D e ar Al u mn us : On June 8, the University of D ayton will grant degrees to 187 young men and women- la rgest graduating class in hi story! They go forth to meet a topsy-turvy world. W ar, socia l unrest, a nd economic upheaval is their lot. Yet they seem not a t a ll distressed. They seem confident a nd fully prepared. Four years of the complete a nd balanced educational program have made them th at way.

You , who have gone before, under路 sta nd.

With many captains a nd workers yet to report a nd with severa l chapters unreported, the "All Out for Dayton" membership campa ign is well on its way toward success. Actual cash returns have already passed the $1500 mark. A gratifying number of pledges are also on ha nd with many more expected . All contribu tors to the fund will be listed in the June issue of the Alumnus. For inclu sion in the listing, the membership payment must be received no la ter tha n June 10.

The leading chapter in the cam paign and the five leading volunteer captains in key cities will also be announced in the June issue.

The Bro . .Joseph M a rtin Vacek scholarship will be given to a U. D. student for the third successive year.

This schol arship, amounting to .$200, is given annually by a n a nonymous alumnus in grateful recognition of a revered teacher. Bro. Yaeck, th e teacher so honored , is a Jubi la ria n, retired, living a t Beacon-on-the-Hudson, N . Y. How it must lighten his hours to know th at one of his "old boys" has not forgotten.

Brother H erma n J. Brendel, associate dean and head of the division of business administra tion, depa rted this life on Wednesday, M ay 7, a t St. Elizabeth hospita l. Funeral services were conducted M ay 10 a nd curia l wa in the Brothers' cemetery on the campus.

Brother Brendel had been ill of heart disease for severa l months pri or to his death . Following a protracted hospitaliza tion, he returned to the University where he seemed to 1:c recupera ting. After a week, comp ' ications arose which caused hi s return to the hospital where he passed away within a week.

W ASHlNGTON PRAISES U. D. D EFENSE BUREAU- Bro. Thomas P. R yan, C.S.V., director of the Council of Defense Activities, visited Washington for conferences on the university's defense activities. D efense course in geology, engineering a nd medical technology to be given a t D ayton were discussed . The university's long-ra nge program in defense co-operation was termed

by Dr. Brown of the American Council on Education a nd Defense as " One of the most active of universities in this country." A cour e on the Pa n-American union to be offered this summer by the political cience depa rtment was described as a long neglected need in the developmen t of Pa n-American relations . . . LENA RIVERS- The Thespia ns presented " Lena Rivers" as their major drama tic bit of the year, April 27 . DA VlD CONNELLY DIES- David M. Connelly, a sophomore busi ne s administra tion student, a nd brother of Jim Connelly, publicity director, died April 27 following a protracted illness since D ecember 3 . .. All outstanding students were hon ored at a special "Honors D ay Convocation," April 29.

Is Your Child Ready To Read?

Next fall a pproxima tely 3,000,000 little tots of five a nd one-half to seven years of age will skip off to school for their first contact with a systema tic, pl anned learnin g experience.

During tha tjirst year they will go through the greatest period of adjustment they have faced since their protesting arrival into this world.

There will be no mother to run to when things go a bit awry ; they will be forced into consta nt compa nionship with other little ones who, they will find, also have their rights a nd privileges; they will be confronted by the despera te task of getting along with others; fin ally, they will be faced with the necessity of using their minds in a directed, disciplined manner. They will be entering formally upon the great bu siness of childhood- the bu iness of learning.

If your child will be one of these little ones, you have proba bly been thinking that there must be orne way in which you can help him, some way of smoothing the rough pl a~e a nd of ma king his road a bit easier.

READING, THE F uN DAMENTAL PROCESS

Although children a re expected to learn ma ny things in the first grade, their most important job is tha t of learning to read. Since 99 per cent of all first grade fa ilures a re reading fa ilures it is only na tural tha t you will want your child to learn to read easily a nd without unnecessary emotional stra in . Wh at can you do to help him ?

To answer this question it is necessary to understand the reading process in terms of ,the a mount of experience background a nd mental, social and physical development necessary for success in beginning reading.

MENTAL D EVELOP M ENT

In general , and to avoid a technical a nalysis concerned with the methods of teaching, we know tha t children who have experienced mo t success in beginning reading h ave been children who have had a t tha t time a mental ability equal to tha t of the average child of six and onehalf years. The child who begins his reading experiences before tha t sta te of m ental development has been reached may be unsuccessful , and as defeat breeds more defeat a nd, fin ally, a n active dislike for the activity,

it is best to wait until that development ta kes place.

ExPERIEN CE BA C K GROUND

In addition to menta l development the child who is to be successful in reading needs a broad experience background of the type that can be provided by the average parent.

Visi ts to the store, the country, the zoo a nd pa rks, the circus, yes, and even to baseball games a re veritable treasure troves from which the child returns with rich, meaningful concepts of life about him. Certainly a child must understand what he reads, a nd things which he has never experienced either actually or vicariously can have but littl e meaning for him.

On this type of excursion the child must be the compa nion of the parent and not the super-cargo whose childlike questions of "what" a nd "why" are a nswered only on the basis of the vicious doctrine tha t children are to be seen and not heard. By all means listen to your child, answer his questions a nd let him talk as much as he wishes. We know that the child who can speak in simple but complete English sentences is the child who, other things being equal, makes the most progress in reading.

Wa tch the vocabulary of your child ; interest him in new words and in expa nded meanings of old ones.

The la rger the child's vocabulary, the more meaning he will derive from wha t he reads. Pay some a ttention to proper enuncia tion and pronuncia tion. The child who says " ta t" for "cat"' may sound cute at four years old, but may have difficulty distinguishing sounds at seven.

PROBLE MATIC THINKING

Tho e who do not understa nd are often inclined to put their tongues in their cheeks when they see first g rade children hammering and sawing in the school room . They walk away with the observation that children in their day were taught to read instead of to ha mmer and saw.

They, along with many parents of pre-school children who look with disfavor upon the construction activity of their children, miss the point of the activity. The point is simple: the children a re doing more than wielding ha mmers and saws; they a re thinking, thinking through problems th a t to them a re difficult ; they

are learning to keep a series of rela ted ideas in mind, a nd tha t tra ining in concentra tion carries over into the reading process.

Let your child build, tear apart, a nd rebuild ; better yet, get down on your ha nds and knees with him a nd wa tch his thinking develop. Be a pal- that's your biggest job from now on.

SociAL DEVELOPMENT

Your child will also need a highly developed ability to get along with others. H e is still very much a selfcentered little individual a nd needs training in fair play, in sharing his toys and pleasures, in "giving in" his share of the time. Spend some time watching him a t play when the "gang" is in your back yard. Home training in fair play and in getting along with others will pay la rge dividends in school success.

PHYSI CAL DEVELOPMENT

L ast, but not least, check his physical development. T a ke him to your doctor for a thorough examina tion .

H ave his heart, his sight and hearing tested. Don't be contented with the old Snellen Ch a rt eye examina tion th a t locates only the near-sighted child. Insist upon the type of examination tha t locates the fa r-sighted child who find s reading a difficult, if not impossible, task.

If you do these things, and if you provide the type of home in which your child feels secure and wanted, you will be doing your share towa rd his success in reading, a nd you can feel confident tha t when the school bell rings next September your child will start the first fa teful round well prepa red to find meaning a nd pleasure in those queer cha racters that we call printed words.

SPRING FOOTBALL GAME The a nnual spring footba ll game saw a n underclassmen team compo ed of non-letter winners go down in honorable defeat to a team composed of monogram men a nd the eight graduating gridders. The monog ra m winners scored as a result of an intercepted pass by Bill Knisley a nd by a conve ion by Beno K eiter to give them a 7-0 win.

The game, played the afternoon of M ay 3 in the U .D. stadium, was a ttended by about 700 Flyer fa n . The lone score came early in the econd qua rter when Knisley intercepted a pass from T erry Lynch and raced 70 ya rds behind a bevy of monogra m blockers to score.

After this tally the game settled down to a defensive ba ttle between two strong lines. The results of the contest foretell a D ayton powerhouse for next season. The Flyers should possess both a strong backfield and a strong line which will probably a nnihila te many a n opponent next season.

Biggest surprise of the game was the m anner in which J erry Westendorf, brother of Gene, who distinguished himself as a very heady qua rterback the p ast season, conducted himself a t the arne post.

H e had been tra nsferred from the end position, a nd after his performa nce in the practice game will proba bly be regular quarterback. Two freshma n backs, J ack Castignola, a half, and D an Pinciotti, a fullback, stood out for the underclassmen.

They, along with Bill Knisley, Johnny Wynn, Richard Struga rek, a nd Joe Quinn should give the Flyers a stella r backfield next season.

GOLF Although the Flyer golf team has been shooting top-notch golf it has lost its first two ma tches to da te.

On the tricky Mia mi U niversity nine hole course the Hilltopper tasted their first defeat a t the ha nd of the Red skins.

Three days la ter they received no better treatment f:-om the U niversity of Cincinna ti. The golfer have looked very good in spite of their defeats, and it looks as if they m ay wind up the season with a good record in spite of their poor sta rt.

BASEBALL The Flyers 'ta rted the season like cha mpions by winning their first five games before dropping a n 8- 7 dec ision to Mia mi. The present record of seven wins against one defea t speaks well of the way in which Coach Baujan solved the pitching problem which was reported in the April Alumnus.

The Flyers opened up the eason by sneaking past the Univer ity of Cincinna ti by a 9-8 score in a ten-inning fray. U. D. led throughout game, but the Bearcats took advantage of Pitcher Pa ngallo when he weakened in the ninth a nd scored five runs to tie the score. However, the Flyers' uperior strength enabled them to score in the tenth a nd cop the ball game.

Pa t M alone 35, at present coaching a t L a ke Linden ( Mich. ) high school has been a ppointed freshma n coach ' ucceeding Lou T schudi . The new c~ach will assume his po ition in September.

M alone is a gradua te of Western Sta te T eachers College, K ala mazoo, Michigan, cl ass of 1930, a nd is a product of the physical education school of Ohio Sta te U niversity, hold ing a M a ter's degree.

Nine years of hi11;h school coaching experience is the background of the new coach ; six years a t Vulca n, two a t Stamba ugh and one a t Lake Linden, all in the Upper Peninsul a of Michigan. M alone won two letters a t halfback on the Western Sta te grid squad, where he was under the tutelage of E a rl M artineau, now assista nt coach a t Michigan, a nd Mike Ga ry, present coach a t Western Sta te. Prior to enrolling a t Western Sta te, M alone played one yea r of football a t St. Edward's college, where J ack M eagher was coach . M eagher is now head coach a t Auburn.

M alone will also conduct intramural activities a nd assist in the Physical Educa tion depa rtment.

MIAMI VALLEY CHAPTER R eport meetings were held on April 16th a nd April 30th . M ore th a n fifty capta ins were opera ting in the area, comprising more tha n twelve hundred alumni. J a mes J .

After a two years absence from the campus, the June J amboree sponsored by the Dayton Boosters, will aga in return to offer fun to Daytonia ns M ay 27 to June I. The J a mbo;ec. which cons ists of a giga ntic carnival, a ma teur show, a nd the awarding of ma ny prize , is used to ra ise mon ey for edu cation al a nd recreational purposes a t the university. The Gooding shows of Columbu s have been con tracted to a ppear here in connection with the

Jamboree. Rides to thrill members of both the younger a nd older set will grace the campu s. A beer ga r" den and every conceivable game of cha nce will add interest. The Flyers scored three runs in the first a nd five in the fourth to give them a n 8-4 win with Pa ngallo a nd H cnz pitching.

In their second game with Cedarville, the Flyer repea ted their fir t p e rform a n ce b y winning, 12- 5.

Charlie Zwiesler hit a home run with the bases loaded in this game. The sudden cold wea ther seemed to have changed the Flyers when they faced Mia mi for the econd time. The Hilltoppers led throughout the game until the eighth inning when th e Redskins scored five runs to tic the score, a nd then cla imed the game as their own in the ninth by coring a run.

The Fighting Luthera ns of Wittenberg next felt the sting of the Flyer bats when they went down to defeat by a 9 to 3 margin. In the Flyers' last sta rt they fell with blitzkrieg fury on a game but outclassed Bca rca t tea m from the University of Cincinna ti and romped to a 21 to 5 victory.
