Sunday 14 May 2023 will be the general elections in Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is the 12th and current president of Turkey he came into power almost two decades ago Many people question his democratic leadership Under his leadership, civil rights (such as freedom of speech, abortion) have diminished significantly Turkey used to be a secular country but Erdoğan has encouraged the Islamisation of the population The Turkish government has blocked many websites to ensure that Erdoğan will be reelected At the beginning of his term the economy was thriving but poor decisions doomed the economy to hyperinflation The final blow was the recent earthquake which killed 17,00 people and showed the corruption of local authorities

Next Sunday Erdoğan will be facing a coalition of different parties He can manipulate the votes to be reelected the outcome will be crucial for Turkey s path towards either democracy or an authoritarian rule
