Welcome to Florence!

A preface to the 7th CPCE General Assembly in Florence by President Thomas Wipf.

Dear Delegates and Guests of the General Assembly in Florence, our honoured readers throughout Europe!

With this edition of focus we would like to present you with things worth knowing about the CPCE General Assembly and our conference city of Florence. focus #16 deliberately departs a little from the usual contents, but after all we do not have a General Assembly every day.

This, the largest assembly of European Protestantism and at the same time the governing forum of CPCE, meets roughly every six years to receive and discuss the findings of doctrinal conversations, working groups and study projects. In its second part the Assembly looks strategically towards the coming years, decides on future emphases and work programmes and elects a new council. At every General Assembly, and so too in Florence, a large place is given to meeting the local protestant churches. We are grateful for the hospitality of the Waldensian, Lutheran and Methodist Churches of Italy and the energetic support of many local workers. The joint celebration of services in their various traditions will make us aware of the diversity of the protestant life of faith and strengthen our fellowship.

CPCE has world-wide links, among others with the Fellowship of Middle East Evangelical Churches (FMEEC), based in Beirut. We rejoice to welcome to the General Assembly Rosangela Jarjour, the General Secretary of FMEEC . An invitation from FMEEC gave me the opportunity this year to visit both the Lebanon and Iran and meet together with sisters and brothers of the protestant churches there. I invite you to read the reports in this number for some impression of aspects

of the protestant life of faith in the Near East. Rosangela Jarjour’s contribution reached us in August 2012 from the tense atmosphere in the FMEEC office in Beirut – the present developments in Syria have immediate impact on this neighbouring country and many are afraid for the well-being of their relatives. We understand the invitation to Ms. Jarjour as a sign of our solidarity with the protestant churches in the Middle East.

Liebe Delegierte und Gäste der Vollversammlung in Florenz, sehr geehrte Leserinnen und Leser in ganz Europa!

Mit dieser Ausgabe des focus möchten wir Ihnen Wissenswertes rund um die Vollversammlung der GEKE und unsere Konferenzstadt Florenz präsentieren. focus #16 weicht bewusst ein wenig von den gewohnten Inhalten ab, aber schließlich ist nicht alle Tage Vollversammlung.

Diese größte Versammlung des europäischen Protestantismus, gleichzeitig Entscheidungsorgan der GEKE, tritt etwa alle sechs Jahre zusammen, um die Ergebnisse von Lehrgesprächen, Arbeitsgruppen und Studien entgegenzunehmen und zu diskutieren.

Im zweiten Teil der Versammlung richtet sich die GEKE strategisch auf die nächsten Jahre aus, legt Schwerpunkte und Arbeitsprogramm fest und wählt einen neuen Rat. Bei jeder Vollversammlung, so auch in Florenz, wird der Begegnung mit den örtlichen protestantischen Kirchen breiter Raum gewidmet. Wir sind

dankbar für die Gastfreundschaft der Waldenserkirche, der Evangelisch-Lutherischen und der EvangelischMethodistischen Kirche von Italien und für die tatkräftige Unterstützung durch viele Mitarbeiter und Mitarbeiterinnen vor Ort. Das gemeinsame Feiern von Gottesdiensten in den unterschiedlichen Traditionen soll uns die Vielfalt protestantischen Glaubenslebens bewusst machen und unsere Gemeinschaft stärken.

Die GEKE ist weltweit vernetzt – u.a. mit der Fellowship of Middle East Evangelical Churches FMEEC mit Sitz in Beirut. Wir freuen uns, die Generalsekretärin der FMEEC, Rosangela Jarjour an der Vollversammlung zu begrüßen. Auf Einladung der FMEEC hatte ich die Möglichkeit, in diesem Jahr sowohl den Libanon, als auch den Iran zu besuchen und mit Brüdern und Schwestern der dortigen protestantischen Kirchen zusammenzutreffen. Ich lade Sie ein, die Berichte in diesem Heft für einen kleinen Eindruck über Aspekte protestantischen Glaubenslebens im Nahen Osten zu nützen. Der Beitrag von Rosangela Jarjour für den focus erreichte uns im August 2012 in angespannter Situation aus dem FMEEC-Büro im Libanon – die aktuelle Entwicklung in Syrien hat unmittelbare Auswirkungen auf das Nachbarland, viele fürchten um das Wohlergehen von Angehörigen. Die Einladung an Frau Jarjour verstehen wir als Zeichen unserer Verbundenheit mit den protestantischen Kirchen im Mittleren Osten.

Chères déléguées, chers délégués, chères invitées et chers invités de l’Assemblée générale à Florence, chères lectrices et chers lecteurs dans toute l’Europe!

Dans ce numéro de focus, nous souhaitons vous présenter des informations utiles sur l’Assemblée générale de la CEPE et notre ville de réunion, Florence. focus #16 s’écarte ainsi quelque peu de ses contenus habituels,

mais après tout ce n’est pas tous les jours qu’a lieu Assemblée générale.

La plus grande Assemblée, du protestantisme européen, et simultanément organe de décision de la CEPE, se réunit tous les six ans environ, afin de recevoir et discuter les conclusions de groupes d’entretiens doctrinaux, de groupes de travail, et d’études. Dans la deuxième partie de l’Assemblée, la CEPE s’oriente en vue des années à venir, établit des priorités et un programme de travail, et élit son nouveau Conseil. A chaque Assemblée générale, donc à Florence aussi, une large place est faite à la rencontre avec les Églises protestantes sur place. Nous sommes reconnaissants de l’hospitalité de l’Église Évangélique Vaudoise, de l’Église Évangélique Luthérienne et de l’Église Évangélique Méthodiste en Italie, et du soutien dynamique de tant de collaboratrices et collaborateurs sur place. La célébration commune de cultes dans les diverses traditions doit nous rendre conscients de la diversité de vie de la foi protestante et renforcer notre communion.

La CEPE est en réseau avec le monde entier – notamment avec la Fellowship of Middle East Evangelical Churches FMEEC, dont le siège est à Beyrouth. Nous nous réjouissons de saluer la secrétaire générale de la FMEEC, Rosangela Jarjour, à l’Assemblée générale. A l’invitation de la FMEEC, j’ai eu la possibilité de visiter cette année tant le Liban que l’Iran, et de rencontrer des frères et sœurs des Églises protestantes locales. Je vous invite à utiliser les rapports publiés dans ce numéro pour avoir une petite impression des aspects de vie de la foi protestante au Proche et au Moyen-Orient. La contribution de Rosangela Jarjour au focus nous est parvenue en août 2012, dans une situation tendue pour le bureau de la FMEEC au Liban – les développements actuels en Syrie ont des effets immédiats sur son voisin, et beaucoup craignent pour la sécurité de proches. L’invitation à Madame Jarjour se comprend comme un signe de notre lien aux Églises protestantes au Moyen-Orient.

„Die mediale Marginalisierung des Protestantismus in Italien ist politischer Natur“ Interview mit Massimo Aquilante, Vorsitzender des Rates der Federazione delle chiese evangeliche in italien (FCEI).

Wer in religiösem Zusammenhang von Italien spricht, hat in aller Regel nicht primär protestantische Kirchen im Sinn. Mit welchen Themen schaffen Sie es, sich in der Öffentlichkeit Gehör zu schaffen?

Spezifische Themen, die aus ihrer Natur die italienische Medienwelt dazu bewegt, sich an die evangelischen Kirchen in Italien zu wenden, um ihre Meinung zu erfragen oder um derselben ein Mitrederecht zu verschaffen, gibt‘s eigentlich keine.

Die zweite hängt direkt von der ersten ab: Gerade wegen dieses kulturellen Einflusses des Katholizismus konnte sich in Italien im Umgang mit dem Religiösen nie eine „weltliche“ Art und Weise der theologischen Debatte entwickeln und behaupten. Dieser Zustand hat zu einer fast inexistenten Berücksichtigung des theologischen Diskurses geführt. Debatten über religiöse Gedanken finden praktisch nicht statt. Gleichermaßen Eine bittere Beobachtung... Wie gehen die italienischen haben die italienischen Mainstream-Medien keine Protestanten damit um?

Allerdings haben die italienischen Protestanten mit nur ungenügendem Durchhaltevermögen ihre Präsenz in der Gesellschaft als auch ihre Mitbeteiligung an der Modernisierung des Landes thematisiert. Phasen von großem politischen, sozialen und kulturellem Eifer wechselten mit dem Rückzug auf interne Angelegenheiten. Dieses unstete Hin und Her hat der öffentlichen und medialen Anerkennung unserer Kirchen nicht weitergeholfen.

Welche Rolle hat in dieser Hinsicht der evangelische Kirchenbund Italiens, den Sie präsidieren?

Die Federazione delle chiese evangeliche in Italien (FCEI) hat als Grundauftrag die Pflege des einheitlichen Zeugnisses der Kirchen in der Gesellschaft, und von daher auch in der Medienlandschaft. Als FCEI haben wir im Staatsrundfunk Anspruch auf eine Fernsehsendung - „Protestantesimo-RAIDUE“, die alle zwei Wochen

Sonntags nach Mitternacht ausgestrahlt wird -, und auf eine Radioausstrahlung - „Culto Radio-RadioUNO“, jeweils Sonntag Morgens um 7.30 Uhr. Im Gegensatz zur Situation, die ich soeben geschildert habe, registrieren wir aber gute Einschaltquoten. Vor allem CultoRadio hat jede Woche über eine Million Zuhörer. Eine Tatsache, die uns freut und ermutigt, weiter zu machen.

Aber auch eine Tatsache, die unsere Analyse bestätigt: die mediale Marginalisierung des Protestantismus ist politischer Natur. Deshalb haben wir uns als FCEI in den letzten Jahren vor allem auf die Parlamentarier konzentriert, die letztlich die Verantwortung der politischen Entscheidungen tragen. An ihnen wird die demokratische Mündigkeit des Landes gemessen.

Welche Bedeutung hat für die evangelischen Kirchen in Italien die größte Versammlung des europäischen Protestantismus, die eben in Florenz stattfinden wird?

Für uns ist sie von außerordentlicher Bedeutung! Im Blick auf die Öffentlichkeitswirksamkeit wie auf die Frage der gesellschaftlichen Sensibilisierung ist die Vollversammlung von höchster Relevanz.

Nordamerika tun, hat keinen „Notizappeal“, und die Rolle, die heute die protestantischen Kirchen in Afrika, Asien oder in Südamerika spielen, wird völlig ignoriert.

Auch die momentane Einstellung des „ökumenischen Wegs“ scheint diese These der Bedeutungslosigkeit des Protestantismus zu bekräftigen.

“The Marginalisation of Protestantism in the Italian Media is Political”

Interview with Massimo Aquilante, Chair of the Council of the Federation of Protestant Churches in Italy (FCEI).

When people speak of Italy in a religious connection they don‘t usually have the protestant churches in view.

What are the themes with which you manage to gain public attention Aquilante: Off the cuff: None at all. There are really no special themes which naturally encourage the Italian media world to approach the protestant churches in Italy in order to ask their opinions or give them a voice in public debate.

A bitter observation... How do Italian Protestants cope with it?

My answer is indeed sad and distressing. But I can add at least two comments. The first has to do with the privileged position reserved for the majority church, i.e. the Roman Catholic. Even though sociological studies show very clearly that Italy too has developed into a land of religious pluralism in which membership in and sympathy for the Catholic Church are steadily shrinking, this church still remains for historical reasons a n astonishing “cultural agency”. It continues to exert an incredible influence – both on the process of developing conscience and on decisions in the area of behavioural choice. In Italy the organs of the majority church are tightly meshed with political power. Politics for its part sees the Catholic Church as the instance which best represents “Italianness” and is entitled to claim special treatment. So for example the position of the Catholic Church in the media is absolutely not comparable with those of any other, minority confessions. Newest data show that the ratio of non-catholic to exclusively catholic religious programmes in the most important national television companies is 1:40.

And the second comment?

Follows directly from the first: Just because of this cultural influence of Catholicism Italy has never been able to develop and maintain a „secular“ style of theological debate in the religious realm. This circumstance has made consideration of theological discourse almost non-existent. In effect, debates on religious ideas do not take place. At the same time the mainstream Italian media have no antennae for controversy between differing theological views. I am thinking here of ethically

relevant themes such as the beginning and end of life, but also of topics related to creation and its integrity or the role of religion in education. It gets even more difficult with the relation between faith and politics, the secular state, the building of a “public forum“. Naturally the minority confessions, such as the protestant churches – one of whose sustaining pillars is theological debate – are strongly disadvantaged everywhere here.

Protestantism seems then to be no kind of topic in the Italian media. How far are Protestants too also responsible for this?

Protestantism as a product of spiritual history has indeed lost much of its interest in view of the middling cultural sensitivity of Italian journalism. Protestantism counts today as “extra-historical“: it correspondingly lacks interest and has no headline value. What the large protestant churches in Central and Northern Europe or even in North America do has no “notice appeal“ and the role that protestant churches play today in Africa, Asia or South America is completely ignored. The present slowing down of the “ecumenical way” also seems to be strengthening this idea of the insignificance of Protestantism. Admittedly the Italian Protestants have also been insufficiently persistent in thematizing their presence in society as well as their share in the modernization of the country. Phases of great political, social and cultural enthusiasm alternated with withdrawal into internal concerns. This unsteady back and forth has not made recognition of our churches easier for the public and the media.

What is the role here of the Protestant Church Federation over which you preside?

The Federazione delle chiese evangeliche in Italy (FCEI) has the fundamental task of cultivating the unified witness of the churches in society and so in the media landscape as well. As FCEI we have a claim with the national broadcasting organization to a television programme - „Protestantesimo-RAIDUE“, which is broadcast every second week on Sunday after midnight – and a radio programme - „Culto Radio-RadioUNO“, each Sunday morning at 7.30 a.m. By contrast with the situation I have just sketched, however, we can register good listener and viewer quotas. CultoRadio in particular has over a million listeners each week. A fact which pleases us and encourages us to carry on. But also a fact which confirms our analysis: the marginalization of Protestantism in the media is political. So as FCEI we have concentrated in recent years especially on the parliamentarians who in the end bear responsibility for

political decisions. They will be the measure of the democratic maturity of our country.

What is the significance for the protestant churches in Italy of the largest assembly of European Protestantism which is about to start in Florence?

It is of exceptional significance for us! The General Assembly is of the highest relevance for its public impact and for the encouragement of social awareness.

Massimo Aquilante is a methodist minister and since 2009 President of FCEI. He ministers to the methodist church congregation of Villa San Sebastiano (AQ) and is Director of the Methodist Documentation Centre (Centro de documentazione metodista). He had previously exercised his ministry in Savona, Milan, Terni, Parma-Mezzano and Bologna. From 2002 till 2009 he was President of the Works of the Methodist Churches in Italy (Opera per le chiese metodiste in Italia).Aquilante has gained international ecumenical experience, particularly in the USA. He has also taken part in various ecumenical conferences and missions in Europe and Africa. For three years he was a member of the Commission on Church and Society of the Methodist Conference in Europe. Aquilante, who was born to a minister’s family in 1958 in Genua , is married and has two sons.

Die Kirchen Europas im Aufbruch.

Gedanken zum Forum der Reformbewegungen. Von Jan Gerd Heetderks.

Viele evangelische Kirchen in Europa sind im Aufbruch. Sie beschäftigen sich mit der Frage, was es bedeutet, Kirche mit reformatorischen Wurzeln in dieser Zeit zu sein, und auf welche Weise sie auf die gegenwärtigen Herausforderungen reagieren sollen.

Die Säkularisierung, die Individualisierung und die Anfälligkeit von Institutionen haben deutlich gemacht, dass ‚business as usual‘ in der Kirche keine Zukunft hat.

Darum wird vielerorts – unabhängig voneinander- über die Frage nachgedacht, wie zu reformieren sei.

Bei der Frage nach Reformbewegungen geht es nicht nur um Organisation, nicht nur darum zu beraten, wie wir aus organisationstechnischen Aspekten Kirche verbessern oder reformieren können. Wenn das Reformbestreben nicht getragen wird durch den Wunsch nach spiritueller Erneuerung, nach Erneuerung durch den Geist Gottes, wird es wohl ein sinnloses Unterfangen werden.

Als der Rat der GEKE mich bat, mich für dieses Forum einzusetzen, habe ich spontan ‚Ja‘ gesagt. Warum?

Weil ich herausfinden möchte, ob wir als Kirchen in Europa trotz der unterschiedlichen Kontexte voneinander lernen können, wenn es darum geht, Kirche zu erneuern. Oder sind kulturelle, spirituelle und konfessionelle Unterschiede zwischen den Kirchen so groß, dass

Das Forum ‚Kirchen Europas im Aufbruch‘ will Einblick in die verschiedenen kirchlichen Reformbewegungen in Europa geben und darüber miteinander ins Gespräch kommen. Das Forum will das Denken über kirchliche Erneuerung vertiefen und das Denken über Erneuerung in den verschiedenen Kirchen bereichern. Darum hat

die GEKE im Vorfeld des Forums Kirchen eingeladen, ihre Reformerfahrungen mit allen zu teilen.

heute ein Informationszentrum des städtischen Wohnungs- und Planungsamtes: die Zuiderkerk in Amsterdam.

Berührung nicht zu Bereicherung führen wird? Ich hoffe auf Bereicherung, auch wenn dies in erster Linie durch das Stellen kritischer Fragen erfolgen wird. Und die sind sicherlich zu stellen: Sind Veränderungsprozesse gut theologisch durchdacht? Kann man wirklich Techniken finden, um Kirche zur reformieren? Sind diejenigen, die Veränderungsprozesse imitieren, sich bewusst, dass Kirche im Grunde immer Kirche von unten ist? Sollten Theologinnen nicht viel mehr und öfter lernen von einer Management- oder Organisationstheorie?

Ich glaube, dass die kritischen Fragen der einen Kirchen und die Erfahrungen der anderen Kirchen helfen können, die eigenen Konzepte zu verbessern und inhaltlich zu stärken.

Schön wäre es, wenn wir dann in Florenz auch noch etwas Gemeinsames aufbauen könnten, wenn wir einen Plan machen könnten, wie auch die GEKE eine Rolle spielen kann in der gemeinsamen Aufarbeitung der Erfahrungen. Vielleicht kann das gemeinsame Gedenken der Reformation ein Anstoß zu fragen sein, was Reformation heute heißt und wie wir damit gemeinsam umgehen können.

New Departures for Europe‘s Churches

Thoughts on the Forum for Reform Movements. By Jan Gerd Heetderks.

Many protestant churches in Europe are looking for new ways. They are asking what it means at this time to be a church with Reformation roots and how they should react to the present challenges.

The Forum on “New Departures in Europe‘s Churches” aims to give a view of various church reform movements and bring them into conversation with each other.

It hopes to deepen reflection on church renewal and enrich the thinking on renewal in different churches.

The question of reform movements does not only involve organization. It is not only – and certainly not firstly – a matter of advice on how we can improve or reform the church in technical organizational respects.

If the aim for reform is not driven by the desire for spiritual renewal, for renewal through the Spirit of God, it will probably become a senseless undertaking.

I would like to find out how we as European churches can learn from each other in spite of our differing contexts when it is a matter of renewing the church. Or are cultural, spiritual and confessional differences between the churches so great that contact will not lead to enrichment? I am hoping for enrichment even if that will not come in the first place through posing critical questions. And these certainly have to be asked: Are processes of change well thought through theologically?

Can we really find techniques for reforming the church?

Are those who imitate processes of change aware that the church is always in principle “church from below“?

Should theologians not learn much more and more often from management or organization theory?

I believe that the critical questions of some churches and the experience of others can help us to improve and substantially strengthen our own ideas.

Les Églises d’Europe prêtes à un nouveau départ

Le forum « Les Églises d’Europe sur le départ » veut donner un aperçu des différents mouvements de réforme en Europe et ouvrir le dialogue entre les Églises. Le forum a l’intention d’approfondir et d’enrichir la réflexion sur le renouveau dans les Églises. Pour cette raison, la CEPE a invité des Églises à partager leurs expériences de réformes avec tous.

Lorsqu’il est question de mouvements de réforme, il ne s’agit pas seulement d’organisation. La priorité n’est pas de savoir comment l’Église peut être réformée ou améliorée d’un point de vue technique et organisationnel. Si les efforts de réforme ne sont pas portés par le souhait d’un renouveau spirituel, d’un renouveau par l’Esprit de Dieu, ils n’ont pas de sens.

Je voudrais savoir si nous sommes capables d’apprendre des unes et des autres, lorsqu’il s’agit de réformer l’Église. Les différences culturelles, spirituelles et confessionnelles entre les Églises sont-elles telles que l’échange ne conduirait pas à un enrichissement réciproque ? J’espère que nous nous enrichiront, même si cela passera aussi par des questions critiques. Les questions suivantes doivent être posées : Les processus de réforme sont-ils le fruit d’une réflexion théologique approfondie ? Peut-on vraiment trouver des techniques pour réformer l’Église ? Ceux qui initient des processus de changement, ont-ils conscience qu’Église veut toujours dire Église d’en bas ? Les théologien(ne)s ne devraient-ils pas étudier davantage des théories de management ou d’organisation ?

Florenz, Stadt der Kunst, kultiviert und raffiniert. Ich glaube, dass die überwiegende Mehrheit der Reiseführer auf diese Weise die Stadt beschreiben. Demnach reicht ein schneller Spaziergang von der Brücke Ponte Vecchio zu den Uffizien, dann von der Piazza della Signoria zum Dom. Allerdings möchte ich Ihnen in ein anderes Florenz, in der Tat komplementär zu jenem Bild, vorstellen.

►►Synagoge

Mein Florenz ist die erste Hauptstadt der protestantischen Diaspora in Italien. Von hier aus wurde das protestantische Denken in ganz Italien verbreitet. In der Via die Serragli 49, 200 Meter entfernt vom Convitto della Calza, befindet sich ein prächtiger Palast, im 17. Jahrhundert von der florentinischen Adelsfamilie Del Rosso gebaut. Im Jahr 1861 wurde das Gebäude von der Presbyterian Church of Scotland erworben und der Waldenserkirche geschenkt.

Der Salviati Palast war die Heimat der Theologischen Fakultät, die bis 1922 in Florenz geblieben ist, und bis 1924 auch des evangelischen Verlags Claudiana. Seitdem befindet sich in dem Palast das diakonische Werk der Waldenserkiche.

Mein Florenz ist auch eine der Wiegen des interreligiösen Dialogs.

Bereits im Jahre 1351 hat der Toskaner Giovanni Boccaccio in seinem Decameron die Legende von den drei Ringen erzählt.

Diese Legende wurde von Gotthold Ephraim Lessing in seinem Meisterwerk Nathan der Weise als Metapher der Zusammenarbeit der Religionen genommen. In den Jahren 1951-1965 hat Bürgermeister Giorgio La Pira Florenz in eine der Welthauptstädte des Dialogs zwischen Juden, Christen und Muslimen verwandelt.

►►Piazza Cesare Beccaria

Im Hinblick auf diese dialogische Dimension sollten Sie die Synagoge und das Jüdische Museum in der Via Luigi Carlo Farini 6/4 besuchen. Nur wenige Schritte von der 1874-1881 erbauten Synagoge befindet sich auch die Moschee von Florenz, vor rund zwanzig Jahren eröffnet. In der malerischen Umgebung ist jedoch eine Suche nach Elementen der arabischen Architektur vergeblich.

Noch heute trifft sich die islamische Gemeinde von Florenz in einer ehemaligen Garage. Die Debatte über eine neue Moschee läuft seit etwa vier Jahren, und ich fürchte, dass sie noch länger dauern wird.

Beim Wandern zwischen der Synagoge und der Moschee befinden Sie sich auf der Piazza Cesare Beccaria, einem der wichtigsten Drehkreuze im Stadtverkehr. Ein imposanter Wachturm erinnert daran, dass wir an der Grenze des alten Florenz sind. Wir befinden uns an der Stelle, wo öffentlich die Todesstrafe vollstreckt wurde.

Thema

Ein paar hundert Meter von diesem Turm aus, in der Via Manzoni 21, finden Sie das Gemeindezentrum der Waldenserkirche. Die Kirche ist einen Kilometer vom Gemeindezentrum entfernt und an der Via Pier Antonio Micheli 26 gelegen. Dieses Gebäude, von der anglikanischen Gemeinde im 1905 errichtet, ist seit 1967 die Hauptkirche der Waldensergemeinde zu Florenz.

In dieser Kirche werden zwei Gottesdienste unserer Versammlung stattfinden.

Florence, cité d’art – cultivée et raffinée. Je pense que c’est ainsi que la grande majorité des guides touristiques décrit la ville. Je voudrais vous présenter une autre Florence qui est complémentaire de cette image.

Ma Florence est la première capitale de la diaspora protestante italienne. D’ici la pensée protestante a été répandue dans toute l’Italie. Dans la Via die Serragli, au no. 49, à 200 m du Convitto della Calza, le lieu de notre Assemblée, se trouve un palais magnifique du XVIIe siècle, construit par la famille noble florentine Del Rosso. En 1861, l’immeuble a été acheté par la Presbyterian Church of Scotland et donné à l’Église vaudoise. Le palais Salviati était le lieu de la faculté de théologie qui est restée à Florence jusqu’en 1922 ainsi que de la maison d’édition protestante Claudiana jusqu’en 1924. Depuis le palais abrite les œuvres de la diaconie de l’Église vaudoise qui s’occupent des enfants et des jeunes.

Ma Florence est aussi un des berceaux du dialogue interreligieux. Dès 1351, le Toscane Giovanni Boccaccio a raconté la légende des trois anneaux dans son Decameron. La quête d’éléments architecturaux arabes sera cependant vaine dans l’environnement pittoresque. Aujourd’hui encore la communauté islamique de Florence se réunit dans un ancien garage. Le débat à propos d’une nouvelle mosquée dure depuis quatre ans, et je crains que nous ne soyons pas encore au bout.

En vous promenant entre la synagogue et la mosquée, vous vous trouverez sur la Piazza Cesare Beccaria, un des carrefours les plus importants de la ville. Une tour de garde imposante nous rappelle que nous sommes à la frontière de l’ancienne Florence. Nous nous trouvons à l’endroit où les condamnés à mort ont été exécutés publiquement. A la fin de cette courte promenade à travers ma Florence il y a lieu de mentionner que le grandduché de la Toscane a été le premier pays d’Europe à officiellement abolir la peine de mort en 1786.

A quelques centaines de mètres de cette tour, dans une rue latérale (Via Manzoni 21), vous trouverez le centre paroissial de l’Église vaudoise. L’église est à un kilomètre du centre paroissial dans la Via Pier Antonio Micheli 26. Ce bâtiment, construit en 1905 par la communauté anglicane, est l’église principale de la communauté vaudoise à Florence. Dans cette église auront lieu deux cultes de notre Assemblée.

The Power of Memory to Open the Future Hopes for the Forum “Europe’s churches turn to the future“. By Thorsten Latzel.

A dream, a long journey and many letters: Thus – so Luke tells us – began the story of the churches in Europe (Acts 16,9f.). Paul sees in the night the vision of a man calling him for help – across the frontier to the continent of Europe. And Paul follows the call, unrestingly visiting the centres of the day with his companions and standing in constant exchange with the newly founded congregations.

A dream, a long journey and many letters: The “call for help” sounds more matter-of-fact today, less dramatic, but no less urgent. It can be heard in the modest selfdescriptions of many churches in Europe. Without falling into a lament of universal crisis, the texts drafted for the Forum on “Europe’s churches turn to the future” reflect the tension between institutional loss and efforts for reform, between engagement and exhaustion. It is an ambivalent picture of an institution, rich in tradition, with great times, “long journeys” behind it, which now stands on the threshold of a new millennium – without being very sure what role it will play in it. It is not short of contacts, correspondence and busyness. Instead what it is missing is a dream, an inner assurance, which lets congregations and their members break out on new paths.

I believe that our churches today do not need yet more analyses of problems, reform strategies or missionary ideas. Anyone looking for something of this kind will soon find it. And it is good and necessary that all this is there. But it reflects only the outward side of a development running very deep. Harder is what makes congregations and people inwardly free to deal openly, creatively with their situation. Here lies the real, spiritual challenge of our time. Of course we have powerful theological traditions and wise insights. Yet perhaps we have already heard them too often, perhaps they have died the “death of correctness” so that they can neither really move us nor anyone else. The significant task for the European churches at the beginning of the 21st century is, to put it with some pathos, the rediscovery

of the primal fire, of the spiritual burning in the hearts, of our own calling – in short, of the Gospel.

The date 2017 is bound up for many protestant Christians with remembrance of such an experience. The 95 Theses of Wittenburg symbolize the way in which at a critical time for the church people rediscover the Gospel, open themselves to God afresh, and so experience the power to shape church and world anew. My hope is that the 500th jubilee of the Reformation will contribute to such a spiritual strengthening and assurance of calling.

Secondary to that is where and how people celebrate it. Decisive is the common inward breaking free in our churches. This kind of experience cannot be planned or constructed. As an experience of faith it is ultimately and solely a gift of God. Older protestant theology spoke here of an inner, effective calling (vocatio interna efficax) as the work of the Holy Spirit. But it is the task of the church to recognize sensitively the signs of its own times, to reflect them intensively theologically and to make inviting space for experience in which people can discover the freedom of faith anew for themselves. 2017 offers a great opportunity for the protestant churches in Europe to join in revisiting a remembrance which can open the future like that.

The protestant churches have these tasks not only for themselves but for our whole society. Over-indebtedness, exhaustion, permanent crises dominate discussion in Europe. To speak with Paul: Not only in the creation but in society as well there is a hidden longing “for the revealing of the children of God” (Rom. 8, 19). It is time for us Christians to give bold testimony of our faith, one

My expectation for the forum “Europe’s churches turn to the future” is not that it will solve all these tasks. That would be a hopelessly excessive demand. But it can set a strong signal so that the faithful and their congregations can move towards such a joint path of “remembrance opening the future”. 2017 offers a great opportunity for that.

Von der Kraft zukunftsöffnender Erinnerung

Hoffnungen auf das Forum „Kirchen Europas im Aufbruch“ Ohne in ein allgemeines Krisen-Lamento zu verfallen, spiegeln die zum Forum „Kirchen Europas im Aufbruch“ verfassten Texte die Spannung von institutionellem Verlust und Reformanstrengung, von Engagement und Erschöpfung. Es ist das ambivalente Bild einer traditionsreichen, alten Institution, die große Zeiten, „lange Reisen“, hinter sich hat und am Anfang eines neuen Jahrtausends steht - ohne recht zu wissen, welche Rolle sie darin spielen wird. Es mangelt ihr nicht an Kontakten, Korrespondenz und Geschäftigkeit. Eher fehlt es an einem Traum, einer inneren Gewissheit, die die Gemeinden und Menschen in ihr neu aufbrechen lässt.

Ich glaube, dass unsere Kirchen heute nicht noch weitere Problemanalysen, Reformstrategien oder missionarischen Konzepten brauchen. Wer hier etwas sucht, wird schnell fündig. Und es ist gut und notwendig, dass es dies alles gibt. Es spiegelt aber nur die äußere Seite einer tiefgreifenden Entwicklung. Schwieriger ist, was die Gemeinden und Menschen innerlich frei macht, mit ihrer Situation offen, kreativ umzugehen. Hier liegt die eigentliche, geistliche Herausforderung unserer Zeit. Natürlich gibt es starke theologische Traditionen und kluge Erkenntnisse. Aber vielleicht haben wir sie schon zu oft gehört, vielleicht sind sie den „Tod der Richtigkeit“ gestorben, so dass sie weder uns selbst noch andere wirklich bewegen können. Die wesentliche Aufgabe der europäischen Kirchen am Anfang des 21. Jahrhunderts ist, etwas pathetisch gesprochen, die Wiederentdeckung des Ursprungsfeuers, des geistlichen Brennens der Herzen, der eigenen Berufung - oder kurz: des Evangeliums.

Die Aufgabe der Kirche ist es, die Zeichen der eigenen Zeit sensibel wahrzunehmen, theologisch intensiv zu arbeiten und ansprechende Erfahrungsräume zu schaffen, in denen sich Menschen die Freiheit des Glaubens neu erschließen können. 2017 bietet eine große Chance für die evangelischen Kirchen in Europa, solch eine zukunftsöffnende Erinnerung gemeinsam zu begehen.

Die evangelischen Kirchen haben diese Aufgaben nicht allein für sich, sondern für unsere Gesellschaft insgesamt. Überschuldung, Erschöpfung, Dauerkrisen prägen die Diskussionen in Europa. Es gibt - um mit Paulus zu sprechen - nicht nur in der Schöpfung, sondern auch in der Gesellschaft eine verborgene Sehnsucht danach, „dass die Kinder Gottes offenbar werden“ (Röm 8,19).

Es ist an der Zeit, dass wir als Christen ein mutiges Zeugnis unseres Glaubens geben, das uns hilft, freier, sozialer, gerechter und nachhaltiger miteinander zu leben.

De la force de d’une mémoire qui ouvre l’avenir

Sans tomber dans des lamentations générales sur la crise, les textes écrits pour le forum « Églises d’Europe sur le départ » reflètent la tension entre le déclin institutionnel et les efforts de réformes, la tension entre engagement et épuisement. C’est l’image ambivalente d’une institution ancienne, riche en traditions, qui a derrière elle de grandes époques, de « longs voyages » et qui se trouve au début d’un nouveau millénaire – sans savoir quel sera son rôle. Elle ne manque pas de contacts, de correspondance et d’activités. Elle manque plutôt de rêves, d’une certitude interne qui permet aux paroisses, aux hommes et aux femmes de prendre un nouveau départ.

Je pense que nos Églises n’ont pas besoin de nouvelles analyses des problèmes, de nouvelles stratégies pour les réformes ou de nouveaux concepts missionnaires. Dans ce domaine, les données disponibles sont multiples et c’est très bien comme cela. Mais ces aspects ne sont que la face extérieure d’un nécessaire développement en profondeur. Il est plus difficile d’aborder ce qui libère les paroisses, les hommes et les femmes intérieurement pour qu’ils puissent affronter leur situation avec plus d’ouverture et de créativité. C’est cela le vrai défi spirituel de notre époque. La mission principale des Églises au début du XXIe siècle est – en utilisant une formule un peu pompeuse – de redécouvrir le feu d’origine, le feu spirituel qui brûle à l’intérieur des cœurs, de notre vocation – l’Évangile.

Stewards at the General Assembly – a new generation gets to know the CPCE They greet the delegates when they register, prepare the meeting rooms or help the journalists present to find their bearings. 18 young students of theology from nine countries in Europe will support the General Assembly as stewards. An international ecumenical event on such a large scale as the General Assembly of the CPCE in Florence is not possible without a large number of people who contribute to the success of the meeting. The work of the 18 theological students begins in Florence four days before the opening of the General Assembly. They were selected for the Steward Programme of the CPCE and will support the delegates and the conference office with their services during the General Assembly. But before this they will get to know one another and will be introduced to the work and the current challenges facing the Community of Churches. In this way a new generation receives the chance to gain ecumenical experience within the CPCE and to tie in with a network of protestant connections in Europe. The students will think about the content of the questions raised at the General Assembly and gain insights into the way the CPCE works. But they are equally responsible for ancillary tasks such as the preparation of conference folders or making ready the rooms required for the programme.

The stewards should sense something of the enthusiasm for the protestant model of ecumenism and take this back with them to the churches in their own countries.

They should achieve an awareness of the questions in the minds of protestant Christians who live their faith under other conditions in order to reflect on these questions in their own theological studies. That is why the stewards come from different areas of Europe – from north, south, east and west, from majority and minority churches.

Anyone who has once performed an ancillary service at a large event knows that this will become an unforgettable experience. For some theologians later involved in ecumenical work such service as steward was their first introduction. Everyone will certainly benefit from this programme: those taking part in the General Assembly, those who organize it, the stewards and finally the whole community of churches which will be enriched by these young multipliers.

Stewards bei der Vollversammlung – eine neue Generation lernt die GEKE kennen

Ein internationales ökumenisches Großereignis wie die 7. Vollversammlung der GEKE in Florenz ist nicht möglich ohne eine Vielzahl von Menschen, die zum Gelingen der Veranstaltung beitragen. Schon vier Tage vor Eröffnung der Vollversammlung beginnt in Florenz die Arbeit von 18 Theologiestudierenden. Sie wurden für das Stewardprogramm der GEKE ausgewählt und werden während der Vollversammlung die Delegierten und das Konferenzbüro unterstützen. Doch zuvor werden sie sich untereinander kennen lernen und in die Arbeit und in die gegenwärtigen Herausforderungen der Kirchengemeinschaft eingeführt werden. So erhält eine neue Generation die Möglichkeit, ökumenische Erfahrungen innerhalb der GEKE zu machen und mit am evangelischen Beziehungsnetzwerk in Europa zu knüpfen.

Die Studierenden werden sich mit den inhaltlichen Fragestellungen der Vollversammlung beschäftigen und Einblicke in die Arbeitsweise der GEKE gewinnen. Die Stewards sollen etwas von der Begeisterung für das evangelische Ökumenemodell spüren und mit in ihre Heimatkirchen tragen. Sie sollen einen Blick für die Fragen evangelischer Christen gewinnen, die unter anderen Bedingungen ihren Glauben leben, um deren Fragen in ihrem Theologiestudium mitzubedenken.

Daher kommen die Stewards aus den verschiedenen Regionen Europas, aus dem Norden, Süden, Osten und Westen, aus Mehrheits- und Minderheitskirchen.

Ein solcher Dienst als Steward war für einige Theologinnen und Theologen, die sich später in der Ökumene engagierten, der erste Einstieg. Mit Sicherheit werden alle von diesem Programm profitieren: die Teilnehmenden an der Vollversammlung und die Organisatoren, die Stewards und letztlich die gesamte Kirchengemeinschaft, welche durch junge Multiplikatoren bereichert wird.

Ceux et celles qui ont déjà rendu service lors d’un grand événement savent qu’il s’agit une expérience inoubliable. Une telle expérience de steward a été pour certains théologiens le début d’un engagement œcuménique.

Le programme sera bénéfique pour tous : les participants de l’Assemblée et les organisateurs, les stewards et toute la communion ecclésiale qui s’enrichit de jeunes qui transmettront à leur tour cette expérience.

Un grand événement œcuménique international comme la 7e Assemblée générale de la CEPE à Florence n’est pas réalisable sans de nombreuses personnes contribuant à son succès. Quatre jours avant l’ouverture de l’Assemblée à Florence commence le travail de 18 étudiants en théologie. Ils ont été choisis pour le programme des stewards de la CEPE et rendront service aux délégués et au secrétariat. Ils feront d’abord connaissance les uns avec les autres et seront introduits dans le travail et les défis actuels de la communion d’églises. Ainsi une nouvelle génération aura la possibilité de faire l’expérience de l’œcuménisme au sein de la CEPE. Ils auront un premier contact avec le réseau des relations européennes. Les étudiants seront introduits dans le thème de l’Assemblée et auront un aperçu de la méthode de travail de la CEPE. Mais ils devront également aider à préparer le matériel pour les participants ainsi que les salles. Les stewards seront amenés à ressentir quelque chose de l’enthousiasme pour le modèle œcuménique protestant et de le transmettre dans leurs églises. Ils devront essayer de comprendre les questions de chrétiens protestants qui vivent leur foi dans d’autres situations afin d’en tenir compte lors de leurs études de théologie. C’est pourquoi les stewards viennent de différentes régions d’Europe, du nord, du sud, de l’est et de l’ouest, d’églises majoritaires et d’églises minoritaires.

A Protestant Portal in the Centre of Rome.

10 Years of ecumenical Studies in the Centro Melantone are a reason to give thanks. By Michael Jonas.

Since the Second Vatican Council ecumenical studies in Rome are no longer something out of the ordinary. They are frequently submitted: by specialist groups of the papal colleges, by ecumenically-minded lay circles and particularly by the Papal Council for the Advancement of Christian Unity which, in the few decades since it was formed, has become one of the best-known departments of the Vatican. What is special about the Melanchthon Centre in Rome is not that it offers a platform for ecumenical encounter and academic pursuit but that it is a Protestant establishment. And this is true in two respects: the target-group of the submissions of the Centro Melantone is primarily interested Protestants in Europe who now have a portal in the centre of the global Roman Catholic Church. Second, with the Melanchthon Centre a clearer presence can be seen in the Roman ecumenical and educational scene. Protestant students in Rome are no longer simply free-floating, isolated occurrences but are a permanent phenomenon with a common identity.

In the various colleges in Rome the “Melantonini” have in the meantime achieved a good reputation and are welcome fellow students.

The fact that a Protestant Centre for ecumenical studies could be established is thanks to the co-operation of various Protestant Churches in Europe. The sponsor of the Centre is the Theological Faculty of the Waldensian Church together with the Lutheran Church in Italy.

Financial support came from the beginning from the Protestant Church in Germany and from some of its member churches such as Württemberg and Bavaria.

Consequently the Melanchthon Centre has become a concrete example of the co-operation of various churches of the CPCE. The “Leuenberg”- reality of the Centro Melantone is even clearer when we look at its targetgroup: Among the students who have come to Rome are Swiss Reformed, Hungarian Lutherans and German United, who in their turn encounter here the various Italian Protestant congregations. Along with the study of Catholicism, getting to know Protestant representations other then their own is one of the principal experiences of the period of study in Rome.

What happens in the Centro Melantone? Every year 10 students of theology who are conversant with Italian can participate in an ecumenical study-year in Rome.

They attend lectures in the Waldensian Faculty and selected papal colleges. In addition there is an ambitious complementary programme with language courses, visiting lecturers, excursions and ecumenical meetings.

Anyone who does not want to spend a whole year in Rome can take part in a summer course in September.

These intensive courses lasting about 10-days under changing leadership as a rule have a particular theme and, with a concentrated programme, give an introduction to the Roman Catholic Church. In the past years more than 300 students have taken up the offers of the Melanchthon Centre.

But even someone who is no longer a student in the narrow sense can find educational offers in the Centro Melantone. Further vocational training courses are regularly offered for people in the preaching or teaching occupations. These – like the summer courses – open up the world of Rome. International academic conferences are also part of the Centre’s programme: Roman views of German Protestantism, Catholicism 50 years after the Council and Luther’s stay in Rome have been the topics of conferences which were given much attention. From this year there will appear under the title “Rome and Protestantism” the Melanchthon Centre’s own academic series of books. With its Italian and German editions this will unite European Protestantism in its own way.

Of course periods of study in the city of Rome and ecumenical encounters can take place outside the Melanchthon Centre – and such have always taken place

in the past. But it is gratifying that these are stimulated and promoted by a Protestant institution in Rome and that such a plan can take place before the gates of the Vatican under the sign of a united Protestantism in Europe. And that it has existed for 10 years is also a reason to give thanks.

Der interreligiöse Dialog als Dialogue of Life Beobachtungen einer Reise in den Iran von Thomas Wipf.

Iran – kein alltägliches Reiseziel, auch oder vielleicht schon gar nicht für den Präsidenten der Gemeinschaft Evangelischer Kirchen in Europa. Und doch fand diese Reise statt, als Thomas Wipf als Mitglied einer Delegation der Fellowship of Middle East Evangelical Churches (FMEEC) den Iran besuchte. Sein Bericht - Informationen, aber auch gewonnene Eindrücke - ergänzen auf wertvolle Weise unser Bild von diesem Land.

Manche Fragen seien allerdings unbeantwortet geblieben. „In unserem Meinungsaustausch ging es auch um das Verständnis des interreligiösen Dialogs als eines Dialogue of Life – Wege eines besseren Verständnisses zu finden im täglichen Zusammenleben. Das ist mindestens so wichtig wie der akademisch-theologische Dialog.“

Bereits 1835 wird die Evangelical Church of Iran in der presbyterianischen Tradition gegründet, heute gibt es Gemeinden in Teheran und anderen Städten. Die protestantische Kirche Irans ist klein und die Sorge um die gespannte Situation im Land und in der ganzen Region ist allgegenwärtig. Aber der Iran ist auch altes Kulturland am Kreuzungspunkt griechischer, arabischer und chinesischer Einflüsse und Traditionen. Auch heute befinden sich symbolträchtig die protestantische Kirche, die Synagoge, der Zoroaster-Tempel und die armenisch-orthodoxe Kirche an der gleichen Straße in Teheran. Das Zusammenleben hat Geschichte.

À propos akademisch – in Qom, dem Zentrum des akademischen Lebens und ebenfalls von der Delegation besucht, lehren christliche und jüdische Lehrer an der University for Religions and Denominations. Im Gespräch mit den jungen islamischen Theologinnen und Theologen stießen die Mitglieder der Delegation auf großes Interesse am Kontakt mit den Christen.

Allerdings kann das Interesse an der anderen Religionsgemeinschaft nicht öffentlich gezeigt werden.

Das gilt auch für die iranischen Protestanten, die im Berufsleben als verlässlich geschätzt werden. Trotzdem führt die Angst vor einer Eskalation der politischen Lage, nicht zuletzt aufgrund der aktuellen Entwicklungen in Syrien, dazu, dass viele, auch protestantische, Christen das Land verlassen – ein Verlust für das Land, das ausgebildete Kräfte verliert, aber natürlich auch für die protestantische Kirche.

Welches Ziel verfolgt der Besuch einer hochrangigen protestantischen Delegation im Iran? „Es ging zuallererst darum, unseren Brüdern und Schwestern im Iran gegenüber der Regierung Öffentlichkeit und Aufmerksamkeit zu geben“, sagt Thomas Wipf.

Einladende Organisation war nicht etwa die protestantische Kirche des Iran, sondern das Center for Interreligious Dialogue der ICRO (Islamic Cultural and Religious Organisation), eine Institution der iranischen Regierung. Gespräche über Bedingungen des interreligiösen Dialogs standen daher im Mittelpunkt. „Jederzeit war es den Mitgliedern der Delegation möglich, Fragen nach Themen der Religionsgemeinschaften zu stellen

Trotz der Bemühungen um Dialog könne nicht übersehen werden, dass die Palästinenserfrage und die Diskussion um den Status von Jerusalem alle anderen Themen überlagerten, so die Einschätzung von Präsident Wipf.

Als problematisch empfanden es die Mitglieder der Delegation, dass aufgrund der Medienberichterstattung über den Iran eine verzerrte Sicht über die Lage der Muslime in Europa herrscht, festgemacht etwa am Minarettverbot in der Schweiz. Vor diesem Hintergrund glaubwürdig von einer Gleichberechtigung der Religionen zu sprechen, sei schwierig, sagt Thomas Wipf, und fügt aus seiner langjährigen internationalen Erfahrung hinzu: „Vor 20 Jahren war der interreligiöse Dialog schon weiter.“ Wie kann also ein Fazit dieses denkwürdigen Besuchs im Iran aussehen? „Es ist gelungen, der Evangelical Church of Iran Sichtbarkeit zu geben und ihren Mitgliedern zu vermitteln, dass sie eingebettet sind in die internationale protestantische Gemeinschaft.

Gegenüber der iranischen Regierung war es wichtig zu zeigen, dass der Protestantismus international vernetzt ist, u.a. über Organisationen wie die FMEEC, die GEKE, die Weltgemeinschaft Reformierter Kirchen und den Lutherischen Weltbund. Vor diesem Hintergrund

Interreligious Dialogue as a Dialogue of Life

Observations on a journey to Iran by Thomas Wipf.

Iran – not an everyday travel destination, even or perhaps in particular for the President of the Community of Protestant Churches in Europe. Yet this journey took place when Thomas Wipf visited Iran as a member of a delegation from the Fellowship of Middle East Evangelical Churches (FMEEC). His report – information details, but also impressions won – usefully complements our picture of this country.

The Protestant Church of Iran was founded in the Presbyterian tradition as early as 1835; there are congregations today in Teheran and other cities. The Protestant Church in Iran is small and concern about the tense situation in the land and the whole region is omnipresent. But Iran is also a land of ancient culture at the crossroads between Greek, Arab, Chinese influences and traditions. Even today the Protestant Church, the Synagogue, the Zoroastrian Temple and the Armenian Orthodox Church stand highly symbolically on the same street in Teheran. This life as neighbours has a history.

That is also true for Iran‘s Protestants, who are valued as reliable in business life. Yet fear of an escalation in the political situation, not least because of current developments in Syria, is leading many protestant Christians to leave the country – a loss for the land, which is losing qualified workers, but naturally for the Protestant Church as well.

What goal is followed by a high grade protestant delegation in Iran? “It was first of all about gaining publicity and attention from the government for our brothers and sisters in Iran”, said Thomas Wipf. The host organisation was not the Protestant Church in Iran but the Centre for Interreligious Dialogue of the ICRO (Islamic Cultural and Religious Organization), an institution of the Iranian government. “At all times it was possible for delegation members to ask questions about themes of the religious communities or the standpoint of the government of the Islamic Republic of Iran regarding other religious communities”, Thomas Wipf reported.

Some questions admittedly remained unanswered. “Our exchange of views was also about the understanding of interreligious dialogue as a dialogue of life – ways of finding a better understanding in daily life together.

That is at least as important as the academic theological dialogue.”

On “academic” - in Qom, the centre of academic life which was also visited by the delegation, Christian and Jewish teachers teach at the University for Religions and Denominations. In conversation with the young Islamic theologians the members of the delegation met great interest in contact with Christians. Admittedly, such interest in other religious communities may not be shown openly.

Le dialogue interreligieux comme « Dialogue of Life »

Observations lors d’un voyage en Iran. De Thomas Wipf.

Quel est le but de la visite d’une délégation protestante en Iran ? « Il s’agissait tout d’abord d’attirer l’attention du gouvernement sur nos frères et sœurs en Iran », a dit Thomas Wipf. L’invitation ne provenait pas de l’Église protestante d’Iran mais du Centre pour le Dialogue interreligieux (Center for Interreligious Dialogue) du ICRO (Islamic Cultural and Religious Organisation Organisation culturelle et religieuse islamique), une institution du gouvernement iranien. Les conditions du dialogue interreligieux ont été au centre des conversations. « A tout moment il a été possible aux membres de la délégation de poser des questions concernant les communautés religieuses ou le point de vue du gouvernement de la République islamique », a ajouté Thomas Wipf. Certaines questions n’ont cependant pas trouvé de réponses. « Il s’agissait dans notre échange de comprendre le dialogue interreligieux comme un Dialogue of Life – de trouver des chemins pour une meilleure compréhension dans la vie de tous les jours. Ceci est au moins aussi important que le dialogue théologique universitaire. »

In spite of the efforts for dialogue it could not fail to be seen that the Palestinian question and the debate about the status of Jerusalem overlay all other themes, so the estimate of President Wipf. The members of the delegation found it problematic that because of the media‘s reporting on Iran a distorted view of the situation of Muslims in Europe prevails, typified for instance by the banning of minarets in Switzerland. Against this background it is hard to speak credibly of equal rights for religions, said Wipf, adding from his long years of international experience, “20 years ago interreligious dialogue was already further on.”

Selon le Président Wipf, malgré les efforts pour un dialogue il ne peut échapper à personne que la question des palestiniens et la discussion à propos du statut de Jérusalem dépassent tous les autres thèmes. Les membres de la délégation ont regretté qu’en raison de reportages dans les médias à propos de l’Iran, une vision déformée de la situation des musulmans a cours en Europe. Elle se manifeste par exemple dans l’interdiction du minaret en Suisse. Dans ce contexte il est difficile d’être crédible lorsque l’on parle d’égalité des religions, a dit Thomas Wipf qui a une grande expérience internationale. Il a ajouté : « Il y a 20 ans, le dialogue interreligieux était plus avancé. »

What sort of balance can be drawn from this memorable visit to Iran? “We succeeded in giving the Evangelical Church of Iran visibility and in conveying to its members that they are embedded in the international protestant fellowship. Vis-à-vis the Iranian government it was important to show that Protestantism is internationally networked, inter alia through organizations such as FMEEC, CPCE, the World Communion of Reformed Churches or the Lutheran World Alliance. Against this background we are grateful and glad to have had the chance to make this visit to Iran.”

Quel bilan tirer de cette visite en Iran ? « Nous avons réussi à donner une visibilité à l’Evangelical Church of Iran et à assurer à ses membres qu’ils font partie d’une communion protestante internationale. Face au gouvernement iranien il a été important de montrer que le protestantisme dispose d’un réseau international via des organisations comme la FMEEC, la CEPE, l’Alliance des Églises Réformées et la Fédération luthérienne mondiale. Dans cette perspective nous sommes heureux et reconnaissants d’avoir eu la possibilité de cette visite en Iran. »

Dialogue

The Fellowship of Middle East Evangelical Churches FMEEC An overview by General Secretary Rosangela Jarjour.

FMEEC History The search for unity has always been a main objective of the mainline Evangelical churches worldwide. Since Edinburgh 1910, the Protestant missionary movement has pursued the aim of uniting the divided church of Christ “so that the world may believe.” Thus it was that the various missionary movements operating in the ME held several meetings culminating in the formation of the “Near East Christian Council” in 1924.

Forty years later, in 1964, an important development took place whereby the local churches, rather than the mission agencies, became the founding members of the “Near East Council of Churches” (NECC). In this new Council the mission agencies obtained an advisory status. That same year, in Egypt, the first Assembly of NECC welcomed the Syrian Orthodox Church as a member, thus launching the ecumenical movement in the ME. Negotiations were soon begun that aimed at inviting the other Orthodox Churches, namely the Greeks, the Copts and the Armenians to join NECC. Ten years later, at the Assembly of NECC held in Lebanon in 1974, all the Orthodox churches officially joined, and the Council took the new name of “Middle East Council of Churches” (MECC).

At this historical juncture, the Evangelical members of MECC, namely the Reformed, Lutheran and Anglican, decided that they needed to preserve a forum wherein they can, as one family of churches, continue to experience inter-evangelical fellowship and pursue their intra-evangelical search for unity. Thus it was that in that same year, 1974, the first General Assembly of the Fellowship of Middle East Evangelical Churches (FMEEC) was held. The churches represented in FMEEC came from Egypt, Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Jordan, Iran, Kuwait, Sudan, Algeria and Tunisia, and more recently, from Iraq.

As can be seen, the Reformation traditions represented are Reformed (Congregationalist and Presbyterian), Episcopal, Lutheran and Methodist.

The Fellowship defined itself as “an association of the evangelical churches of the Middle East that believe in one God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, and in Jesus Christ as Lord, Saviour and the One Head of the Church.

They believe that the Holy Bible is the sole foundation for Christian doctrine. They confess that justification is by the grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ alone, and that good works are the fruit of faith.”

Current Achievements One of FMEEC’s most important achievements is the “Amman Declaration” of 2006. This document represents a historic statement of union and inter-communion between the Reformed and Lutheran member churches of the Fellowship. The efforts at reaching a more comprehensive union with the Anglican Churches has been in process for many years, in spite of the many obstacles that face it, both locally and globally. The search for unity cannot, and must not, stop.

Another recent achievement was the unanimous historic vote during the last General Assembly in January 2010 in support the “ordination of women”. The proposal was drafted on the spot in response to a report by the FMEEC‘s theology committee, which found no biblical or theological reasons to oppose female ordination.

Special Areas of Ministry FMEEC is blessed by being able to carry on special ministries serving the Iranian and the Iraqi churches, specially designed to suit the needs of the churches, FMEEC carried out continuous capacity building programs for Iranian churches since 1992 and for the Iraqi churches which came in full force in 2009. Needless to say that these programs are of high quality and based to serve the needs of the member churches as they continue to face difficulties of all sorts. The least that can be said is that these programs, besides empowering church women and men to serve the churches better, they are seen as a sign of hope, encouragement and solidarity as well.
