Hygiene Excellence: Quality Milk and Healthy Livestock Proper hygiene in dairy farming directly affects both the quality of milk produced and the overall health of the livestock. However, good hygiene goes beyond mere cleanliness. It plays a pivotal role in ensuring optimal milk yield and maintaining the cows’ well-being.

One of the primary concerns in dairy farming is Mastitis, an inflammation of the udder. This condition can quickly spread among cows, especially during milking or even while they rest. Therefore, it becomes imperative to maintain a clean and controlled environment. Key measures include: Pre-milking Procedures: Clean and sanitize the cows’ teats before milking to prevent any bacterial transmission.

Post-milking Care: Disinfect the teats immediately after milking. This step not only reduces the risk of Mastitis but also promotes teat health.

Equipment Maintenance: Clean all milking equipment after use. Eliminating any leftover residue is crucial, as it prevents bacterial growth that can compromise milk quality.

Effective Cleaning Agents: Always use cleaning products specially designed for the intended operations.

These should be efficient in breaking down proteins and fats.

By integrating stringent hygiene practices, regular equipment maintenance, and specialized treatments like dry cow therapy, dairy farmers can significantly reduce the incidence of Mastitis. This integrated approach ensures the health of the cows and consistently delivers high-quality milk.

MASTITIS PREVENTION

PREPARATION MILKING

• Holding pens and walkways should be kept clean

• Ensure to wear appropriate PPE

• Clean teat and udder

• Wash clusters when it becomes soiled, comes in contact with the floor or infected equipment/animals

• Complete foremilk Pre-dip • Wipe dry before milking

• Milk infected animals last • Clean and disinfect before next use

TEAT DIPPING • Spray or dip the full length of each teat.

• Treat damaged or sore teats with udder salve/cream or ointment • Animals should remain upright for 30 minutes post milk • Empty teat dip cups

ENVIRONMENTAL HYGIENE AND BIOSECURITY • Walkways and yards to be kept clean • Clean and disinfect farm vehicles and equipment on a regular basis • Prevent/drain pools of standing water • Ensure to use foot and wheel dip baths • Identify each Critical Control Point and develop plan to control the risk.

PEN HYGIENE • Maintain buildings in good condition • Muck out frequently • Only use approved disinfectants

PRE - MILKING 1. Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water, or use an alcohol based hand santizer if no water is available.

2. Inspect the udder for any signs of swelling, warmth, or discomfort, and always check the foremilk from each teat before milking. This aids in early identification of mastitis.

3. Before applying a teat disinfectant, ensure the teats are clean and dry.

4. Apply a pre-milking disinfectant to the teats to promote milk flow.

5. Each teat should be fully cleaned and dried using a separate paper towel. This ensures a secure fit for the milking cluster and minimizes the risk of milk contamination.

MILKING 1. Connect the milking unit after stimulation or pre-milking application.

2. Properly position the milking cluster for optimal results.

3. Do not mix milk from animals treated with antibiotics or those infected into the main storage tank.

4. After detaching the cluster, inspect the teats for any indications of vacuum fluctuations..

5. If a cluster drops on the ground, rinse it thoroughly and disinfect before using it again.

POST MILKING 1. After completing the milking, apply the chosen disinfectant to each teat by dipping, spraying or foaming..

2. Make certain that the disinfectant solution thoroughly covers the entire teat surface.

3. After milking, allow the animals to remain standing for about 30 minutes. This helps the teat canals to seal naturally.

4. Once milking is done, dispose of any remaining disinfectant solution and clean the teat dip cups thoroughly.

5. For each milking session, always use a freshly prepared disinfectant solution.

THE IMPORTANCE OF DILUTION Dilutions play a significant role in biosecurity, particularly in the context of animal cleaning and disinfection. Here are a few key reasons why dilutions are important for biosecurity: EFFICACY: Detergents and Disinfectants need to be at the correct concentration to effectively clean the surfaces or kill/neutralize pathogens. If the concentration is too low (over-dilution), the product may not effectively kill all the pathogens.

If it’s too high (under-dilution), it could be wasteful, costly, and potentially harmful to animals or the environment.

SAFETY: High concentrations of some chemicals can be harmful or toxic to both humans and animals. Proper dilution helps to ensure that the product is safe to use.

COST-EFFECTIVENESS: Using the correct dilution means you’re not wasting product. Overuse of a concentrated product can result in unnecessary costs.

RESISTANCE MANAGEMENT: Using the appropriate concentration of a disinfectant is important for managing resistance. If a low concentration of disinfectant is used, it might not kill all pathogens, potentially leading to the development of resistant strains.
