Gernot Paesold Herausgeber

“The stage is set” for the Zillertal mountain summer! While others are still busy sweating in offices, the curtain is opening on unforgettable days far removed from rushing and stress at the entrance to the Zillertal valley. You, of course, are the director of your very own personal holiday fairy tale. There are definitely enough seats. Before the impressive backdrop of 3,000 of the Zillertal and Tux Alps, you will stride appreciatively through the open-air theatre or organise electrical aid to change your seat - step by step, you will immerse yourself in a world of tradition, cuisine, tradition and culture. And all of this, of course, always takes place from a front row seat. In this magazine, we will show you the loveliest places, the most interesting protagonists and the most delicious ideas for some refreshment along the way. Starting on page 6, we will follow a young family on their journey of discover through the large open-air stage of Zillertal. From diverse nature trails on the valley floor, they travel past crystal clear mountain streams to lush green meadows to the peak of the Zillertal Alps, between the forest edge and the eternal ice of Hintertux Glacier. 379 km2 of these are part of the Zillertal Alps High Mountain Nature Park (p. 68), where, with a little bit of luck, you can catch its inhabitants, the Alpine ibex, marmots and co., in front of your camera. More treasures can be found using the new trend geocaching. This modern scavenger hunt with GPS devices is the new trend in sports (p. 38). Anyone who wants the tangy Zillertal mountain air in their nose on a mountain bike tour is in exactly the right place in Zillertal. Whether under your own power in the supreme discipline of the Alpine cross (p. 28) or with the help of the new e-Mountain bikes, much more than the summits await you at the end; you will also be met with culinary delicacies made from regional, natural products. How delicious dishes are conjured up from mushrooms and herbs collected at the edge of the trails is shown to us by Willi Pfister (p. 76) with his experience gained from six years of Hauben gastronomy. Dessert is provided by the Zillertal hay milk chocolate, refined with herbs (p. 91). An outing in the long tradition of the valley is offered by a visit to the “Lahnhäusl” - a true jewel of ancient Zillertal farming tradition (p. 54) of the Zillertal theatre stages (p. 92). When the curtain slowly closes and the holiday comes to an end, it is not only the memories of the unforgettable experiences that remain, but instead, most of all: the desire to return to unique setting of Zillertal. Maybe even as a “temporary Zillertaler” by participating in the project “volunteer at the farm” (p. 46) or as a fan at one of the numerous music events (p. 110). In this sense, it’s “curtains up” for Zillertal! Gernot Paesold Publisher

... der Zillertaler Bergsommer lädt ein. ... the Zillertal mountain summer invites you to.

March courageously into the mountains, throw away the ballast of your everyday life, breath in the fresh Alpine air and soak up the lightness of being; this is pure Zillertal mountain summer. Regardless of whether you’re young or old(er) - everyone finds the same unforgettable diversity of options to tank up on fitness for the body, mind and soul here. Mountain wellness in Zillertal is the purest nature “doping” and everything turns out perfect...

The fact a sojourn in the wonderfully clear mountain air promotes health and well-being is one long known by the residents of Zillertal; they have known of the magic power of their beloved mountains for many generations. An old piece of wisdom which also has scientific foundations is: spending time at high altitudes demonstrably promotes the transportability of oxygen in the blood, as studies which have been conducted confirm. The numerous (regular) guests of Zillertal also feel and treasure this natural source of power and who, with their constantly growing health awareness, can confidently leaves the fitness studio during their summer holiday and instead enter the world of mountains “armed” with sturdy shoes and walking sticks. This has the same effect, by the way, and provides the same holistic physical feeling, but without making an appointment and without any expenses worth mentioning - just going out into the nature which is waiting directly beyond the doors of the rooms to be experienced with all the senses. The tailor-made routes have the best signposts for every desire and mood, every degree of difficulty, every level of stamina, every age and even every weather.

Die Qual der Wahl in drei Höhenlagen

The agony of choice of three altitudes

Zillertal is one of the most striking hiking destinations thanks to the characteristics of its landscape where (in contrast to other valleys in Tyrol) hiking and landscape pleasures wait on three different landscape levels.

Adventure & challenges

Well-versed Alpinists find their fulfilment in the impressive mountains between the forest edge and the eternal ice of the glacier. Multi-day tours can also be embarked upon thanks to the numerous shelters which offer everything a mountaineer could wish for. Another highlight in the truest sense of the word is the Zillertal Alps High Mountain Nature Park, which covers an area of 379 km² and extends over all elevations of the Central Alps from 1,000 m to 3,509 m above sea level.

Whether it is a pleasurable hiking experience in the Zillertal mountains or one of the numerous recreational activities possible here - the outfit plays a supporting role both in terms of practical-functional as well as casual-fashionable aspects here - in the truest sense of the word.

The Swedish cult brand PeakPerformance has pushed the limits of technical design yet again, so that it is even easy for the wearer to move beyond their own limits. The centre of this is a brand new training collection with innovative clothing for every conceivable outdoor activity. For example, there are impressive jackets which, despite their unbelievably low weight are absolutely windproof and remain dry during rain. Whether the theme is “casual” or “active” - we definitely don’t want to keep these newest achievements of PeakPerformance from you. We have put together a small selection of fashionable mountain summer clothing in order to ensure the right outfit both for the active mountain experience as well as the relaxed indulgence after the mountain or bike tour.

No route is too long, no destination is too high - e-Bikes make it possible and comfortable.

24

Sport & Freizeit

Sports & Leisure

A new day has dawned for all active nature lovers who want to feel the Zillertal wind in their face while biking but may have capitulated (been forced to) when formerly faced with demanding routes. e-Bike is the magic word that brings cycling enthusiasts as well as mountain aficionados to their desired destination - a successful experience with a great deal of fun is guaranteed.

There is the e-Mountain bike which - the name says it all - is adapted for mountain routes and the e-Comfort bike, which is the comfortable alternative for the valley floor. Regardless of which version you decide on - it has never been so easy to enjoy the beauty of the Zillertal Alps while sitting on the seat of a bike while expending so little energy. Gone are the days where regular people struggled on the pedals, wheezing and sweating, trying to keep pace with the athletic bikers. With the e-Bike, the world is thrown open to those whose physical conditions never really allowed them to trust journeys beyond the valley floor before. A wonderful symbiosis of movement in the fresh Zillertal air combined with the ease of effortlessly “looking past” one pasture chalet after the other on the way to a hearty “Brettljause” lunch. The unforgettable mountain panorama of Zillertal with its three thousand metres provides omnipresent delight and its postcard-like idyll is free of charge. The support of the electrical (auxiliary) motor makes it possible to arrive at the destination relaxed and calm, “refuelling”, that is, charging with power, is accomplished at one of the numerous battery replacement stations. Routes that previously seemed unreachable are child’s play, without noise and without air pollution, all the while with the greatest possible energy efficiency - regardless of whether they are steep ascents or long tours. The joints and the cardiovascular system can also take pleasure in not being overtaxed. This revolutionary bicycle variant has now also been increasingly discovered by sporty and athletic people. The advantages are clearly in hand (or foot): e-Bikes support athletic mountain bikers on their trip through the mountains, bring those less well-trained to the same destinations and win even more points with their absolutely mobile environmental compatibility - especially in mountain regions. Zillertal offers its guests the optimal conditions for getting to know this innovative form of cycling which is completely new and could only be dreamed of before. Pure Alpine pleasure for older guests as well as the whole family who can now all venture on exciting mountain routes together thanks to this electrical tool and celebrate “conquering the summit” with Kaiserschmarrn (sugared raisin pancakes), dumplings & co. with a normal pulse rate.

E-Bike im kritischen Zillertal-Test

e-Bike in a critical Zillertal test

For e-Bike fans (and those who are certain to become one), the CENTURION Backfire Ultimate E.29 passed the “test” with flying colours. It optimally unites the benefits of an e-Bike with those of a twenty-niner (mountain bike with larger wheels) on the technically highest level with a well thought-out concept. Multiple tests in Zillertal demonstrated that this bike can master 1,000 metre height differences, that the mid-engine concept works perfectly, that the disc brakes are peerless and that the twenty-niner is the perfect choice for MTB tours. The Backfire Ultimate E.29 thus brings more bikers to the mountain cabins in a more relaxed state, is a sensational touring bike as a twenty-niner, convinces with unbeatable Bosch technology and passed all hardness tests in Zillertal with flying colours. There is simply nothing to left to add about it...

„Grenzenloses Hochalpinvergnügen für Biker.“ “Unlimited high Alpine pleasures for bikers.“

Whoever wants to go high, in the truest sense of the word, in Zillertal and is looking for an athletic challenge will find it in the Alpine cross. Biking on Hannibal’s trail, motivated bikers (as well as e-Mountain bikers) get their money’s worth while crossing the Alps. A very special treat...

A certain basic physical condition is required even for the beginner tour if one wants to cross the Alps on bicycle - unless the energysaving variant of the e-Mountain bike is chosen, which can also be used for the route. Regardless of the type of bike used, the right equipment plays as central a role for the temperature and weather differences to be expected at this height as does the sturdiness of the seat. There is nothing left in the way to unlimited high Alpine pleasures - paired with the indescribable feeling of being a little bit closer to the sky up there.

Two demanding routes wait to be mastered with the best equipment in Zillertal.

Alpenüberquerung übers Tuxerjoch

Alpine cross over the Tuxer Joch

This route also starts in Strass with the exciting journey through Zillertal before turning in the direction of Finkenberg and an impressive, yet rather steep section in the top part to one of the most beautiful viewpoints. The route leads from Hintertux to the Bichalm snack bar via a good gravel road. It continues into the valley to the crossing of the Weitental brook and through a beautiful larch forest to Sommerbergalm. From there, one continues to the Tuxer Joch-Haus along multiple turns. This route is completely traversable on the Zillertal side and is thus also outstanding as an e-Mountain bike route! Tip: Current route information can be obtained from the TuxFinkenberg tourism association at: +43 (0) 5287 8506

Alpenüberquerung übers Pfitscherjoch

Alpine cross over the Pfitscherjoch

Perfekt aufgewärmt biegt man beim Kiosk Schlegeis-Speicher ab.

The route starts leisurely in Strass, where the bike path begins in the direction of Mayrhofen with only a light incline (about 83 metres of vertical difference). After this perfect warm-up, cyclists make a turn at the Schlegeis reservoir kiosk. You should sit securely in the seat from the Zamsergatterl to the Pfitscherjoch; the route is very much like a single track but is always wide enough and up to 98% traversable for well-conditioned, technically adept mountain bikers. Shortly before the Pfitscherjoch it is recommended to take advantage of the flat stretch to relax the legs for the last metres and make sure the legs have it in them. After crossing the (Italian) border and taking a moment for a breather to enjoy the surrounding summit and the overwhelming panorama view, nothing stands in the way of the well-earned stop at Pfitscher Jochhaus before the descent begins. Tip: Ideally, get information about the current status of the route before your tour from the tourism association of the holiday region Mayrhofen/Hippach at: +43 (0) 5285 6760

Spannende Abenteuer garantiert!

Do you only think of long-lost childhood adventures when hear the words “scavenger hunt”? Far from it - the good, old treasure hunt is now receives its revival in the modern era thanks to GPS: Geocaching is a modern outdoor hobby which has attracted more than four million people worldwide (the tendency is strongly increasing). Geocaching becomes an unforgettable event in Zillertal, one of the most interesting regions to discover the beauty of nature using GPS with the whole family. Exciting adventures are guaranteed!

Geocaching (from the Greek geo “earth” and the English cache “secret stock”) embodies the idea of a high-tech treasure hunt using a GPS device or smartphone and is the searching for and finding or containers, called “geocaches”, that are hidden outdoors and sharing these experiences online. Anyone who believes that this trendy outdoor activity is restricted to the younger generations who grew up on a first name basis with technology is completely wrong. The geocaching community is composed of all age levels and has equally attracted the group of “best agers”.

Abenteuer & Spannung für Jung und Alt

Adventure & excitement for young and old

The caches, that is, the secret stock, are equally (well) hidden on the Zillertal valley floor and on the summits of the mountains, in old cabins, mills, chapels, forests and many other idyllic places which underline and embody the attraction of Zillertal. Collectively setting off on a treasure hunt, finding it together and also celebrating the successive together are the best prerequisites for a harmonic family holiday where every single member truly gets their money’s worth. Even our teenage guests who may find normal hikes decidedly “uncool” discover a passion for adventure and nature with geocaching and the associated use of modern navigation technology. Zillertal is perfectly equipped for young and old to present itself as a unique high-tech playing field with adventure guaranteed.

Use the GPS device or smartphone to find the optimal way to the point displayed where the actual search for the container itself begins.

Bear in mind: distances can be deceiving! Even if essential information can be found in the respective cache description, routes still have to be searched for and rivers and other obstacles must be overcome.

Make an entry in the logbook which is located in the container and then hide it again where it was found. If you don’t find it so quickly - think about where you would have hidden the geocach yourself, check for possible hints in the cache description and log it as “DNF” (not found) if necessary.

Enter what you found in a so-called “log” and perhaps add some details about the experience and upload some photos.

Take a Zillertal Alpine farm, spice it with work in the stalls and on the Alpine pastures, garnish it with rustic cuisine and refine it with splendid solitude and divine silence. These are the ingredients for an alternative opportunity to spend your holiday in total contrast to hectic city life. Get out of the loudness of everyday life and into a true farmer’s life...

Ein Original aus den Zillertaler Bergen: Bäuerin Anna Kirchmair. An original from the Zillertal mountains: farmer Anna Kirchmair.

Thanks to the initiative of Maschinenring Tirol, the project “volunteer at the farm” was launched in 2004, which pairs people inexperienced with agricultural with Alpine farming families. In exchange for room and board, interested parties from all parts of Europe help with making the hay, in the stalls, by watching the children or within the household - depending on where their support is needed. At the same time, these “temporary farmers” receive a clear view of the true everyday life, work and culture are experienced unvarnished and authentically, producers and consumers come together in an unconventionally natural way. This is a fruitful win-win situation, with exciting interpersonal encounters at airy heights included... We were able to confirm this with our own eyes by looking over the shoulders of Anna and Alfred Kirchmair in the heights of Aschau. The couple has cooperated with Maschinenring for many years and have collected a great deal of experience with their previous thirteen helpers. The following conversation, which took place between making hay, milking and a break for coffee, was conducted in an environment for where complex wordplay is not necessarily on the daily agenda. This is an encounter between human and nature, as pure and real as life. Z Magazine: How teachable are your helpers? Anna Kirchmair: Many of them are really excellent and are a true help, but there are also those where you have to say: “Please stop helping”... On average, our helpers stay with us for ten days, the longest stay so far has been for two months and one helper has even come to stay with us twice. Z Magazine: Where do you mostly use the volunteers? Anna Kirchmair: For cutting, turning the hay and raking. We have twelve hectares of pure hayfields here, with some very steep slopes that can only be worked by hand. Farming all of it is a great deal of work. Alfred (her husband) now has a special mower that makes things a little easier. The hay is completely made in the barn and serves as food for the cows in the winter and spring.

In der Ruhe liegt die Kraft des Bergbauern Alfred Kirchmair. Strength is in the quietness of Alpine farmer Alfred Kirchmair.

50

Z Magazine: Do you spend the entire year here? Anna Kirchmair: We spend seven months up here on the “Aschtn” (the pastures located some distance from the farm) and we spend the five winter months a little bit further down on the farm. The summer cabin used to be an Alpine dairy and has belong to the family since 1959 when my father-in-law bought it. My husband and I took it over in 1983. Z Magazine: What are your responsibilities as a farmer? Anna Kirchmair: I make sure that everyone eats well and I milk our eight cows. We also have two calves in the stalls; two additional young animals spend the summer up in the pastures, where we pay for their feeding and care. When the “Mander” (her husband and grandson) let me operate the machine on the field, I like to do that too. Z Magazine: What is your daily routine like? Alfred Kirchmair (who has now come from the field for a wellearned coffee break): At three in the morning, I go into the stalls to muck them out and lay down fresh hay so things stay dry for the animals. Anna goes out at four to milk and the milk is picked up at 5:30 am. Then we have breakfast with coffee and buttered bread with honey, sometimes Anna makes butter and curd cheese herself. Then I go out to mow while my wife takes care of the house. We have lunch at noon, for example Zillertal Krapfen (doughnuts), Zergln (potato pancakes), macaroni noodles with sausage or curd cheese dumplings, on Sundays we sometimes have roast pork. Things start back up again at 1:00 pm with the hay - until the coffee break at 3:00 pm. Then Anna serves her apple strudel made from grandmother’s recipe (the taste test was simply delicious!), cranberry cake or cranberry roulade. Reinvigorated, things move back to the pastures which have to be mowed.

Someone has to go into the stalls - and that is farmhand Zoran from Serbia, who has already been working for the Kirschmairs for eight summers and has become part of the family. Farmer Anna takes her leave now as well and disappears in the direction of Paula, Silva, Rosa, Heidi, Stern and Klara who need her attention again and want to be milked... In the evenings there is another warm meal, often and happily with porcini mushrooms and parasol mushrooms or chantarelles that Zoran has searched for (and found) with his keen senses and that Anna has roasted with a crispy coating or with onions and butter, mixed with eggs and served with salad. It is now the end of the work day in the “Aschtn” in the Zillertal mountains. Alfred usually goes to bed at 8:00 pm and now Anna enjoys “her time”, which she enjoys while watching a film on the television before she turns off the last lights. The Alpine farmer’s day begins again in just a few hours...

Fresh Alpine hay -not only the basis but also the namesake of the well-known Zillertal hay milk.

Vom ersten Gedanken bis zur Heugabel From the first thought to the pitchfork Andrea aus Wien, begeisterte Bergbäuerin auf Zeit. Andrea from Vienna, enthusiastic temporary Alpine farmer.

Andrea from Vienna, who was at the Kirchmair’s on a “work holiday” during our editor’s visit, tells the story of her journey out of the city to the Zillertal Alpine farm: “I wanted to have a holiday in the country in Austria and ran across an offer on the Internet to work on an Alpine farm. I liked this alternative even better. I work in an office in Vienna and I need physical activity to compensate for it - being here now and being able to do something is a really great thing. My grandfather had a farm in Lower Austria where I spent a lot of time in the summers as a child. As a result, life here is not so foreign to me. I signed up on the relevant platform and received a selection of about twelve farms, all in Tyrol. Three of these came under closer consideration where I could also live directly and the winner was the Kirchmair family in Zillertal. The entire process worked very smoothly and everything take about a month and a half. I find it wonderful and super to be able help right now in collecting the hay and it was an excellent decision to spend my holiday like this!” She was even able to earn approval under the attentive gaze of Anna Kirchmair: “Andrea is very capable, she fits right in...” ❖

Tradition

The “Lahnhäusl” in the idyllic village of Hart presents itself as a jewel of the old Zillertal architectural tradition. This building, first mentioned in 1772, complete with Grillhaus and Zuhäusl (smaller buildings in addition to the main building) lies hidden and protected from view at the edge of the forest. A pleasantly babbling brook meanders along the property line. This enchanting treasure of traditional architecture and natural beauty was lovingly restored by a Tyrolean artist with a creative sensibility.

“Please watch your head” is the well-meaning standard phrase of the hostess during a visit to this true Zillertal treasure. The rooms are - typical for buildings of the time - very low for today’s bodies, which is precisely what gives them this unforgettable homey feeling. Creaking floorboards and cosy rooms are the symbol of the comfort of the way things used to be. People automatically come together here, the characteristics of the rooms radiate intimacy, warmth and security. A unique idyll made from originality, firmly rooted in a traditional wooden structure which has withstood the passage of centuries. And, as one can learn, a so-called “one-room house”: when there is only one room to the right and left of the hallway. The artist can be proud of what she has accomplished with her family in the fifteen years since the purchase of the Lahnhäusl. On the search for an old original house in need of renovation, the trained painter and sculptor found the property in a newspaper ad and immediately fell in love with both the isolated location and the existing (even if it had been fairly ravaged by time) building shell. She had to roll up her sleeves and get to work. Beginning with a redefinition of old rights of way by partially removing some foreign components, the restoration of the brook landscape and including the installation of all sanitary systems, the basis of the property was successively revitalised. No distance was too far, no expense was too great to search for and buy old windows and then install them or to repurpose them to construct shelves.

Jahrhundert.” “In the Lahnhäusl, you can find old cutlery, glasses, pans and bedding from the 17th century.”

58

A love for detail peeks from every corner of the centuries-old wooden house.

Antiques, art and magnificent knick-knacks have been collected over the years to return to the Lahnh채usl its stamp of long-forgotten times with a great deal of flair and artistic taste. Old cutlery, glasses, pans and bedding from the 17th century are still preserved as well as utensils from scissors to tools which are still used today. One sleeps in the Aloiskammer or Bartlkammer - in Kabinettl (small single chambers) or the - nearly exclusive dormitory below the roof. The sleeping chambers are furnished with beautiful antique furniture and, like every corner of this house, have been decorated with a love for detail.

High-tech details are hidden sophisticatedly behind old elements and enable modern, comfortable living. Whether in the bathroom, kitchen or the utility room - these acquisitions of the modern age are warmly welcomed. This creates an omnipresent, imaginative dissonance: the concrete washbasin, the bathroom fixtures cut with a power saw, the broken granite of the walls (there are no tiles in the entire house), the natural wall surfaces made of stone and wood, the wooden grating on the floor of the bathroom or the original wood stove in the kitchen, all of which have modern components but whose optical appearance is consciously presented with an old “touch”. Reminiscences of the good old days come to life in the romantic batch in the basement with a large warm-water tub which, during the summer, is cosily located in the garden. Speaking of the garden: This oasis of peace and tranquillity invites with its swimming pond filled with brook water - and built from brook stones - to enjoy the summer freshness in the truest sense of the word. The main house, Zuhäusl and Grillhaus with covered terraces and cosy grill form a harmonious symbiosis of peace and calm together with the garden area and its “Martel” (wayside shrine with the Madonna). An impressive and fascinating piece of Zillertal is thus preserved. ❖

Zillertal guests can look forward to a unique treat when the beauty of the landscape move past them like a film set while sitting in a historic steam train. Nostalgia and tradition travel along and the charm of longpast times enchant large and small alike. The steam locomotive takes you to another world with its relaxing tschtsch, tschtsch - all aboard and experience the legend of Zillertal from a very special perspective...

The history and development of Zillertal has always been inseparable from the Zillertalbahn. The steam train was significantly involved in making Zillertal one of the most well-known and active holiday regions in the Alps today. From the settling of the valley to the arrival of the first guests to the construction of the German Alpine association cabins, the Zillertalbahn contributed to the boom of the entire valley. The tourism development in the summers would especially be unconceivable and impossible without the far-sighted decision to construct independent railway transportation for the valley.

Zillertaler Dampflok-Schmankerln (Specials)

Zillertal steam train delights (specials)

Travelling with the nostalgic steam train is itself a lasting adventure and takes you to an unforgettable world of travel. Additional fun and action is also provided “on board”:

64

The crystal car with 62,000 shimmering Swarovski crystals and food and drink service offers a stately experience and the sun creates a fascinating “dance of prismatic colours” in the car. Special occasions find a unique stage here in this fairy tale ambience. The convertible car gives “open-air fans” the option of enjoying their ride on the Zillertalbahn on an open freight car. A (young) dream, on the other hand, is fulfilled by the unique option of feeling like the king of the rails as an engine driver. The Zillertalbahn grants this wish every Friday from the beginning of June until the middle of September. Various route sections can be purchased and for a maximum of 3 hours the child in the man (or, of course, the woman) can be brought back to life.

And then there were the stokers, who had to shovel 2,000 kilograms of coal at temperatures of up to 50 °C and needed 5,000 litres of water for the route from Jenbach to Mayrhofen and back in order for the steam train to achieve its speed of 35 kilometres per hour and transport up to 550 persons...

Wandern mit der Bahn

Hiking with the train

As they say, the journey is the goal and the true fulfilment of travel is deliberate slowness. With the nostalgic steam train, this forgotten feeling of travel in Zillertal can still be experienced with all of the sense without hectic and hurry. The stations of the Zillertalbahn are also ideal starting points to hike through the Zillertal Alps on foot.

A steamy history of success Beginning at the end of the 1860s, there were repeated calls in the newspapers to construct railway tracks due to the poor traffic conditions in Zillertal. The omnibus operation - a horse trail that travelled the route to Mayrhofen three times per day - had not grown with the traffic. The existing street was difficult to travel at the time and ran through swamps at times. It is unimaginable today that at the dawn of the 20th century those travelling to Mayrhofen had to spend the night in Zell am Ziller! While a railway committee was elected in 1892 during a meeting of the community leaders, it took an additional three years until the final decision to construct a railway was made.

1899 Founding of the “Zillerthalbahn Actiengesellschaft”, the completion of the first 10.2 kilometre long railway track to Fügen followed a year later with successive expansions until the completion of the rail link to Mayrhofen in 1902.

1935 Introduction of a bus line between Mayrhofen and Innsbruck.

1993 Removal of the steam train from scheduled travel and reassignment as a nostalgic slow train with its own schedule - still today a very cosy way to marvel at the 3,000 vertical metres of the Zillertal Alps from the valley floor.

2008 Expansion of the two-track section from Kaltenbach to Aschau and from Zell am Ziller to Ramsau, introduction of the all-year 30-minute schedule, followed one year later by the new, improved passenger information system with digital schedule displays at the stations.

Steinbock.Welten – Zillergrund Ibex.Worlds - Zillergrund

Follow the trail of the rare ibex at the info point - an unforgettable act of nature.

Welten.

The Alpine ibex has a long tradition and a dramatic recent history in the High Mountain Nature Park. Until the beginning of the 17th century, there were populations in some areas of several hundred animals which were exterminated within 15 years. Despite attempts at resettlement, the stocks have been very difficult to recover since then. There is now a group of ibex living in free nature, but these are seen very rarely by visitors to the High Mountain Nature Park. For this reason, an existing building (complete with supply room for feed and stalls) was adapted into an ibex info point last year from which these rare Alpine animals cannot only be observed but where more can be learned about their biology as well as their ecological and cultural-historical significance in the exhibit “Ibex. Worlds”. A rare and unforgettable nature experience for large and small children alike! Open from June through October, daily from 9:00 am to 5:00 pm. Admission is free! The Nature Park hike “Kings of the Mountain” also includes a tour through Ibex.Worlds.

Willi Pfister: Young, creative and rooted in Zillertal cuisine.

In the summer they shoot boldly again out of the forest floor, the mushrooms or “Schwammerln” - as they are referred to in German slang - just waiting to be transformed into aromatic refinements with a variety of local herbs. Willi Pfister, junior and kitchen chef of Hotel Neue Post in Mayrhofen, has had especially creative thoughts for these. We are allowed to look over his shoulder while he applies them. Thanks to his experience from six years in Hauben gastronomy, Willi Pfister is always able to win over gourmets, in addition to already spoiled guests, with Hauben-level menus. His uncompromising demand for quality is also his trademark and, of course, in mushroom and herb season he is also running at top speed. Fresh products which are as regional as possible are very important to him, which he then transforms into culinary “Aha” experiences. Zillertal, with its natural delicacies from forests and (herb) gardens offers a nearly inexhaustible basis for creating treats for the palette by young, innovative culinary artists. In the following, you will find a diverse menu from the smart culinary notions of mushroom “maestro” Willi Pfister, offered with heart-felt thanks to the readers of Z Magazine. We wish you success and a tasty portion of Zillertal on your local plate.

Rinderfilet mit Kräuterkruste

Beef fillet with herb crust

4 pieces of beef fillet à 200 g 200 g butter 3 egg yolks 1 tablespoon of herb oil (walnut oil is also well suited) 90 g bread crumbs 60 g parmesan (grated) Chopped herbs such as thyme, rosemary, parsley, et cetera Salt, pepper Beat the butter until frothy and slowly stir in the egg yolk. Work in the other ingredients and wrap it up in transparent film. Let it cool and harden in a refrigerator for ca. 2 hours. Sear the beef fillets in a hot pan and cook them rare in the oven at ca. 80 °C. Let them rest for 15 minutes afterwards, then brush the surface with mustard and breadcrumbs. Cut the crust in 1 centimetre thick slices, cover the beef fillets with them and gratinate with strong top heat. TIP: Roast the rest of the herbs with the beef fillets in the pan and put them in the preheated oven together for a top herb taste! Instead of beef fillet, you could also use sirloin or rump steak.

Pfifferlinggulasch

Chantarelle goulash

150 g chantarelles 50 g shallots 25 g butter A pinch of garlic Some white wine Some paprika powder (to taste) 125 g cream 50 g broth Brown the chantarelles, shallots and garlic with butter, deglaze with a splash of white wine, add paprika power, pour in cream and broth and lightly thicken with corn starch or flour. Add a few boiled potato cubes and cut chive if desired. The same recipe without paprika powder would also be quite good with porcini mushrooms. TIP: The mushrooms that you find while hiking usually taste the best.

Der Steinpilz

The porcini mushroom

It is called a Steinpilz (stone mushroom) in German because its meat is harder than most other mushrooms. The porcini mushroom is related to other plants such as trees, which is why German speakers also sometimes refer to them as “spruce”, “pine” or “oak” mushrooms. Porcini mushrooms have been collected and treasured by human beings since ancient times. In the 19th century, they were known in Central Europe as “poor people’s meat” and were dried as supplies for the meagre winter months. Today, the porcini mushroom is seen as a delicacy. It mixes well with onions, shallots and garlic; the aroma of the mushrooms should not be overpowered in any event. Alongside being prepared, e.g. in a risotto, porcini mushrooms are also perfect for roasting.

The chantarelle

Jedem Spitzengericht sein Kräutlein

Every amazing dish has its herbs

Thyme, rosemary and parsley are used by Willi Pfister in his recipe for the herb crust. Rosemary and thyme are rich in essential oils and retain an excellent, intense taste upon being heated. One does have to be careful, however, not to use too many as the aroma can otherwise become somewhat unpleasant. When one rubs these two fresh herbs between their hands, an outstanding aroma is exuded. Parsley is known for its vitamins and, alongside its seasoning properties, is also an excellent visual garnish and has a more neutral taste than other seasonings.

Also known in German as a “Pffifferling”, this is most well-known, widespread mushroom in Europe and has established itself on the palettes of all gourmets with its pale yellow colour and crisp, firm meat.

There are a lot of theatre stages, but the level in Zillertal is a great deal higher, in this respect as well. Alongside the classic Volksbühnen (community theatres), international cultural festivals like “Stummer Schrei” or “Steudltenn” earn a great deal of media attention and resonance with professional productions.

The people of Zillertal are culturally active and playful, and not only in terms of music. Guests as well as locals will be brilliantly entertained during the summer months since “all the world’s a stage”. Depending on one’s mood and taste, everything from a-laugh-a-minute farming comedies to internationally renowned theatre can be chosen. Every genre is well-served in Zillertal and finds an excited audience.

A barn in Uderns with foundation walls from the 13th century, the name Zillertal, well known beyond the borders and a very active tourist area in the heart of Europe are the basis for an international, thoroughly professional company under the direction of Bernadette Abendstein and Hakon Hirzenberger. Their credo is to take contemporary themes and treat them theatrically. The theatre is mobile in order to avoid being bound to a fixed location, to make the entire valley and, in fact, the world playable and, most of all, to excite children and young people about the medium of theatre. They are on a golden path with contemporary, lusciously imaginative and age-appropriate events. These include “Nelson der Pinguin” (Nelson the Penguin) - for everyone ages 4 and up, the play adapted from the book of the same name by Hakon Hirzenberger and “Renner” (Runner) 2011. Sold-out performances in the last season (back to the AIDS Charity Gala) prove the wide acceptance and great value placed on these highly professional productions. And things will move ahead seamlessly this year - alongside penguin Nelson - with, amongst others “Wie hoch ist oben?” (How High is Up) for kids 6 and older or “Alpenkönig und Menschenfeind” (Alpine King and Misanthrope” for the adults. The indescribable ambience in Steudltenn also plays its part in creating a superlative evening of theatre.

Stummer Schrei – internationales kulturfestival vom 7. Juli bis 19. August 2012

„Stummer-Schrei“-Eigenproduktionen wie Uli Brées Krimikomödie „Für immer Stumm“ begeisterten 2010 über 7000 Menschen. Fotos: www.manfredhaun.com

“Stummer-Schrei“ productions such as Uli Brées crime comedy “Für immer Stumm” (Forever Silent) enchanted more than 7,000 people in 2010.

“Every genre is well-served in Zillertal.”

Stummer Schrei – international cultural festival from 7 July to 19 August 2012 This cultural festival was founded in 2003 and enchanted 7,000 audience members two years ago. Executive director Roland Silbernagl and artistic director Martin Flör present theatre, music and dance at the highest level outside of the mainstream. “Stummer Schrei” (Silent Scream) is now an established institution in the Tyrol cultural scene. Every two years, productions which deal with rural areas and people are presented as well as guest productions which usually can only be performed in Cologne, Berlin, Vienna and other large cities. “For us, Stummer Schrei is an expression of our love for our homeland, a proud attempt to present our culture” say both artists, who seek to continue their successful path this year. Under the motto “world theatre in the village square”, this year features an international youth theatre project which culturally connects seven European countries, a large opening festival, a romantic open-air theatre, musical “Tyrolean evenings” and much more in its fifth edition. Diverse cultural delights are guaranteed. One can look forward to a colourful mix where, alongside guest productions, the artistic potential of the team can be demonstrated in in-house productions. www.stummerschrei.at Tickets are available at all Ö-Ticket sales outlets and Raiffeisenbank as well as at the evening box office. Tickets are available from 28 May 2012.

Theaterverein Zell am Ziller The Theaterverein Zell am Ziller will celebrate 105 years at Theaterbuckel this year. The organisation has had to face various challenges over these long years. It had to overcome two world wars and in between them the theatre itself was dissolved for political reasons. Despite all of these obstacles and events, the organisation never bowed and continued to strongly reinvigorate tradition. The performances have taken place in the auditorium of the local school since 1982. Fortunately, young performers are able to be obtained for the stages thanks to these “school plays”. After the sweeping success of last year’s play “Die lustige Brautnacht” (The Merry Wedding Night), a pause must be taken with a heavy heart for renovation work on the school and auditorium. To a new 2013, when Theaterverein Zell am Ziller will say again: the curtain is up and the stage is set!

All the world’s a stage and Theaterverein Zell am Ziller will have a new one in 2013.

At the beginning of the 1920s, the people of Mayrhofen modestly enjoyed theatre in an inn before it was converted to a theatre stage in 1930. The poor economic condition of Austria during this time meant that a play could often be performed only once and this was ceased completely during the war years. After many years and a great reputation as a permanent coffee house stage and a few volatile local “migration periods”, the great wish for an auditorium was granted in 1980 in the newly constructed Europahaus where the theatre people - alongside open-air productions - still find their home today. Primarily with her own productions which range from funny to serious as well as theatre for and with children, chief Martina Schwemberger is responsible for the lasting success of the theatre This summer, there definitely will be hearty laughter again...

According to oral history, a teacher in Finkenberg was the force behind the theatre, which was still performed in a hallway that year. The tradition continued in the 1930s and a stage was constructed in an inn after the war in 1945. With the completion of the new school in 1982, the auditorium could also be used for public events. “Old” actors and young theatre enthusiasts came together in 1983 and founded the Volksbühne Finkenberg as the 7th stage in Zillertal. An energetic organisation was born which is now celebrating its 30th birthday in the 2012/2013 season. Plays from cheerful to contemplative, sketch evenings, theatre balls, street festivals as well as participation in events for Fasching and Advent are part of the active cultural lifestyle of the enterprising Finkenberg resident. www.finkenberg.tirol.gv.at

❖

A teacher began organising community theatre in 1800; at the time one had improvised in barns and stalls as well as later in the hallway of an inn. During the Napoleonic Wars, theatre performance was stopped by the Bavarian government, and from the middle of the 19th century, the newly constructed shooting gallery in Lanersbach served as a theatre auditorium. The two world wars stopped all activities until the newly founded theatre group found its stage in Unterwirtsalm in 1947. The new theatre auditorium of the community was dedicated in 1953 and the performances took place there until 2010. With the construction of the event building Tux-Center, the Volksbühne moved to these premises where almost every event has been completely sold-out ever since. Your laugh muscles will be taken to the limit again this summer by a funny comedy in the Tux dialect! www.theaterverbandtirol.at

Lieblingsthema Musik im Strasser-Häusl: Fritz Gasser, Daniel Prantl und Hubert Klausner (v. li.). The favourite topic of music in Strasser-Häusl: Fritz Gasser, Daniel Prantl and Hubert Klausner (from left to right).

Imagining Zillertal without music is simply impossible; a love for music is developed while still in the cradle. Maintained and passed on for many generations, this tradition in the valley of music is as routine as breathing air.

Why is this here and why is this so compact? We set off on the trail and sat down for a famous round table with three different kinds of Zillertal musicians. While the table did have edges and corners - the opinions of Daniel Prantl, Hubert Klausner and Fritz Gasser on their favourite topic of music ended up being wellrounded... The historic and idyllic location of the conversation was the landmark protected Strasser-Häusl, built in 1714 in Laimach / Hippach and brought back to life after extensive renovations as a cultural museum 11 years ago in a private initiative conducted by Rosi Kraft. From here, the Christmas song of all Christmas song, “Silent Night” was brought to Leipzig by street children and from there to the entire world.

Why does music play such a central role in Zillertal right now?

The résumés of our circle of musicians: Hundreds of years ago, families of singers travelled the world to bring their products “to the people” by making music. The valley used to be poor, the economy was in the ground and music helped to survive - it served, so to speak, as the “marketing focus” as it would be formulated in modern language. The journeys were long and difficult and the bread was hard-earned when one hard to travel on foot to Munich in order to reach the wider world from Germany. Today it is unimaginable what the people of Zillertal achieved then and the exertions they had to make. As a result, music was certainly not only associated with fun and pleasure in those times. All the same, the Zillertal

The dedicated music teacher Hubert Klausner of the Landesmusik school (state music school) Zillertal studied at the Innsbruck state conservatory, has more than 30 years of experience of an accordion and harmonica teacher and is a successful music publisher, composer and juror at Styrian accordion championship events. Despite the hard work, his motto with his students is: “What’s the good of discipline and hours of practice if making music isn’t fun?”

The professional folk musician As a member the successful “Jungen Zillertaler”, Daniel Prantl turned his hobby into a profession 18 years ago, after completing a solid training programme. In over 200 appearances per year in German-speaking Europe, he enchants with the A and E guitars, the saxophone, the violin as well as with his voice. He is a musical polymath who moves fluidly between the borders of private life and the stage. “If you do something with passion and soul, that’s completely normal”, says Daniel.

The innovative home musician Fritz Gasser, a member of Schwendberger Geigenmusik, has composed the widely known Zillertal “Stillupa blues” for over 40 years. Today, he wants to experience folk music in an even more interesting and provocative manner: “It has to keep developing before it becomes static; nothing new is being composed”, muses Gasser. And so he writes his own music in a dialect that, while it has nothing really to do with folk music, is still pure Zillertal.

Freude verbunden.

In Zillertal, countless musical events by various groups shoot out of the more than fertile ground.”

musicians earned fame with their tough natures and warmed royal courts, the Emperor and the Russian tsar with their melodious compositions. For practical reasons, most songs were song a cappella then and if there was accompaniment, it was provided by a guitar, zither or small harp. The violin was not brought by wandering gypsies to Zillertal until much later, just as the elements of the Viennese Schrammeln in the famous Zillertal wedding march (who hasn’t already been made breathless by it...), written by Pölten Hansl. The Zillertalers took up these previously unknown accents and allowed them to influence their presentation.

A Zillertaler has music in their blood Music is simple in the genes of the people of Zillertal, inherited and passed on over many generations. A tradition with its origins in the 17th century, cherished and maintained and as routine as breathing air. A Zillertaler is automatically a musician - it is certainly no accident that countless music events by various groups shoot out of the more than fertile ground across the entire valley. In a valley where the guests are greeted with music and exhilarating melodies, one simply has to settle down...

Z Magazine: What instrument is played the most in Zillertal? Hubert Klausner: The guitar is the winner - it is also the focus at our music school. However, the Steirische Harmonika (Styrian accordion) has been booming for the last 10 to 15 years - out of 1,000 young musicians, 250 are playing this instrument and another 100 are still on the waiting list. Here’s a side note about this: We train Steirische Harmonika players to participate in world championships. The current champion (actually a German citizen) also learned his art here in Zillertal! And this proves the point that non-Zillertalers can also be trained for instrument in classes without a musical “handicap”... Z Magazine: Do holidaymakers have the chance to try out the harmonica during their stay here? Hubert Klausner: Of course they can “get a taste”. A small, simple piece of music can be learned after a short time.

Z Magazine: The old custom of home concerts is practice by many families in Zillertal. Do the young people play along as well? Fritz Gasser: We continue to see the trend and the joy of making music together as a family as has been done in the past; in fact, it is even increasing. Music weeks, events as well as further training sessions on the part of the Tyrolean folk music association are taking this positive attitude in the right direction. Home concerts are the counterpoint to many of the groups that appear - it would be a good and sensible idea to bring these more together. The “Schwendberger Geignmusig” play at folk music events now and again and sometimes even play a wedding or a pasture singing event and play private events. Our musical gatherings primarily serve as a Huangart (exciting conversation) with sampling and consuming. It’s simply something for the Zillertal soul... Z Magazine: Are the pieces provided with written notes for posterity? Fritz Gasser: No, nothing is in writing; the melodies used to be brought from mountain to mountain and passed on in this way. About 20 years ago, however, musicians in Innsbruck recorded some pieces and set them down on paper. Now these compositions are played increasingly by trained musicians - and they do so almost perfectly... One should simply take care that the tradition is not threatened by extinction and that young people continue to be excited by it. Z Magazine: Why does the folk music meet the tastes of so many young people? Daniel Prantl: We “young Zillertalers”, in my opinion, are well in line with the zeitgeist and combine traditional instrumental elements with modern elements. We’re not trying to create a perfect world, we want to provide an exuberant party atmosphere. The fact that wearing traditional costumes has been completely in for a few years certainly also supports our success. A happy fact is that half of our 6,000 visitors to the open-air events (from children to grandmothers and grandfathers) are locals - which means that we strongly differ from other groups and which always astonishes us as well. A little more from music teacher Klausner: Many students - inspired by Zillertal groups - want to learn an instrument. They ask again and again to be allowed to play pieces by their idols. Each lesson does being with folk music and the songs of successful Zillertal groups are especially popular. Z Magazine: What makes Zillertal musicians different from all the others? Fritz Gasser: There are excellent musicians in other places, such as the Bavarian folk music schools, who are masters of their instruments. But Zillertal has a type of bonus as the “valley of music”. Daniel Prantl: Zillertal can offer more than just a beautiful landscape. We present more open-air events than anywhere else - and all of them are well-attended! Hubert Klausner: The people of Zillertal have sarcasm and vim and the required amount of passion - they’re unique. And these characteristics absorb so many of the possible flaws... That’s how they are, the people of Zillertal... ❖

Standing resplendent on a magnificent vista above Zell am Ziller, the pilgrimage church Maria Rast looks down on the valley, as well as back on an animated history. Zillertal guests will find the space and contemplation on at this lovely spot to attentively listen to the legend of its origins.

Of all the sacral locations in Zillertal, Maria Rast am Hainzenberg is the most visited. A chapel was constructed for the Queen of Heaven in 1685, followed by an imposing new building in 1783 which gives it its well-known appearance today. Old writings extol the pilgrimages to this loving shrine with its breathtaking vista. This made it all the more tragic when a landslide in 1914 caused parts of Hainzenberg to collapse, the tower of the church on the valley side was torn down to its foundations and the pilgrimage site had to be blocked off. The renovation work was not completed until ten years later, in 1924. The following legend, passed down over generations, tells the story of why the pilgrimage church stands at this point in Hainzenberg, high above the Gerlos Alpine Road.

+43 (0) 5282 2222.

Tip: The church is located on Bundesstraße in the direction of Gerlos and this tranquil pilgrimage site can be reached via a rather steep footpath in 15 to 30 minutes from the parking lot of the Waldheim inn. The trip is more comfortable with the bus that stops directly in front of Maria Rast. Private vehicles can drive to the church, but there are no parking options there! Classic concerts are held there throughout the year at short notice - you can find the performance dates on the local posters or by calling the Zell am Ziller tourism association, tel. +43 (0) 5282 2222.

One summer, lumberjacks were hard at work on the slopes of Hainzenberg. A number of trees had already been felled and the men were tired enough they could fall over - after all, they had been working diligently since dawn. There was one tree left to fell and then the well-earned end of the work day could come. It was a mighty old beech tree that was left. Blow after blow struck, the axes penetrated deep into the wood. And then the lumberjacks suddenly heard a plaintive voice. No one could say where it came from. The plaintive sound grew louder and louder. When trunk finally fell with a loud crash, the men found a picture of the Virgin Mary that had been residing in the roots. Overcome, they both knelt and prayed a Hail Mary. On the way home, they decided to erect a church at the site. They began building it the next day. When they arrived at the site with their tools, 3 white ravens flew past, took the picture of the Virgin Mary and carried it to the edge of the mountain. There they placed it on the bare rock and flew away. The lumberjacks took this as a sign from heaven and built the church where the image was placed. And because the mother of God had again found a place to rest, they named the church “Maria Rast”. The picture of the Virgin Mary has been hanging in the church ever since to give solace to the numerous religious pilgrims.
