Have a ball and help save local wildlife. That’s the message from Gold Coast and Hinterland Environment Council – Gecko – who have organised a fundraising event to benefit the Currumbin Sanctuary Wildlife Hospital. It’s hoped the Wildlife Wingding Ball will help raise much needed funds for the facility, which receives no government funding. The event is part of an ongoing campaign by the non-profit group to raise awareness about the plight of koalas locally.
Live entertainment, ballroom dancing, food and charity auction are all included in the ticket price. ‘It’s an entertaining night, but with a pretty serious background,’ said event organiser Anna Itkonen. The hospital has been operating for more than 40 years and takes in up to 30 sick and injured animals every day. It costs about $600,000 annually to run the facility, which is solely dependent on public donations for its survival. The Wildlife Hospital’s senior veterinarian Dr Michael Pyne said that more than 90 per cent of admissions at the hospital are a result of human

activity, namely, traffic accidents, dog attacks and habitat loss. Ms Itkonen said the idea for the environmentally-themed masquerade ball grew out of discussions on ways to assist the hospital. The event is the first of its kind to be hosted by Gecko. Proceeds will assist with the purchase of new equipment for the hospitals’ Koala Intensive Care Unit. The Wildlife Wingding Ball is on this Saturday (November 6) at Burleigh Waters Community Centre at 7.30pm (DST). Tickets cost $50 and are available by calling Anna on (07) 5534 1412 or emailing events@gecko. com.au.
Brisbane property tycoon Godfrey Mantle is hoping to hit the jackpot with the sale of a hilltop site at Bilambil Heights occupied by the decaying former Terranora Lakes Country Club. Mr Mantle, who won government approval for The Rise residential development on the 184 hectare site last July, is seeking to sell to the highest bidder through an international tender process closing in two weeks. The flamboyant restaurant and hotel owner purchased most of the site from the receivers of the former pokie palace in 1995 for about $5 million and according to real estate sources is now asking $100 million. The sale of what many consider the best piece of real estate in the shire is being managed through agents Ray White who describe the site as being on the southern end of the Gold Coast. It went on the market less than three months after Planning Minister Tony Kelly approved a concept plan for a $1.2 billion master planned community which commands panoramic views to Byron Bay and the Gold Coast. Mr Mantle declined to comment on the proposed sale or details of his original purchase but instead issued a press release extolling the potential of the former club and golf course site. He made headlines last month when he submitted an election funding return showing he had donated $58,000 to the NSW ALP between June 2007 and July last year, with most of it being contributed at dinner functions. He also donated $5,000 to help

‘The approval has added considerable value to the site, and has significantly de-risked the project. ‘Now that we have advanced the project to the point where it can be developed, TGM has taken a strategic decision to allow a substantial developer to deliver it on the ground by offering it to the market. ‘The Rise is clearly one of the most attractive sites on the east coast of Australia and one of the few concept plan-approved development opportunities available in the Gold Coast region. ‘We believe the site will appeal to major domestic development groups and major overseas companies who could bring international directions continued on page 2

towards the campaign expenses of former mayor Warren Polglase who later declared the donations on behalf of his election team. The approval allows the construction over the next 10 to 12 years of 1604 new dwellings and a 200-bed aged care facility as well as community facilities, a private school, commercial and retail outlets, and an arts college and arts precinct. Project director Steve MacRae says the decision to sell the landmark site comes after 15 years of ownership of the land by Terranora Group Management and a four-year planning and approvals process for The Rise development. ‘The Rise project was first conceived in 2006, and the subsequent four years from conception to ministerial approval has involved an enormous amount of work,’ Mr MacRae said.
