"We Must Accept" Fitzpatrick

"Mr. and Mrs. Kettering," said Bro. Elmer Lackner, "have expressed their confidence and trust in the University of Dayton and its alumni through this generous gift pledge." "The Ketterings," echoed Father Raymond Roesch, "have shown their tremendous approval of what we are trying to do at the University. They have given us the opportunity for that all-important giant step at this time in our history." "The challenge aspect of the Ketterings' gift is a

gift in itself," reasoned Jerry Westendorf. "We must accept." These are only three of the remarks made at the "Thank You" luncheon for Mr. and Mrs. Eugene Kettering of Dayton who have offered the University of Dayton $1,000,000 and challenged its alumni to match it dollar-for-dollar over the next three years. We're sure all of you realize that the Ketterings have displayed this generosity toward the University of Dayton and, in turn, the University has created the Kettering Challenge Gift Program aimed at its 16,000 alumni. These facts are for history to embrace. Equally important is the initial response made by members of the alumni association. The Board of Directors of your National Alumni Association did not hesitate to accept this challenge. Bill Sherman, '41, Vice President of Standard Register Company of Dayton, did not wince when the alumni board asked him to serve as national chairman of the program. Bill Fitzpatrick, '39, needed no second thoughts when he was asked to serve as leader for the Montgomery County Chapter portion of this history-making venture. Westendorf, national alumni president, and Charles Graham, president of the Montgomery County group, pitched in to lend a helping hand. It was inspiring, as Father Roesch pointed out, to see the positive alumni reaction to Mr. and Mrs. Ket-

tering's confidence in 118 years of progress. "We must respond to this challenge," he said at the "Thank You" luncheon for our generous benefactors. "We must aspire to that higher plateau to which this challenge will take us. "It tells us," he continued, "that the Ketterings, as always, are deeply involved in seeking the common good for all people. We must show that our interest is in the same direction. We must continue our civic involvement. We must use our talents for this purpose." "This," said Fitzpatrick, "is an opportunity for us to succeed or fail. There w as a time when the plateau was a $25 gift from an alumnus. Then it went to $100 and the sponsor program was initiated. But now we must reach a somewhat higher plateau. The Ketterings, in effect. are telling us that we must pass through that Threshold of Greatness which Father Roesch so aptly described in last fall's FOCUS magazine. "It can be done," he continued. "No more than 24 hours after the announcement of the Kettering chal-

lenge an alumnus, who graduated less than 20 years ago, offered $35,000. This was an opportunity from an unexpected source. There must be other 'unexpected sources' around." Sherman expressed his confidence in this way : " I have a feeling of assurance which makes me believe that this challenge can be met. Bill Fitzpatrick and I have found that the people are inspired by the challenge. We have sought solicitors for this program. No one has turned us down. This has given us the motivation to go ahead." And Graham wrapped it up by saying: "Your generosity will become our obligation, your interest our concern and your attention our occupation." What more could be said? The Dramatic Years are over. We step to the Threshold of Greatness. JOE McLAUGHLIN Editor

Last Fall, we had the privilege of a distinguished campus visitor, Frank J. Koehl '31 and his wife Maybelle ... the purpose of their visit was accompanying their son Tom, a sophomore , to U.D . Frank, Chief Engineer, Ford Motor Company, Sao Paulo, Brazil, was amazed at the physical growth of the campus since his days at U.D. I'm sure the Koehl's are thinking the picture was forgotten .. . Never fear. Here it is.

WASHINGTON, D.C. Then just before Homecoming, the Washington, D.C. Chapter hosted our President, the Very Reverend Raymond A. Roesch, S.M. A dinner meeting was held Oct. 11 at Fort McNair. The Football Coaches dinner held Dec. 4, at the Bankers Club was discussed. The November general meeting held at Hudepohl Bierstube with Coach Donald J. Danaher, guest and speaker, was well attended. Plans were formulated for the International Communion Sunday and the 15th Annual Support Program. The next meeting of the board was set for Thursday, Jan. 18, 1968 with dinner at the Bankers Club. MONTGOMERY COUNTY LEADERS Members of the Montgomery County Chapter have been quite busy this Fall. Along with the customary responsibilities on Homecoming, Registration, Coffee Hour, and the Dance, a committee was formed to assist the students with campus decorations. The Archways, erected near the Fieldhouse were designed and constructed under the supervision of John Geiger '54, assisted by members of the Montgomery County Board and members of Chi Sigma Alpha.

HALL OF FAME The Athletic Hall of Fame Committes met in December and elected John Debesis '28, Cleveland, William G. Uhl '56, Dayton, and Harry Baujan, Han. '56, to the 1968 Hall of Fame. Mr. Baujan is the first honorary member to be admitted to this select group. More information will be forthcoming in the next issue of the ALUMNUS. START OF 1968 The January 6th dinner meeting of the board members in appreciation for their services during the past year was the occasion of the Chapter honoring its Three Outstanding members during the past year and conferring the Chapter Award to the three D's. Donald A. Oldiges '56, '63 past president, Montgomery County Chapter, received the Award for Chapter Service. Dr. Donald L. Turner '57 was presented the Award for Civic Achievement, and Coach Donald J. (Mickey) Danaher '54, the Award for Professional Achievement. James E. Cross, local attorney and member of the Board served as Chairman of the Awards Committee. The citations read: THE 1967 AWARD FOR OUTSTANDING CHAPTER SERVICE PRESENTED BY THE MONTGOMERY COUNTY CHAPTER UNIVERSITY OF DAYTON ALUMNI ASSOCIATION It is only fitting and proper that the Chapter Service Award b e given an individual who has demonstrated a continuing and activ e interest over the years, not only in the Montgomery County Chapt er but in the University of Dayton as well. In a ddition to regular participation in Chapter functions, he has served as a member of the Board of Directors, and most importantly two active terms as Chapter President. Though he is currently away from the Dayton area pursuing Doctoral studies , his deep involvement and enthusiasm for Chapter affairs serves in his absence, as an inspiration for those who remain. His efforts on behalf of the Alumni are largely responsible for the renewed vigor and activity of the Association. The many achievements of the 1967 recipient during his terms in the leadership of the Association deserves our recognition. We proudly present the 1967 Award for Outstanding Chapter Service to

THE 1967 A WARD FOR CIVIC ACHIEVEMENT PRESENTED BY THE MONTGOMERY COUNTY CHAPTER UNIVERSITY OF DAYTON ALUMNI ASSOCIATION We are proud to honor an Alumnus who has given so tirelessly of his time and energy on behalf of all men. He has evidenced a deep concern for the sick and impoverished and was instrumental in the or路 ganization of a clinic to provide needed medical attention for the poor in Southeastern Kentucky, an area known as Appalachia. For many months he made numerous visits to the clinic, often travelling half the night to treat the illness and disease of lost Americans, many of whom had neve r before seen a doctor. Such selfless, dedicated effort without thought of temporal recompense, typifies the life of this young man. We view as a further attestation to his civic attitude, his ready availability in the local area for those in need, patients or otherwise. His professional status in the community, enhanced by his civic contributions make us proud to extend recognition by presenting the 1967 Civic Achievement Award to DR. DONALD L. TURNER '57

THE 1967 A WARD FOR PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENT PRESENTED BY THE MONTGOMERY COUNTY CHAPTER UNIVERSITY OF DAYTON ALUMNI ASSOCIATION In a short three years, this young alumnus has gained a position of professional prominence and esteem, winning recognition across the nation. His youthful dynamic approach to coaching has brought success to his team and honor to the University of Dayton. From a player at U.D. , captain of the 1953-1954 basketball team, to a scout for the late Coach Tom Blackburn, his interest in the University has been dedicated and continuous. Since his appointment as Basketball Coach in March, 1964, he has grown pro路 fessionally, rapidly achieving stature and earning the respect of his peers in the College ranks . His noteworthy record, both in and away from the Fieldhouse has earned admiration throughout the area by many basketball fans and friends of the University. The members of the Alumni Board happily and very proudly present the 1967 Award for Outstanding Professional Achievement to COACH DONALD J. (Mickey) DONOHER '54

A FARE\NELL THAT HURT John McVay looked back proudly on a two-year 14-5-1 record at December's annual Fall Sports Banquet

but that night had to hurt a bit. Pictured on this page are 15 seniors who made the UD football record possible. They'll be gone next Fall and McVay must do some tall rebuilding. His 6-3-1 mark this past Fall was

due mainly to these men who received the annual awards both at the final h ome game and at the banquet. Not pictured is Bill Klesse who received the soccer team's Most Valuable Player Award for the second straight year. The boaters were 8-2-1, scoring the most victories in a U.D. season.

Seniors sitting are left to right, Billy Mayo, Jim Petrigala , Dennis Balbach, Mike McCall, Pete Richard路 son , Chuck Lucidore, Bob Thomas. Standing are Dennis Buchert, Bi ll Manley, Mel Taylor, Bob Lowe, Theron Sumpter, Dan Kramarczyk, Gale Wiesenhahn, and Barry Profato.

Above Left Defensive Back Theron Sumpter, left, was named the Flyer of the Year in the an路 nual poll conducted by the Flyer News. Students do the voting. Billy Mayo, halfback, capped a great career by being named the gridders' Most Valuable Player for 1967. Above Right Bob Lowe, defensive back, re路 ceived the Lt. Andrew Zulli Award from sponsor Vic Cassano for " best exemplifying the leadership and loyal characteristics which marked Andy Zull i when he played for UD in the early 1950s." Tackle Dan Kramarczyk received the Lt. Stanley Kurdziel Award as the Best Lineman on the 1967 team. Kurdziel was a lineman on the late 1940s and early 1950s teams at UD.

Bernie Kress, half路 back, by vote of a special junior class committee, was awarded the Junior Class Trophy at the final home game of the season.

A NIGHT OF BASKETBALL AT U. D. Most of you who have graduated from the University of Dayton since 1951 know the excitement of A Night of Basketball at UD. There are big crowds, a pep band,

spine-tingling plays, and many personal things which give you that wonderful feeling of being a part of something great. It is impossible to catch that inner feeling in pictures but artist Harry Wilson can bring back some memories through his artistic impressions of A Night of Basketball at UD. In this case it was the December 63-47 victory over Louisville.

UD Fieldhouse, home of the internationally known basketball Flyers since 1950. Familiar sight on a cold December night. Police路 man checks parking credentials.

It's a sellout but anxious customers wait for tickets to be turned in for resale. Bro. Elmer Lackner, in familiar pose, greets two of many friends in pre路game conversation.

14

Captain Bobby Hooper is in usual daring drive for basket with Unseld, Dan Sadlier and WHIO radio crew watching.

Mr. Wesley Unseld , Louisville giant, has a few words with the demonstrative official.

Father Roesch , UD President, from his jury box seat never leans back. The action gets him .

Don May, UD AII路American , delights crowd with another twisting, underhand layup for two points.

A victory creates a happy, boisterous crowd on the way out into a cold December night.

May has edge in rebound contest with Unseld, completing contest with 25 points, 20 rebounds. Unseld was 22路15.

Undefeated streak of 36 straight games. Nine city championships and three state crowns.

1926 Herb Eisele was honored at a Testimonial Dinner held at John Carroll University on November 8. The program biography follows: Herb Eisele is being honored this evening not only for what he has accomplished but for what he is. Eisele is a man who lives the doctrine he has preached down through the years. When he stresses the value of education over athletic prowess it stems from his own experience as an outstanding athlete at Cathedral Latin High School and University of Dayton and as a student graduated from Dayton magna cum laude. His lifetime work in athletics began at St Mary's High School in Sandusky in 1926. In 1928, he became coach at Cathedral Latin High where he established a sparkling record as coach and athletic director through 1947. Since then he has served John Carroll University as head football coach, associate professor and chai.rman of the department of physical education, d irector of intramural athletics, golf coach and director of athletics. In each of these capacities Herb Eise.l e has made the kind of friends who have gathered here this evening_ Friends who have been inspired by his peppery enthusiasm for his chosen field . Or maybe the field was chosen for him_ During the summer of 1924 when Eisele was preparing to return to University of Dayton for his junior year, he went to a doctor's office in Lorain, Ohio, his home town, for a foot examination. The date was June 28, a day that will be remembered forever by Eisele and his Lorain friends and neighbors. That was the day Lorain was leveled by a tornado. Eisele was buried under steel beams and debris for hours. When they pulled him out of the rubble he had seven ribs broken in two places, seven lung punctures, a broken collar bone and a stomach injury. Doctors said he would never play any sport again . When he returned to Dayton the brothers named him coach of the Dayton Prep team so that he could stay close to the game he loved. That taste of coaching shaped his career for him . In his senior year, with the help of a special shoulder pad and body braces, he was back on the Dayton varsity again, playing end. That very year, this 152-pound bundle of heart was given an honorable mention on Walter Camp's AllAmerican team besides making the All-Ohio and All-Catholic teams. This is the man we are honoring tonight.

1933 Daniel J. FitzSimons, circulation promotion manager for the Cleveland Plain Dealer, was enshrined in Cathedral Latin High School's athletic Hall of Fame recently. Mr. Fitz was a triple-threat artist under Dan Duffy and Herb Eisele '26 at Latin in 1926-1927-1928. He also was Cleveland's place-kicking champ his senior year. After his college-playing days at UD he played pro ball with the Cleveland Bulldogs for two years. He was a member of the Latin team that won the city championship, b eat Coshocton High in a challenge m atch for the state crown, and th en traveled to Waco, Texas, where Latin lost the national schoolboy championship to Waco High.

1934 John E. Craig is with Command-Aire Corporation in Waco, Texas. He and his wife, Kathryn, have two children-John and Kathl een.

THESE KIND OF STORIES WE LIKE. You might rememb er that in the last ALUMNUS we mentioned that Fred Aicher had been confined to his home in Day ton and would like to hear from old buddies. Well, one "old buddy" Vincent Trunk, who now resides in Newark, New Jersey, has been in touch with Fred and they hope to get together this summer. They haven't seen one another for 25 years, or since Fred left teaching at St. John's in Brooklyn.

Then the city took over the building and I found myself moving to Baltimore, working at my original profession as ~n engineer and helping to build airplanes for the Glenn Martm Co. "I found myself missing the old contacts. At the Baltimore Y I was offered a professdonal job as an instructor. I had k~pt in touoh with Harold Friermood, the former physical secretary at the Dayton Y, and he invited me back as a fulltime employe. -Keeping Fit No Game

60 Fitful Years for Lou Cox, Preserver of Men's Bodies Y'S sermon is a little different from those TODA usually appear in this space. I deal Norm~lly,

he was past 40, Lou Cox decided in 1949 he needed ALTHOUGH more education. He left D8.¥ton to take graduate studies in t~at w1t~1

the great athletic achievers; the champiOns of the vanous competitive sperts fields. The man I am writing about is no setter of records. His elaim to fame is that he has helped others live longer by teaching them to take care .of their bodies. Lou Cox has an over-simplified title. He is the Physical Education Secretary at Dayton's downtown YMCA. He is a man of dedication to the principle that strong minds and strong bodies go together. He could have become materially wealthy as a builder of machines since he was educated in the field of engineering. He chose instead to take a "Y" employe's salat·y to build healthy people. You'd never know it, but Lou Cox will be 60 on Thursday. Putting it mildly, he doesn't look his age, or anything close to it. It never occurred to Lou that there are pe·r sons whom he has served in this community who would want to be nice to hlm simply because he is reaching this threescore milestone in his life. But tonight some of his friends '.£ill get together at the King 's Table just to let him know what kind of guy they think he is, and to say thanks for pas.t favors. Like keeping them alive. The kind ' words probably will embarrass him, but they shouldn t. He has exemplified a way of life that richer men envy. It is high time that he begins to J..·:now that he is appreciated.

-Pool in the Basement LOU COX was born in Japan of an American fatht>r and Japanese mother. Although non-Catholic, his famil y Nlu c a.t~d hirn at a Society of Mary sclx>ol. When it was time to go to colJO?ge , he naturally chose Unive·r sity of Dayton. That was in 1925. "I was 17, and plenty scared. I came with my brother, who was a year younger," he was saying. "It took a long while to adjust. I finally got my degree in 1930 as a mechanical engdneer. "The depression had hit, .!lnd there were no jobs. I was a.n expert swimmer, though, and the old 'Y' building-now City Hall at Third and Ludlow-!itlll had the swimming pool

physical education at Springfield college, Massachusetts. . . After getting his master s degree, Lou worked at Y s m New England until called back to Dayton in 1953. Thill time he came to stay. The former engineer has definite ideM about the i.m,. portanoe of keeping the body fit. "Life's too easy in our economy," he s·aid. "We hav~ fx)' be committed to do something more than we are doing now to remain fit. Look, my friend, il the body goes to pot, there isn't much else. "There is a mistaken idea. that participating in games will do the job. Games alone won't do it. I read your inter· view in September with Carl Yastrzemskl and how he credited a Hungarian physical Instructor with giving him the strength, through a winter program, to sta.y strong through the entire baseball season.'~ (When Yaz's instructor first sa.w him, he said, "You think you're an athlete. Bah! You are nothing. In my country, you wouldn't even be second-rate." Yaz answered the challenge to become the Ball Player of 1967.) "Golf isn't the whole answer," Cox continued. "Or basketball. Or handball. Or squash. Or tennis. Or softball. In this country, there's an impression that you can stay in shape for life by playing games. "In most other countries, people condition themselves fi·r st so they can participate in sports games. You must exercise fx) stay ahead of the game."

-The Violent World of Exercise

LOU OOX admits that the average man doesn't have to make himself as strong as Carl Yastrzemski did to be fit.

"Developing great strength isn't the idea. The ability to pump blood properly is. Our interest is in developing the heart and lungs ,a nd blood vessels. The goal is to provide circulatory filtness." At 60, Cox conducts physical education classes, but keeps himself fit, he says, by running at least 20 miles every week. "Do you think there's a greater appreciation in this coWltry ~ for keepmg fit?" he was asked. "Indeed, I do. You'd be surprised at the number "t people In this town in the late 30's, 40's and 50's who are taking pretty violent types of exercises. I get a charge out of people thanking me for getting them started. There are Iiter&lly thou!IIIDds who express their gratitude sim.ply be· ea011e I taught them to swim.'' "Have you ever regretted that you didn't stay in engineering?" "Not at all. My work is compensation enough." As I say, thls is a totally dedicated man. Happy sixtieth, Lou, and many more of them.
