Message from the Head of School
Dear EB Community, What a remarkable 12 months since our last Annual Report! With the Campus Campaign behind us and the new and expanded Outdoor Learning Environment complete, 2014–2015 was a year of REFLECTION and INNOVATION. From the first day of school until graduation, we embraced the opportunity to review and refine our program offerings and our approach to teaching so that we could best meet the needs of current and future students.
“Diversity and
inclusion are EB founding pillars and are a highlight of our current Strategic Plan.” This year marked the commencement of our STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) initiative. Our grade 3–5 teachers took on the responsibility of teaching science and art, and made changes in how they taught various subject matters. We provided experts in the field to help and guide them through this process. We witnessed some exciting moments in the classroom and look forward to the continued development of this initiative.

While the initial focus was on our Lower School curricula and instruction, our Middle School faculty and students embraced experiential cross-disciplinary learning as well and hosted their first ever Maker Faire. Makers from outside the EB community came together with our own “makers” (students, parents, and teachers), to celebrate a day of learning through creative tinkering and discovery. Soon, STEAM will be an everyday experience for all our students. Diversity and inclusion are EB founding pillars and a highlight of our current Strategic Plan. We are a multicultural school and ongoing diversity work is essential. In the fall, we welcomed Dereca Blackmon, an expert facilitator from Stanford’s Diversity Office, to engage our faculty and parents in workshop-setting dialogue on equity, inclusion and justice. Lessons learned proved valuable in the classroom and around the dinner table—demonstrating the importance of offering both faculty and parent education. As always, EB’s continued pursuit of excellence depends on the quality and commitment of our faculty. We are fortunate to have a dedicated, smart and resourceful staff and our long-term goal is to provide funds for 100 percent of our faculty to participate in a workshop, class or conference each year. This year, the annual Auction’s Fund-a-Need was earmarked for this purpose. These additional funds combined with the annual professional development budget will help us reach this goal.
And of course, no year-in-review would be complete without recognizing the amazing accomplishments of our students as evidenced by our newest alumni, the Class of 2015, and our college-bound alumni, the class of 2011. We are so proud of who they have become and where they are headed, and wish them the best of luck. (For more details about their respective destinations, see page 14.) Our commitment to REFLECTION and INNOVATION helped guide our path forward this year. We hope to build on this momentum as we respond to the ever-changing world in which our students live. Thank you for joining EB in its journey as supporters, participants and philanthropists. Douze mois remarquables se sont écoulés depuis notre dernier Rapport Annuel ! La levée de fonds du Campus et notre nouvel espace en plein air sont terminés, plaçant l’année scolaire 2014–2015 sous le double signe de la RÉFLEXION et de l’INNOVATION. Du premier jour d’école à la remise des diplômes aux élèves de quatrième en fin d’année, nous avons travaillé à redéfinir nos programmes et notre approche de l’enseignement afin de mieux répondre aux besoins de nos élèves et de ceux qui les suivront.

La recherche de l’excellence académique à EB repose sur la qualité et l’implication de nos professeurs dévoués et inventifs. Notre objectif à long terme est de permettre à chacun d’entre eux de participer, chaque année, à un atelier, une formation ou à une conférence. Une partie des fonds levés à la dernière Vente aux Enchères Annuelle, ajoutée au budget annuel de formation continue, va nous aider à financer et à atteindre cet objectif.
Cette année a vu naître le projet STEAM (Sciences, Technologie, Ingénierie, Art et Mathématiques). Les professeurs du CE2 au CM2, avec l’aide d’experts, ont pris en charge l’enseignement des sciences et des arts, et ont ainsi changé leur façon d’aborder certains points du programme, offrant à leurs classes des moments exceptionnels qui nous ont convaincus d’étendre cette expérience. Les enseignants et les élèves du collège ont eux aussi mis en place des projets transdisciplinaires. Ils ont organisé leur première « Maker Faire » (Foire des créateurs) : des créateurs extérieurs à la communauté d’EB ont rencontré nos propres “créateurs” (élèves, parents et professeurs). Cette journée festive a mis à l’honneur l’école du bricolage créatif et de la découverte. Bientôt STEAM fera partie du quotidien de tous nos élèves.
Bien entendu, ce bilan annuel ne serait pas complet s’il ne mentionnait pas les étonnantes performances de nos élèves de la promotion 2015 (entrant au lycée) et de la promotion de 2011, qui entrent cette année à l’université. Nous sommes très fiers de ce qu’ils sont devenus et nous leur souhaitons bonne chance. (Pour davantage d’informations sur leurs parcours, voir page 14.)
Accueillir et intégrer des familles diverses représente un principe fondamental d’EB et reste au cœur de sa stratégie de développement. En tant qu’école multiculturelle, EB veut conserver sa diversité. Message from the Chair of the Board
Dear EB Community, It is with gratitude that I write to thank you for your support and belief in EB’s enduring mission. It has been an honor to help steward the school this past year in my role as Board Chair. Early on in the year, the board formed a Core Values Task Force to begin work on reviewing EB’s mission and vision, an invaluable process that schools undertake at the onset of strategic planning. The school’s work in this area will continue and will include community feedback throughout the 2015–2016 school year. Through this process, EB will fine-tune its guiding principles thus providing a foundation for the future. The board continued its ongoing work overseeing the school’s finances. EB remains financially solid through the administration’s careful management of funds derived from tuition and the ongoing contributions from the community. We continue to work towards financial sustainability while ensuring an economically diverse community. (You can read more about the school’s finances on page 24.) As we look ahead to 2015–2016 and my departure from the Board, I’d like to welcome our incoming Board Chair, Emma Shepherdson Gimon. Emma’s experience as a trustee and her collaborative approach make her

well equipped to lead EB forward. I’d also like to thank our outgoing trustees, Nadine Amarelo, Philippe Dietz, Mark Poff, Kili McGowan and Peter Secor, as well as our faculty on the Board, Marion Tobie, Ariel Wittman and Suzanne Wallace, for sharing their talent, time and resources with the school. As Board Chair it has been a pleasure working alongside our Head of School, Frédéric Canadas. His compassion, dedication and vision guide the school and I will miss our partnership. And of course I’d like to thank EB’s amazing faculty. Their commitment to our students is unwavering. As an EB alumnus, it is heartwarming to see that the value of a bilingual and multicultural education continues to grow and that EB graduates are going out into the world and making a difference. (See page 14 to learn more about what our alumni are up to). Thank you for being part of the EB community and sharing in the school’s many accomplishments.
John Palmer, Class of 1988 Board Chair (2014–2015)
Incoming Trustees Camille ServanSchreiber joined the Board in August 2015 as the Parents’ Association Francophone Co-President. Camille was born and raised in France before moving to California to pursue her graduate studies. Camille is an award winning independent documentary filmmaker who has traveled the world producing films. She founded a production company, Bread and Butter Films, with her husband Jason Cohn. She holds a Masters in History from the University of Paris X, Nanterre and an MA in Journalism from UC Berkeley. Camille and Jason live in Berkeley with their two boys Theo (G5) and Zach (G2). Michael Pincus served for six years (2002–2008) on the EB Board. We are delighted to have him back on board as of July 2015. Michael has worked in education in South Africa, Australia, and the US since 1972. In this capacity, he has taught and been a school administrator. He gained his B.A. and B.A. (Honours) degrees—the latter is equivalent to an M.A.—at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, South Africa, majoring in English and history. His post-graduate work was done in history with a focus on the emergence of separate development in the urban areas of South Africa. There he also gained his teaching credential. From July 2000 to present, he was Assistant Head and Continuing Head of the Upper School (fourth through eighth grade) at Saint Mark’s School in San Rafael.

Je vous remercie chaleureusement du soutien et de la confiance que vous accordez à EB. En tant que Président du Conseil d’Administration, j’ai été honoré de pouvoir contribuer au fonctionnement de l’école durant l’année scolaire 2014–2015. En début d’année, un groupe de travail a réfléchi sur le plan stratégique d’EB et ses valeurs fondamentales. Chaque école s’engage régulièrement dans cette procédure essentielle. En 2015–2016, EB poursuivra cette démarche en élargissant sa réflexion à la communauté de l’école. Ainsi, nous pourrons ajuster nos principes de fonctionnement et poser les bases de notre développement futur. Le Conseil d’Administration veille sur les finances de l’école : elles demeurent solides grâce à une gestion scrupuleuse des fonds provenant des frais de scolarité et des dons réguliers de la communauté. Atteindre la viabilité financière en gardant une communauté où toutes les catégories socio-économiques sont représentées reste l’objectif visé. (Pour en savoir plus sur les finances de l’école, voir page 24) À la veille de la rentrée 2015–2016 et de mon départ du Conseil d’administration, je souhaite la bienvenue à notre nouvelle Présidente, Emma Shepherdson Gimon. Son expérience du Conseil d’Administration et son approche collaborative font d’elle la candidate idéale pour faire avancer
EB. Je voudrais aussi remercier les membres du Conseil qui nous quittent : Nadine Amarelo, Philippe Dietz, Mark Poff, Kili McGowan et Peter Secor, ainsi que nos enseignants participants au CA, Marion Tobie, Suzanne Wallace et Ariel Wittman : tous ont partagé leurs talents, leur temps et leurs ressources. En tant que Président du Conseil d’Administration, j’ai eu beaucoup de plaisir à travailler avec notre Chef d’établissement, Frédéric Canadas. Son empathie, son dévouement et sa vision guident l’école ; notre collaboration va me manquer. Permettez-moi de saluer aussi le dévouement constant des enseignants envers leurs élèves. En tant qu’ancien élève d’EB, je suis heureux de constater que l’éducation bilingue et multiculturelle est de plus en plus valorisée et que les diplômés d’EB deviennent des citoyens actifs dans le monde. John Palmer, promotion 1988 Président du Conseil d’Administration (2014–2015)
Incoming Trustees Bénédicte Cambon joined the Board in September 2015 as the French Faculty Participant. Bénédicte holds a State Diploma in Psychometrics. She worked as an occupational therapist in a special needs school (motor and sensory disabilities, dysphasia). Then Bénédicte obtained her teaching credentials and taught for several years in France before being hired at EB in 1997 where she taught mostly first grade. Since 2007 Bénédicte has been part of the G1-G2 “looping” team teaching first grade one year and second grade the year after in order to follow the students. Bénédicte and her husband Mark have two daughters at EB: Clarisse (G5) and Amélie (G7).
Elaine Wang joined the Board in September 2015 as the English Faculty Participant. Elaine has a B.A. in East Asian Studies from UC Berkeley. She obtained her Multiple-Subject K–12 Teaching Credentials from San Francisco State University, CA. Before joining EB in 2010, Elaine taught for many years in different schools in Oakland and El Cerrito. Elaine taught third grade for four years at EB and is now teaching fourth grade. Elaine and her husband Todd have four children, one of whom is at EB: Kaiel (G4).

Our Mission
Ecole Bilingue de Berkeley educates a diverse population of boys and girls, inspiring them to strive for academic excellence and to develop a high sense of personal and social responsibility. We offer a challenging and rigorous course of study in both French and English, set in a multicultural environment. A Year in Review
A Day of Service in Honor of MLK Jr.
Martin Luther King Jr. Day offers a great chance to teach our children about diversity, community service, and social justice. This year, an enthusiastic group of EB students and parents turned up in San Francisco to join hundreds of celebrants in honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in the MLK parade. EB students—from PK to Middle School—honored Dr. King with a 1.5 mile march through downtown San Francisco.

Simultaneously, over 60 EB parents, students, faculty, and administrators came together for a day of community service. The EB community showed up in force at the Martin Luther King Jr. Regional Shoreline in Oakland to help with a clean up. An estimated 100 bags of trash were removed from the shoreline by the EB gang, who also helped with landscaping and planting along the shoreline. The day of service culminated a month of activities at EB focusing on diversity and inclusion with diversity workshops
for parents, faculty and staff, as well as age-appropriate education for students in the Maternelle, Lower, and Middle schools. We anticipate that this MLK day of service will become an annual tradition! Diversity and Inclusion
EB’s commitment to continuing its diversity education was exemplified by the numerous events organized by the PA and administration this year. EB hosted Dereca Blackmon, an expert on issues of diversity, inclusion, inequality, and social justice, for several lectures and workshops. Parents, teachers and staff, as well as students benefitted from workshops and discussions about how to deal with differences, the role of social media in this context, and how to have conversations with our families about the complexities of the current world we live in.
Faculty Professional Development
This year, 25 teachers benefitted from professional development training on a variety of topics ranging from Visible Thinking to reading institutes to dyslexia training. Here is what Mathieu Cladidier, Middle School French and Latin teacher, had to say about his experience: “Learning about design thinking allows me to help my students tackle problems using a concrete and comprehensive process.”
A Visit from Christian Voltz
EB welcomed visiting French author Christian Voltz, well known for his whimsical books where the illustrations are made up of arrangements of found objects. During his week-long visit,

Congratulations to our after-school sports teams, the Jaguars, for continuing the EB traditions of fun, sportsmanship, and victory! This year, both the Jaguars’ basketball and football teams went undefeated to clinch the championships. Thanks to Coach Rodriguez for more than 24 years of great coaching and 46 championships total!
Voltz facilitated workshops with students, met with teachers to discuss his background and work process, signed books for parents and children, and participated in memorable classroom activities. Merci M. Voltz !

Rallye Maths
Crystal Science Project
Teachers, teacher assistants and the Extended Day team spent a full day last summer in an inspiring training with Playworks, a national organization based in Oakland that helps schools improve the playground experience for all children. During the training, faculty and staff learned a variety of new games, all without winners or losers, but rather featuring a constant stream of participants. They also discussed the importance of building a rapport with students, establishing consistent rules and consequences, and teaching to all styles. EB views the playground as an integral part of the educational experience and a continuation of the classroom, with opportunities for rich interactions, important experiences, and valuable and unique teaching moments.
EB celebrated “La semaine des Mathématiques” (Math week) in France by participating in a nationwide math competition: “Le Rallye Mathématiques.” Pairs comprised of one fifth grader and one sixth grader worked together to solve online mental math games, with several of our pairs receiving “Certificates of Excellence” for high scores! Students agreed that mental math was a lot more fun when done with a partner and greatly appreciated each other’s help.
Fifth and seventh grade students spent several weeks working on a joint project about crystals, based on one created specifically for French schools in North America. The final objective of the project was for the students to grow crystals, using a variety of materials and a progression of experiments. In addition to discovering the aesthetic and various formations of the crystals, this project allowed students to tackle the notion of scientific processes, understand how to conduct a lab and use scientific materials, learn a new scientific vocabulary, and utilize their observation and reasoning skills. After creating solutions and observing their crystals’ shapes with microscopes— using geometry to compare and contrast their varying configurations—the students finished the project by observing the different steps of growth and sharing pictures taken with a USB microscope with other North American schools also involved in the project.
Maker Faire: A New Tradition
EB’s first Maker Faire was a treasure-trove of creativity and discovery, featuring makers from the outside—including Rogue Maker, Kinetic Steamworks Collective, Kids n’clay—as well as students, parents, and
teachers from within the EB community. Students enjoyed a plethora of activities and entertainment, including kinetic arts sculpture, 3-D printers, paper rockets, drones, felting, soldering, gardening, stop motion animation, and more. There was even a perfectly recreated Back to the Future DeLorean!

Beyond the Classroom: Annual EB Overnight Trips

Coloma
Our fourth graders spend three days at the site where gold was first discovered in California, learning about the Gold Rush, native peoples, and the ecosystem of the Sierra foothills.
France
Every year our fifth graders head off to France to enjoy their first international EB trip. With a 30year history, this trip has become one of the defining points of many students’ EB education. The students visit museums, monuments, parks, and live with host families.

3 Marin Headlands

For their first EB overnight trip, our third graders head to the Marin Headlands to study its unique ecosystems and explore the flora and fauna specific to the area. The students do a lot of hiking and direct observation of plants and animals, both in the wild and in a marine lab. Teambuilding activities round out the trip, a favorite for students and parents alike!

Our new Middle Schoolers head out to the Catalina Island Marine Institute for a five-day science-filled adventure of camping, exploring, and outdoor education. The educational topics covered are numerous, as are the many activities available, including kayaking, snorkeling, a ropes course challenge, and much more!

The eighth grade classes head back to France for two weeks of in-depth linguistic and cultural experiences. As more mature young adults, many students enjoy this second chance to visit France as a group, learning and bonding anew during their last EB trip.

How do you feel EB has influenced you or led you towards your choice of profession? I have been a food buyer now for 6 years, first working with fine foods from Italy, Spain and France and now in the UK. Although I’m not sure that EB taught me to love food, it did influence my love for the stories behind so many of the international suppliers and producers I work with. I think it gave me an appreciation for trying everything and understanding the value behind learning a new culture, even if it is only through their foods. What would you say to parents just starting out at EB? I would tell parents that sending their kids to EB will give their children a unique perspective on life. Learning a new language and being bilingual is a gift that will stay with them for the rest of their lives and will open countless doors. Describe your favorite memory from EB. There are so many! I loved the Halloween parades, watching “the big kids” walk by the Lower School playground, the EBISC Middle School dances, the 8th grade Washington DC trip and, of course, the smell of roasted coffee from the neighborhood roaster is forever burned into my memory.

Please describe your current work. I currently work in London as the grocery buyer for a chain of organic grocery stores, much like Whole Foods. I spend most of my day meeting new suppliers, tasting products, negotiating margins and using a lot more math than I ever expected to. Merci M. Coup !
Do you feel that EB adequately prepared you for life after EB? Do you feel you are a citizen of the world? My time at EB has shaped my life in countless ways but the most significant is perhaps the way it taught us to view ourselves as citizens of the world. There is no doubt that EB is a very “Berkeley” school, but studying in French with French teachers, taking trips to France and hosting exchange students narrowed the gap between the Bay Area and the rest of the world. It meant that in 6th grade I lived in France for a year, then went to university in Madrid, lived in India for 6 months and finally moved to London a couple of years ago. I think these all would have been much more daunting had we not been exposed to so much at such a young age. Would you consider sending your children to EB? Why? Absolutely. I would like my children to be reminded that there is a world that extends far beyond the one they know in the Bay Area. Aside from travelling, I think EB is the best way to remind them. I truly do look forward to the day my kids go to EB, even if it’s just to selfishly walk down memory lane.

What did you enjoy most about your time at EB and why? Wow, what can I say? I just enjoyed being a kid in such an awesome environment! I knew we had it good there. We all did. The experience of being sandwiched between two cultures, one that we entered into when we stepped onto school grounds, was what was so enjoyable. I wouldn’t say there was just one thing; it was the environment as a whole. Please describe your current work. Currently, I am the academic manager in an English language training school in the south of France. We have a particular method for teaching and I counsel the students in their development. I also manage the team like a mother hen I suppose you could say. How do you feel EB has influenced you or led you towards your choice of profession?
What would you say to parents just starting out at EB? It’s totally worth it. Your child will have a more open mind and connect those neurons for language learning at such an early age which will stay with them forever! Where else will your child have such an opportunity? Despite having a French mom, it’s not enough to speak only at home to one person. The more immersed you are in a language, the better. Describe your favorite memory from EB. My favorite memory was in the library when a classmate did a presentation on her trip to Africa with her family. The stories she told were so mystifying that they made me want to travel there, a dream I finally got to realize two years ago with another former classmate from EB! Do you feel that EB adequately prepared you for life after EB? Do you feel you are a citizen of the world? I left EB after elementary school and it left me with a taste of the world that I wanted to explore more of and still do to this day more than anything. Without EB to boost my curiosity, I don’t know if I would have had enough confidence to come out here and try out life in a new way. With that confidence I do believe that I’m a more well-rounded person thanks to this school.
Would you consider sending your children to EB? Why?

If I had any, yes of course. The class sizes are small and the curriculum includes gardening. The teachers and administration put so much effort into teaching not only the basics, but also the importance of environmental factors, healthy eating and well-being, all while letting us kids… be kids! The sense of community was critical among all staff members from the maintenance man to the headmaster, which shows children how to coexist with people from all walks of life. EB has such a gravitational pull on the French community in the Bay Area as well. As parents, it’s not about just sending your kids to a school, it’s also about sharing ideas with other parents from all walks of life. So much goodness is transmitted to the kids through organized events and other such activities. Anything else you’d like to add? I hope this school keeps growing all while maintaining its core values that seem to only be getting stronger in an ever growing and changing world. My life would be so very different without EB; I’ve kept in touch with some classmates who have become quite good friends. We all end up finding each other again along the road somewhere.

EB was the center point of my life growing up and I feel so fortunate to have had a French American education at such a critical point of development. That being said, I always felt that I missed out on the true immersion French experience and that’s when I came out to France to teach English. I wouldn’t say that EB led me to my choice directly but it sure did get me thinking about what else is out there in the world and therefore initiating me to move out to France and see for myself more in depth.

Alumni Profile: Ivan Szpakowski, Class of 2000
I now regularly travel around the world for work and the background offered by EB has helped me to adapt wherever I go. Moreover, an important part of my job is helping Westerners better understand China and Chinese better understand the West. My ability to help bridge the gap between cultures has been aided tremendously by the experience of growing up amidst both French and American systems.
Ivan Szpakowski, Commodities Strategist at Citi, Hong Kong In the 15 years since graduating from EB, I have lived in ten cities in four countries. After running out of French classes in high school, I made a decision that’s shaped my life ever since. I started learning Mandarin. In college, I became ever more immersed in both Chinese and China, and following graduation I moved to China, studying and working there for a year and a half. I returned to the U.S. for graduate school and began working in New York, but soon moved back to Asia—first to Singapore, then Shanghai and now Hong Kong where I head Citigroup’s Asia commodities research team. The international perspective provided by EB has been invaluable. My Asian and European friends are amazed to hear that most Americans do not even own a passport. In contrast, EB offers the opportunity to experience two distinct cultures, languages, and outlooks on the world. In my opinion, this is one of the most profound learning experiences possible.

EB also helped instill in me a love of good food, which was one of the attractions for me of China, as only French cuisine can compete with the variety of authentic Chinese food. And while Chinese is the foreign language I use on a daily basis, I find myself happily slipping back into French language and culture whenever I visit France.

What did you enjoy most about your time at EB and why? I especially enjoyed the math and science classes at EB. The opportunity to attend “French Math” and “English Math”, where “French Math” focused on principles of geometry and “English Math” focused on algebra and precalculus, was so unique and really encouraged EB students to think critically in different languages. I can also still remember the projects, experiments, and teachers from my 5th grade and Middle School science classes that instilled in me a sense of wonder and curiosity about how things work in the world around me that I’ve carried with me through my undergraduate and now graduate career.

Please describe your current work. I’m currently a 5th-year Neuroscience Ph.D. candidate at Emory University and McLean Hospital at Harvard University. My current research is focused on the mechanisms of how stress and emotional trauma affect learning and memory, with the goal of understanding psychiatric disorders like post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). I’m really interested in understanding how social and environmental inequalities impact health, how stress can be transmitted from one generation to the next, and how we can best identify and develop strategies for intervention.

“While it’s been 14 years since I left EB, the one thing I’ll never forget are the lifelong friends I made.”
We created The Bosco (www.thebosco. com) in 2011, the first automatic GIF booth, bringing new technology to the photo booth tradition. I built most aspects of the company’s software and have since helped to grow The Bosco from a college fantasy to a profitable business with over 100 employees and offices in Brooklyn, Los Angeles and San Francisco that service clients worldwide. I split my time between Brooklyn, Los Angeles and San Francisco and really only have one hobby: The San Francisco Giants. While it’s been 14 years since I left EB, the one thing I’ll never forget are the lifelong friends I made. I think the bilingual and multicultural education at EB made my peers a much more interesting group of people, many of which I stay in touch with and consider to be my closest friends. If/when I have children, I’d definitely consider sending them to EB. I don’t know where else you could find such a perfect balance of culture and academics.

This yearly event is always a wonderful occasion for our alumni community to come together and celebrate the holidays. On January 8, 2015, high school students and college attendees in town for the winter holidays gathered in the festively decorated MPR for a chance to reconnect, visit old friends and teachers, and see who would be crowned royalty with delicious “galettes des rois !” Alumni, alumni parents, staff, and faculty recollected fond memories throughout the night, perusing the photo boards of the graduating classes from the past several years, and watching the ever-popular slideshow of photos from field trips and activities during their time at EB. Don’t miss our next one!
A now five-year tradition, the 21 and over reunion at Pyramid Brewery in Berkeley on January 6, 2015 was a nice way for our slightly older alumni to gather and catch up with one another in a relaxing atmosphere. Former students and parents enjoyed the chance to see what their fellow alumni were up to and to enjoy a pint of beer while chatting with their old classmates.

I am delighted to have served as Board Treasurer for EB this past year. For the past few years, we have worked to strengthen our school finances and further our efforts to maintain a community that reflects our multicultural values, which includes attracting and retaining a diverse and talented student body, faculty, and staff. We ended the 2014–2015 year with an operating budget surplus of $350,804 (EB’s budget is $14M), of which $237,877 was necessary to meet our scheduled principal repayments on our loans used to purchase the Lower and Middle School campuses and improve our Outdoor Learning Environment. EB has also worked to improve its liquidity following the recent facility purchases and related improvements. EB’s current ratio is 1.38 as of June 30, 2015 (compared to 1.20 as of June 30, 2014). EB’s current assets (mainly cash) were 1.38 times higher than its current liabilities (mostly tuition pre-payments and vacation compensation owed to faculty and staff). Translated into dollars, EB’s current assets surpassed its current

liabilities by $1,913,408. As a point of comparison in 2000, the current ratio was 0.73. In other words EB’s current assets were lower than its current liability by close to $450,000 though the school did not own its facilities at that time. The school continues to take action to put itself in a better financial position to weather fluctuations in the economy and other possible adversity. With a total net asset of $6.6M, EB has made steady progress over the past 15 years (total net assets were just under $2M in 2000). Over these years, we have been able to further our commitment to diversity and financial aid, to purchase our campuses, and to improve our buildings and grounds. The school continues to make every effort to keep faculty and staff salaries on par with Bay Area independent school averages, although they were lower than the average of East Bay Independent Schools 15 years ago.

It’s hard to believe that it’s been 14 years since I first walked the bright halls of EB, greeting friends and teachers as I took my son to class. I recently accompanied that same son to Washington D.C. where he started his freshman year at Georgetown studying foreign affairs and technology, blending the best of EB and the Bay Area. My son and daughter both entered EB as curious and energetic preschoolers and emerged as critical thinkers with an enthusiasm for learning and a love of exploration. While it is hard having my son leave the nest, I am confident that he is equipped with the tools to navigate whatever new experiences and challenges await him, thanks in large part to EB.

The Annual Fund is EB’s most important fundraiser of the year. In 2014–2015, the parent and faculty/ staff campaign ran for only 50 days, inspiring our community’s involvement early on. “Choosing EB for our children’s education was one of the best parenting decisions we’ve ever made,” says Pat Burns, the school’s most long-standing Annual Fund volunteer. Pat and Colleen’s son Connor, now a junior at Bishop O’Dowd, attended EB from Kindergarten through eighth grade and their youngest, Liam, will graduate in June. Reflecting back on their school search, the couple noted that strong academics and small class sizes were a priority, but they also wanted an environment that reflected the multiculturalism and diversity of the Bay Area. EB was a natural fit.
While at EB, Connor and Liam have made life-long friends from a wide-range of cultural backgrounds—an experience that has helped shape their world view. They have the language skills and the cultural sensitivity to interact respectfully and confidently with people from around the world. At the same time, the school has had an impact on the entire family. “When your children attend EB, your family joins a vibrant, diverse, and caring community,” says Pat. Getting and staying involved has deepened their connection with other EB families and the school.
While Colleen has volunteered as room parent, fieldtrip chauffeur, and more, Pat has served as an Annual Fund volunteer since they joined EB 13 years ago. Over more than a decade, Pat has raised critical funds for the school, including helping to reach milestone fundraising goals during his time as Chair in 2006–2007. Pat enjoys working as a team to achieve ambitious goals, and raising money for such a good cause is a fulfilling and tangible way for him to do his part. “A strong Annual Fund helps keep tuition within reach of more families, ensuring the diversity that our family values so much,” says Pat.
As they look ahead to their youngest son’s graduation in June, Pat and Colleen are filled with excitement and some sadness. They are confident that their children have been well-prepared for life’s next adventure, but will miss being so close to the EB community. “EB will always be our home school,” they say with fondness.
Endowment
In 2008, the idea of the class gift, dedicated to EB’s Endowment, was born. For the last eight years, the parents and students of the graduating class have continued this legacy, contributing generously to the EB Class Gift Endowment Fund. Every year, an alumni family offers a matching grant tied to the student fundraising. The purpose of these two funds is to provide a source of permanent financial security for EB. Most recently, in 2015, alumni parents John Rosenthal and Sally Drach established the Fund for Excellence. Allocations from this fund will support specific expenses intended to enhance the educational experience of EB students. Through their hard work and perseverance over the course of several months, this class has achieved some historymaking results: 1) 100% participation in student giving; 2) the highest amount of funds raised through student giving; 3) the highest amount of funds raised through the sale of their Marché items; and 4) the record for the largest class gift in the history of EB, contributing an amazing $16,821 to the EB Endowment Fund! This total gift was made possible by a generous matching gift of $2,000 from an alumni family, to whom we continue to be grateful.

Citizenship Award: Diego Salgues The Middle School Citizenship Award was created in 2011 to encourage Middle School students to take positive action in the EB community and beyond by modeling EB values. The Middle School was pleased to announce Diego Salgues in Grade 7 as the recipient of this year’s award. Diego was a key student organizer in both the Green Council and Student Council this year. He took on a leadership role for many school initiatives, including the E-Waste Drive, the Earth Day Film Festival, as well as initiating all of the Spirit Activities prepared by the Spirit Committee. Through a gift of $1,000 to the EB Endowment fund, the Citizenship Award honors Diego for his community efforts, leadership, and for his service to his peers. This year’s Fund-a-Need was devoted to faculty professional development, with the goal of sending 100% of our faculty to the trainings they deserve over the next three years. Thanks to our amazing community, $67,370 was raised for the Jeannette Rouger Professional Development Fund, to aid our teachers in bringing innovative learning to the classroom.

A Family Reflects on its Years of Volunteering

Tanu Sankalia and Devyani Jain, with their son Shiven, Class of 2016 Devyani Jain and Tanu Sankalia have enthusiastically served in a variety of volunteer roles at EB. Initially, volunteering was a great way to get to know other families and the school. They quickly found their volunteer niche while taking on leadership roles for the Annual Fund, Auction and Board. Shiven, their son, entered EB when he was just three years old. Now almost 13, he has spent most of his young life at EB. “We have watched our son grow into a well-rounded, academically prepared, and independent young man,” says Devyani. She is also quick to point out the profound impact the school’s diversity has had on their son. “Being exposed to such a wide-variety
of ideas and perspectives throughout his EB experience has made our son and his classmates more culturally aware, respectful, and compassionate.” Whether chairing the Auction, the Annual Fund, or serving on the Board of Trustees, Devyani and Tanu have contributed hours of time and expertise to the school. “I have enjoyed raising funds for EB both as the Auction Chair (3 years), and Annual Fund Chair and agent (11 years), because I see how these efforts impact the school—from supporting the excellent faculty to maintaining the school’s commitment to diversity,” says Devyani. During his six years on the Board, Tanu
served on the Buildings and Grounds Committee (as committee Chair from 2010 to 2014), lending his expertise in architecture and leaving a permanent mark on the school’s facilities and Outdoor Learning Environment. With their son graduating in June, Devyani and Tanu will take a step back next year, but they will remain connected to the school and their many EB friends. When asked to sum up their volunteer contributions to EB they say, “We feel fortunate that our son was able to attend EB. It has been our privilege to give back to a school and community that has given our family so much.”

This year, the PA was especially successful in implementing several new initiatives: the creation of a PA website, to streamline volunteer sign-ups and management and facilitate all PA activities; a well-attended series of parent enrichment lectures to open the dialogue around diversity and inclusion; and ending the year with a very successful Marché on our new Outdoor Learning Environment.

Tidjan Diette, Class of 2012 Jan. 12, 1998 – Sept. 1, 2015
Travis G. Krogh, Class of 2000 May 26, 1986 – Sep. 30, 2015
Tidjan Diette passed away in September in Paris at the age of 17. He was an amazing friend to many, and a loving brother to Aida and Clarisse. He will be deeply missed. Tidjan arrived at EB in 6th grade, speaking no English. His curiosity, incredible compassion and radiant smile connected people to him instantly. He fell in love with several beautiful and smart women, at EB, in Italy and in France! Quite a romantic young man with a lot of French panache. Tidjan built deep, lasting friendships wherever he went… his diverse worldwide tribe. Tidjan loved slam poetry and developed eclectic cinematographic, music and literature tastes. Moving back to Paris in summer 2012 was very difficult, but Tidjan welcomed the challenge and quickly became involved in social causes he believed in. He was thriving academically and was to graduate with honors from Lycée Louis Le Grand in 2016. Tidjan, my amazing slam poet, is buried close to Balzac. My future sound engineer is now with some of the best musicians in the world. My human rights activist is right behind a suffragette. Travis G. Krogh tragically passed on September 30th at the age of 29. He will be remembered as charismatic and handsome; he lit up a room with his smile, dimples and personality. He exuded confidence with his style, swagger, and love of clothing. Travis had a special sense of humor and brought life, energy, fun, and laughter wherever he went. He was creative, loved people and animals, threw himself wholly into whatever endeavor he chose at the time. He lived his life fully and without reservation. Born on May 26, 1986, Travis was a bright, happy boy, speaking French with his maternal Grand-mère as naturally as English. He was close with his entire family and enjoyed skateboarding, snowboarding, BMX, playing baseball and lacrosse. Travis was raised in Oakland, attended EB and The Hyde Boarding School. He attended college at Cabrillo and Columbia Junior College, studying horticulture and sustainable landscaping. After a motorcycle accident 4 years ago, he struggled to find his way and overcome his challenges. Travis left us too soon. He touched so many people in his short time here and memories of him will remain with us forever.
2014–2015 Annual Report
Pierre Schreyer, Class of 2011 Jul. 17, 1997 – Oct. 13, 2015
Pierre Schreyer passed away on October 13, 2015 after a 2–year battle with Neuroblastoma cancer. Pierre was born in Paris, France before moving to Oakland and attending EB from MK through 8th grade. Pierre graduated from Head-Royce School in June ‘15 and was taking a gapyear before college in order to focus on his illness. Pierre was an amazing fighter and surprised everyone with his bravery and tenacity. Pierre’s strength during this hard time moved us all. Pierre was loved by so many around him and all admired his warmth, generosity, humor, and ability to laugh at himself. Pierre touched many lives while he was a student here, evident by the visitors and messages sent to Pierre from students and faculty during his treatments. Among the messages of love and support, many were infused with humor and nods to Pierre’s unique ability to put smiles on the faces of those around him. During his many hospital stays, Pierre noticed many sick children spent birthdays in hospital rooms. True to his selfless personality, he started “Pierre’s Birthday Fund” as a way to deliver personalized gifts to sick children on their birthdays and improve child life in hospitals. His family is continuing Pierre’s legacy and would appreciate any donations be made directly to The Pierre Birthday Fund in order to help Pierre accomplish everything he had hoped for. We all miss Pierre.
