Message from the Head of School This past school year has seen a historic transformation of EB’s campus. The expansion and greening of our outdoor spaces over the summer was the culmination of many years of effort. This has been a long journey. It started in October 2006 with the approval of a resolution by the Board to purchase our facilities over a period of 20 years. For two years, the Board and the administration looked at various options for implementing the plan. Then in 2008, the opportunity arose to purchase the Lower School campus. Thanks to our careful planning, we were able to secure advantageous financing and tax-exempt bonds, and we acquired our Lower School campus in January 2009.

Frédéric Canadas, Head of School

About one year later, in March 2010, we were able to acquire the Middle School Campus. Again, the terms were very advantageous: since our mortgage payments were roughly equal to what we had been paying in rent, the impact on the operating budget was minimal. When we first heard that the warehouse property might come up for sale, we knew opportunities like that don’t come along often, and that we needed to seize the moment in order to finally alleviate overcrowding on our playground and offer our students a green space to learn and grow. In September 2013, after many conversations with the warehouse owner, we closed escrow on the property. This summer we broke ground, and now our students have more space and a wonderful outdoor learning environment. This is a huge accomplishment and a major milestone in our school’s history, and we want to thank the many people who helped make it possible: • The 366 donors—including four foundations!—who so generously gave $2,793,000 to offer EB’s students a larger, greener campus. • The Board of Trustees, whose members put in countless hours to advance the mission of EB. A number of them deserve special thanks for their vision: – Board Chairs Ayman Fawaz, Lynn Van Housen, and Peter Secor – Finance Chairs John Rosenthal, Thomas Clydesdale and Mark Poff – Buildings and Grounds Chairs: Tim Stokes, Tanu Sankalia and Jeff Loustau – Our Campus Campaign Co-Chairs Hélène Cahen, Berit Ashla, Loy Sheflott, Peter Secor, and Al Moore – Florence Kragen, our Director of Advancement, and her team – Antoine Portales, our Director of Business and Finance. This campaign has truly been transformative, and it was amazing to see so many people dedicate so much time and resources to offer our students a better campus.

and the Chair of the Board of Trustees This year also saw some important changes in our programs as we reorganized the Academic Department in order to provide better support for our teachers. The most visible change was the creation of Curriculum Coordinator positions by language and by level; the Curriculum Coordinators worked to reinforce and harmonize the curriculum, especially in Math, Science and Art. Our high school placement continues to be excellent. To choose just one example among many: all the students who applied to College Prep were offered admission. Of our students who go on to public high schools, many choose to pursue a global curriculum by entering the International Baccalaureate program at Berkeley High. These results—along with our college placement, which you can view on page 12 are a testament to the quality of teaching at EB, and we would like to thank our dedicated faculty for the hard work they do. We would also like to thank our outgoing trustees. The talent and dedication of Hélène Cahen, Christine Chapon, Tamara Daney, Joanne Hom-Addis and Tanu Sankalia will be missed, as will that of Faculty Board Participant Sue Campbell and PA Co-Presidents Andrea Bacigalupo-Lee and Setenay Bozkurt Frucht. We welcome incoming trustees Catherine Dower, Emma Gimon, Josh Meyer and Alexandra Thusy-Privat as well as PA Co-Presidents Nadine Amarelo and Renee Cole Clyde, Faculty Participant Ariel Wittman, and Faculty Visitor Suzanne Wallace. We look forward to having their expertise on the board and are grateful for their willingness to serve the school in this way. John Palmer, who joined the Board in 2012, is the incoming Board Chair. John brings a wealth of experience to the role—both through his professional experience as an attorney in public finance with Orrick and through his longterm connection with EB as an alumnus of the class of 1988. We are excited to welcome him! We are grateful for our excellent faculty, our talented students, and our community’s strong support of our school.

Alumni Interviews These profiles were first published in our online magazine, EB in Motion, in August 2014. They have been edited for length here.

Saleh Tyebjee, Class of 1999 College Preparatory School UC Davis

Please describe your current work. I work as an aerospace engineer for Aerojet Rocketdyne, which develops and produces rocket propulsion technologies. I work on high-powered turbine-driven pumps which pressurize rocket propellants so that they can be burned efficiently. It’s a very cool feeling to see a rocket launch with an engine you helped build firing underneath it. How do you feel EB has influenced you or led you towards your choice of profession? I have always been good at and enjoyed science and math. EB fostered that interest by providing a unique approach to science and math curricula. Starting in sixth grade, we had “English Math” and “French Math.” The English class focused on algebra and later pre-

calculus while the French class focused on geometry. This split helped students understand math as a broad-spectrum tool or language, rather than a narrow-focused class subject. I have found that the most successful engineers see math and coding as languages finely tuned to solve certain types of problems. As students who had already spent many years learning multiple languages, I think EB students are uniquely adapted to learn the language of mathematics. Would you consider sending your children to EB? Why? EB has a unique style of teaching, which parlays into a unique style of thinking. “Thinking outside the box” sounds cliché, but when children are raised with a unique style of thinking, it allows them to find solutions that others don’t see, be leaders in their fields, and generally lead unique lives.

Aaron Firestein, Class of 1999 Athenian School University of Oregon

In January 2014, Aaron was named as one of Forbes Magazine’s “30 Under 30” list of promising young entrepreneurs. 14

Please describe your current work. I am the Co-Founder and Chief Artist of BucketFeet, an artist-designed footwear brand. We collaborate with 4,000 artists from over 60 countries to create really fun, unique shoes. We believe art is for everyone and think that shoes are a perfect platform to spread that message. How do you feel EB has influenced you or led you towards your choice of profession? Going to EB was one of the best things to happen to me. Learning a foreign language at a young age gave me confidence and a level of curiosity about the world that I don’t know if I would have had otherwise. In 2008, I bought a oneway ticket to Buenos Aires with no real plans but to learn Spanish. That’s where I met Raaja Nemani, an ex-investment banker who had quit his job to travel the world. We hit it off after volunteering with kids in the slums of the city and became friends. I shared my fun side-hobby, customizing shoes, with Raaja. Two years later, he reached out to me with a plan to turn my hobby into something more and we’ve never looked back. I think that attending EB really opened the doors for me in terms of being open to different cultures and ideas. Do you feel that EB adequately prepared you for life after EB? Absolutely. I think learning a new language and being surrounded by so many different ethnicities and nationalities made me realize at an early age that the world was an amazing place. The curriculum and teaching staff were excellent as well.

Pia Hauch, Class of 2003 Bentley High School Stanford University

Bijan White, Class of 2009 Berkeley High (IB program) UCLA

Will Brady, Class of 2006 Saint Mary’s College High School UC Santa Cruz

What did you enjoy most about your time at EB and why? In addition to the language piece, one of my favorite things about EB was the small class size and intimate community feeling. Our class was comprised of the same group of students from the very beginning, and we really grew up together. I felt like this was my second family, a wonderful international family I could always count on. Please describe your current work. I work at La Boulange, the Bay-Areabased bakery that Starbucks acquired in 2012. I joined as the project manager for the manufacturing and product development team. The added bonus is that I speak French on a daily basis since the founder of La Boulange, as well as many of the team members, are French. How do you feel EB has influenced you or led you towards your choice of profession? I think learning another language at such a young age opens many doors for EB graduates. Not only

What did you enjoy most about your time at EB and why? I most enjoyed the diverse student life present at EB. It profoundly affected me, and prepared me to be not only tolerant, but also interested in all other cultures that weren’t my own. Please describe your current work. I am an artist currently working in two-dimensional pen drawings and wood/metal sculpture work. How do you feel EB has influenced you or led you towards your choice of profession? EB allowed me to think critically in more than one language. But I wasn’t just learning how to speak and write in another language; I was learning the art of another country 15

What did you enjoy most about your time at EB and why? One of the things I cherish about my time at EB is the cohesiveness of the community. I felt completely immersed in the school. Maybe this was only an illusion of childhood, but I felt as if I (like every other student) was an essential piece of the student body. Please describe your current studies. I am currently a second-year student at UCLA focusing on Economics and Mathematics. How do you feel EB has influenced you? The gift of French has not only allowed me to remain close with my family in France, but also to operate as a professional within the French community. I am currently working as a journalist for Opinion Internationale, a French magazine, specifically under their section dedicated to Iran.

2013–2014 PA BOARD

THANK YOU TO OUR 2013–2014 VOLUNTEERS!

• Co-Presidents:

Parents’ Association

Andrea Bacigalupo-Lee Setenay Bozkurt Frucht • Vice Presidents: Nadine Amarelo Steve Levine • Secretary: Emilie Mazzacurati • Treasurer: Judy DeJesse • Communications Secretary: Renee Cole Clyde • Volunteer Coordinator: Stéphane Deléger • Room Rep Coordinators: Kim Nogay Karoline Robbins Camille Servan-Schreiber • Wine Auction Soirée Chair: Tracy Poff • Raffle Chair: Olga Popova

The Parents’ Association is at the heart of EB’s community. The PA Board—and other volunteers—bring tremendous energy and goodwill to building connections among EB parents. The First Friday Coffees have been hugely popular, since they give parents an opportunity to gather and get to know each other. The EB Commons, an online forum where parents can post announcements, has also been a very useful resource since it was launched in Fall 2013. The “apple bags” were another new effort that was greatly appreciated by EB’s faculty and staff. Several times a year, teams of volunteers distributed bags of goodies to all EB’s employees. Their efforts brought smiles to a lot of faces! These new initiatives were launched in addition to everything the PA already does at EB! They facilitate volunteering school-wide, and their efforts make a big difference in the classroom. On top of that, their hard work is essential to the success of major EB events and traditions: World Celebrations Petra Fibrichova First Friday Coffee Heidi Tasker Beaujolais Nouveau Stéphane Deléger Grandparents and Friends’ Day Nadine Amarelo The EB Raffle Nina Carbone-Pellerin and Olga Popova Teacher/Staff Appreciation Ellen Wang Wine Auction Soirée of the East Bay: Silent and Live: Tracy Poff and Claudine Ozzello Online: Ann Lefkovits and Françoise Rees La Place du Marché Nadine Amarelo and Robert Lee Spirit Wear Ann Lefkovits Scrip and Retail Rebates Natasha Boissier Welcome Committee Janice Kirk Parent Enrichment Tish Moore

Finance and Advancement Report

Mark Poff, Treasurer

Sharon Le Duy, Advancement Chair

Florence Kragen, Director of Advancement

Antoine Portales, Director of Business and Finance

EB completed the 2013–2014 fiscal year in solid financial condition. EB recorded an operating surplus of $398,067 for the year ending June 30, 2014. A significant portion of this surplus ($187,769) was necessary for yearly principal repayments of our loans used to purchase our Middle School and Lower School campuses. 2013–2014 was a year of generous support from our extended community of current parents, faculty and staff, Trustees, our alumni and their families, grandparents, and friends of the school. Among many successes this year, one highlight was the completion of “The Campus Campaign – Our Moment,” EB’s capital campaign. As of June 2014, total contributions to this historic fundraising effort amounted to $2.79 million. In addition to helping finance the purchase of the property north of the Lower School playground, which was completed in Fall 2013, the Campus Campaign helped finance the most visible change in the history of EB’s campus—the transformation of the Lower School playground and adjacent property into a wonderful Outdoor Learning Environment for our students and families. Notable results from our generous community this year included: • $486,806 in unrestricted gifts raised through our annual giving efforts and fundraisers, including the Annual Fund ($361,848), the Wine Auction Soirée of the East Bay and the online auction ($88,699, not including gifts to the Fund-ANeed), the Raffle ($18,241), the Place du Marché ($8,895), and retail partnerships of $9,123. • $694,064 in restricted gifts. Contributions to “The Campus Campaign –Our Moment” in 2013–2014 totaled $609,082 (including an outstanding $138,200 raised during the Auction Fund-A-Need). This also includes $80,782 towards the Endowment Silver Jubilee Fund, of which $4,782 was given by the class of 2014. Developing EB’s endowment remains a long-term goal and we are grateful to the eighth grade families, parents, and students for supporting this effort. We also thank the anonymous alumni family who developed the tradition of the class gift and the Citizenship Award in 2008 and continues to support building EB’s endowment through. Finally, EB received $4,200 towards the Field Mithoefer Memorial Financial Aid Fund and the Jeannette Rouger Professional Development Fund. Our fiscal policies and actions reflect our commitment to EB’s mission of providing an exceptional bilingual education to a diverse group of students. Specifically, two key elements guided our efforts: • Promoting excellence in the classroom by providing the resources necessary to support faculty, enhance academic programs, improve facilities, and strengthen the school’s long-term future. • Supporting the school’s financial sustainability and economic diversity through prudent fiscal management, a balanced operating budget, and ongoing support of financial aid programs. Diverse and generous families, parents, and students are the core of EB’s wonderful and vibrant community, and our achievements are the result of your tremendous gifts of talent, time, and financial contributions. We are grateful for your support, and look forward to our continued partnership together. Mark Poff, Treasurer 20

The Campus Campaign 2009–2014 Al Moore, who gave so much of their time over the last few years. Special recognition is in order for Hélène who chaired the campaign for five years with enthusiasm and resilience, and for Board Chair Lynn Van Housen, who played a key role from beginning to end of the campaign. All together, with the active partnership of Frédéric Canadas, Head of School, these leaders inspired our community to support this project when it was only sketches on paper, and really put their heart and soul into making the campaign successful.

Thanks to the dedication of our extended “EB Family,” we did it! In March 2009, the Board voted a resolution to launch the Campus Campaign, the second capital campaign in EB’s 37-year history. The campaign was to help with the financing of the purchase and expansion of our facilities. The dream was to provide an enlarged space where our students could really stretch their legs as well as their imaginations, connecting with nature and exploring the varied microenvironments that would be created. In June 2014, after five years of hard work, long hours, amazing dedicated leadership, and truly amazing participation from our generous community, we successfully completed this campaign and broke ground for our Oudoor Learning Environment!

• The Board of Trustees, who contributed the vision and careful planning needed, and especially the three successive Finance Chairs (John Rosenthal, Thomas Clydesdale and Mark Poff) and the three Buildings and Grounds Committee Chairs (Tim Stokes, Tanu Sankalia and Jeff Loustau).

Since the new space opened in September, it has been incredibly rewarding to finally see our students run on the grass, explore the seasonal creek, read books and chat on the benches, enjoy a class in the outdoor classroom, and take full advantage of a larger, more diversified sports and play area.

• Our architects, Matt Wadlund and Andrea Sessa, of Sessa + Wadlund Design Studio as well as the construction company Oliver and Company for their excellent work. We also want to thank Charles Debbas, of Charles Debbas Architecture, for his initial designs that helped us kickstart our Campus Campaign.

This huge milestone for our school was realized thanks to the extraordinary generosity and commitment of so many members of the “EB Family”, including:

We would also like to express our gratitude for the heartfelt involvement of our founding families and alumni families who, after so many years away from the school, continue to demonstrate their trust in EB’s mission and the lifelong value of an EB education.

• Our 366 donors, who together contributed an astounding $2,793,000. This total includes grants from the Wayne and Gladys Valley Foundation, the Flora Family Foundation, the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, and the French Parliament (Réserve Parlementaire de l’Assemblée Nationale).

On behalf of the current students and faculty, and the many generations to come: merci from the bottom of our hearts!

• Our Campus Campaign leaders, in particular Co-Chairs Hélène Cahen, Berit Ashla, Loy Sheflott, Peter Secor and

Meet Hélène Cahen Hélène Cahen has been an EB parent since 2003. She served on the Board from 2006 through 2014, was co-chair of the Campus Campaign committee from 2009 to 2014, and remains an involved volunteer.

How long have you been involved with EB? Quite a while now! We have three kids, and the oldest, Adrian, is now in tenth grade at College Prep. He started in MK twelve years ago! We also have a daughter, Morgane, in sixth grade, and our youngest, Axel, is in third grade. What brought you to take a leadership role in creating the fantastic new outdoor learning environment? going to happen there. I also feel that many new activities will probably happen now as the teachers and the community begin to realize its potential.

I really saw the purpose in that project. The school has been talking about this for some time: parents have always said “it’s a great school, but we need better space—more space for play, for PE, for lunch, for just greener space.” And it’s very exciting to see it complete—I think it’s making the school much more inviting.

Helping lead the campaign to create this new outdoor space was part of your work on the board. What should the EB community know about the Board that they might not know?

What did you learn about our community while chairing this campaign?

Everyone on the Board is a volunteer. We’re all putting in time and skills and energy with no reward other than to make the school a better place. It’s really just people who want to give back to the school, and help make sure the school is here for a long time to come.

We had to do a lot of education around the need for a capital campaign (it was only the second campaign in EB’s history and the first major one). But once people understood why we needed to raise funds, our community was very generous. I was especially impressed by the support of our alumni families who felt that this school had such an impact on their children’s lives that they wanted to give back to current and future students.

Finally, what makes you proud to send—and have sent! —your kids to EB? Watching my son at College Prep, we can see how great EB was for him, because it’s clear that he has some great grounding. A lot of fundamentals were there thanks to EB. And I watch all my kids with their friends—they’re really great kids. EB promotes that by having small classrooms so the kids really get to know each other, and that creates a real sense of community.

Do you have any favorite parts of the new space? So much can happen in that space now! My son came home the other day and said his class had had PE on the basketball court out there, and that they also played treasure hunt among the rocks and the logs. They experienced the space in a different way and they discovered new aspects of the environment—that seems to be a good indicator of what is

Meet Tanny Keeler-Hodgetts Tanny Keeler-Hodgetts helped found EB in 1977, and has remained a stalwart supporter of the school ever since. Her daughter Kate is an alumna, and her granddaughter Elizabeth is a current student.

When you first heard about the plan to start a French bilingual school in Berkeley, what attracted you to it? Before I had children, I was an au pair in Germany, and I lived in Germany for a while. The kids I took care of were trilingual by the time they were five years old, and I realized that it was the time to learn language. From that point on, I knew I wanted my kids to go to a bilingual school.

But you had no play space—nowhere for the children to have recess. Yes, we needed a play yard. So I went to the city records office and found that the owner of the vacant lot a few doors down the street was an 80-year-old neighbor named Dolores Meacham. So I went to her and asked if she would rent it to us. But she so loved the idea of kids playing there that she wouldn’t take money for it, and wanted us to use it for free. And I asked her then that if she ever decided to sell it, would she call us first—and then she ended up giving it to EB!

How did the effort to create EB get started? Our daughter was in first grade at FABS (now FAIS) in San Francisco; and I went over the bridge to get her all the time. We were living here in Berkeley, and one day I saw a flyer that read “If you’re interested in starting a bilingual FrenchAmerican school, call Mijo” and a phone number. And I knew right away that this was the school I’d been waiting for. I went right home and called that number!

What makes you proud to be an EB parent today—when you look at your daughter today, and now your granddaughter at EB, what do you see that confirms for you the great value of an education like this?

I remember the first meeting on a Friday night, we were all sitting on the floor at the Horwichs’ house. We didn’t have anything—no director, no students, no teachers, no location, no backing—nothing. I do remember when someone asked “What’s the name of the school?” Bill said something like “Maybe we could call it Ecole Bilingue,” and that idea just stuck. But we never doubted for a minute that it was going to be a go. We were passionate about the idea. And we were determined, just absolutely committed.

Being bilingual gives them a passport to another world—a ticket to somewhere else. For my daughter’s mind, putting her in touch with a culture—it’s a profound effect. We have family abroad; I can’t speak French, but she just gets along as though she’s been there all her life. It’s really a gift. And what brought you back to getting involved with the school again?

In the spring, we found Jeannette Rouger, who had been working at FABS. She agreed to be the director, and she was perfect for starting a school—she just charmed everybody. Right away she started interviewing to find teachers. But we still didn’t have a location. Bill, Christine LeighTaylor and I were all looking hard for one. In June, Christine said she thought she’d found a possible place in West Berkeley. She connected with Steve Oliver, and he agreed to lease to us. And by the fall of 1977, we opened with 55 kids and 4 teachers.

Most people give to their colleges, but the foundation is where it’s important. People say “Elementary school? I’m not going to give to that; I’m going to give to Harvard”... but Harvard has plenty of money. Get them at the start, build a great foundation, and that’s what makes everything else possible. Everything else is built on that.

CITIZENSHIP AWARD 2014 Every year, the Citizenship Award honors a Middle School student or group of students for acts of leadership small or large, for inspiring others to higher levels of civic engagement and for their commitment to building community. The goal of the Citizenship Award is to encourage Middle School students to take positive action within the EB community and beyond by modeling the EB Mission and values. Isabella Estrada (Class of 2014) was selected by the Citizenship Award Committee composed of the Social Responsibility Coordinator, the Environmental Sustainability Coordinator, the Middle School Head, a Grade 5 student and an EB alum currently in high school, with feedback from the Middle School students. Isabella Estrada was commended first and foremost for her daily interactions which have always been kind, respectful and helpful. A Student Council member and co-president, Isabella has also run fundraising activities of her own initiative; such as an ice cream sale to benefit the Children’s Hospital or the sale of collapsable water bottles for the Clean Water Project. We are proud of Isabella Estrada for her support of the EB communities and other worthy organizations. Isabella’s name was engraved on a plaque at the Middle School, and the alumni family who instituted this award made a $1,000 donation to EB’s Endowment in her honor.

ENDOWMENT, CLASS GIFT OF 2014 This tradition of a class gift was instituted by an EB alumni family who wished to educate our students about their role in supporting EB’s long-term future and creating an involved alumni community. We honor the students of the Classes of 2008 through 2014 and their parents for their generous support. Together, these seven classes have contributed a total of $70,389 (including the matching grants) to the EB endowment. The students and families of the Class of 2014 raised a total of $ 4,732 for the EB Endowment fund through a combination of student-based fundraising, a matching grant tied to student fundraising, and donations from families. This year’s student fundraising project incorporated the theme of sustainability: the students used repurposed containers to grow succulents from cuttings, then sold their creations at the Marché in a “jardin de gratitude” booth.

DONORS: Parents Khaled Amr and Miral Farag Zahran Abraham and Elizabeth Estrada Joanne Hom-Addis and Steven Addis Christopher Kutz and Jessica Riskin Michael Lukan and Laura Pantaleo Richard and Jennifer Lyons Georges Natsoulis and Ariane Van Der Straten Joseph Poppas Berend Smit and Blandine Jerome-Smit William and Valérie Sobel Chris Thomas and Dietlind Lerner Julie Ann Van De Wyngaerde Gordon and Berna Watson Students Malo Gostlin Zoe Kratins Nicolas Lukan Other Anonymous (in support of the matching grant)

We thank the Class of 2014 for their inspirational efforts, and hope that in years to come they will continue to support EB and the communities in which they participate. The G8 class sold succulents at the Marché in support of the EB Endowment

Congratulations to our class of 2014
