Amy Sancetta Narrative Biography

Amy Sancetta enjoyed 30 years as a staff photographer with the Associated Press, as the organization's U.S. National Photographer as well as stints in the Philadelphia and Cleveland bureaus. But she began her photography journey working on the Orange yearbook and the Chagrin Valley Times while in high school. She's a proud member of the Orange Class of 1977.

Amy graduated from The Ohio State University with a degree in History and worked for the next two years as a staff photographer with the Columbus Dispatch before beginning her career at the Associated Press.

She has traveled the world covering 11 Olympic Games, a dozen Super Bowls, World Series, Masters, Kentucky Derbies, U.S Open Tennis tournaments, NBA and NHL Finals and the FIFA World Cup. She has covered numerous national political conventions and inaugurations, the Oscars, Emmys and the Sundance Film Festival, as well as the 9/11 attacks in NYC and the Oklahoma City Bombing.

Amy won the Pulitzer Prize in feature photography in 1993, and was named the Associated Press top sports photographer worldwide in 1993. In 2020, she was recognized as one of the Pioneering Women of Photojournalism by the Trailblazers of Light project and CNN. She has enjoyed teaching stints at Penn State, West Virginia University, John Carroll University and the Rich Clarkson Workshops.

Amy is married with a house of rescue animal “kids”. A big proponent of using your skills to give back to the community, she volunteers for a number of local animal welfare organizations and other non-profits.

"Get Up 10" the Class of 2021 Persists

Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar, better known as Cardi B, once said, “Knock me down 9 times, but I get up 10...” This year, Cardi B’s sentiment resonates with the Class of 2021 more than any other graduating class.

Not a single person knew what to expect as the school year commenced; we all entered the year hoping for change and renewed connection. We hoped for answers, worked towards the dissolution of civil unrest, fought for economic relief, and above all, wished for some semblance of normalcy to resume.

Despite the challenges of online school, the loss of monumental moments such as our homecoming dance, our inability to attend sporting events, teachers needing to restructure their classrooms for online learning, and more unprecedented events large and small, we have each come to understand the meaning of persistence; of never giving up, trusting that a brighter day is always around the corner, and yes, getting up 10.

This year has been unlike any other in Orange history, but as the class of 2021, we have proved that no matter what happens, we will always persist. Our separation’s impact has served as a reminder of just how important it is to cherish the smallest of moments and to continue to foster relationships with others. For the first time, we openly discussed mental health in the classroom, talked about our pets, shared their names on zoom and began to consider how even these seemingly miniscule interactions with others impact us greatly in our daily lives.

Over the course of the last year, persistence has revealed itself through the world’s response to COVID-19 and our response to adversity. The impressive effort of the senior class to make the best of this year, despite the challenges, is commendable. We pulled together to create ever-lasting memories, and although socially distanced, we will continue to accomplish more than we can possibly foresee.

Salutatorian................................................................ Honor Medallion with Yellow Ribbon The salutatorian is the graduate who has the second highest grade point average and who has attended Orange High School during all of his or her junior and senior years.

Top 10% of Class............................................................................................ Gold Honor Cord In the Class of 2021 there are 15 students in the top 10%. These honored students have cumulative grade point averages of 4.523 or higher.

4.0 or Above.............................................................Medallion with Orange & Black Ribbon In the Class of 2021 there are 52 students who earned a cumulative grade point average of 4.0 or above.

National Honor Society...........................................................................................Gold Tassel National Honor Society is an organization that recognizes students who have achieved excellence in the areas of scholarship, leadership, character, and service.

National Technical Honor Society.............................................Silver & Purple Honor Cords National Technical Honor Society is an organization that recognizes students enrolled in Excel TECC who have distinguished themselves in the areas of academic excellence, extracurricular activities, employability, service to school and community, leadership and character.

We’re All In This Together The Only Thing Permanent Is Our Friendships

We, more than anybody, understand the impermanence of things, and that life can change faster than a strike of lightning. We understand how to appreciate what we have while we have it, and how to be elastic with our plans. While we have certainly gained the skills of time management, taking standardized tests, and behaving in class, there are other, arguably more important, skills that we have learned through this four year journey as well. Those are the values of friendship, responsibility, trust, resilience, and going with the flow.

This year more than any seems to have made everyone realize that the best thing that we all have is each other. That when everything crumbles beneath us, friendship is the one platform that allows us firm ground to stand on. No one can deny the electricity that was in the air when people saw each other again because we all remembered what it meant to be a part of Orange High School. All of these lessons of friendship we have learned will help us in unique ways for the future. No matter what any of us do, our flexibility will make us as resilient as an elastic band. Stretching and compressing when needed, yet never breaking.

If we were to write an accurate, yet positive, description about our senior year, a lot of us would write about the sleeping in, the easier tests, and perhaps even the continuation of sports and clubs. Yet, some of us might forget about the unintentional shared experience that bonds us all together. We may not have had a homecoming, we may not have had many pep rallies, we may not have had the experience of being the kings and queens of the hallways, but we did have each other and at the end of the day, each other is what is going to really get us through what comes our way.
