ARTICLE BY: Jared Patterson, Executive Vice President of Houston-Based Able Power Management I started my career in the electricity industry on August 29, 2005 – the day Hurricane Katrina slammed into the southern Louisiana Gulf Coast. Since then, it’s been one revolution after the other in an ever-changing energy marketplace. The fracking revolution in 2008-2009, the Super Bowl freeze of 2011 followed by 100 days of 100-degree heat that same year, the polar vortex of 2014, natural gas becoming a global commodity via Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) exports in early 2016, the August 2019 summer pinch, and certainly, demand plummeting during COVID in 2020 followed by the devastating Winter Storm Uri in February 2021. One thing is constant in this market: change.

Today is no different. The ERCOT marketplace is facing an incredible new challenge: the largest projected rise in peak demand in our state’s history. Fueled by 1,600 net new residents every day and the seventh largest economy in the world, massive growth in the crypto-mining, data, and artificial intelligence “tech sector” is expected to practically double our peak demand within just the next five years. Double! That’s like adding another Texas to, well, Texas!

Over the next year alone, the federal Energy Information Administration’s projected demand growth dwarfs every other US market.

How will we achieve such an increase in peak demand? That’s the multi-billion-dollar question because the supply side isn’t a rosy picture either. Decades of federal incentives to the renewable industry have largely pushed out investment that would have otherwise flowed into natural gas or coal-fired electricity generation in Texas.

However, this breakdown of “power generation capacity” isn’t the full story. Let’s take wind power for example.

Though wind power accounts for 24% of our total installed generation capacity in ERCOT, it predominantly produces electricity overnight or on cool days when power demand is low. Wind power rarely works during extreme weather, hot or cold, despite the need for it to perform. The best, or perhaps, worst example of this was during the horrific Winter Storm Uri event in February 2021.

Many of the headlines following Uri blamed natural gas for failing Texans.

This chart from the EIA shows electricity generation from natural gas sources over-performed leading to the worst of the storm while wind power dropped off significantly. Despite wind power providing the second-largest source of “generation capacity” for our grid, during Uri, there were critical times where wind power was the third, or even the fourth-highest producer of actual electricity to people’s homes.

Which matters more: Total capacity to generate power or total actual generation of electricity?

If we’re going to meet our insatiable thirst for power in the coming years, especially with nuclear power still a decade or so away from being commercially viable, then we should just build more natural gas-fired electricity generation. Unfortunately, we’re now seeing a three-to-seven year backorder on the turbines needed for natural gas power plants. But why?

That’s where we get back to the root cause of so much of our peak demand growth in ERCOT: the booming tech industry. Though cryptocurrency minors have nimble loads that can roll off the grid during peak times, data centers and the new AI industry demand a constant, secure supply of electricity. Therefore, while they are ushering in a dramatic increase in electricity demand, many will also couple that demand with their own generation supply for their use only.

This type of arrangement isn’t new to our market. Heavy industrials and other large power consumers have historically generated at least some of their own power to meet their needs. Datacenters and AI may do the same.

And while that will certainly help ERCOT manage the growth on the grid, it will not account for the other factors of demand growth – rapidly rising population and a growing economy. Good problems to have I assure you.

So where does all of this leave us?

We have a large amount of growth headed our way – related to population and economic growth. Renewables are a sizable percentage of our total capacity and are growing by the day. Nuclear power is likely a decade or so away. Components for natural gas-fired generation plants have a lengthy backorder and wholesale generators will have to compete for parts with the booming tech sector purchasing for their own use.

It’s going to be a huge challenge for ERCOT leaders to meet the coming demand with enough supply. Then again, when have Texans ever shied away from a challenge? I have faith that the new post-Uri ERCOT leadership team can meet the needs of Texans. My concern is at what cost?

Commercial and industrial customers are already rolling off the all-time low COVID rates and seeing their electricity prices nearly double. I expect more of the same over the next five to seven years, as prices continue to rise. The key factor for many will be their ability to actively engage well before the expiration of their current agreements to better manage the rise in costs over time. Employing smarter energy-buying strategies earlier means they won’t be restricted to the whims of the market or stuck paying whatever high prices are available at the time.

The new facility for Packwell will be used to bag polymers across all categories, using industry-leading equipment and proprietary technology to ensure the safe handling of products, and timely and efficient delivery.

Angler’s most recent project in the port region is TGS Cedar Port Partners Distribution Centers 9 & 10. The two warehouses located in Cedar Port Industrial Park will each be 420K SF and feature 7500 SF two-story spec offices.

Distribution Center 9 will be completed Q1 2026, and Distribution Center 10 is schedule for delivery Q2 2026.

APACHE INDUSTRIAL Apache wins business through project excellence & customer value Apache Industrial Services surged into 2025 with several new, multi-year contracts as the preferred maintenance and construction services supplier for refineries and chemical sites in the U.S. and Canada.

Apache provides scaffolding – including rope access, insulation, painting and coating, as well as abatement and fireproofing services.

CHEVRON PHILLIPS CHEMICAL Celebrates 25th anniversary with global donation of 25,000 hygiene packets In celebration of its 25th anniversary, Chevron Phillips Chemical has made a global donation of 25,000 hygiene packets to communities where the company operates. This underscores the company’s long-standing commitment to social responsibility and community support.

As part of this initiative, the Cedar Bayou and Pasadena facilities contributed a total of 5,000 packets to two local nonprofits: Communities in Schools of Baytown and Pasadena ISD’s McKinney Vento program, which serves the district’s highly mobile and at-risk student population. Employees from each site packaged and delivered 2,500 hygiene packets to each entity to be used for local school -aged children and families. The packets included hygiene essentials like toothbrushes, toothpaste, shampoo, soap, combs and razors, among other items.

Helps Young Explorers Wade into Wetlands with Summer Camp Sponsorship for 37th Year Each summer, the Nature Division of Baytown Parks and Recreation hosts the “Wade Into Wetlands” Summer Science Camp, welcoming students entering grades 1 through 10 for a season of hands-on learning and outdoor exploration. Held from June through August at the Wetlands Center and Baytown Nature Center, the camps offer weekly themed sessions packed with engaging activities and offsite educational field trips.

Since its launch in 1998, the camp has been proudly sponsored by Chevron Phillips Chemical (CPChem), whose support has helped it grow from just two original topics—birding and fishing—to a robust lineup of 16 unique camps this summer. A total of 259 campers participated this year, diving into science-based adventures that sparked curiosity and creativity.

Each camp week centers around a specific theme. This year’s offerings included “MOVE,” which explored physics and engineering; “Marsh-ians,” a deep dive into marsh ecosystems; and “Up and Away,” where campers built water rockets and kites to learn about flight and aerodynamics. “The best part is watching kids’ faces light up as they try something new, face fears, and interact with the world around them,” said Jina Faith, Education Coordinator for the Nature Center.

While the camp is open to all students regardless of residence, many participants are Baytown locals. “At CPChem, we believe encouraging curiosity is one of the most powerful investments we can make,” said Sagan Greenville, Community Relations Representative. “Our continued sponsorship of the Wade Into Wetlands Summer Camps reflects our commitment to nurturing a love of STEM for the kids in our community. COASTAL ICE & WATER Coastal Ice Sustainable Hydration Solution Initiative Highlighted at GCIF Coastal Ice & Water wowed a crowd of 800+ at the Gulf Coast Industry Forum with cold water stations, inviting seating and an interactive booth.

The booth featured a video HERE showcasing how the company’s Sustainable Hydration Solution PEOPLE Plan recycles plastic water bottles into new product. Kuraray, the first company to implement the plan, won the 2024 American Chemistry Council Waste Management & Water Stewardship award for sustainable solutions to water bottle recycling.

“When Mr. B.J. Hebert said we have to keep plastics out of the environment, I started diving into how we could help,” recalled Scott McAlister, president of Coastal Ice. “When Coastal Ice sells you plastic water bottles, we collect the bottles, cart them off and return revenue from recycling to your community.”

PORT HOUSTON MAINTAINS STEADY GROWTH IN THE THIRD QUARTER HOUSTON—Port Houston recorded sustained growth in August following a standout July. Total tonnage across Port Houston’s public terminals is up 5% year-to-date through August, reflecting steady growth across multiple cargo sectors.

After a record-setting July, the Port’s container terminals saw 370,430 twenty-foot equivalent units (TEUs) in August, up 1% from the same month last year. MEMBERS IN MOTION THE BETA FOUNDATION DBA BETA ACADEMY Beta Academy proudly celebrated the ribbon cutting of its new Confetti Campus in Southeast Houston, a $38 million, 85,000 sq. ft. elementary school designed to serve 1,050 scholars. This long-awaited expansion relieves much of their 600-scholar wait list and fulfills Beta’s promise to provide world-class education in state-of-the-art facilities.

The campus includes science labs, a library, a makerspace innovation lab, and vibrant classrooms. Beyond transforming education, the Confetti Campus strengthens the local economy by creating 40+ new jobs, employing teachers, instructional staff, and support professionals from the community. With nearly 1,000 families in attendance, the ribbon cutting marked not just the opening of a new school, but the beginning of new opportunities where children will thrive, educators will lead, and the community will grow together.

This interactive event was a tremendous success— bringing together more than 80 women eager to strengthen their professional connections, boost confidence in networking settings, and gain practical tools for career growth.

In September, the Economic Development Taskforce held its meeting at the Houston Methodist Occupational Health Clinic at Baytown The group got a tour of the facility and witnessed firsthand how Houston Port region employers can utilize the services to quickly get their employees ready for work, including preemployment exams, workers’ compensation care and travel preparation.
