ANDREA HOPE RUBIN Narrative Biography

Andrea Hope Rubin was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio. She graduated from Orange High School in 1983 and then attended The Ohio State University. Andrea graduated from OSU in 1987 with a BA in Journalism and Advertising. Andrea spent over 25 years with a career in sales, mostly media. Then, In 2013, she obtained her insurance license and worked as a sales agent for United Health Care. In October of 2014, Andrea was in a freak car fire, and spent six weeks in a medically-induced coma in the MetroHealth burn unit. She was severely burned over 56% of her body, mostly third and some fourth degree burns. To date, she has undergone 53 surgeries. Andrea has physically defied all the odds and doctors’ expectations. Andrea Hope Rubin leads a full, healthy and very happy life. The physical transformation that resulted from the fire led her to an empowering internal transformation - a path of “living in gratitude.” Andrea chooses to focus on all that she still has, and not on what she has lost. She speaks to high school students and other groups sharing this message as well as how to overcome insurmountable challenges and other life affirming topics. Andrea also speaks on the complicated issue of ethics in burn care. She has spoken all over the country to universities, hospitals and medical conferences. Her story and point of view on this topic has been published, most notably in The AMA Journal of Ethics. In 2018, Andrea was celebrated as MetroHealth’s patient of the year. Her amazing story can be found at: https://youtu.be/rPJTGnvoXIk.

A GROWTH MINDSET The class of 2020 exemplifies resilience and strength

The abrupt end of our senior year blind-sided each and every one of us. When the reality set in that we had lost our senior spirit week and prom, senior dinner, spring sports, and our traditional senior project and graduation we all mourned the extraordinary loss in our own ways, and rightfully so. Yet, as time passes we must understand how adversity can teach us resilience. The most important lesson to learn in our high school career is how to use the obstacles we encounter as a stepping stone to later success. As we live through times like this, our disappointment should not be ignored but instead should be used to build a solid foundation and develop a growth mindset. A mindset is how one generally thinks about what one’s beliefs, goals, and relationships. A growth mindset is characterized by a belief that problems are actually opportunities to mature. A fixed mindset is the opposite; it is characterized by a belief that problems are simply obstacles to overcome. How an individual views that obstacle defines whether a growth mindset is being developed or followed. In the bigger picture, we all have to be willing to look outside ourselves and realize that the sacrifices we have made during this pandemic are saving lives. Hope and optimism will keep us going in difficult times, both now and in the future. Orange High School has taught us to live with a growth mindset and this year has built our resilience like no other experience in our lives. Our parents and teachers are beyond proud of us and the things we’ve endured to get to this day. We never gave up, we worked as hard as we could, we pushed ourselves, and we lived with a growth mindset. As Kelly Clarkson sang, “What doesn’t kill you makes you stronger.” We are the Class of 2020, and we are STRONG. Let us celebrate our accomplishments and future!

LIVING IN THE PRESENT CELEBRATING The class of 2020

Danish philosopher, Søren Kierkegaard, once said, “Life can only be understood backwards; but it must be lived forwards.” For the Orange High School Class of 2020, this quote could not possibly resonate more. With so many bright futures ahead, this year’s graduating class is quite extraordinary, as every student takes a step into the unknown. Orange High School has been our home for the past 4 years of our lives and has helped to embody who we are as students, dreamers, and individuals. Although the ending to our senior year was far from perfect, we finally made it to the finish line. From the 5th grade clap out to our 8th-grade graduation, our schooling careers have led us to this very moment. While it may seem like this is the end of such a large part of our lives, it is far from that. This is simply the beginning of a new chapter for every one of us. As we are sitting in our homes, surrounded by our loving families, watching this virtual ceremony we can all be proud of what we have accomplished. Class of 2020 is truly extraordinary and will continue to be in the years to come. After spending around 13 years together, we have worked remarkably hard to reach this day. Regardless of all of our hard work, we could not have done it all on our own. Our teachers, families, friends, and many more have been there every day to help us succeed. Whether it's staying after school for extra help or phoning a friend late at night for some extra studying, our entire community has supported us all this time. Regardless of having a 2020 vision, everyone saw the potential our class had to accomplish extraordinary feats. Our graduates will look to discover a new path at 65 different colleges across 20 states and 2 countries. As we all look to embark on our new journeys, we can only look back and smile on our time at Orange High School. Our past has shaped us into the people we are today. While we may learn from the past and plan for the future, the present is where we truly live.

Fair Orange, we, thy loyal ones, Where’er in life our journey runs Shall cherish all the mem’ries dear That cluster round our sojourn here Fair Orange, though we come and go While o’er thy walls the ivies grow, We still shall love thee and be true To our old school, fair Orange, to you.
