We Pray to Be at Peace from “Missa Gaia” SSAA Chorus and Piano, or opt. Oboe, String Quartet, and Suspended Cymbal Missa Gaia: Mass for the Earth is a creed for our times. The form and spirit of the traditional Mass combines with words that speak of human beings’ relationship to the Earth. “We Pray to Be at Peace” is movement II of the Mass (titled “II. Kyrie: Mother, Sister, Blessed, Honored”). Gentle and lyrical, this is a prayer for humility and awareness.

The music reflects the spirit of the text: celebratory and yet wistful. It begins in unison but quickly moves to four- to six-part writing, with the basses and second tenors dividing in places.

This setting of the Mother Goose nursery rhyme is funky and fun!

The scoring is for mixed chorus and jazz trio, but it certainly could be performed with just a piano (probably best with three hands). The choral parts are very accessible, and there is enough repetition to make for easy rehearsal planning.

My Song in the Night SATB, Cello, and Piano This text from an old Southern folk hymn is given new original music in this anthem setting. The piano part can easily be adapted to organ. A contemplative tapestry in which the voices and cello move in and out of the foreground. There is a middle section where the chorus sings wordlessly against the cello line. Despite the despair in the text, there is also comfort and reassurance here.

SATB Chorus unaccompanied Written for school children in Peki, Ghana at the request of a teacher for the celebration of Empire Day, hence the “strongly patriotic flavor of the text” as stated by the composer.

Dr. Amu chose the text carefully to inspire the children to become good citizens in the future. Written in a mostly homophonic style, the catchy rhythm was intended to arouse the interest of children, but your singers and audiences will be delighted as well!

SATB Chorus unaccompanied In 1969, the University of Ghana Men’s Chorus premiered the TTBB version of Adawura b me (I Am the Bell) as part of their program at the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts in New York. The ensemble was participating in the Second International University Choral Festival.

The piece is playful and rhythmic, with cross rhythms of twoagainst-three throughout. Most of the words are examples of onomatopoeia: text representing the sounds of the bell and various drums in an ensemble.

This Talk Has Got to Be Spoken (Asεm yi di ka) SATB Chorus unaccompanied Asεm yi di ka was composed in 1944, as an answer to the anxiety felt by the composer about the prevailing conditions of the time.“ This talk has got to be spoken. Who will speak it? I, myself.” The declamation of the text is largely homophonic, the rhythm features the two-against-three style found so often in African repertoires.

The latter is charming (and was the composer’s original intent), but the former adds some flexibility and usefulness. Accessible for a SATB choir of any size and ability.

SATB Chorus and Chamber Orchestra or Piano The text for this work was written by Abraham Koplowicz, who wrote this poem while his family was trapped in the Lodz ghetto, before being killed in Auschwitz-Birkenau as a young teenager. The poem was found in 1983 by his half-brother. Choruses who sing this work will be transported on a magical flight around the world through time and space along with their audiences. Contents: 1. Set Me as a Seal Alto or Bass Solo, SATB Chorus, and Piano A setting of Song of Songs, Set Me as a Seal was composed as a vehicle for the prominent cantor Ira Bigeleisen and his particularly rich basso voice. However, the solo can also be sung effectively by an alto. Structurally, it is a simple AABA’ form, and presents no unusual vocal demands on the chorus. Cascading vocal entries on the text “Many waters cannot quench love, neither can the floods drown it” provide text painting and contrast to music that is otherwise gently lyrical and songlike. A Prayer of Compassion SATB Chorus (divisi) unaccompanied This is a prayerful, homophonic setting of texts from three sources: Psalms 4:8, Psalms 5:8, and John Greenleaf Whittier’s “Divine Compassion.” The music is approachable and sensitive. Moments of reflection give way to moments of grandness, and finally the piece ends quietly. In today’s world, a prayer for us to remain sensitive to suffering is never out of place.

Love Arrives SSA Chorus and Piano This setting of Maya Angelou’s poem Touched by an Angel is a reminder that love is not a mere timid, fleeting feeling, but a courageous struggle which heightens our experience of both joy and pain. Love leads us from self-awareness to wholeness; love requires our complete sacrifice even as it offers us the ultimate gift in return.

The vocal writing successfully tracks the varied emotions, now rhythmic, now gentle, and well supported by a well-crafted piano accompaniment. There are frequent excursions into three-part writing.

TTBB Chorus and Piano or Chamber Orchestra Crossing the Bar creates images of the sea, with the “final voyage” leading us out across the water, to see our Pilot face to face. The musical setting endeavors to express the growth from peaceful to ecstatic moods, the tolling of the bell, the meeting of the Pilot. The poetry of Alfred Lord Tennyson is characterized by dark, yet transcendent imagery—the depths of the ocean, the dark of the night, the tumult of passion, the acceptance of death. Throughout the varied imagery there speaks one central message: “Love was my lord and king.”

Life Has Loveliness SATB Chorus and Piano “Life has loveliness to sell” is the opening line of Sara Teasdale’s poem, “Barter,” from her collection titled Love Songs (1917). Chatman’s setting reflects the poem’s optimistic spirit and the beauty or loveliness of life through lines pertaining not only to life’s “value” but also exemplifying nature, music, children, love, and peace. Alternating homophonic and contrapuntal sections modulate and evolve, rising to a climactic ending.

Missa Brevis SATB Chorus unaccompanied Missa Brevis began in 1980 as a wedding gift for friends of the composer. The entire work was completed over the course of the next three years. Kyrie, Credo, and Agnus Dei borrow directly from liturgical chant, or are otherwise inspired by the spirit of that repertoire.

Missa Brevis is intended both for liturgical and concert use, and may be performed by a quartet or chamber choir.

Lux in tenebris SATB Chorus (divisi) unaccompanied A single verse from the prologue to the gospel of John, this piece elaborates on the text’s juxtaposition between the darkness of despair and the light of hope. Dissonant, layered ostinati built on fragments of the text illustrate the omnipresent darkness. The second half of the piece changes key and meter, employing the entire text to emphasize the persistent shining and eternal triumph of the light.

The soloist for this piece sings the English text and should have a light and lilting vocal quality, and the style of violin playing should have the feel of traditional Irish or Scottish music.

Oh, Freedom SATB Chorus (divisi) unaccompanied An interesting spiritual in that it was written after the Civil War and therefore after the slaves had been freed. However, as the struggles of African Americans continued, it has become a prominent song in the march for equality, even into the 21st century. A relaxed, dignified setting with expressive phrases and some chromaticism which adds to its emotive quality.

Maya’s Prayer for Peace SATB and Piano This original setting of Maya Angelou’s poem, “Prayer” is in a soulful 6/8. Beginning with a series of thanks, the piece has a slower middle section with a series of petitions, beginning, “For those who have no voice, we ask you to speak.” The music of the first section reappears and closes with a prayer for peace. An unusual and powerful musical offering for any occasion focusing on justice and social concerns.

Peace Flows into Me from For a Breath of Ecstasy SATB Chorus, Oboe, and String Quartet or Piano This second movement from For a Breath of Ecstasy, is a cappella except for a short introduction and coda. The first and last sections have an SATB with a soprano descant. The middle section is underlayed with a rhythmic motive in the men’s parts, which pulses below the flowing women’s parts. It builds to an emotional declamation (“they are all fulfilled in you,”), and the beginning material returns.

The rich harmony of this arrangement makes it perfect for contests and festivals, as well as a great addition to your TTBB library.

Who Gave My Soul to Me from For a Breath of Ecstasy TTBB Chorus, Oboe, and String Quartet or Piano The fourth movement from For a Breath of Ectasy is set for TTBB Chorus, oboe, and string quartet or piano. After a calm start, a rhythmic motive begins in the bass clef of the accompaniment during the introduction and intensifies as the singers enter with the first statement of the text. There is an instrumental interlude, a recap of the entire text, and a coda. The choral writing is approachable, often beginning in unison, moving to two part and then to four parts for the last phrase and cadence. Oboe part included.

A Prep-School Boy SATB Chorus (divisi) unaccompanied This composition shares similarities with music one might hear performed by a cappella groups on college campuses, such as humming and singing on neutral vowels, and numerous examples of word painting. Elements of this piece resemble 20th-century English choral music by William Walton and Ralph Vaughan Williams, in addition to Britten himself. Examples include abruptly distant harmonic changes, shocking cross-relations, and slow triplets that match the rhythm of the English language. Overall, A Prep-School Boy is very much in the spirit of the composer that it honors.

This three-stanza text centers on a person reflecting on a lost love from late in life, and is set to three textures: a soft chant, a gentle melody, and rich, sustained chords. In the final verse, all of voices come together to bring an extra degree of tenderness to the intimate text.

Last Lullaby Soprano Solo, SATB or TTBB Chorus (divisi) unaccompanied The composer set this text to memorialize the 20 children who were murdered on December 14, 2012, in Newtown, Connecticut, at Sandy Hook Elementary School. A skillful marriage of music with word captures a sense of hope for a “new day.” The soprano solo acts as the mother singing a lullaby to her child. The final phrase of the poem is a Latin prayer that provides a reflective moment: “May they rest eternally. Grant them rest in the eternal Light, the perpetual Light. Amen.”

My Boy Jack SATB Soli, SATB Chorus unaccompanied Rudyard Kipling wrote this poem during World War I, perhaps a lament over the death of his own son, or as a tribute to all who were lost during The Great War. The harmonic language in the poem’s first three stanzas is intended to portray the sorrow and angst that Kipling’s words so effectively convey. In the last stanza, however, the tone of the poem suddenly changes, becoming more positive and resolute: “Then hold your head up all the more, this tide, and every tide…” To reflect this shift, the setting uses a quasi-English folksong style, one that is more lyrical and direct.
