It is considered one of the greatest works of American literature and is often cited as a quintessential representation of the Jazz Age, a term Fitzgerald coined to describe the Roaring Twenties. F. The novel is set in the summer of 1922 and takes place in the fictional towns of West Egg and East Egg on Long Island, as well as in New York City. The story is narrated by Nick Carraway, a young man who moves to Long Island and becomes involved in the lives of his wealthy and enigmatic neighbor, Jay Gatsby. The novel explores themes of wealth, love, decadence, and the American Dream. It tells the story of Jay Gatsby, a mysterious millionaire known for his extravagant parties, and his unrequited love for Daisy Buchanan, a married woman. The narrative delves into the complexities of the characters' relationships and the disillusionment of the American Dream. While "The Great Gatsby" is now considered a classic, it received mixed reviews upon its initial publication. It was only in the decades following Fitzgerald's death that the novel gained widespread acclaim and recognition. The novel has been adapted into several films, with the most famous being the 1974 version starring Robert Redford as Gatsby and Mia Farrow as Daisy. More recently, in 2013, another film adaptation directed by Baz Luhrmann was released, starring Leonardo DiCaprio as Gatsby and Carey Mulligan as Daisy. F. Scott Fitzgerald's "The Great Gatsby" remains a staple in American literature and is studied in schools and universities for its exploration of societal themes and its unique narrative style. "A Yankee in Canada, With Anti-Slavery and Reform Papers" is a collection of essays and writings by the American transcendentalist author Henry David Thoreau. It was published posthumously in 1866 by Ticknor and Fields, a Boston-based publishing firm.

The title essay, "A Yankee in Canada," documents Thoreau's journey to Canada in the 1850s. Thoreau was known for his love of nature and his philosophical reflections, and this work combines his observations of the Canadian landscape with his thoughts on the cultural and political differences between the United States and Canada. The collection also includes essays related to Thoreau's activism, particularly his antislavery stance. Thoreau was a strong advocate for civil disobedience and resistance to unjust laws, as famously expressed in his essay "Civil Disobedience." This collection likely includes some of his writings on these themes.

Thoreau's works are often associated with transcendentalism, a philosophical and literary movement that emerged in the 19th century in the United States. Transcendentalists emphasized the inherent goodness of people and nature, as well as the importance of self-reliance and individual intuition. "A Yankee in Canada, With Anti-Slavery and Reform Papers" provides readers with insights into Thoreau's views on various social and political issues of his time, making it a valuable addition to his body of work. Thoreau's writings continue to be studied and appreciated for their intellectual depth, poetic prose, and exploration of themes that remain relevant today. ID#0578 Price (USD) $2,650.00

The collection includes a travel narrative, "A Yankee in Canada," as well as various essays on topics such as anti-slavery and social reform.

Upon publication, Ms. Mitchell was inundated with books, waiting to be signed. Despite her efforts, she was unable to keep up with the demand for her autograph. Instead, in keeping with her sense of humor, the author included a personalized letter, typed and signed. The letter is addressed to “My Dear Mrs. Watson” and goes on to describe how time-consuming book signing really is. This letter provides its readers with a quick glimpse into the mind of a best-selling author and a remarkable woman. Gone with the Wind won Margaret Mitchell both the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Award.

century Southern writers, Mitchell portrays an idyllic image of the antebellum South.

While it can be legitimately criticized for its insensitivity to the treatment of African Americans who were enslaved, Mitchell's novel demonstrates how the South was decimated by the Civil War and continued to suffer under the Northern-sanctioned Restoration. It is also the basis of the 1939 Academy Award-winning movie, the conflicted love story of rebellious Scarlett and Rhett Butler remains an American classic. Very Good / No DJ. The 20-novel series, the first of which is Master and Commander, is known for its well-researched and highly detailed portrayal of early 19thcentury life, as well as its authentic and evocative language. A partially finished twenty-first novel in the series was published posthumously containing facing pages of handwriting and typescript. He wrote a number of other novels and short stories which were mostly published before he achieved success with the Aubrey Maturin series. He also translated works from French to English, and wrote two biographies. His major success as a writer came late in life, when the Aubrey-Maturin series caught the eye of an American publisher, drawing more readers and favourable reviews when the author was in his seventies. Near the end of his life, and in the same year he lost his beloved wife, British media revealed details of his early life, first marriage and post-war change of name, causing distress to the very private author and to many of his readers at that time. Adelaide Frick was the wife of Henry Frick and mother of Helen Clay Frick. Also a loosely inserted hand-written note with the title & a very brief description of the binding - most likely in the hand of an employee of Sotheran's of Sackville Street, London. "Miss C.B. Currie" (December 12, 1849 - April 2, 1940) was the miniaturist artist of all the genuine Cosway bindings. Born in Cornwall, England, Caroline Billin Curry was also one of the most prominent fore-edge artists in the twentiethcentury. A master of the art of miniature painting, she excelled as a copyist working for Henry Sotheran Booksellers, London. She became famous for her miniature paintings applied to two art forms. First, mounted on Rivière bindings and named by her employer as "Cosway" bindings. Later she expanded her work into the art of painting on the fanned edge of a book - called a fore-edge painting. She would often take the idea for a painting from an illustration in the nook - in this case she has taken the idea from a woodacut illustration of Queen Elizabeth I (see page 101).

Minor rubbing to spine, joints at head of binding. Occasional spotting. The letter is dated Friday on Tennial personal letterhead. The letter reads "Haste!!!. / My Dear Will. Sir John Tenniel was an English illustrator best known for his work on Lewis Carroll's "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and "Through the Looking-Glass." Born in 1820 in London, Tenniel showed early artistic talent and began studying at the Royal Academy schools at the age of 17.

Tenniel's career as a renowned illustrator began when he joined the staff of the satirical magazine Punch in 1850. His intricate and detailed style became synonymous with the publication, and Tenniel's political cartoons, caricatures, and illustrations helped shape the visual language of the Victorian era. In 1864, Tenniel was approached by Lewis Carroll to illustrate "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland." Tenniel's illustrations brought the whimsical and surreal world of Wonderland to life, capturing the imagination of readers and ensuring the success of the book. His iconic portrayals of Alice, the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter, and other characters have become inseparable from the story itself. Tenniel's collaboration with Carroll continued with "Through the Looking-Glass," published in 1871. Once again, Tenniel's illustrations added depth and charm to Carroll's narrative, contributing significantly to the enduring popularity of the sequel. Tenniel's contribution to children's literature and the broader world of illustration is immeasurable. George Cruikshank was born in London. His father, Edinburgh-born Isaac Cruikshank, was one of the leading caricaturists of the late 1790s and Cruikshank started his career as his father's apprentice and assistant. His older brother, Isaac Robert, also followed in the family business as a caricaturist and illustrator. Cruikshank's early work was caricature; but in 1823, at the age of 31, he started to focus on book illustration. He illustrated the first, 1823 English translation (by Edgar Taylor and David Jardine) of Grimms' Fairy Tales, published in two volumes as German Popular Stories.

A very good, complete set of Greenaway works which embody the spirit of illustration for children. The Almanacks appeal also lay in each new year's choice of decorations for the seasons. Although the Almanacks popularity was a bit more erratic than her major works, in America they had sales of almost twice the British market; the 1883 was the best-selling year, with more than 90,000 sold. The Greenaway craze inspired imitations and spin offs and even a line of clothing based on the clothing shown in her illustrations. Ultimately, Greenaway's works constitute one of the primary influences on children's illustration and children's publishing.

Arthur Rackham. Rackham's hauntingly dark illustrations, are perfectly suited to the drama - an epic story that charts the struggles of gods, heroes and mythical creatures loosely based on characters from the Norse sagas. Many of the earliest children's books, particularly those dating back to the 1850s and before, are now extremely scarce and increasingly expensive. Pook Press are working to republish these classic works in affordable, high quality, colour editions, using the original text and artwork so these works can delight another generation of children. About the Illustrator: Arthur Rackham (1867-1939) was one of the premier illustrators of the early 20th Century. He illustrated many books, the first of which was published in 1893. His humour, romance and soul made him the leading illustrator of the early twentieth century and his work is to be found in versions of almost every classic from Hansel and Gretel to The Tempest, from The Pied Piper to Peer Gynt. Characteristic of his work are gloomy forests of sinuous trees, nubile fairy maidens, and unsightly ogres and trolls. Throughout his career he developed a very individual style that was to influence a whole generation of children, artists and other illustrators. His haunting humour and dreamlike romance ads to the enchantment and fantasy of children's literature. Item ID#0557 Price (USD) $1,200.00

“Shelley’s use of the classical pastoral elegy form was natural enough. He had studied and translated many classical elegies himself; he had also read and admired Milton’s 17th century interpretation of the form in Lycidas. Most critics believe Shelley modeled Adonais upon Virgil’s tenth Eclogue, Bion’s elegy on the classical hero Adonis, and the anonymous elegy on Bion himself. It is a beautiful work and one of which Shelley was justly proud” (Mary Wollstonecraft Shelley). Adonais was printed by the Chiswick Press for the Reed Pale Press, which was founded by Edmund D. Brooks and his son Edmund Brooks of Minneapolis.

THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS; A NARRATIVE OF 1757 Cooper, James Fenimore. At the time of Cooper's writing, many U.S. settlers believed and perpetuated the myth that Native Americans were disappearing, believing they would ultimately be assimilated or killed off entirely due to the genocidal structure of settler colonialism. Especially in the East, as Native Peoples' land was stolen and settled on in the name of U.S. expansion and Jeffersonian agrarianism, the narrative that many Native Peoples were "vanishing" was prevalent in both novels like Cooper's and local newspapers. allowed settlers to view themselves as the original people of the land and reinforced their belief in European ethnic and racial superiority through, among other rationalizations, the tenets of scientific racism. In this way, Cooper was interested in the American progress narrative when more colonists were increasing pressure on Native Americans, which they, and Cooper, would then view as "natural".

James Fenimore Cooper: Early Life: James Fenimore Cooper was born on September 15, 1789, in Burlington, New Jersey, USA. He came from a well-established family in the newly formed United States. Cooper is best known for his historical novels that depict the frontier and Native American life in the early days of the United States. "The Last of the Mohicans" is part of his Leatherstocking Tales series, which also includes "The Pioneers," "The Prairie," "The Pathfinder," and "The Deerslayer." The Leatherstocking Tales are considered some of the earliest examples of American literature and are significant for their portrayal of the American frontier and the character Natty Bumppo, also known as Hawkeye.

"The Last of the Mohicans": is set against the backdrop of the French and Indian War (1754– 1763) and follows the adventures of Hawkeye, Chingachgook, and Uncas, the last members of

the Mohican tribe. The novel explores themes of race, war, and the clash between European and Native American cultures. James Fenimore Cooper's works, including "The Last of the Mohicans," were widely read both in the United States and abroad. His romanticized portrayals of the American frontier influenced subsequent literature and perceptions of Native American culture. While Cooper's work was popular, it also faced criticism, particularly for its romanticized and idealized depictions of Native Americans. However, his impact on American literature and the portrayal of the frontier cannot be overstated. The first edition of "The Last of the Mohicans" holds historical and literary significance, and original copies are highly sought after by collectors. The three-volume format was common for novels of the time, and first editions are particularly valuable in the world of rare books. The book's themes and characters have left a lasting imprint on American literature and popular culture. Item ID#0532. Price (USD) $5,200.00

Two very Fine examples of Edwards of Halifax bindings with two exceptionally fine early twentieth century fore-edge paintings.

[FORE-EDGE PAINTING]. [EDWARDS OF HALIFAX, binder]. BIBLE IN ENGLISH. The Book of Common Prayer, And Administration of the Sacraments, and other Rites and Ceremonies of the Church, according to the use of the Church of England: Together with the Psalter, or Psalms of David… Oxford: Printed at the Clarendon Press, By W. Jackson and A. Hamilton, 1783-4.

Edwards of Halifax was distinguished English (Yorkshire) family of bookbinders and booksellers, of whom William Halifax (1723-1808) and his son James (1756-1816) were the most famous. William Halifax was known for his revival of the fore-edge painting and Etruscan calf bindings, the latter, which, if not evolved by William, were successfully adopted by him. He also redeveloped the art of painting under transparent vellum. All three specialities seem to have been carried on both in the Edwards' home town of Halifax, where Thomas (1762-1834), another son, was in business until 1826 and in London, where James and John (1785-c 1791) opened a book store in 1784. Gladys McKenney Molony (1907-1996). Born in Toledo, Ohio she received her B.A. at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College in Terre Haute, Indiana. In 1930 she married William R. Molony, Jr., M.D., and moved to Los Angeles, CA. She was a patroness of the Los Angeles Museum of Art and the Los Angeles Civic Light Opera. She donated her fine collection of Fore-Edge Paintings to Saint Mary-of-theWoods College in 1967. A catalog of The Gladys McKenney Molony collection of fore-edge paintings in the Rare Book Room, Saint Mary-ofthe-Woods College Library was apparently issued in 1973. Provenance: William E. fine. Housed in the original concertina-style full green straight-grain morocco slipcase, sides bordered in gilt.

Paris: Printed by P. Didot Sen. and sold by W. Edwards and Sons, Halifax, 1791.

A superb example of an Edwards of Halifax 'ForeEdge' painting on a book originally bound and sold by Edwards of Halifax in its original concertina-style green morocco slipcase. This is an immensely pleasing little book in period vellum produced by one of the most important families in the history of English bookbinding. The Edwards of Halifax bindery was founded by William Edwards (1723-1808) and continued by several of his brothers, half-brothers, and sons (by far the most important of the sons being Thomas, who lived from 1762-1834). This famous firm produced a number of important innovations in binding design, the most significant being the idea of concealing a painting under the gilt of the fore edge. This hidden treasure could be revealed, once the edge was fanned out, as a special surprise element of the volumes they bound-typically in Etruscan calf, or, as in the present case, in vellum decorated with gilt and blue wash. The painting here is rendered in the subtle hues typical of Edwards paintings-soft grays and greens, in this instance-and the scenic ruins are one of the favored Edwards subjects, second only to stately homes. This painting is particularly pleasing for its sense of depth, partly accomplished both by clever use of shadow and by considerable finely painted three-dimensional architectural detail. [FORE-EDGE PAINTING] AN EXPOSITION OF THE CREED A new edition. Edited by the Rev. C. Bradley ... With a biographical sketch of the author, and a list of his works John PEARSON (Bishop of Chester.) Printed and Sold by J. F. Dove, 1832 An Exposition of the Creed 616 pages, was a work by John Pearson which was first published in 1659. It was based on sermons he delivered at St Clement's, Eastcheap. It was one of the most influential works on the Apostles' Creed in the Anglican Church. Bound in full maroon straight grain Morocco, extra gilt on the covers, and spine with a Portcullis emblem on the spine and rear board, book plate of Edward Thomas King on the rear pastedown (upside down). A wonderful copy with clean text. Excellent Condition The Apostles' Creed (Latin: Symbolum Apostolorum or Symbolum Apostolicum), sometimes titled the Apostolic Creed or the Symbol of the Apostles, is a Christian creed or "symbol of faith". The creed most likely originated in 5th-century Gaul as a development of the Old Roman Symbol, the old Latin creed of the 4th century. It has been in liturgical use in the Latin rite since the 8th century and, by extension, in the various modern branches of Western Christianity, including the modern liturgy and catechesis of the Catholic Church, Lutheranism, Anglicanism, Presbyterianism, Moravianism, Methodism, and Congregational churches.

FORE-EDGE PAINTING of the Whaling Ship Samuel Enderby

The Enderby family had been tanners (leather workers) at Bermondsey, and supported Oliver Cromwell. Daniel Enderby, I raised money for the army in the Long Parliament, as recorded in Hansard. The family was granted forfeited estates at Lismore, County Waterford, Ireland, which were sold in 1660. After that time, the family was active in the 'oil and Russia trade' and traded with the New England colonies. On 2 June 1752, Samuel Enderby II married Mary Buxton, a daughter of his business partner, at St Paul's Wharf in London. Enderby died in 1797, leaving the company to his three sons Charles, Samuel III, and George. Samuel Enderby III (1755-1829) owned Britannia; the ship that made the first successful whale catch off Australia (10 November 1791). He was the grandfather of Major-General Charles George Gordon. Fictional references In Chapter 100 of the novel Moby-Dick, the Pequod of Nantucket meets a whaling ship of London named the Samuel Enderby, which has also encountered the White Whale. The Samuel Enderby was a real ship, which was in fact among the three Enderby company ships (the other two were the Fancy and the Brisk) from England that arrived at Port Ross in 1849 carrying the 150 colonists for the new Enderby Settlement. Chapter 101 of Moby Dick discusses Samuel Enderby & Sons whaling company in further detail. Item ID#0496. Price (USD) $1275

Boston: Little, Brown & Co., 1932. First Edition. [FORE-EDGE PAINTING]. NORDHOFF, Charles (1878-1947). -- HALL, James Norman (1887-1951). 20th-century blue crushed levant gilt, upper cover with central illustration of a ship in white, red and green morocco on-lay, edges gilt, concealing a FORE-EDGE PAINTING of the H.M.S. Bounty and a ship of mutineers at sea; quarter morocco gilt slipcase.

FIRST EDITION of the first work in the Bounty Trilogy, based on the 1787 mutiny in Tahiti. Throughout history, few voyages are as infamous as that of the bounty. Even before the doomed sailing, the naval exploits of Lieutenant William Bligh and his participation in the third and final voyage of Captain James Cook, were quickly becoming legend. Sailing with such a distinguished officer should have been an honour but this was not the case. On April 28th, 1789, the HMS Bounty was taken over by disgruntled crew members, led by acting Lieutenant Fletcher Christian. The mutiny came on the heels of a layover in Tahiti, which lasted for months. During this time, crew members began to form relationships with locals and acclimatize to the environment. In an effort to maintain authority,

Bligh began to hand out harsher punishments, which was not well received. Tales of rebellion have always captivated audiences but it is the series of events that followed the mutiny that make Bligh's story so interesting. Following their discharge from the Bounty, Bligh and his loyalists were set adrift in a launch with a set amount of provisions. Despite making attempts to find temporary settlement on the island of Tofua, the crew was met with hostility and forced to flee. Following this nearfatal encounter, Bligh and his crew embarked on a voyage to the Dutch settlement of Timor, some 3,500 nautical miles away. This mission would allow Blight to properly chart the coastline but it would also mean drastically reducing rations among crew, which was unanimously accepted. After a successful landing at Timor, Blight was able to return to England. Following an acquittal for the events that led to the mutiny, Bligh was appointed the title of Post-Captain and in November 1790, the HMS Pandora was launched, directed to apprehend the remaining crew members who had committed the mutiny. After capturing the remaining 14 mutineers, the Pandora ran aground on the Great Barrier Reef, sinking shortly afterward. The story of the Bounty has been retold in many editions and has gone on to inspire books, articles and films in the centuries since these events took place. Charles Nordhoff (1887-1947) was an Englishborn, American novelist. Nordhoff wrote his first book The Fledgling in 1919, following his military service. After its publication, the author was commissioned by Harper's Magazine to create travel articles. After travelling to Tahiti, Nordhoff met and married a local woman and was inspired to create the Bounty Trilogy, for which Mutiny on the Bounty is the first instalment. Very Good +. On his father's death, he left school, and was cared for by his uncle, a vintner in Channel Row. Here, Lord Dorset found him reading Horace, and set him to translate an ode. He did so well that the Earl offered to contribute to the continuation of his education at Westminster. One of his schoolfellows and friends was Charles Montagu, 1st Earl of Halifax. It was to avoid being separated from Montagu and his brother James that Prior accepted, against his patron's wish, a scholarship recently founded at St John's College, Cambridge. He took his B.A. degree in 1686, and two years later became a fellow. In collaboration with Montagu, he wrote in 1687 the City Mouse and Country Mouse, in ridicule of John Dryden's The Hind and the Panther. FORE-EDGE PAINTINGS

Famous book of emblems based on Egyptian, Greek, and Roman representations arranged in alphabetical order. Each entry consisted of a description of an allegorical figure depicted to embody the concept, which Ripa further explicated using references to classical literature. This collection came to be used by Renaissance artists, poets, and orators, to illustrate abstract concepts allegorically. It was particularly influential in the 17th and 18th centuries, quoted extensively. For example, Dutch painter Vermeer used the emblem for the muse Clio for his The Art of Painting. Ripa dedicated the work to Florentine Cardinal Antonio Maria Salviati, for whom he worked as a butler. Item ID#0183. Price (USD) $3,250

The Vulgate became progressively adopted as the Bible text within the Western Church. Over succeeding centuries, it eventually eclipsed the Vetus Latina. By the 13th century it had taken over from the former version the designation versio vulgata[1] (the "version commonly used") or vulgata for short. The Vulgate also contains some Vetus Latina translations which Jerome did not work on.

BIBLIA SACRA, vulgata Editionis, Sixti V. Pont. Max. Ivssv recognita: 1637 Complete, bound in modern full sheep, 810pp plus index. The Vulgate (/ˈvʌlɡeɪt, -ɡət/; also called Biblia Vulgata, Latin: [ˈbɪbli.a wʊlˈɡaːta]) is a late-4thcentury Latin translation of the Bible. The Vulgate is largely the work of Jerome of Stridon who, in 382, had been commissioned by Pope Damasus I to revise the Vetus Latina Gospels used by the Roman Church. Later, on his own initiative, Jerome extended this work of revision and translation to include most of the books of the Bible.

The Vulgate was to become the Catholic Church's officially promulgated Latin version of the Bible as the Sixtine Vulgate (1590), then as the Clementine Vulgate (1592), and then as the Nova Vulgata (1979). The Vulgate is still currently used in the Latin Church. The Catholic Church affirmed the Vulgate as its official Latin Bible at the Council of Trent (1545–1563), though there was no authoritative edition at that time.[2] The Clementine edition of the Vulgate became the standard Bible text of the Roman Rite of the Catholic Church, and remained so until 1979 when the Nova Vulgata was promulgated. first edition of this work appeared in 1601. It caused a scandal because Pierre Charron defended religious tolerance, which led to him being accused of atheism. Charron separated religion from morality, opening the space for secular thought. The work was put in the Index. Bound in modern ¼ Sheep marble sides vellum tips very good condition throughout.

Legacy: While Charron's work may not be as widely known today as some other philosophical texts from the same period, "De la Sagesse" remains an important piece in the history of French philosophy. TRAVELS & VOYAGES… NARRATIVE OF THE BRITONS’ VOYAGE TO PITCAIRN’S Shillibeer Published by Law and Whittaker, UK, 1817

Content: "De la Sagesse" is a moral and philosophical treatise divided into three books. Charron draws from a wide range of philosophical and theological sources, including Montaigne, to discuss topics such as human nature, morality, and the pursuit of wisdom. The work reflects Charron's attempt to reconcile classical philosophy with Christian thought. Influence: Charron's work had a significant influence on later French philosophers, including Blaise Pascal and René Descartes. Pascal, in particular, engaged with Charron's ideas in his own philosophical and theological writings. Style: The writing style of "De la Sagesse" is characterized by its erudition and its engagement with diverse philosophical traditions. Charron explores the complexities of human nature and morality with a thoughtful and reflective approach.

considerations on the expedition s goals. In addition to the more formal element of his reporting, the work is full of Franklin s observations on the landscape, its people, climate, and wildlife. Published in a Quarto format (268 x 215mm).

Once there, he was to survey and chart the coast as it stretched eastwards from the mouth of the Coppermine River. The expedition lasted three years, during which Franklin and his crew surveyed more than 5,000 miles of the Canadian coastline. It was a journey of unimaginable hardship. Over the course of the three years, Franklin lost eleven of the twenty men in his party. Most of them succumbed to starvation and exposure, but there appears to have been at least one murder, and for years there were rumors of cannibalism.
