Proceeds from this sale of this steer were donated by Gilby to the Rimbey Food Bank & Lord’s Food Bank in Rocky, by Rangeland to the Spruce View Food Bank, and by Hazel Dell to STARS, the Red Deer NICU, and the Alberta Children’s Hospital Foundation.

Joshua Alexander and this is my first year in 4-H. My projects name is Bucky and he is a Simmental/Angus cross. I chose him because I liked how big he was. At weigh-in he was over 760lbs and was heavier than my sisters calves! I can’t believe I’m already beating my sisters! He hasn’t stopped growing yet and I can’t wait to see how big he gets.

Bergquist and this is my 2nd year in 4-H. This is my steer Oreo and he is a Speckle Park/Black Angus cross. Oreo has been a really good steer this year. He is quiet, calm and will never miss a chance to eat. I got him from Leedale Valley Ranch, which is the same place I purchased last years steer from. When I got Oreo, he weighed 750 pounds. Cooke and this is my second year in the Gilby 4-H Beef Club.

This is my steer Two Sox, he is a Simmental cross and in March he weighed a whopping 1400lb. He enjoys being lead and shows a great attitude when working with him. I’m loving learning all new things in 4-H. I wanted to join because my mom and her brother and sister, and my grandpa’s whole family, all showed cattle.

Pfahler I am 10 years old and this is my first year in 4-H. I picked out my steer and named him Ace, he is a Hereford cross. He weighed in at 719lbs and I am hoping he will grow to be 1450lbs by the show and sale. I have been feeding him hay every morning and evening along with his grain. Smith, I’m 14 years old and this is my fifth year having a steer in 4-H. My steer this year is a Red Angus/Simmental cross named Simon. I bought him from my sister Madison. On April 1 Simon already weighed 1200 lbs. This year I also am raising Clementine, my heifer project.

Smith and this is my steer Sam. I am 17 years old and this is my ninth & final year in 4-H as I am off to UofA in the fall. I am our club’s President. Sam is a homegrown and raised Red Angus/ Simmental cross. He is my old 4-H cow Clover’s fourth calf. On April 1 Sam weighed 1220 lbs. This year I also have Dorian, my carcass project and my 2 year old cow Sage and her twins, Oliver & Ellie.

Hi, I’m Erika Mathon, this is my 4th year in Rangeland 4-H. I also have a 3 yr old pair, 2 yr old pair, and yearling heifer projects, along with sewing projects. This is my Red Angus Steer Thor. He stands up to his name cause he just keeps getting better and stronger and Bigger. He is the gentlest steer I’ve raised.

Hi, I’m Lexie Mathon and this is my 2nd year in 4-H. This is my steer Joey. I also have a 2 yr old pair and yearling heifer as 4-H projects this year. I really love 4-H and one of my favourite things about 4-H is getting together as a club and learning new skills. I would like to sincerely thank my last years steer buyer, Joly Plywood Sales.

My name is Travis Hodges and this is my 2nd year as a junior in Hazel Dell 4-H Beef Club. My steer’s name is Dagwood, he is an angus cross. Dagwood loves food, he is always the first one in the shed for dinner. He also loves getting brushed, if someone is out in his pasture, he is the first one asking to be brushed. I think Dagwood is awesome.

Peterson and I am a senior member in the Hazel Dell Beef Club. This is my sixth year in 4-H and my fourth steer project. Guaffer is a Simmental steer and enjoys being brushed. One of my favourite things about Guaffer is that the white markings on his face are in the geological shape of Alberta! You could say he is true Alberta Beef! This is this year’s donor steer Blondie. He is being raised by a Hazel Dell family.

Our 2022 donor steer is being sold by RAFFLE. Raffle tickets are available from all our 4-H members for $10/ticket.

First prize will be one half of the beef, cut and wrapped. Second and third prizes will each be one quarter of the beef, cut and wrapped. Only 1,000 tickets printed. The draw will be made at our sale, June 1, 2022 at the Eckville Arena. Raffle license #591431.

Money raised by the raffle of this steer will be donated back to local charities.

The profit from this raffle will divided equally between the Sales Committee and the three clubs. The clubs each vote and decide on a local charity to support with their portion of the proceeds.

* The 4-H beef price is based on the purchase of a 1226 lb steer at $2.73/lb at Sale Day (weight and price average from our last live sale). This gives a ~795 lb carcass costing ~$0.70/lb to cut and wrap to your specific request. The final result is 520 lbs of meat in your freezer at the price of $7.50/lb!

The price per pound average for 4-H Beef has stayed fairly consistent for many years.

So let’s go shopping: You’d like 5 lbs of extra lean ground beef (1 lb for supper tonight, the other 4 you’ll baggie up and freeze for later), 4 decent steaks for the BBQ (each steak = 8 oz), a nice roast for Sunday dinner (4 lbs), and you’ve been wanting that chunk of brisket to put on the smoker (5 lbs). Your grocery bill for the meat comes to $219.42. That same 16 lbs of beef could be sitting in your freezer for $120.00.

For example, one half of beef will give you ~ 150 lbs of hamburger, 24 - 8 oz steaks, 10 - 4 lbs roasts, 10lbs of brisket, and 12 lbs of stew meat.
