What Is Poor in Spirit?

Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

A person who is poor has little money.

They may have little food. Poor children may not have the toys and the clothes that you may have. Some poor people don’t even have their own homes! That is very sad.

What Is a Humble Person?

Many poor people are humble.

They have to ask other people for help.

A humble person is not proud or bold when they ask for help.

Giving Alms

God wants us to help people that need help if we can.

He said to give to the poor.

When we give to the poor it is called alms.

Our church gives alms to the poor, but what can children do?

What Can You Do?

Children don’t have money to give but they can be nice and share with people.

If you have two cookies and someone else doesn’t have a cookie it is a good thing to share.

If you are playing with a toy it is good to share with someone else and to take turns playing.

God said to be poor in spirit. What else does poor in spirit mean?

A person who is poor in spirit is not spending all of their time trying to be rich and trying to have great things in the world. They are much more interested in obeying God and keeping his commandments.

They know that riches are not permanent and cannot save you from something bad happening to you.

They try very hard to obey God so that they can enter into the kingdom of heaven. That is why they are so willing to share what they have. If their brother is poor and in need they are willing to share with them.

Money and food are not the only things that we need to share. The most important thing that we share is the word of God.

We must be kind to people and show love and concern for them. That is why we teach classes in church and sing songs. We are sharing God’s word with our brothers and sisters in the church.
