Message from the Acting Head of School

Dear EB Community, While my year among you was brief, it was full of opportunities, surprises and accomplishments. My mission was to assess, strengthen, and improve the school morale and trust—I liked to call this process healing. I believe we were successful in this endeavor, increasing and ameliorating relationships between people, departments, and constituencies.

Most importantly, we reconfirmed our commitment to being a leader in bilingual education in the Bay Area. By confirming the relevance and impact of our unique bilingual curriculum, we accomplished the following: • EB’s balanced literacy program was supported by an internal coaching program to enhance the development of strong language art skills in both French and English; • The bilingual Singapore Math approach which was adopted this year received support from the French National Education authority, and with additional training and harmonization will work in conjunction with the new French curriculum; • Our continued training in and bilingual implementation of RTI (Response to Intervention) and RAE (Research Assessment Exercise) provided additional student support, a critical piece in today’s educational model; • EB’s Social Emotional Learning program (a bilingual curriculum using “Vers le Pacifique”) and Restorative Justice program flourished through the work and focus of our faculty and staff.

This past year, we also looked at our commitment to the whole child and to an education reaching out to all aspects of a child’s development: physical and

artistic education, executive function enhancement and development of knowledge, as well as character building and social emotional learning. We introduced a coaching program to boost math and science skills, and with the enthusiastic support of our donors, will be able to enhance our STEAM approach with the creation of a Dream Lab, part science lab, part Maker Space.

The June Maker Faire at the Middle School was an amazing STEAM event to witness. Students, along with parents and friends from outside the EB community, led many exciting projects and booths, creating an inspiring and pride-filled event.

The year 2016–2017 was also a year of growth and reflection at the Board and committee level. We looked at ways to increase our financial stability, including improving our financial aid process, bringing the school substantial savings in only one year. We laid out plans to enhance and develop the Middle School and the Grayson Street space. We worked hard at finding ways to improve our marketing efforts and share how wonderful EB is with the outside community. We upgraded our technology infrastructure and purchased Chromebooks for greater flexibility for our students. We reinforced our base enrollment and retention prospects with an extra class in the preschool. All these actions and decisions were the result of many hours of work and attention, by numerous people, led by our Board Chair, Emma Gimon.

EB has a wonderful, collaborative relationship with Emma and I would like to thank and commend her for her invaluable contributions over the past years. Emma is always there when you need her; she keeps the Board active and supportive, and sets a stellar example for best practices. I would like

to thank all our volunteers on the Board, trustees, parents and faculty Board members, for their support and countless contributions.

I want to thank the EB community for placing their trust in us and supporting us with time, talents, and contributions.

We could not do this without you and every success is thanks to a large network of parents, teachers, administrators, staff and friends.

My thoughts are with you as you celebrate EB’s upcoming 40th anniversary.

Mon année parmi vous fut d’autant plus brève qu’elle fut riche en opportunités, surprises et réalisations. Ma mission était d’évaluer, de renforcer et d’améliorer le moral et la confiance de l’école — j’aime à appeler cette phase le “processus de guérison”. Je crois que nos efforts ont été couronnés de succès : les rapports entre les personnes, les départements et les différents publics à EB se sont accrus et améliorés.

Plus important encore, nous avons réaffirmé notre engagement en tant qu’institution leader de l’éducation bilingue dans la Bay Area. En confirmant la pertinence, l’impact et l’unicité de notre programme bilingue, nous avons accompli ce qui suit : • Le programme de Balanced Literacy d’EB a été mis en œuvre grâce à une coach interne visant à améliorer le développement des compétences en arts du langage tant en français qu’en anglais ; • L’approche bilingue en mathématiques, dite de Singapour, adoptée cette année, a bénéficié du soutien de l’Éducation nationale. Dotée d’un supplément de formation et d’harmonisation, elle fonctionnera en conjonction avec le nouveau programme français ; • Notre formation continue et la mise en œuvre bilingue de RAI (réponse à l’intervention) et RAE (évaluation de la recherche) ont procuré un soutien supplémentaire aux élèves, élément essentiel dans le modèle éducatif d’aujourd’hui ; • Le programme d’apprentissage socioémotionnel d’EB (programme bilingue “Vers le pacifique”) et le programme de justice réparatrice ont continué à être mis en œuvre et approfondis grâce aux efforts et enthousiasme de notre corps professoral et de notre personnel.

L’année dernière, nous avons également examiné notre engagement vis-à-vis d’une approche holistique de l’éducation et du développement de l’enfant : l’éducation physique et artistique, l’amélioration des fonctions exécutives et le

développement des connaissances, ainsi que la formation du caractère et l’apprentissage socio-émotionnel. Nous avons mis en place un programme de coaching pour renforcer les compétences en mathématiques et en sciences, et avec le soutien enthousiaste de nos donateurs, nous sommes en mesure d’améliorer notre approche STEAM grâce à la création d’un laboratoire Dream Lab, en partie laboratoire spécialisé dans les sciences, et en partie Maker Space. Organisée au sein du collège en juin dernier, la Maker Faire, qui présentait des activités STEAM, fut un événement formidable à observer. Les élèves, ainsi que leurs parents et des amis extérieurs à la communauté d’EB, ont mené de nombreux projets et tenus des stands passionnants, créant ainsi un événement inspirant motivation et fierté.

L’année 2016–2017 fut également une année de croissance et de réflexion au niveau du Conseil d’Administration et des comités. Nous avons examiné les moyens d’accroître notre stabilité financière, y compris l’amélioration de notre processus d’aide financière, ce qui a permis à l’école de réaliser des économies importantes en tout juste un an. Nous avons proposé des plans pour améliorer et développer le campus du collège sur Grayson Street. Nous avons déployé de nombreuses initiatives en matière de marketing afin de faire connaître EB au delà des murs de l’école, et attirer de nouvelles familles. Nous avons amélioré notre infrastructure technologique et acheté des ordinateurs Chromebooks accordant une plus grande flexibilité à nos élèves.

Nous avons renforcé nos effectifs de base et nos perspectives de rétention par le biais d’une classe supplémentaire en maternelle. Toutes ces actions et décisions ont été le résultat de nombreuses heures de travail et d’attention et ont impliqué de nombreuses personnes sous la houlette de notre présidente du Conseil d’Administration, Emma Gimon.

EB a toujours entretenu des relations formidables et collaboratives avec Emma et je tiens à la remercier pour ses contributions précieuses au cours des dernières années. Emma

est toujours là quand vous avez besoin d’elle ; elle assure les activités et le soutien du Conseil d’Administration et constitue un exemple à suivre en matière de meilleures pratiques. Je tiens à remercier tous les bénévoles œuvrant au conseil d’administration, les conseillers, les parents et les membres du corps professoral et du Conseil d’Administration, pour leur soutien et leurs innombrables contributions.

Je tiens à remercier la communauté d’EB pour la confiance dont elle nous fait preuve et le soutien en temps, talents et contributions qu’elle nous accorde. Nous ne pourrions y arriver sans vous et nous devons tous nos succès à notre vaste réseau de parents, de professeurs, d’administrateurs, de personnel et d’amis.

Message the Chair of the Board Volunteerfrom Spotlight

Dear EB Community, Finishing up my second year as the EB Board Chair, I continue to be inspired by the school’s mission, its dedicated and talented faculty and staff, and its engaged, supportive community. It’s a privilege to work in service of the school, and I look forward to continuing to do so next year.

A key role for an independent school’s board is the recruitment and oversight of the Head of School. We are therefore proud and delighted to be welcoming Mehdi Lazar as EB’s next Head of School during the summer of 2017.

The search and selection of a new Head was one of the Board’s most important achievements for the year. Pat Kirtland and Renee Cole Clyde, Co-Chairs of the Head Search Committee, did a wonderful job of steering the school through the intense and rigorous search process. We had a number of very strong candidates to consider, and we were very grateful for the community’s involvement, through attending meetings and providing valuable feedback.

Other major projects keeping the Board busy this year were (i) researching and reflecting on the school’s position in preparation for next year’s strategic planning process, (ii) overseeing the leadership transition, and (iii) supporting the administration’s preparatory efforts for next year’s 40th anniversary celebrations.

The year of transition created an extra load on the faculty and staff. They supported the new Acting Head and assisted in facilitating the Board’s recruitment of a successor. I would like to thank them for their commitment throughout these adjustments, and their dedication to sustaining an engaged academic environment for our children.

As Mehdi settles into his office, I would like to thank Dominique Velociter and Frédéric Canadas. Dominique Velociter has been an excellent Acting Head during this important year of transition for the school. Displayed in her work was a steady confidence, along with her deep love of education and children.

Her efforts have ensured that EB is well positioned for our 40th year. We wish her the very best as she embarks on new adventures in Bulgaria as the Head of School at the American English Academy.

After 14 years of dedicated service to EB, Frédéric Canadas enjoyed a year of sabbatical, and retired as EB’s Head of School at the end of June 2017. We are grateful for his many years with the school and his numerous valuable contributions that have brought EB to its strong position.

I would also like to thank Stacy Chandler, who has bid us farewell after five years at EB as the Head of the Middle School.

She has been a dedicated leader and member of our community, bringing expertise, support, and innovative programs to enrich the Middle School.

We wish her the very best on her next endeavors.

Lastly, I have six outgoing Board members to thank for their talent and dedication: Bénédicte Cambon-Ritter, Renee Cole Clyde, Pat Kirtland, Jim Levine, Stéphane Prunet, and Loy Sheflott. They have all made innumerable important contributions to the school and their influence will continue to be felt. Loy, Jim and Stéphane deserve a special mention for their many years of service: Loy served ten years on the Board, including six years as the Advancement Committee Chair and two as Co-Chair of the Campus Campaign Committee; Jim served eight years,

one of them as Vice-Chair of the Board; and Stéphane served four years, including two as Treasurer. All three have been greatly impactful on EB’s future sustainability, and their wisdom and collegiality were tremendous assets to the Board.

I am very much looking forward to next year, as we welcome our new Head, celebrate EB’s 40th Anniversary, and build a vision for EB’s future through a strategic planning process. It’s going to be a big and exciting year! I look forward to enjoying it with you as together we commit to seeing EB thrive, and securing its position as the leading dualimmersion school in the East Bay. I am very grateful for your support.

J’entame ma troisième année à la présidence du Conseil d’Administration et je n’ai cessé d’être inspirée par la mission de l’école, le dévouement et le talent de son corps professoral et de son personnel ainsi que par la solidarité et le soutien de la communauté. C’est un privilège que de travailler au service de l’école et c’est avec enthousiasme que je continuerai à le faire cette année.

Parmi les rôles-clés du Conseil d’Administration d’une école indépendante figurent le recrutement et l’évaluation du Chef d’établissement. Nous sommes donc fiers et heureux d’accueillir Mehdi Lazar qui a pris ses nouvelles fonctions de Chef d’établissement d’EB au cours de l’été 2017. La recherche et sélection d’un nouveau chef d’établissement ont été l’un des accomplissements majeurs du Conseil l’année passée. Je tiens à souligner l’excellent travail de Pat Kirtland et Renee Cole Clyde, co-présidents du comité de recrutement pour ce poste, à travers la mise en æuvre d’un processus de recherche intense et rigoureux. Bon nombre de candidats qualifiés ont été considérés et nous remercions la communauté d’EB pour sa participation aux réunions et son feedback.

Les autres grands projets qui ont occupé le conseil d’administration cette année portaient sur (i) une recherche et une réflexion sur le positionnement de l’école à la veille du lancement d’un processus de planification stratégique pour l’année prochaine, (ii) la supervision de la transition entre chefs d’établissement et (iii) le soutien des efforts préliminaires de l’administration concernant les festivités du 40ème anniversaire de l’école.

Cette année de transition a créé une charge de travail supplémentaire pour le corps professoral et le personnel. Ceux-ci ont apporté leur soutien au nouveau chef d’établissement par intérim et ont contribué à faciliter la tâche du conseil d’administration dans le recrutement d’un successeur. Je tiens à les remercier pour

leur engagement tout au long de cette période de transition et pour leur dévouement dans le maintien d’un environnement académique motivant pour les enfants.

Alors que Mehdi s’installe dans son bureau, je tiens à remercier Dominique Velociter et Frédéric Canadas. Dominique Velociter fut un excellent chef d’établissement durant cette importante année de transition pour l’école. Son travail a toujours fait montre d’une confiance solide et de son amour profond pour l’éducation et les enfants. Ses efforts ont permis à EB d’être en bonne position pour aborder sa 40ème année. Nous lui souhaitons tous nos vœux de succès dans ses nouvelles aventures en tant que chef d’établissement de l’American English Academy en Bulgarie.

Ils ont tous fait d’innombrables et d’importantes contributions pour le bien de l’école et leur influence perdurera de nombreuses années. Loy, Jim et Stéphane méritent une mention spéciale pour le nombre de leurs années de services : Loy a siégé dix ans au Conseil d’Administration, dont six à titre

Incoming Trustees 2017–2018

Jaime AraujoBézian joined the Board in 2017. She recently returned from France where she spent 14 years working in the wine industry, first at LVMH and then later with Terravina, the marketing and strategy consultancy she founded and ran for over ten years.

Having worked predominantly in Europe and Asia, Jaime came back to California in 2016 to become a partner in her family’s new winery, Accendo Cellars, based in the Napa Valley. With her came a French husband, Stéphane, and two bilingual and bicultural children, Aidan (G6) and Angele (G4), for whom a bilingual education was a key priority in the move back to the US. Having been lucky enough to find a school as wonderful as EB, it seemed logical to find a way to participate more fully in the life of the school and give back to this very unique and special institution. Jaime helped with the wine portion of the silent auction at the Gala in April 2017 and is an active member of the marketing committee.

Jean-Philippe Kouakou-Zebouah Co-chair of the Long-Range Planning Committee Jean-Philippe joined the Board in 2017. He was born in the Ivory Coast (Cote d’Ivoire) and grew up in Paris, France where he completed his undergraduate (CNAM-Paris) and graduate (Essec-Paris) studies in Accounting and Financial Engineering respectively. He also holds an MBA from Harvard Business School. Jean-Philippe has 20+ years’ experience in Forensic Auditing, Corporate Finance, Financial Planning & Analysis, and Strategic Consulting. He and his wife Jesica have one daughter at EB.

Emma Ragot French Faculty Participant Emma is originally from the western region of Vendée in France. She studied psychology and education and taught at the elementary level for nine years in the south of France. In 2002, she and her family moved to Berkeley to start a new adventure. Two years later, she was hired at EB to teach in Preschool, then in Kindergarten and most recently, in first and second grades. Emma has three children, all of whom have gone through EB; two of them have graduated and are now at UC Berkeley and St Mary’s College High School. Besides spending time with her family and teaching, Emma enjoys reading, cooking, camping, attending to her vegetable garden and her chickens!

Aaron Ross has served as Talend’s General Counsel since August 2015.

Prior to joining Talend, Aaron held senior in-house legal roles at technology companies Flex, Atmel and Technicolor. Prior to going in-house, Aaron was an associate in the London and Paris offices of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom LLP and the San Francisco offices of Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP. He holds a B.A. in Philosophy from Cornell University and a J.D. from the U.C. Berkeley School of Law.

Mark Westover Co-chair of the Long-Range Planning Committee Mark joined the Board in 2017.

He is the Founder of Nishioba Consulting, providing management consulting to early stage start-ups. Mark was previously CFO of Xmatters and has held a variety of leadership positions in Strategy, Corporate Development and Finance at LiveOps, Sybase, BearingPoint and AT&T. Mark received his MBA from the University of Chicago Booth School of Business and holds a B.S. in Mathematics from the University of Illinois–Urbana-Champaign. He and his wife, Dr. Barbara Galligan, have two children at EB.

Meet Mehdi Lazar, Our New Head of School

thus decided to be a teacher.

I took a job as a teaching assistant in Paris and got my teaching credentials. Since working in education, I have had almost every position you can find in a school!

What’s your background and what do you think serves you best in this new position?

Mehdi Lazar is the new head of school at Ecole Bilingue de Berkeley. He arrived at EB at the end of June 2017 from Dallas, Texas, where he worked as Head of Primary at Dallas International School and project consultant for the Mission Laïque Française.

Mehdi has broad experience working in international schools in the United States and is passionate about multilingual education. With his wife Caroline, he has two daughters who are currently preschool students at EB. Why did you decide to go into education?

I started my career working as an international relations analyst after my Master’s degree, but during my studies, I was a school supervisor and student tutor so I had some experience in education.

After spending some time doing research in Algeria, I was more convinced of the importance of education in changing societies and

My background is in social sciences (Master and Ph.D) and pedagogy (teaching and administrative credentials), as well as public administration.

I think that I am lucky to have had a well-rounded background that allows me to look at an issue from multiple perspectives and to have many experiences to reflect on. Being bicultural myself also helped me develop empathy and intercultural comprehension and made me a better educator—that, and being a parent! I am also a lifelong learner, continuously striving to hone my skills as a leader and always wanting to learn something new.

What attracted you to EB? I have been very impressed by the warm EB community and the dedication of all faculty and staff members.

EB’s expertise and experience in bilingual education is also something that was a key point for me as I discovered the school. I particularly enjoyed EB’s commitment to educating the whole child, recognizing that the 12 years that students stay with us—

from ages 2 to 14—are key to their holistic development.

What do you see as the strengths of this 40-year-old institution?

EB has a wonderful, warm and nurturing community.

It truly makes the school a special place. EB also has a very dedicated and experienced faculty and staff; that is an asset!

Additionally, our school has an impressive track record of high school and college placements. Our alumni go on to the most competitive high schools and universities in the country, and we are very proud of that. But perhaps most importantly, they are formidable individuals, open-minded, caring and productive, making a difference in their communities.

What do you plan to accomplish during your first year?

This first year will be a trustbuilding exercise. The most important thing for me is to get to know and understand the community, connect with the students, faculty and staff, and parents. We will continue to strengthen our academic offerings by developing our signature programs: our international residential field-trips, our bilingual Singapore math curriculum and balanced literacy program, our strong socialemotional learning initiatives, and our STEAM approach.

We also want to focus on

the operations of the school, making sure that we offer a very smooth user experience for prospective families, students, and parents alike.

Finally, the 40th anniversary is a wonderful opportunity for us to celebrate our past and embrace the next chapter of the school. I am sure that the community will take time to enjoy the celebrations and reflect on where we are going collectively.

What is your vision for EB? EB is the oldest and the largest bilingual school in the East Bay. I think that we can continue to offer an outstanding education based on that, and go even further.

Our robust international, dual-immersion curriculum is reinforced by foreign language instruction along the way. Getting the Chance to Dream

The 2016–2017 school year has been one of change, renewal and of dreams. Whether it has been envisioning a new space for our children to conduct experiments and explore science or providing our students with the tools they need to communicate effectively and resolve conflict, the theme of “dreams” has encouraged us all year long.

1. Building a Dream Lab Imagining a space where our children could bring together science, technology, engineering, art, and math, and use their two languages to explore scientific and design thinking was the foundation of this year’s Auction Fund for the Future. Through the generosity of our wonderful community of donors, $39,430 was raised to turn this dream into a reality.

The needs of today’s students have changed drastically in recent years, and educational institutions must continually revise and update curricula and space in order to provide the most relevant and meaningful education possible.

Both the French National Curriculum Guidelines and the Common Core State Standards reflect a clear emphasis on an increased need for project-based learning and collaboration. In addition, students with deep knowledge and appreciation of STEM subjects (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) are most poised to contribute successfully to a world that relies on innovation, creative thinking, and technology.

The Dream Lab, as a collaborative space that is shared by teachers, extended day staff, students, and parents, will help build a school culture of scientific, artistic, and design thinking that encourages and values collaboration.

Keep an eye out for the transformation of the current Art Room at the Lower School and additional space on Grayson st. at the Middle School into our Dream Labs!

2. Restorative Justice: Dreaming of a Better World Restorative Justice is a set of principles and practices that builds community and restores relationships when harm has occurred. The goal is to enrich communities, prioritize relationships, and create safe and inclusive spaces for dialogue. These practices support and complement other current school initiatives, including Mindfulness and the “Vers le Pacifique” method—used to teach social-emotional learning—and can be used to positively impact school culture, discipline, and academic needs. This program was selected to provide a larger framework for our Social and Emotional Learning curriculum.

At the end of the summer, the entire faculty and staff received a full day of training focused on Restorative Justice. The training explored the concept of “circles” where hierarchy is abandoned and all have an equal chance to speak and be heard, non-traditional disciplinary methods involving discourse and allowing the students to come up with solutions, and methods for tightening the sense of community in a group.

The principles and practices found in Restorative Justice—understanding the impact of one’s own behavior on others, collectively thinking of solutions or consequences, sharing about ourselves, addressing issues in a safe space, letting everyone’s voice be heard equally—have been used at all levels here at EB. From exploring themes of sharing in the Maternelle; to resolving playground conflicts at the Lower School; to addressing complex disciplinary issues at the Middle School; to resolving differences of approach or perspective among faculty and staff; to introducing a new topic at the Board level, Restorative Justice has given us a framework for better and constructive communication, problem-solving, and sharing.

We hope to continue exploring Restorative Justice in our SEL curriculum over the 2017–2018 school year, and will work to align our disciplinary approach more closely with these principles.

3. TEDxYouth@EB: A Space to Dream

STUDENT LIFE

It’s no easy task for a 13-year-old to deliver a speech on stage in front of a large audience, with photographers shooting away and videographers filming them from all angles! But eight Middle Schoolers embraced the challenge during EB’s second annual inspiring TEDxYouth event organized on November 12, 2016.

This year’s theme was “dream,” encouraging students to dream big, whatever that meant to them. From dreaming of a world without discrimination and the American Dream, to understanding how lucid dreaming boosts creativity and the path from dreams to inventions, to LGBTQ equal rights and MLK’s endurance of a dream, these young people gave talks that inspired us and made us think. TEDx events are rare at the Middle School level, according to parent organizers Hélène Cahen, Laura Clydesdale, and Jennifer Villarina, and our students showed great poise and courage during their presentations.

In addition to the talks, the event featured two art exhibits created by EB students: Dream Boxes Inspired by Joseph Cornell’s Artwork by EB 6th graders and Envisioning Public Art for Public Sites by EB 8th graders. Exciting and interactive activities followed, as students learned about food science and how it could relate to creating their dream soda. Working with art teachers Olga Popova and Sue Campbell, students built an onsite hands-on art installation, Dream-Plan-Create! In the activity, students created a piece of their dream world that was assembled onto a larger sculpture of a mind that the students named “Lunar Dream City.” Finally, students ended the day by coming up on stage and writing down their dreams for the future.

Thank you to Hélène, Laura, and Jennifer, our Middle School faculty and staff, and our student presenters who made this TEDxYouth event a wonderful day of insight, inspiration, and innovation for all. The dreams of our students leave us with bright hopes for what our future will look like.

2016–2017 Annual Report

Elli Nagai-Rothe, a coach associated with SEED, Community Resolution Center, came back to EB during the winter to work with seven EB faculty, extended day members and administrators. In addition to community building and conflict resolution circles, this group has also been exploring agreement and skill-building circles.

They have become our “Conseil des Sages” or “Council of the Wise”, providing guidance to other employees, meeting regularly to assess our progress with Restorative Justice, and making recommendations to help resolve more difficult situations.

Learning Beyond the Classroom Marin Headlands: G3

For their first EB overnight trip, our third graders head to the Marin Headlands to study its unique ecosystems and explore the flora and fauna specific to the area.

The students do a lot of hiking and direct observation of plants and animals, both in the wild and in a marine lab. Team-building activities round out the trip, a favorite for students and parents alike!

France: G5

Every year our fifth graders head off to France to enjoy their first international EB trip. With a 40-year history, this trip has become one of the defining points of many students’ EB education. The students visit museums, monuments, parks, and live with host families.

Coloma: G4

Our fourth graders spend three days at the site where gold was first discovered in California, learning about the Gold Rush, native peoples, and the ecosystem of the Sierra foothills.

Annual EB Overnight Trips

Seventh graders spend a week visiting the capital’s monuments and memorials for hands-on civics education and fascinating history lessons.

STUDENT LIFE

Our new middle schoolers head out to the Catalina Island Marine Institute for a five-day science-filled adventure of camping, exploring, and outdoor education. The educational topics covered are numerous, as are the many activities available, including kayaking, snorkeling, a ropescourse challenge, and much more!

level, and along the way meet pretty much every student and every teacher at the school. Even though it had been many years since I was a student, it felt like coming home from a short trip.

3. How do you feel EB has influenced you or led you towards your choice of profession?

Very directly, I think the influence of Mr. Nikoloff and Mme Marie that I mentioned above gave me a great appreciation of the value of a teacher.

I also know that a couple of my classmates are teachers now, so it could be that having exceptional teachers influenced several of us in this direction.

6. Would you consider sending your children to EB? Why? My daughter just started in Petite Section this fall. She loves it! I want her to have the same advantage I did of being around children from many different backgrounds. I hope she develops the same appreciation of other people’s experiences and appreciates the value of foreign languages as a tool for forming connections.

4. What would you say to parents just starting out at EB? 1. What did you enjoy most about your time at EB and why?

Playing with my friends, because it was fun! This must be the answer of pretty much any child about any school they attend. I enjoyed running around the “big yard” (now bigger, but we thought it was big back then). Later on in Middle School I remember being really excited about developing my writing skills with the aid of Mr. Nikoloff and Mme Marie.

2. Please describe your current work.

I am teaching 6th and 7th grade English at EB while another teacher is on sabbatical in France. I’m trying to get my students reading and writing on a daily basis for practice. I’m also trying to teach them to reflect and to understand some powerful communication tools.

Last year I also worked at EB as a substitute, which was super fun for someone who is interested in everything: I got to try every subject and every grade

As a new parent at EB myself, I have a lot of conversations with other new parents, and we usually talk about the value of being exposed to many languages and cultures, and how this opens up the possibilities to connect with all the other people in the world— how I have always felt myself an international citizen and never only an American. Additionally, they are always heartened to see that my French is fluent after all these years, and to hear that my parents became very proficient in French simply by being around EB for 16 years!

5. Describe your favorite memory from EB. I loved getting comments back on the short stories I wrote, and discussing Joseph Conrad’s books.

3. How do you feel EB has influenced you or led you towards your choice of profession?

Meeting faculty and students from around the world at EB, as well as learning to appreciate our differences, enabled me to be a more empathetic and understanding academic advisor. I appreciate students’ individual stories and I love helping them find their own unique path through college. EB introduced me to new perspectives and people in a way that more traditional education would not have. I learned early on to acknowledge and appreciate differences.

4. What would you say to parents just starting out at EB?

There are so many things that I loved about EB so it’s hard to pick just one.

I loved the environment the school created for learning and friends. I also really loved the opportunity to experience new perspectives and cultures.

2. Please describe your current work.

I am an academic advisor at UC Davis.

I supervise the advising center that works with the East Asian Studies, Economics, and History majors. I work with students to help them achieve their goals in college. I have a BA in Sociology–Organizational Studies from UC Davis and an MA in Education from Sacramento State.

EB is a great community—jump in wholeheartedly! The curriculum can be challenging for your student, but it prepares them for looking at the world through a global perspective.

Absolutely! Academically, I was very well prepared for the rigors of high school and college. Personally, my worldview was expanded, which helped me make more informed life choices.

7. Would you consider sending your children to EB? Why? Yes! I think the bilingual education and opportunity to experience different cultures and perspectives is an invaluable experience.

8. Anything else you’d like to add?

I really loved my time at EB. I love the community, the learning, and the environment in general. It was my favorite time in school.

5. Describe your favorite memory from EB. Gosh there are so many great memories, it’s truly hard to pick just one. I won’t ever forget the field trips around California (Marin Headlands, Pescadero, Pioneer Camp, Yosemite, to name a few), as well as ones farther away in Washington DC and France. 1. What did you enjoy most about your time at EB and why?

The people at EB are really the ones who shape the experience. I had more than a handful of unique teachers whom I will always remember, and our family became friends with a lot of the school staff as well.

I really enjoyed being in a multilingual environment where we could all switch at will between different languages depending on which best conveyed the message. (I later moved to Montréal in search of that same type of environment.) I also always thought it was special to be able to feel part of a different culture, and to have experienced a curriculum that is different from any other school’s in the area. Plus, learning French at a young age gave me something that I knew better than my Anglophone parents, and could correct them on!

2. Please describe your current work/studies.

I am completing my Ph.D at Harvard in experimental condensed matter physics. I study the electronic properties of materials on the atomic scale with

scanning tunneling microscopy, which uses the current of electrons “tunneling” into a very finely pointed, needle-like tip to image surfaces with atomic resolution (we “see” atoms!). Currently, I am working on high temperature superconductors, materials which conduct electricity with no resistance.

I loved the French math classes, where we were challenged with problems that were expected to be difficult to solve.

Having experienced the excitement of learning geometry, doing proofs, and having creative projects built into math class helped to solidify my interest in math at an early age.

Of course, I remember the field trips and special events, but it was events in the classroom that made the day more interesting, and gave all us students something to talk about.

Being at EB comes with benefits and challenges. My parents couldn’t help me with some of my French homework, and the standards and expectations held by the French teachers are different from the American ones.

I left EB with a “French connection,” which I think is best compared to what is experienced by those who grow up in the U.S. with French parents. The French teachers and staff were excited to share their culture with all the kids—we had crêpes and Nutella, used French products, etc… My family also got to know a lot of the French staff and families from the school, so that we really felt a part of the Bay Area’s French community. I learned that there were different sets of etiquette, senses of humor, foods, etc… among French and American gatherings. I felt a part of each, and could switch between the two, and still do today.

I think it is also worth emphasizing that while at EB, you are following two curricula, French and English, simultaneously. This can be challenging, exciting, frustrating and eye-opening, but is an essential part of the EB experience.

3. How do you feel EB has influenced you or led you towards your choice of profession?

1. What did you enjoy most about your time at EB? I most enjoyed learning another language and developing a strong appreciation for French culture, history, literature and more. Many of my friends were French and I’ve been fortunate enough to travel to France several times— it’s been so special to feel at home and to be able to interact and engage with others while I travel. I also loved learning multiple subjects in both English and French.

A friend of mine once told me that you are worth as many people as the languages you speak. I feel lucky to be multilingual, multicultural and in his words, more than one person.

2. Please describe your current work.

I currently work as the Assistant Director of Compliance for UC Berkeley’s Intercollegiate Athletics Department. In this job I’ll be assisting with the development and implementation of our NCAA Rules Education program as well as in providing interpretations of these rules to athletics coaches and staff. I’ll also be helping with the department’s monitoring efforts and outbound

EB has influenced my education and my career orientation and future plans. EB taught me that a diverse, multilingual and rich education opens doors that may never be open otherwise. I do not think I would have learned Latin, French, History and Geography, U.S. History, Geometry and Algebra and more all at once at any other middle school. The variety of classes we were exposed to at EB taught me that it is important to curate my own education.

I carried this mindset with me into high school, college and beyond. EB exposed me to a culture different to my own at a young age. This experience added to my interest in international relations and economic development while also inspiring me to live and study abroad.

I am in the process of applying to law school and hope to study international law; I am sure I will use my French during my career!

4. What would you say to parents just starting out at EB? I would tell parents that they are investing in their child’s future and personal development. One day, their child will thank them for choosing to invest in their education in this way—no matter their financial resources.

It’s also important that we commit as a society to international understanding and tolerance. The more children are exposed to cultures and languages different from their own, the more they will celebrate the diversity that makes

our world so special. We need more schools like EB that will help our children become informed, caring and compassionate global citizens and stewards of this planet.

5. Describe your favorite memory from EB. I loved my time at EB. I have many funny memories. Some of my best memories came from the different trips we took beginning in third grade.

These trips helped teach me about independence and resilience. They also helped develop my wanderlust and love for nature. My favorite trips were the trips we took to Yosemite and France in seventh and eighth grade.

6. Do you feel that EB adequately prepared you for life after EB and in the world?

I have been blessed with an extraordinary education. I went to EB, Berkeley High School, the United World College of the Atlantic, Amherst College and Cal. And my education isn’t done!

EB taught me another language. It taught me discipline, attention to detail, organizational skills, leadership and so much more. Most importantly, EB was the catalyst to me becoming a citizen of the world. Following my eight years at EB I have taken every opportunity possible to learn more about my country, the world and how I can be of service to my immediate community and beyond.

7. Anything else you’d like to add?

I am so proud to be a jaguar and to be an alumna of EB. I am deeply grateful for the lessons I learned, the friends I made, and the teachers I learned from during those formative years of my life.

Alumni Profile: Andrew Shreyer, Class of 2006

I recently finished working for Hillary Clinton on her presidential campaign.

There, I was the Operations and Systems Manager focused on our financial operations, implementation of our financial software and databases, and planned our debt elimination strategy.

I recently started a new job as Field Operations Manager for a healthcare marketing company, Mesmerize Marketing. There, I strategically plan media placements in doctors’ offices and pharmacies, advise our CEO on future market opportunities, and design the logistical components of our media plans.

3. How do you feel EB has influenced you or led you towards your choice of profession?

1. What did you enjoy most about your time at EB and why?

What I enjoyed most about EB was the faculty—everyone cared so much about the work that I was doing; it really felt like a partnership. I remember a number of my classes very fondly, especially my Histoire-Géo ones, which were always full of excitement. The care that the teachers had for their students is something that influenced my high school decision and then my college decision. I now even think about it when I am choosing a job.

2. Please describe your current work.

Almost two years ago, I founded a non-profit that brings joy, hope, and pain relief to in-patient children called Pierre’s Birthday Fund. Today, we are operating at UCSF Oakland and Mission Bay by celebrating kids’ birthdays, providing massage and art therapy; we just launched a new resilience-based bead-making therapy program, and are participating in a pediatric oncology acupressure study.

I think that EB helped ignite the fire within me for making positive change in the world. When I look for new jobs, I always look for something that is mission-focused, something impactful, and something innovative, all of which EB had. I think that EB did a great job of charging its students with the idea of improving their community and making the world a better place. This idea is at the cornerstone of why I founded Pierre’s Birthday Fund when my little brother passed away.

4. What would you say to parents just starting out at EB? Welcome to one of the greatest and most tight-knit communities of the East Bay. EB is a place where families come together to create a larger, more cohesive family, representative of so many varying backgrounds.

It’s a place where your children will grow immensely, and learn a second language along the way. You’ve made a good choice.

5. Describe your favorite memory from EB. My favorite memory from EB is the annual Halloween parade. It was so fun to see the entire school, PK through 8th grade, come together for the same occasion. Everyone had huge grins on their faces and the costumes were so fun. While I was school president, I dressed up as Napoléon, but don’t worry, we didn’t have similar leadership styles. Another year, my brother and I dressed up as Astérix and Obélix.

I definitely had a great time with Halloween every year at EB. 6. Do you feel that EB adequately prepared you for life after EB? Do you feel you are a citizen of the world?

I think that EB definitely prepared me for life afterward, in high school and beyond. At EB, I learned some of the studying techniques that were useful to me during the rest of my studies. EB also gave me lifelong friends with whom I got to go through life (and still do). I try to learn as much as I can about other cultures; being exposed to the French culture definitely had something to do with that.

7. Would you consider sending your children to EB? Why? If I were to relocate to the Bay Area, I would definitely send my hypothetical children to EB—no doubt about it! It’s the best place in the East Bay to get a quality bilingual education and I know that my kids would thank me for it in the end—I know I do.

Alumni Come Together at Our Annual Reunions

EB alumni are special. They’re confident, wellspoken, interested in a myriad number of things, and at home in many different parts of the country and the world. They also tend to form close bonds with their classmates, and relish an opportunity to see them again. They did just that as they attended EB’s alumni reunions.

New York Reunion (October 2016) We hosted our first east coast reunion in New York City last October. These current east coasters may be far away geographically, but they’re still connected to EB and loved having the chance to get together. We hope this will become a yearly tradition!

18+ Alumni Reunion (December 2016) This past holiday season, we hosted our 18 and over (formerly 21 and over) reunion at EB parent Sarah Nasgovitz’s Berkeley restaurant, Stella Nonna. Over 30 alumni, ranging from the class of 2012 all the way back to 1986, as well as alumni parents and a few teachers, came to reconnect, share memories and find out what everyone was up to. It was inspiring to see the many fields our alumni are working in: from finance to teaching to non-profit work to filmmaking, our alumni are making a difference in their communities and finding out what they love to do!

EB Alumni Reunion (January 2017) Our annual holiday reunion is geared towards our high school graduates. They come back to EB’s MultiPurpose Room to see each other, check in with their teachers, relive their Middle School years via their memory boards and photos, and eat galettes des rois of course! Alumni parents are also always invited and love to see how our alumni have grown since leaving EB. It’s always a wonderful night and this year was no exception!

High School Seniors’ Reunion (May 2017) Every Memorial Day weekend, the Alumni Committee helps organize a reunion for graduating seniors, before they scatter across the country (or the globe) and head off to college and other adventures.

This year’s class was especially thankful to see each other all together once more; we wish them luck on their future exploits! (see photo page 17)

EB is fortunate to have an Alumni Committee that is dedicated to staying in touch and supporting EB’s mission. Comprised of alumni parents, the Alumni Committee meets regularly with the Development Office to support the school’s activities and help organize certain events. Popular alumni volunteer traditions include a highschool focused alumni reunion, as well as an 18 and over reunion; an 8th Grade Parents’ Tribute to honor departing 8th grade families and welcome them into the alumni community; a BBQ for graduating high school seniors; and volunteering for the 8th grade graduation dinner.

Thank You to Our Former Head, Frédéric Canadas

laptop program in our Middle School. In 2006, EB became the first Middle School in the Bay Area with such a program. He also championed the use of interactive whiteboards and pushed forward an iPad program for students from kindergarten to fifth grade. Today, we are proud that each one of our Elementary and Middle School students and teachers have access to cutting edge technology. Our ten years of experience with these learning tools have empowered our students and teachers, and helped set EB as a leader in educating skilled and responsible technology users.

Starting in 2002 as our 6th Head of School, Frédéric strongly believed in EB’s mission statement and in the duty of education to allow students to develop to their full potential. Frédéric’s vision, his passion for bilingualism, and his tireless energy have had a lasting impact on EB. Frédéric worked diligently at making EB known for its excellent bilingual program. Early in his tenure, he spearheaded the update of EB’s identity to accurately reflect the strength of the EB program. Frédéric continuously worked to strengthen our bilingual program, implementing several curriculum improvements, and encouraging teachers to provide differentiated instruction. He understood that in order to empower our diverse student body and give it the tools to succeed, EB had to be particularly attentive to its physical environment and to the unique social, emotional, and academic needs of its students.

Frédéric gave our students the tools needed to think critically and thrive in a modern world. Aspiring to place EB at the forefront of 21st century education, Frédéric shepherded the one-to-one

Frédéric recognized that for EB to thrive, academic excellence would need to go hand in hand with educational accessibility and financial sustainability.

To make an EB education more affordable to a diverse community with a wide range of socioeconomic backgrounds, Frédéric worked on reforming our Financial Aid program and on increasing Financial Assistance in general.

One of Frédéric’s biggest legacies will be his leadership in the 2009–2014 Campus Campaign. Working in close partnership with the Board, Frédéric oversaw the securing and expansion of EB’s facilities. In 2009, through careful planning and solid financial stewardship of the Board and the administration, EB was able to purchase its Lower School campus after 30 years of existence. Just the following year, in 2010, EB followed up by acquiring its Middle School campus. In 2013, Frédéric participated in the negotiation of the purchase of the adjacent property allowing for the expansion and transformation of our Lower School. By 2015, our Lower School garden and playground had been entirely remodeled and significantly expanded, to create an innovative Outdoor Learning Environment.

For 15 years, Frédéric worked to integrate EB in the network of French international schools, as well as promote the school as a leader in its field. He strived to establish a strong, collaborative relationship with the French Consulate and with the Association of French Schools in North America (AFSA). In 2012, he became the President of AFSA. Frédéric also collaborated closely with the Service des Établissements Scolaires (SES), an administrative structure within the French Embassy, aiming to support North American schools with a French program. He served on the SES’s professional development steering committee for many years, and, alongside the French Inspector, he led a number of workshops on the best practices in bilingualism. Frédéric eventually became a Trustee of the Society of French Schools in North America (FISNA), leading its marketing committee’s efforts to develop a new branding identity for its member schools, including the launch of a new website (www.fisna.org).

As a leader, Frédéric showed remarkable dedication to the school and to its mission. We are truly thankful to Frédéric for his many contributions and accomplishments as EB’s Head of School. We wish him the very best with his next endeavors!

EB Says Goodbye

Nadine Morrisette Nadine has been part of the EB community for 26 years, first as a Kindergarten teacher, then as a second grade teacher, and finally as part of our third grade team since 1998, in addition to a French Coordinator position. During the 1990s, she also spent three years teaching an adult French class to EB parents!

ALUMNI

Nadine is a born teacher who has kept the joy of instruction fresh throughout her many years in the classroom. Beyond the work that she has done with her third graders, Nadine has also been our “soutien,” or support teacher, and in this capacity she has helped many students to better understand the intricacies of the French phonetic system and the “dreaded” French conjugation, among other academic skills.

Nadine is beloved by her students, who have all benefitted from her structured yet extremely nurturing approach, and who will surely remember her way of balancing high expectations with endearments and encouragements.

Nadine, we wish you a well-deserved retirement and all the best to you. Whether in the U.S. sipping a Cabernet or in France savoring a fine Burgundy, her native region, be sure to keep sharing your infectious laugh with your friends and loved ones. We will cherish our fond memories of the many years that we shared.

Dominique has been our Acting Head for the 2016–2017 school year. She came to EB during one of the rainiest years on record in California, but kept our spirits high. Dominique is passionate about education and shared with us her deep convictions for a child-centered and project-based approach. She brought a fresh look and valuable suggestions for our program and operations at EB. We have all benefitted from her great understanding of people and her ability to think outside the box. Dominique is a lifelong learner who, besides leading EB, has been working on attaining a Master’s degree in Educational Leadership.

Dominique, we wish you the best in your new role as Head of the American English Academy in Sofia, Bulgaria.

Finance Message Nick Waugh Treasurer

The Finance Committee works diligently every year to strengthen EB’s finances, balancing several often competing priorities. As always, the Board’s 2016–2017 financial goals revolved around keeping EB financially stable and accessible by 1) limiting tuition increases to less than 5% a year and maintaining a robust financial aid program; 2) managing expenses to reflect changes in enrollment; and 3) continuing to invest in our future.

Beginning in 2016–2017, we chose to invest in the preschool to solidify our foundation. This included opening a YPK/Toute Petite Section class, installing a Director of the Preschool, minimizing the preschool tuition increase, creating a low-cost package for Extended Day and school year camps, and adding four weeks of summer daycare in addition to the four weeks of French summer camp to increase parents’ options. These choices have had an important impact: our preschool classes are full for the 2017–2018 school year, and we have opened an additional class.

The 2016–2017 year was a challenging one, and sacrifices were made to ensure EB continued to operate effectively and sustainably. We ended the 2016–2017 year with an operating deficit of $168,000 (EB’s budget is $14.5M), which includes one-time costs associated with the hiring of an Acting Head and the search for a permanent Head. The Board adapted to the changing conditions by revising the budget twice in response to lower than anticipated enrollment (3.9% decline from 2015–2016). While conservative budgeting impacted faculty and staff, we’ve completed the year on solid ground, allowing us to look to the future with confidence.

EB’s current ratio is 1.46 as of June 30, 2017. In other words, EB’s current assets (mainly cash) were 1.5 times higher than its current liabilities (mostly tuition prepayments and vacation compensation owed to faculty and staff). Translated into dollars, EB’s current assets surpassed its current liabilities by close to $2.3M. As a point of comparison, in 2000 the current ratio was 0.73 and at that time, we did not own our facilities.

2016–2017 Revenues

In addition to careful planning and disciplined spending, we remain on solid financial footing thanks to critical fundraising revenues. We are grateful to all of you for contributing $531,703 in gifts raised through our annual giving efforts and fund development initiatives.

These non-tuition revenue sources are critical to the overall financial health of the school. They provide additional resources that help us moderate tuition increases while providing the best possible education for our students.

The Board continues to remain optimistic about EB’s future and has chosen to invest in educational programs, among other priorities, for the 2017–2018 school year. Under the leadership of our new Head, Mehdi Lazar, EB looks forward to growing our enrollment, enhancing our programs and celebrating our 40-year milestone. We thank you for placing your trust in us and for being part of this unique school and community. Your collective engagement and generosity play a major role in EB’s success, and we are grateful for your active participation.

Throughout this dynamic time, you have tirelessly organized and volunteered for community events, taking time from work and family responsibilities to coordinate classroom events, drive for field trips, and chaperone dances. Every step of the way, you have given your precious time and money to enrich our children’s education. We are so thankful to be here right now, with you.

The Annual Fund, our principal community-building program, was a tremendous success. The co-chairs, Pria Hidisyan and Hal Stevens, worked diligently all year to ensure EB secured essential funds for our children to flourish. The community-wide campaign was an intense 30-day effort, fueled by

World Celebrations, the Auction, the Marché, and the Raffle were made possible through the tireless efforts of the Event Chairs, the Parents’ Association Board, and countless parent volunteers. You did a fantastic job bringing our vibrant school culture to life and enriching our children’s experience. Thank you.

Citizenship Award The Middle School Citizenship Award was created in 2011 to honor a student or group of students for acts of leadership small or large, for inspiring others to higher levels of civic engagement, and for their commitment to building community.

The goal of this award is to encourage Middle School students to take positive action in the EB community and beyond by modeling EB values. The Middle School is pleased to announce the ‘Rights to Protect Against and Awareness of Injustice and Stereotypes Fundraising Group and Club’ (RAIS), a group made up of thirteen seventh grade students, as the recipients of this year’s award.

RAIS’s mission is to “fight stereotypes by raising awareness and to help other injustices in the world.” RAIS met weekly to discuss how they could take action in response to stereotyping comments or injustices they noticed within their own environment. Through two separate fundraisers—a dance and a bake sale—RAIS raised over $300, which they donated to the Kids in Need foundation. They were honored to receive this award: they believe strongly that it is up to them as Middle School students to fight injustice and create change and that if they continue to do so, our world will become a better place.

Through a gift of $1,000 from an anonymous alumni family to the EB Endowment fund, the Citizenship Award honors RAIS for their commitment and example this year. Congratulations!

The Silver Jubilee Endowment Fund was created in 2003 by one of EB’s founders in celebration of the school’s 25th anniversary.

In 2008, the idea of the class gift, dedicated to EB’s Endowment, was born. For the last nine years, the parents and students of the graduating class have continued this legacy, contributing generously to the EB Class Gift Endowment Fund. Every year, an alumni family offers a matching grant tied to the student fundraising. The purpose of these two funds is to provide a source of permanent financial security for EB. Most recently, in 2015, alumni parents John Rosenthal and Sally Drach established the Fund for Excellence. Allocations from this fund will support specific expenses intended to enhance the educational experience of EB students.

Delicious lemon curd, hot chocolate mixes, fun tie-dye clothing and beautiful miniature succulent gardens adorned the 8th grade table at the Marché.

Beyond these sales, students made their own financial contributions to their class gift alongside their parents’ gifts.

Thanks to the leadership, motivation, and encouragement from the Class Gift to the Endowment Co-Chairs, Jacqueline Van Lang and Laura Pantaleo, our parents and students raised a total of $10,251 for the Endowment Fund. This total gift was made possible by a generous matching gift of $1,243.50 from an alumni family. We are grateful for their continued support of the EB Endowment.

This year’s Fund for the Future portion of the Auction was dedicated to creating Dream Labs, spaces that are part maker-space part science lab, in both the Lower and Middle Schools. We envision a space where our children can bring together science, technology, engineering, art, and math, and use their two languages to explore scientific and design thinking.

Thanks to the generosity of our amazing community, $39,430 was raised to purchase the materials, equipment, and construction needed to create these these labs that will nurture hands-on, active learning, and that will allow for the seamless integration of STEAM with students of all ages.

This year, the PA, led by an immensely hard-working and dedicated team—in particular Maria Reyes, Todd Vollmerhausen, Steve Levine and Setenay BozkurtFrucht (who represented the PA at the Board level)—created some truly wonderful events and collaborated with the Administration to ensure effective and efficient planning for our upcoming 40th anniversary. From surpassing our goals in the Annual Fund to celebrating diversity during World Celebrations to a fabulous night out during the Auction and ending the year with an amazing Marché, the PA is present in every aspect of EB life and gives EB its joie de vivre!

Thank you to all of our parents for a wonderful year. From organizing major events to helping with morning carpool and volunteering in the classroom, the level of community participation at EB is truly touching. You create this wonderful community that we are grateful to be a part of. Thank you!

Ask anyone what their favorite thing about EB is and chances are they’ll tell you: it’s the community. That’s because there really is a special and unique community feeling that makes EB a one-of-a-kind place. It’s a warm, inviting, diverse group of people who make EB as special for the parents as it is for the kids. And these are the wonderful people who make up our Parents’ Association—all of you.

Spotlight on Our Departing Volunteers: Tom & Renee Cole Clyde

to help make EB the best place for their children, and all the children here at school. In their own words, Tom and Renee describe what volunteering at EB has meant to them.

1. Why was volunteering at EB important to you?

EB thrives thanks to all the overlapping and crisscrossing connections between its incredible families, teachers and administrators. We found that the more frequently we volunteered, the happier we felt walking around the EB grounds. Volunteering allowed us to be a part of what made EB special.

In her work as the Auction co-chair, as a Room Rep, as the Anglophone Co-President of the Parents’ Association and finally, as a Trustee, Renee always thought first of the good of the school.

Volunteering gave her a sense of helping EB to thrive beyond her family’s time here.

Indeed, the entire Clyde family has been a familiar presence at EB over the last ten years, both inside the classroom and out in the EB community. It’s a rare gem to find a family so enmeshed in nearly every aspect of the school and always willing to go above and beyond.

We are continuously humbled by and grateful for Tom and Renee’s incredible generosity of time, talents, energy, and gifts

As the years passed, and Renee and I generated more and more experiences with other parents and teachers at EB, we found ourselves surrounded by layers upon layers of support in this community. As our family struggled with Renee’s health issues, we were surrounded with care. Our children felt it too.

2. What is your favorite memory of your volunteering at EB? We will never forget our annual Shakescene performances; we loved the adventurous spirit of the community that came alive when Shakescene rolled around. Each year, Tom cast a mix of EB students, parents, teachers, and a handful of actors we knew from our theater years. Our friends came through every time, helping with food, programs, and so much more. We will always remember looking out on the crowd and seeing so

many beaming, familiar faces enjoying whatever delights that year’s performance held: the motley fairies of A Midsummer Night’s Dream; the rainy day performance of As You Like It; Romeo and Juliet’s tragic end among the redwoods; the spontaneous plunge into the pool that ended the Tempest; and many more.

3. How did volunteering enrich your family’s experience at EB? Volunteering enriched us in so many ways. We got to know many of the teachers, administrators, and the wonderful facilities team at EB very well through various events and activities. As a result of knowing so many people in the community, we found that we could talk openly about any concerns we had at the school, both in and out of the classroom. When you give

your heart to something it has a way of becoming part of your heart. That’s what happened to us during our 10 years at EB. Renee, far more than I, dedicated herself to the hard work of helping the school as it faces its future as an independent school. I watched as, day after day, she composed emails and pored over documents, attended meetings and events. Being a part of a unified and productive Board of Trustees allowed Renee truly to understand and impact the inner workings of EB. 4. What would you say to new parents who are considering volunteering at EB?

Don’t even hesitate to think about it! Just do it. Contribute what you love and do anyway, get roped in, rope people in, plan an event of your own, say ‘YES’! Be a room rep, join the Parents’ Association, join the Board of Trustees. EB needs you. Your friends need you.

5. What would you say about your years at EB as a family? What will you miss most about EB? Our years at EB were truly magical. Each of our three children started in PK, and we watched as, to our amazement, all of our babies learned to speak accent-free French! We watched also as they learned so much about the countries of origin of their friends around the world and as they learned not to take anything “American” for granted, but to see it through a prism of difference and respect for other ways never even considered before.

EB expanded our children’s minds and ours too. Ten years later I feel even more open, more curious, about the world, having been a parent at EB. I want to know not just the catch-phrases and exotic dishes and styles of music of countries around the world, but something deeper: what it’s like, truly, to care about someone from that country. What it’s like to see the world through their eyes. That’s what we learned at EB: How to love globally.

This is the gift that EB gave our children and our family. We are all open and available to the world now in a way we hadn’t known before our time here.

And I have a feeling that it’s for life. Thank you.

Spotlight on Our Departing Volunteers: Jacqueline Van Lang

Jacqueline Van Lang

Some people make a difference wherever they go.

Jacqueline Van Lang is one of those people. From the moment her family joined EB, she has been an involved and engaged parent and volunteer, joining in to plan events, fundraise, and create new opportunities for parents and students.

She’s held nearly every volunteer position there is, often in a leadership role: PA President, Marché Co-Chair, World Celebrations Co-Chair, Co-Chair of the Class Gift to the Endowment, Board member, including Chair of the Marketing Committee, Annual Fund volunteer, project leader for EB Spirit Wear and EB Scrip, member of the Auction Committee, Beaujolais Committee, Alumni Committee, and generous host for many EB events.

As I started to volunteer, I embraced the concept that we can all contribute, having different talents and skills. It was rewarding to see that you could make a difference to better the very place where your children were spending an enormous amount of time. Through volunteering I realized what it means to truly be part of a community: to participate and be engaged.

Plus, making new friends was super fun! I never really understood the adage “the more you give, the more you get” until I volunteered at EB. It is a lesson that I appreciate so much and I have tried to apply it to other aspects of my life, including the most important part: raising my children.

2. What was your favorite role or volunteer opportunity that you took on at EB? There were so many joyous and fun projects. My favorite role was chairing the G8 Endowment with Laura Clydesdale in 2015. We worked directly with the kids, getting them involved

3. How did volunteering enrich your family’s experience at EB? The common experience of being at school and working there brought our family closer together through shared memories. I was also glad to serve as a role model for our children, proving that great things can be accomplished when you are dedicated. They could see concrete results from the EB Spirit Wear clothing we designed, the posters we made, and the events that we organized. Having a parent involved in these activities, the children are exposed to another facet of their environment that they might not have otherwise noticed— observing firsthand the inner workings of the school helps them appreciate all that a functioning organization entails.

4. What would you say about your years at EB as a family? What will you miss most?

I cannot give our children my own perspective of being a foreigner, as an immigrant. EB exposed them to other cultures through an extraordinarily diverse community. They received a global outlook and we bridged our two different circumstances. I will miss this incredible community that was such an enriching daily experience for my children.

EB is unique and its rich culture cannot be replicated in other schools, however prestigious they may be. It was deeply moving to watch the memory movie at each of my children’s graduations.

It makes me wish I had volunteered even more so that I could witness more of their youth!

1. Why was volunteering at EB important to you?

and organizing their efforts in raising funds for their own legacy. We got a dose of wild teenage enthusiasm and chaos that makes you feel great hope for the world.

This particular class was also very special. To see them come together so united in their efforts, so supportive of one another, so willing to cooperate, and so enthusiastic in reaching our goal for the largest class gift, was inspiring. Seeing their happy faces and glee throughout the whole process was the most rewarding.

Thank you to our numerous room reps who enrich our students’ experience every day!

Every day at EB is a new adventure for our students. Whether they’re learning about new cultures, studying biology in the garden, or exploring water facilities at EBMUD, they’re only able to do all of this thanks to the work of some incredible parent volunteers: our Room Reps.

We know how much time you spend sending emails and helping to coordinate field trips, carpool, lice checks, teacher appreciation... and the list just goes on. Thank you for your dedication to your classes and to EB; we appreciate each and every one of you!

In Memoriam

Bette Kroening, the smiling co-founder of Bette’s Oceanview Diner in Berkeley, food pioneer and cookbook author, and mom to EB alum Lucie (class of 1999), died on Thursday Feb. 16, 2017 from cancer. She was 71.

Bette Kroening Oct. 15, 1945 – Feb. 16, 2017

Bette will be remembered for her kindness and empathy, her ability to listen and connect, and her endless appetite for reading, learning, languages and lively conversation. When it came to food, she was unapologetically opinionated—and generally correct. That integrity inspired a generation of cooks, staff, and friends.

Bette Kroening is survived by her husband, Manfred Kroening; her daughter, Lucie Kroening; a nephew Steven Caminez, his wife Yanyan Caminez, and their son Jonathan of Fremont; a niece, April Bentley, her husband Jim, and their children Emma and Christian of Tallahassee, Florida.

She will be missed.

Hubert Lederer Dreyfus, a preeminent scholar of 20th century European philosophy, early skeptic of artificial intelligence, iTunes podcast star, UC Berkeley professor emeritus of philosophy and EB alumni parent to Gabrielle (class of 1993) and Stéphane (class of 1987), died at his home in Berkeley on April 22, 2017 from cancer. He was 87.

Hubert Dreyfus Oct. 15, 1930 – Apr. 22, 2017

A prolific Harvard-educated philosopher, Dreyfus taught at UC Berkeley for nearly 50 years.

While Dreyfus—known to his family and friends as Bert—retired in 1994, he remained active as a professor in the Graduate School, teaching philosophy until his last day of class on December 3, 2016. “He was a completely genuine, honest intellectual and philosopher who cared about thinking, even if it made him seem strange.” said Kaplan, who studied under Dreyfus in the 90s.

He is survived by his wife, Geneviève Boissier Dreyfus, of Berkeley, son Stéphane Dreyfus and daughter-in-law Jessica Kung Dreyfus, of San Francisco; daughter Gabrielle Dreyfus and son-inlaw Benjamin Phillips, of Washington, DC; and his brother Stuart Dreyfus, of Berkeley.

John Vincent Murray July 7, 1955 – Dec. 12, 2016

She is survived by her husband William S. Lowery, children Marieta Easley, Natasha and Will Lowery, and her three granddaughters America, Sequoia and Phoenix Easley, of Sandy, Oregon.

John Vincent Murray, passed away on December 12, 2016, in Albany, California, at the age of 61. He was a devoted father to EB alumni Thomas (class of 2007) and Daniel (class of 2013), and a loving husband to Mariela Moreno.

John loved reading all subjects and learning languages. He enjoyed music, travel, fishing and camping road-trips with his two sons to places like the Grand Canyon, Death Valley, and Baja.

He was compassionate and observant. He put everyone at ease and left them feeling better about themselves. He enjoyed motocross as a young adult and was a model train hobbyist with his children. He had a gentle but perceptive sense of humor and a profound love for his family.

All who knew John are grateful for the many ways he enriched our lives.

Pauletta Chanco Lowery Apr. 6, 1957 – Jun. 4, 2017

Pauletta Chanco-Lowery, EB alumni parent, died on June 4, 2017, surrounded by her husband of 23 years, William S. Lowery, and her beloved children Marieta Easley, Natasha Lowery (class of 2008), and Will Lowery (class of 2010). Pauletta was a well established Oakland abstract painter, printmaker an installationist, with Bachelor and Masters’ degrees from UC Berkeley. Her extensive selection of work and her biography can be found at her official website: www.paulettachanco.com. She will be fondly remembered for her contributions in the art world, her deep Buddhist practice and her loving presence as a mother and grandmother.
