O Clap Your Hands Treble Solo or Soli, Three-part Treble Chorus and Piano Commissioned by Mississauga (Ontario) Children’s Choir, O Clap Your Hands is a setting of words from Psalm 47 as translated and adapted by the composer. Influenced by jazz and gospel music, this fast, energetic work surges forward with constant syncopation, rich pan-diatonic and chromatic harmony, and repeated melodic lines and text.

The bright and challenging piano part, with its added-tone arpeggios and extended registers, highlights and punctuates the vocal lines. Through alternating keys, various homophonic and contrapuntal episodes, and the addition of tutti clapping, the work reaches a climactic, resounding ending.

Winter’s Lullaby SSA Chorus, Flute, Piano Winter’s Lullaby evokes the tranquil beauty of a snow scene in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Clear treble voices, solo flute, and piano add simple melodies to a text which sings a lullaby to winter. Snow melts, ice cracks, and birds fill the clear winter sky with song. Unison choral singing alternates with part-singing, nuanced further by contrasts in legato and non-legato lines. Dedicated to Susan Johnson, who taught music and directed choirs in Bucks County for thirty-two years. Flute part included.

The Clock (Zegar) Two-part Treble Chorus and Piano Beginning with quotations from Big Ben’s chimes and a traditional melody from the Jewish High Holidays, this piece is scored for two part treble voices, piano, and an optional mechanical clock sound. The text describes the workings of a clock in whimsical ways (tireless little gears and springs), and the vocal lines are lyrical and easy to learn.

The piano part completes the effect, sometimes measured and steady, sometimes whirring fantastically. The result is a charming piece for children’s voices.

The Journey of Hope SSA(B) Chorus, Djembe, Shaker, Bass Guitar, and Piano The Journey of Hope was written as a commission for the Jacksonville Children’s Chorus, Darren Dailey, director. It is scored for SSAB voices, with the baritone part written so that it is appropriate for changing male voices. Accompanimental parts are provided for piano, djembe, cabasa, and bass guitar. The title gives a clue to the focus of the text: a forward-looking view of what we can accomplish together through hope and unity.

A Trip to the Zoo Treble Chorus and Piano Composed for Daniel Wallenberg and the Rogers Park and Humboldt Park neighborhood choirs of the Chicago Children’s Choir, the four pieces in the set (Wordy Birdies, The Elephant, Snake Eyes, and Monkey Business) are keyboard-accompanied rounds (3- and 4-part) with original lyrics. Intended for children’s ensembles, some performances have been enhanced by the addition of simple “choreography” developed by the director along with the participating children.

Winter Snow Two-part Treble Chorus and Piano “In December, 2014, my nine-year-old granddaughter, Charlotte, showed me ‘Winter Snow,’ a poem that she had written as a school assignment. I was taken by the text: by its imagery, rhythm, and assonance. Charlotte gave me permission to set her words to music. I hope this piece does justice to her beautiful poem.”

Train from Due West SSAA Chorus unaccompanied Stephen Chatman’s Train for SSAA chorus is an arrangement from his original set, Due West for SATB chorus, commissioned by the Vancouver Chamber Choir in 1997. The simple, charming text by Tara Wohlberg rings specifically to a western theme. Using onomatopoeia, ostinati, and a standard harmonic progression, Chatman applies a humorous touch.

Spend All You Have On Loveliness SSAA Chorus, Piano, and opt. Oboe American poet Sara Teasdale won the Pulitzer Prize for her 1917 collection of poems titled Love Songs. The text for this song is taken from “Barter,” the first in this set of poems.

Despite the poet’s history of poor emotional and physical health, the text captures a hopeful attitude that foreshadows the spirit of optimism that was the precursor to the Roaring Twenties.
