seniors the opportunity to upload their resumes in Handshake, and Career Services shared the resumes with hiring employers. A total of 495 students registered and participated in this event, and Career Services shared their resumes with over 3,000 employers electronically.

COVID-19 RESPONSE

Campus Recreation and Wellness

Personal training continued to deliver an average of 50 programmed workouts to clients each week.

62 participants enrolled in online small-group training and completed a total of 118 workouts with a 50% average exercise compliance.

1,019 people participated in online group fitness classes March 16– April 30 with an average class size of 29. The average cost per head (CPH) was $0.55 during this time.

55 Pirates also activated their unique Les Mills On Demand account in a two-week timespan.

Therapeutic Thursday programs transitioned online and had a total of 342 engagements.

Student Activities and Organizations

SAB revamped the 42nd Barefoot on the Mall to a virtual format (Barefoot on the Gram), which was still held on the last day of classes — April 28 — to give students a celebratory opportunity to connect with their peers and have some fun. The event featured a digital caricature artist using Zoom, a live magic and comedy show using YouTube Live, trivia using an agencies platform, and a virtual dance party featuring a DJ who has been a student favorite all year long. It was very well-received, and while this year did not end as expected for our graduating SAB student leaders, it still allowed them to end the year on a very positive note.

Parent and Family Grant Program Provided by an engaged group of parent-donors, the Parent and Family Grant Program allowed offices and departments to request money from the Parents Fund for worthy initiatives across campus. Almost $9,000 was awarded to five different areas on campus in 2019–2020.

National Hazing Prevention Week (NHPW) is a nationwide event that

takes place on college campuses across North America. In September, ECU made this a campuswide initiative by collaborating with Athletics, Campus Recreation and Wellness, Greek Life, Student Activities and Organizations, the Office for Student Rights and Responsibilities, Student Health Services, Student Government Association, the Center for Counseling and Student Development, and the Women and Gender Office.

This initiative empowered students to come in and become a part of the solution, no matter where they stood on campus or how they were involved. The week kicked off with a video encouraging students to imagine life #InAWorldWithoutHazing. Throughout the week, activities included busting hazing myths, a banner signing and brainstorming hazing alternatives. A total of 800 students attended events throughout the week, and an additional 1,400 attended the keynote program featuring Evelyn Piazza and Kathleen Wiant — mothers who lost their sons while being hazed at their respective universities.

Student Veteran Services held a grand reopening in September 2019 of the Student Veteran Services lounge, located in Room 254 of the Mendenhall Building. The lounge features a large social space, a quiet study room with computers and free printing, free coffee and a textbook lending library. Student-veterans and their dependents can use this space to meet other students with similar life experiences and learn about available resources on campus, as well as get assistance with their federal Veterans Affairs benefits.

The Office of Student Transitions hosted the seventh annual Consider This Sophomore/Faculty Dinner.

Attending the event were 60 students and 30 faculty and staff, representing an 84% increase in participation compared to 2018. Guest speaker P.J. Connelly, an ECU alumnus and Greenville mayor, had a candid conversation with attendees about his journey to success — what he started out to do and how he ended up achieving his current success. He encouraged students to keep an open mind and pointed out that considering another path to success is not a sign of failure. He went on to tell students not to be afraid to move outside their comfort zone, as that bravery could lead to greatness. He reminded students that not everyone would support them, but this is not a signal to give up. Failures will happen, but it is part of the experience. The mayor finished his conversation by encouraging students to invest in their dreams, stay the course and keep moving forward.

Student Veteran Services held its annual Storm the Stadium event in March 2020 with a record number of participants (172).

Megan Leavey, a well-known combat veteran and recipient of the Purple Heart, addressed 90 people from both campus and the community during a September 2019 visit.

Record Numbers at ECU Career Fairs The 2019 Fall Job and Internship Fair and the Engineering, Technology and Management Career Fair, both held in October 2019,

were attended by 778 students and alumni, and 209 attendees secured on-campus interviews. Nearly 120 employers representing 36 industries participated at the career fair, and 75% of the organizations conducted student interviews the following day.

The 2020 Spring Job and Internship Fair was attended by 567 students and alumni. A total of 109 employers representing 34 industries were hosted at the career fair.

SERVE THE PUBLIC We will demonstrate our commitment to service by being engaged with the needs of eastern North Carolina and beyond.

The nonpartisan Pirates Vote team in the Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement (CLCE) worked hard to register student voters at multiple voter registration drives on both Main and Health Sciences campuses. In 2020, they worked even harder to ensure that primary voting went smoothly in the Main Campus Student Center and that students, faculty, staff and community members took advantage of the location.

In total, 1,763 people voted at the student center site during one-stop early voting for the 2020 primary, which is 14.1% of all voters in the county. When compared to the Willis Building location in the 2016 primary, this is a 4.7% increase. The Main Campus Student Center also had the largest turnout for ages 18–25 (70.6%) in the county.

Prior to the impacts from COVID-19, 10 Residential Scholars traveled during spring break to Puerto Rico, where they volunteered with Stronger Than Maria, an organization formed to help with recovery for those affected by Hurricane Maria. The scholars helped refurbish one home and one business by putting up new walls and scraping and repainting the interior and exterior of these buildings.

Training Opportunities for Faculty, Staff and Students Career Advocate Network

The Career Advocate Network is available for faculty and staff who are interested in learning about the exclusive resources and tools provided by Career Services that assist ECU students in their career development to prepare them with the knowledge, skills and values to succeed in a global, multicultural society.

Green Dot Training

Green Dot is a comprehensive violence-prevention program intended to train faculty, staff and students to endorse, model and support two central values: Power-based personal violence is not tolerated in our campus community.

Everyone will do their part to prevent violence.

Green Zone Training

Green Zone Training teaches students, faculty and staff to better serve student-veterans at ECU, as well as provides guidance to medical students to help them better serve veteran patients in the future.

Modeled after Safe Zone, the Pirate Ally Training offers students an engaging, educational conversation about the lives of LGBTQ students on campus and highlights the importance of acceptance and understanding among their peers.

Safe Zone Training creates a network of allies who are willing to talk to students and colleagues about sexual orientation, gender identity and gender expression.

Trainings are offered to ECU faculty and staff and include a panel of students who share their experiences as members of the LGBTQ community on campus.

LEAD TRANSFORMATIONAL CHANGE Through partnership, leadership and discovery, we will be a force for progress and growth in the region and beyond.

Over 725 employees are hired to work the ECU ARAMARK account via Dining Services. This employee pool is largely generated from the local Greenville area. These employees learn transferable skills related to the food industry.

On-Campus Conferences Central Reservations

Central Reservations hosted the ninth annual Southeastern Regional Series25 conference, bringing together users of 25Live from 18 schools around the region. Attendees were given a tour of the new Main Campus Student Center, took photos of many highlights in the building and shared their excitement about taking fresh ideas back to their respective campuses.

Hospitality Services

Hospitality Services hosted 19 camps and conferences with over 1,150 participants, ranging from youth music camps to adult writing camps.

Office of Student Transitions

The Office of Student Transitions hosted the seventh annual Student Success Conference in January and welcomed approximately 265 staff, faculty and community college colleagues. The theme was “Vision 2020: The Big Idea in Higher Education” with the focus on discussing the future of higher education on campuses across the state and nation. The keynote speaker was Dr. Harold Martin, chancellor of North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University in Greensboro, North Carolina. A total of 22 workshops were offered to participants.

Intercultural Affairs

Intercultural Affairs hosted the second annual North Carolina LGBTQ+ Higher Education Drive-In conference in July 2019. Participants included representatives from UNC Greensboro, UNC-Chapel Hill, Duke, Wake Forest, UNC Charlotte and North Carolina State University. The conference included an evening reception and a daylong series of professional development topics.

Student Media

Student Media hosted the statewide College Media Association conference in February in the Main Campus Student Center. The event was attended by more than 100 media students from more than a dozen universities around the state, and our program walked away with eight state awards.

SUSTAINABILITY and

RESOURCE STEWARDSHIP Pirate Media 1 made the decision to reduce the number of annual print publications in the

magazine division from six to four and print production of The East Carolinian from two times a week to once a week. This decision is in line with trends among student media programs across the country, as ad sales revenue declines and the demand for more immediate digital content increases. It is anticipated this will result in approximately a 35% reduction in overall printing costs.

The Office of Student Rights and Responsibilities has essentially become virtual by eliminating paper usage in their office. This includes all documents and case files associated with conduct board hearings, tablet purchases for hearings to avoid printing packets and case files that are now being reviewed by students and attorneys through a paperless/online format.

In addition, Student Health Services has officially become a green office per the Sustainability office on campus by doubling the amount of recycling in their area.

ECU Transit continues the use of compressed natural gas vehicles within the fleet, supporting a

more eco-friendly operation. ECU Transit also continues to support the use of hybrid vehicles and has two electric golf carts in the fleet, creating additional options for customers seeking smaller vehicles to transport to less-accessible areas. The golf carts can be used for parking shuttles, door-to-door service, and other special needs of the university.

The Student Affairs Technology Services (SATS) Team coordinated the rollout of Adobe Creative

Cloud and Adobe Acrobat Pro via the new ITCS purchasing process for 10 different areas in the division that included 29 licenses of Creative Cloud and 50 licenses of Acrobat Pro.

The Creative Cloud license cost decreased from $179 to $44 per year, with the total cost decreasing from $5,216 to $1,276 for 29 licenses, resulting in a savings of $3,940 per year. Acrobat Pro decreased from $74 to $10, with the total cost decreasing from $3,745 to $500 for 50 licenses.

This resulted in a savings of $3,245 per year.

Combined, this conversion by SATS resulted in a $7,186 savings during the year.

ECU Dining Services implemented a plan to decrease waste in the dining halls. Managers

inputted waste following each meal period into a software system called Leanpath. Pre- and post-service production waste is weighed following each meal service to identify waste that can be decreased. This information fuels the production cycle from ordering to inventory.

DIVERSITY at ECU

We Gather is an intimate dinner-anddialogue event designed to foster sisterhood on campus between African American administrators, faculty members and college women. The aim of the dinner is to address specific stressors and developmental concerns that stem from being a Black woman at a predominantly white institution while providing a safe space for women to show up authentically and honestly. The event took place in spring 2020 and was created as a follow-up to the Center for Counseling and Student Development therapy group Sister Circle, established by ECU counselor education student Chanale Propst, who also interns in Campus Recreation and Wellness.

In October 2019, a group of approximately 30

American Sign Language students attended a

silent dinner at Mellow Mushroom in Greenville. This event gave students the opportunity to meet deaf and hard-ofhearing individuals from the community and use their skills learned in the classroom in a native environment. Silent Socials allow students to engage in the guiding principles of learning a foreign language known as the 5 C’s of FLED (Foreign Language Education). These competencies are communication, cultures, connections, comparisons and

communities. In addition to the students, approximately 10 others from the Greenville/Pitt County community attended.

Career Services partnered with the Ledonia Wright Cultural Center and the Women and Gender Office to discuss gender equality in the workplace. This workshop provided knowledge about equal opportunities for promotion, pay increase and inclusion in the decision-making process. Employee resources were also provided.

A total of 75 students attended the workshop.

Hospitality Services hosted two sessions of an LGBTQ youth camp on campus in summer 2019. These groups were able to connect with the Dr. Jesse R. Peel LBGTQ Center and utilize space in A.J. Fletcher Recital Hall during their time on campus.

Student Health Services (SHS) has successfully expanded its transgender services by offering consultations for transition-related care, appointments for hormone therapy initiation/refills, pharmacy services for prescription medications, and lab services to perform bloodwork to help monitor a patient’s therapy. They can also administer hormone therapy shots and teach patients how to self-inject, potentially saving time and money by doing it affordably and conveniently. SHS staff can help with referrals for surgical intervention or if a patient is graduating, they can help establish outside providers to continue patients’ plans of care.

A new podcast series titled Beyond the Lines by Campus Recreation and Wellness showcased a student in the LGBTQ community and his coming-out story. Other features included a transgender female and her experiences with participating in sorority recruitment.

SCHOLARLY ACTIVITY During the year, Student Affairs staff participated in 106 scholarly presentations and publications with external professional organizations. This activity was performed at the state, regional, national and international levels.

Career Services collaborated with the Office of Undergraduate Admissions during MADE

Intercultural Affairs units the Ledonia Wright Cultural Center and the Women and Gender Office through partnership with the College of Fine Arts and Communication hosted a reading of For Colored Girls. The performance highlighted issues of domestic violence and mental health within communities of women of color. The program provided space for a student-director to lead and showcase their talent along with their fellow female students of color.

(Multicultural Appreciation Day Experience), an event providing an opportunity to meet with current high school and transfer students to educate them on the benefits of experiential education and ECU Career Services resources, in addition to tips on how to navigate their career development as an ECU student. More than 200 prospective students attended the event.

In August 2019, Campus Recreation and Wellness Adventure Leadership Team provided boats and equipment for 70 people to assist with the Splash Bash Adaptive Water Sports Day on the Pamlico River in Washington. The annual event is a collaboration between the nonprofit STAR (Support Team for Active Recreation) and ECU’s recreational therapy program.

Tunnel of Oppression is an immersive, intentional and interactive experience that aims to raise awareness of issues on privilege and oppression by presenting scenes grounded in real-world, lived experiences and to provide a space for dialogue and reflection on social justice issues.

Over 200 students attended this event sponsored by Campus Living in partnership with the Ledonia Wright Cultural Center, the Center for Leadership and Civic Engagement, the Dr. Jesse R. Peel LGBTQ Center, Campus Recreation and Wellness, the Office for Equity and Diversity, the Center for Counseling and Student Development, the Women and Gender Office, and the Department for Disability Support Services. Each participating office embodied a different marginalized group for our students to experience.

LOOKING AHEAD Student Health Services worked closely with the Center for Counseling and Student Development to begin a naloxone program to offer Narcan to students free of charge to help reduce opioid overdose. This program is funded entirely by the ECU Student Affairs Substance Use Priority Fund, a donor-driven fund that supports prevention, harm reduction, early intervention and recovery supports on campus.

Narcan is a needle-free nasal spray without need for assembly, is designed for community use, and does not require specialized training. Narcan has no adverse side effects on those who do not need it.

ECU joins more than a dozen other universities across the country with similar programs, including UNC-Chapel Hill.

The ECU Collegiate Recovery Community has provided funding for all ECU Police officers to carry Narcan while on duty since 2014.

Career Services, in partnership with the Office of Student Transitions, has implemented a new module for all COAD 1000 students using the career

exploration software called Virtual Job Shadow.

Utilizing a new component of the software called Flex Lessons, all enrolled COAD 1000 students (1,370) were added to the system and assigned a career exploration module that promotes self-assessment, career exploration and reflection.

Greene Hall resident advisors and hall government, under the leadership of RA Jacob Heintze, created a

community service program called Greene Giving. The concept began by tabling at different

locations around campus to collect Purple Bucks and Gold Bucks from students. In just two weeks, Heintze and the hall government leaders were able to collect a total of $2,000 from over 350 students. These funds were then used to invite first responders from around Greenville to a dinner on Feb. 12, 2020, in West End Dining Hall.

A sponsored meal was provided to the 30 first responders who were in attendance that evening. During that time, residents and leaders from Greene Hall personally thanked them for their service to the community. The remaining funds were used to create dining cards that were then donated to the Veteran Affairs office to give to students who have or are currently serving our country.

Celebrating Paint It Purple Fridays has been an ECU tradition for many years. In the past, it has been observed more often during football season than throughout the year. In 2019–2020, we reinvigorated the tradition with events and activities to boost year-round participation throughout Pirate Nation. Whether on campus, in Greenville, or anywhere in the world, we want everyone in the ECU community to wear purple every Friday.

Campus Recreation and Wellness kicked off their newest project, a podcast titled Beyond the Lines. The first season dove into some sensitive topics that college students may struggle to talk about such as alcohol, drug abuse, sexual abuse and self-harm. The first episode aired in January 2020 with Rachel Maynard as the first guest, who talked about the issues she dealt with early in her college career and how she overcame those obstacles.

New episodes are released biweekly on Spotify, Google Play and iTunes. The podcast is also available at crw.ecu. edu/about-us/podcast.
