THE CHALLENGE: In broiler houses, ensuring the health and hydration of poultry is paramount. However, one of the often-overlooked challenges is the formation of biofilm in drinker systems. Biofilms are collections of microorganisms that adhere to surfaces and form a protective slime. In drinker systems, this not only impedes water flow but also poses a health risk to the flock.

THE PROCESS: The formation of biofilm in drinker systems undergoes several stages: ATTACHMENT: Initially, free-floating bacteria adhere to the inner surfaces of the drinker lines.

This stage is critical as the bacteria begin to form a base layer.

COLONIZATION: After attachment, bacteria start to multiply rapidly, creating colonies. These colonies produce extracellular substances that help in adhering more firmly to the surface and provide a matrix for further bacterial growth.

GROWTH: As more bacteria accumulate, the biofilm thickens and matures. This stage poses significant challenges as mature biofilms are more resistant to disinfectants and can release bacteria into the water, potentially affecting the poultry’s health.

IMPLICATIONS AND PREVENTION: The presence of biofilm can lead to reduced water flow, increased bacterial load in the drinking water, and higher risks of diseases spreading among the poultry. DILUTIONS Dilutions play a significant role in biosecurity, particularly in the context of animal cleaning and disinfection. Here are a few key reasons why dilutions are important for biosecurity: EFFICACY: Detergents and Disinfectants need to be at the correct concentration to effectively clean the surfaces or kill/neutralize pathogens. If the concentration is too low (over-dilution), the product may not effectively kill all the pathogens.

If it’s too high (under-dilution), it could be wasteful, costly, and potentially harmful to animals or the environment.

SAFETY: High concentrations of some chemicals can be harmful or toxic to both humans and animals. Proper dilution helps to ensure that the product is safe to use.

COST-EFFECTIVENESS: Using the correct dilution means you’re not wasting product. Overuse of a concentrated product can result in unnecessary costs.
